From Ingrid in the comments:
I recently ran the character descriptions for the innkeeper chronicles through an Ai – though it might be fun to share š Link to the post.

Okay then.
These images are for entertainment purposes only. As beautiful as they are, until we have some sort of legal clarification regarding copyright issues with AI, they cannot be used for commercial purposes.
Edited to clarify: There are two factors here. First, AI is “trained” on art without creators’ consent and we all know that AI can’t be “inspired”; it can only trace pardon me, synthesize images from the cloud of noise that sometimes somehow end up looking exactly like poor copies of the original artwork. Second, we lose the vision of human illustrator. A human artist filters text description through the prism of their own creativity. The AI either mimics the existing artists or ends up churning out images that mostly look the same. But is this particular Arland gorgeous? Yes, he is.
I tried putting this same prompt through Midjourney and got ridiculous results I’m not even going to share.
These are fun to see and enjoy. Appreciate the contentiousness with copyright issues

Ingrid did a fabulous job. One question. Does lord Soren have horns on his head? Or is my bad eyesight not seeing the picture clearly.
I chose to see it as a device š . Sometimes AI adds random elements.
I was wondering that too. Quite a random element, thanks.
It looks a little like the tip of the sword Arland is holdingā¦
These are really good. I can imagine each of them as they appear in the books.
what AI program did you use
I am always in awe of the artists who illustrate your books. Their work is amazing!! (I can draw one thing: horizontally, it is a fish tank; vertically, it is a paper grocery bag.)
Proud member of AAA: Art Appreciation Audience!
Ah so Iām not alone in this , good to know
I certainly think these were fun. Thank you for sharing them.
My critique:
The AI needs to upgrade its knowledge base regarding armor. Atlandās in particular looks based on Roman armor, which had its limitations unless one was fighting with large shields and shoulder to shoulder in huge formations. For the interested, there is a YouTube video called āThe Knight of Hope,ā created by a troupe of European reenacters who specialize in choreographing realistic Renaissance-era fights with edged weapons. That shows steel armor at its pinnacle of development. Syn-armor doesnāt have to look like that (especially since syn-armor is āso black it swallows lightā while the Knight of Hope wears polished steel), but it makes a good starting point. Not a knock on Ingrid, just a statement about the AIās knowledge base.
I love the face of Soren and Maud, and Arland and Caldenia are as close to perfect as my limited imagination can picture them. I think ā and this is merely my impression ā Sean needs to project greater height, more like 6ā4ā, and broader shoulders. He comes across as very average in height and shoulder width in the AIās depiction.
And the AIās depiction of Dina is way off. I write this because nearly everyone wildly underestimates Dina until she demonstrates her power ā Amphie, Frank Copeland, Donna Marais, Dawn Phillips, Nycati, Resven (initially), is there anyone in Sweep of the Heart who doesnāt underestimate Dina at first? I picture a young woman who initially comes across as innocent and fragile and perhaps a bit shy, until you see her eyes.
It’s also very into period clothing, and by “period” I don’t mean 21st century or even 20th, at least in Earth fashions. However, still fun to see and enjoy.
Those are all really close to how I imagined them. I would love to see the police officer and some of the bad guys, and Arland’s mother.
Sean is giving my Sherlock Home vibes. I agree about his height. For whatever reason, Id compare is body type as Swimmer. Tall, muscled and lean.
Caldenia is the best fit I think.
I wonder how close they are to how others imagine them and how the authors imagine the characters look like.
I liked this article about an artist who uses AI to enhance his own work and go through art to AI to art several rounds :
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-64260739
WOW that is some gorgeous stuff! And the article is good too; thanks for sharing!
Those images are absolutely stunning! Thank you for sharing the link.
I love the light and dreamlike quality to the Inns. The characters look a lot like they do in my head.
I can appreciate the sticky wickets created by AI artwork. While artists use what they have seen and experienced to fuel their art, AI uses others’ works more directly and without permission. It’s a fascinating headache that I am rather glad I won’t be around to see morph in 50+ years.
Cool to look at. Different from what I pictured. Gives me food for thought about how I pictured the innkeeper characters.
That was a fun browse-through, though I couldn’t enjoy Sean’s rendering as much because he resembled a bulked up version of a previous coworker of mine. Too weird, haha! ????
I like to follow a few artists on Instagram, and I’ve seen many have had issues with AI, which I totally get why (all that work being credited to AI and not the artist, it is ethically wrong). But at the same time, it looks fun to do it to picture book characters you can’t seem to picture in your head. If it is just for non-commercial purposes, I would think it is ok to enjoy A. I art.
Is Arland gorgeous? Yes he is. But personally, I am drooling over the images of Gertrude. Even without magic, I would give anything to live there!
These are fun. Thanks for sharing on the blog.
And, Ingrid, thanks for doing this experiment!
Interesting note on copyright…There is apparently a part of the photoshop agreement that you acknowledge your images may be used in AI.
I do use Midjourney and pay extra for commercial use. I also use the Midjourney images as a base, then work with the images in Photoshop. It’s definitely a learning curve!
That’s what I’ve started to do. I start with the image from Midjourney, then throw it into Photoshop and start working with it.
I think that most of the pages where we upload images have some wording in there that allows them to use your data for other things than just hosting the pic. I think the only way we can avoid having our data scraped is by not sharing *anything* on the net.
There are artists who project a photo onto their canvas and paint it to look exactly like the photo, call it art… and not credit the photographer. Copyright has always been an issue.
I think there’s room for all kinds of art across the creative spectrum… and if the creative process gives you pleasure, then do it!
As a photographer I’d love to try importing my own images into Midjourney and see what happens.
So cool what we can do now!!
This is how I see Arland in my minds eye. Yep.
Everything I’ve tried thru the AIs either art or writing seems to be at the talented elementary school level. (shrug) apparently I’m not good at AI.
I love the way it captures his bulk. He feels vampire sized.
I’m sure it will be argued out in a court somewhere, with much better defined terms, but it should be noted that human artists are also trained on art without the creator’s consent. At some point in their development, ai art programs should be able to produce art that is more than simply derivative.
Appreciate the thought that you’ve added to the discussion. What I would add is that in formal training programs, there is an extensive rights & reproduction process to gain permission and pay for the rights to use images.
I’d also ask everyone to consider that there are accepted & societally sanctioned avenues for text based & music based plagiarism. I’m not saying that it’s easy but the history is there. Not so much for appropriating visual images.
for AI images are changed into text before training. often it use the description that is used for blind people. it’s not trained on the image. it’s trained on the text of the image.
I understand the caveats. But now I want to see what Ingrid’s AI comes up with for George…
Oooh fun challenge!!

Am I the only one to think a calendar of House Andrews characters would be cool?
Would love to see Helen, George and Officer Marais.

it is nice tought I feel creepy with AI creations – painting, writing …. – when I see how good it is in some areas I cant stop going into philosophical questions about humanity and our future… and as I paint sometimes and had developed my own little style that I love I would have fealt REALLY REALLY bad and demotivated if someone started to create images based on it.
Objectively speaking very nice images, I love Arland and Caldenia… Sean is tottally not the way I imagine him.
The characters look fantastic, especially Arland and Sean. However, the AI doesn’t quite get “personality” yet, amirite? Most of them look half asleep, with no real expressions on their faces. But good basic images imho. And I do love the Gertrude Hunt illos! Thanks for sharing!
What is sticking out of Lord Soren’s head?
Never mind, I saw mod R’s previous explanation

Love the pictures of the characters. I helps me to visualize what the authors writes to describe them. Great job
Love the staircase!
This was fun!
These came out really well! Love Arland! *__*
I tried doing the Treaty Stay garden in Midjourney and just couldn’t get it 100 % right… >.>
The AI doesn’t trace. It has ‘learned’ from a huge dataset (around 5 billion images) that contains everything possible, scraped from the net. The thorny issue here is that no one had a chance to consent to having their data scraped and used for this training.
Using the information that the AI has learned, it generates a new image from noise (no tracing here) that it believes corresponds to the word prompts that it’s been given. Told to generate a cat, it will do so… however, the cat might not respond to what you envisioned. It takes a lot of trial and error to get it right.
The copyright issue is a very convoluted one. For example, style can’t be copyrighted (just like technique can’t). So I could tell the AI to generate an image in the style of van Gogh. That’s legitimate. What’s not legitimate is then promoting it as an image made by van Gogh.
It’s complicated…
Wasnāt there another artist created version of Arland?
If I recall correctly, if memory serves, it wasā¦..livelier.
There is a commissioned original illustration of Arland created by the regular Innkeeer artist, Doris Desanthus ????. Itās included in Clean Sweep.
This is an image created by an artificial intelligence given a te t prompt.
Wow, this is the second time today that I’ve read or heard about AI art. Fascinating options. CBS Sunday Morning had a good article on AI art, by David Pogue, I think. Thanks for sharing!
Caldenia is the closest to my picture of her. Do any of them look like what you or Gordon thought up?
Arland and Maud are great, according to Ilona ????.
These are way cool. I enjoyed!
MY MAGIC TIDES PAPERBACK WAS DELIVERED TODAY!!!
YAY! ENJOY! ????
lucky!!!!!!
enjoy!!!
anxiously awaiting ebook delivery….
Oh these are fun, though I have deep reservations about AI art in general. Dina looks like a young Reese Witherspoon and now I canāt unsee it. Her broom also looks more like a paintbrush ???? AI does has limitations which Iām thankful for
Sean looks a little too steampunk lol, he reminds me of Chris McNally, an actor from When Calls the Heart (Hallmark show) but without a beard
Thank you for sharing!
Using AI for art makes me extremely uncomfortable. A lot of it is based on training of real artists and I would rather see them get credit for art over AI. Just my two cents…
Thatās why the images are shared for entertainment only ????.
Even set that uses elements of AI will not be used as covers, commercial etc by House Andrews until the legal boundaries are more defined.
Yes, I think it’s fine for entertainment. I just feel like there is a lot of unknown with this type of technology.
That being said, the images are gorgeous.
Beautiful!
Thank you for spending your free time finding ways to amuse & entertain the BDH!
Thanks for sharing, always appreciate seeing someoneās perspective.
There are huge issues with AI images as you mentioned. I dont see how it can possibly be an ethical thing to use in the future unless the art and artists used to train the AI are compensated for their image use. Because it will just be iterations on their images the “new” ai art is.
Agreed!
Yes he is!! All of the characters are gorgeous!
These are cool photos! But, i am personally avoiding using any of these art AI apps, as many of my friends are artists.
scary how similar a few of those turned out to how I think of them. Not sure about Sean however it does match the except
Those are really lovely, and more images would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for sharing them.
Whoa! Love the images! And Arland is especially wonderful. Thanks for sharing this!
These are awesome!! Keep them coming!
My biggest complaint with the AI generated art, aside from the obvious corny right issues, is that I would love to know whose art is used in the composite. As far as I am aware the donāt list them, there are obviously some talented artists and I would love to get better acquainted with their works.
Arland and Maud were spot on. Caldenia needed to look more like Helen Mirren. Dina
more like Hayden Panettiere and Sean more like Theo James. Gertrude Hunt was gorgeous!!
Yes, this Armand is gorgeous. Maybe next time heāll show a little fang . . .????
Oh, be-have! ????
Edit: oh that looks like an evil cat hehe. I meant it more Austin Powers-like š
OMG!!! Thank you for sharing this Mod R!
I loved making these and Iām so glad you guys enjoyed them!!!
Ilona shared it! ???? Thank you for showing them to us
Okay, followed the links and surprised myself by really liking that version of Maud and Dina. Never pictured them that way but it fits somehow.
Amazing!
But can I still marry this one? Fabulous.
SO — an interesting take on AI. My mom is an artist, and an art educator with a PhD. I asked her about it. She said every society and every generation creates with the tools they have. So art is every evolving, ever changing, and there’s a place for all of it. If you have vines, reeds and mud, you create with those. Crayons – yup, be creative. And computers & AI are just another tool in the creative process. When I play with an AI & then change & edit it, I’m creating something new. Does the AI learn & take bits from other images? Sure – but what artist doesn’t? You develop your style as an artist from looking at the images that have come before you. It’s going to be very interesting to see where all this goes!
wow. loved the pictures. Arland is gorgeous!
When I initially saw Ingridās creation of what Arland looks like, I saw a flash of the divineās creationā¦. Namely, Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia ????

Whoa, I fully support anyone else who wants to try this for fun “entertainment purposes only.” On any of the series. These pictures are gorgeous!! Thank you for sharing!
I was surprised at what the AI came up with for Dinaās broom. A broom seems like the easiest thing in the whole Innkeeper universe for it to get right! Just goes to show how little I know about AI training. ???? ????
I was thinking about this more and though I have no actual evidence of this, I imagine that most images of brooms, and especially of people holding/using brooms, have the broom oriented bristles down, handles up. However, there are probably a lot of images out there of people holding paintbrushes bristles up, handles down. Like someone painting a downstroke on a wall. That may be why Dinaās broom looks like a paintbrush. ????
Nice! Kind of like a bad-ass Petticoat Junction.
These are Wonderful! Beautiful! Perfect!
Thank you for the fun post.
Yes, AI is weird and concerning, but can be fun too.
š
Ok, this may sound very āwoo wooā (but I promise I am not a conspiracy theorist!) As impressed as I am with AI (especially in the fields of medicine and science), part of me worries about where this eventually goes and where the āguard railsā are.
Does AI ever get to the point where human beings are no longer needed because anything they can do is inferior to what can be done with AI? Hopefully, AI will always be a bonus to humanity by allowing human creativity more time and freedom to create, but itās a worry.
Having said thatā¦..Arland! ????
At the moment AI is very specific in what it can do, the art ones can’t pay chess or reccognise the face of a specific person from a photo. Any human can do more than one thing from reading a book, to making a cup of tea, to drinking that tea while reading the book. Until AI’s are more than very narrow specialists, AND can make more of themselves I don’t think we need to worry about being redundant.
These were great! So enjoyed looking at them. Thanks!
This was fun. Caldenia in particular looked exactly as I had imagined her
Caldenia? Which one?
OK⦠I REALLY, REALLY like this Arland better.
Wow, Arland does look GORGEOUS! Ahhhhhhh.
Those images are lovely.
Thanks for sharing – I appreciate there are copyright issues, but my those images are beautiful!
Interesting! Thanks for sharing. I do like all the pieces, but a little too derivative from our history to match my mindās eye view of the series. Then thereās the copyright issue. Too convoluted for me, have always been glad Iām not a lawyer.
Absolutely fantastic description rendered art.
You nailed each one.
Ruff!! Gorgeous Arland!
Fascinating. (As a certain green-blooded, pointy eared menace to mental stability will say sometime in the future.)
as one of the artists whoās had her work stolen to ātrainā an AI⦠ya, insert a really long rant.
Which is why the images are shared only for entertainment purposes, and official art is commissioned and paid for from independent, wonderful artists.
Damn!! I like this Arland!
For fun/entertainment purposes only…well, I was entertained and it is fun to see what images were generated.
Nice job and thank you for sharing!!! They don’t necessarily match the images in my head, but they are excellent!
Love the gleam in Caldenia’s eyes. She looks like she’s either about to start some sh** or has just finished and come up with the perfect solution for disposing of the evidence/bodies.
This absolutely matches my vision of description. So maybe AI is the way to go for characters. But it was the French humans vision of KD world Atlantis that got a Wilmington story.
When I looked at Ingrid’s AI results yesterday, I was very impressed and just loved the depictions of the inn. They are marvelous, and such a pleasure to view.
BUT, I am more than a little distressed to see how AI has the potential to remove humanity completely from artwork. If AI can copy/paste pieces of existing human art into new compilations, then AI can copy/paste pieces of House Andrews writing, and J Frost’s writing, and all the authors we love, taking snippets and pieces and themes out of their writing, so that mindless, soul-less AI’s can slice them into novels, and then AI’s will make the cover art, mechanical voices will read them, and bots will wrap them and mail them.
AI’s have the capacity to put all artists, all writers, all human makers and creators out of work. And because the shareholders in the AI enterprises want money and don’t care about human ethics, the AI firms’ will undersell the few remaining human artists, musicians, writers, making it impossible for human writers and artists to make a living. That will leave you and me and the BDH with nothing except robot made canned regurgitation of chopped up human-made art and writings and music.
Please, support only human-made writing and art. Don’t help to put artists and writers out of work, think before you help to destroy an artist’s livelihood.
These are beautiful – great inspiration –
Beautiful persons. Caldenia looks perfect to me.
Nothing like they are in my head! I imagine real human looking people, these look like cartoon/anime.
This is Arland as I imagined he would be. Just curious why he his skin is not grey toned as most vampires seem to be, or am I misunderstanding this?
This is an IA generated image based on a text prompt- it will not get all the details right and will add random elements in š
That is a perfect image of Arland. One point. I thought his body armor was black? Still yummy.
Perversely, the images I like the most are Caldenia, Lord Soren and Maud, in roughly that order. I also found them fun whilst continuing to be grateful for the scrupulous ethics of all involved.
Wow! That definitely works as Arland for me.
Regarding Arland;
Holy Smokeshow, Batman!
That man is absolutely gorgeous!
These pictures are right on point!
a third, understanding the technology.

yes. but that’s bad actors which you’ll find in any field stealing stuff. artists got there stuff stolen all the time even from schools for their social media. the school my kids went to didn’t even teach fair use, creative commons and copyright laws. this all before AI. how many times have artists had their works stolen, posted on social media and sold on Etsy before AI.
I’ve read books on kindle with identical plots to some of my favorite authors. if they happen to use chatGPT to do so in the future, is it the product or the person who is responsible?
why are we blaming inanimate objects for copyright issues? it’s just a tool.
I just wanted to thank you for making the Innkeeper series. I enjoy and look forward to everything you write, but this is a favorite for me because it just seems like you have the most fun making this endless riff on fantastical possibilities with some great characters from the Edge series thrown in. I love it.
OMGOSH, when they said he was beautiful, I was a little put off but now I see the errors of my ways. That is not a feminine term!
He really is so beautiful! Iām ashamed for ever doubting yāall. Beg pardon please, it will never happen again!
I had recently started playing with DALL-E just to understand how it works, and I came across this interesting YouTube video. They suggest including the followingāmood/emotion, quality, source, setting, description, subject, and destinationā in the prompt you give DALLE.
So instead of plain ol’ “red jordans 11,” they put “epic 300mm professional promotional, commercial, advertisement for red jordans 11 shoes, movie poster trending on the Nike website” and it seems to make a real differenceā½
The pictures are amazing. But that’s not a broom, that’s an oversized paint brush
Just seen a article on BBC where Getty images is taking legal action against a AI image creator. Interesting read
I have to admit these are nice visuals, but I also have to admit I immediately saw Matt Damonās face in the Arlan cover photo and when I went to the others can see him again in Lord Sorenās face as well as a young Reece Witherspoon in Dinaās image. I know Sean looks like another actor as well but I canāt place the name.
Thatās not a complaint, as they do very much fit and as I mentally tag them as actors it doesnāt ruin the imagination part for me.
Just find it interesting how the AI pulled the faces from existing images of people. Plus, now we know who you can hire when you are ready for the movie. (One can dreamā¦)
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing. Arland and Lord Soren are great. Not critique of your efforts or AI limitations š
Ingrid’s pics are wonderful. They are very similar to what I imagine they look like. Thanks for sharing. Anymore is always appreciated š
Just now getting to this post, and I’m very impressed. Not all were the way that I picture the character, but the art work is cool and fun. AI, like anything else, will end up being both good and bad, but this would be a fun way to use up time. Thank you for sharing!
