The edits on Kate 10 have landed, so we will be busy with those for the foreseeable future. Once they are done, it’s full speed ahead on Hugh’s book.
Gordon is doing business taxes. He is not a happy man, but he has girded his loin and is trying to beat them tax prep into submission.
It is a beautiful day here in San Marcos. We went for a walk. It was so nice and the dogs got to see the neighborhood and be petted by everyone they met. The downside is, now I have Britney’s Toxic stuck in my head.
How is your Tuesday?

Our kitchen renovation is proceeding! The old kitchen is GONE and the new electrical work is done, inspected, and approved. They have to install the new lighting, put up the new sheetrock over the torn up areas, then the new cabinets can be installed. Monday, they will measure for the countertops, which is the longest wait during a kitchen renovation at about 2 weeks to fabricate and get here.
You seem to be feeling better, which I’m glad to hear! Also good to know you are enjoying the new neighborhood! =)
Andri/Kaylenn says
Btw, I figured that reference to doing taxes in Chapter 3 meant it was that time for you two… =)

It’s a beautiful day in Charlotte, NC, too, although a bit chilly, and I’m stuck inside trying to wrap up month end. I think I’m coming down with a bug, but it’s been a slow progression of symptoms, so it’s probably not the dreaded flu. I’m making spaghetti with hot Italian sausage for dinner, but right now I’m trying to quash a craving for a Snickers bar. And I went to bed last light before I finished watching How to Train Your Dragon, so I look forward to finishing that tonight. As the human of both a cat and a dog, I see characteristics of both in Toothless, and that makes me smile.
Happy writing and re-writing.
MaryF says
I,, too, am trying to beat the tax prep into submission, so I sympathize w/Gordon. Also beautiful here and my husband will make me walk. His idea of walking, however, is to do it for exercise. What’s fun about heart-pounding, starved for oxygen power walking?
Mimi says
It’s a beautiful day here too. We’re going to take a walk also, up to the Red Onion for a burger and back home again!
MaryF says
Thanks, Mimi. My mouth is watering. I could muster up some speed if we had a destination like that!
R Coots says
Yay edits! Hope the walk means you’re feeling better!
I have spent thr day working and thinking time is both crawling and speeding. I plan to escape, get edits of my own done, and play some dragon dress up.

The morning is clear, relatively cool and we had rain yesterday( a point of celebration because our monthly average is way down). But still, looking forward to Friday. I am in North Queensland Australia ?

I am stress baking which is better than my other two alternatives: stress eating of junk food or stress shopping for things I don’t really need nor afford. So far I have one cheesecake and two loaves of french bread. I am planning to do a batch of brownies topped by homemade chocolate ganache frosting…..the best part is that because I made it I don’t really want to eat it:) My teenagers will be very content for a while.
Glad you finally defrosted!
DianainCa says
Well I survived the dentist, had three old fillings taken out and replaced. I am a nervous patient and I must say my dentist and staff take real good care of me. I always leave wondering what I was dreading.
It is beautiful here in San Jose Ca, we are supposed to get to the high 60’s maybe 70. Now for my next best thing (after reading the snippet)is waiting for mail delivery and a book delivery that is coming.
Hope the taxes go smoothly
Jikie says
I’m currently dealing with medical insurance. They’re using my info from 2013 for all claims billed this month instead of this year’s so everything is coming up as denied….
Will probably go for a walk and read to destress afterwards.
Sending good vibes for the taxes and edits!
Marianne says
My sympathies on dealing with medical insurance. I have been doing the same for the past couple of days. It got so bad I thought I would start tackling my taxes as a source of relief!! ? I hope you get everything straightened out.
Theresa says
I’m glad you are feeling better. I am trying to avoid everyone (as I always do) and claiming it is because I am trying not to get the flu.
But mostly I’m a little worried about why Gordon only has one loin. Old injury? I guess he *is* ex-military… 🙂

I’m just trying to get the house in order and recover enough to go back to work. I scramble to eat and sleep with a crazy cranky and attached infant and sick toddler. Being able to go to the bathroom twice a day feels like an accomplishment and getting a load of laundry done seems like I’ve won an Olympic bronze!
Emily says
Tuesday is wonderful! I got a free half-day off of work. Made my mortgage payment (I love to watch the balance go down!), went to lunch with a friend at the new Italian place in town, bought some fabric to make a blanket for my mom, taking my dog for a run, all before if normally reach escape velocity from the office.
Meg says
The husband and I have about 15 work and personal stuff up in the air and we’re fast becoming experts at juggling, but a break is needed and how! So my mother has come to visit and generally provide motherly support! I haven’t seen her since the day I got married 2 years and 7 months ago. That’s been hard on us given that life in the US / Mid West is so centered around family. #expatlife So 2 days into her month long visit and I am ecstatic and already well on my way to being fattened up by good ol home cooked South Indian food!
In other news, it is Tuesday, and we’re 3.5 days away from our road trip to New Orleans and I’m ready for it to be Friday now…please!
Also – it is possible that I have re-read the 3 chapters of Sweep in Blade about 10 times so far.

Have a great time in the Big Easy! Get you some King cake and Po boys! Yum!

Going pretty well here. I’m so glad you felt well enough to go for a walk. I can sympathize with Gordon, though my little tax return is juvenile in comparison.

Does this help?

Today is a good day. No one is sick. Since before Christmas either a bad cold or norovirus was being passed from one family member to another no matter how many times I wiped the house down. I also discovered the music of the Avett Brothers last night from a HBO documentary and they are fantastic.

Hooray for walks in the sunshine! I’m suffering from the crud, so my elderly cat and dog are hanging close. My husband keeps suggesting strange stuff for dinner, like tacos. I told him he gets to fix what he wants.

The new J. D. Robb arrived for my Kindle and I, um, already read it. (Retired here). Good as always. Picked up a load of library books, ate at my favorite taco place and restocked my Kit Kat stash (mini candy bars, restricted to two a day). The nights are still cold for Dallas but the days are nice (60ish). Have done my own taxes for decades but turns out retirement accounts complicate things. I can deal. Thanks for the reminder to count the good things.

I got word my J.D. audible is ready for download. Just got home so will do that soon.

I don’t know what happened to the comment I did write … not sch, but it was something along the line with that I forgot to plug in the heather in my car yeasterday evening and it was all iced up this, dark, freezing morning in Sweden. I then tried to get gas and the gas station seemed to have been hit by a magic wave, nothing worked. The day picked up okey though, I held a speech for a collegue on her last day before retirement, I had some of her retirement cake and at home I made dinner that at least one of the kids liked ( the picky one, who would have thought). Then I finished the day with Maud – thank you – and felt grateful and tried to write a comment lying in bed on the phone in english with a swedish autocorrect….the madness…and in the end that somehow transformed into sch, got panic and had to get out of bed and sit down at my computer and write this… yepp, that kind of day. Goodnight for the second time.

My first baby turned 15 today!!! He didn’t want a party just some money for clothes and his Xbox, and dinner at his favorite resturant. He only got a cake because the 4 year old demanded he have a birthday cake or it wouldn’t be a real birthday. I couldn’t eat much since I am having terrible side effects to the antibiotics I am taking for a sinus infection. But my kid was happy so I felt great emotionally even if I was physically feeling ill.
kommiesmom says
Congratulations! It sounds like you have some great kids. I love it when the younger ones take care of “the big kids”.
I really hope your sinus infection goes away soon. I get them, too, and hate them.
My second (and last) baby turned 35 on the 20th and his older sister will be 39 on Feb 9th. I still owe him lunch at the restaurant of his choice, which has been the birthday person’s traditional perk since John was about 4 or 5.
Joe says
Yesterday, my sister brought me homemade Pirogi she had made over the weekend. I started the day with that. Yum, she nailed it perfectly, then I cooked up cheeseburger goulash for later. I am still recovering from the collapsed lung I had during my biopsy a couple of weeks ago, at 72 I don’t bounce back like I did when younger. The side effects of coming off heavy steroids is as bad as the wounds in the chest. Every day I am better, so life is sweet this Tuesday. I miss Dallas big time, too cold to go for walk up here in Peoria. Rereading the early Harrington books and alternating them with rereads of Stroby. Playing ESO and Total War Warhammer, and way too many hands of Hearthstone(hit rank 12 this month). Time to time I head down to the day room and hang with the rest of the crazies.

Its still winter here in Minnesota and with the Super Bowl everything is up in the air and crazy. I do have my taxes done, just have to email them in, yeah. We are supposed to get to 31 on Wednesday then back to the cold for the weekend. Enchiladas tonight with extra hot sauce, yum. Been dreaming of warm places to visit this spring.

Moose the attack poodle is barking at me. Andy the lab is bugging me to take him on a walk, even though it’s freezing in Northern Virginia. Mabel the 50-pound boxer bulldog is on my lap and using me as her heating pad because she now has a partial ACL tear in her left leg. (Right leg fixed via surgery last year and looking at more surgery for her.). So it’s a normal day!
Ilona, glad you are feeling better and good luck to Gordon with taxes.
KR says
Glad to see you’re feeling better.
Alex R. says
Taxes are not beaten into submission.
They are, at best, herded off a cliff in an un orderly fashion. With as many explosive materials as can be found dumped on top.
Drowning them in a vat of acid is also acceptable.

No Stepford Wives music for your walk down the neighborhood? 😛

35celcius today expected 85% humidity lovely to be retired but on a day like this was good to go to work for the aircon even if my area had to be kept at 25C Tuesday was productive but included aircon and into the swimming pool plus arranging minor repair for the pool. My thirty five year old about to bloom Cooktown orchid (house warming present) is coming home from plant hospital today(neighbors house) back to its home hanging under the poinciana tree. Tuesday also had the bonus of Maud’s story love ? it.

Helped a co-worker with some things she needs to do before she takes a 6 week leave of absence for surgery. Talked about high level statistics to my boss and 2 co-workers. Had a headache after work and took it easy. Wanted to go out this afternoon, but with the headache and not feeling so good, I put off going until tomorrow.
Taxes…ugh! Had mine done last weekend. No wonder Gordon had the stony face. I would too if I had to do them.
Glad you’re enjoying the new neighborhood!
Kristi says
Freezing. I’m just freezing. It’s back down in the teens, and expected to be even colder later in the week.
On the bright side, my 86 year old mom had a mild bout of flu and has bounced back already.
Ms. Kim says
I am so glad you are feeling better. But to recover and then be faced with taxes – bleh.

I’ve had better days, but I’ve had worse so I won’t complain. Glad to hear you are doing better and had a good walk. Can’t get Rihanna’s Wild Thoughts out of my head after the Grammy’s. She was having a good time!

The Grammys really had some exceptional performances this year. I don’t know if Pink or Lady Gaga was my favorite.

I have a strange question/observation. I thought Hugh’s book was done but not published because you needed to do Kate first even though we should read Hugh first. That sentence is not good but I think you understand what I am saying. Have you any idea when Hugh will be out and in what form. As someone else wrote it would be nice if it were April 1. My crud is still here but will go to the Dr tomorrow and just know they will say it is allergies. To my knowledge I have no allergies. Life is good when I have one of your books to anticipate. Glad you could walk in nice weather
tylikcat says
The Bad: Am playing academic politics. Hate playing these particular politics. Nnnngh.
The Good: Taking back control of my life is cheering. Have lots of support, might manage to avoid having it turn into an outright fight. Also, am getting support in areas I didn’t even anticipate. (Note: The person involved is someone I want to remain on good terms with, not just because it behooves me but because I’m fond of them.)
Trying really hard to beat my training routine back into shape after the major talking to Shifu gave me.
Caroline says
Ugh. Academic politics…. a particularly toxic brand of workplace politics. I hated dealing with it too: my sincere sympathies.
tylikcat says
I’ve been meaning to thank you. I grew up with academic politics, and usually am good at avoiding the troubled spots, but this bit has been really emotionally exhausting. I’m usually up for taking on a fight if I need to, but in this case, if it comes to a fight, that’s already an outcome I don’t want. (And which will have career consequences, though that matters less to me than to most people. More, it will depress the hell out of me to be alienated from a mentor.) So I’ve been being relentlessly polite and cheerful and nonconfrontational while making sure all the appropriate allies and folks in the power structure know what’s going on. And making chirpy upbeat requests that are masterworks of spin. …and we’ve come to the start of some kind of agreement, so *giant sigh of relief*
I’m rewarding myself by taking some time to read and give feedback on the resume of one of my favorite students. And then hopefully I can concentrate on my actual work! (And maybe cleaning the zendo.)
Layla says
I’m starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel with query writing. With two manuscripts to send out for agents to review I have literally been driven to drink during this process. With an English BA, a JD, and ten years drafting and revising contracts, plus two manuscripts under my belt and yet these stupid queries have been the hardest thing I’ve ever had to write. SMH
BUT… I think we’re almost there.
Out beta reader is fantastic too. So that’s a big relief.
I started my new job this week too, selling very high end jewelry and diamonds. Nope, I’m not kidding. With a JD I’d rather be a sales person. At least until and if we can make the writing thing work.
Otherwise things are okay. Thanks for asking.
I hate doing taxes. So does John. I feel for John. I can NOT WAIT for Hugh’s book. Which is hilarious cause I originally voted against it. But your opening chapter you posted completely converted me. I can’t wait to see the woman who will match him.
Ericka says
Meh: it’s cold again (9 F this am), I’m sick and in training at work so I can’t stay home and sleep, instructor of training talked about himself for several hours today so we only made it to slide 65 of 369. Instructor told us all about his top secret navy sniper training (with the marines in VA) and how much he loved his job, included a rant on how disrespectful rich nfl players are for kneeling and disrespecting the flag, and pretty solidly disproved his stated iq of 169. Two more days of training to go… and 5 people that I am connected with but not overly close to have died in the last 2 weeks.
Good: I’m trying a new blueberry muffin recipe and my house smells amazing, it was nice enough to go to the park/playground this weekend, and my disease is more inconvenience than serious illness.
Good luck with taxes! Mine are going to be jacked this year, due to my forced work site move to another state. *sob*

Ha, in my house The Husband insists on doing the taxes because he says he has a better command of swear words than I do and it’s necessary for the task. Also he drinks alcohol which he insists is also necessary. I happily relinquish the job to him….

Yeah for Kate 10! And Hugh’s book! Boo taxes!
My day was just not fun. I had a blood test-which included an 8 hour fast at 2, was poked 3 times to find a source of the blood, and then when I got home, I slipped and landed on my butt. With my back also having been hurting for a couple of days, well, I’m not moving around much right now! But that means I can settle in with a good book!

We are getting air purfier for bedroom to help with allergies (molds pollen pet dander dust dust dust mites etc.) . Sinus infectons totally suck. Got lots of small chores caught up that fell by the wayside while I was down with flu/pnuemonia for 3 weeks. Glad to hear you are feeling better. Read all the Kate books again and Dina and Nevada also.love Maud and Arland! Read multi! Creator bless.

All the best with the Kate 10 edits! I’m sure you guys will do an amazing job, as always. Looking forward to more news about Hugh’s book later on.

So glad you were able to get out for a walk and enjoy the neighborhood. I sympathize with Gordon and the taxes. This year my taxes are going to be particularly tricky due to several major changes and I am not looking forward to it (even less than usual). But, this to shall pass (as my mother always used to say)! ?
The weather here in Northern Virginia took a turn back into cold temps again, and windy. Not a nice day to be outside, but a great day to be home with a good book, a soft throw, a hot cup of tea, and a Scotty dog who loves to cuddle. Fighting what I hope is only allergies instead of the beginning of the dreaded flu ?, and my husband just complained that I had not kissed or even hugged him yet today! Here I am trying to prevent spreading my crud to him ?, and he gets his feelings hurt! The good thing is that my husband still wants hugs and kisses (and other things ?? – sorry, I will keep this clean). When I am feeling ill, I usually turn to some of my favorite books to reread- like having the comfort of a visit with an old friend. Of course, your books are usually the ones I turn to. Right now it is the Innkeeper series in honor of the Maud snippets we have been getting – which are fabulous!!!
Marianne says
Actually, I am lucky enough to have two dogs that love to cuddle, a Scottish terrier and a Westie Scottie mix. The Scottie is just definitely Mama’s girl and never leaves my side. When I am sick she gets all motherly trying to take care of me and it is just so adorable!! It warms my heart and is as good for me or even better than chicken soup!!
Nicole says
And I have two miniature schnauzers who vie for my attention. The more dominant one lies across the stairs to block the other one, who sits at the top and cries for someone to come and save him. So totally cross with each other when I’m around, but we’ve caught them so many times sharing the same dog bed when left alone (there’s two more in their vicinity so don’t have to lie together) – they are so obvious!
Monica says
Glad you got out and about ? I am into first week post surgery after Achilles’ tendon reconstruction, two weeks non weight bearing cast, four weeks weight bearing cast and four weeks boot. All I can say is I am in desperate need of amusement so Maud is a joy.

It is 20 here in NYC and had some snow yesterday . Went to memorial for good friend and wake over the weekend . Then at work , several people out ?trying to do more work minus 2 people and copier keeps breaking down . Stressed out , eating donuts and just trying not to kick the copier. Or the clients when I tell them next free appointment is 2 weeks away. Re -reading favorite books and listening to Fleetwood Mac and Bob Seger to de-stress.
Glad you are moving forward book wise and you and Gordon and pets like the new neighborhood. Walking a dog always was a great stress release .

Hi Guys, I’m back to work at the nuclear plant and desperately editing my first novel project, Second Son. Found the cover on the book cover website you recommended. Promised I’d get the manuscript to my book engineer this weekend. This is to be a private family edition, to keep a promise to my Mom, then I’ll be seeking representation. Second Son is also a ‘continued by’ project, based on my uncle’s experiences in WW2. Can anyone spell fact checking?
Amanda says
Good luck with the taxes and edits (both can be supremely frustrating).
Just out of curiosity, will we ever see the second part (I assume there is a second part) of the Rogan POV from Wildfire? I’m really curious as to see him watching the date, also the actual blowtorch scene.
Heather says
Well now I have Toxic stuck in my head Wednesday morning. I’m also stuck at home feeling sick but I get to work in my PJs.
I am excited for all the books you are working on and all future books.

Ugh, taxes! Luckily, my husband also does the taxes, though it is my job to gather all the necessary paperwork.
Today is going to be a great day. I take a knitting class this afternoon, it’s the second class so I actually have a teeny-tiny clue about how to knit now. Hopefully, I can finish a small piece and have the side look straight-ish (which did NOT happen with my first piece).
Have a great week!

You seem to be more relaxed, it’s good, good luck for the taxes thing, hope you guys are fine !

Good to “see” you out and about and feeling better! I got up 10 minutes before my alarm, because, my brain is weird, and actually got up instead of laying there for another 20 minutes. Got to work early, which is why I am writing and eating right now, rather than working. Enjoy your day!

I would like to send your “Spousal Unit” My utmost sympathy. Being an accountant myself and spending the last two weeks in 1099 Hell along with doing all of our 4th quarter filings, I raise my Whisky glass to him in salute! It will all be over soon!

Glad to hear that you’re feeling better. And interested to note that Gordon only girds one loin during tax prep. It’s 70 degrees here in sunny CA. Working in my shop on some new custom orders then doing some photos of the new stuff. Just glad that the Santa Ana winds have stopped and the temp is above freezing. We have had some wild swings between day/eve temps for the last two weeks. BTW recommending ‘The Post’ to everyone – just a great film with terrific acting. The story kept us on the edges of our seats.

Gathering tax stuff together. Did laundry. Took my dad to the doctor. Walked the dog (four times). Waiting for Kate10.

Why don’t you use a tax preparer? A decent tax preparer can eliminate most of the headache.
Ilona says
We have a corporate accountant, however he still requires information such as closing documents on the sale of the house in Georgia, closing on purchasing of the new house, mortgage interest, a complete accounting of business expenses, including individual amounts paid to editors and artists for self-published work, so 1099s could be sent, a complete breakdown of income, communications with IRS, totality of taxes paid, and so on and so on and so on. We own and run a S-corp.

and then I went out Tuesday, on public transportation . . . folks were coughing , sneezing, and hacking through this worrisome fat wet fluffly snow flurries, that would not stop and kept trying to stick & pile up.
BUT,I conquered the FOIL method in algebraic expressions! Yaaahooo! Take that winter!
Taxes, yipes, yeek & gah

Then I read the book, check off next to what I did, asterisk what I didn’t,

There is no getting away, it will keep pulling me back.
