So there were some reader questions in the comments we meant to answer, but now I can’t find them.
Most people, when they get sick, get a fever. I get confusion. I very rarely have fever. The worst day of my cold, I got out of bed and dressed in my outside clothes, because some part of my brain told me that Gordon said we had to go grocery shopping first thing in the morning. I came out to a breakfast laid out and a roaring fireplace, because Gordon was under impression that I was sick and needed heat and food.
When we did go to the store, I attempted to leave my house in my slippers. Got into the driver seat and everything. Then about two miles into the trip, remembered that we forgot the checks we had to deposit. Turned around.
I had also written things. They read like I was really high on something.
So, if you had questions, ask them in the comments of this thread, because that’s the only way they are going to get answered. 🙂 The cut off point for questions is 48 hours from now, which means noon on Friday.
Rita says
What is your favorite part of writing Hugh’s book? 🙂
Ilona says
Hugh’s and Elara’s dialogue. It is such a ridiculously over the top relationship and they violently hate each other. It’s fun.
Stephen says
I searched (2days) for the snippets of “Magic Triumphs” and couldn’t find them. Like the one were Doolittle is trying to force the change on and Kate gets pissed of or the one with the magic train??
On the plus side i have read just about the whole blog.
Ilona says
We pulled all of them because we are now in edits. 🙂 As soon as we have some post-edit content, we will post the first couple of chapters.
Stephen says
Thank you!!
Was thinking of going through the blogs a 4th time.
To think you both could write a dozen side books just with what is on the blog.
Ms. Kim says
I believe in the snippet of Maud’s parents meeting, the children were already born. Soren asked about girl’s father. She answered about George.
Ilona says
Was that a question?
Ms. Kim says
What about their biological father? Does he have a story? Or did the snippet storyline get changed?
ManonLea says
I have been wondering about this too, and really just have a lot of questions about Dina’s parent’s story. Did her mom know that she was moving into an Inn with her 2.5 kids, had she heard the stories of the brave man who sacrificed himself for an Innkeeper (like Rodriguez and the other Innkeepers knew about), and what happened to the biological father?
Vampires are very concerned with blood legacy, will all of this come up in Sweep of the Blade and cause Maud more problems?
If you are getting ready to answer any of these questions in upcoming books, I will understand if you choose to leave me in suspense and will try to patiently wait. However, anything you can say about this now will be much appreciated!
Ilona says
You can find the beginning on Search page. Look for Gerard and Helen snippet.
Ilona says
Soren didn’t specify “biological” father. He simply asked about Dina and Maud’s father and Dina told him about her dad, the only father she and Maud ever knew. 🙂
Tink says
No, in the parent’s snippet, Klaus (who had a different name in the snippet) and Maud were born, but Dina wasn’t. I think Klaus and Maud were something like 7 and 5, maybe a bit younger. And they might have mentioned a divorce. In any case, the kids’ father wasn’t in the picture.
Amy says
There’s a parent snippet?
Wait – so Dina’s father is her stepfather? I am so confused now….
Maddox says
I’m also on the confusion train…
Liv W says
I think Dina’s father is her biological father, whereas her dad is the stepfather to Klaus and Maud…
Ilona says
That’s correct.
Ms. Kim says
Oh. I thought Dina was in snippet. Sorry.
Ilona says
Scroll down to Bits and Pieces. https://ilona-andrews.com/search/
Mandy Young says
I am confused by this whole question, and also realize I must have missed something. ???
Ilona says
Also, Dina’s father’s name is not George. It’s Gerard. 🙂
Valz says
I was like, huh, her father is GEORGE?!?
HM says
Do you ever read your own books recreationally? I.e., not to look things up, but for the stories? Thanks
Ilona says
No. 🙂
Betty says
Do you have tour schedule set yet?
Ilona says
No.
Tim says
What’s your favorite thing to write about in the Kate Daniels series
Ilona says
Right now it’s Conlan.
Christina Petty says
I should think so. I read my husband the bit with him and Thomas. He laughed out loud even though he’s never read the series.
Oshi says
Wait what bit about him and Thomas?
Andrea Smith says
Ilona mentioned taking down snippets from Kate 10 till after the edits.
Jessica Garcia says
I love your world building. Out of your published works which is your favorite world?
Ilona says
That’s a tough one. For Gordon, probably the world of Bayou Moon. For me, it’s probably Innkeeper.
Pat says
???
Feel better soon
Jessica Garcia says
Mine is between hidden legacy and innkeeper, although bayou moon is a pretty awesome book. ?
Rach says
Will we find out what happened after the end of Wildfire? Mostly curious about What happened to Catalina and Arabella! I just love Arabella! And Granda Freida! Cannot stop listening to the story!
Ilona says
We are in talks with Avon. We will tell you more when we know more.
Rach says
I think the only response to that is WAHOO!!
I just love the scene where Arabella’s magic is revealed! Also ‘THIS SUCKS’ on the floor ?
Tink says
Loved the Common Core comment, too.
Patricia Schlorke says
Yay! 😀
Aggiereader says
Come oooooon, Avon! Give me Christmas early!
Margie B, says
Yeah!
Patience says
How much, if any, do family members figure in your plots/character development? Surely Kid 1 and Kid 2 are in there somewhere.
Thx.
Ilona says
Of course they are. But it’s important to remember that people are incredibly complex, much more complex than characters. In fiction, readers want the actions of most characters to be logical and in real life people often do the most illogical things. So it’s more accurate to say that some facets of people we know are reflected in our characters,
FoodieNinja says
I swear I’ve read the KD series multiple times, but I’m a little fuzzy on this – were people who are were-creatures able to shift before the first magic wave? Or did Mahon just wake up one morning and suddenly he could shift into a giant bear?
Tasha A says
Great question! I have always wondered this as well!!
Liz says
I’m not sure if this is an answer, but one of the books talks about how tech and magic had been swinging back and forth since forever. There was a huge magic swing, and then tech built up and the pendulum went the other way. The “first wave” in this “world” was because the constant swings were out of balance. Thus the daily back and forth instead of long periods (decades/centuries) one way or the other
I imagine that the gene for shifting is always active. And that Mason’s ancestors were able to shift when the Magic was
In power. But when tech took over, no one could.
Jaime says
Or, did the magic mutate an existing virus/viruses into the were virus?
Victoria says
I’m one of the books, it talks about why mahon is so distrustful of non-shifters. If I remember correctly, they talk about people just waking up shifters when the shift happened.
Ilona says
Majority of people woke up on the morning of the Shift and found they were able to transform. And a lot of them went loup right away.
But some trickle of magic was always present in the world so in some rare cases a very power shapeshifter might have been able to change shape before the Shift. It’s more fun to think that it could have happened.
Tasha A says
Cool! Although the loup part is really sad.
Tina in NJ says
How do the Firsts figure in this (Anapa, Curran, Dali)? I’ve seen hints of what a First is, but no solid definition. (Probably on purpose.)
Ilona says
It’s explained in Gunmetal Magic. 🙂
Lucinda says
Wait, Dali is a first?! How did I miss that? Which book did that get revealed in?
Marni says
Dali’s short story talks about how the white tiger is old magic that has been in her family for generations. It comes with community obligations.
C P Lopes says
Every once in a while, you articulate an idea about a new book that usually sounds amazing and totally something I would read (ie. Jewish Vampire Hunter, yes please!). Do you even get distracted by what you’re working on with these shiny new ideas, and if so, how do you keep yourself on track?
Tink says
I saw that mention of the Jewish Vampire Hunter on Twitter. There is a series where there are Jewish magic users who fight supernaturals. I can’t remember if they fight vampires or if it’s mostly demons. Pretty good series; just don’t have access to my kindle at the moment to look it up.
Victoria says
There are Jewish people (and Christian, etc) who work magic (and fight what they consider evil, vampires, etc) in Kevin Hearne’s iron druid series)
Ilona says
If we don’t finish, we don’t get paid. Food money is a good motivator.
sarafina says
What do you have against Jewish Vampires?
Ilona says
🙂 The descendants of Esau would make for a lovely book.
Omar Mtz says
Did Kate had more than one Bridesmaid? Or was it just Dali?
Kelli says
And why was Dali maid of honor over Andrea? Thanks!
Ilona says
This was answered a number of times: in Southern Russia, the maid of honor is usually a maid and is considered to be next to marry. So it was natural for me that Dali would be the maid of honor and not Andrea, who is already married.
Omar Mtz says
I haven’t heard that before, but it makes sense given the day it was and Kate’s upbringing with Voron.
Thanks
Alysia says
If you do continue the hidden legacy series, as I believe i saw in another post you were considering, would you pick back up with Rogan and Nevada or move on to other characters. (Fingers crossed for her sisters)
Liz says
I LOVED the tension between Catalina and Alessandro at the trials!!
Ilona says
We will let you know as soon as we do. 🙂
Phyllis says
Since the publisher pushed the release date for Magic Triumphs back, are you hoping to slide Hugh’s book sort of into that May slot, Magic edits permitting?Or do you have some other tentative timetable?
Ilona says
You’re on the money. We are aiming for May.
Meg says
Yay!! 🙂 Also – feel better.
Patricia Schlorke says
More yay!
Skyrawr says
I can not, for the life of me, find the post about Mauds’ publishing date (or estimate). Is there one, or am I just imagining I read something about it?
Ilona says
You are imagining. 🙂 We said that Maud would start at Christmas and it did, but it will be done when it’s done.
popcorn says
In one book it says Kate’s maternal grandmother is dead, in another Roland it saying she is close to passing and Kate should go visit her. Will we ever find out if she is/was actually alive when Roland was trying to get her out of town or was it all just a plot from Roland?
Tink says
I think I brought that question up in a different post after I reread the book where Kate sits with Edvokia at her house and Edvokia explains their kinship, because in that book, she mentioned Kalina came back for her mother’s funeral, but in the djinn book Roland mentioned the grandmother was dying.
popcorn says
But we didn’t get any clarity (I replied at the time that I had sent an email and it would be explained “at some point”)
Ilona says
I have answered this about a million times. Roland lied. Why do you guys assume that everything the characters say is true?
Laura says
Because Kate does not react in any way to indicate it’s a lie, which she would/should have known. Rather, she acknowledges the lure of the temptation. Frankly I figured you authors forgot you offed grandma in an earlier book and brought her back because you needed compelling bait for Roland to offer her, and assumed the “reappearance” of grandma was due to the nature of writing when every element cannot be blocked out from inception.
Ilona says
Laura, at that point Kate has been told a number of conflicting stories. She is not 100% sure of anything regarding her family. There might have been an off chance that there was a grandma. But ultimately she decides the story is just a pretext to get her out of the area, but even so she wouldn’t jump up and yell, “You’re lying!”
Of course, if you prefer to think that we messed up, that’s cool too. 😉
Meg says
Will we see a novella / novel about Gerard & Helen, or Gerard’s story pre Helen?
Ilona says
Ehhh. Maybe.
Meg says
I can work with maybe 🙂
Brittney says
Please! I just went back and reread the story where Gerard and Helen “meet.” It is a great beginning. I would love to read the rest of the story and actually get to see them meet.
kimmelane says
What she said. I am dying to hear more about Gerard!
Tink says
Maybe after Dina & Co. find her parents we’ll get a novella for the parents. I think that would be nice timing. (hint, hint)
Rose says
Any new sparks for ideas in the Alphas universe? I know you said in May 2017 that there were no plans but who knows what inspiration may have struck in past 7 months.
Ilona says
No. There will be no more stories in Alphas universe for now.
Ez says
This is my fav series!!!! Along with kinsmen.
Christine says
Sad to hear no more Alphas, as I really liked it!
Brittany says
Do you have any plans for another Derek book/novella? Who else so you want to write book for in the Kate world? Are you starting any brand new series? Can we be best friends lol?
Ilona says
Not at the moment. Roman. Not at the moment. Possibly.
Meg says
Maybe you could start a squad. And pick your bffs in a “The Bachelor” like program where we all battle it out. Sorry, my husband and I are watching the show at the moment, and it’s our first experience with a ‘non-cooking’ reality series! We are soo cringy-ly entertained!!
Brittany says
Yeeees I would absolutely participate in that
Jeanette says
Yes! I love Roman!
Margaret says
Roman. Yes!
Makes up for no more Alpha Origin stories. I liked those killer bad asses.
Jennifer Woodall says
With clues of Sebastien North, Klaus the missing brother and the mystery of their parents, how many Innkeeper books do we get to look forward to?
Ilona says
I don’t know. There is no grand plan. We kind of make it up book by book.
AnnB says
I don’t have any questions, just wanted to say that I would really love if there were several more Innkeeper books. 🙂 Dina/Sean is my favorite IA couple and it also feels like there’s a lot of unexplored threads and adventures left in her world.
Rachael says
If you could would you live in any of the worlds you created, would you?
If yes then which one and what would your abilities be if any?
Ilona says
Innkeeper and rewind time for about 30 seconds or so.
Cécilia says
Will you come one day in France to sign your books? Please.
Ilona says
Probably.
Sara says
Will we ever see anymore of Jack? Ever since SIP grown up Jack intrigues the hell of of me. Thanks!
Ilona says
Possibly.
savil says
KD Universe:
1. Whatever happened to Gene? From Magic Breaks, was his invitation a setup?
2. Was there a short story about what happened to Kate&Co when they went up to John Hopkins to treat Christopher? I feel like I missed part of that story
3. Was/will there be a short story of the beginnings of the “A-team”? the 10 mercenaries with Curran that took the impossible job?
Thanks!
Ilona says
1. Curran smushed him.
2. No. There was no short story. The trip is referenced in Magic Binds and for some reason a lot of people think there is a missing short attached ot it. 🙂
3. Nope.
Ren says
In the Curran POV when Jim is laying out Kate’s parentage, Curran asks who knows. Jim says that Doolittle suspects (which makes sense, since he’s treated her medically), but also that “Mahon knows, and likes it not at all.” How did Mahon find out?
Ilona says
Curran. He told his mom and she told his dad.
mgoto says
I have a soft spot for George. I know the Edge Series is complete, but I think his role as an Arbitrator across the galaxies might make for some great storylines. Have you and Gordon considered featuring him in a new series (or at least a stand alone story/book)?
Christine A says
I loved the edge series and thought the characters were fantastic! I really wish this series could be expanded and further explored. I was heartbroken to see it end and although we got to see grown up Jack, George, and other characters I felt sad that we didn’t get to see them grow up or read about their adventures as they did. I hope we get more reading material on edge characters.
tylikcat says
Team George!
(just a comment)
Ilona says
Not at the moment. 🙂
Tink says
I’ve always wondered… How do you pick names for characters? Not just the main characters, but people the main characters meet in the books. Especially if the character is a different heritage; how do you know that you’re giving them a name that would be a legitimate name for a kid from that ethnic background?
Ilona says
We ask people from that ethnic background.
Katafer says
Is a move to Florida still on your wish list, or was this last move the “never again” one?
Thanks!
Ilona says
We may buy a house in Florida down the road when we have less animals and the kids are a bit more self-sufficient.
Lydia says
In Magic Breaks, when Kate and Roland are talking at the Order, Robert is right there. She says something about her father and other “secret” information, but Robert does not react or tell people when they are back at the Keep. Why? Was he supposed to not be able to hear them? I double-checked to see if he was knocked out or something, but he wasn’t.
savil says
Did you mean Hugh? Kate doesn’t talk with Roland at the Order in Magic Breaks
Ilona says
Just because it’s not on the page, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.
Kat T. says
When did this Kate and Roland conversation happen? I remember that Kate and the shapeshifters went to the Order but they got locked into loup cages. Kate was locked into a loup cage with Robert. Then Hugh came, Hugh and Kate talked a bit (which Robert heard), and then there was the fight.
So was the unwritten conversation between Kate and Roland after the fight? But before they got back to the Keep?
A few chapters later, Kate and Robert talked, and she asked if he heard something, and he was like yeah. Kate thought she was too complacent about keeping her secrets, and then Robert explained how Kate wasn’t ruthless enough to be a good alpha.
Monica Campos says
I have always been impressed with the amount of (real) mythological beings that appear in your stories (Kate Daniels series), including Kate’s grandmother. How much of your writing time is spent on research?
Ilona says
Too much. 🙂
L. says
Thank you for all of the research. I truly love the depth it adds to your characters and world building. All those lovely details keep the stories alive long after I’ve finished them.
Kara Rogers says
How may we convince you to come see us at DragonCon?
Ilona says
Eh. I don’t know. We are limiting travel. We have been for years. It’s money.
Flight from Austin to Atlanta, round trip, two people $500.
Kenneling dogs and cats: $500
Hotel: About $1,000
Food, miscellaneous expenses: let’s say another $300, if we eat cheap and more like $600 if we end up taking people to dinner.
So it’s between 2k-3k. We would have to sell 1,677 hardbacks to break even.
It’s not that we don’t have the money. We do. But it is better spent on either family needs or actual business projects, like doing audio recordings for our self-pub work.
Kara Rogers says
It’s now February first, and… speechless. Squeeeeee!
Christina Petty says
Did you work out the major plot points to the whole Kate Daniels series in advance, or did each book’s plot line get worked out after the previous book?
Ilona says
We had some rough idea of where we were going from book 2.
Lydia says
Where was Derek during the big battle against Roland’s forces? I mean, even Barabas was in the trenches!
Ilona says
Not every character can be given page time. Derek was fighting, but not doing anything noteworthy in front of Kate, so she didn’t see him. She was busy.
Tina Black says
With an eye to Hidden Legacy, does anyone besides Bern and Nevada know that Kyle has magic?
Ilona says
Yes, they told his mother.
Tina Black says
Thank you.
Abby says
Can we get a Conlan snippet? Pretty please? 🙂 🙂
(I’d settle for the first chapter excerpt, too!)
I hope your sickness improves and that your work schedules will be much more relaxed now that the first draft of Kate 10 is written.
Ilona says
Thank you! We will post the first chapter or two once we get editorial approval of the changes to the draft.
Liv W says
Thanks so much for this Q/A. Sorry, I have 2 stupid questions from White Hot, with a bit of background info on the second question to clarify it.
1. I’m having difficulty with whether one can chalk arcane circles on grass or not. Would you explain why Rogan and Nevada couldn’t draw a circle on the grass outside Antonio’s home to fight the barrage mages, but a giant arcane circle (about 30 yards wide) could be chalked into the grass at Tranquility Park that transported them to the cistern?
2. I’m also confused about the explanation of chalk being able to transport within Nevada’s fist to the cistern. In the book, it’s noted that teleportation doesn’t affect living things and only affects compounds of organic origin. David Howling comments about the lack of inorganic materials within Rogan and Nevada’s bodies, such as breast implants, so one infers the presence of inorganic items would be disastrous during teleportation. When David later indicates that wearing materials made of cotton or silk would only prolong their death by a couple of minutes, I took that as meaning the cotton/silk clothing would have made it through the teleportation with Rogan and Nevada but would only have kept them warm for a brief period (minutes).
Isn’t chalk is generally considered inorganic, whereas silk and cotton are of organic origin? So, if only things of organic origin are affected, it makes sense that Rogan and Nevada would be nude (assuming they wore cotton or silk tees/shirts, underwear, and jeans. And I could see Nevada’s hand wrapped around the chalk could probably carry the chalk through. But the characters’ comments about inorganic items like breast implant and organic items like silk/cotton, and what is or isn’t affected, seemed contradictory to me. Please explain where I’m going wrong with understanding the teleportation scenario.
Thanks for your patience.
C A Perez says
I’m not an expert by any means, but chalk comes from limestone, a mineral called calcite.
And most clothing now isn’t 100% cotton. Everything is cotton/polyester, or has synthetic dyes, nylon, etc. Maybe if they were wearing 100% organic cotton, dye-free, maybe they wouldn’t have been naked. But in that environment, pure silk or cotton wouldn’t have stopped them from freezing. What’s one layer of clothing against an icy cavern?
Tiffany says
And calcite is made up of accumulation of the shells of really tiny sea creatures.
Suelder says
{Science teacher, here}
Chalk is literally the shells of millions of tiny sea creatures from hundreds of millions of years ago. It was once alive. I think that’s where this was coming from.
kimmelane says
Regarding drawing the circles on grass, I am assuming that it is impossible to use a stick of chalk to draw on grass, but that sprinkling a layer of powdered chalk might work for creating a 30-yard-diameter circle.
Tink says
I don’t think the arcane circles have to be made out of chalk. In the last book, what was his name — the brother of the guy kidnapped — created a circle out of small flowers that he grew by tossing seed onto the ground. In this case, the flowers are also organic, like the chalk (didn’t know the origins of chalk; you learn such interesting things on this blog!).
So the question is, can arcane circles be drawn using anything, like spray paint, or can they only be drawn using something organic? Could Cornelius train his legion of ferrets, Chinese badgers, and other animals to form an arcane circle, for example? (Not that he would — it probably wouldn’t be healthy for the animals to be used as the circle.)
Tiffany says
For some reason, I am now imagining someone surrounded by a cloud of feathers when teleported in a down jacket. The synthetic shell disintegrated by the spell and only the feathers made the trip.
kommiesmom says
Adam Pierce made a circle of fire in Burn for Me – though you could argue that the fuel was organically based…
Ilona says
1. The chalk circle on the grass is made with powdered chalk the way veve are sometimes drawn by voodoo practitioner or sand mandalas by monks.
2. Chalk is an organic sedimentary rock. It contains fossilized remains of living creatures. Rock salt, by contrast, is a chemical sedimentary rock, which is formed by evaporation of salt water. Chalk under a microscope below.
Liv W says
Aha!! Powdered chalk on grass makes sense; thanks.
Re question 2, I just realized I must’ve badly misinterpreted what was meant by “affected” in relation to organic compounds and teleportation, hence my confusion. Thanks again!
C A Perez says
A question about writing: your worlds are so big, beautiful, and detailed. You also have a lot of side characters that you manage to fit in without your books ever seeming unwieldy. I’m 85K+ words into my novel, and the story has basically 1 main setting and 4 main characters. I feel like it needs more breadth/depth? What’s your advice on expanding your worlds/characters and making them believable/realistic? I’m not sure if adding more characters would make it feel too forced?
Ilona says
Sounds like you are trying to artificially pad it.
Does your story deliver an emotional punch? Have you let anybody else read it? Were they excited when they finished? If so, no need to add anything.
If it feels shallow, I’d go back and really look at the emotional conflict. What is going with the characters? Are the stakes high enough? Is the payoff satisfying enough? A work of fiction can have the most scatterbrained plot but still succeed on character strength, but not the other way around.
Candice says
In the KD universe, are there any people who have caught LycV and not gone loup? I know Andrea for obvious reasons, but I can’t think of anyone else who just went shifter instead. That brings up my next question; is Derek a Loup with rigid control? I remember Jim saying he smelled weird and his black out moment in Magic Stars but it wasn’t explicit noted that he was Loup or Not.
Tink says
Andrea didn’t catch LyncV; she was born of a human infected with LyncV and could transform to hyena, and a real hyena that contracted LyncV and was able to shift to human.
And I think it was implied when Julie was bitten that some people bitten and contracting the virus could transform without going loup; it all depended on their viral loup.
Derek didn’t go fully loup. In his novella, he said Curran he’d (Derek) would always be riding the line (to paraphrase), which is why Julie said in the novella that he couldn’t skip transforming periodically and going to the wood to hunt. Not changing for awhile puts a strain on his control. And people who haven’t gone loup can later go loup. It sounds like it’s a constant battle not to lose total control, which would lead to going loup.
Hope I got all that right.
Ilona says
Yes. There are people who are bitten and become shapeshifters. They are called first-generation. 🙂
Candice says
Thank you. So is Derek a Loup?
sarafina says
No. Loups are insane hunger-crazed animals whose only desires are to rape and eat.
Heather says
Have you ever thought about doing a coloring book based on the stories? It would be fun, especially with some of the descriptions from the innkeeper books.
Candice says
I am listening to Burn For Me and I had this exact thought about the Arcane circles. It would be fun!
AnnB says
On a similar note… I once tried an interior decorating game called Design Home, where the player gets to decorate rooms in different types of houses. It was a fun concept, but the furniture available in the game wasn’t very exciting. It struck me how much more fun it would have been to play an Innkeeper version. Like, you get a brief description of an alien species and then you’re challenged with designing a room they will like. It would especially be fun if you were able to use alien furniture like levitating beds or portraits with bejewelled eyes (in case you were decorating for Caldenia’s nemesis, that is).
I realize this is not even remotely feasible for an author to produce unless a game designer drops by and volunteers to create one, but it’s totally my dream IA merchandise. 🙂
Ilona says
I can’t draw. 🙂
Ali says
I volunteer for the drawing! ?
Alisa says
You wanna go feed the chickens with me tomorrow?
Ilona says
I don’t know, will I get any eggs as payment?
Alisa says
We’ll split the loot 😉
Charlotte says
Do you have any crazy fans? Any tattoos of you and the hubs on someones back? And i hope your enjoying the new digs. This is the only blog I read, and ….once again you guys suck me in. Its relatable and I hope the best for ya’ll.
Ilona says
Everyone is perfectly sane here. Peeeeerfectly sane.
Judy says
In several of the KD books, much is made of Curran being a First. Is this explained further in KD10 or a bits and pieces. Wondered why Roland and Erra so concerned about it.
Will we like Hugh after the book?
Thanks for taking the time and the possibility of the 1st chapter of KD 10 prior to August
Tina in NJ says
At one point, I think while Julie is going loup, Curran is explaining to Kate about the correlation of Lyc-v counts and loupism. He uses Dali as an example and says she’s a First. In Gunmetal Magic, Anapa tells Andrea that he was once human and save some jackel (?) pups. Somehow, this relationship results in him becoming a shapeshifter, a First. He doesn’t want Curran involved because Curran’s a First, too.
Tink says
Huh. I don’t remember him saying Dali is a First. I’ll have to reread that part again.
Ilona says
I’ll do a blog post, I guess. I thought we explained it in Gunmetal Magic.
Re Hugh: I don’t know. 🙂
Shannon says
A First means that his shapeshifting magic stems from a much earlier and stronger magic than the regular shifters. They have way more power, control, etc.
First magic comes from even before Kate’s/Roland’s line… it’s primal/ancient.
Its significant that Curran is a North American Lion (now extinct in real life) and his really old magic stems from the American land. It stands to reason that if Little Conlan gets equal parts magic from his parents, he’d be able to claim land in America with ease since he’s got the ancestral magic to back it up. They said Roland came to America to claim land because some of it was ripe for the picking without the Native American’s generations of magic users to exert their stronger hold on it. The used the example of Louisiana being a state he’d want to avoid trying to claim with all that strong voodoo magic already holding the land.
Emily says
I absolutely love your books and love listening to them as well as reading them. Any chance that the last 3 edge books and the later KD books will be made available on audible in the UK.
Ilona says
I don’t know. I don’t know why Tantor did not distribute to UK. They are not giving the most transparent responses to our inquiries.
Emily says

I’d already emailed your publicist (Ace and Avon) last year before your tours, but is there any way you could come to the Northeast (NYC or Philly or somewhere in that vicinity) for your next tour?
I’ve been a fan since 2009 and I feel like you’ve been everywhere except here! I know you must have TONS of fans in NYC and it’s my dream to meet you guys.

Also Florida. Please come to Florida. North Florida, to be specific. Anywhere between Pensacola and Jacksonville would do!
Jeanette says
Yes, if you would, I could come over from Mississippi!
Ilona says
We were in Jacksonville last year. 🙂
Ilona says
We do not control where we go, unfortunately. We can say no occasionally but that’s it.
Shnelle Hope says
Why did you guys want to write a Hugh novel and why do you think people have requested him so much? I am having a hard time being sympathetic to him as he has caused so much personal and irrevocable harm.
Tink says
Heh. They didn’t. It was an April Fool’s joke that apparently backfired on them. I think the idea grew on them. It would be an interesting challenge as a writer, I would think — how do you redeem a guy you wrote as being so bad? Do you even redeem him? (Oooh, do you redeem him?)
Paroma says
It’s been done before by some other authors. If anyone here reads Georgette Heyer’s historical romances, then you might remember the villain of Black Moth. He was this wicked, cynical, selfish nobleman who carelessly abused his power. Later, Heyer turned him into the hero (though never quite heroic) of These Old Shades. Man turned slightly less elderly and decrepit, but stayed essentially just as selfish and cruel. UNTIL a young girl dressed as a street urchin became his pageboy and they slowly developed this strong bond between them. Girl was no pushover, but it was the fact that he could be kind to her when kindness was not something he was used to being that brought about his redemption. There were problematic bit in that story that a modern reader would take issue with, but I’ve always loved how Heyer kept the essence of his villainy intact but showed us that the right circumstances can change anyone.
Ilona says
Let me quote Jeaniene Frost: “If it fights like a romance hero, talks like a romance hero, and looks like a romance here, it must be a romance hero.”
The thing is, even though Hugh is a bastard, he is a fascinating bastard and a lot of people are intrigued by the idea of redemption. What would it cost him to be banished from Roland? How much did Roland control him? Can he ever atone for his sins? Can he be redeemed by a love of A Good Woman?
Oshi says
I’d pay for him to be redeemed by the side of an axe…or a Good Man as much as a Good Woman.
Jukebox says
Haha good one. Axe sound more appealing. Romance hero Curran-style over Hugh any day.
Jan_NL says
I’m Team Hugh 🙂 As Ilona said, he is a complicated fellow. That is why I also like the Barabas-Christopher — complicated means interesting. Plus Hugh is just a villain I loved to hate and I look forward to his redemption. It will, I’m sure, be delicious 🙂
L. says
In Magic Slays, Curran watched Kate do blood-magic ritual to save Julie from Lyc-V infection. Curran told Kate afterward that she didn’t look like herself. I’ve always wanted to know what he saw. Did the amount of magic which was filtered through Kate temporarily alter her in some way? Thank you and get well soon!
Ilona says
Remember when she does the face thing in Magic Binds and everyone freaks out? She looked like that.
Larissa says
The last Rogan’s POV we got had Part 1 on the title, does that mean that we’ll also get more parts? Thanks!
Ilona says
I have mentioned it to Gordon a number of times. He says we will get one soon.
Larissa says
Yeyyyy, that’s great! 🙂
KatRen says
Thank you so much for this blog post. It allows me to ask a question I’ve been wondering about since Magic Burns:
The way I understand it, a mystical character could manifest during a flare, if enough people believed in it and pictured it in a real-world-setting. I think there was the example that everyone imagined Zeus on Mt. Olympus and not at the Mall…
So, my question: If ever there was a flare on Christmas Eve, would Santa Claus appear?
Ilona says
Yes!
Oshi says
I’m not sure I want Santa around…they Fey were never as nice as the stories say.
Brooke Travis says
Ooh, but the gods are manipulated by their faithful.
https://ilona-andrews.com/forum/index.php?topic=1189.300
So, Santa actually probably WOULD be as we imagine him, especially considering how mainstreamed and commercialized Christmas has become. Everyone has the same idea of what Santa is like.
ms bookjunkie says
If enough people watch the short film Rare Exports Inc., the manifestation of Father Christmas could be very disturbing. (Watch at your own discretion. Not for the faint of heart…or stomach. And FFS, don’t let your kids watch!)

*evil cackle*
kelsey says
did kate go to school when she was little? i can’t imagine voron home schooling her. and they kept on moving right? always wondered about that…
Ilona says
She didn’t have a formal education. She can read, write, and count, and she can speak and read several dead languages, but when Barabas tries to explain electron orbits to her, she blanks out. Voron homeschooled her and he also brought her to different people who taught her bits and pieces of what she needed to know. She never went to formal school, unless it was for a very brief time for a specific purpose.
Gale D says
I thought it was sorta like a young John Connor (from Terminator). He had very little formal education. Mostly travel to people who could teach specific skills, and hiding.
Oshi says
Didn’t she attend the Order’s Academy for a while?
Rena says
Yes
Ilona says
Order’s Academy is post high school. It’s a college. The question specified “when Kate was little.”
Joanne says
Any hope of future Kinsmen books?!
Ilona says
Yes.
Angel says
This yes just made my day!!! I love the kinsmen world.
Candice says
Hope you feel better soon!
Will there be any more Curran POVs? Specifically magic rises? I’d love to see his bought son Kate’s fight with Hugh!
Thanks for answering questions ?
Candice says
Whoops *thoughts on*
Ilona says
No more POVs. We are working on the last book.
Bre'Anna says
Before the magic came back to the world and Roland and his sister were asleep were they just in a cave somewhere and it was hidden or were they in home and had people watching over them?
Ilona says
They were both buried in caves. 🙂
Jenn says
I’m curious to know if connecting the Edge and Innkeeper series was planned from the start, or if was a matter of “hey we have a need for a mysterious arbitrator, and we really wanted to follow up with these characters so let’s make them this!” Did you know when you started Innkeeper that they would make an appearance? Can we hope to see a book centered around the arbitrators someday, even if a different group entirely? It seems like the trouble they get into would open all sorts of fun doors to read!
Ilona says
When we were writing Clean Sweep, we put them in a market place for fun. It seemed natural to use them for book 2. We don’t plan Innkeeper series arc in advance.
Kristi says
Wait! What? They were in a market place in Clean Sweep? How did I not know this?
Tink says
I didn’t catch that until I reread book 1 after reading book 2. I think it’s when Dina and Sean go to Baha-char. I can’t remember what drew her attention to them, if it was something about how they looked, or if Sean smelled Jack and she noticed Sean sniffing toward Jack.
Rena says
It was how he walked like a swordsman.
Liz says
it was the bird that george was using. Sean made a note that the bird was dead. even tho it was flying around it was dead.
Kelly says
I just re-read this yesterday and totally missed this!
Kristi says
Ah, I just reread that part. I had totally missed it, and I re-listened to the whole series just last month. And it’s more than just a brief mention—George and Jack are having a conversation.
Jackie says
Do you listen to music while you write? If so, do different genres help you when writing different character’s dialog?
Ilona says
Mostly soundtracks, usually game soundtracks. Assassin Creed is great. Only a few songs with vocals – they are distracting.
It doesn’t help with the dialogue but with a feeling of the novel. Like this one always makes me feel the vampire cathedral. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2UVi5Pzjjs0
Aneira says
I love these games! And the song! Though my favorites are Sanctuary from AC2, Echoes of the Roman Ruins from Brotherhood and Byzantium from Revelations. It’s the only thing I can listen to while studying that doesn’t distract me.
Lynn says
What has been the most fun part about writing the Kate stories?
Ilona says
Everything! The world, Kate, violence, one-liners, friendships. We loved the ride.
Red says
When you come to the Phoenix Comicon in May 2018, will we be able to get a signature/picture with you?
Ilona says
Yes. If you see us, come up. It doesn’t matter if we are talking to someone, come up. We are there to take pictures and sign things and meet you. That’s the whole point of the trip. 🙂
Sleepy says
Are there going to be books for sale at the comicon? I know when you do book signings at stores we are generally required to support the store as well, but I’m not sure in this case?
Keysha says
What happened to Dory Davis ?
Ilona says
Who is Dory Davis?
Kyle Belliston says
Double D/Dory Davis. She is the wolf who killed the master of the dead in Magic Breaks.
Ilona says
Oh, Double D. She was tried and plea bargained to a life in prison.
Oshi says
I think Keysha is referring to the wolf shifter in the book where Kate claimed Atlanta.
C says
This is kind of a random question but about how many ‘book’ pages would you say your Friday posts for Innkeeper tend to be on average?
Ilona says
Traditionally a “page” is defined as being between 200-250 words. The innkeeper posts are typically between 1,000 and 2,000 words in length, so about 5 and 10 pages. Usually about 6-7.
Michelle says
Would you consider writing the baby’s story at some point? His gene pool is kinda dumb founding. I didn’t even know the series was ending and he has been the story I’ve been curious about.
Ilona says
Possibly.
Debbie Vassar says
1. When the two of you are writing, have you ever both had a story line that matched or was the exact same as the other without discussing it?
2. Have you ever been listening or reading what the other was plotting into the story line and thought “do you secretly do drugs and not share because you had to be doing them to go there” type of moments?
3. As Kate10 is complete will we still be getting future POV novellas?
Ilona says
1. We come up with story line together. It is never he plots separately and I plot separately and we hash it out. It’s a discussion thing from the start and usually neither one of us has any idea about where stuff has to go.
2. No. Because we do not plot separately.
3. There are no plans for Curran POVs at this time.
Debbie Vassar says
Thank you for the time you invested in answering all of our questions, even when you have answered them before. I am glad to see you are feeling a bit better from last week. I love what you write almost as much as you do. Maybe a bit more since I don’t have any of the hassles involved behind hanging up a do not disturb sign. I hope that the muse keeps you on a happy path for many years of fun stories.
Debbie Vassar says
* besides hanging
Simon Lyon says
Not a question, a suggestion for what ails you: Chicken Soup – with peas, carrots, cubed potatoes and a bit of ginger.
It’s not just witches who can create magical potions!
Sometimes the old ways are the best ways.
Ilona says
Yum!
Susanne says
Will there ever be another Alpha story?
Ilona says
Probably not.
Andrea D. says
Oh, how sad. The Alpha story blew my mind ….
Andrea D. says
I did not want to post a picture … sorry for that.
Ilona says
It’s a lovely pic!
Andrea D. says
Thank you 🙂
Carol says
In White Hot, Diana tells Nevada that dogs will do as they’re told, but ‘cats need to be convinced it’s their problem.’
In Wildfire, Matilda says “It’s a kitty” before Zeus even comes out from under the table. Later, Zeus tracks Matilda, rescues her from Harcourt, and carries her home. When they attack Sturm’s fortress, Matilda sits with the jaguars, and they trot off to the tunnels with no hesitation.
Am I on track in thinking that Matilda -as a budding animagus- has a special affinity for/with critters of the feline persuasion, that they are so cooperative in her presemce?
Ilona says
Zeus decided that he being kidnapped is his problem. 🙂 Our Maine Coon accompanies us on dog walks. We tried putting a leash on him, but he only wants to come when it’s his decision.
Lisa M says
Have you tried a harness, or leash and collar? I’m wondering if a harness would work for one of my cats. She’s always trying to go outside, while our other cat is content with looking out the windows.
Rena says
My sister puts a harness and leash to take her Bangal out. He hates it on principle, but he comes running when she picks it up because he wants to go outside so badly.
Cecelia says
We had a cat, Turbo, that was half Maine Coon and our neighbors had a full blood Maine Coon, and both of them figured out how to get out of their harness – wiggle backwards! They ended up getting a more straight jacket type harness for their cat and never let her get near Turbo again in case they were communicating somehow. Nothing ever kept Turbo contained except her fear of getting too far away from our door.
Cecelia says
This is Turbo, and this is a very deceptive picture. People pet her at their own risk.
Deanne says
Have you any plans to continue the Kinsman series? I LOVE, Love, love the world and characters you created there!!!
Ilona says
Yes.
Lisa M says
Yippeeee!!!!
Rena says
Woot, I love all of your work, but I have probably reread those the most.
Drew says
Oh, that’s so awesome! I love the Kinsman universe.
Dradair says
I love all of your books, but I’ve definitely reread the Kinsman books the most.
Patricia Schlorke says
Yay! ? I know there were two books. I have Silver Shark. The other one I can’t find. Hopefully it will come back.
Deanne says
Yay! I’ve reread them both about a hundred times. Love your all writing … but the kinsman and innskeeper series are my favorites!
Deanne says
That’s wonderful news! I love all your writing but the kinsman and innskeepers are my favorites!
Pam says
Did the Hidden Legacy series grow out of the Kinsman series?
MerryB says
Can Arabella be different sizes in her alter form?
Ms. Kim says
Oh, what a good question. I’d like to know that too.
Ilona says
Not yet.
MerryB says
Thank you. I hope you all stay well.
Mikey says
Will you do a what if story about what kate would have been like raised by the witches as you mentioned might have happened if in magic slays
Ilona says
Oh no. But neat idea.
L. says
I’ve wondered about that too. Great question!
Roxy Sol says
Will there be more Rogan POV??? Pleeeease!
Ilona says
Gordon says yes.
Rena says
Has he said what scene? I would dearly love to see what Rogan’s reaction to Arabella’s jumping out of the copter was.
ada says
Oh the copter/freeway scene would be perfect for a Rogan POV!
Lisa M says
“I had also written things. They read like I was really high on something.”
Am I the only one who is curious about what you wrote while not really high?
Vicki V says
I really want to read this too. Is there any way we’ll get to read some of it? 🙂
I hope you feel better soon!
Ilona says
It’s missing words and just plain wrong words like winder instead of a window.
Dianna Kilgore says
Wait! Winder is how you say it in the south. Hehe here in Tennessee.
Aggiereader says
How long in advance did you plan for Jezebel to act as an agent for Roland? Can we completely trust any of the characters?
Y’all are so kind to listen to our questions!
Ilona says
It was planned when it is discovered Jennifer betrayed the Pack. I don’t recall the details now, but if you go through that book, you will realize that somebody else also had to be reporting to Roland or Hugh.
Aggiereader says
Oh man! I am going to have to go back and read that again. Thank you for the response!
Marni says
Are you going to give us more of Saimin’s cousin‘s story? I loved the short story…
Ilona says
Not sure. Maybe?
Dradair says
I love all of your books, but I’ve definitely reread the Kinsman books the most. I loved the Adam – Siroun partnership in Retribution Clause as well. Would love to hear their story. Thanks for being awesome!
Trish says
Hi sorry if this is the wrong place to ask: I remember a while ago there was a Curran POV of when him, Kate and Julie were moving into their house and Curran was discussing his family life with Julie. I can’t seem to find this anywhere. I remember reading Part 1 but never got the chance to read Part 2. Did I dream this, or is there somewhere on the site that I can still read this?? Love ALL of your books by the way!
Gale D says
I was going to ask about part 2 as well! Would love to know what happens next.
Part 1 was on Good reads.
https://www.goodreads.com/author_blog_posts/8101122-curran-prequel-pov-part-one
Curran Prequel POV-It was moving day. Kate, Julie and me were taking boxes out of the back of a rented truck and carrying them into our new place…
Thanks
Ilona says
I don’t remember if Gordon ever finished that one. I will ask.
Karen says
Thank you for the answer session! Loved reading the questions and the answers! Hope you feel better soon!
Ilona says
You are welcome, and there were awesome questions. 🙂
Kailin says
Do you have a plan, even a tiny inkling of a plan, to continue the Hidden Legacy series? Either with Rogan and Nevada as the main characters, or a sub-series with Alessandro and Catalina?(thats mostly my wishful thinking for the sub-series, but I have no doubt that it would be amazing). I just re-read the whole series and I know you plan to work on Hugh’s book next but I was just curious. Best wishes for easy(or should I say simple) editing with Kate!!
Ilona says
We are in talks with Avon.
Liz says
I love your books. You are by far my favorite author. But of all of them, I have read the Legacy books three times.

Kate says
So mysterious! (I know it isn’t intentional, as you can’t tell us what hasn’t been decided yet, but I’ve been holding my breath waiting for confirmation on the future of this series. I LOVE Hidden Legacy, and how much mystery in the plot still exists, as well of the world building potentials. I love Kate Daniels as well – the feeling I have now reminds me of how I felt when we were this far into the series structure of her story. (Aka you two write well, and I have not found anything, at any point, that you you have written that I didn’t devour. Including your Alphas origin story.))
I appreciate also how you take the time to tell your readers why or why not you make the decision to continue writing in a series or world. You do a fabulous being up front with all of us nosy fans, and it seems like you balance creating to support our enthusiasm/obsession and making decisions based on your own needs, interests, and writerly muses.
Aka – you write good, you portray yourselves well as people (especially in this dream of inflated egos) and I am overjoyed to read whatever you write, based on your previous stellar works.
*Fangirl moment ended.*
Shannon says
Hidden Legacy is my absolute favorite. ❤️ I love the inventive magic talents, quirky family dynamics, Nevada kicking butt as a strong female heroine… and most of all, I love MAD ROGAN ??
KMD says
anything we can do to help convince avon? lol…like fly a banner or picket outside their offices or stage a sit-in? ha! hidden legacy was the first of your books I read so it has a special place in my heart!
M says
Hello,
I hope you feel better. My question has to do with Julie and Derek, will we see a new novella featuring them soon? Also will we see more of the Dragon in Kate 10 or in a related work?
Also, I also vote for a really good chicken soup with ginger and carrots.
P.S. is there any hope that you will attend RT con in Reno?
Leah says
Are you guys coming to RT this year???????
Ilona says
Nope!
Jenn says
Yes they are sneaky. You have to be on the look out for the sneak and pay attention ?
Jenn says
Ok that was a reply to Kristi about the market place
Kristi says
Jenn, when I went back just now, I can’t believe I missed it!
Jenn says

Jovan says
How did Kate’s mom die twice? The mother witch (can’t remember her name right now) said she had met Kate’s mom when she came for her mother’s funeral, and then Roland dangled meeting her in Washington state to get Kate to stay away from the djinn. He said she was very ill and wouldn’t last long.
Also, Curran says that the time in mishmar was the closest Kate came to death when discussing it with Erra, but when her magic word backfired against the djinn wasn’t it worse?
Hope you get well soon, if you have a food Lion nearby they have a kind of tea called butter mint. It’s mint and vanilla, but tastes like ambrosia
Oshi says
The Authorlord said that Roland was lying. There is an answer among some of the questions in the first page.
Cecelia says
That was Kate’s maternal grandmother, not her mother. I don’t remember feeling a disconnect with the timing of the near death conversation, but it probably would make sense if we reread the books again. What a hardship.
Ilona says
The first question was answered earlier.
The second question: Kate’s stroke affected her brain more than her vital organ systems. She could’ve lived quite a while in a near vegetative state.
Jovan says
Ah, got it. That would be a horrible life. And I imagine Roland would use her like a battery a la guardians of the Galaxy volume 2. Thanks
Cheryl Anne farley says
Please take extra care. Here in central California people get this bronchitis flu mono combo that is terrible. Rest and then rest some more. Love the Maine coon with Helen too….
Oshi says
Thank you for the Q&A.
How serious was Leon (please tell me someone talked him out of it) about going Dark-Horse?
Does/Will Cornelius ever meet someone that he connects with like his wife?
I still don’t really understand why Augustine and Connor fight so much. It feel’s like the way brother’s fight but what the hell is with them?
Penelope27 says
I wondered about Rogan and Augustine also. I get the impression that there is more trust there than should be between 2 Houses/Primes. I got the feeling that if something happened to Augustine, such as he went missing, Rogan would have 2 wards show up on his doorstep (who would in turn hire Nevada or agency to find him). I was glad that he ended up on team Baylor.
Michelle says
They are effectively fraternity brothers from college and Rogan was part of hazing Cornelius, I totally see their love/hate/torture relationship.
Ilona says
Rogan and Augustine were in college together and shared the same idealistic notions that they were going to tell their families to stuff it and do great things, instead of turning into their dads. Rogan did tell his family to stuff it and went into the military, because he wanted to make a difference. Unfortunately, it beat his idealism out of him very quickly. Augustine had suffered a major tragedy in his life and ended up doing exactly what he said he wouldn’t do: turn into his father. They each envy the other a little, they are competing with each other, and they are, in a sense, brothers. They both knew each other before they became monsters, which is a bittersweet thing.
Mel s says
I’ve been wondering about this, and i’m pretty sure I’m just missing peices, but what ever happened to Nataraja? He seemed like he was going to be kind of a big deal..then disappeared in the 2nd or 3rd(?) Kate book. Please and thank you!
Elf says
In Magic Breaks, after Hugh has magically teleported Ghastek and Kate to Mishmar, as they are hanging in the watery oubliette, Ghastek tells Kate what happened to Nataraja: Apparently he started mumbling to himself, killed his giant snake Wiggles and left its pieces strewn about for a journeyman to find, and eventually investigators from the Golden Legion came and took him away. 🙂
Mel s says
WOAH how did I miss that?? Thank you, Elf!
Ilona says
Elf answered this. 🙂
Simon Lyon says
I figure you probably can’t do it in the current Maud’s story – but could you at some point give use some more tantalising details of how Dina’s “magic” works? It’s clear the Inn is sentient but there’s obviously technology involved as well – “any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”. The symbiot nature of Dina with her Inn is the most fascinating part of the ongoing story, More please!
Ilona says
Spoilers cannot be revealed.
Sari says
Hi. In the Hidden Legacy series did Nevada’s family name ‘Baylor’ come from a name her father James made up (as he was hiding from his mother) or is it her mother’s last name that James took when they married? Asking because her maternal grandma last name is Mrs. Afram…
Thank you! Love all your books!
sarafina says
The Baylor name is really common in North Texas, anyway. The Baylor Hospital system (which combined with Scott & White recently), Baylor University (of the football player rapists protected by Ken Starr of Monica Lewinsky fame) and in Baptist circles.
Ilona says
Sarafina hit it on the head: Nevada’s father took one of the most common Texas last names.
Michael Reed says
Greetings from Japan! Mind you I have about 600 questions but I will do my best to stick to one and a comment! Comment first – I love your books. They’re brilliant, make me laugh, and just some of the best parts of any cloudy and/or sunny day so thank you! And I love all of your writing tips and tricks, they’re literally the best so here is my question!
I keep feeling like the book I am writing needs to be edited furiously so I can’t get past like 40,000 words without going back multiple times. Do you have any recommendations for what to tell myself so I can finish it and then edit it? It’s not even a block it’s just I want it to be perfect.
P.S. the ‘say pop’ line from Kate Daniels has been taught to many students along with many others!
Brooke Travis says
Oh, yeah, the “say, ‘Pop’.” I love that one.
Brooke Travis says
But I have also wondered if you edit your stories as you go, or if you say, “eh, it’s good enough for now; we’ll dress it up later.” You know, just to move on to the next scene.
Ilona says
When we started out, we would often edit the beginning. The common wisdom says you can’t edit and write at the same time. One is critical and the other is creative. In reality, most authors edit as they write. It’s common for me to rewrite a sentence five times before I move on.
Let’s talk about why you are going back and editing.
Are you editing because new ideas are occurring to you as you write, and you think they would make it better?
Are you editing because you got to a stubborn spot in the novel and you’re avoiding moving forward?
Are you editing because your beginning doesn’t quite line up with your middle now that you got to it?
If you tell me what the hold up, we can figure out how to get past it.
Carol says
Wow! Japan! Totally awesome!
Shannon says
I read a book a day and your writing is some of my favorite! Thank you for the stories. One of the things I love most is when your hilarious conversations make me laugh out loud. Julie is one of my favorites. I’m wondering and hoping some day you may write more of her story (with Derek and Dragon kid).
Chances this will happen are:
1-for sure someday, we would like to explore this.
2-meh, who knows, maybe, could go either way
3-no way, no how, go re-read the only one you will ever get
Hope you are feeling better!

Nona says
Derek and Ascanio, they have some great soon to be best friends chemistry going on…..
Can they get their own novella? Add some Deandra, perhaps? Her character pounced off the pages!
Ilona says
There is already a Derek novella. 🙂
Cecelia says
Are most of your characters like the Atsani and the Shepherd based on actual mythological or folk characters or do you make most of them up? And how in the world did you come up with Desandra? She boggles my mind and I really enjoy the way you’ve worked her into the stories.
I hope you get better soon.
Cecelia says
P.S. Do you ever get tired of us thanking you for your storytelling brilliance?
McMe says
I think they’re mostly based on “real” folklore creatures…
The magic in these books works based on what people believe, so the authors draw inspiration from actual Earth mythologies to populate their world.
Ilona says
The motif of wise shepherd is very common to Caucasus. It’s a way of life. Apparently if you google Atsany, you get our blog, but whatever, still a good link.
https://www.goodreads.com/author_blog_posts/3416417-hobbits-of-caucasus
Cecelia says
Thank you! Your books are introducing other folklore into our culture, and I could recognize some of them, so I was hoping most of them ARE based on real historical folk tales.
Mikey says
Have you ever thought of a crossover between hidden legacies, innkeeper, and Kate
What would happen if sean where to get infected with lyc v
Tink says
They did something like that! It was on the blog. Dina arbitrated (ooh, foreshadowing! I just caught that.) between Kate and Curran on one side facing off against Nevada and Rogan. There was a lot of trashtalking going on.
Actually, it might not have been on this blog. I can’t remember the name of the site, but around the time of the NCAA basketball tournament, they host a bracket voting thingy where you vote for best book. Or maybe it was best hero/heroine or biggest badass. One year, a Kate book faced off against a Nevada book. In honor of that, there was the little mediation snippet.
I might be wrong on the impetus, but I know there was a little short story. Anyone remember where that was?
Tina in NJ says
I found under Search in the menu, probably in Bits and Pieces. The story where Gerard and Helen meet is also there.
Ilona says
Nope. We are not doing a crossover. 😛
sarafina says
Re: Hidden Legacy:
1) Will we get more info about Leon and Bern’s fathers?
2) And will their Mom show up again?
This Q&A is great! Hope you recover quickly.
Ilona says
1. Possibly.
2. Probably. 😛
Susan M says
Kate & Nevada refernce earth. Dina’s world references Texas. Yet when George had to get Sophie from the Edge world it was planets and systems away traveled thru baha-char. Do you deliberately give us reference points, for reader familiarity? Is it world that building substitutes each storyline’s ‘need’ and you just rotate thru all the different earth(s) that you create?
Thanks for writing, I enjoy your work.
Ilona says
No. It is explained in the book that George and Jack come from an alternative Earth, a splinter reality.
Robin DeTota says
Are we going to see Dina’s Christmas at all, I was hoping to see what Maud brought back from her shopping trip? I really enjoy the Innkeeper series, it has a sweetness to it, probably because as Sean puts it that Dina is a carebear. Thank you for your snippets and letting us ask you all sorts of questions besides your awesome books.
Ilona says
Thinking about it.

I really enjoy the Innkeeper series, it has a sweetness to it, probably because as Sean puts it that Dina is a carebear.
Yes, that was precisely my thought as well. Not to put down Maud, but her story is making me realize what’s so special about Dina’s. The sweetness was one of the things that came to mind. I don’t mean a saccharine type of sweetness, more like…the kindness and empathy she extends to other people. The lack of ugliness in her mind. It’s a bit hard to put into words. She reminds me of Tohru Honda from Fruits Basket. Not in the sense that the characters are the same, but that they both have a deeply compassionate character and evoke the same feeling in me when I read.
Aneira says
1. I really liked the setting in Magic Rises. Will we ever see more of the post-Shift world, outside of North America? I’d love to read something set in East Asia, or maybe Russia, if you ever write a book about Roman.
2. Are there any plans to write something about Ghastek? Or maybe Desandra?
3. What were the side effects eating the saber-toothed tiger god thing had on Curran? And why did he eat it? I remember him telling Kate it felt right at the time, but is there something more to it?
I love the Kate Daniels series! It’s been my favorite UF series since I discovered it a couple of years ago. Also, thanks for doing this!
Nancyc says
I thought it was really interesting that Kate got pregnant after Curran eat a god. (Question 3) Contemporiars think Kate and Curran, their kid is going to be of the scale, especially if you add a god to the mix!
Ilona says
1. Russia is already post-Shift. On a serious note, Russia I remember doesn’t exist anymore. It wouldn’t be right.
2. No, but they do have a big role in Magic … what is the name… Oy. Triumphs.
3. Magic Triumphs.
Kat T. says
Hi, why did Kate smell different on her wedding day? Was she already pregnant then?
Gale D says
I thought it was the flowers in her headpiece, from the witches?
Kat T. says
Curran removed the headpiece and said that it wasn’t the flowers.
Ilona says
No, he said it wasn’t the flowers that were making him crazy. 🙂
Cecelia says
The flowers in the bouquet the witches made (or was it a crown?).
sarafina says
I wondered if those flowers had some sort of fertility power as Kate conceived immediately. Maybe, maybe not.
CharisN says
Some time back you used the Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale as an example of a story idea and how it might be developed (How to Write). I kinda fell in love with your ideas. Any chance you might at some time far far away, rewrite Red’s story along your lines?
Thank you.
MerryB says
Lol. Me, too.
Ilona says
There is only so much time. 🙂
Tos Al says
Will we ever see Red again? It would be cool to see Julie to shake off the last remnants of him in her mind.
ada says
Or punch him in the face.
Ilona says
Not in Kate 10.
D*Lm* a says
Something something ” is a joy forever”
a well written book fits this, its not page count, it is about being long enough for your craft to develop the world & colors & people, living their life. That we ca feel them.
Your books bring me joy, sprung forth from your forehead
or idle musings that center you to bring forth a tale not yet told
Aiden says
In Rogan POV during Wildfire, Rogan mentions that the first time the youngest son of House Adé-Afẹ́fẹ́ had met him, he’d emptied a trashcan over Connor’s head. 1)It’s hilarious. 2) Was there a reason?
Also, and it’s ok if you don’t answer, seriously, for the Alpha book, I think I remember you saying you didn’t like the ending or at least that you had to change it. What would you have written in different circumstances? (Again, it’s ok if this question is unanswered.)
And thank you for the FAQ!
Ilona says
Why do middle-school boys do things? Even they sometimes don’t know. It probably seemed like a good idea at the time.
Monica Martin says
I hope you feel better soon. I get confused too. The fatigue is the reason and I space off a lot looking at the wall lol. I’ve gotta be pretty sick though. ?
Anton says
If you had the chance to live in Kate’s world and could not come back to this one would you?
Ilona says
Depends on my awesome powers or lack thereof and if I can take my family with me.
Anindita Aich says
I’m writing to one of my favourite authors for the first time. Kate daniels is ‘the’ best urban fantasy series. I have lots of questions but one of them is Julie sees magic in the form of combination of colours. Kate’s magic is described and so several others are also described. But you never have mentioned the colour of curran’s magic. Is it simply yellow or does it have a silver mixed with it. And also the concept about curran being a first is also a part about which I’m confused. Thank you for giving us the wonderful persons with whom everyone fell in love.
Ilona says
Cuirran’s magic is typically a strong shapehsifter green. 🙂
JJ says
In Magic Binds, Kate promises Ghastek that he will live forever.
“Swear it,” Ghastek said. I smiled at him. My voice rang. “Rise, Legatus of my Legion. Work with me, advise me, be my friend, and you will live forever.”
But didn’t she promise that after what happened with Julie that she wouldn’t do that again?
Is there another way she can give him eternal life?
Does having Erra available to advise make Cullan reconsider?
Thanks
Aneira says
I could be wrong, but I think Kate meant that Ghastek wouldn’t die because she cares about him, and when Kate or Roland care about someone (or, in Roland’s case, need someone alive) they simply don’t die, at least not by aging.
IIRC, she also remarks that Ghastek already has what he’s asking for, because she already cares about whether he lives or dies. He just doesn’t know it yet.
Cathy says
Can you imagine the conversations that would’ve happened if Curran didn’t step down and they found this out?
Council to all of the shapeshifters: Kate didn’t care about all of you enough, that’s why some of you are dying of old age….
Ilona says
I’ve answered this already somewhere on the thread. 🙂
Cleo says
Have you ever considered creating or transforming one of your books (particular Kate) into comics? I feel like there’s a niche for it, and they’re getting picked up like crazy- in my mind it would be like Brian K Vaugn’s Saga series, which I totally recommend, its fantastically weird.
Ilona says
If any comic studios wanted to buy the rights, we would sell them.
Reethuj says
It says Gerard demille was a guest at an inn. So was he not human?
Is dina only half human?
Verslint says
https://ilona-andrews.com/gerard-demille-and-helen-meet/
Saira says
Thank you Verslint, I’d missed that one too.
Verslint says
My pleasure, it’s one of my favorites
Sara S. says
I never knew this little nugget existed. How did I miss it?
Catherine says
Thank-you! A lovely snippet, how do I find more!!!!
RoadRunner says
This is why we keep begging the Author-Lords to gather all of their short stories that are scattered hither and yon into a set of books we can buy.
Debbie says
I don’t even know what this is from and I thought I’d read every single thing. What is this story?
Verslint says
It’s where Dina’s mom and dad meets, Inkeepers universe
Sarah says
OMG I’d missed this one too! Thanks for the heads up 🙂
Jny says
Ummm…. Re read (for the umpteenth time) the Helen / Gerard piece. The little boy’s name is Charlie. Approximation: “Charlie was going to eat a spider”.
Is Klaus’ full name Charels Klaus DeMille? Had a weird thought: maybe this was Maude’s daughter Helen finding Gerard / Grandpa? I know. Not. But still….
Amanda says
So does this mean Maud and their brother (name is escaping me at the moment, guess I need to reread) are only half siblings to Dina? That could be interesting to see if Dina has different powers or strength because of Gerard.
Jan_NL says
yes – Klaus and Maud are half-siblings to Dina but I don’t think they consider themselves ‘half’ anything. As Arland just recently said: “You’re not a halfer…Both and whole, not half and half” And as someone who has a ‘half-brother’, I can tell you that is nothing but my brother, and that is just a technical term to identify that siblings may have different biological parents 🙂
Jan_NL says
* he is nothing but my brother
Margaret says
Dina’s mother is an innkeeper so I don’t think either of her parents are strictly human.
trailing wife says
As I recall, all humans have magic. It’s just that most are unaware of it, whereas innkeepers are trained and have their inns.
Ilona says
Gerard Demille is human and so is Helen. Innkeepers are all human.
AnnB says
Gerard Demille is human and so is Helen. Innkeepers are all human.
Would that present an obstacle to Sean and any future hybrid werewolf kids becoming innkeepers? (Just thinking aloud; not expecting that to be answered here.)
I guess he could otherwise keep “head of security” as his official title or maybe “gardener” (aka marks his territory on the trees). 🙂
Ilona says
Nope. See first book. 🙂
Shnelle Hope says
What she is referring to is that in the first book she explains that vampires and werewolves are all a human variant. So they can become innkeepers, they are at their base human.
AnnB says
What she is referring to is that in the first book she explains that vampires and werewolves are all a human variant.
True…rereading the scene where they discuss vampires in Clean Sweep, Dina describes vampires as a predatory strain of humans. And the people of Auul appear to have been normal humans before the ossai virus. Though it sounds like vampires are possibly a step further away from humans than werewolves are since Dina says “our species” when talking about vampires, which seems to suggest they are another:
So I guess it’s a matter of definition?
By the way, the rest of that particular scene is funny to revisit now:
Here Dina assumes devouring = cannibalism instead of the sexy kind of devouring. However, arguably the end of OFS involved some devouring under the moonlight. :p Whether they were planned by the authors or not, these types of foreshadowings are fun to spot during rereads. Same thing with the vampire-human hybrids (Helen).
Eric says
Are you planning to tie in any of your other series into the Innkeeper Chronicles like you did with George and company?
Verslint says
I loved that! Reading Inkeepers and thinking to myself ‘I know this character from somewhere… Hey! I see what you did there!’
Carol says
Oh my gosh!! Really??!!! I never noticed that before! You sure?
Verslint says
Yup, if you read the Edge series, you’ll recognize a tiny George and Jack. The main character of that story is their older sister, its a very fun read.
Maria says
Gaston and Sophie as well, from the sequels.
Ilona says
No.
Mel says
Is Grendel, Connery, Brand’s dog from in the mist?
Ilona says
Yes. 🙂
Rogina says
Are you gonna reveal what Grendel really is in KD10?
Ilona says
He is a dog. ::spreads arms:: It will never be stated that he is Bran’s dog. That’s just a fun thing for the readers to add themselves.
Shannon from Texas says
Eee! Thanks, Mel, I never caught that ‘easter egg’.
Makes me wonder what else I’ve missed…
Shannon says
Whhhhaaaatttt! I didn’t know this, either. I did always wonder what his magic entailed besides turning into a huge black hound with blue lightning streaks. Since he knew when Kate was in trouble a few times and came on running to save the day with a doggy take down.
medein says
Whaaat? Who is Bran(d)? Explication, please 🙂
Em says
Pretty sure they are referring to Bran from Magic Burns.
Nicky says
He was the hunter in Magic Burns who flirted with Kate and could disappear into the mist where he lived for centuries. I knew Grendal was a Fae hound but never connected the two before….who knew ? ?
Mel says
Thank you for taking the time to answer, I know you are both quite busy.
Grins, It was nice to think he wouldn’t spend time in the mist with ‘red’, and he knew Kate, I’m glad to know it was true.
Be well. One of the hoard 🙂
Beth says
I don’t remember Bran having a dog in Magic Burns. Is there a short story?
Nin says
It was explicitly said so in the book when Kate visited him in the mist to ask for his blood.
Carol says
I remember that dog with Bran but wow! To have connected those is amazing!!!
Iva says
Is there anywhere I could find all the artwork from the Innkeepers novels at one place? I could not find the illustrations from the Kindle edition of One Fell Sweep anywhere online and I would love to see them in colour (especially the one of Maud and Helen).
Lorrie says
For a quick fix, you can see all the illustrations in OFS in full color if you open it in the kindle app on a tablet/phone instead of on your kindle ereader
Lorrie says
And yes, they’re gorgeous!
Iva says
Oh, I haven’t thought of that. Thank you!
Ilona says
What Lorrie said. 🙂
Verslint says
Have you considered revisiting the short story you started about how Gerard Demille and Helen met?
What is the thought process/choices behind removing characters/scenes from your books? (e.g. Wing’s Ons and the scene of Orro chasing Hellen from the kitchen in ‘One Fell Sweep’)
I realize that the reasons may be specific to each circumstance, but I’m curious as to what some of the deciding factors might be for editors when they’re trimming your manuscript.
Verslint says
Just read through the older comments and found the answer to question 1…. sorry about that
Lina says
Yeah, I miss the “chasing food-stealing Helen and Beast” scene too… ?
But maybe Helen isn’t supposed to be able to open her own doors in her aunts Inn?
But it would be fun if she could, and was forever disappointed in all other dwellings that aren’t magic ?
Daliya Varghese says
Hi, can you tell me where I can find the ‘chasing food-stealing Helen and Beast’ scene..? Is it available online..?
Cindy says
It was in the weekly posting version of One Fell Sweep but was cut in the final edits before publication. I seem to remember them saying at the time that it was removed because its lighthearted tone broke the tension building around Dina meeting Sean’s parents. It was a great scene!
Ilona says
The deciding factor is, they don’t fit in with the flow of the book so we cut them. It’s our decision, not editor’s. 🙂
Amy says
Hi,
I love your books. Hope you are doing well.
I recently discovered kate daniels series. So i am not sure whether these questions have been addressed before.
Disclaimer: i am a non english speaker. English is like my third language.
My questions are these.
1. In the third book there was mention of Derek and Curran being in the loup cage. My question is why they were not able to break the bars of the loup cage. They were fully clothed. They could have ripped some of their clothes and use it as a bandage or something
2. In eighth book there was a scene where kate discovers barabas and christopher had been living next to her. And Derek comes in asking for duct tape. And he was busted. Derek is a wolf. He can smell people. Why was he not able to identify that kate was inside Barabas’s house
3. In the nineth book Ghastek addresses Christopher as he had never seen Christopher before. But in the seventh book Christopher was in the rescue team. Why didnt he identify Christopher then
4. In the nineth book why didnt Roland bring out his priced blood weapons. Scarlet star and Scourge that we know of. That kind of swords could have decimated the shapwshifter in to a quarter. Kate had to impale herself in that sword to control it.
5. Is Julies magic as old as Kate’s magic. As she is a Koorghan
6. Kate she has the gift of making people immortal. How so? When does she identifies that she has that gift. Some times she says that she will live a normal human years and sometimes centuries. If she lives normal human years. Then what she said to the People is a lie. How will she give them the gift. Curran exiplicitly told her not to make slaves. If kate lives longer then curran julie derek and conlan would die before her. Is she going to bind them as well.
I hope you can atleast get the gist of what i am trying to ask. I hope Jim gets his due and Kate learns stuff from Julie.
Love your books. Kate made me rethink many of my previous favourite heroines. And they all pale by comparison.
She is the most logical heroine that i know of.
Amy says
Sorry
In one of curran pov snippet where curran had to track down the murderer of Boris bear – the reason why he was not able to attend THE Naked Dinner. He had to go in to suburbs. And he had a bad impressoon about cookie cutter houses in the area as it is very easy to know the layout of any house in the area by breaking in to one. But in the eighth book its mentioned that the houses in that lane are all the same. Where barabas, derek and george and curran lives in similar houses. Did Curran get over his aversion towards cookie cutter houses?
Will Naeemah reappear in last book or Hugh’s book?
Carol says
Hi Amy. I’m just a fellow reader and I very much love the Kate Daniel’s series. I have a thought for you on your question three. When Ghastek first meets Christopher during the rescue mission they are both not what they normally are. Ghastek is half dead literally and Christopher is still very, very broken. When Christopher goes with Kate to win Ghastek and the vamps over, Chris presents himself as a well groomed, educated, highly sophisticated man. He also speaks to Ghastek as a familiar – by his given name. Ghastek didn’t believe him at first. Even then he had trouble recognizing and then believing what he was hearing.
Another thought I have on your last question is that Curran still doesn’t really get along with the suburb lifestyle. But the 300 acre forest helps and he totally loves Kate and Julie so he will make that choice to live there for them and their new life.
You write and speak English as a third language amazingly well by the way.
Amy says
Hi Carol,
Thanks for the compliment. You are very kind ?.
In the nineth book Ghastek identifies Christopher in the first glance itself, and accuses Kate that she brought Saiman as Christopher to trick him. Then only Christopher speaks.
Maybe its because of the clothes and attitude that Ghastek didnt identify Christopher in the seventh book.
Carol says
Yep plus what Ilona says. ?
Ilona says
1. In the third book there was mention of Derek and Curran being in the loup cage. My question is why they were not able to break the bars of the loup cage. They were fully clothed. They could have ripped some of their clothes and use it as a bandage or something
It burns them even through clothes.
2. In eighth book there was a scene where kate discovers barabas and christopher had been living next to her. And Derek comes in asking for duct tape. And he was busted. Derek is a wolf. He can smell people. Why was he not able to identify that kate was inside Barabas’s house
Kate’s scent is all over the street because she walked back and forth and lives there.
3. In the nineth book Ghastek addresses Christopher as he had never seen Christopher before. But in the seventh book Christopher was in the rescue team. Why didnt he identify Christopher then
Because Ghastek was starving and hallucinating and dying. Kate barely remembers anything in Mishmar. Ghastek was concentrating on trying to survive. He wasn’t paying attention to a weird guy, swaddled in robes, filthy, and mumbling to himself.
4. In the nineth book why didnt Roland bring out his priced blood weapons. Scarlet star and Scourge that we know of. That kind of swords could have decimated the shapwshifter in to a quarter. Kate had to impale herself in that sword to control it.
Go back to Magic Strikes and reread the final scene. It tells you what happened to the Scarlet Star. As to Scourge, I’m sure he broke it. The blood weapons are short-lived.
5. Is Julies magic as old as Kate’s magic. As she is a Koorghan
Answered in Magic Binds.
No. That’s not the way Kate grants immortality. This has been explained over the course of the series several times. If Kate cares about you, if she thinks you are a friend and your life is important to her, her magic will keep you alive for a long time.
Liz F says
Isn’t that referenced in M. Breaks when Kate and Jim were discussing how Nick Feldman was related to Greg? Jim says something like, well Greg was only 40 when he died and Kate replied, Greg looked 40 when Voron died and stopped aging after that.
Sherre says
Okay so this question is sorta out of the norm, but at the beginning of the series, if Kate was on her monthly, what did she do to protect herself since she was hiding her blood all the time?
Jean Scanlin says
Good question I also wondered about that .
Mimi says
Me too!!
Simone says
There were several references to her keeping track of bloody bandages etc and burning them. I would imagine she kept her sanitary supplies and burned them later.
Carol says
Also, professional and semiprofessional female athletes and even very competitive female soldiers loose their periods due to the reduced body fat and extreme training.
Course it could be magically tended too. Haha
Ilona says
his is the part where the reader is expected to use their imagination. 🙂 We also don’t typically describe Kate going to the bathroom, for example, unless it’s really relevant to the scene.
Larissa says
One more question: in my head I’m also confusing Sean’s name and Derek’s even though I have re-read both Kate and the Innkeeper. Have you ever stopped to think abt how similar their characters are? They both were cocky and funny guys *werewolves* who went through a VERY difficult experience and turned into the quiet, intense, dangerous wolf later.
To me they are like the same person, only worlds apart. 🙂
Verslint says
I can’t see it. Sorry.
I’ve always seen the two as vastly different. Sure, you have the rigid shapeshifter control likenesses but that’s about all I can find.
Derek – kid trying to emulate older brother/father figure (Curran), with a difficult past and a difficult future. Him being cocky and funny are covers for his insecurity.
Sean – very much a man, with a solid upbringing. Comfortable in his own skin and confident in his own skills, but looking for his place in the world (and later universe).
Both traumatized yes, but one by a near death experience that scarred him physically and mentally, the other scarred by a brutal war he couldn’t escape ethically. Even the way they react to their traumas are different; the way Derek pulls away from Julie (with feelings of inadequacy?), and the way Sean can’t seem to help gravitating towards Dina.
I tried, but I really don’t see it, sorry….
Ilona says
They literally have nothing in common except for being male, having brown hair, and being werewolves. Can’t help you there, sorry. 🙂
Monica says
So sorry you are that unwell big virtual hug from Western Australia
Frances says
And from the other side of Australia Brisbane, south east Queensland.
Ilona says
Thank you!
Maria C says
Hey Ilona, hope you feel better soon!
One of my favorite things about the Kate Daniels series is the detailed cultural background and mythology of all magic creatures and assorted bad guys/gods/magic bits that go with them. I especially love the fact that Kate has a Russian upbringing and that there are quite a few Eastern European folklore references in the books.
Really enjoyed reading references to Prislop pass and the Carpathian mountains in Magic Rises (I’m Romanian) and the hilarious “Viking club” (been living in Norway for the past few years).
My questions is: do you plan on using Europe as a setting for any future books?
Samantha says
Hmmm, anyone else smell a research trip coming?
Maria C says
That would be awesome! I volunteer as a guide.
P.S. I promise I am not a deranged, obsessed fangirl that will chain the Ilona and Grodon in my creepy dungeon and make them write books 24/7. Really. Promise 🙂
Ilona says
No. We would have to physically go to Europe to do research and that’s not really on the table right now. 🙁 I’m very familiar with the eastern side of Black Sea, which is why we used it for Magic Rises, but neither of us has ever been on the Western side or in the Balkans. We do want to go!
Maria C says
Heh. I do get that.
Would be amazing if you do ever plan on coming to Europe. I promise you have a lot of very devoted fans across the ocean as well 😉
P.S. Our vampire community is very polite, fangs tucked in and all.
Siobhan says
Swing by Vienna, and I guarantee you fans as well.
Mina says
And Germany! Don’t forget us Germans! Lots of fans here, too 🙂
Gaelle says
Bonjour from Paris France!
My question is quite simple, I’m reading about these Kinsman novels in the questions above, but the only one I could find to read on Amazon was Silver Shark which is a novella. Can anybody tell me where I can find the others and their titles? It will help with my “Ilona Andrews cravings” until Kate 10 comes out.
I have also read here that Music helps you write and that you like game or soundtrack music. So here are a few links for you to discover from Yoko Kanno, my favorite composer as well as some links to some other music pieces that I hope will give you inspiration.

The title of the other Kinsman tale is Silent Blade, a short story. I purchased the kindle edition several years ago. It appears to no longer be available on amazon here(USA). The novella, Silver Shark, is fun.
Gaelle says
Thank you so much for the title!
Cheers!

FBR says
The first Kinsmen is called Silent Blade. There is a post about it here https://ilona-andrews.com/where-is-silent-blade/ (I hope I did that correctly). Pretty much it’s on hold until they re-release it. You might like ‘Of Swine and Roses’. It’s a short story by Ilona Andrews that reminds me of Kinsmen and Hidden Legacy, although it clearly takes place in a different universe. It’s short but enjoyable.
Gaelle says
Many thanks! The link worked perfectly! I’ve read of swine and roses and liked it very much. It does feeel like a prequel story to the hidden Legacy universe.
I’ve read every Ilona ANdrews book available for purchase in the last 6 months, since I discovered them with the Kate series.

Hello. I would like to know if there is going to be long forgotten, but promised Rogan’s POV n. 2. I know everyone is into Inkeeper 4 (and I am too), but I really enjoy Hidden Legacy stories.
Pazalsta.
Frances says
Yes please Gordon . Rogan POV part 2 please . The male POV adds to the fun.
Ilona says
He will get to it when he gets to it. 🙂
Aimee says
Hope you feel better soon and can enjoy your family and the new house. Don’t try to push yourself too hard.
Get enough rest!
Michael says
I’m in total agreement. Take it as easy as you can get yourself well. As much as I want some further updates from you both your health is important. (OK semi-selfish as I want you well enough to write loads of new stuff). Get well soon 🙂
Ilona says
Thank you!
Amanda says
I had asked on the last thread if we were ever going to get Rogan’s POV Part 2 from Wildfire. I also want to see Penelope take away Grandma Frida’s blowtorch. I always love seeing other POVs from first person novel characters. I’d love to know what Sean, Arland, Maud, etc. are thinking as well, that’s the drawback to first person.
Ilona says
It is answered a number of times in the other comments. 🙂
rampantreader says
1. will conlan have his own series?
2. will we ever get to read the original kate 10 before you overhauled it to kate 10 2.0?
Ilona says
No to both.
Nibha Rajpal says
A Conlan storyline….Pretty Please !!!
Nancyc says
Will there be more about Naeemah and or the reptile shape shifters in Kate10 or Hugh’s book? Would like to know more about them and haven’t seen Naeemah since Magic Breaks. I hope I didn’t miss something.
Ilona says
No.
DorothyB says
Hi, thank you so much for taking the time to comment. I too am terribly fond of Naeema, who carries out her [coerced] bodyguard assignment from Hugh faithfully, sitting in the snow on the Atlanta sidewalk, not going numb, and gives Kate the cold (-blooded) honesty and perspective she needs at the Keep when she needs it. Then apparently, Hugh punishes her for some infraction by locking her up in Mishmar (not clear why). Enthusiastic about her as I am, and even though our plus-size Labrador often reminds me of the giant alligator in the Everglades who stars in a video on YouTube, I am not too interested in spending more time with reptiles or reptile shape shifters. So: thanks for Naeema, she is just enough.
Laura says
I would really like another Kinsman novel. Any chance of that?
Ilona says
Yes.

YAY! I loved the Kinsmen world, part of the Hidden Legacy appeal was that it reminded me a lot of that. 🙂

1. Since this will be the last book in the Kate Daniels series, are you planing on starting a new series?
2. Have you considered adding a page to your website about new releases, other works in progress, ideas about new books?
3. Will there be any more books set in the Hidden Legacy world?
4. Do you plan on writing a book about George and Sophie, maybe a short story part of the Innkeeper Chronicles or maybe start a new series about the Arbitrators?
5. Hugh gets his book, but what about Derek, Julie, Ghastek, Rowena, Nick, Roman, Desandra?
I’ll stop at 5 questions but I want to thank you both for the amazing books that you have written. ??❤️
Tina in NJ says
Derek and Julie were featured in Magic Stars. It advanced both characters a bit.
Ella says
I know, that’s why I want more. Magic Stars was great, but oh so short …
Karen says
They’ve said a couple of times they want to do a book (and at one point they said a trilogy) on Roman. I love Roman so much I’ve been excited ever since 😉 The last I knew they were in negotiations about more Hidden Legacy world books – something else I’m really excited about!
Mirela says
Seriously? I must have missed it. I would love a trilogy with Roman as a main character. If they really plan on writing this trilogy … that’s about the best news I’ve heard today. ?
Ilona says
1. Since this will be the last book in the Kate Daniels series, are you planing on starting a new series?
No.
2. Have you considered adding a page to your website about new releases, other works in progress, ideas about new books?
The Release Schedule is cleverly hidden in the top menu under Books. The New Releases are always on the front page. Ideas are dime a dozen and don’t matter until they become books.
3. Will there be any more books set in the Hidden Legacy world?
We are in talks with Avon.
4. Do you plan on writing a book about George and Sophie, maybe a short story part of the Innkeeper Chronicles or maybe start a new series about the Arbitrators?
No.
5. Hugh gets his book, but what about Derek, Julie, Ghastek, Rowena, Nick, Roman, Desandra?
No.

OM Goodness!..Just read about Gerard deMille and Helen…wow..is this a book/novella that I can buy or a blog story that I can get an update on every week?
Carol says
I know! I thought the same thing when I read it! I was like Noooo don’t stop now! LOL That’d be a great story to read.
Frances says
I keep hoping the Ilona Andrews writing team takes the Gerard Helen snippet and expands it into at least a novella.
Ilona says
No. I need a stamp that says No. 🙂
Tink says
You could always change your avatar image to be holding a little sign that says No.
Carol says
LOL!!

Hi,
I hope you are feeling better! I wanted to ask about the Hidden Legacy series. (I LOVE THIS SERIES!) I wanted to know if you are planning on continuing with this “world” maybe with the sisters or even Nevada after her grace period is over? I really do hope you continue with this work since its my favorite!
Ilona says
We are in talks with Avon.
Kelly says
You need a stamp for this too. ( ;
Coop says
Thanks for the opportunity to ask some questions directly!! I’ve sometimes daydreamed about the chance to encounter you a meet & greet or a convention and what would I ask if I had the chance! So here goes…
You have produced stories in multiple ways (publishing, self-publishing, on-line, ect), and it appears this has evolved as your popularity has grown. Do you see a trend for yourselves and the industry in general for how materials will be sold and distributed?
Do you have a “pending” list of characters and story ideas you want to get to? With so many memorable characters from your different series it seems like you have innumerable directions you could go from here!
Thanks again for sharing your stories with us! You bring alot of joy to the world!
Carol says
Oh my goodness! I really agree with that! Lots of joy and very memorable characters! Thanks from me too!
Ilona says

Yes. A lot more people are going hybrid route. We are hampered by two things: lack of qualified freelance editors and cost of print-on-demand books. If we could solve these two problems, there would be a lot more quality books out there.
Do you have a “pending” list of characters and story ideas you want to get to? With so many memorable characters from your different series it seems like you have innumerable directions you could go from here!
Not really. We usually have an annual strategy meeting with our agent to figure out what we need to get out that year. Any new ideas are thrown around then. 🙂
Kathrine says
Glad you are feeling better. I might be posting this too late, but…
Do you have any advice for people looking to become excellent freelance editors?
Ilona says
Start with beta reading. 🙂 Don’t be afraid to offer your opinion, but make sure that a correction is actually needed and you’re not correcting author’s story to make it your own or destroying their style.
Amy Ann says
Bingo! This can be difficult to do. I keep thinking I want to try beta reading. I have worked with authors before but not on the creative side and I miss it.
Nibha Rajpal says
Miss Andrews, I would really appreciate the opportunity to beta read..i have applied with you for the past few years, but it doesn’t pan…plz do consider this time!
DorothyB says
I think both Avon’s and the Kate Series editors have been excellent.
Rogina says
Does Kate 10 mean there’s no more chance of us ever reading a Barabas-Christopher or Robert-Thomas Lonesco spinoff?
Also, are you going to continue Derek’s Lone Wolf series?
Jan_NL says
Ilona has stated several time that they hope / plan to publish more stories in the KD world. In this Q+A session, she said that a book featuring Roman will likely be next.
Re: Barabas and Christopher, I too would love to read a novel — even a novella — featuring them but she previously said that theirs is a complicated relationship (which is why it interests me) and they will wait until they are inspired to write an interesting story about them. If you search this site, you’ll probably find the answer she provided before — it was really good, almost like a snippet itself 🙂
Oshi says
God that’s what makes them so fascinating. I love Ilona’s response as well to the question. It was disappointing but made perfect sense. I was grateful for the respect she showed the characters.
Ilona says
No. 🙂
Elena says
Since we discovered that Kalina brainwashed Voron and wasn’t really interested in Kate’s wellbeing, I wondered: were Kate’s memories of him buying her green sweaters because it was her favourite color, or taking her to swim because she liked it, an illusion, something she convinced herself of because she was a child needing affection?
Or he really cared a bit?
Thank you for always interacting with us, even in bad times. ♥
Susan says
I think that “pretending to be a parent” morphed into being a parent.
Ilona says
That’s kind of for you to decide. 🙂
Jaxxon says
I think that Voron cared for Kate. There are parents who push their kids to be sport stars or beauty pageant stars. That doesn’t mean that they don’t care for their children or would hesitate to show any kindness, just that–for some–their motivations may fulfill some personal need.
Shannon says
I think Voron was in conflict. Voron probably did care for Kate, but he was what he was. He was an old warlord whose brain was magic-fried so that he’d leave a very strong binding to Roland. His revenge plans against Roland ending up taking away Kate’s childhood. I’m happy that she didn’t let it take away her future. ☺️
Daliya Varghese says
I love all your books…Will you continue the Connor POV series..?? Please do… Are you planning any more Innkeeper Chronicles books focusing on Dina and Sean and will George and Lark have a book of their own…? Will we be seeing Jack as the hero of a boook..??
Ilona says
1) Yes.
2) Yes and possibly but not in the near future.
3) Umm, not sure.
Jan says
Will you ever republish Silent Blade? I would love to get a copy of it.
Jan says
Sorry. Reread blog and found answer. Thank you.
Ilona says
Yus.
Solracmar says
I hope you get better soon.
In the last innkeeper book we know that Arland fell in love with Maud and proposed to her. Now we even know her answer word by word, as of last inkeeper chapter.
Well we know what happened but you never wrote it from Arland pv and he never talked about what made him fall for Maud . Any plan to do either in this inkeeper novel?
Bart Sears says
Arland’s speech to Maud on page 301 of One Feel Sweep, that starts with “I’m no poet.” does a good job of giving his pov on why he fell in love with Maud.
Solracmar says
Yes he declared his love but there is a lot of events in One fell Sweep that he know happened but weren’t developed.
Since the focus was in Dina and Sean that was unavoidable but now it is Maud and Arland book.
So maybe a better way to ask is ….
What happened between Maud and Arland in One fell Sweep and was only mentioned like the gifted sword or any other events between them will appear in the new book? Maybe with Arland or Maud talking about it.
Ilona says
I am not sure what you are wanting here. He tells her exactly why he fell for her. You know why he fell for her – because she is magnificent. 🙂
Solracmar says
Well thanks for the answer. I guess i wanted One fell Sweep to be bigger with more Maud and Arland .
Impossible i know. Finished book and water under the bridge kind of situation.
So i wanted to know if events of One fell Sweep that weren’t developed of Maud and Arland would appear in the new innkeeper….
Well time will answer that.
Thanks anyway.

Have you thought about Lenora for Bern? I know he has some years to get through, but who says the woman can’t be older? Also love the idea of Catalina and Alessandro, as weii as Augustine and Arabella
Ilona says
No. Lenora is in her mid to late thirties and Bern is barely twenty something.
SS says
Augustine is around Rogan’s age and Arabella is like 15
???
Susan says
One of my favorite side characters is Roman. Love, love him. The hair .., thecstaff … the pajamas … the family life … I cannot get enough. I jumped for joy when he was asked to officiate at the wedding and he was so snarkily happy. You do such a great job in Hidden Legacy in exploring the family characters in the Baylor household. I realize that one of the reasons that their story arc lasted for three books is because we didn’t know if the sisters were really primes and if so, what exactly they could do. However, the characterizations were excellent and I just couldn’t get enough. It seems as though you have a similar opportunity to have a widespread and dynamic family tapestry with Roman’s family, which will also bring in the Russian background that you do so well. Any thoughts of launching a series in that direction?
Verslint says
Happily, one of the earlier comments answered confirmed a possibility of a Roman novella.
Which. I. Am. Ecstatic. About!
He is such an interesting, multilayered character. I fell in love with him when Kate decided to kill him out of principle after he started stroking his goatee in classic evil-overlord fashion.
Oshi says
The beard stroke was when I knew he would be someone of import.
Ilona says
Asked and answered. 🙂

Although I love Cuddles, Grendel is my favorite side kick(possibly because I share my life with standard poodles who are great tricksters). We have seen very little of Grendel in the last 2 books, will he have a more active role? Thanks
Ilona says
“I ran after him, leaping over Julie and almost collided with Curran. Grendel bounced around us, barking up a storm, because my life required a giant hyper poodle right this second. “
Kris says
Hi, thank you for doing this while I’ll!
I am currently re reading all the Kate books and something about Julie‘s time living on the streets bugs me. How long did she actually live on the street? Because Julie herself said 1 year, Kate says 2 years. But Julie‘s mum wasn’t dead for that long before the flare in Kate 2, was she? Or was Julie living on the street partially because her mum had an alcohol problem?
Kris says
* while ill
Ilona says
It is explained in Magic Burns, but basically Julie’s mom checked out on being a mom after her husband died. Grief sometimes does that to people. Julie was left to her own devices, so she was basically a street kid for awhile.
Lynne says
I love rereading your books! I’m not sure if anyone has asked this before, but what was Roland doing during the Flare (book 2) that the Order was so concerned about (since the knights and MSDU weren’t available to assist against the Fomorians)?
Thank you!!
R Coots says
This is a thing I have wondered too!
Verslint says
Wasn’t he trying to erect a tower somewhere? I can’t remember…
Which naturally means all KD books must be re-read immediately! (^^,)
Ilona says
Wouldn’t you like to know? 😉
Carol says
LMAO!
Krystle says
What is your writing process and how do you split the work? I’ve always wondered how two authors wrote together.
sarafina says
She has answered this many, many times in interviews.
Ilona says
What she said.
Joanne says
Could you post a snippet of something that you wrote when you were sick? I’m now dying to find out how a story written by a really high Ilona read like!!
Joy Powell says
Ohh that also had me wondering! I am glad I wasn’t the only one.
Joanne says
Me too! I thought it was hilarious and wanted to see how it looked like!
Ilona says
No!
Jenette says
I’ve lost track of all the questions so my apologies if this is a repeat. If Kate needed a magic boost during Tech, what would happen if she absorbed power from Unicorn Lane?
Ilona says
She can’t really do that, because that would make her an abomination. 🙂 Erra was very clear on that in Magic Binds.
Aggiereader says
In the Hidden Legacy books, we are repeatedly informed about the importance of Houses having “an heir and a spare.” House Rogan is a known powerful House, and sounds like it has been for generations, yet it appears Rogan is an only child. Is he an only child, and if so, why?
Thank you!!!
Ilona says
Going to have to read the next book to find out.
Barbara says
“Find out in the next book” sounds promising!
Aggiereader says
I am a 31 woman. And I just screeched like a 5 year old at Christmas, while reading your response. I cannot wait for more Rogan! Thank you!!
Oshi says
I’m a 30 year old man and I did the same thing! YAY!
Nan says
I cackled like a [FIT AN APPROPRIATE AGE] when I read this thread! Lol. The readers’ comments are great.

Omg omg omg yay!!!!!!

Same. yay Rogan !
UlrikeDG says
What is your favorite tea? Coffee? Other hot beverage?
Ilona says
English Breakfast.
Ginni Carter says
How civilized! Milk or lemon?
Judy says
You might want to try the Tetley version of it if you get a chance. 🙂
Carol says
Hi! I love what you two write and I feel much love that you two write together.
I am curious if either of you have a favorite series or character?
Thanks for all your hard work!!!!!
Ilona says
Our favorite characters are the ones we are working on right this second. So if we are working on KD, it’s Kate and Curran.
Sara says
In SIP, how was George, Sophie, and Jack able to use their magic? Technically, they were in the broken and I thought maybe because Gertrude Hunt was magic but Jack was able to be in his Lynx form when he was distracting the police off of the inn’s grounds. Thanks!
Maria says
I don’t think Innkeeper world is the broken. Isn’t it an alternate Earth/reality/ dimension or something?
Maria says
I mean another one, different from the three in the Edge universe.
Ilona says
Different Earth. This is explained in text. 🙂
R Coots says
This may have been asked already. Are we going to get more Derek stories in the future? Derek is awesome. I love the novella we already got for him, but it would be great to see how he goes on once Kate and Curren have their last hurrah. (Also, Dali and Jim, because yay Dali!)
R Coots says
Also, will we ever see more of George and his family in future books?
sarafina says
Already asked and answered.
Sleepy says
Will there be another julie and derek novella??? 🙂
sarafina says
Already asked and answered.
Whitney says
Gah! I really wanted to as you a question but it seems like any question I had has already been answered (sometimes more than once 😉
So I’ll just take this time to thank you for all that you do and if you ever feel overwhelmed or like it just isn’t worth it anymore please know that your work does make a difference in people lives.
It may seem trivial that a book (or books) can have that much effect (or affect-always get the two confused) on someone’s life but they do.
When my life feels out of control I re-read Kate Dainels- you can hit her and hit her but she never goes down and comes out stronger for it.
When my job just plan sucks I find myself re-reading the Innkeeper Chronicles- at least I never have to worry about magical talking birds trying to kill me and everything I love.
And when I just don’t want to deal I can go to your blog and I know I’ll either get a sneak peak at one of your new books or come away laughing at the silliness you find yourselves in.
So yeah thank you for all the voodoo that you do and know that with all the trivialness that comes with life-the sicknesses, the unmade deadlines ,and the quote un quote acts of God, we love you and want the best for you and will be there for you, with you, throughout it all.
Cecelia says
What she said, much better than I could say it. Thank you!

Hi, I hope you are feeling better. I just wanted to drop a quick note to say thanks for sharing your stories with us. Lol, and my husband thinks a tiny Officer Marais POV could be hilarious, especially if there were a fart gun….
AnnB says
Lol, and my husband thinks a tiny Officer Marais POV could be hilarious, especially if there were a fart gun….
Personally, I would pay good money to read about Sean and Marais’ off-screen trip together at the end of OFS:
“A hole opened, and Sean walked out, dragging the third Archivarian out. Marais followed, his clothes covered in soot, his hair wet with slime, his eyes far away, lost in a thousand-yard stare.”
All we got was a two-sentence teaser, yet it still painted a vivid picture of a buddy-cop/werewolf excellent adventure practically begging to be written. 🙂
Milagros says
Yes!!!
Sweeping Inn, an Officer Marais adventure!!!!
Kristy says
Thank for any respond.
Kristy says
OMG, I am sorry, I accidentally deleted my questions when I posted a comment earlier, so let me try again.
1. Will there be Dina & Sean Innkeeper book in 2018?
2. Will Gertrude Hunt ever get her own little new Innkeeper seed?
3. After Dina connected in the last book with the new little seed and absorbed his energy will Gertrude Hunt felt that new energy and emotions too?
4. We all know Gertrude Hunt is very old Inn, so is there a possibility for two Inns to be connected with portals?
I know the last question is a little bit stupid but, we know Dina had helped out with her Mom and Dads Inn and was magically connected to it too. So, could Dina with magic, emotions somehow make a connection with her parents Inn and that way found them?
Thanks for any replay.
