With 96% of BDH, roughly 4,700 people voting for the photoshoot coverage, we will now share the cool stuff with you. Those of you who do not want to view it, please scroll past this post.
Please remember, everything that happens here is the work in progress. None of this is final, the final images will be composites, clothes etc my be significantly altered, and no comments belittling the physical appearance of the models’ bodies will be tolerated. In other words, the ban hammer shall fall and make a mighty thwack as it lands. 🙂
Here is the behind the scenes video of the photo shoot. Enjoy.
We have more, but let’s do one for now. 🙂

Aarya says
Thank you! Everyone looks gorgeous and I can’t wait to see the final image.
Chris says
Wow! He’s exactly how I thought Hugh would look! I’m not as familiar with Alana. Very, very cool!
❤️❤️
TJG says
I was about to say that he’s a pretty darn good Hugh myself!
Sharon says
me too.
Interesting process – just keep trying shooting options and then see what you get that can be tweaked. Rinse and repeat.
Colleen says
I always love to see these after the cover reveal to compare. Interesting process.
Candice says
This is so cool! Can’t wait to see the finished product!
Patti McGhie says
So interesting to see the fan blowing and the models posing. Love it. Thanks for sharing. Can’t wait to read the book.
L. says
Wow! Thanks for sharing:) I can’t wait to see the final cover. They’re both so good looking!
Liz says
Very interesting!
Diane L says
That looks like a lot of work for all concerned. Looking forward to seeing the finished product AND reading the book!! 😀 Thanks!
Nancy C. says
I need to work out more 🙂 😀 🙂
Natalie says
Do the people, any of them, read the books? Are they given a “cheat sheet” of the characters?
Ilona says
Cheat sheet. 🙂
Natalie says
Can, or should I say would you please show us the cheat sheet? Pretty please with sugar on top?
danielle says
thank you!!! everyone looks amazing and I’m super excited to see the final product! kudos to the models!!
Heather Langston says
Can. Not. Wait. To see it!!! I am SO excited!!
samantha says
Well, that was cool as shit. Can I say shit? The models look amazing; can’t wait to see what that translates to.
KD Edwards says
I can absolutely promise I will not be leaving any comments belittling Hugh’s model’s body. That is a very, very easy promise to make.
No feedback here, other than I really appreciated the vid of what a cover shoot looks like. Pretty awesome. Thanks for sharing. I cannot wait to read. I’ve been a massive, massive fan of this world since the first book.
KathyInAiken says
BDH member here…could we please have some more?
How do they do it? My arms are exhausted when I blow dry and curl my hair. I can’t imagine all that holding and posing for a long period. It makes me appreciate my covers even more. Thank you.
nickole195 says
I agree about the hair drying arm fatigue….
Norbert says
Very interesting! Is “Hugh” holding an antique pistol or a sawed-off shotgun in his left hand? And yes, I know this will be digitally altered, but I assume this might stay a projectile weapon in the finished version.
Kat R says
Holy crap. Is that…is that our Hugh? I’m so giddy to feel like I’ve finally seen his face. Hot damn.
Also, that looks like really hard work. I’ve done some super low-key modeling in the way past, but never anything like that. I had no idea.
Tyler says
Wow! I can’t wait to see the final.
E. says
Very cool, thank you.
Saira says
Thank you so much. I can’t wait to see the end result. They look fantastic 🙂 (and its impressive to see them hold the –
what must be uncomfortable- poses so very well).
Ciastulek says
This looks awesome! ?
Sheryl says
Very cool. I can’t wait to see the end result.
wont says
Very interesting. Not sure why I’m surprised she is blond. I bet they are exhausted when it’s done.
Now that I’ve seen this, I can’t wait to see the final cover. And read the book of course.
I hope this isn’t a forbidden question, is this Hugh book definitely a stand alone? Even with only reading the snippets you’ve shared, I know extending the story would be great.
nickole195 says
I too was surprised she was blond, not sure why?
Marielle says
I can’t see why anyone would complain about any of that ?
Jill says
Somehow I pictured more… ambience. Kudos to the models for getting in character with the (noisy) fan blowing in their faces. And I’m at a loss on how anyone could criticize either of their looks.
tylikcat says
Day-um. I was not without trepidation (mostly because videos take time…) but that was amazing. I am so looking forward to this.
Sarah P says
Your female model/actress is doing an amazing job of physically acting out what a huge act of magic might look like. She is so expressive through the neck a shoulders displaying real and artistic effort. I hope your Hugh’s props are hollow 😉
McMe says
Amazing!
This seriously fuels my anticipation!
I love how she moved her arms and shoulders, because it evoked such power. I hope the final image captures that same strength for her character.
Stephanie Burgis says
So cool! Thanks for sharing this.
Alyssa says
What is my “horde name”?
I always liked “She Who Must Be Obeyed.”. But maybe I need something original. How about “Vengeance of Cats”?
Margaret says
Is that a blunderbuss in your hand or are you just happy to see me!
I crack me up. They are both extremely beautiful and I can’t wait to read the book. Is it “Iron and Magic” or “Blood and Magic”?
Teri says
Interesting to see. Like watching actors working in front of a “blue, or green” screen. Can’t wait to see the finished cover.
Aggiereader says
That was far more involved than I imagined! I thought, okay, couple of college kids, snap a few photos. Blew me out if the water! And I felt really bad for Hughes left arm. By the end I was shouting, “Give his arm a break!!”
Beth says
Agreed, total props to him… My arm hurt just watching.
Rachel says
O.O
Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaang
You are right, they are gorgeous!
That’s crazy awesome!!!! 😀
Amanda says
I know the clothing will change but I am so digging the midriff Hugh’s model is sporting.
Verslint says
I drooled….. I am happily married but damn, I drooled
Lee says
Thank you, that was amazing!
Wendy says
This is so fun to see – thank you for sharing! That does not look like easy work!
Kara says
I must be the only perv who thought the sword was a bit….phallic
Natalie says
You’re not. It was. It is. So many innuendos there. I give the model props for not poking his female partner with either of his swords while balancing on that stuff and being blown by wind and trying to listen to people shouting weird instructions at them.
Amber says
Cool beans! I would want to keep the costume and props… Lol
Colleen Hodge says
Hugh is hot!
Lou says
Looks great. Criticize? What? So when does it come out? I’m lost reading old books for the fourth or fifth time!
Maria says
Wow, just wow. Beautiful.
Ruth says
I loved that “Hugh” is standing on platforms ? I guess that’s how you get the guy to be head & shoulders taller than a female model.
Tasha A says
So cool to see the behind the scenes. Love Hugh’s arms! Very yummy.
Jen says
Ooh!!!! thanks that was awesome to watch.
Ami says
That is way cool. Also way more complicated than I would have imagined. And I’m sure wayyyy more expensive. This is totally fascinating.
Laurence says
What she said. ;o) Wanted to post separately but realised that you said exactly what I was thinking.
RaeofSun says
Wow! Very cool to see behind the scenes of the process, thank you for sharing.
Amanda says
Lord that looks like uncomfortable hard work for both of them – holding those poses with the fan blowing at them full blast.
I agree with the other posters who wanted them to give ‘Hugh’s’ poor arm a rest and add that the out leg/pretend high heel position for the lass looks like she will be left terribly sore by the end of the session.
That was really interesting – thanks for sharing. 😀
C Lee says
Super cool! My arms and legs on their behalf. How can they listen to so many voices suggesting pose changes? Thanks for sharing.
C Lee says
Ache. My arms and legs ache on their behalf.
Sigh…..
Claref says
O! Wow! Thank you so much for sharing and to the gorgeous models and whoever else was involved in this coz dayum, made my night!
Kim S says
I absolutely love this! Thank you so much for sharing!
MaryH says
The wind machine is making me laugh for some reason. But I have to say I feel for the Hugh model having to hold that heavy looking gun in roughly the same position for such a long time. That has got to hurt.
Long story short from what you gave us, the cover is going to be great and very theme appropriate. That was the only complaint I had about the first Hidden Legacy cover, which was pretty but misleading for the story at hand. Though I understand it was a “romance novel” and that is how the industry sets up their book covers.
Dee says
That’s all I could think too! Lucky he’s strong ?
Dawn Sperry says
Me three! It’s not easy.. both are awesome.
Judy says
Wasn’t as weird as the Wildfire cover, it had a male who was only a few inches taller than the female and she wasn’t even a blond.
Talio says
That was really cool! Thank you. Was sorta like an America’s next top model clip. It’s cool to see how they do covers. I didn’t realize it was a specific photo shoot. Thank you!
Natasha says
I always feel bad for folks at shoots, its either a never-ending move in nanometers and make strange poses or don’t move at all until you think your arms are falling off..
Korinne says
Squee!!! I didn’t vote because I was kind of ambivalent (in a good way – happy to see the behind-the-scenes or happy to wait for a big reveal of the finished product) but now I’m so glad you posted this! That looks like a ton of fun and everything looks awesome already! Thank you, I needed this today. <3
Rosalita says
Could not be negative about models!! Both are gorgeous, great cheekbones, beautiful faces, he even looks like I imagined Hugh would appear. Thank you so much Authorlords for the behind the scene peek at the process of cover creation. I had no idea it was so complicated should have realized you would bring the same attention to the covers of your books that you bring to the stories themselves. I read and re-read your books many times just for the sheer joy of the humor, and wry plot twists you incorporate in your books. The occasional sorrow (Brans death Buttercups loss) keep it real as well.
sarafina says
I thought Marigold died but the Giant Mule continues on.
Rosalita says
Your’e right got the wrong flower!
Aalmcmullen says
Very cool! I’ve never seen one in action before.
Whitney says
That is so cool. Had no idea book covers were that involved.
Cristina says
It was fun to watch, thank you! And from your character descriptions I think they nailed the models selection.
Judy says
I feel like a broken record,,,, in a million years I wouldn’t have thought that much effort went in to a cover,, 🙂
I never look at covers, I read the blurbs on the back, or the inside cover.
That was an education, thank you.
Christine says
Wow, just wow! Thanks for sharing?
Tos Al says
Now I want to see footage from all the covers.
Alicia says
Love it!!
Nicholi says
Thank you.
catlover. says
Thanks, that was interesting. I have a sinus infection so I’m home and cannot even enjoy it. Hopefully the antibiotics kick in soon, the whistle in my ear is very annoying. Roll on Friday!
Cerulean says
That’s fascinating! I’ve never seen a cover shoot video before – just still shots. It looks *extremely* difficult! I can’t imagine having to hold poses for that long, or figure out which combination of arm, leg, eye, and head movement works! Kudos to the models and to the artist(s) directing them. I coudln’t do that in a million years.
Tanya says
I can’t even imagine someone having anything negative to say about the process or the models! However, I have discovered that people will complain about the stupidest things! Thanks for sharing! And as always, thanks for being completely Awesome Sauce in every way.
sarafina says
You missed out on the cover comments before Ilona slammed the door on those.
Klio says
Wow this is so interesting! They look awesome! And it’s nice to see behind the scenes! Thanks for sharing ?
Taryn says
Looks great! Looks like the two models work very well together! I’m looking forward to seeing what the finished product looks like. Thanks for sharing 😀
Pklagrange says
Thank you. That was so interesting. I had no idea how a cover is developed. Loved the models.
vinity says
That was very cool.
gingko-girl says
Thanks, it’s so fun to see this.
The whole process looks exhausting for the models!
ReneeG says
This is so cool! The models look fabulous – can’t wait to see the cover!
Kamrin says
That’s awesome! Can’t wait to see how it translates into a book cover
Phyllis says
Occupationally speaking, who are the 2 voices (male and female) that we could hear? I’m guessing one is the photographer but wonder about the other.
KR says
I love it! It really is so difficult. Think of how long they have to keep their arms up like that. Anyone saying something nasty should try it. And he’s holding weapons — probably lightweight props, but still — so the lactic acid burn has got to be tremendous. Frankly, they look like pros and I can’t wait to see the finished product. Thanks for sharing!
Teresa says
What a great Hugh. Wow.
Natalie says
I can’t wait to see the finished product and more of the shoot if you show it. Also am I the only one who would love to see a gag reel of this photo shoot and the models in funny poses?
Patricia Schlorke says
No, you’re not the only one, Natalie. That would be hilarious!
Gail K says
Thanks so much .love the models they are great and she has fabulous legs and Hugh has great biceps. They look great together and it is hard tiring work to stay still in weird poses for a long time
Alisa Hylton says
Uff ! Lovely eye candy.
GailinPgh says
You posted an image of her dress in process, which looked really good. I am more impressed with the final product. The bodice manages to be fluffy and imply armor at the same time. The model looks very badass which adds to the armor illusion. She projected strength and ferocity.
It is unusual for me to say this, but I was so caught up in watching her that I had to run it again for a proper ogle at the male model.
This was fun to see and will be a great cover. Thanks for sharing.
Meryl Markowitz says
Thanks for sharing. Looks like extremely hard work. I don’t envy the models. Will be interesting to see the final image.
Becca says
I was excited before, but I’m even more excited now. Thank you!
Patricia Schlorke says
I can see why you squeed, Ilona. I squeed too, and this is not even the final product. Thank you! 😀
Cheezegrl says
Where is the Hello Kitty tee shirt? Hugh and Rogan likely shop at the same store!
Mmg says
AHHH! That was so freakin’ cool to watch! I always (wrongly) assumed that most of book covers were painted/photoshopped only, and didn’t have any real people in them at all, so that was nice to know 🙂 That was fun, ty for sharing 🙂
Lataisha says
Nice!! Love it.
The fan blowing always reminds me of Mariah Carey everything. Movies, interviews, videos, walking down a insulated hallway, but yet there is someone holding the fan. Lol
CLDaniels says
AWESOME! This cover will be so damn cool! They are both lovely…Elara looks feisty! I especially like Hugh’s model… omg he is such a perfect Hugh! (That jaw certainly looks like it would hurt to punch it… yeowch!)
rampantreader says
hugh’s THAT good looking irl!!!!?!??!? marry meeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!
Sara T says
Very nice! It will be so interesting to compare this to the final cover.
Nalini SIngh had posted a photoshoot from one of her books sometime back. Fun!
Vala says
Very fun! Thanks for letting us see it, the modes are great!
Cessie says
Wow! Lemme add to the horde’s voice in thanking you for the video. If ANTM made modelling look tough, this video gave me calf cramps just looking at her holding the pose for so long. Looking forward to both the book and cover!
Karen Haman says
Thank you for sharing!! That was cool to see. I can’t wait to see the final to see how they take this and make that. Kudos to “Hugh” for holding that gun for so long!
Rachel says
A lovely peek behind the scenes and just a hint of all athe hard work that goes into a cover- thank you!
Love, love, loved ‘Hugh’ and all his muscles and bless the poor chap having to hold the gun for ages, juggle the sword and manage not stab his colleague in the bum or her flowy frock. Both looked like serious deperados.
Now they just need to mess up her outfit a bit. I mean, really, who can wear a white flowy frock to battle and not get bloodstains right down the front and dirt in the hems or is that just me!?
I can’t wait to see the finished version!
Ariel says
So cool! Those models have intense jobs.
LKC says
Very cool – do you get to keep the costumes? Will you and Gordon be wearing them next Halloween?
Sue says
Ooooooh it’s so movie starry. Fun to watch!
april glenn says
that was so cool. Can not wait for the book
Andrea A says
Totally cool. Thanks for sharing. It will be fun to see the final cover after this.
Henry says

Bwa ha ha ha ha ha ha!
RoadRunner says
*Sigh* So much for ‘No SNARK.’
🙂
PyeCat says
Very interesting. Thank you; I was glad to see it.
Tracey says
How fascinating! What a lot of work! So many slightly different poses to choose from…
H Wawrejko says
I love to see this! Thank you.
BevQB says
Goodness, he has a long… Sword. *whistles innocently*
But seriously, thanks for peek under the cover(s).
Verslint says
bwahahahahaha…. oh… wheeze….
*ROFL*
Zaz says
Why would anyone belittle. I’d consider my self darn lucky to have a body like that. You have to work hard to look so good. They really looked great, book modeling seems to require acting as well as modeling skill. Makes sense but it did not occur to me before
Jenn K says
Oh my goodness, thank you for letting see the process! This was so cool to watch!
Jill says
The guy in the photo shoot looks very attractive. The gun looks rather primitive compared to the firearms that Andrea carried. Interesting to see this. Thanks.
Dawn says
How cool was that! Thank you for sharing!!
MeggsH says
Am I the only one who can’t see the video? I’m seeing the last innkeeper post….
MeggsH says
Huh that was weird- found the video after coming at the post from a different direction. When just bringing up the blog and refreshing it though it still comes up as an innkeeper post instead of the video. But that video was fascinating! Always have wondered how covers got made.
Char says
I always have to go out and come back I’m. A simple refresh almost never works. I have a bad electronic aura!
RoadRunner says
It sounds like your browser is using a cached version of the web site. Depending on your browser, there may be a setting you can change to keep it from caching web sites.
Mina says
Total awesomeness. Thank you!!!!!
Beth says
Every time I see video of a photo shoot I’m reminded of how hard it must be. The models are trying their hardest to convey whatever the director(?) calls out while holding a particular position (or facial expression) that might not be particularly comfortable, and also there’s a fan blowing at you and a flash going off over and over. Whew!
Thank you for sharing! This was really interesting. 😀
charites says
Thanks for sharing.
Shannnon from Florida says
I had no idea it was this involved. Thanks for sharing.
LauraR says
This was fascinating. The models must have amazing muscles to be able to hold poses for so long. I’d be whimpering in pain if I had to hold something in my hand with my arm outstretched for so long! Can’t wait to see the final picture once the artist is done. Thank you!
Cheryl says
It looks exhausting!
Sarah says
Thank you for sharing. Hope she gets a weapon or three to go with her armor.
sarafina says
Was this shot in one day or did they have to do more work? (different clothes, weapsons, etc.)
MerryB says
Thank you. Proof positive that modeling in all its aspects, both in front of and behind the camera, is hard work. Neat!
Christina Petty says
4,700 people seem rather small for a horde, especially a book devouring one.
Cecelia says
Yes, but the lurking horde is backing you up!
Sam says
Definitely part of the lurking horde… I was neutral on this subject, so I didn’t vote, but now I appreciate getting to see what happens behind the scenes…
Lauren says
Cool. It’ll be really interesting to see how it morphs to the finished product. Thanks for posting it…
Sarah says
Can’t remember when I last saw black leather look that good! Sir be Hugh-worthy 🙂 Thanks for the sneak peek, can’t wait for the book!!
Carol says
Totally agree!
Eli says
Looks like Hugh has both sword and gun, but i thought having too much personal magic would make guns stop working during flares (like Kate and telephones).
Claire says
But it looks like an older gun so maybe he’s magic won’t affect it as much
Tara says
Remember Hugh uses a gun in book 7 against Double D.
Jana says
Oh my gosh…..I always wondered how book covers were developed!!! That is so kool!! Thank you for a peek behind the magic curtain. The people look awesome!! Tell them thanks too!
Una says
Wow…I can’t imagine how tiring it must be to hold those positions while only making minute adjustments. Wow! Thank you for sharing some behind the scenes info! Hope you are all doing well!!
Mousewynne says
Interesting, almost a slow motion dance.
Tyger says
So cool! Loved the costumes and weapons. My parents ran a modeling agency for awhile, but nothing this involved. Loved seeing everything in process. Thanks for sharing that!
Jessi says
That was amazing. Thank you for this! I’ve always wondered how this works! Quite fascinating, really. Now I know!
Chris says
That poor male model, basically holding one position for minutes at a time. His arm and shoulder muscles must ache by the end of the day. At least the female gets to shift position a bit, although I bet having the one leg propped up on a block like that probably leaves it sore too.
Kudos to cover models everywhere.
Amy says
One of my favorite things about your books: why pick a sword or gun when you can have both?
Tamara says
I never knew what was involved to make a cover. So much work. Thanks for sharing!
ShellyB says
That was fascinating. The model’s looked wonderful. I have no doubt this was all hard work, but they made it look effortless. Looking forward to the final results.
Sharon says
Wow!! They are gorgeous and that was so interesting! I think they are perfect 🙂 Thanks for posting.
Twinklebee says
I was thinking that his arms must have gotten really sore! What great shape they must be in to be able to hold poses that way. Looks great and LOTS of fun! I can’t wait to see the finished cover when it comes out. Thanks for sharing!
SoCoMom says
Yay! That was fun. Very excited for the book and now the cover will seem extra special for the behind-the-scenes peeks!
Addy says
Wow! Those two models were wonderful! So controlled and focused. Keep that team!
Susan says
It’s cool to see how it’s done, thanks
Billie Dee says
Fascinating! Thank you for allowing us to peek in.
Debbie Brown says
Cool Beans, Neeto Burrito!!!
Drew says
I had no idea. That was way cool to see. Thanks for sharing that inside peak.
JenMo says
Neat. Not sure who the lady will represent, but dig the dude as Hugh.
Cowgirl says
The dude is awesome! Not sure about the girl.
Leitiza says
YAZ!!!! CHIIIIIIII!!!!! Like Orphan Oliver with Cap in Hand I aske for More Please!
Lauryn M says
That was fabulous!! Loved the models; both beautiful! That was just as difficult as I imagined; remaining fluid, then still, holding those positions, working to ‘emote’ having that fan on!! Loved the elegant lines of their forms in those costumes and the lighting. What elegant definition and shape she has, amazing lines with her legs, and just so graceful! Gorgeous muscle on him! Loved his presence! Loved the significant difference in height between them, and her look of light to his dark. They whole team on that shoot can be proud of that work!! Just loved the whole dang thing!
Rohaise says
Nifty! Thanks for the peek behind the curtain. A heck of a lot more work than I would have thought. Can’t wait to see the final cover.
Circejane says
This is really nifty! Kudos to the models for holding those poses through all the noise and fans and lights! And that dude representing Hugh…oh my! /fansself
Beth D says
Thanks for the peak into the cover design process!
Michelle says
Thank you for sharing! Takes a lot more energy than I could give. Models work extremely hard.
Fan in California says
WOW!!!! So interesting — thanks for sharing!!!
Dana says
This is a given, but those models are absolutely stunning!
Ramona says
4700 votes!!!! Have you any idea how difficult it is to get people to respond to any kind of survey question? You have mad skills for connecting with your fan base. Congrats. BTW – the models and costumes are great. Can’t wait to read the book.
Pat Sciarini says
Just thank you!
Dori says
Wow, I hope that sawed off shotgun was lighter than it looked-his arm must have been SO TIRED! Kudos to the models!
Hayley says
Haha I was thinking the same
Bill G says
I was thinking that even if it’s styrofoam it’s more than I’d want to hold out like that! LOL He’s got to be holding it out there a lot over the course of the work.
katje says
N-thing the “wow, his arm has gotta be sore” first thought. ^o^ I think I heard somewhere that there’s a “hold a piece of paper up at eye height” challenge somewhere – sounds easy until you try it…
Also – whoa, this is fascinating. Thanks for showing us!
Lallcine says
More than that, imagine having your foot be in the position the female model had it in for hours. That must hurt. Kudos fully given.
Mary Jo says
Yep! I kept thinking… “charlie horse! charlie horse! charlie horse! OWowowowowow!”
jewelwing says
ITA! My first reaction as well.
Caroline says
OMG. I want a job like that. Playing fictional hero dress ups every day would be awesome. I had no idea that was even possible.
Jukebox says
DA-YUM!
Jessica Winn says
They look amazing! I can’t wait to see the final cover! Woot! Very cool to see behind the scenes.
pet says
So cool..
Im glad you shared.
Ellen says
They are really acting/ performing aren’t they ? It is very interesting. I’m looking forward to the cover reveal now ! Thanks for sharing.
Verslint says
Wow, looks like they work hard…. that must be some job satisfaction when the final cover comes out though!
Looks good guys, you are awesome!
Carol says
I thought the models/actors were great. I like seeing the process too. Thanks so much for sharing this very unique look into book covers. I hope the others get released too.
Chachic says
THIS IS AWESOME! Thanks for sharing.?? I love their costumes, and more importantly, he’s wearing a shirt! Seriously can’t wait to see the final cover design.
Tara says
LOL! I was going to make that comment too! No shirtless Rogan problems here 🙂
Angela French says
Super fun background! So glad you shared! It’s nice to put a “face” to the story at hand.
Aeryn says
Wow, looks great. The models really have to work hard dont they.
Susan Linch Ravan says
Well done!
mdy says
That was more interesting than I thought it would be. Thank you for sharing. Also, kudos to whoever positioned the video camera — the angle they chose made me feel like I was right there in the studio watching the goings-on.
Shannon from Texas says
Thank you! I’m fascinated by the work she’s doing just with her head, neck and shoulders. So dramatic! And that she’s so tiny! So very, very cool to see a woman of the same height so many starlets are these days, yet with such beautiful musculature. Strong is beautiful!
(Seriously, with her standing on two apple crates, unless he’s seven feet tall, she can’t be much more than five feet. Yet she looks like she could kick butt any day of the week!)
Mirren says
man hip bones – yum
Joan says
❤??❤
Tania says
The work is very precise isn’t it? I really enjoyed seeing how the photographers directed the models to make very particular movements and the models responded with just the right ones to get the desired outcome. Well done team! Looking forward to seeing the final product.
Nicci @ Sunny Buzzy Books says
Holy beejeebers. I’m now having to readjust my opinion on modeling being not being hard work! I had no idea they had to stand there in a pose making minute changes for that long… It must get tedious!
So excited to see the finished cover and then get my grubby little mitts on the book!
Claudia says
I enjoyed that glimpse behind the scenes! It’s surprisingly noisy and tiring work, but you’d never know it to look at them.
monica martin says
It’s not easy being a model. Can’t imagine having a fan blowing up my hoohah for hours. Holding poses and hopefully that shotgun is light! It’s a hard job and I respect what they all do. Thanks for sharing!
Marianne says
Wow! That was very interesting as well as educational. I, like others who have posted, have a great deal more respect for what those models do now. Holding those poses, while making specific minute changes, for such an extended period of time must be grueling! The male model must have gone home with complete rubber arms after holding up and extended both sword and sawed off shotgun!! Geepers!! Both models had arms up and in poses – no wonder they had muscular arms!! They were also able to be so expressive, with physical movement and position, as well as facial expression. My hat goes off to them. Difficult work indeed, which they handled superbly. They were definitely highly professional. Thank you for sharing. It was interesting, and great to have a more informed view of the process – all achieved through a short video clip!! ?
Jean Morgan says
I so agree! Huge respect for them!
Joan says
Yes totally agree.
Laurie says
OMG. Having made me HATE Hugh, you are now going to enlist me on his side. The cover will be WAY cool.
Angel says
I agree with you! I’m excited to see how the Authorlords convince me to love him ?
That was an interesting video! I’m curious to see the final product.
Joan says
Kate’s dad was/is a god and Hugh followed him – to the ‘darkside’.
I always thought of Hugh as a fallen Angel waiting for Redemption ?
Simone says
Looks great – can’t wait to see the final results. Both models are gorgeous and strong!
Jean Morgan says
WOW! What a tough job those models have, looks like they are doing a great job! Can’t wait to see the final picture(s)!
Jackie H says
Thanks for sharing this! It is so cool to see a cover in the making.
Birgit says
So, he looks just like I pictured Hugh! Good choice of model.
Maria says
I can’t wait to see the final product!
Tara says
Wow. So, I expected to be drooling uncontrollably at Cover-Hugh’s hotness (and he’s hot) but holy crap Cover-Elara has presence! I couldn’t stop watching her. Can’t wait!
Lisa says
Yassssss! Thanks for sharing. Definitely squee worthy.
Melissa says
So much fun to watch!. Like everyone else, much sympathy for how hard this must be. Thanks for sharing!
Bryanna says
This is awesome and they look amazing! And my god that looks like exhausting work!! Holding those positions; constantly being told to change positions and unstanding what positions they are asking for… major kudos to them!!
CallMeKarma says
Hi Guys, need a little help here….in anticipation of Kate 10 and Hugh coming out, I’m re-reading the series but only on second book (Hugh isn’t in the picture yet). So, from previous posts the blonde on the cover is Elara? I’m drawing a blank…help? is she new? or someone I will become re-familiar with?
Paul Davis says
I think Elara is specific to this book.
I could be mistaken. 😉
CallMeKarma says
Thanks for the info….can’t wait ?
Faith says
Cool! Thanks so much for sharing this.
Silverwolf says
Thank you for the preview, I loved it. I knew models had to work really hard, but never thought about it as far as book covers go. Thank you to the models for their hard work, they were and are fantastic. I can’t wait to see the final book cover and what they look like there. If there are more clips I hope you share those too. It’s great to see what kind of work goes into getting the final product and makes one more appreciative of it as well. Again thanks all, great job models you are true artist.
Carolyn Sanders says
Thanks for letting us experience the process. Hugh is one of my fav characters. This is the BEST series I’ve read in many many years (and I’ve got some years on me!). Good work Ilona and Gordon!
Lea Bourg' says
Wow I must admit I never really wondered how the covers were done so I love seeing this !!!
Just one thing : how do they hear the instructions with the noise of the blower fan ??? If it’s me, I would be like “What ??” “What did you say ??” xD
Vindhya says
Now I really want to know who and what is Elara? I remember her in a snippet where Hugh gives her a demonstration of his army, but I don’t think she has been mentioned in the KD universe yet. Has she?
Sarah G says
Thanks so much for sharing the video, it really shows how hard the models worked – they definitely earned their pay! I’m impressed by how long “Hugh” was able to hold his arm straight out like that. I can’t wait to see the final cover 🙂
Signe says
Fascinating! Thank you so very much!
Kate says
I love getting a peak behind the curtain. I know they are probably very sore at the end of the day. Side note, has Hugh’s hair been short for a while and I didn’t notice? Sometimes when I read I get so caught up in the story I miss details.
Chaney says
Hugh is one of my favorites but uhm, who is the girl? She looks cool and fierce!!! Thanks for sharing with us!!
Antonia says
That was my thought as well, who is the girl? I have one guess but I don’t remember how she looked…
Jo Jones says
How interesting. Not as simple as I thought
mbrazen says
That photo shoot is full proof that models do indeed work hard. Holding those positions (esp. the guy with the gun outstretched) HAS to be exhausting….GO GO Photo shoot….and Thank you so much for letting us see it!
Prospero says
Looks great. All hail the ban hammer.?
Alice says
The models look great! This is going to be an epic cover.
Joylyn says
OMG! That was so cool to see! Thank you for sharing!
Now I understand how a photo shoot could be so tiring!
Antonia says
Wow! The models looked fantastic and so professional! To hold that pose with the shotgun and not tire…
Shadowspun says
Great video of the photo shoot – can’t wait to see the actual cover – it is going to be great. As for the models – they did great/wonderful/fantastic/marvelous work – and all while looking sooooo good.
Gloria Magid says
This was fascinating! Loved both models, and am amazed at the number of minute changes they had to make. Thinking that the selection for what actually appears on the cover must be very difficult. Thanks so much for sharing.
Dianne Harmon says
What a great look behind the scene. Thank you for sharing. The models certainly looked good.
Diana R. says
Thank you so much for a peek into this process. Fascinating! Looking forward to more.
Elizabeth Lyn Barbee says
Cool. Thanks.
Lisa says
I only have one comment about the models. How awesome to be able to hold those poses and have the strength to hold out weapons and not drop your arms or have your leg and foot in such a position and be able to hold it. I think this was really cool and interesting. It makes you realize that it can’t be easy to be a model.
Nina says
Totally! I would feel silly after two seconds and would never ever be able to act (using both my face and my body) for so long, especially not with fans blowing in my face and heavy weapons everywhere. And these aren’t super famous models (I assume). They’re average professionals like you and me and they do this job even knowing that as they get older, jobs will probably get less. Maybe it’s a side career for them? Who knows. Point is, that’s a lot of dedication and talent to bring to the table.
Sophia says
Awesome
Jan says
Thank you for sharing. The models are very cool.
Artstuff2 says
WOW I love it!!!
RowanCavadora says
My arms are aching just watching that. To hold an extended-limb pose, continuously flexing for proper muscle definition, and then add in the weight of props and the pinch of costume pieces and shoes… Kudos to the models. Very professional and interesting view behind the scenes. Thanks for sharing!
Pat says
That was my first thought too; ow.
Miriam says
I had the same thought. Plus, I’d be constantly confused about which arm or leg I was supposed to move in which direction – Oh, you meant this hand? I should look to my other right?
That wind machine blowing could be make things really cold (or be a relief from hot lights), and surely it blows hair into eyes and mouths….The models are impressively professional. Thank you for sharing this with us!
Joan says
Yes thank you for sharing ?
And Hugh is exactly how I imagined him – HOT???
Rebecca says
I agree. Exactly how I pictured Hugh. Yummy, yummy, yummy!
Nina says
Hehe, I wouldn’t be getting an enthusiastic “YES” after each instruction. It’d be more like “No! The other arm! I said higher! Higher! Can’t you hear me?!”
AnthyGreen says
This was really cool, thanks for sharing! I had no idea real people modelled for the covers! Very cool to get a sneak peek behind the curtain.
toni says
oooh, hella gorgeous. As a photographer, I can tell you’re going to have something really phenomenal out of this.
Caro says
Thank you for sharing this, it is really amazing to get a look behind the scenes – I had no idea there was an actual photo shoot for covers. And it looks like really hard work, to hold these kind of poses and make it look easy is impressive. At least in this case the models can rest assured that many people are going to love the final cover that they made possible. Really looking forward to the book!
Debi Majo says
They are beautiful!!! He’s just hot!!! Is that her real hair? If not, it’s awesome!!! Thank you!!!
Jan D. says
They Rock! Who in god’s name would disparage those bodies! We the rabble are in awe. Thanks for posting.
Joan says
???❤
PamFan says
That is really cool! To see the costumes thought out and how to make it look active is fascinating. How does one even get into this kind of business?
Darlene Claus says
Thank you. I had no idea. You and Gordon are so good to us . Thank you again.
RoadRunner says
Fantastic! That guy has some awesome arm strength to keep that weapon out at full extension. Of course, my first thought was, “Is that a sword in your hand, or are you just happy to see me?”
(I will now hide under my desk in shame…) 😉

Roadrunner, your post just made my day! Hilarious! Laughing with tears!!!
oktober says
that’s how a book cover is made?
i just figured the publisher sent a tatty manuscript to some artist’s mailbox to be read and distilled into an several images…
and then, i imagined the artist coming in and pulling the paintings out of a big black case to be viewed by the publisher, one at a time, as the publisher says “no… no… no… that one”.
photography never really entered my mind, at all … 🙂
Solracmar says
It made me more curious about the finished cover.
NWong says
That was awesome. Thank you so much.
Jennifer says
Definite possibilities ?. They are so much more athletic than me?
Sage says
Never seen a photo shoot before. I was surprised how noisy it was. Looks good tho!
Amy Y says
WOW the models are great. I agree with the others the poses have to be very hard to maintain the models are doing an amazing job.
MarS says
That poor guy having to hold his arm that way with the ax or sword that way. got punished by my dad one time had to hold a rifle on the back of my hands for an hour. Mine was punishment, but he was doing his voluntary . it was cool to see what goes on behind the covers
Brad says
Hmm they appeared more “Alliance” then for the “Horde”. Yes bad pun intended to World of Warcraft.
Aarya Marsden says
Looks so cool! Can’t wait for the final product!

I think the article is wrong. Amazon says 3/6/2018. Same day as Patricia Briggs’ new book! Which I am trying to wait for patiently
Muddy Mindy says
Why do I love the fan. I love the fan. I’m a fan of the fan. That would never have worked without the fan!
Rosalita says
The fan?
MaryF says
I think she means the fan blowing the air on the models to make her hair and dress wave about? I agree, the fan adds tons. Also, this is just how I imagined Hugh.
Kaylene McCormack says
I’m awestruck! Beauty in every move and flex, you’ve got to admire the dedication of all involved. Thank you for opening my eyes.
MaggieD says
Love it. Interesting to see how they go about it!
Lynsey says
Thanks for sharing that – it’s so interesting! Kudos to the models to hold those poses for long periods of time. The cover is clearly going to be EPIC!! ??
Gaelle says
I love behind the scenes stuff! I find is as magical, if not more, than the end result!
Thank you so much for sharing!
Andri/Kaylenn says
Wow, you never consider how much goes into covers like this! They both look amazing and the being able to work through that means they have a crapton of stamina, too. While watching, I was seeing in my mind the possible changes being made by a graphic artist, like spell effects around her hands, etc.
I hope you would be okay sharing that process, because I think it would be very educational! The finished product should be great! =)
Joan says
Yes please
Sherre says
This is so cool! I never thought of how much work went into some of these poses! It’s got to be hard work, and I can only imagine the cramp she will have in her leg after flexing for so long! Awesome job by the models. Can’t wait to see the final product and outfits and weapons and stuff!
Cynara says
Two observations jump out: Comment the First: his left arm has to be very tired. Comment the Second: her left leg has to be freezing.
Please tell your models “thank you” for working to make a lovely book cover. I know modeling is considerably more difficult than having a picture snapped, and we appreciate it. -C.
Julian says
Wow! Those models are super awesome! I know I don’t want to do that, and they make it look relatively easy. Kudos to everyone!
Andrea Smith says
So interesting! The fan makes me want a cape. ?
Marnie says
Fascinating to watch those, and I agree kudos to the models for their stamina. I did picture Hugh with longer hair and a bit older.
Valentina says
Wow. Love it. They both so good at what they do! Thank you authorlords!
wiedźma_florentyna says
I had a classmate who could take a photos like You couldn’t believe – like honestly I was looking at him taking pics and than at the photo and I couldn’t wrap my mind around the fact that it’s the same scene – catching a good frame is a kind of magic (+ there is also an edition) so I can’t wait to see the result.
And I can’t help myself (please don’t ban me for it). Is her hair color natural, bleached, a wig? I can’t tell and it’s going to bother me. I’m curious, how does one achieve such hair color?
Danielle says
I couldn’t even imagine trying to do that for a whole day!
Liz says
Very cool, thanks for sharing! They both look dead on to me, can’t wait for the book!
Susan says
Truly amazing. I really enjoyed the behind the scenes glimpse. For some reason, it was especially cool to see the blocks used to get the foot positions/stances just right. And, yes, they’re both inhumanly attractive. Thanks for sharing!
S A says
I love the behind the scenes look. The models are amazing. The Power and Confidence that you can feel from the poses is sooo cool. Thank you so much for sharing!
