  4. Oh, that poor, mistreated, unloved puppy. She just breaks my heart heart with her sad, sad mourning, she does.

    In my house, we’re working a puzzle. The birds are crying (screeching) because they’re not allowed out while the puzzle’s uncovered (they steal and chew the pieces) and the cats are sulking because they aren’t allowed on the table (tails sweep the table clear.) We’re horrible, cruel people, we are. I admit it. I feel your pain.

    • My finches hatched 2 chicks over the weekend. The chicks have been demanding food ever more incessantly (with breaks for naps) ever since. This is not the best work environment ever, but I shall persevere.

      …but when my parrot starts yelling to drown out his new neighbors, I start wondering when I get to go back to the office.

    • +1 I turned the volume up as advised, I suddenly had my lap full of two very concerned Scottish terriers.

      • Oh my God, scottish terrier are my life !! They’re so special . I miss mine terribly.
        How could someone so small take so much place in our life ?

  7. So cute! You should hear my huskies. They are too much for me to walk together so I walk them separately. The younger of the two gets very upset when he has to stay home and wait his turn. I can hear him howling inside the house as soon as I get past the edge of the yard.

  8. My housemate’s dog would like us to go back to work as we are interrupting his day time napping habits.

    And getting in the way of his sunshine as we had to move the table so we could both work at the same time.

        When I was growing up our Cocker Spaniel has the trick down perfectly – if we (and him of course) were woken up at night by another dog howling or a singing cat, he always remained silent…at the time! You see he knew exactly the amount of time it would take for a human to start to drop off back to sleep – and then he’d howl to make sure that other dog knew that they’d woken up his humans!

  11. Hahaha my husky is the same. I walk her to the corner and back. Then she’s good. Fyi the corner is 3 doors down.

    It’s too big a risk for me. I’m recovering from b cancer.

    My pittie has gotten a lot more talkative these last few weeks of social distancing. He doesn’t howl, but he’s got the most piteous whimper. 🙂

    • LOL! My pittie is very vocal! She is always making noise and little groans and telling us how she feels! They are such expressive dogs.

  25. My sister has a miniature dachshund that makes a similar noise for the full 30 minutes before his dinner! Just as loud too..

    I have audio of 2 basenjis and a singing dog (no, that’s really what they are oh so justifiably named) complaining about their favorite person daring to bathe instead of taking them running that is shriller but otherwise similar in the despair. Oh, the despair.

  29. Oh my goodness. I’ve never heard a dog behaving that way because she wants to go on a walk. Hopefully your neighbours are not close.
    The sound only would be something for a ghost story 😊

    • My neighbors once called their priest to come do an exorcism because of the ruckus the Bs made – they were sure that there was something very unarthly and sinister wrong. Which, yeah, basenjis. But exorcism doesn’t help.

  49. That makes me miss my boxer so much. Roscoe loved everyone, but most of all, he loved kids. Did cate if they were two legged or four. He was the best.

    She is obviously an angel and has no bad habits at all.

    My cat wants reassurance. He wants me to come and stand by the food dish while he eats.
    Oh, and could I fluff the kibble up a little – maybe pull a little more down to the bowl? Smooth out the top? By the time Mr Picky is happy with the food dish, his younger “sister” has noticed and come running (cue thundering paws) to have some, too, and he couldn’t possibly share. He’ll try again later…
    Sigh. The simple joys of pet parenting.

    • Poor pit bull, he/she must feel awful in the house all the time. Can you take her for a ride in your truck/car and roll down the window so she can feel the breeze? Or do what my friend dies, put some dog/animal videos that she can see.🤗 maybe give her some treats for putting up with this quarantine? Give her many hugs and kisses🤗

  56. My 2 Boerboels send their commiserations. I now have a set of 160lb bookends sitting by my desk as I work. I feel their pain. Stay safe.

    • I have never heard of a Boerboel before. I had to Google it. Thank you for helping teach me something new today! I’m a sucker for all the large breed dogs. 😊

      • They are my family’s best friend and any threats worst enemy. We live on a large tract of land so they have room to run. We have fun with them.

  58. I have two Pomeranians, one of which has an extremely high pitched yip, which can be literally painful to listen to. I love him, but I would much rather hear you dog howl, than Casanova’s yip.

  59. I just have to deal with my husband singing the sad song of his people from being stuck inside with social distancing. I work from home, so kind of looking forward to getting him back out of the house.

    I never thought I would miss going to the gym.

  62. My dogs have been getting 2 or 3 walks a day. Well one gets walks, the other gets 1 walk and the rest are rides in her basset buggy. Everyone in my neighborhood thinks I’m insane. They’re mad because the past couple days have been cruddy weather and today I’ve been on zoom calls or recording screen capture videos (complete with canine commentary) all day so no walks yet. I think I’m giving up and taking them.

  64. I think the animals are keeping us sane. I can’t imagine what people were thinking dropping off their animals at the shelter. We need our furry friends more than ever!

  70. Soo much more polite than our Aussies! They were LIVID I took a quick walk this morning away from work!! They ran around the house barking at us!!!!! She is ADORABLE.

  75. Our German shepherd does something similar. We call it yodeling. He does it in time with the fire truck sirens and we live 1.5 miles down the road from the fire department. So this is a minimum twice a day occurrence.

  77. Is it mournful music or “I know a song that can get on your nerves”?!
    It’s horrible for the pets and kids stuck indoors, they just don’t understand what’s happening. I’m without pets at present but my brother with a dog has a small garden fortunately and his French Bulldog has been more inclined to sigh in relief at the limited walks (the crazy little devil won’t go out in rain, swerves all puddles, won’t walk on long grass, doesn’t like the dark, doesn’t like it too hot, won’t chase a ball except at home, hates crowds but gets scared if it’s too quiet out – Diva!!!).
    I know you said bulldog but looks a lot like a boxer – I’m unfamiliar with American breeds, however the ears, limbs and jaw, are all really boxer like. Mind you I had a Smooth Haired Red Merle Welsh Border Collie for 16 years, however we all thought, even the vet, based on certain bits of his looks and personality that he had Springer Spaniel running through his bloodline on the sly, papers bedamned!

  80. That was me over Easter weekend when they closed all the parks in Harris County/Houston. I couldn’t have my morning constitutional in the park. I didn’t howl out loud though, no point when you live by yourself.

  83. I miss having a dog. My 4 cats dont get along and I spend most of my time telling them to stop fighting. One sleeps on me and rules the bedroom. Another sits in the bathroom in her box waiting for petting. Unless she is down stairs trying to get at the kitten who is perpetually in heat. Then the other run just skulks around. I need a dog.

  84. I had a long haired chihuahua when I was in school. He had a typical little dog’s bark. But his howl, though. The first time I practiced my cello at home, I heard this deep cow like moan from outside. I went to check and only my dog was there waiting to come in. I let him in and went back to practicing. He came, sat by me and proceeded to howl along with my playing. It was hilarious. Every time I practiced, he howled in that deep, deep voice that should never have come from a 4 pound dog!

  88. Sorry, this isn’t related, but I thought people might like to know. Amazon (at least the US version) put 939 titles (and some of them are sets too) for free. I’m not really recommending any in particular, but since money is generally tight right now for most, I thought people might be interested. If you don’t have a Kindle, you can read on a free app with any device. (No, matter how this sounds, I swear it’s not an ad!) Most of the books seem to be mysteries, but there’s a variety. Might be able to find something you like. 😊

  89. My very old fur baby refuses to use her doggy door into the backyard at night. She demands to be let out the front yard, which is fairly large,walled and gated, and has a street light. She is 17 1/2 years and has done this for the last five years. I dread the day when l will inevitably lose her.

  93. Puppy and (I don’t knit but I try to quilt during isolation) blanket. My other poor Dalmatian is deaf but Pepper was worried about your puppy. My old English sheepdog didn’t move!

  96. Poor thing, but what dulcet tones his howl hath.
    My (very much smaller) girl is getting nearly unlimited attention, so she has started standing next to me when I sit down, and if I don’t pet her she wacks her nose sideways into my shin right where your reflexes are tested. All sort of casual like. She catches me by surprise every time and won’t stop until either I move, or pet her. It is keeping me hopping….

I have two little dogs my Charlie is smart he will keep doing a huffy sounds them what I call baby whinnying until he gets his way some times it can be loud and some time low either way we still love them may be time for a little fetch the ball time I have a 21 year old chiwawa bud and Charlie is 6 they are close sometimes bud will hide and Charlie can’t find him Charlie will come to me and whine then I go through the commands of words need food nope need outside nope need water nope then I say you can’t find bud he whines more with excitement so I start calling bud where you at then comes out of hiding and Charlie is Happy and bud gives him a few licks on Charlie ears

  101. So is this a normal bulldog thing? I didn’t realize they were so vocal! My dogs just look at me with sad faces when they don’t get their walks!

    I can relate to how he feels though, given the COVID lockdown.

    • Hi ! Yes it is … My 2 year old English bulldog sits by the door and actually moans and cries …. He turns his face in the opposite direction if I ask him to stop . It truly cracks me up . They are so human like and reminds me of a toddler . ♥️ my Teddy ❣️❣️❣️

    • My pitbulls are similarly whiney and complain quite vocally. The moaning is the most awkward, however. It sounds too human when they stare at you and moan.

    • Oh my word! That is SO funny … but I don’t have to live with it. Our little lady is teo going on one. She becomes a total pest if she doesn’t get 5 or 6 walks a day. All of which are the sole responsibility of my daughter. 😁

    • He’s singing his,song of despair! Be glad Gordon isn’t like my husband, who would be joining the sweet dog in harmony. Lol

    • All,our Nj forest reservations closed, big,parks too. sad. Death rate still climbing here can only imagine what no stay home rules would have done.
      Of course I need a mobility scooter and paved trails anyway.
      When the heck will NJ weather improve. So cold.

  110. I have long since conceded that my 6 cats are in charge and I exist to serve. Every morning at 4ish they hang up on me to be fed. One sits on my head and several others run across my body. My 3 legged cat (born with 3) uses the litter pan. Finally if that is not enough to get me up lynx reaches under the cover and scratches the sole of my foot. I stand up eyes tearing from the smell, trying to breath while dripping blood. I tried keeping the door closed but after 2 hours of scratching and meowing I gave up. Now I just get up when they start. Just call me Pavlov.

  111. That’s hysterical! 😂😂 I never gave it much thought about a full-sized Bulldog but I know that French Bulldogs are very vocal so it makes sense that the larger are likewise. And Isn’t it nice that you have someone to keep you in shape during the quarantine time whether you like it or not LOL

    • Yes, I agree on appearance, and he seems like a really nice guy. He’s got a very good voice too, though not the equal of his father’s.

  113. I find this hilarious and puzzling because my pup begrudgingly goes on walks with me. He sees me hold the leash and runs back inside the house. :/ Only goes with me when he sees the bag of treats going inside my pocket.

    • I so badly want to say something really neat to go with that…highly agree ..just can’t come up with anything. Maybe I’m still recovering from chasing down the missing 2 yr old. Was next door on my sisters back porch. The dogs hadn’t even barked. Not even one of 9. Thought the door was locked. Grandmas shouldn’t have this worry

  120. Thank you, Ilona Andrews for the post. I laughed hysterically. All of my dogs have been/ are quick to tell me that they have been “neglected” too. At least their vocalizations are easier to explain that what the cats do. The worst domicile incident was explaining to immediate townhouse neighbors what happened to my special order wait for a week new
    window shades.

  121. My cats have tiny voices that are so shrill, I expect there are whole notes that only the neighborhood dogs can hear. They have me well-trained. They tell me how pitifully hungry they are and I feed them. Fortunately, we seem to have settled on about 6 am.

    BTW, I’ve already reread the entire Innkeeper series. I want to live there. I want to scamper to the Market and back through a hidden door. This is about my fourth time through the series. I may need more before long!!

    • Try the Edge series. It has some carry over to Innkeeper and is lighthearted! I’m on my umpteenth reread of the series.

  122. I have two Danes and they have taken to having loud “discussion’s” under my bed. To the point they wake up the neighbors. I am only guessing but I think they are debating which side of the bed is better. Top or bottom.

Can’t help thinking about what it’s going to be like when all of us (eventually) go back to work and our pets, who have gotten spoiled having us at their beck and call 24/7, have to suddenly make do until 5pm again. I know our cats are super-content having us around to respond to their whims, give them extra petting sessions, offer more treats, etc… The neighborhood dogs also seem to be getting way more walks than before!

    • (Wincing.) Why did you have to mention that BaltoBookLover? My daughter’s dog (spoiled rotten, chihuahua who is only house trained when he wants to be) is going to be impossible when things go back to “normal” and he no longer has 3 adult humans to keep a sharp eye on him.

      Maybe I’ll just let the 2 Male cats (13 & 12 pounds) eat him. Or let the little tortie queen turn him into mincemeat as she has wanted to do for the last year. Just because she only weights 7 pounds, don’t let that fool you. She rules this entire house with iron clad claws.

  138. `Lennie, Jack Russell, knows that when my husband puts on his shoes this means a walk. He brings my husband a shoe.. Lennie, adopted when he was 14 years old, must have had an urban earlier owner. (Owner died.) He has no interest in the fields and orchard near our house. He wants city streets, roaming around. He chooses where to go, and he’s mapped the neighborhood. We had a Frenchie, and she hated walks. She insisted on going because our Miniature Schnauzer liked walks and wanted long ones. The Frenchie would walk a bit, then lay down and have to be carried the rest of the walk.

    And, I had turned the volume up on the phone…startled the Cat right out of begging for cheese. 🙂
