When Gordon was in the service – this was before we moved to Texas and I learned to make proper Texmex cuisine – I made Lipton soup fajitas. I don’t remember what flavor it was, since it’s been years, I think Spicy Fiesta or Red Pepper or some silliness like that, but basically it was a mix that gave you an approximation of tortilla soup, a South-Western staple.
I would get my chicken, slice it into long slices, dip it in the mix, and sauté in a bit in the pan, and make fajitas with it. Gordon and the kids loved it. Except abruptly, my go to soup vanished from the store shelves. I finally asked people in the commissary and they looked it up for me and told me it was discontinued.
I felt bitterly betrayed. I liked the soup. I bought the soup. How dare they discontinue it? (Obviously, this is all about me.)
I have experienced other discontinued disasters. Viennetta Ice Cream cake was the best ice-cream ever. Light vanilla ice-cream with very thin layers of chocolate. So delicious. Sadly it vanished before I turned twenty. A1 used to make a sweet flavor of steak sauce, which I can no longer find. There were packets of yellow rice flavoring I used to buy with actual saffron in it. No longer available. Every time it feels a little like betrayal.
Yesterday was our 25 year anniversary. We stayed home, ordered in, and watched Invincible. Amazing show. Delta variant is raging through Texas. Kid 1’s boyfriend is sick and isolating in the garage apartment. We are monitoring him with an oximeter. He is miserable. Kid 1 has had her first shot, and Gordon and I are fully vaccinated. Kid 2 had her first shot and her boyfriend is getting his first.
We happened to live next a massive outdoor outlet mall. 250 stores, 1,000,000 sq. ft of space, the largest or second largest, depending on whom you ask, retail store in US. It is a bastion of consumerism, which is not necessarily a good thing. We get traffic from everywhere.
A few weeks ago I’ve found out that Maurices outlet in that mall has been discontinued. It fell victim to COVID. It was my go to T-shirt store. Yes, I can buy clothes online, but I am a plus sized woman and I like to try things on. Yankee Candle followed suit. It was about the only place you could get Yankee candles dirt cheap, because normally they are expensive as hell. The only two stores which caused me to brave the insanity of that parking lot are out of business.
It’s not just the stores. A few of the favorite restaurants closed and never reopened. A massage spa that was just about the only decent place to get a deep tissue massage when your back completely gives out on you is out of business. Massage was not a luxury for me. More like a hail Mary because despite my best efforts, I sit a lot.
People lost jobs. People are losing housing.
They are talking another lock down again, so I bought an extra thing of paper towels, toilet paper, and sanitary products. Just in case they get discontinued. My Perestroika Russianness was triggered. Food and goods shortages, I am on it.
Well, this post got heavy in a hurry. Normally I aim for upbeat, but I guess today is not that day. I decided not have the pandemic in Dina’s world. Because I have that power.
Let’s talk about discontinued things. What do you wish they would bring back and what substitutes did you find that were better than the old thing?
Moderator R says
❤️ Happy Anniversary ❤️ !
If you come to England and we have an in-person job performance review hehe, I will provide a veritable Viennetta feast. We have Classic AND Neapolitan and Mint Viennetta here. Keeping the boss happy⭐.
I’ve known since I was a teen that I am one of the Harbingers of Failure https://news.mit.edu/2015/harbinger-failure-consumers-unpopular-products-1223 . It’s only encouraged my hoarding tendencies, I know if I love it I have to try and get multiples of it because it will be discontinued.
A says
Morning Mod R – I am the same way
BananaTricky says
We also have caramel flavour – looking at Ocado at this very minute (online grocery shopping) and pondering whether to order one for old-times sake LOL
Nelly says
In France, we also have pistachio, crème brûlée and Tiramisu Viennetta flavors. You should all visit when we’ll be able to travel safely.
Moderator R says
Pistachio! <3
Jean says
Creme brulee!! Tiramisu!! (Haven’t seen Viennetta in our area grocery stores in years….)
Gaëlle says
In France we do like our ice cream! Don’t we Nelly?
CharisN says
Oh this is just cruel!! ????
I want caramel.
Faye says
Hey there,
I’m living on the east cost of Ireland. I think, House Andrews should move over here. Because we still have Viennetta Ice Cream as well as good priced Yankee Candles. 😉
Sorry to read that you’re so upset and miserable over there. Sending out tons of good vibes to all of you who suffer through this Pandemic.
I’ve experienced something like that as well ever since. The worst thing for me was, when I moved from Berlin, Germany to Ireland, I didn’t get my dried Salami anymore. I was addicted to them. I have still a couple of Friends and my sister who send them by post to from time to time. There is just no replacement for them.
(This are my favorite ones: https://www.dutchexpatshop.com/en/aoste-stickado-mini-salami-dry-and-pure-pork-classic-only-available-within-europe.html?gclid=CjwKCAjw0qOIBhBhEiwAyvVcf55FP8HiP2254k_86ODX41g5czqH4wXLAy1AQyFTSvZpAzxGei2pQRoCAhcQAvD_BwE )
*sends out magic good vibes to everybody who needs them*
Darleen says
Yes, Dry salami! Ate it as a child in California, can’t find it on the East coast and no one here has even heard of it.
Gina Hansen says
So sorry – I love it. We have it on the US West Coast (Oregon) and I’ve had the opportunity to eat several lovely Eastern European dried meats from specialty shops here, as well. Such a great treat, especially as a late afternoon snack when the day is really crazy.
Laurie says
I’m in Umpqua Oregon, where are you?
Debbie B says
Can’t really hoard that Ice Cream cake.
Joan says
I miss Lea & Perrins BBQ Sauce. It was not just ketchup, corn syrup and smoke flavoring. It was tangy, but not really spicy and not too sweet.
Patricia Schlorke says
I agree with that. I liked better than all the other steak sauces out in the market. In place of that, I use Heinz 57 sauce.
Darleen says
Chris and Pitt’s hickory BBQ sauce.
anna strait says
Just so you know, viennetta is back, you just have to find it.
Glennis says
I am buying it in Publix in Florida.
Beth says
I just bought one yesterday in Publix :). I missed them too and I think they’re wildly expensive (I think $7.50?) but I got one on sale for $5.
zEmfIrKa says
You can search where they are sold near you 🙂
https://www.goodhumor.com/us/en/products/cakes/vanilla-viennetta-frozen-dairy-dessert-cake.html
Cindy says
Thanks for the link. Unfortunately, the closest store that sells it is almost 300 miles away!
Cindy says
Oh my goodness there is one store here in Anchorage Ak that actually says has it.
Liz Mansfield says
Wow, 99p in Tesco!
Momo says
I don’t wanna brag but we have the big viennetta (more than 1000 ml) on sale for 1,5€ right now….???? one guess what I am going to buy tomorrow
Bob says
Kellogg’s has discontinued their Just Right cereal…i can’t say i bought it often because it was expensive and cereal in general is a waste of money, but it was delicious and occasionally it made me happy.
They had made Just Right for something like 40 years… There is no substitute :/
AnnekeB says
I second that motion!
It had to be the most aptly named cereal ever. It simply was “just right”. Was very sad when I moved back to South Africa and couldn’t find it anymore. Bought it as a staple when living in the Emirates, but don’t think it was ever available in the South African market.
Sad sigh…
Nancy Upchurch says
So many things discontinued. One of our favorites? Daiquiri Ice from Baskin Robbins.
I’m sure you’ve thought of this before, but vis-a-vis the sitting all day thing, have you considered a standing desk? There are some good ones out there that are considered ‘convertible’ and won’t fall apart after two times up or down. Prior to March 2020 (which hereinafter may be recognized as the masked month of doom, I guess) Arizona state government HRs everywhere had begun to supply these to people who required them, too.
Which is not to say I use them. <– inveterate sitter\should getter upper.
Victoria Moreno-Jackson says
I loved daiquiri ice!!
Sarah Jackson says
THIS. Was my favorite ice cream EVER.
A says
YESSSSS. I loved that ice.
Jennifer Avalos says
Daiquiri Ice at Baskin Robbins is still in CA but is seasonal or comes out once a year until sold out. Until it returns. I was told they bring it back in the summer. However, I’ve had it in winter.????????♀️
Ilona says
I’ve tried it but I cannot type on a standing desk. I settle for moving every twenty minutes or so. 🙂
Ginger says
I have found that my standing desk trick is that the desk needs to be low enough to type (I’m bad and often rest my wrists on the edge), but then I need a really tall riser for my monitor.
LN says
The British writer KJ Charles uses a treadmill desk. How mad is that! She says it has solved all her back problems.
CJ says
Have you tried an Ergonomics consultant to help you get it just right? Or a PT? Bayer pharmaceuticals converted my whole campus to sit stand desks, and offered the ergo consultants to help everyone tweak them to best support their work style/health issues. It really helped me a ton, after my PT prescribed the desk for my back issues. ????
Debbie B says
I miss Cappuccino Concerto from B& R! And The Cappuccino cookies That Pepperidge Farms had!
Dianna Kilgore says
Love Daiquiri Ice!
Sarah says
I was just in Wyoming and the Kroger there sold Daiquiri Ice in the frozen section. I totally did a double-take when I saw it. It always reminds me of my grandpa.
Keri says
Daiquiri Ice was my absolute favorite – i was a kid and had no idea what a daiquiri was but i loved the taste and blue color
Leslie says
Me too! A favorite summer adult drink was an actual daiquiri ( lime or strawberry) with daiquiri ice instead of crushed ice.
Melody says
I miss daiquiri ice immensely. I used to get two scoops and paired it with raspberry sorbet, which they almost never have anymore. Doubly whammy.
PLLOR says
There was a Greek family restaurant near my house that closed beginning of Covid. It is now a seafood restaurant, sadly I do not eat seafood. There was a small mom and pop Korean restaurant that hasn’t reopened after covid either. I love food and so many of the restaurant closures have been really sad to see.
CharisN says
Oh we had a wonderful Italian restaurant called Patti’s. Just the BEST! Best chicken parmesan, best lovely soft bread, most wonderful salad dressing. Great thoughtful service – even the dinner mints were special. Went there the night he proposed (sigh). I miss it.
Tiffany says
I miss my local Indian restaurant. It closed in June, so sad. It was a once a month place for a while.
Aly P says
I can’t find Bounty with dark chocolate here in Romania. They sometimes appear every few years, and I have to buy a few if I wanna eat it. Otherwise I adapt to whatever I can find LOL
Kathryn B says
Arrrgh. That would be awful. I love dark chocolate Bounty. When I was a little girl 30 odd(cough 40 more like) years ago, Frys in the UK did what we called Magic Chocolate. It was actually called Frys 5 cream centre and I adored it. Each square had a different flavour, lemon, raspberry, orange etc. It’s been gone at least 35 years now from the UK shops and I still miss it
Moderator R says
OMG that sounds the best!
K Boyle says
Oh it was
Sharon Parsons says
I loved this too, but I have recently found full bars of the raspberry, orange and mint but unfortunately no lemon
Donna says
I remember buying and enjoying it and Cadbury used to do a bar of chocolate that had strawberry, orange and other flavors , it was like a mini box of chocolates and my boyfriend (now husband of 48 yrs) would buy one when we went to the cinema. Those were the days when 2 people could go to the cinema and see 2 films have some sweets or ice cream for less than £1. US 50 cents.
Surfergirl says
I’m old enough to remember 5 Centres! Actually, I make chocolates now, and I make all of those filling flavours, so I might try adding a chocolate np at like this to my repertoire … hmmmm …
Stacey says
I’m in the states. You write dark chocolate Bounty and I think chocolate-dipped paper towels. ????
Moderator R says
I snorted so loudly I woke up Mr Mod R. Chocolate dipped paper towels- I’m pretty sure I did that diet ????????
It’s Mounds in the US, right? Always sounded a bit…boobzy to me hehehe.
Stacey says
????
Yeah, Mounds. I had to look it up! I’m good with lorries and boots, but bounty was a new one.
Kim says
+1 I was thinking the same thing….what?!?!?
Sarah K says
It is a running joke in my household that we can’t say aloud in the grocery store that we like an item because it will be discontinued the next time we go in to buy it. Konriko makes a jalepeno all purpose seasoning. I have to order it directly from the company now in boxes of 12 because my store no longer carries it. Same thing with a jalepeno mustard from Silver Springs brand. End up having to order in larger quantities from online.
Patricia Schlorke says
When I lived in St. Louis there was a local dairy called Pevely, and they use to make Heavenly Hash ice cream. It was my favorite flavor. It had pretty much everything in it: chocolate shavings, nuts, marshmallow fluff, and other things I can’t remember all mixed in vanilla ice cream. Sadly, the dairy closed down long before COVID-19, and everything they made was gone. I haven’t found an equivalent of that flavor of ice cream since then. 🙁
I also love Breyer’s Rocky Road ice cream since it has marshmallow fluff in it instead of actual marshmallows. Luckily I can find it in one Kroger store.
Sara B. says
Haagen-Dazs Rocky Road uses marshmallow fluff too. — I agree that it is better with that instead of with actual marshmallows. Only ice cream where I lose all sense of portion contol.
Gretchen says
Ohhhh, Heavenly Hash… haven’t seen that in forever 🙁
Kirsten says
Ben and Jerry’s Phish Food has marshmallow. It is an evil, evil thing.
I can eat a few bites of any other ice cream but I have no “off” switch for Phish Food.
MaryF says
+100
Phish Food is the absolute best!
No off switch – exactly.
Sadly, My new Raley’s O-N-E store doesn’t carry it anymore because it has some “banned” ingredient. Would that be flavor? Because most of the stuff now in that store doesn’t have any. Flavor, that is. It was my favorite grocery store and now I don’t even go there.
Also Gemco. Does anyone remember that store? I was depressed for months after that closed back in the 80’s.
CYNTHIA SPILLER says
I loved Gemco. My mom worked in the Fabric Department and I bought a book every week there.
Sashkevon says
Same, no self control with phish food, and I wanted it all the time during my last trimester
Erika says
Gemco! Remember May Company?
Sara T says
I’ve stopped buying Breyers Rocky Road as I can’t control myself. At all!
Mary says
Beaters is made right near me, and they used to do peach ice cream. Yummy, tasted like fresh peaches and cream. Their strawberry is also great. Peach scarcer than hens teeth, and strawberry sells out within A few hours at the one store here that carries it. We yell to our FB friends when we see it in the store, so we might get some.
Mary says
Breyers, not beaters, dumb auto goofup!!
Patricia Schlorke says
Another item I remembered that was discontinued a long while back: Hires Root Beer. It was so much better than A&W.
Jw says
Hires is still available just hard to find!
Patricia Schlorke says
Good to know. ????
Dianna Kilgore says
Store bought A & W is not that good but what they serve in A & W Restaurants is great. Made in house with cane sugar and served in a frosted mug. Bottled and canned stuff from the store has high fructose corn syrup. Just can’t measure up.
CharisN says
Oh I miss my Diet Pepsi. I don’t know what the heck “they” did to it but it tastes like a vile chemical stew now…
Jdh says
Nestle makes a heavenly hash u der the parlour brand, but maybe that’s only in canada.
Marianne says
Noodles Romanoff. Family favorite. I did find a “recipe” to try and recreate it, used the orange cheese packet from Kraft’s Mac n cheese as the base. Meh…
Mary Ellen says
I loved it as well, even went so far as to call the source and ask. I have a copy of the same recipe with the Kraft Mac & cheese but it just doesn’t seem right.
Hillary Cresswell says
Yes!!! My mom and dad loved the boxed kind. She attempted to make it from scratch and it was horrid! She was so sad because she knew I would love those noodles.
Susan says
They used to also make Noodles Almandine. I’m sad both are gone. If you go to Pinterest, you can see a couple of copycat versions, but I haven’t had the courage to try, yet. If it doesn’t taste as good as I remember, it’s so disappointing.
Susan Reynolds says
Krogers used to carry a raspberry flavored instant ice tea mix. I think Nestea or Lipton’s had a diet peach and a diet raspberry ice tea mix. But the supply chain thing that put me into panic mode was when I couldn’t find frozen Fordhook Lima beans for about 6 months. I know, many people think they don’t like Lima beans, but that’s because the baby limas are, um, kinda greasy in texture. Slimy, maybe. Fordhook are more like mashed potatoes or peas in texture. Fortunately the Fordhooks are back. I think we have 5 or 6 bags in the freezer. Clearly it’s time to stock up again!
Toni says
Oh my gosh, where did you find Fordhook lima beans?! I used to be able to get them at Safeway but not for months now. I grew up in Southern California in a citrus growing area. When the trees were too small to bear much fruit they would plant lima beans between the rows to put nitrogen in the soil and for a cash crop. With a little salt and pepper and butter, they are the favorite veggie of my whole family!
Holly says
There’s a few things I’ve had nostalgia for in the past year that turned out to no longer exist. Viennetta is one of them. There were these lemon and orange jelly candies that my dad loved and they no longer exist, either.
More recently, I really liked Schweppes Dark Ginger ale – tasted like ginger ale with a bit of ginger beer mixed in. I didn’t buy it often b/c of the sugar but I’m disappointed it’s gone.
Sage says
If you can get Jamaican spicy ginger ale, that is the best. A particular type of kettlecooked chips was my go to. The company that made them is no longer there. They got bought out by one of the big brands. And the local soda pop company with the best Lime Rickey! Coke bought them out. No more Lime Rickey ????
Moderator R says
+1 on Jamaincan fiery gingery ale. The bestest.
CharisN says
Why do they buy things and then just kill them off?
Katy says
If you’re in the southeast US and can get Buffalo Rock ginger ale I like it better than the Schweppes Dark.
Proud Bookworm says
I am many years a victim of severe lactose intolerance. I learned to appreciate soy substitutes. Many of these products are being discontinued as the popularity of Almond, oat and coconut flourishes. I miss my soy products… Hugs to House of Andrews and wishes for a swift recovery to the BF!
Amy Ann says
Yes! Organic Valley used to make a delicious soy creamer that they discontinued a couple of years ago. It held up in the strong coffee I like. None of the other plant-based creamers come close. I have just given up and drink my coffee black.
Jennlor says
Congratulations to you both on your anniversary ????????
Rachel Ownbey says
Right before the pandemic Nature Valley started selling these amazing granola balls with peanut butter in the middle. A few months later they were gone forever and I think no longer manufactured. I can’t even find them online.
KMD says
I swear I saw a peanut butter stuffed granola bar at my grocery the other week, but it wasn’t nature valley.
Laura says
Cliff Bars makes those if you’re interested. They’re good.
Renee' says
Happy Anniversary.
Personal Touch Razor/Razorblades. I had to guard them from my daughters. Retired and don’t go out much now so the throwaways work just fine when needed.
My deep tissue massage place is closing this fall and she is moving west. She is terrific. She straightened out my daughter’s hip/back problem. I go regularly for back and migraine issues. I don’t know if I can find someone just as good.
Take care. Hope no one else gets sick and K1’s boyfriend gets better.
Darlene says
Yankee Candle – Storm Watch Scent. It was discontinued years ago, brought back for brief time and now disappeared again.
🙁
Haagen-Dazs: Honey Ice cream; my ultimate go-to ice cream flavor. Poof!
Erin says
Stormwatch was my favorite! I don’t understand why they discontinued it. ????
Carmalee says
Ooooh!
I drizzle honey on vanilla ice cream, but I’ve never tried it as an actual flavor!
But Haagen-Dazs coffee or coffee chocolate chip is my all time favorite. And apparently a LOT of other folks as well; it’s always sold out at my grocery store.
Sechat says
Likewise Cappucino Commotion… and their special promotion of 2007 Caramelized Pear and Toasted Pecan,
sigh….
Booklovingirl says
Haagen-Dazs Honey Vanilla!!!!!! My ALL TIME favorite. I found it in store once a couple years ago, they were doing a flash back favorites or something. Otherwise very rarely it is in an actual Haagen Dazs store. Oh I wish I could get some right now!!!!!
LizMiss says
I remember when they introduced Honey Ice cream with big promotion at HD shop: lots of info on how important bees are and how they were struggling…loved that flavor!
Katy says
Cadbury truffles. Yum yum
Toni says
Sweet Baby Ray’s for BBQ sauce is our go-to. It’s absolutely the best. Just the right amount of sweetness to the sauce.
re: back… my husband came home with this (see link), I thought he had lost his mind. It was ridiculous. It wasn’t going to work. My back pain was getting to the point where I was hardly able to sleep and he thought some dohicky from Bed, Bath, and Beyond would help?
EXCEPT, it was *amazing*. You can adjust the neck height. (I’m short waisted, so I still have to sit on a pillow even with the neck as low as it can go.) You can select which sections of your back/neck area you want massaged. You can add heat. (It’s gentle heat.) If it’s too strong, you can put a towel between it and you and it’s kinda perfect.
I literally quit having pain in my back and neck–all caused by all the sitting I do. Highly recommend if you haven’t tried one. (I think sometimes they have them set up in the store so you can try it first.)
https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/product/homedics-2-in-1-shiatsu-massaging-seat-topper-with-removeable-massage-pillow/5514858
btw, Happy Anniversary!
(And to your question, so many places have closed here in the Quarter that it’s just exceptionally depressing.)
Patricia Schlorke says
I can get Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ sauce in Fort Worth at the Walmart I go to do shopping. I can get the original, Honey, and Spicy.
CharisN says
Oh, are you in New Orleans?
I want to visit. Our anniversary is this week and early this summer I thought maybe maybe we could go off for a weekend Savannah or NOLA or Jekyll Island and now its a big old ain’t going anywhere burger.
It would be OK if I had not got my hopes up darn it.
Toni says
Hi CharisN — yep, I live right in the heart of the French Quarter, about a half a block from Jackson Square. I love living here (we are on a very quiet street, which is sort of random and odd for here, so I have the best of both worlds).
Everything had opened back up and we were excited to have festivals again and the economy desperately needed it and then BOOM, Delta variant is kicking everyone’s butt.
I have family in the medical field here and it’s really really really bad.
So good decision–and I feel your pain. And Happy Anniversary. We are going to have our 40th next year and I hope like hell the world is back on track by then. This is just crazy with so many people still in denial; it’s like watching slow-motion murder-suicide.
Gretchen says
I’m two weeks late for responding to this post, and I doubt you’ll see this message, but Sweet Baby Ray’s barbecue sauce is available all over the place in Southern California. If your Walmart doesn’t have it in the store, you can get it online from them. Costco also has it online and in the store.
sarah says
Happy Anniversary!
Victoria Moreno-Jackson says
I miss Gatorade gum.
Erika Hedglin says
Wow. I was suddenly my childhood self remembering that gum. Thank you.
Estes says
Oh yes! Gatorgum! I associate that with softball league in my childhood. We would buy it at the sporting goods store.
Fern says
Happy silver anniversary! Hope K1’s BF recovers soon and the vaccinations go smoothly.
If you’re a fellow Costco shopper you’ve probably experienced the same issue: when I love a product, I have to go back within a week or 2 and buy another because otherwise it might leave their rotation. This has come in handy with certain staples like comfortable sweats, etc. Doesn’t help my hoarder tendencies (big hug to Mod R).
Moderator R says
????
francesca says
costco has a habit of regarding random items as seasonal. if you see a price ending in .97 with a snowflake on the tag, stock up! it will be gone soon.
why pine nuts are seasonal at costco, i will never understand. it is pesto season now!
njb says
Blue bell used to do a seasonal chocolate covered cherry ice cream that was luscious. It had little chunks of chocolate with chocolate syrup filling and the best cherries. A close second is cherry Garcia from Ben and Jerry.
Blue bell also used to have a Mexican praline. It was so much better than their standard pecan praline. I’ve looked for them for years now.
Mel says
I second you on the BlueBell chocolate cherry ice cream. Ugh. Cherry Garcia is close but no cigar.
Susanna says
There used to be this wonderfully spicy christmas chocolate bar by Fazer. I don’t even remember what it had, but I loved it and bought it several times every christmas. And then they discontinued it and started to sell several orher christmas chocolate bars. None where as good. All were smaller than the original.
They later started to sell it in a smaller paperwrapped chocolate pieces but somehow it’s just not as good as the bars were.
I’m surprised about Vienneta, we have have it in Finland pretty much as long as I can remember (so at least 20+ years, I loved that stuff as a kid. It was so fancy). Although maybe it’s european thing and for some reason they just haven’t sold it in USA?
Lisa W says
Happy Anniversary!
I miss the old Betty Crocker powdered chocolate fudge frosting mix. We used it to make fudge candy drops and despite many attempts, I cannot recreate the texture.
Kristina says
They changed SnackWell’s Devil’s Food cookies and my husband is heartbroken.
Happy Anniversary! Stay well!
Wendy says
Mine too!! Too much marshmallow.
Emilie says
Viennetta still exists in France, for your next visit to France, you can taste it.
MaryF says
How naughty of you to post such a delicious-looking picture.
Oh wait, I’m supposed to go to France at the end of this month (COVIC-19 willing) and I can have some. Oh, happy day.
Laurence says
Good! They are really easy to find in stores, at least the vanilla flavour (my favorite)
Pamela says
Thanks for the picture. I had no idea what Viennetta was. Does look yummy.
SharonA says
Mccormick’s Meat Marinade. So yummy. Haven’t found a good replacement for it yet. ????
Marian Scharnagl says
Wasn’t that originally, Adophs, can’t find that either. I’ve looked on Walmart and Amazon but very expensive by the case!
K D says
Mccormick’s (Imitation) Brandy Extract
I can no longer make the brandy ball cookies from my youth 🙁
I have tried multiple alternatives and they all have off flavors that result in inedible cookies in the trash.
Dana G says
+1 to this! It was most definitely McCormicks. I used it to marinade the beef for my stew recipe. Nothing I’ve tried since compares.
Shayera says
They’re actually supposed to be bringing Vienetta back. The Good Humor website shows that they’re available in Krogers in Houston. 🙂
JCH says
Viennetta FTW! You can actually search it out. https://www.goodhumor.com/us/en/products/cakes/vanilla-viennetta-frozen-dairy-dessert-cake.html
Also, on that note, I miss Jello Pudding Pops. They were back for a little bit, but have disappeared again. Perhaps it’s because of the association with Bill Cosby…
And happy anniversary!
Laura says
YES! I loved me some pudding pops. They had a lovely super thin coating of ice on the outside and once you licked through thatthey were just creamy and delicious. I thought the same thing about the Cosby connection, but kids now a days wouldn’t have the association. Couldn’t they just get a new spokesperson?
Also, grape flavored swedish fish. I love the red ones too, but the grape were really good.
Quickbeam says
Danish-Go-Rounds. My husband and I loved them as kids. Then they went away.
Wendy says
Happy Anniversary!!! I’ve experienced this many times. I usually find some substitute or something new. I do hate watching small businesses struggle, and it’s always sad to see them go. But i like change and discovering new things, so i just role with it.
Lisa says
The Pina Colada icees at Taco Bell
Yum !
Really wanted to try one with rum ????
Estes says
Taco Bell got rid of several things permanently during covid. I miss their Mexican pizza, and I reallllllly miss the offering pico as an option. I always ordered pico with everything.
Judy E Schultheis says
I have been eyeing my toilet paper supply and considering a run to the store. And I live alone!
The only thing I can think of that I used to buy that I miss is Godiva ice cream. I’m not a big fan of ice cream, but sometimes …. Their chocolate chip was the best vanilla ice cream I have ever had, with GODIVA chocolate in it. Eaten with the proper degree of respect, a 12-ounce carton would last me three weeks.
Tapati says
Ooh, Godiva had a chocolate raspberry flavor that I really loved.
Sarah says
I am often betrayed by Trader Joe’s. They used to have a frozen version of poutine that was yummy: gone. Then they had these delicious thin sliced potatoes with garlic: gone. The latest disappearance: the Chicken Balti pie (a savory, curried chicken pie).
It makes me so sad!
Kirsten says
Same thing with their Chicken Quesadillas that my mom loves. Things just go poof over there and you’re out of luck.
Kim Stewart says
They had the best chocolate cake mix, too, and their sugar cookie mix that came out at Christmas was delicious.
Alicia I says
Nabisco made a cookie bar shaped called Ideal. They were amazing haven’t seen them in maybe 50 years. Still miss em.
Hannah Chiu says
There was this buffet chain that I’ve gone to since I was 5 (or younger, my memory isn’t great) that was shut down in early covid of 2020. It was called Souplantation, or Sweet Tomatoes in other states on the West Coast. I’m in my mid twenties and every time I pass by a location, I feel sad. They had this incredible salad bar and chicken noodle soup that I would only eat when I was there. Pandemic sucks. (They were struggling pre Covid and this was the final nail in the coffin).

Sweet Tomatoes was my favorite restaurant in the world. Every time we traveled south we would stop in the one at Kennasaw Georgia. It made the drive from Michigan to Florida tolerable. I will miss that place.
Zot says
Same! My family used to go so often that we nicknamed it “The Kitchen”. Also, whenever it comes up in conversation with various friends, there is always an impromptu moment of silence and sad faces. 🙁
SAMK says
Our sweet Tomatoes went away well before the pandemic, but they had lost quality before they folded. I liked it because it was a bit healthier than other choices, but since I lost use of one hand, I so much prefer having food brought to me.
Sara B. says
Campbell’s Scotch Broth soup … they stopped making it in the US, but for a while one could still order from Canada. All gone now. And Heintz is just not the same (also hard to get). I find recipies, but no, I do not want to make it; I just want to open a can for my lunch when/while I work from home.
Also … and this was a one-off, only found it once, … Blue Bunny riff on creamsicle ice cream, but with coconut icecream and mango sorbet.
Lisa says
Seconding the Campbell’s Scoth Broth soup! I wish they would bring it back.
Gretchen says
For years, my husband’s mantra has been “If you find something you like, go back and buy them all”. Sadly, this doesn’t really work with food.
Sarah Taylor says
I did that with T-shirts and cardigans. I bought one in every color. I don’t care if that is strange. My closet is a rainbow of things I wear constantly!
Sarah Taylor says
My brand of bouillon cubes disappeared! I… don’t understand! It was a common staple everywhere and now all I see are these super fancy bone broth things and I just want my tiny little cube with a ton of flavor back. 🙁
I also loved a Jack Daniel’s mustard. We found it and put it on everything. Then it disappeared.
My favorite cider was discontinued. Angry Orchard Ginger. It was the perfect blend of sweet and tart. SIGH.
Kristi says
Ooo, Ginger? I’ll bet that was one of Angry Orchard’s seasonal flavors. I’d love to try that one!
MoCo says
Not sure where you’re located but there’s a bunch of ginger ciders that are really good. Citizen Cider makes a great one (Dirty Mayor) as does Nine Pin.
Jenette says
One thing that was discontinued and brought back recently was Olive Garden’s chocolate lasagna. It’s a ridiculously rich dessert made of thin layers of chocolate cake and cream cheese frosting plus more frosting and shaved chocolate on top. When it was discontinued, I was so sad, so my husband looked up a copycat recipe online and made it for me. It took three boxes of cake mix and was 12 inches tall when finished. We couldn’t eat it all, but we tried. ????
Miriam Gladen says
I dearly loved Häagen-Dazs Tiramisu but it’s not available anymore in Germany ????
Corrine B says
I miss Dr. Slice.

Happy Anniversary!
Every China, glass, and silverware pattern I have ever owned has been discontinued. They had been made for decades. Discontinued within a year. It’s so bad they discontinued one I was only thinking of getting!
The one dessert I haven’t found in years is Männer chocolate hazelnut wafers covered in dark chocolate. They apparently ceased to exist as soon as I came back from studying overseas.
The stress for the Eastern Europeans I know regarding staple food and such is very real. 🙁
Tim Illingworth says
Replacements Ltd in North Carolina may be your friend. Your bank account won’t like them…
LauraR in Chico says
I was looking for teaspoons in the stainless steel version of Damask Rose pattern. Replacements has a few, for $30 – $35, each. For stainless.
Oneida made this pattern for over 50 years. Sad.
Oh yeah, Ben and Jerry’s had a flavor years ago called Marsha Marsha Marshmellow. It was like Smores. Chocolate ice cream with toasted marshmellow and chunks of graham crackers. I miss it.
trailing wife says
Love, love, love Replacements, Ltd!!! (Www.replacements.com) They not only carry my porcelain pattern, but also my mother’s/grandmother’s Arzberg White, and my/my mother’s sterling silverware pattern, my father’s/his mother’s silverplate pattern, and were able to identify my great-grandmother’s German sterling pattern, of which I have the very few pieces that survived the war.
Sometimes Ebay has better prices on individual pieces, but they don’t have the breadth or consistency of Replacement’s warehouse.
emily says
Same here, my Waterford, my Gorham china pattern and my silver pattern all gone. While I can get them from Replacements, Ltd. they are as expensive as all get out.
Debbie says
Ah oh.. I didn’t know about Maurices 🙁
I hope it doesn’t close in PA.

Land O’Lakes white cheese changed their recipe about 30 years ago…..still miss it and I haven’t found anything close. Let not even get into McDonalds changing their French fry oil. Still won’t eat there! ( Although probably a good thing!)

Rimmel Lipstick Shade: Goddess. The best most perfect neutral lip colour ever and it is gone.
I lost my Bikram Yoga Studio thanks to the lockdown. Those studios are locally owned and our studio just couldn’t survive the staggering ineptitude of our government that didn’t know how to conduct a proper once and for all lockdown to get things under control. Instead, they played the see saw game with peoples’ livelihoods and really messed up so many small businesses that could have survived if they would have just taken the lockdown seriously.
Wow. That was a rant and apparently I am bitter.
LARRY says
Chung King Frozen Egg Rolls. I loved those things. I could eat a dozen as a kid.
Stacy McKnight says
I almost hate to LOVE something as that is the kiss of death gif a product lol! I feel your pain! (I have a niece and nephew that morn the pictured soup as it was the key to their favorite braised pork roast) the discontinued product I miss the most is Lancôme moisturizing lipstick color Delice. It was the color of my lips only prettier somehow. Gone. It has been gone for a while. I’m still sad. Congratulations on your anniversary!

Diet cranberry Sierra Mist. Just can’t find it anymore ????
Sandra Webb says
There’s something about cranberry. I used to buy cranberry drink mix, usually Walmart brand. But when Crystal stopped making theirs the store brand went away. You can’t find a cranberry drink mix anymore.
Laura Martinez says
Maybelline Black Velvet eye liner with the original twisty pencil. I think that me and Jon Waters are still mourning.
Also, assorted moisturizers and cosmetics. Every time I find one I like, they discontinue the bloody thing. It is very annoying.
Sandra says
Enjoli. Wore it forever, always got compliments. Revlon discontinued it after 30 years. I bought up every bottle I could find in the store and online. Now I hoard what little I have left for special occasions.

On a better note: have you tried woodwick or voluspa candles? They cost exorbitant amounts in Canada BUT in the US, they are really reasonably priced and they smell divine. Pretty much the only candles I can handle with my migraines because they are soy based not chemical based and their scents are non-chemical.
Kim says
15+ years later I’m still sad Sally Hansen discontinued my favorite silver nail polish. It was called Seductress Frost and it sparkled so nice. I do dip powder nails these days and some of them glitter very well, but it’s not Seductress Frost.
Teresa says
They discontinued my favorite pink polish
Aphelia says
I used to love Sally Hansen’s Chrome polishes, I wore the same shade of pink all through high school. Only needed one coat and never chipped, perfect shine. I still miss it ???? It seems every time I find a colour and formula I like, it’s discontinued. Which is very frustrating.
Danielle says
Happy Anniversary!!
Jack Daniels used to have this smokey mustard. I don’t even like mustard, but I couldn’t get enough of this stuff. It’s like the ONLY flavor they discontinued. I am now mustardless again. Such is life ????
Nicole Desson says
I am allergic to some weird stuff, particularly really popular florals. This makes places that sell soaps and body lotions a special kind of nightmare for me. Many of them I can’t even walk past in a mall, and of course perfumes are generally out of the question. But I’m a girl and sometimes I like to smell nice, dammit. Body Shop had a scent for YEARS called White Musk, which I could tolerate on special occasions. Then they brought out Black Musk, which had NOTHING I was allergic to. And I loved the scent. So it was promptly discontinued. (Because it’s also all about me ????)
I share your sadness at the non-existence of Vianetta.
Darleen says
Oh, I loved White Musk! I had White Musk everything!
Retief says
Peppermint Patty ice cream bars were amazing, but I only found out about them once they were on the way out. Sad times.
Kate says
Countless ginger ale brands because sooner or later they all get sweeter and less gingery.
Trader Joe’s used to have a chunky spread called “Two Hearts” that was artichoke hearts and hearts of palm. I used to spread it on plain cheese pizza. delicious! If I had known they were going to discontinue it I would have saved a jar to see the other ingredients because I have tried making it myself and it just isn’t the same.
Beth Colsher says
I miss the ginger soda base from soda stream, it tasted like freshly puréed ginger with a little sugar. If you happen to see it, buy it and I’ll pay you for delivery, etc.
Teresa says
Have you tried Zevia Ginger root beer? I think it tastes like dessert.
MaryK says
Kleinpeter French Onion dip. It was sooo good. I don’t like most pre-made dips. One day it was just … gone. I’ve since decided Kraft jalapeño dip is not bad but it’s still not my French onion.
Siobhan Ordorica Ordorica says
Not sure if it is actually discontinued but Costco used to have this jalapeño greek yogurt dip/spread. It was amazing. They no longer carry it and multiple online searches have been fruitless.

MIA for years:
Sara Lee Orange Iced Sheet Cakes (real orange peel in cake and icing)
Noodles Romanoff, I loved both the Betty Crocker mix and the frozen Stouffer’s
Baskin & Robbins Mandarin Chocolate ice cream
Trader Joe’s English Muffin Bread
HopeT says
OMG, I have been complaining about the loss of Mandarin Chocolate sherbet for years! I did my research– they have no intention of ever bringing back this amazing and irreplaceable dessert (imagine sherbet that is richer than any other, nearly black with chocolate, and redolent of orange. Amazing).
Erika says
Hey, I was just at Trader Joe’s and they had English Muffin Bread!! Quick, run to the store!
Carolyn W. says
I miss Carnation Breakfast bars (Chocolate Chip). There was also a brand of chicken salad (I don’t remember the name) we would buy at the commissary. It wasn’t in the refrigerator section.

Those Carnation Breakfast bars were my husband’s favorite and for years I hunted for them every store I went to. Bummer.
Lori says
Yes, I miss the chocolate crunch ones. Pretty sure that flavor was discontinued by the time I was 10…and I’m now 46 and still miss them!
Rachel says
The chocolate mint Hershey bars. Every once in a while I can find them… and then they are gone again.

Paxo Stuffing, my mom would use it in the dressing for the Christmas and Thanksgiving turkeys.

Happy Silver Anniversary, I’m sorry things are getting to you at the moment. I hope the BF is feeling better soon. Our local food places have managed to survive mostly which I am grateful for.
When I was a teenager my parents used to take us camping in the South of France. Each time we would stop overnight in Burgandy The first meal my Mum would cook us everytime was rice and ‘Ye Olde Oak Chunky Chicken’ from a tin. It was wonderful. It still makes my mouth water. They discontinued it about 20 years ago and I’m still upset about it. Regardless of how often I make chicken in white sauce with rice, it’s never quite as nice

I really miss liquid baking chocolate. Made so many of my family stand-by dessert recipes a breeze. I don’t like melting chocolate and don’t even know what the conversion would be. Sigh.
Tasha says
3 Tbsp oil & 1 Tbsp cocoa powder. I almost never melt chocolate anymore. Too messy (and I wind up tasting it to ‘see if it’s still good!’)

Oops! Other way around per oz substituted (3 tbsp cocoa, 1 tbsp oil!)
Beth Hogan says
So I am pretty sure that we still have vienetta ice cream cake in the uk and in France where I currently live! It is one my favourites! You will have to come visit- maybe if I beg?

Back in the day.. I used Agree shampoo. It was green. It smelled great all day. It made my hair feel so nice, soft and clean. One day it was just gone.. I called family that lived near where it was made and got a last few bottles.. I tried hundreds of shampoos and have never found one that I loved as much as my green Agree shampoo.
We all have days where it is safer to stay away from people. Take a head of cabbage and chop the hell out of it. Make some Angry Fried Cabbage to serve with grilled pork chops. Angry Fried Cabbage is my go to side dish on bad days… hubby just smiles and eats his dinner. (he knows he is safe but that cabbage is dead as fuck)
Lenore says
Omg —angry fried cabbage sounds so good
Buckaroo says
Big sweary cabbage fan here. Can you share the recipe for Angry Fried Cabbage, please? Colorful verbiage would be helpful so I know when that cabbage is truly dead as fuck ????
Elena Linville-Abdo says
Venetta is available again in Texas, but so far I could only find it in Kroeger.

It was an oatmeal and date bar made by one of the major cake maker brands, can’t remember if it was Duncan Hines or Betty Crocker though. I’ve found some similar recipes, but none have matched it yet.
Oh, and Haask Macadamia Nut shampoo and conditioner… made my hair smell like vanilla cake.

I recently found that Smuckers Mosaics jelly was discontinued. Still looking for a replacement.

I get annoyed that I can’t buy the same shoes and jeans. Why do they have to remake shoes and jeans all the time? Like if they sold out in a jiffy, isn’t that a sign that people liked them and would continue to buy them? And why is there no more corduroy.
I had no idea Maurices still existed. I used to go there in Idaho. I loved it especially for the corduroy, but I haven’t been in one for probably 18 years at this point since no where I went in California had one.
I get tee-shirts shirts at Old Navy or Gap. Pretty much only places that fit anymore.
Heather Griffiths says
Testify sister! Stores selling out of things and then never getting them again!! Grrrrr.
Heather Griffiths says
Now, once I find a bra that actually fits and is comfortable, ditto shoes, I buy a dozen at a time.
reeder says
Same. I have backup new jeans because some years, it is all the skinny or bell bottom only or a rotation between the two.
I’m fortunate to stay about the same weight and shape.

Thank you for that little bit about the pandemic not happening on that other Earth. ❤???? May be silly, but it does me good to know that people I love (even though imaginary) will not have to go through this.

My son discovered in grade school that he was allergic — break out in hives, not lactose intolerant — to dairy products. Nuts were forbidden at his school, because of other people’s nut allergies. He hated lunch meats. Trying to find a packable protein that he would eat at school… arrrgh! We tried all of the non-dairy cheeses and all of the non-dairy yogurts in the county. He hated all of them. Except one. He ate that one soy-based yogurt every day for the next three years. It was a small, local company. Their product was good. It became popular. They decided to increase production and borrowed money to do it. Something went wrong with the deal and the whole company went out of business. Aiiiiiieeeee!
Jennifer says
Good news – Viennetta ice cream cakes still exist! I saw them in a Safeway in San Francisco last month (I remember because the friend I was with practically slobbered over it; it’s one of her favorites too.) So it might just be a distribution issue?
check here: https://www.goodhumor.com/us/en/products/cakes/vanilla-viennetta-frozen-dairy-dessert-cake.html
Distribution is my dilemma… My all time favorite cake is Entemann’s frosted banana cake – its moist and has amazing banana frosting with fudge stripes. YUM. But its not available outside the North East. I live on the west coast now and haven’t been able to get my hands on it in over a decade.
Kirsten says
I have never seen this in the Boston area grocery stores. Sounds incredible.
Lauren says
Apparently it’s “seasonal” even in New England…but they don’t say which season!!!
Jo Ann says
Regarding current shortages: I remember the gas shortage in the 70s. (Husband stationed in California.) One night a late night host (Johnny Carson I think) mentioned that the gas lines were to the point that you had to sit in your car for the day (implying you needed to take a lunch box). That got a really big audience laugh. Then he didn’t follow his cue cards and tried to “milk” the audience reaction by stating that he wondered if the “current beef shortage” (which did not really exist) meant that you would have to stand in line at the meat counter as your afternoon exercise. Well it was interesting that the next day my local grocery store had an unexpected line (practically out the front door) by 10 am for the meat counter.
Regarding Covid 19: We are currently in a surge in North Carolina. If it doesn’t get under control soon, the D variant will morph again. I really, really don’t want to think about that.
Kirsten says
Thought of another disappearance that really broke my plus-size career woman heart – Jones New York outlet shops.
The brand disappeared entirely for a while but now you can find some items in department stores. Problem is that they don’t have a plus size line anymore.
I haven’t been able to find trousers that fit as well since.
Susan B says
Oh, I hadn’t realized Jones New York Outlet stores were gone everywhere; I thought it was just the outlet mall I went to last January. Really bummed to hear this; their pants fit me reliably. Sigh.
Kailin says
Not discontinued but only available around Christmas stateside, Terry’s chocolate oranges. They were my favorite thing as a kid and I could have forsaken every other present at Christmas as long as I had the orange. Well, two years ago now I study abroad in Scotland and come to find not only do they have Terry’s year round, there are like a million different versions of it. Individual orange shaped chocolate slices, a bag of mini’s, ones with crunchies inside, etc. I proceeded to buy every Terry’s product I could get my hands on before I left, and now mourn that they are not abundantly available in the states. It has become a high ranking reason on my Pro “moving abroad permanently” list.
BrendaJ says
If this is an option, Amazon carries several varieties of Terry’s chocolate.
Smmoe1997 says
Nestlé Tollhouse chips had a cherry filled chocolate chip, delectables I think. I make a meringue cookie that has chocolate chips in it. Sometimes I substitute other flavors of chips (Andes mints, crushed peppermints, etc.), my favorite substitution was the cherry filled chips. They made the entire meringue cookie taste like a chocolate covered cherry, but with a crunchy and melty texture. I loved them! They were only available for maybe 2 Christmas seasons. I would buy them in bulk, they were small packages, maybe half the size of regular chip packages, and more expensive, but I didn’t care, to me they were totally worth it. I’m still unhappy that they are no longer available and it’s been maybe 4 or 5 years since I’ve seen them.
I still haven’t found a good substitute for those chips. If I could find cherry flavored chip, maybe mixing them with the chocolate chips might work, but I haven’t been able to find cherry chips either. **sigh** I’m going to have to start experimenting with flavorings and see if I can get the balances right, which is not my favorite thing.
There are other products like dove’s fragrance free deodorant that I miss, but none more than those delectables chips. I still check every Christmas, just in case they start making them again. Hope springs eternal, I guess.
Smmoe1997 says
And I totally for get this yesterday, but Pace had a garlic lime verde that went perfectly with my homemade pork fajitas. Regular salsa verde just doesn’t do the trick.
And seasonal thing, peppermint ice cream is only (occasionally) available at Christmas, and I always crave it in the dog days of July and August. This year I bought an ice cream maker to make my own. First batch was ok but I’m continuing to experiment to find the perfect one. I also plan on making lemon and cheesecake ice cream flavors because the cheesecake ice cream in the stores always have chunks of graham crackers which I don’t like.
Leslie says
Peppermint ice cream is my favorite flavor and only one company in my area produces it around Christmas, Nov to Jan at the latest. I got hooked on it in college where once a year as a special treat, one piece per person, the college kitchen would make peppermint fudge pie; dark chocolate cookie crust, fudge layer, peppermint ice cream, whipped cream. Soo amazing!
Angie says
I have lived in Switzerland for about 31 years. When I first came here you couldn’t really get anything but a few (very expensive) items in one or two specialty stores. In the last 15 years or so we can get more and more products and thanks to internet and on-line stores we can purchase most everything we “lust” after. One of the ice-creams I miss the most from here was something like an Orangesicle (vanilla ice-cream on the inside and an orange popsicle kind of thing on the outside). These have been discontinued for about 5 or 6 years and they were my favorite.
The Viennetta Ice Cream cake you can get here in Switzerland!

Discontinued and reformulated items are one of my least favorite things in the world. Yes, yes, most stuff is replaceable with maybe a bit of railing at the Universe and bemoaning my fate. Quality OTC products I use for medical conditions? Not so much. In the last three years, I lost the only pain/massage lotion that actually worked (Tei Fu, now reformulated and useless), the only energy booster that adequately combatted autoimmune fatigue & settled my ADHD down to a place where I could focus (Muse, by Toniq), and my favorite Shiseido Senka sunscreen from Japan.
Of those, no remotely adequate sub for the pain lotion has shown up, I’ve partly replicated the energy pills by buying some of the ingredients individually, and rediscovered how much I loathe Western sunscreens.
Sigh.
Also, why does no one make root beer popsicles anymore?
Valerie says
YES!! Root beer popsicles! They got me through the hot days with cool, frosty loveliness. I look everywhere. Twenty million brands and they are all the same fruit flavors. Don’t want fruit. Want root beer.
karen says
Also white lemon popsicles -haven’t seen those in years either!

Trader Joe’s discontinued their orange marmalade this spring. It was zingy and not too sweet. I am sad.
Several years ago Pine Sol stopped making Pine Sol with pine oil. Now it stinks. For a while Publix had a generic pine oil cleaner, but that’s gone too.
Ginger says
I’m so sad about that marmalade. It was amazing, I haven’t found a good bitter orange marmalade substitute yet….
Vince says
I hate the smell of Pine Sol now! It doesn’t smell remotely like pine. I use King’s concentrated pine oil cleaner now as it’s the closest I’ve been able to find.

It’s not food but my favorite sports bra was discontinued and ‘replaced’ with one that cost $20 more. It was already $50… $70 is highway robbery.
LucyQ says
Don’t get me started on bras. I try to stock up when I find one I actually like, but it’s a lotta money up front. I am some sort of weird half size that is between two uncommon sizes, so it’s terrible finding even one that I like.

Banana Boats. How I miss them. They were these little Hostess cakes back in the ‘70s. The cake was a banana bread cake, with a banana whipped cream frosting on top, with little banana crumbs on top. So yummy. No replacements.
Dixie M McIlwraith says
I have moved often, Canada, the US and Costa Rica, so I become used to finding something I love in one place and never seeing it again. There was a coffee flavored candy bar popular in Canada but they don’t see it elsewhere. But in Vancouver, a very diverse city, I discovered both Ginger and Green Tea ice cream in the Asian groceries. I have occasionally found a green tea mochi in Trader Joes {though there is no TJ in Costa Rica} but I would likely gibber with excitement if I found Ginger.

I miss butter rum life savers, Pearson’s nut rolls, flavored coffee syrups such as hazelnut, Campbells Chunky soup stroganoff flavor, and butter brickle ice cream.
HeatherR says
YES to Butter Rum Life Savers! I miss them so much. Found them in a random little shop in Burbank, CA and bought all the rolls left in a case (like 5 left? 8? I wish there had been more). I think the cashier thought I was nuts. Pretty sure that case had to be expired, but I didn’t care!
Heather Griffiths says
Me again. Just remembered, here in Ecuador where I live, you can’t get Friskies cat treats, which are the only ones one of my two Canadian cats will eat. So I order them online and have a mule carry them in for me. Expensive (my cats’ expenses are equal to my own food). But hey. Our cats, am I right?

Apparently when Lucille Ball died she had a garage filled with her signature red henna. Years earlier the word had gone out that her colour was discontinued, so everyone ransacked their local shops and sent her everything they could find.
I learned about Schweppes Bitter Lemon overseas, loved it and it’s very rare here in Canada. Also miss the Cross&Blackwell Boston brown bread in a can.
And Pear’s soap! They still make it, but about 10 years ago it went from abt 5 ingredients to abt 15, mostly chemical.
Vermontcountrystore.com has a fun section called Brands from the past. Tangee lipstick anyone?
Chris G says
I remember that lipstick! They also have Gee Your Hair Smells Terrific shampoo and Lemon Up shampoo, but the reviews say they aren’t the same scents as the original. Sigh, sometimes when they redo products they are just a poor imitation.

Mellow Yellow zero can’t buy it anywhere around me anymore. Oh yes I tried mellow yellow and funyums can’t imagine where I got that from. Sneakers why do they need to change them every year when you find a comfortable pair?
Congratulations on 25 years that’s a real accomplishment.
K.L. Reese says
It’s not just food. A few years back I found the absolutely perfect walking shoe with just a bit of a rocking heel. Heavenly! When I went back to get a replacement pair–yup, discontinued. And now, the whole entire store has vanished into on-line purgatory. Moral of the story: I found a pair of sandals that I loved so I bought 6 pair in different colors–take THAT shoe store!
K. Koltzau says
I loved Vianetta. The old Sunkist fruit snacks. A lot of Keebler chips. The pizza ones especially. There was a candle outlet by my grandmother in Leesburg. I would go every time I visited and get enough to last six months. They closed just before I. Is it’s a few years ago and I think I actually cried tears of rage. My grandmother never actually lights her candles so she patted my arm and tried to understand. And yes. I love a lot of the geeky tees at shows and I always have to ask about women’s sizing and if it’s junior or a true woman’s size. They unhelpfully point to the unisex tees that immediately make me look like I have no neck and a twenty pound weight gain in my middle. Blech. The one company I could always count on was Off World Designs. And covid killed them. They are clearancing out their designs. Blergh.
Just as an FYI, my mom and I got covid after vaccination. I was very, very sick, it was the main strain, not delta. For us, the vaccine helped us fight covid, not prevent it. I’m very grateful, because I likely would have died without it. I have asthma, and an immune disorder. I hope everyone stays safe however they can.

There are several items the loss of which I was recently bemoaning. But when I try to think of them now,,,, eh.
Here is my big Yankee Candle issue:
I remember when you used to be able to buy candles, JUST candles, at Yankee Candle. Not only votives but a variety of pillars and 3 wicks, etc. And you could then use use your own holder, of which I have many. No more. You could often find some at Pier One – closed. I’ve found a few at Michaels, World Market and Target. And I have no place to store and no need/desire to repurpose empty glass candle jars. I know a few people with home candle making businesses but I also know the containers and decor are where they make their money. Not with the wax. So????????♀️

Viennetta Ice Cream cake! I used to love that.
I’m still bitter over the fact that Cacique discontinued my favorite bra. I’m a G/H cup and it was the only one that fit . I would buy them in batches like clockwork at every biannual sale. (I’m brutally hard on bras.) You’d think that they would notice and maybe email me and say “You buy this a lot. We’re about to discontinue it. Want to stock up?” I would have bought two dozen, I swear.
That said, Levi discontinued my fave jeans a few years ago, which caused me to try different styles and the one I found eventually actually fits better.

Carbonated Snapple drinks and Clearly Canadian. They brought back Clearly Canadian recently; I was so excited! I bought one of my favorite Black Cherry, despite the exorbitant cost ($3.00 at the grocery store!), and decided to save it for a reward. And non-covid, I want Angel Soft 3 ply toilet paper and vanilla fudge Poptarts back. And Walmart’s thin plus size jeggings.

When I grew up, there was a dessert called the Arctic Roll. It’s a Swiss Roll that’s wrapped around ice cream that was my absolute favorite. There was a tiniest bit of raspberry jam that lined the Swiss roll then in the center vanilla ice cream that tasted in my opinion a bit mango-ey. It disappeared one day, no notice no nothing when I was in my teens.

Try Native! Very first time I ventured into grownup world, was to buy my favourite cosmetic item that I was almost out of, a luxury purchase of a lovely deep red, velvety Dior lipstick. Department store was unable to provide a replacement. “That shade was discontinued, perhaps this other one or would you consider a different brand?” said helpful counter clerk. Six months, that was the the lifespan of a lipstick. This was decades ago and I know now the turnover time is much swifter. I have honey coloured hair – a kind of dark blonde with a lot of gold and red tones in it – but in the summer it goes almost white on the top and around my face. Which is great, natural highlights and all, but then when winter comes I end up with these dark blonde ‘roots’ that suddenly make it look like I maybe didn’t wash my hair. And I hate that. I used to spend money every year getting highlights every other month from November through to April, just so that I wouldn’t look like I didn’t bother to shower. But I hated it: the time, the expense, the stupidity of the whole process, especially when the hair stylist would decide to ‘change up’ the colour and I’d have to fix it. Eugh. Then I found this John Frieda ‘Go Blonder’ product that you could shampoo in during your shower – you left it just on the roots for five or ten minutes and it blended the darker blonde into a lighter tone that I could live with. For two years, I did not have to visit a hair stylist except to get the ends chopped off twice a year. I would just use the ‘Go Blonder’ stuff every six weeks until summer came again and was, literally, golden. And then they discontinued it. They didn’t even *announce* they were discontinuing it, so by the time I realised what was happening it was gone everywhere and the few remaining ones were selling on eBay for silly money. I’ve decided I will just wear my hair in a braid all winter long. I can’t go back to sitting in foils for all that time, even if I can afford it now as a poor PhD student. Maybe no one will notice. *Sigh*

I drink iced black tea (no lemon, no sugar) several times a day year round. Nestle used to make a powder – no more. Nothing can compare to the old A&W Root Beer that they used to make fresh, on-site at the old A&W drive-ins (like Sonic, but before Sonic, I think). They used to serve them in a glass mug out of the freezer. It would cause it to frost over with a layer of root beer ice floating on top. I haven’t had it since I was a kid, and that was A LONG time ago. They say the A&W places are making it fresh on-site again. I have not found this elusive treat myself, though.
Caz says
Yessss. My oldest brother used to ride to the A&W root beer stand, with me sitting on his bicycle handlebars. I was young enough to get a free baby mug of frosty root beer. He would hover over me, afraid I’d drop the mug, which was glass. I’ve been a fan of A&W ever since because of the added vanilla. But lately the A&W root beer containers don’t say that they include vanilla. Such a bummer.

Dear Ilona,

I 100% relate to the pain of discontinued products and good stores for plus-sized women.
I loved Viennetta Ice Cream Cake. I loved the Taco Flavored Doritos from the late ‘70’s (not the new original taco flavor – they’re lying).
I can sadly relate to the pandemic related issues. New Yorkers went through that last Spring and many surviving businesses are still struggling. Supply chain issues seem never ending. I too dislike clothes shopping on line for plus-sized clothing.
Thank heavens we have a large percentage of vaccinated people here. It’s the only thing keeping us heading forward (slowly but surely) on the road to economic recovery.
It would be interesting to know how many people we know wouldn’t exist today if their ancestors hadn’t gotten vaccines for horrible illnesses like small pox and measles. I’m grateful my ancestors were brave enough, just as I’m in awe of those who survived before vaccines.

Treets are not made anymore. Caramel was my favourite. Caramel M&Ms are impossible to find in the UK or Ireland. It has to be chewy caramel. It’s a good thing as I have gone vegan.
Sorry, there is Vienetta galore and I agree it was so good to eat. I make my own soft serve in a high speed blender. Solo fruit or selection of fruits with a frozen banana (or ice) and a dash of plant milk. Can use a date or two for sweetness depending on the fruit.

My favorite food as a kid was Ding Dongs. The individually wrapped foil shapes was a cause for magical moments! I even wrote an exercise paper on Ding Dongs. You know the kind that has huge lines with dashes and a space for drawing on top where I completed my tour de force: “I love Ding Dongs. I eat Ding Dongs.” with an illustration of something eating a vaguely ding-dong shaped item being eaten by a stick figure.
At one point Ding Dongs were discontinued. Then they were brought back. Gone were the individually wrapped foil pieces of magic. The new incarnations were wrapped in plastic! Not the same at all!!

I have a lot of food sensitivities and allergies, so it’s had to find things I can eat that I like. Around 6 months ago we were looking to stock up our supply of Red River cereal. Couldn’t find it anywhere. I checked online, it has been discontinued. ???? Bulk Barn has their own version called 7 grain, but it says may contain nuts. I am allergic to nuts.

My husband is allergic to peanuts (but not soy nuts) and tree nuts (except almonds). Hazelnut hidden in chocolate is emergency room time! Believe me, I know exactly what you’re going through! And now, with safety messages so numerous (and companies CYA) you never know when something says MAY contain nuts whether it actually does or not! My husband finally realized the reason he sometimes had troubles with M&Ms was they made peanut M&Ms in the same facility as the plain, and sometimes some of the peanut dust got into the chocolate. Now he just avoids them all because it’s not worth the risk.

Too often do I fall for something and less than a year later it gets discontinued. When I gush to my mother about some new product or food, she “jokes” that I should buy it in bulk and store it because it’ll be discontinued. Oh, man, I remember how sad I was when our Maurice’s went under. There’s a Torrid about an hour away that I go to when I’m desperate, because every time I mail-order from anywhere there’s a 50/50 chance I won’t get around to returning “meh” stuff because of the hassle.

Moving to Austria from the US was a grocery shock. I’m told Germany (at least the part of Germany that was West Germany) has better grocery stores, but Austria…
One of my German teachers spoke of visiting the US, going to a grocery store and being STUNNED that there was almost *an entire aisle* of pasta sauce. “Who needs that many different pasta sauces?” he asked me.
Who DOESN’T? I think. There are three brands of pasta sauce. Felix (Austrian brand), Barilla (European brand), and the store brand. At the fancy gourmet groceries there might be one or two others, but at one of the regular grocery stores, the ones every few blocks? That’s it. And those brands all together have 5 flavors — Bolognese, Neopolitana, Arrabiata, Basil, and Pesto.
I’m using pasta sauce as an example, but it’s representative. I have to go to one of the huge one-per-district grocery stores for ground coriander seed or cilantro*. All sausage is hard sausage. Forget anything like “hot Italian” or “Mexican chorizo” (Spanish chorizo is hard). For deli, either it’s a pork product or it’s absolutely crap — the deli turkey, chicken, and (mostly) roast beef lives down to the lunch Ilona described** in another post (IOW, the US grocery deli turkey of *cough* years ago, or the non-Boar’s Head (I’m told there are other, comparable brands now) of today.
So I make my own fresh sausage now. While I had a functional meat grinder***, I ground the lean and fat together myself (they sell both fresh pork fat in cubes and rendered pork fat in tubs), but since it broke, I’ve been just buying, seasoning, and freezing ground pork.
I also now sometimes buy a turkey breast (or beef roast) and roast it, and cut it up for sandwiches, but not often, because it’s a lot for even two people, and my husband definitely does not eat his share, as his cultural acclimation toward sandwich meat is hard sausage.
I also use my own seasoning now for burgers instead of starting with Lipton Onion Soup mix. And although my beloved teases me by telling me his mother used to make her own mayo (and I do know it’s easy enough in the food processor), I refused to give in on mayonnaise and order Hellmann’s from Amazon (the mayo here is at the Miracle Whip end of the spectrum, which is great for creamy green-salad dressings, but I am a Hellmann’s girl for sandwiches and tuna/chicken salad).
KH: my mother made her own mayonnaise. You could do that.
Me: I don’t know where to find the Polysorbate 80 or the Xantham Gum.
Siobhan says
*yes, I know these are the same plant, but current US convention uses coriander for the seeds and cilantro for the leaves.
**Actually, the turkey she described sounds good by comparison to what’s here.
***after a couple of unwise investments into kitchen gadgets I never used, I started buying super cheap versions, and if I used them, I would upgrade. So I bought a knock-off Kitchenaid stand mixer that came with all of the attachments. I used the meat grinder until I blew the motor, and none of the other pieces, even the mixing bowl, since I had those covered between the food processor, stand mixer, and hand mixer. So I will, at some point, invest in a good meat grinder. After the other things on the list are bought, like the couch for the still-full-of-packed-boxes-because-we-don’t-have-furniture-yet den.

I have Celiac Disease, so I must eat gluten free. I once found gluten free ice cream sandwiches, which were something I super missed. After only a couple blissful months of binging, they were gone. This happens a lot with gf replacements for junk food.
HeatherR says
YES! Also gluten free and so sad I can’t find the gf ice cream sandwiches any more either. And the delicious strawberry shortcake I bought for years is now gone from Ralphs/Kroger (company must have folded under the pandemic I think) and their chocolate cream cake too. Sigh.

So many: Coffee Cream Peek Freen cookies, Ihle’s Paste diaper rash cream, Dove deodorant for sensitive skin, Baby’s Own soap, Ozonal ointment, President’s Choice Memories of Kobe Tamarind Garlic Sauce. I could go on and on. The only thing I’ve found better is Live Clean deodorant.

Decent pockets, that things don’t fall out of, in pants and shorts. Also, low-rise pants fit me better than any other kind, due to scoliosis which makes my waist asymmetrical. High-waisted pants are fiendishly uncomfortable for me. The less said about bras, the better. I have learned to buy multiples of any daily clothing item that works well for me, because sooner or later it will go out of fashion and I won’t be able to find anything like it again for twenty years.

I hate jeans shopping. Once upon a time, I bought a pair of jeans, and the first time I wore them was a revelation. They fit perfectly, they made my butt look really good, they had useful pockets. When I got off work that day I went straight back to the store and bought five more pairs — 2 black, 2 the same standard jeans color as the first, 1 a lighter denim. That was 7 years ago, and I still have them and wear them. And with luck, it’ll be another decade before I have to go jeans shopping again.
Tl;dr: I hear you.

McCormick used to have a wonderful TexMex seasoning. I loved it. When it disappeared from all the grocery stores, I called McCormick to ask where I could buy it, I was offered Taco seasoning. After explaining that the flavor was very different (how could they not know that?), I was referred to a location to purchase it in restaurant supply size. The order kept me supplied for another 3 years. Who knew the bottles would be so big? I kept the last bottle and using the ingredients list I have continued, sort of, recreating the spice. Sometimes I get the ratios better than others but at least it’s close.

Kraft American Chesse, it was the same stuff from their mac&chesse. It came in a blue tube (their parm comes in green). I loved it, could make chessey popcorn, add more cheesy goodness to the mac&chesse. Haven’t been able to find it since the mid 90s.

they did bring it back in a clear container currently, same size as parm. Not the same, just buy box and take out packet to use.

Lipton used to make tea bags that were honey lemon. They were wonderful when I had a sore throat. I have one box left that I’m hoarding.
Red Rose tea had a Streusel decaf tea that I loved before going to bed. That’s long gone.
Decent fabric for making clothes is hard to find or very, very expensive. So many things gone.
That said, I still have great friends, my family is doing well (and vaccinated) and I still have a job that is now permanently work from home. I also have a great fabric/yarn/embroidery small business 5 miles from my little home town.
There are still many things to be thankful for.

I think I will swim against the tide here. When something is discontinued, I often find that I like the thing that replaces it better than the original thing. Except for New Coke. But hey, they got rid of it and now I don’t drink soft drinks anyway. If I don’t like the replacement, I try to find another different favorite thing. When they stopped making my favorite pants, after my tantrum, I realized I don’t wear pants anymore anyway. So I bought these great sweatpants and leggings (which look stupid on me at my age, but they are so comfortable and there’s no one to see except hubby and he doesn’t care). Why do things go away? Because entropy rules. That’s the universe for you. You got to roll with it. Until entropy rolls you away.

Down here in Brazil, the only thing we have from Lipton is sweet lemon/peach tea. My apologies for thinking so low of you.

OMG I feel for you. I HATE when that happens to me. And it happens a lot. Monster Munch (my favorite potatoe chip thingies) – discontinued. YES Lemon – discontinued. A whole other bunch of sweets – discontinued never to be seen again. I have a thing for Fanta Limon (the spanish version – which obviously you only get in Spain) – which is my guilty pleasure whenever we are on vacation (but COVID…)
The last thing that I really love has been a bath foam from The Salt House…I bought the last two remaining bottles for a ridiculus price and now only indulge on special occasions to make those bottles last.
I don’t really need a supermarket with 30 brands of everything because if I like something it surely will not last. So at least with food stuff I try to make most things myself.

what really ticks me off is ….is the lack of,
Maple Frango Ice Cream, the most heavenly creamy and delicious ice cream ever made anywhere!
When I was a child , my Mother would take my brother and myself down town Seattle to the big Frederic and Nelson Department Store, and in their restaurant , up several floors had lovely crisp white linens, on the tables the plates looked to me as a child like heavy silver all misted with frost as they served this creamy , cold textured Maple Frango on a plate with a fork…The Maple Frango was very thick as it melted nearly like whipping cream, the real stuff ,it forked in flakes as it all had , when frozen, a flaky texture , so good …
OMG , I am now 7O and I have looked for years , but its gone…
The store was bought out my Chicago Marshal Fields, when I was in my late 20s and the Maple delight of my youth , was gone….talk about a betrayal…
The only other food was a special Chocolate I ate for one year again as a child of 9 in Salzburg Austria.
I was in Austria while my Mom took violin lesson from a-noted instructor of the day around 1959 / 1960
My brother and I would wonder down the cobblestone streets when not in school,
To a very tiney chocolate shop not dissimilar in size to a small Espresso stands in Washington everywhere these days. John and I would go in , and for two shillings, about 8 cents US, again this was 1959, we would get a marvelous creamy milk chocolate nut bar wrapped in waxed paper…freshly made still a little soft.
When I returned to Salzburg 30 years later, I look and looked but the store was gone…
So two of my tales of missed edible delights…
Ps you can often find good plus size tees at Sierra Trading Post which is my fav place ….on line…check it out, easy returns….super prices…

For a while the Betty Crocker Rainbow Chip cake mix and frosting were discontinued, but they made a comeback (don’t come at me about funfetti they are not the same thing). And starbucks had this Teavana flavor called Youthberry that I liked. I’m not a big tea drinker or a fancy starbucks drink person, but I liked this when I was pregnant because it was not caffeinated and didn’t have a bunch of sugar, but had a light sweet fruity flavor. They stopped selling it. I tried buying the tea and making it myself but it’s not as good. I’ve also had a lot of make-up products I liked be discontinued, and that’s always disappointing right when you find the perfect shade.

Many years ago, when we were in our twenties, my sister turned me on to Postum. It was a powder that when added to water (hot usually) yielded a fantastic, slightly sweet toasted grain delight. It satisfied in so many ways and helped keep me from vacuously snacking away in the evenings. Sadly, Kraft foods discontinued it and I have missed it ever since. But this post prompted me to do an internet search and I discovered the recipe has been sold to another company and I can get it again! Hallelujah! I will no longer have to settle for Pero which is a poor substitute for the delight that is Postum! Thank you, thank you for the Postum resurrection discovery!

We’ve had “product discontinued” mini-crises so many times over the years, they just aren’t more than a simple “oh, crap” moment any more. But rather surprisingly, few Covid-related closings have affected us. Hair salons and favorite restaurants are still going; those restaurants that are nearby and do carry-out get a lot of our business. Clothes are all online purchases or Goodwill, but Goodwill has been going downhill for years. I work from home. So we are mostly OK.
We have discovered Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream. It is the best ice cream ever, with no additives of any kind. We highly recommend Salted Caramel, as well as Darkest Chocolate.

I’m sorry about your back. If you can find the masseuse/masseur who used to do your massage, they may still be working in the area, perhaps privately, and might even make house calls. The other thing is that an adjustable sit-to-stand desk. My daughter finds that hers really helps, and she even has a slow-walk treadmill to go with it, for when it’s in standing mode. I too am a plus-size woman, and I buy Supima cotton t-shirts in many styles and beautiful colors from L.L.Bean. Lovely soft fabric, good fit, keep their size and color well despite many washings. No snarky sayings on them, but they make me happy anyway. I have nothing to offer regarding discontinued foods, but I do understand your outrage. They discontinued Rye Crisp crackers, which I loved. A few things I only discovered right before they were discontinued. Vidal Sassoon shampoo, discontinued except if you had access to markets in certain Asian countries, then it came back, then it discontinued again. This Oreo brownie that was puffy and soft and delicious and only was distributed through this one restaurant that disappeared and I never found that Oreo brownie again, though other Oreo brownies/things appeared in super markets, none were THIS Oreo brownie. Also Jergens had this cherry almond body wash that was so rich and creamy that they discontinued about 30 years ago. Lastly, all of the stores around Houston quit carrying Kleenex anti-viral tissue. They are soft and extra thick, simply the best. I can still get them on line but I have to buy a case at a time. Do you know how long it takes a single woman to go through 68 boxes of Kleenex? I have Reverware copper-bottomed pans. I always used Copper Glo. It’s no longer made. I switched to Twinkle and it was instantly taken off all store shelves around here, so I got angry and order it in cases from the company that makes it now.
My dishwasher cleaner was taken from store shelves, also. When I run out, it’ll be back to vinegar, which I hate to use because it’s acid, but at least it’s in stores.
The apricot nectar that supplied me with the potassium I needed so I didn’t have to suffer the nausea of taking the pills that made me so sick is no longer sold at the one store that carried it. I ordered it from the people who make it, a full case, and had to pay shipping to get it to me, but I will avoid the pills that way.
Very puzzling to me, and Purina has vowed to me that they are producing, but their cat foods disappeared from the shelves for months. Anyone with a cat knows what finicky eating means, so it’s been a struggle to get them fed. One will eat anything, the other will not. Good times.

Our best-ever buffet restaurant closed for Covid and won’t be opening again. Until this recent surge, I was seriously considering maybe going out to eat. Won’t happen now, and I miss going out to eat. Carryout is good, but it’s not eating out.
But the heart-breaker is that the Symphony bars I love so well are now very thin and much smaller than they were last year. Nothing soothes this savage beast like that chocolate, and it’s skimpy now.

Has anyone ever had a salesperson tell you something has been discontinued as if you were a Neanderthal who just left the cave since everyone else already knows this? I crept away from the Clinique counter.
Susan says
I have noticed that the selection of Purina Friskies canned cat food has been varied… a person at Walmart said they have been producing, but due to COVID, it has been more of a challenge. There are often only a few flavors or kinds offered, so I often will look to see what there is and stock up if it is a flavor and type (must be pâté) our two cats like. I sometimes find it at grocery or pet stores, but with a higher price tag.
As for smaller amounts, that has happened with so many things which sometimes adds a challenge with recipes since the amounts are not the same with many products like a no bake pumpkin pie… I have to buy more canned pumpkin since the amount in the can is less than the recipe. So many things… sugar, yogurt, ice cream, cookies… have less than in the past, but still charge more. Really noticed how Girl Scout cookies have way fewer cookies in the box yet cost more so a double whammy!

Congratulations on your anniversary. I hope someday I will be able to say I was married that long.
Covid is bad here in Wisconsin too and I am going grocery/supply shopping tomorrow because who knows when we might shut down again. We went from close to zero cases a day to 1000 new cases per day. This makes me slightly freaked out since I cannot get the vaccine (I am very allergic to one of its ingredients) and I have had covid before and do not want to repeat the experience.
nrml says
I, too, am allergic to the PEG in the “big two” vaccines, but J&J has zero PEG and I got that within three days of it hitting our area because nobody else wanted it because it’s wasn’t hyped like mad as the latest greatest type of vaccine. No stats on how it does because for some reason, this country is ignoring the only vaccine available that would not kill me. One woman in this area got the one with PEG in it and she spent months getting all her dead skin scrubbed off and bandaged to prevent infection and more skin died and it was a royal mess. She is 90 years old and suffering horribly. They stopped the J&J because something like 7 people got blood clots, but she was the 17th in the country to get that from PEG, and they never warned anyone or stopped giving them to everyone they could give them to. I had to figure out my allergy to it by trying to find makeup I could wear, but even hypo-allergenic makeup contains it. Talk to your doctor about it. With enough prep, you can have a vaccine.
My husband and I have been married for 46 years, and I’ll tell you that the big secret way to be married a long time is to stay married and let the years roll by. I wish you well with that. We chose the right people to marry. I hope you can do the same. When it’s right, you fight now and then, but you stay together.

I lived in SE Asia during the 80s and, back then, was not able to get cotton candy, soft ice cream, red licorice nor soft caramels. I remember one year a member of the PTA brought a suitcase of Kraft caramels from the US to make caramel apples for a school event.

The big discontinue during Covid that affected me was the Vitamin E cream from Sam’s (Gene Therapy, I think is the name). I don’t shop at Sam’s, so as I was getting low I asked a friend to pick some up– not there. She checked all over town– none. Weird. Did an Internet search– EVERYONE is looking for it. Ebay has a jar for $100US (it retailed for $6.99US normally)!!! More research: apparently the owner of the company decided to take a sabbatical to ride horses. Understandable in these uncertain times, but the freak out is amazing. Given that it doesn’t cause a reaction in my terribly sensitive skin, doesn’t smell girly (my husband likes to use it during cold weather), and is very reasonable I guess I understand. I was upset. So, my friend’s boyfriend went to California to visit his elderly mom and decided to look around for the cream. Turns out his mother had horded several jars, so he brought me back one. I don’t know if I will find a substitute or if the owner will reopen. We’ll see.

Yeah. At our house the joke is “How can you tell if something is going to be discontinued in the next six weeks? Ask Mom if she likes it.”
It doesn’t matter if it’s food, clothing, furniture, paint colors, dishes, or restaurants. If I decide I REALLY LOVE it, it’s doomed.
I try not to REALLY LOVE things because of this. I also try to have back ups for my back ups. It doesn’t help my control over my hoarding tendencies ????
Mostly I complain for weeks or months and then grudgingly get used to the substitute. And eventually mostly forget about the original unless something reminds me, at which time I grumble and complain for another few hours.
What can I say, I’m an ISFJ, we like our routine! ????

For a while, Triscuit crackers had a caraway and rye combination. So tasty. It was made with real ingredients. They’ve since discontinued it. Ugg. So many things but the ones that came to mind immediately are my 2 favorite flavors of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. Hazed and Confused was half chocolate ice cream, half very light, delicate hazelnut ice cream, and an amazing, rich hazelnut fudge core. The other was Volun-tiramisu. It was exclusive to Target and they were sold out of it more often than not so I don’t know why they would discontinue it.
The thing I’m mad about right now is not something that is discontinued but has been repackaged. Ghirardelli makes these fantastic mug brownies that are just the right size and actually taste good unlike every other mug cake I have tried. Up until a few weeks ago they were available in boxes with 4 packets usually around $3. They got rid of the boxes of packets and now you can get an individual cardboard cup for $2. I bought up the boxes they had in my local store and bought some more off of Amazon but it is going to suck when they are gone. I don’t want to pay more than twice as much for my brownies.

For me, it was, or is, Newcastle Werewolf beer. Probably not the correct name, but it had a werewolf on the label. It was sort of seasonal to Halloween, but I haven’t seen it since we moved down here. Does anybody know if they still sell it in the States? I would drive Smokey and the Bandit style to get some and bring it back to Texas.

Rev ur engines. On the “Uncrate” website, there is info on a Newcastle Werewolf beer”Blood Red Ale”. Not sure if this is what ur looking for, but it looks like u can buy online.

‘I wish they brought back the series “Firefly” – that was an amazing series; and I watched it over and over again and lamented its demise.
Tower Records, independent bookstores – I am infuriated by Amazon that made life hell for many independent bookstores in the early 2000s and now they are setting up brick and mortar shops left and right! Amazon Fresh, Whole foods, Amazon Bookstore — where I live – about 5 Amazon shops sprouted within 12 months – taking over empty spaces by businesses that succumbed to the pandemic or Amazon-business tactics –
There are no substitute for Firefly, but now I am watching – Home Before Dark on Apple TV and I love the new PBS series with Ben Miller based on a Dutch series with the same name – Professor T. I try to visit and shop the few remaining independent bookstores when I travel on my mini-breaks around the state – Washington – so I can help in a small way keep them up and running.

Alas and alack, when Firefly ended, so many people complained at unfinished business in it that they made a movie called “Serenity” to show how it all ended. I still quote the show when I tell people that I live “at the corner of no and where” in BFE when they ask how to get to my house. It was just too good for TV, I guess.

I haven’t eaten Viennetta for a while and I’m not from the US either, but according to wikipedia, it ‘was re-introduced in the US in 2021 under the Good Humor brand’. So maybe you can find it under another name?
And yes, lots of things I enjoyed have been cancelled, including fine salad sauces and ice creams. And right now I’m really worried about our restaurants and shops due to several long lockdowns and another looming ahead, anything relating to culture has been even worse off.

I feel like August has become the cold shower to the kindling of hope I’d started to feel in late June. I’ve been slowly stuffing my closet again with cleaning products and toilet paper. This will probably become a lingering habit rooted in deep-seated fear of broken supply chains.
I adore and miss Vienetta, too. It was our go-to treat when treats were cost prohibitive. A measly substitute available in Texas is Kroger’s semi-sweet chocolate chip ice cream. It is a vanilla (sweet cream-esque) ice cream with shaved semi-sweet chocolate. It doesn’t have the “frosting” but I find that a squirt of store-brand whipped cream makes it a viable substitute.

Goo goo cluster ice cream my fav gone when I was a kid….. I also get mad when they start using chemicals in my food without warning. I react horribly to fake sugars and so I have to cherry pick brands and items so I don’t have to be an OCD label reader as seriously no one has time for that…. When I then get horribly sick and end up in the hospital, i have to figure out what brand betrayed me it’s annoying.

You know, sea salt triggers my seafood allergy, and I had to change many brands I buy because they all say, “Now with Sea Salt!” as if anyone gives a hoot about dried up sea creature pieces and wants them in their salt! I read every label of every new food I think I might want, because the allergic reactions very bad. Fake sugars have been on that list for years on end. If the label hints that the formula has changed, I read the whole label, and people stare at me in stores as I do it. Too bad. I’ve done it for years, and it works, so that’s how life goes. Make time for it.

My mom used to make a four layer cake with a powdered cocoa icing that she mixed with whipped cream for the in between chocolate cake layers and then made the icing out of to put on top and drizzle down the sides. Vienetta ice cream cake was awesome! We had that so much when I was growing up!

Also Van de Kamp’s sugar cookies.
And going waaaaay back, if you lived in Southern California in the 1960s, you’ll remember Helm’s Bakery, which delivered house-to-house. I remember my mom putting a big “H” sign up in the window if she wanted the Helm’s delivery man (and it was always a man) to stop. And they made the most delicious cinnamon bread! Sigh!

Happy Anniversary!! 25 years is such a milestone. I’m glad you were able to spend it with one another.
I live in your area and cried when Maurices and Lane Bryant closed at the outlets! They had the best selection and I too love to try on lol
Thankfully, Torrid next to Hot Topic has since opened and they have great selection! If you want to brave the insanity of the parking lot and construction going on right now, I would totally try them if you haven’t yet. They will even order online and hold something you like if they don’t have your size in store.
Kimberly Johnson says
The discontinued items that I miss are all material. I can’t really say there’s any food items that I miss.
I have coarse, frizzy, curly hair. Bath & Body Works made a hair care line when I was in high school and they had one product called Curl on Cue (there was a shampoo and conditioner) that made my hair feel and look amazing. They discontinued that after about maybe four years. I remember going with my mom to the two closest stores and buying as much of it as we could, even the small travel-size bottles. Fast forward 12 years later, and the product that has come the closest is the OGX Coconut Curls shampoo and conditioner.
Another hair care related item, the brand Aussie makes a sprunch hairspray. It used to come and either an aerosol can or a manual pump bottle and it was a flexible hold hairspray that didn’t make your hair super sticky and kind of helped with the frizz. About three years ago Aussie discontinued the aerosol can, and while the manual pump bottle was the same formula it just didn’t sit in your hair the same because it didn’t spray across as evenly. Earlier this year I went to buy a bottle and they have completely changed the formula to now make it a firmer hold hairspray. I used it once and it made my hair a sticky disaster. I still have not been able to find a replacement that held my hair is nicely as the aerosol can spray did.
The one place I really miss that closed about two years ago is Payless Shoe Source. I wear a size 12, and was always able to find shoes in my size. They had different brands, but the sizing was consistent and price was not too bad. Standard department stores do not carry women’s size 12 in store. I live in an area with multiple stores in a 5 mile radius where they sell shoes and no luck – Walmart, Target, Kohl’s, JCPenney, Belk, DSW, Famous Footwear, Ross, and Marshalls. We do have a Shoe Department that is an hour away where I am may be able to find shoes about 50% of the time I go. I also have some success online. Torrid carries bigger size shoes, but they come in an extra wide width so I don’t always need a size 12 and can do an 11 or 11.5. And I recently found Journee Collection. I ordered a pair of booties from there and they fit nicely so I may try some future purchases.
nrml says
If you can find a “Sally Beauty Supply” store, they have great hair products I’ve used for years.
I’m with you on shoe stores. I wear wide shoes, none of the ones here carry them, because you can always “just buy them bigger and they’ll fit!” Well, no, they will be too long and my feet are big enough, thank you very little.

Häagen-Dazs Once made a vanilla peanut butter swirl ice cream. My favorite of all time! It went away around the time of a peanut butter issue years back and I was so disappointed. I’ve never found an acceptable substitute.

Oooh, I feel that. Some items departed the shelves of Trader joe’s that I miss – everything from vanilla cat cookies to the lemon-ginger water for which I still pine.
Other departed include Emporium Capwells, The Limited (original – socks, sweaters, and pants heaven for me), Papyrus stores (therapy in a mall), used book stores – especially the ones crammed into unusual spots and locales, Edies (soda shop), Blum’s coffee crunch cake, and China Rain fragrance by the original Body Shop in Berkeley.
Hang in there and sending healthy wishes.

Thanks to you, I now know I’m a “harbinger of failure”, I feel better!
I loved a weird chocolate cake in a can that Mont Blanc (a French company) used to make. It was light and fluffy, with a chocolate sauce and I really loved it.
More recently, Bonne Maman tried to launch a really good vanilla ice cream, with just cream, eggs, sugar and vanilla. It was not available in a lot of stores and it’s disappeared.
Same for hard shell tacos, which you couldn’t find in France when I was a kid, then finally arrived in France. Apparently they didn’t find their public, because I can’t find them anymore. Thankfully my brother just came from Wyoming, with a nice big suitcase.

Ahhh the souvenirs, thanks a lot for the smiles and fond memories

My mom would say the chocolate icing mix that was used in the original tunnel of fudge cake. She kept a box for years just in case she wanted to make the cake. She never would though because “once it was gone, it was gone” My brother took his life in his hands & carefully opened the bottom of the box, used the mix, and carefully placed the box back on the shelf. I believe it was years before my mother discovered the deception.

Nathan’ deli mustard in the wide mouth 16 oz jar. The best! I’m from Brooklyn (NYC, not Texas) the original home of Nathan’s in Coney Island.
There is no other wide mouth ja mustard now (and under $2). It’s all stupid squeeze bottles.
nrml says
Bam! Nothing like sticking in that knife and spreading the mustard around! If I may suggest that you purchase wide-mouth canning jars for jellies and dump the squeeze bottle into it to scoop it out as needed, perhaps that will help you. If it’s the same mustard, if just the delivery of it to your food is the issue, this may help you. You need to get a little creative.

Back in the 70s when I was homeless someone let me take showers in their home and they had Nature’s Gate herbal conditioner. I used it happily for years and years. It had awesome things like myrrh in it.
Then the formula was changed. I don’t understand why, company sold or something and maybe too expensive to make? It just wasn’t the same.
I yearn for a time machine so I can go back and stock up.
I’ve lost track of missing food items. Snackin’ cakes were great and so easy to make when I was a brand new baker. You mixed it in the package and added vinegar. There used to be a one skillet version of lasagne (not hamburger helper) that was awesome.
Some items disappeared from the health food store and locally, we used to have some artisanal foods that are no longer made. I was also a fan of Black Muslim Bakery products like their whole wheat cinnamon rolls and bean pies. Wha Guru Chews were a favorite though these days I’d lose a crown or a filling on them.
Speaking of fajitas, Cost Plus used to sell a spice mix called “fajita dust” which you simply sprinkled or on your protein and veggies while cooking. No similar mixes work as well. I have a great marinade I make now but this was easy when I was in a hurry.

The American way of life? I feel like my childhood way of living has been discontinued. I live in Hawaii, we had very few places to eat and shop growing up, but we did have some fun attractions for tourists that us locals would go to as well. Over the top ice cream shops, water parks, game zones with skiball and hand hockey, drive in theaters, etc… they are all gone. Every single place has closed over the years. My kids will never experience that kind of old school Americana, and they didn’t grow up with it, so if they were suddenly dropped into it now, I’m not even sure they would care. I have seen that rollerskating is making a come back, hooray! Something survived the digital take over. This Olympics is the lowest watched ever. I encourage my kids to watch, we enjoy it, but the GO TEAM USA feeling is just not there like it used to be.

My problem isn’t so much discontinued products unless a”type” no longer available which counts as discontinuation.
Specifically Quality.
I currently am in a fight with Sears over my $2000 refrigerator.
Average price point for a average refrigerator…which should last based on the average 10-13 (15 if no pets and preventative maintenance like dusting/vacuuming coils happe) years with little to no problem.
This is a Kenmore which is really a LG with a Kenmore badge (very common practice now). This product has computer boards and engineering and blah blah blah blah to supposedly increase value and perform wonderful things like conserve energy.
In reality LG has already lost 6 class actions for this family of products some to the US Government because they taught the computer boards to cheat the tests to achieve “energy star” compliance think Volvo and it’s emissions test fiasco.
This family of products has everything to confuse and lure consumers but it lacks sufficient Insulation and horsepower (undersized compressor) to actually keep ice frozen or freeze it in the first place or to keep milk from spoiling. Actual LG branded customers have routes for resolution…but mine being Kenmore has an additional layer of middlemen and legal departments to avoid responsibility for these defective products.
Anyway … I miss products that function (do their job) and companies that don’t engineer the products to fail to force the consumer back into the market thereby repeating the circle of buy, frustration, fail due to legal and middleman obstacles, dispose, buy again…
And people wonder why our oceans are full of plastics and our landfills are overflowing.

Forgot this key info for anyone that read the above
The product started underperforming just after the first year and started catastrophically failing year 5 (causing more waste food not to mention time)
So in short I miss non disposable everything they need to discontinue trash products and we as consumers need to shop smarter focus on core function and reject extra shiny trash (ie core for refridge is cooling not internet connectivity and no my product doesn’t have that but the next model up probably did)
reeder says
I look for less complicated, repairability including available parts, and hopefully better quality.
Dyson gets my admiration for being available via online chat and stocking 10+ year old corded vacuum parts for a fair price. Sure, a Samsung or LG cordless stick vac might be the better performer for the price but I know I’ll be able to get a Dyson battery or replacement canister in 3-5 years since they’re so popular.
Samsung and LG refrigerators have bad reps. Plenty of people seem to be ok with theirs but plenty of failures, too. I bought a French Door Whirlpool and measured the temperature with a data logger. Yeah. I’m weird. But the middle temp setting is actually a bit higher than 40 at times with an empty fridge. It keeps temp better when I have stuff in it.
Strike says
I have lots of hardwood floors and the carpet I have I’m ok with breaking out the 30 year old rainbow vacuum … yes is not as convenient as a stick rechargeable vac but I got the rainbow from my mother when she became to old to deal with its size. It will be functioning and functioning extremely well when my non-existent grandchildren die.
Another example of this is the older stainless steel Vitamix’s before they changed into the plastic garbage they sell now.
I 100% agree that an empty refrigerator is more work for the compressor to keep cool … anecdotal observations leads me to believe that having solids and liquids that have been cooled to X in either the refrigerator or freezer compartments act as buffers/insulators to prevent temperature fluctuations. Which makes sense because air gains/looses/equalizes faster than liquids or solids. The key thing is to load it up without impeding airflow because that’s how the cool is circulated from coils.
Having a thermostat with data logging is a wonderful tool to use and have.

I remember Jello making a desert that when you finished it made three layers – it was all in one box, one process. It was regular Jello on the bottom with the top layer the most airy. I seem to remember you used a mixmaster to whip it.
Anyway, that was years and years ago and I haven’t gotten over losing it yet.
Susan says
It was 1-2-3 Jello and though not as covenient, I make a version of it that is really good and a big hit. I get plastic cups at the dollar store and usually use strawberry jello and cool whip… bottom layer just regular jello, put in fridge till firm… Second layer with jello and cool whip blended together with my electric mixer, add on top of jello layer, back to fridge till firm, then top layer with a greater amount of cool whip added to the jello, chill till firm. I am sure other non-dairy whipped toppings could be used, but cool whip is my go to. I try to have each layer be 1/3 size. Tried to post a picture of finished product, but did not show up as an option. Because of lesser amounts for each layer, it does not take as long to firm.

For the most part though I’m curious to see what the replacements are to things that get discontinued. I don’t usually buy them more than once since they usually aren’t better, but it’s interesting what the industry considers “equal.”

Nature’s Gate went out of business and I am without the body lotion and herbal shampoo and conditioner that I’ve used for thirty years. It about broke my heart.
Caffeine Free Coke is gone and I can’t find the Mexican Fanta in bottles which was a special treat after eating a spicy lunch.
Neutrogena discontinued a non SPF tinted moisturizer that most of the women in my circle used.
Rachel Perry cosmetics gone forever.
Nabisco Famous Chocolate Cookies are almost impossible to find and I like to occasionally substitute them for graham crackers in cheese cake.
Trader Joe’s breaks my heart too often to list, but the thing from them that I miss most is the Garden Vegetable Lasagna that’s been gone for years. If they ever do away with the frozen samosas I will loose it!
I can’t find anything to replace the Australian eucalyptus gel I used to buy at our little natural foods store back in the days before Whole Wallet Foods took over.
Knudsen Hibiscus Cooler.
The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf in my neighborhood closed permanently during the pandemic of 2020, so our only walkable choice was/is Starbucks and I refuse to go there! So I bought a fancy Italian espresso machine.
My Mom was just moaning about not finding Campbell’s Chicken Gumbo and Hidden Valley Original Ranch dressing in the packets.
I think what bothers me most is the loss of independent shops everywhere. Bookstores, coffee and tea houses, clothing boutiques, gift shops and all the cafes, bistros and restaurants that were owned by locals.
I just miss being able to hang out in a comfortable cafe with my laptop and a good cup of coffee and a sandwich.
Happy Anniversary!

My cat will only eat canned Hill’s Science Diet Ocean Fish MINCED.
It started to disappear from the shelves during the start of the pandemic. I hoped, like TP, it would come back. I bought all I could at Amazon before it was gone. I bought it at Petco and Petsmart. I even found myself driving to various FleetFarms because I read online they still may have it.
I broke down and bought chunky and mashed it myself LOL, but now that’s no longer available, too!! I can only get it in an expensive multipack where there are only 4 ocean fish chunky single-serves in the 12 pack.
I know this sounds silly—we’re in a pandemic for goodness’ sake…but how can I be happy when my furry friend is not. Sigh

The most “panic buying” I have done during this pandemic has been of cat food. 5 picky seniors with various health issues and every other month I can’t get at least one type of food at least one of them is suppose to have. When a case of the Royal Canin Aging was going for over $100 on Amazon and wasn’t available at all on Chewy, I freaked. Even friskees was getting hard to find. When their food was finally available again I bought cases and cases and I now have an entire corner of my kitchen devoted to cat food and feel quite comfortable with my decision to never have less than at least a month and a half worth of “backstock” on hand at all times, lol!

My shampoo. There’s no point in naming brands, because I’ve lost track of the ones that vanish from the store. Deodorant also tends to disappear, and I really loathe trying to find new ones that work.
The kitchen outlet store in my hometown closed well before COVID, taking with it my best source of cake decorating supplies. Wilton brand from Michaels used to work in a pinch, but lately the Michaels nearest me seems to have switched to a random brand for cake supplies, and I really don’t love it. Probably going to have to put on my big girl pants and do bulk orders from the suppliers!

Joann (used to be just fabrics, but no longer is) carries cake decorating supplies. No idea how to decorate cakes here, being non-artistic that way, but you could look to see what they have. I know they carry Wilton, at least.

They discontinued these chocolate chip cookies I used to buy at Trader Joe’s as a pick me up for myself. I was so sad when I found out! You can see a picture of its packaging here: https://www.becomebetty.com/trader-joes-chocolate-chip-cookies/
I am also sick though supposedly not COVID as I got tested yesterday and it came back negative but who knows at this point. I went to a wedding this past weekend and had a slightly twingy throat but I thought it was just due to dryness and what not. I got tested 48 hours before to be on the safe side which I always planned on doing before the wedding and it was also negative. I didn’t have real symptoms until last night after I got back and the sore throat emerged in earnest along with nasal congestion. It honestly feels like a typical cold to me but I’m isolating from my parents just in case. I’d rather be sick this week as two weekends from now I’m supposed to go on a trip out west and I’d like to not be sick when I go. I am fully vaccinated by the way. I hope the boyfriend feels better soon and can get fully vaccinated soon.

I used to buy a dehydrated veggie mix by Sojo’s for my dog, who starts chewing on houseplants (preferably toxic) if she doesn’t get enough veggies in her diet. It was convenient at home and I liked having it in the go bag for emergency evacuations. I haven’t found a good replacement yet.

For me, in the UK they discontinued Douwe Egberts delicate vanilla coffee. The best vanilla flavour in coffee with a company that’s good good credentials from an ethical stand point.
Now I can get it and am very bitter when I see that they still sell it (or they did the last time I checked) in other countries.
It was my go to bulk buy as I had to add they were small jars coffee.
BTW, I think the vienetta you like is still sold in the UK… so if you guys (pay pandemic) ever have a book tour over here (praying to the publishing gods to fund one) then you’ll be able to treat yourself to that at least… but it might not taste the same given that the same thing made in different countries with their slight variations or local ingredients; can taste completely different.
Best of luck with all the jabs and I hope that Kid 1’s boyfriend gets well soon without any long covid complications.

I loved the Viennetta cake too, and I was just thinking about it the other day. My favorite that has gone by the wayside was Lemon Coolers (the cookie)… it was a box of cookies that never lasted past one sitting. Also, those chocolate wafer cookies (extra thin) that you could make your own Viennetta cake with. And there was a wafer thin vanilla cookie that was my other favorite (I think we have a theme here). All gone! what a shame

Happy quarter century anniversary!
I miss being able to just grab a fizzy drink. Nearly every single drink going has aspartame in it even when it’s not being branded as low sugar or sugar free (UK has a sugar tax). Aspartame gives me migraines. It’s even in regular coca-cola, tango, ribena and yummy Dr Pepper.
Nestle discontinued a cereal called clusters which were delicious and pretty much the only fancy cereal I enjoyed.
I used to have Sara Lee double chocolate gateau (frozen I think it was) as my birthday cake as a child and in my memory it was spectacular.
I mention in memory because I also used to enjoy a Birds Eye beef grillsteak in my teens/early 20s and hadn’t seen them for years. Last month I was in a different Sainsbury’s when I saw them and impulse bought. They were disgusting. My younger self must have been mouth dead. Just urgh. And I still like Bird’s Eye chicken chargrills so that gives you an idea of my low standards.
Too many shops to name have closed down around here. Chain stores, known brands, small local shops, familiar faces, all gone. It’s been a tough time. I’m glad you’re keeping covid out of your worlds. I just wish we could keep it out of ours.

we were in the military. Lived overseas in Japan and West Berlin, when the wall was still up, and when it came down. I learned not to get attached to certain foods, because try and find the same chicken and walnut dish from Japan, yes i know it’s a chinese dish, but Japanese like chinese food too. Chicken fried rice has taken me years and i finally found it close from Kobe Steak House. Brochen from Germany was a hard addition to get away from and the cheese danish they had, because i can’t find it in Montana anywhere. oh and the Goulash from visits to East Berlin for shopping. it’s nothing like American Goulash sigh.

Happy Anniversary! Hate when things change. I am plus sized also and have a tendency to buy the same clothing items over and over. I buy a lot of clothes from Lands End, Have been happy with most. I also have been happy with some shirts from Old Navy but ordering online can be frustrating as they seem to run out of whatever color I like right away. You could always see about ordering from Maurices online. Same goes with ordering Yankee candles.
However next year they are predicting that CA will have a bacon shortage due to new laws going active. I made a joke that we should buy a small chest freezer just for bacon ????

My favorite restaurant in Orlando closed due to the pandemic, Vito’s Chophouse. It’s been closed over a year and I thought they had decided to call it quits but there are rumors they will reopen in October, ????, but maybe not with the varient. Mostly, I feel betrayed by tv shows: Flash Forward, Santa Clarita Diet, the Finder. All ended on cliffhangers, all were great shows I wanted to keep watching. I was a picky eater so my mom used to make us Tuna Helper, back when they used yellow/cheddar cheese. Now you can only find Hamburger Helper and maybe the “Tuna Helper” but with Alfredo sauce.
But, being a proper Mexican housewife, she made a good Mexican tortilla soup.
There’s also Quesabritas, basically cheddar puff balls but with spices and lime on it, way more delicious any other cheddar puff ball you will ever find. But Cheetos bought the brand and now makes their own greasy version (but still better than regular puff balls). I asked my dad for his upcoming vaccination visit to fit as many as he can in his suitcase.
To continue with the cheese, my dad’s hometown of Jerez, Zacatecas made this delicious, juicy, fresh Oaxaca string cheese that I would practically finish by myself growing up. Out of the 5 fresh local cheeses that they made in that hometown, that one was discontinued. I think the factory was sold. I dream about that cheese….

I decided not have the pandemic in Dina’s world. Because I have that power.
*sigh of relief* Oh, thank you so much for that… Who knows, there might be a day when I’ll be fine with reading about covid in fiction, but right now it’s too much of a real life worry to really want to experience it anywhere else.
That said, this got me pondering whether Sean would be naturally immune to the covid virus, in which case Dina would be able to send him out on errands to replenish Caldenia’s Mello Yello supply and such. (Just a personal guess, but I would expect that if any virus were to enter his body, then the ossai would immediately and savagely kick its ass.) But maybe Dina would just buy her groceries from Baha-char instead, in a pinch. So perhaps covid wouldn’t affect Dina’s life all that much to begin with?

Three things I really miss:
1. Many years ago the local grocery carried Coffee chip ice cream that was absolutely amazing. I have still not found anything close to it in quality.
2. Baking bags with seasoned rice. These were baking bags with rice and seasoning, add water, and bake for 30 minutes to get sweet and sour rice or mushroom rice or some other flavor. I would add vegetables and meat, bake for 30 minutes, and have sweet and sour chicken and vegetables over rice. Truly some of the easiest meals I have ever made and have never been able to replicate.
3. Bake on cake topping. Years and years ago, there was a bake on cake topping sold. It was a chocolate crumb topping with mini chocolate chips and fudge drizzle. The crumb/chip part was sprinkled on the batter before baking, then the fudge drizzled over after the cake was baked. If you put it on a yellow or chocolate cake, it came out looking beautiful, as if you had put a lot of work into creating the topping. It was perfect for a sheet cake when you needed something fast, easy, and pretty to take to a function. It also tasted great and was a party favorite. When I heard that it had been discontinued, I went to the store and bought every single box I could find.
aneliese says
Or wait, I just thought of one way covid might affect Dina’s daily life… Wouldn’t Caldenia be *terribly* disappointed if the virus were to put an end to their neighbor’s orgies? If everybody’s isolating at home, who is she going to spy on? So, yes, it probably is best if Caldenia isn’t deprived of her daily juicy gossip and entertainment. 🙂

Erm, just reread my comment and realized it might sound like I was saying covid would’ve been an interesting addition to Innkeeper, which was not my intention. So to avoid any misunderstandings: my comments were meant to convey that
1) I’m really thankful if authors choose not to introduce covid to books that are otherwise escapism from the real world,
2) Introducing covid to Dina’s world might well have been a unnecessary addition anyway since it wouldn’t really affect her life much. She has no human loved ones left on Earth who would be at risk, she doesn’t need to leave the inn to work or run errands, and her alien guests with advanced medical technology probably wouldn’t be at risk either. So, yeah… I think it also makes perfect sense plot-wise not to include the pandemic there.

We have a brand of chili seasoning I’ve grown up with French’s Chili-O. I live in Texas now, but I still make chili with Chili-O. This meal is quick and filling, with variations such as: chili’n’grits, “taco-in-a-bowl” (lettuce, rice, chili, onions-if-you-can-stand-them, cheese, and Fritos), frito pie, just-give-me-the-damn-chili, you name it. At Christmas time, when 30 people pile into a single kitchen, one of the classic meals is that Taco-in-a-bowl, made with French’s Chili-O.
However, in 2020, this beloved seasoning packet disappeared from my Kroger. I Googled, and found that the powers that be at McCormick are rebranding it as “Durkee Chili Pronto”. Who is Durkee? What did he do to deserve this spice mix? Why is it *still* not available at my Kroger?
I gave up, and tried other chili seasoning packets: McCormick’s, HEB Two-Alarm, that blog’s seasoning mix. They are not awful, but they are also not MY chili. My parents recently discovered that Amazon is still selling Chili-O, and sent me packets for my birthday. I was delighted. Now I’m feeding the insatiable space magnate for my chili needs.

As to the hoarding instinct, we live in the country so shopping is a pain as it is a long drive to anywhere. We have a walk-in pantry stocked with as many staples as we can fit. My mother thinks we’re preppers, but we just really hate to go to the store.
I do have to admit, though, there have been some odd shortages popping up in SC due to some sort of shipping issue. A lot of the stores we use are having problems getting product deliveries.

I’m sensitive to perfumes and can wear only a few scents. For years and years I’ve used Bath and Body Plumeria hand lotion and body cream. A few years ago they stopped carrying it in the stores on a regular basis and I totally freaked, but then at the semi- annual sale it was available for purchase either at the store – if they didn’t sell out before I got there – or on line, where I had to pay shipping in addition to sales tax. But it was worth it. Now when I go to the web site, the search results say plumeria can’t be found. I even looked on Amazon, and they have a few bottles of the lotion. However they range in price from $28.99 to a whopping $47.89. For an 8 oz. bottle! Here’s hoping Bath and Body is monitoring your site and brings it back.

We have lost some favorite restaurants in the last few years. Sunshine Cafe was an old Japanese restaurant that made their own pickles. I loved those pickles.
Kow Kow wAs an old fashioned Chinese American restaurant that had the very best egg rolls. We have found a place that has excellent sizzling rice soup, and some amazing Korean home cooked food, but the eggs are just good, not sublime.
Then the Italian place that made a wonderful ricotta and spinach cheese pie served with a mushroom lemon butter sauce that was so very good. But all was not lost. The owner of that restaurant moved in with his daughter, and proceeded to drive her nuts. So she went out and found a location and funding for a second restaurant for her Dad so she didn’t have to kill him. We are all much happier now.

Oh I needed to comment on this! These are the discontinued items that I am still upset about.
1) Trader Joe had parmesan ranch salad dressing
2) Costco had roasted red pepper chicken burgers
3) Taco Bell had chili cheese burritos and taco salads (RIP taco salad)
4) Benefit cosmetics had a foundation I bought for my mom who has rosacea and has difficulty finding something that works
5) Virbac (pet company) had dental chews made from some animal digestive enzyme that my cats would chew to clean their teeth. Discontinued by the company only to be replaced with useless rock-hard pebbles which my cats just threw around on the floor like a hockey puck.
TERRIBLE! If a company makes something and doesn’t say it’s limited edition, then they better keep selling it for at least a decade.

My favorite restaurant in Lexington closed due to the pandemic- no matter where I was going or who I was with, if I was traveling south to north (or vice versa) we were stopping at that restaurant. It had been recently been bought out by a boutique hotel brand and they took my sweet-potato hazelnut ravioli in brown butter and collard greens off the menu (forever earning my contempt), but they weren’t able to get off the ground before I even got to try it.

Lancôme discontinued a lipstick and a nail polish color, both over 10 years ago, but I loved them sooooo! I still think of them today!
The red lipstick was the perfect color for my skin tone, it made my skin look creamy and was a darker color so it didn’t look vampy or flashy.
The pink nail polish was my favorite for toes because I don’t like sparkly thing s like fake jewels or paintings of flowers on my toes. It was just pink enough to feel girly without being cheap looking and opalescent enough to be pretty to look at and not just flat shine.
So sad????

I seem to pick things other people don’t care for in foods. It seems my favorite thing is often discontinued. The last two really crushed me. Lipton brought out a bottled blueberry white tea. It was light, not too sweet, and had fabulous blueberry flavor. It was discontinued almost as quickly as it came out. Then, I tried a new Monster flavor I really liked. I don’t like carbonation, which eliminates most energy drinks. This was white tea with dragon fruit. Refreshing! Unfortunately, Monster brought out three tea flavors including the dragon fruit, and the other two were AWFUL. So I’m not surprised the tea was all discontinued, but I’m still crushed. It was a great way to start the day. I feel the sadness!

Melinda’s Chipotle Ketchup – the yellow label version which is ‘All Natural’ ingredients & ‘Gluten Free’. This variety has now been replaced with a red label version. The ingredients list has changed (not for the better IMHO) & it doesn’t have the gluten free guarantee. Not an issue for my partner or I, but we have friends with celiac disease. Eating gluten in any format results in severe pain & a trip to the hospital. So I was thrilled to have sourced a GF ketchup that was just plain yummy. Except now I can’t get the version I adore. Not sure if it is discontinued, or just out of stock due to supply chain issues. Had ordered from a supplier I’d used before, checked to ensure that the ingredients listed beside the picture of the product (which showed the yellow label) matched what I already had. Did, ordered & what arrived? The red label version. The Chilly Chilies website is out of date. Just saying.

Blue Bell ice cream keeps coming up with delicious flavors and then making them go away! First it was birthday cake flavored (and it’s not the same as what they sell in the little bitty “fun size” cups that come as a 24 pack), then it was some sort of fudge swirl… The birthday cake flavor seems to come and go periodically, though it’s been about 3 or 4 years since I last saw it. For instance, even though we have Coke & Pepsi vendors coming every day, they are just bringing the “basics” or the most popular products and even then it’s in smaller quantities than usual. Plus if we get run a sale( which are planned out a year+ in advance), then we sell out even quicker. So thank you for being patient with your grocery store personnel. We wish we had your favorite products back in too. That said, you might go up to customer service and they might be able to special order certain products you want. PSA delivered lol, here are a few of my favorite rare/discontinued products that I loved:
Cranberry Sprite(fall 2017-fall 2018).
Low fat white cheddar cheez-its( makes me feel better about eating half a box) lol
Pretzel and cinnamon Graham cracker Goldfish( disappeared early 2020)
Campbells WellYes Butternut Squash Apple Bisque.

Re: Massage – I bought a Theragun on sale last year since I also have a sitting job. It really helps loosen my muscles and I’m flexible enough that the triangular handle lets me hit parts of my back. I also upgraded my home office chair to a corporate grade ergonomic office chair like I had at work.
Hoping Kid 1’s boyfriend will get well soon. If they feel like sharing, is there anything the pro-vaccine people can do or say to help get younger people vaccinated?

This is a local one, but my grocery store used to offer premium ice cream in ‘Cherry Armagnac’. It was fantastic. I used to serve it with brownies or chocolate cake at parties. Everyone loved it. Of course it was discontinued—we are waaaay upstate- no normal person knows what Armagnac is— if they’d called it ‘Brandied Cherry’ it would have sold like gangbusters. Read the room, Wegmans.
On the topic of substitutes for lost and lamented ice cream, and forgive me if others have already pointed this out, but Haagen-Dasz makes a ‘triple layered’ pint of ice cream and crisp, thin chocolate that is almost but not quite entirely unlike Viennetta. It’s pretty good, anyhow. 🙂

I love your “Perestroika Russianness”! The best way to go through life is PREPARED TO THE EYEBALLS!!! As an Army wife in Hawaii, we faced the annual rumors about ships with supplies like TP being delayed by hurricanes as well as other self-fulfilling prophecies and I learned well. Now, if we could find the Hubster’s favorite lite fruit punch that nobody in Hamilton or Coryell County Texas sells, we would be in business!

Knorr used to make an Oxtail soup mix that I used to have when I was sick at home. It was so thick and rich, It was great for dipping toast into. My ex got sick with the flu one year and I made it for her and she loved it. Knorr discontinued it sadly when the issue of bovine related Creuzfeldt Jacobs disease was discovered in cattle and the possibility it was being pased on to humans. So sad to see it go because it was so good but at the same time better to err on the side of caution. That said it was my second most favourite soup and I miss it.

When I was much much younger, during the 60s, there was this breakfast product called Concentrate (I think). It came in a smaller box and the directions seemed to be that it was a topper on other cereals. I always ate it plain with milk. It had flakes that were about the size of oatmeal and tasted so creamy. I still look for it on occasion (an old woman’s dream). Just googled it and it’s definitely gone.

I shopped at the Samsonite store in that outlet mall last week. I needed another suitcase for my train trip back to the west coast. Oddly, there are two Samsonite stores, one at the T*** Outlet Mall, and one at the P*** Outlet Mall. The lady on the phone at the P*** said they were identical, but we pulled into the T*** parking lot, so we went there. I believe I got the same case for 10 bucks cheaper than it would’ve been at another P*** Outlet Mall north of Austin, so I’m going to convince myself that I found the secret discount.
The primary purpose of that road trip was to find a slice of Black Forest Cake in New Braunfels, but we got to downtown after the German bakeries closed for the day, and none of the other restaurants had it on their desert menus that day. So that mission failed, but I can recommend the ‘2Tarts’ bakery if anyone wants a distracting confectionary.
I’m not sure how useful blanking the names of the malls was, but it seemed polite to… someone. No idea. Have a better tomorrow?

Trolli Gummy Bears were discontinued when Trolli and Black Forest were combined. They kept other gummy flavors from Trolli, but ditched the gummy bears. Those Black Forest gummy bears are not acceptable. I have had to move to Gold Bären. Which are decent, but like a lot of European candy sold in the US, isn’t the same as actual Gold Bären from Germany. So, I wander through European markets looking for gummy bears made in Germany.
The other thing I miss is the original McDonalds fries from back when they double fried them in lard. Sure, not vegetarian like they are now, but they were sooooo good.

One thing Covid killed for me was my job as party manager at a family owned arcade/entertainment center. It was a great place to work and I gained a major appreciation of a small business model. The owners tried to open for a couple of months when things opened back up last year. Energizer Egg Replacer, and Kraft Macaroni elbow macaroni noodles. My eldest is deathly allergic to egg. Egg in any form and any trace= a week long hospital stay and up until this year, being stabbed every four hours for at least five days with epi pens because they can’t control her reactions with an epi drip cause her heart would go nuts. Turns out egg is in pretty much EVERYTHING. Or it has touched egg or was made in a facility with egg.
Kraft does not use egg or nuts in their facilities. It is to date the only noodle we’ve found that looks like what my daughter associates as ‘safe noodles’ because all other elbow macaroni is made with egg. ALL OTHER. The discontinuation meant scrapping pretty much any pasta dish we made because she did not trust the new looking noodles and there were no safe ones she was used to. We now buy our egg replacer on Amazon and have to get it shipped from over seas to guarantee we get Egg free Egg replacer with no actual eggs because our stores egg free products all contain egg whites…
We also had to switch all our soap/shampoo/condition brands because with the pandemic companies that were allergy free changed their products to include an easier to get ingredient- almond oil WITHOUT stating their products were no longer nut free. They just ‘forgot’ almonds are nuts so all the hypoallergenic products we used are now filled with NOT hypoallergenic nuts. Hubby and daughter are allergic to almond. I literally had to go to three stores and spend almost 40 mins to an hour in each reading teeny tiny print on everything until I found safe products to replace ours that won’t mess with their skin or asthma too AND had enough I could stock up in case the one safe brand decides to discontinue their safe products too. I officially hate sweet almond oil now.
On another note, I know the steak sauce you speak of and I switched to Old Country Bob’s Sauce and we are all like it even more.
Simone says
Sorry to hear of her allergy – it is a tough one. My husband is allergic to potatoes and it is in way more items than you ever thought possible (potato flour / sugar / starch etc.) as it is cheap substitution. We too read every single label and cook mostly from scratch. He can’t eat many gluten free foods when my GF brother comes to visit as they use the Ener-G egg substitute, which is made from potato starch!
I’m sure you’ve done the research but just in case it helps:
In recipes there are other egg substitutes – such as flax seeds, baking powder & baking soda, chia seeds, banana, applesauce – depending on what is being made. ¼ cup carbonated water can replace each egg in most cake or cupcake recipes.

About vienetta vanila ice cream, not awhile ago it was brought back and being sold again in Indonesia. Even now it’s still easy to find them in the supermarket.
About discontinued thing, there’s a local food brand from my university days that sells mushrooms-related product. I like a particular curry flavor of it and its satay. But now I can no longer find the curry flavor in the shop’s catalogue and the satay’s production is currently on hold due to internal factor and when I inquired about it, the customer can’t provide an exact date or even any estimation as to when the satay production will continue again. The brand introduces several new flavors, but I still can’t forget the curry flavor I really like yet.

Try a sports physiotherapy business as an option with your massage spa closing. I did that and my back muscle issues don’t come back as quick.
Catherine says
Yes! A sports physio therapist fixed my back for me. She figured out my sacroiliac joint was not fully seated on my right side, and manipulated my leg till it slid back into place. Then I did exercises (religiously) for a couple of years till the memory of the pain faded.
I was 19 when the joint was injured (bike accident), 44 when I was referred to the physio who fixed me (Donna of Motion Matters, Ottawa) and I have had 10 pain free years.
But you have to find a good physio, some seem to just want to keep you coming back forever, which gets expensive for those of us without health benefit plans.

There used to be a delicious whole wheat bread line called Brownberry Ovens. Around the year 2000, I think Arnold breads bought it and phased it out, maybe because it was expensive to produce (wheat berries, hearty whole wheat flour), or the mill that produced the meaty flour went under, or because its nutty, dense magnificence in a square loaf size put the other mass-produced Arnold breads to shame. I have tried Food For Life Ezekiel sesame bread, which makes good French toast, but dry crumbly sandwiches. A line called Rustic Ovens makes good sliced multigrain bread in sliced half-boule loaves, when I can find it on the shelf. There is a seedy Harvest loaf at Whole Foods and Giant (in the bakery display case), a low elongated boule shape, that’s good for toast and open-faced sandwiches. The quest for a Brownberry replacement continues.

You can still get Yellow rice with Saffron. The Vigo brand changed the bag Target still has it. Then there is Par Excellence(also has pepper bits) on Amazon. There are a few brands out there. You can also make yellow rice by using turmeric or taking annatto seeds putting them in a small jar with olive oil (in the fridge and when you want to make yellow rice just put a spoon of the oil in the rice with all your other seasonings. Some people just use an orange Sazon Goya flavoring pack but that does contain MSG if you are sensitive.

My most recent and bitter betrayal is the changing of the Butterfinger recipe. The flaky, buttery center made it my favorite candy bar none (pun intentional). Then they changed the recipe for more “international appeal” and made the chocolate sickly-sweet and the toffee-ish center now tastes like actual roasted peanuts. Because there just aren’t enough candy bars with peanuts, apparently.
But a friend just got me hooked on Ikea toffees… They aren’t a replacement, but there’s an amazing fruity taste to the chocolate that pushes them above Heath bars, which were my default favorite after the fall of Butterfinger.
Older betrayals I still hold grudges about are losing McDonald’s original cinnamon rolls, Sonic’s Chicago dog, Captain D’s rolls, one of my favorite local restaurants and their amazing s’mores sundae… Er, there may be a theme here…

Baskin-Robbin’s had oreo ‘n cold brew as a flavor in March. I finally found the best tasting ice cream in the world, on my birthday, and they weren’t getting any more… I bought the rest of the tub they had and rationed it out. *sob*
Susan says
That is the problem with Baskin-Robbins flavor of the month… it is very limited and may or may not ever return even as a one month flavor! I really miss the emails I got on the first of the month that not only informed me of their flavor of the month, but offered a buy one get one free ice cream coupon which I used to get two triple scoops of my favorite, Jamoca, ice cream. They also do not do the reduced prices for scoops of ice cream on the 31st… this stopped last year when lockdowns started happening. Not sure, if and when, it will come back. For now, I pay around $8.50 for a quart of Jamoca and make it last a month. Wish they would offer plain Jamoca in prepackaged quarts rather than hand packed, could get two for almost the price of one that way… do not want chocolate and almonds mixed with the Jamoca.
I wonder if you could have Oreos added to Jamoca ice cream like a Dairy Queen blizzard… if they do that at BR and if it would work for you.

I was about to say that we still have Viennetta in the UK but I see everyone else has also pointed this out. So how about this for an obscure Viennetta fact to go with the feast Mod R will throw you one day when our ships all come in? Viennetta used to be protected by a patent and then, until it got invalidated, by a 3D trade mark registration, making it one of the relatively few human foodstuffs where its method of production and/or shape had intellectual property protection.
Bet you wish you were inviting me to that Viennetta party now, don’t you? Oh yes, it would be a riot. Come for the ice-cream, but stay for IP!

Every time I like a food, or clothing, or car, or series, it is guaranteed to be discontinued.

I used to live in Mt. Holly Springs, Pennsylvania. Very very small town in the Susquahanna Valley. They had these chocolate covered peanut butter eggs at Easter time that a local church made to raise money. Ou could only find them at locally owned stores (like the local pharmacy). Ive never had a better peanut butter egg; its a hundred times better than hershey’s/reese’s. I live hundreds of miles away now and im sad at Easter now.
Also, im pretty sure hershey’s and snyders pretzels had a chocolate covered pretzel together, called Dipps, but their partnership broke up. I think they each individually have a chocolate covered pretzel they offer now, but both are inferior to the Dipps with the combination of companies. Although i would argue hersheys is better than the snyders because their chocolate tastes better.

I miss Heyday bars. Nabisco made them and quit in the late 80’s early 90’s. Crunchy bars with chocolate, caramel and peanuts. They were amazing.

So many things we used have disappeared over time. A few things I remember: Mo’s 24 by Celestial Seasonings – we dropped one bag into our iced tea steep and it made the most wonderful iced tea. We have rave reviews when entertaining or making tea for gatherings. Currently I’m mourning my inability to find Hidden Valley Ranch Buttermilk dressing mix. I finally found it online but SO expensive! I make a much-requested dip from it. We used to have a grocery store chain which stocked different stuff. When it went out of business, our Kroger stores quit carrying all of that stuff so I have no way of getting them anymore. I eat Breyer’s carb sense ice cream and ice cream bars. Getting very hard to find and out of stock quite often. I’m afraid they’re going to discontinue or Kroger’s will stop stocking it. I believe this happens constantly; the product needs a bigger fan base, I guess. ;-( Really good brand of diet root beer soda. Frozen chocolate cookie dough. On the other hand, we are very blessed with the many things we have…

Hmmm. Things I miss. The world has changed a lot in my lifetime, and food was never my Really Big Thing. When I was a child, we had a fireplace and wood cooking range. They were a lot of work, but we never worried about What Would Happen if the power went out. We had a well (best water ever), but the water was not piped into the house, so we did not worry about frozen pipes. I find I like air conditioning, warm rooms (with a fireplace to toast on one side and freeze on the other), and hot showers. Electricity, electric lighting, and computers attached to the Internet are marvelous things. I would miss them — terribly. But what do I miss? Real cotton fabric. There is no substitute. Real, dress-grade wool, both as fabric and as crafting supply. Aluminum tea-kettles that will hold a half gallon of water. Good, hardwheat flour. But above all, the innocence of a world where we hoped that war, prejudice, and many other bad things could be cured by showing up, sitting down, and peacefully singing songs. George Carlin has gone to that performance hall of Somewhere Else, Arlo Guthrie retired last year. Who are our bards now?

When I was a kid, Twix for a limited time had cookies and cream Twix. I loved them so much. I remembered them with fondness. When they came out with their new cookies and cream Twix, I was so excited, but so disappointed when I tasted them. Why would they put cookies in the cream part when the bottom part of the bar is a chocolate cookie? I don’t remember cookies in the cream of the distantly remembered ideal.

Betty Crocker Microrave (cake mix that you added water to and microwaved). There’s somewhat similar items out there now (Betty Crocker Warm Delights), but nothing quite matches up to the original, which was discontinued in 1992. Starbucks vanilla scone cookies – a 2pack with an owl shaped cookie & a cat cookie
Sara Lee banana cake
Sephora Super Regenerating Oil-Gel – fabulous texture that absorbed easily into skin. also a great dark purple bottle. So pretty 🙂
Avon’s clay based skincare line – Porefection (?)
The Amaretto Lindor chocolate flavour. Only ever saw it in the variety pack. Now the pack only has milk, dark & white chocolates. Sigh.
Body Shop original vanilla perfume oil (20+yrs ago). Now they have a vanilla based line every Christmas but they are hit & miss. Mostly too sweet.
Stegmans Wool-felt slippers. Bestest ever!! Support feet & toasty warm. Found them at an on-line warehouse but mucho expensive. Hoarding my last pair. Will miss terribly when worn out.
Also, lived in Japan for 2 yrs and they have milk flavoured products. Milk flavoured Hagen-Dasz has no equal! It is a very delicate flavour but definitely milk, not vanilla or cream. I miss it terribly. Had never seen it before or since returning to Toronto.

I have learned to make donuts because Krispy Kreme was a 12 hour drive (now I just have to drive to the next state (90 minutes.))
I really miss the sweet rolls that Flowers bakery made with the strawberry filling and thick but not really sugary icing. None of my attempts are close. Very tasty but not like my memory.

Waitrose used to do these amazing Mojito ice lollies complete with alcohol, they were fab, and I was heart broken when they were stopped. Viennetta is alive and well and living in England and comes in multiple flavours – see another reason to come as it’s not like I can ship you some. Not food but suede full seat dressage breeches. No world ending, but they have been replaced with techno fabric and silicone grip seat. Not I have nothing against the new style, it looks amazing on a svelte 20 something, but not so forgiving on a 52 year old, still competing at a high level (I keep reminding myself that I still have 20 years to make the Olympic team before I would be the oldest to do so – gentleman from Japan holds the record I believe. I miss caramel pudding. Neither butterscotch, or toffee flavours compare to caramel. I can make it from scratch but I don’t do it often because boiling sugar is scary! I miss rosemary and black pepper chips. I don’t remember the brand because I knew it would be discontinued when I discovered it. I feel as if someone follows me through the grocery and makes notes to discontinue everything I buy.
We ate Kraft “Deli Deluxe” (I think) cheddar cheese for almost 40 years (it looks like American but tastes sharper, and it melts better than real cheddar) until, last year, it disappeared.
I like the mini-wheats with raisin goo inside, but they fell victim to the fad to stop eating raisins because they have too much sugar.
I love cherry TicTacs. TicTacs in general seem to have suffered a decline, and now most places sell only orange or peppermint. Yuck.
The small business losses resulting from COVID are tragic and widespread. The one that affected me the most is the closing of a pet store chain called “Pet Valu” which offered DIY dog wash facilities for only $10 a wash. It was a great service!

Thank you, Ilona Andrews for the post.
Somethings I haven’t found a replacement for like iced cinnamon buns with raisins in. Many decades ago when I was a little girl my grandfather would buy from Piggly Wiggly grocery store on our way fishing on the Edisto River in SC. Now I make my own.
Buffalo meat either ground or steak. Earthfare which closed last year had in organic meat department. Less fat that cattle. Different taste than stockyard corn finished. Not game-y like deer either. Deer I get from local hunters provided I share chili with them.
Before the local cotton mill was sold to overseas investors and switched from good quality 100% cotton products, I bought 100% organic cotton bed clothes, bath towels, tee shirts and boot socks locally. When elderly owner retired and his children took over the mill was sold. I haven’t been able to find 100% cotton sheets that don’t cost a fortune. Cotton holds up to many bleachings be it blood, manure…, or dog toe nails shredding as make a sleep nest. Closest towel are those very expensive Egyptian cotton towel which are too expensive for everyday use.
Thank you for the trip down memory lane.

HEB used to stock Louisiana Purchase Red Beans & Rice mix. It tasted great without being too heavily spiced (looking at you Zatarans). Then it disappeared. They have other products for that brand but that mix is gone for good.
Recently, Kroger was carrying a brand of tortillas with a sugar skull on the front – they actually beat HEBs (blasphemy!). Gone.
Makeup and skincare seem to be the biggest repeat offenders – I think because people chase the next new thing. It’s frustrating because there is a fair amount of money spent to find the product that works for me – I don’t want to start all over again.

As a kid I almost never got to drink soda (my mom was strict about a few things). One of my favorite sodas was BARQ’S FRENCH VANILLA CREME SODA. It just disappeared!
I have a hell of a time finding BREYER’S ROCKY ROAD ice cream. I love Breyer’s, in part because they keep it simple & natural. It is still made but is almost never available.
As a kid I used to get this little round tin of French hard candies (Strawberry was my fav). I could only ever find them in a drug store. They discontinued them years ago. They were LES FRAISES BONBONS BY LA VIE DE LA VOSGIENNE.
Then there is UNION BAY CLOTHING CO pants (like khakis & loser none jean casual pants) that I’ve loved since college (late 90’s). It is almost impossible to find them anymore.

Might be worth investigating an inversion table. Allows you to go mostly upside down just by raising and lowering your arms. Releases all pressure on your back (to your ankles) for a little bit but you are in full control. I know a few people for whom it has made an enormous difference.
They are very adjustable but not cheap. But if it helps your back by easing the pressure then probably worth it. It is one of those things you need to try first though I would reckon.

I have celiac disease and had it years before it became popular enough to be able to buy things like gluten-free cookies or good GF Bread. I’m probably only a good baker now because I put a life-time’s worth of baking failure under my belt during those years and my current success is a mercy, pure and simple.
Hodgeson’s Mill makes THE BEST GF cornbread mix, I like salty cornbread, but their “sweet” cornbread falls perfectly into the no-man’s-land between salty and sweet. It was cheaper than everything else GF (2.50 per box) and so good that I stopped trying to get my husband to eat the normal kind instead. Walmart just up and discontinued it 0_0. “Water water everywhere but not a drop to drink” is the old version of gluten-free life when you just couldn’t make or buy any edible baked good. I felt totally betrayed. I found it at King Soopers, then they discontinued it in-store too. There was no substitute but after a while it became available online. I now buy it by the case from Kroger online along with wal-mart’s pilsbury gf flour, which is the rest of the reason I’m now a good GF baker ^_~

I must tell you, there is only one thing (in this genre of ‘worst things,’ that is)worse than a product you loved and depended on being discontinued. That product being brought back years later… and being inferior to the product you remember. Whether it’s actually inferior, or your rose-colored goggles are only making it inferior doesn’t matter. The frustration of something you loved and lost coming back only to gut punch you with being terrible… So RUDE!

artificial mint flavoring turns the inside of my mouth bright red and itchy. meaning every single mouthwash in the stores cant be used. there used to be a grape flavored ADULT mouthwash to prevent plaque and tartar that i loved, and it was discontinued. it wasn’t a stupid childrens version designed only to prevent cavities and do nothing against tartar or plaque. i’ve been searching and searching, and have found a citrus flavored one to try.
i hate mint! i have to use special prescription toothpaste the dentist is able to order in bubble gum flavor. because again, childrens toothpaste is only made for cavity prevention. yet dental companies seem to think adults only want mint flavor. so frustrating.

Before I ever heard of Krispy Kreme donuts, we had Saps. I don’t really remember liking them for very long before that small company went under, but they were delicious. Krispy Kreme donuts – when fresh – are a pretty close replacement. There used to be this yogurt brand I loved as a dessert, but I can’t remember the name of the brand. It was a parfait style yogurt, marketed in the US as a Quaker product – it was only out for a year or so in my area before being discontinued. Brummel and Brown had a strawberry yogurt spread, and it was the best thing ever on blueberry bagels. Closest replacement is just strawberry cream cheese, but it’s not as good because the strawberry flavor gets a little overwhelmed. Just realized that most of this is junk food, but eh.

Frick’s smoked bacon jowl. I use it in collards, cabbage, ramen, beans, etc… It was sold in supermarkets for about $3-4/lb. I couldn’t find it within a 20mile radius since December 2019 so I switched to Smithfield smoked jowl. As of this past Sunday, it too has disappeared from all local stores, labeled as “out of stock”. I had to order a different smoked jowl at $9/lb online vs. paying $14/lb for some locally made “artisan” jowl from heritage hogs.
I usually find ways around flavoring ingredients by making my own seasoning blends from scratch, but I’m not set up to cure, smoke, then vaccuum-seal 10-15 lbs of jowl!

My massage place closed. But my massuer continues to buy pie from me at the Farmers market and she told me where she’s working now… Better than nothing! We spent the last year ordering in way more than we did pre-covid to try and keep restaurants in business. So far I think we lost one in the area. All my lambs (except one stubborn sister) are vaccinated.
And we just had our first delta variant in the area… Hospital is fine, lots of ends available. We’re doing ok here in rural Michigan.
It also seems to me the tide of idiocy is turning here too. An idiot in the grocery store withno mask and a tee shirt that said “Don’t get vaccinated”. Some old lady told him he should just tattoo “I’m an idiot and a sociopath” on his forehead… Nobody looked away, everyone looked disapprovingly at him… I said “amen”. He looked around at all the disapproval and left.

My spouse is allergic to milk, soy, treenuts, other nuts, coconut, peanuts…
Ice cream was the thing he loved the most in the before times. [Eight years ago, he could eat all that, which is terrifying to think about because what if the trend continues?].
Anyway, in the long series of ice creams that were discontinued, the highlight was a Talenti chocolate sorbet. No substitute found. Every time we lose one of these ice creams, I wonder why. This stuff is so good that I, who consume a gallon of milk a week and could have any dairy-filled ice cream I could find, love it. Every time I see the Ben and Jerry’s Milk and Cookies allergen-safe ice cream, I stock up and I’m just fatalistically waiting for it to disappear. There’s an oatmilk skyr now that I also watch with paranoia.
We also have a truly massive quantity of sunflower butter because of the two months where no stores near us (or Amazon) carried any. The worst was a month period where no oatmilk or pea milk could be found for love or money in the Twin Cities.
For myself, every time I pass the Siggi’s yogurt in the aisle, I look sadly for the yogurt with mango. Or the mango with Oui’s yogurt (now dairy-free instead). There’s a style of sanitary pads that is now gone and I hate the remaining shapes so much I switched to tampons.
All of these are luxuries. It’s not a real scarcity that I have I ‘have’ to have a certain skyr, but you’re right. I do feel betrayed. And bereaved.

I have to wear orthopedic, custom made shoes. They cost close to $2,000 (I can only afford one pair a year) and there is only one person in our state that I trust with my feet.
He is retiring.
Believe me, this is far more terrifying then tshirt shop closure.

I miss the Greek restaurant that we ate at through my entire first pregnancy, curried chicken salad from a particular store, and so many curly hair products that I loved that got discontinued.

Campbells use to sell a starter Thai soup mix that was fabulous. They discontinued it. Sigh. It was one that my whole family liked.

I like Del Monte Ketchup. I bought it for years. Now I can only buy it on-line from Amazon or Walmart at four to five times the price I used to pay.
Also, I buy Scott single ply 1000 tissue toilet paper……I think they changed their “recipe” for making it during covid, but I can’t be sure because I have no pre 2020 rolls. But it looks and feels different…. and wrong. I’m a woman with simple but inflexible tastes which makes life difficult sometimes. Why, yes, I do have a little OCD.
There are more. Sometimes, they just change a product to the point where it bears no resemblance to the original item. Don’t get me started on mini chocolate donuts in the 60’s ????

First comment…I am long limbed and have about given up shopping in regular stores because stores don’t carry tall tops and rarely long pants. Therefore, I found an online retailer that is affordable and customizes all of their clothing: Eshakti. Love, love, love their clothes from classic to trendy.
Second comment: this item is not discontinued but just doesn’t taste the same…NuttyBars…I think the fake sugar wave ruined them…sigh… there is no replacement!

Not COVID related…..just missed
My Mom always used Lawry’s garlic salt on roasted potatoes….can’t get that in Vancouver BC anymore….
Loved Cross and Blackwell’s Rosemary Redcurrant Sauce (yes it also had mint) for lamb……don’t even think they make it anymore.
So sad”……the flavours of youth gone.

that’s just the worst. I used to love this yogurt, (I’m a woman of simple pleasures) it was made by muller (quaker dairy/pepsi) and the flavor was amazing, it was peach passion fruit. It was so good I ate them at least 3 times a week for two years. Then out of nowhere and without any warning they were just gone. I was so upset I couldn’t find it anywhere. then I found out they wouldn’t be available anymore. It still exists, just not in the states.
So if you can buy it where ever you’re from, get a peach passion fruit muller yogurt and eat it for me please? I really miss that yogurt ????

Valentina salsa is in short supply!! (On knees head back screaming). I love it.
Other then that I can roll with a lot.
But in regards to your Perestroika Russianness, I have a food hoarding problem. I subconsciously buy more then needed then stop eating to preserve. I strikes up my eating disorder causing me to skip meals. I tell my kids no when I should say yes. I have gotten better at recognizing the pattern but this pandemic has hit me hard.
Being in Florida where no one cares and mask are optional. I for one am glad you have decided to to write it into Dina’s stories.
I’m glad you feel you can write out your struggles to you reader. Needing to talk about them and having no one is hard. So you write I will read????

Discontinuation of an item often used has caused 2 years of continuous moaning from my entire extended family. It was Van Camps New Orleans Red Kidney Beans. This was a staple in my home growing up. It was simple and perfect. We would fry pork chops (not breaded), make rice and the beans. My family adores this meal. They discontinued them. We have tried every substitute we can find and even made homemade red beans. Just not the same. Van Camps received over 50 unhappy emails from my family alone. We still aren’t over it. ????

Someone may have mentioned this (sorry, there are a lot of comments ????), but Kroger sells Viennetta by Good Humor. Maybe the Kroger stores in Austin, or the towns to the south, carry it? ????????

Brun lipstick #428 lancome. It’s brown and the only shade that I’ve ever felt comfortable with. It’s the only shade I ever felt looked natural on me. I wrote Lancome a letter outlining my severe disappointment with them to get me hooked on a $50/tube lipstick only to discontinue the shade. For a while I could get it off ebay and from France. But those days are gone. I still feel betrayed.

Re your back: stretch. (Well, assuming no other structural or congenital issues, of course) I’ve always had back problems. Mitigated by chiropractors, massage, Pilates and Gyrotonics. After my son was born, it was excruciating. My masseuse, who is amazing, recommended a stretching DVD: Total Stretch for Beginners with Tamilee (Amazon). I didn’t see her for 18 months. It’s very gentle and if your body will tolerate the movements, I highly recommend. I started doing every night before bed, kind of amazing that it helped me. For $3.99, might be worth a shot, anyway. Sorry you’re experiencing that, it’s just so exhausting.

Well, not so much discontinued as modified. When Hershey took over the uk chocolate company Cadbury they changed the chocolate recipe on pretty much everything including my absolute favourites the Cadbury creme egg. Only available after Christmas until Easter. Yummy runny sugar fondant centre in a dairy milk chocolate shell. Best thing ever. I had a catering pack to myself one year, 48 just for me!
Not only has it been reduced in size but they changed the chocolate to basic so it’s awful! I haven’t bought chocolate from Cadbury since. Hershey said sales had reduced, something like 70% but that was ok! Do they not know how to run a business?? Last I heard (because they are dead to me so not up to date info) they were trying to sell Cadbury.

Boyds used to make a powdered eggnog/custard creme type drink. You mixed it with hot water like cocoa. I will always miss that stuff.

While I’m a bit late to the party, I really miss Swiss Miss Chocolate pudding and Philadelphia cream cheese onion dip.
I can’t find the pudding anywhere, but whole milk Jello cooked pudding is close enough.
And the only place on-line I’ve seen the chip dip is CANADA! WTAH? I really thought it was *made* in the U.S.

My mom always made no bake oatmeal cookies for everything. Family gatherings, school bake sales, weddings, funerals etc. Anyway, no matter what she had to use ‘Crystal Wedding Oats’. It had to be that specific brand. She would go to all the grocery and mom n pop store in the area to find them. Poof, one day they just disappeared. Couldn’t find them no where, even Amazon and Walmart didn’t have any in stock. My mom was furious (actually she still is when someone mentions her cookies) we even called the company. Turns out Quaker had either bought them out or had rebranded them. And swore that there Quaker 5 minute oats where the same thing. No, Quaker they’re not. They’re really not. So, so long wedding oats, your missed in Southern Kentucky.

It’s not likely we’ll have another lockdown because more and more people are getting vaccinated in addition to wearing masks and social distancing.
In my area (Toronto), multiple Starbucks are closed. Their bottled and canned drinks are featured prominently in the grocery stores so people can still get their fix at home.
