When Gordon was in the service – this was before we moved to Texas and I learned to make proper Texmex cuisine – I made Lipton soup fajitas. I don’t remember what flavor it was, since it’s been years, I think Spicy Fiesta or Red Pepper or some silliness like that, but basically it was a mix that gave you an approximation of tortilla soup, a South-Western staple.
I would get my chicken, slice it into long slices, dip it in the mix, and sauté in a bit in the pan, and make fajitas with it. Gordon and the kids loved it. Except abruptly, my go to soup vanished from the store shelves. I finally asked people in the commissary and they looked it up for me and told me it was discontinued.
I felt bitterly betrayed. I liked the soup. I bought the soup. How dare they discontinue it? (Obviously, this is all about me.)
I have experienced other discontinued disasters. Viennetta Ice Cream cake was the best ice-cream ever. Light vanilla ice-cream with very thin layers of chocolate. So delicious. Sadly it vanished before I turned twenty. A1 used to make a sweet flavor of steak sauce, which I can no longer find. There were packets of yellow rice flavoring I used to buy with actual saffron in it. No longer available. Every time it feels a little like betrayal.
Yesterday was our 25 year anniversary. We stayed home, ordered in, and watched Invincible. Amazing show. Delta variant is raging through Texas. Kid 1’s boyfriend is sick and isolating in the garage apartment. We are monitoring him with an oximeter. He is miserable. Kid 1 has had her first shot, and Gordon and I are fully vaccinated. Kid 2 had her first shot and her boyfriend is getting his first.
We happened to live next a massive outdoor outlet mall. 250 stores, 1,000,000 sq. ft of space, the largest or second largest, depending on whom you ask, retail store in US. It is a bastion of consumerism, which is not necessarily a good thing. We get traffic from everywhere.
A few weeks ago I’ve found out that Maurices outlet in that mall has been discontinued. It fell victim to COVID. It was my go to T-shirt store. Yes, I can buy clothes online, but I am a plus sized woman and I like to try things on. Yankee Candle followed suit. It was about the only place you could get Yankee candles dirt cheap, because normally they are expensive as hell. The only two stores which caused me to brave the insanity of that parking lot are out of business.
It’s not just the stores. A few of the favorite restaurants closed and never reopened. A massage spa that was just about the only decent place to get a deep tissue massage when your back completely gives out on you is out of business. Massage was not a luxury for me. More like a hail Mary because despite my best efforts, I sit a lot.
People lost jobs. People are losing housing.
They are talking another lock down again, so I bought an extra thing of paper towels, toilet paper, and sanitary products. Just in case they get discontinued. My Perestroika Russianness was triggered. Food and goods shortages, I am on it.
Well, this post got heavy in a hurry. Normally I aim for upbeat, but I guess today is not that day. I decided not have the pandemic in Dina’s world. Because I have that power.
Let’s talk about discontinued things. What do you wish they would bring back and what substitutes did you find that were better than the old thing?

Happy Anniversary! I finally gave up dyeing my hair because every time I found a color I loved, it would be discontinued. I found that my hair is that great silver that was the fashion a few years ago, with pure white highlights. So i like my replacement and I have less aggravation in my life because no more root issues!
I hope everyone is feeling better soon and again, Happy Anniversary!

A couple of other folks have mentioned various Sara Lee products up above – for me it is the Sara Lee chocolate cake that I really really miss. But – silver lining – it’s very good for my waistline that it’s gone!
Also Van de Kamp’s sugar cookies.
And going waaaaay back, if you lived in Southern California in the 1960s, you’ll remember Helm’s Bakery, which delivered house-to-house. I remember my mom putting a big “H” sign up in the window if she wanted the Helm’s delivery man (and it was always a man) to stop. And they made the most delicious cinnamon bread! Sigh!
I guess you can tell my weakness is sweets…
Jacqueline says
Happy Anniversary!! 25 years is such a milestone. I’m glad you were able to spend it with one another.
I live in your area and cried when Maurices and Lane Bryant closed at the outlets! They had the best selection and I too love to try on lol
Thankfully, Torrid next to Hot Topic has since opened and they have great selection! If you want to brave the insanity of the parking lot and construction going on right now, I would totally try them if you haven’t yet. They will even order online and hold something you like if they don’t have your size in store.

The discontinued items that I miss are all material. I can’t really say there’s any food items that I miss.
I have coarse, frizzy, curly hair. Bath & Body Works made a hair care line when I was in high school and they had one product called Curl on Cue (there was a shampoo and conditioner) that made my hair feel and look amazing. They discontinued that after about maybe four years. I remember going with my mom to the two closest stores and buying as much of it as we could, even the small travel-size bottles. Fast forward 12 years later, and the product that has come the closest is the OGX Coconut Curls shampoo and conditioner.
Another hair care related item, the brand Aussie makes a sprunch hairspray. It used to come and either an aerosol can or a manual pump bottle and it was a flexible hold hairspray that didn’t make your hair super sticky and kind of helped with the frizz. About three years ago Aussie discontinued the aerosol can, and while the manual pump bottle was the same formula it just didn’t sit in your hair the same because it didn’t spray across as evenly. Earlier this year I went to buy a bottle and they have completely changed the formula to now make it a firmer hold hairspray. I used it once and it made my hair a sticky disaster. I still have not been able to find a replacement that held my hair is nicely as the aerosol can spray did.
The one place I really miss that closed about two years ago is Payless Shoe Source. I wear a size 12, and was always able to find shoes in my size. They had different brands, but the sizing was consistent and price was not too bad. Standard department stores do not carry women’s size 12 in store. I live in an area with multiple stores in a 5 mile radius where they sell shoes and no luck – Walmart, Target, Kohl’s, JCPenney, Belk, DSW, Famous Footwear, Ross, and Marshalls. We do have a Shoe Department that is an hour away where I am may be able to find shoes about 50% of the time I go. I also have some success online. Torrid carries bigger size shoes, but they come in an extra wide width so I don’t always need a size 12 and can do an 11 or 11.5. And I recently found Journee Collection. I ordered a pair of booties from there and they fit nicely so I may try some future purchases.
nrml says
If you can find a “Sally Beauty Supply” store, they have great hair products I’ve used for years.
I’m with you on shoe stores. I wear wide shoes, none of the ones here carry them, because you can always “just buy them bigger and they’ll fit!” Well, no, they will be too long and my feet are big enough, thank you very little.

Häagen-Dazs Once made a vanilla peanut butter swirl ice cream. My favorite of all time! It went away around the time of a peanut butter issue years back and I was so disappointed. I’ve never found an acceptable substitute.

That was great! I also miss their Mayan Chocolate. It had cinnamon and chocolate and had a deep, rich flavor.

Oooh, I feel that. Some items departed the shelves of Trader joe’s that I miss – everything from vanilla cat cookies to the lemon-ginger water for which I still pine.
Other departed include Emporium Capwells, The Limited (original – socks, sweaters, and pants heaven for me), Papyrus stores (therapy in a mall), used book stores – especially the ones crammed into unusual spots and locales, Edies (soda shop), Blum’s coffee crunch cake, and China Rain fragrance by the original Body Shop in Berkeley.
Hang in there and sending healthy wishes.

our local used book stores only buys used books that are up to 6 months old, that’s it. why bother? it’s the older ones that are the treasures, now you have to go to good will to find them.

I lulsed to love a candy bar called “Seven Up.” It had seven different truffle-style things including a chocolate covered cherry in one bar. Now I just have to buy the different kinds separately. Insert dramatic sigh here.
Laurence says
Thanks to you, I now know I’m a “harbinger of failure”, I feel better!
I loved a weird chocolate cake in a can that Mont Blanc (a French company) used to make. It was light and fluffy, with a chocolate sauce and I really loved it.
More recently, Bonne Maman tried to launch a really good vanilla ice cream, with just cream, eggs, sugar and vanilla. It was not available in a lot of stores and it’s disappeared.
Same for hard shell tacos, which you couldn’t find in France when I was a kid, then finally arrived in France. Apparently they didn’t find their public, because I can’t find them anymore. Thankfully my brother just came from Wyoming, with a nice big suitcase.
😉
Ahhh the souvenirs, thanks a lot for the smiles and fond memories

Happy belated anniversary! And I hope that Kid 1’s boyfriend recovers quickly with no long term problems. And to answer the question, my favorite style of jeans was discontinued I haven’t found a replacement yet. They seem to have fallen out of fashion. No telling when they will come back as fashionable.

The saddest thing is when you buy the same products from the same company as those 20 (ick!) years ago, supposedly exactly the same traditional recipe but it just doesn’t taste the same…
Had it with ketchup, wafles or ice cream I remeber from my childhood. I think maybe it would be better if they discontinued making them than pretended they didn’t change the ingridients 🙁

My mom would say the chocolate icing mix that was used in the original tunnel of fudge cake. She kept a box for years just in case she wanted to make the cake. She never would though because “once it was gone, it was gone” My brother took his life in his hands & carefully opened the bottom of the box, used the mix, and carefully placed the box back on the shelf. I believe it was years before my mother discovered the deception.

GoodHumor has put a version of this Viennetta Ice Cream cake in our Colorado Springs grocery stores. I’d like McD to bring back the Apple Cider BBQ sauce and Dunkin to make the chocolate crullers bars, again. My husband wants the Garlic Salsa returned that Doritos had & pulled with almost no warning.

Nathan’ deli mustard in the wide mouth 16 oz jar. The best! I’m from Brooklyn (NYC, not Texas) the original home of Nathan’s in Coney Island.
There is no other wide mouth ja mustard now (and under $2). It’s all stupid squeeze bottles.
nrml says
Bam! Nothing like sticking in that knife and spreading the mustard around! If I may suggest that you purchase wide-mouth canning jars for jellies and dump the squeeze bottle into it to scoop it out as needed, perhaps that will help you. If it’s the same mustard, if just the delivery of it to your food is the issue, this may help you. You need to get a little creative.

There were these gingerbread sandwich cookies with lemon creme & zest I loved, but I’ve not seen them for over a decade.
I also miss Sonic’s fried pickles and their cream slashes.

I miss Teavana’s maharaja chai and samurai mate chai (think that’s what it was called). The combination of both was awesome. I finally tried one that’s supposed to be copycat and it tasted disgusting to me. I wish Starbucks would sell it.

Back in the 70s when I was homeless someone let me take showers in their home and they had Nature’s Gate herbal conditioner. I used it happily for years and years. It had awesome things like myrrh in it.
Then the formula was changed. I don’t understand why, company sold or something and maybe too expensive to make? It just wasn’t the same.
I yearn for a time machine so I can go back and stock up.
I’ve lost track of missing food items. Snackin’ cakes were great and so easy to make when I was a brand new baker. You mixed it in the package and added vinegar. There used to be a one skillet version of lasagne (not hamburger helper) that was awesome.
Some items disappeared from the health food store and locally, we used to have some artisanal foods that are no longer made. I was also a fan of Black Muslim Bakery products like their whole wheat cinnamon rolls and bean pies. Wha Guru Chews were a favorite though these days I’d lose a crown or a filling on them.
Speaking of fajitas, Cost Plus used to sell a spice mix called “fajita dust” which you simply sprinkled or on your protein and veggies while cooking. No similar mixes work as well. I have a great marinade I make now but this was easy when I was in a hurry.
Tapati says
I’d forgotten but when I was a teen in the mid-70s Doritos had a version of their Nacho Cheese flavor that I really loved. Then they changed it to the darker orange version and I was so unhappy.

I just made a permanent move to Japan. Just got out of the mandatory quarantine even with all my shots. So, I expect I will be feeling American food nostalgia in a couple of months. Then I will have to put on my Pioneer bonnet and figure how to make things by scratch or alchemy. haha I’ve lived overseas before so it’s nothing new. I once wanted to eat Red Lobster biscuits?? I had to make by scratch the “Biscuit mix” to tranform into the RL ones. Haha On a personal note, everyone please stay safe and healthy.

I feel your discontinued pain. My childhood/teen comfort food was ridged potato chips with Bacon & Horseradish cream cheese dip (Philadephia brand). I was so sad when they stopped making it in favor of strawberry. Ick. There have been several items like this since and it’s always a pain. Apparently, I am not the mass market they want to cater to.

The American way of life? I feel like my childhood way of living has been discontinued. I live in Hawaii, we had very few places to eat and shop growing up, but we did have some fun attractions for tourists that us locals would go to as well. Over the top ice cream shops, water parks, game zones with skiball and hand hockey, drive in theaters, etc… they are all gone. Every single place has closed over the years. My kids will never experience that kind of old school Americana, and they didn’t grow up with it, so if they were suddenly dropped into it now, I’m not even sure they would care. I have seen that rollerskating is making a come back, hooray! Something survived the digital take over. This Olympics is the lowest watched ever. I encourage my kids to watch, we enjoy it, but the GO TEAM USA feeling is just not there like it used to be.

I can’t think of anything that was discontinued but would like to chime in for proper sizing. Candy bars, gum, chips and such from like 40 years ago were huge compared to the same brand today, le sigh.

My problem isn’t so much discontinued products unless a”type” no longer available which counts as discontinuation.
Specifically Quality.
I currently am in a fight with Sears over my $2000 refrigerator.
Average price point for a average refrigerator…which should last based on the average 10-13 (15 if no pets and preventative maintenance like dusting/vacuuming coils happe) years with little to no problem.
This is a Kenmore which is really a LG with a Kenmore badge (very common practice now). This product has computer boards and engineering and blah blah blah blah to supposedly increase value and perform wonderful things like conserve energy.
In reality LG has already lost 6 class actions for this family of products some to the US Government because they taught the computer boards to cheat the tests to achieve “energy star” compliance think Volvo and it’s emissions test fiasco.
This family of products has everything to confuse and lure consumers but it lacks sufficient Insulation and horsepower (undersized compressor) to actually keep ice frozen or freeze it in the first place or to keep milk from spoiling. Actual LG branded customers have routes for resolution…but mine being Kenmore has an additional layer of middlemen and legal departments to avoid responsibility for these defective products.
Anyway … I miss products that function (do their job) and companies that don’t engineer the products to fail to force the consumer back into the market thereby repeating the circle of buy, frustration, fail due to legal and middleman obstacles, dispose, buy again…
And people wonder why our oceans are full of plastics and our landfills are overflowing.

Forgot this key info for anyone that read the above
The product started underperforming just after the first year and started catastrophically failing year 5 (causing more waste food not to mention time)
So in short I miss non disposable everything they need to discontinue trash products and we as consumers need to shop smarter focus on core function and reject extra shiny trash (ie core for refridge is cooling not internet connectivity and no my product doesn’t have that but the next model up probably did)
reeder says
I look for less complicated, repairability including available parts, and hopefully better quality.
Dyson gets my admiration for being available via online chat and stocking 10+ year old corded vacuum parts for a fair price. Sure, a Samsung or LG cordless stick vac might be the better performer for the price but I know I’ll be able to get a Dyson battery or replacement canister in 3-5 years since they’re so popular.
Samsung and LG refrigerators have bad reps. Plenty of people seem to be ok with theirs but plenty of failures, too. I bought a French Door Whirlpool and measured the temperature with a data logger. Yeah. I’m weird. But the middle temp setting is actually a bit higher than 40 at times with an empty fridge. It keeps temp better when I have stuff in it.
Strike says
I have lots of hardwood floors and the carpet I have I’m ok with breaking out the 30 year old rainbow vacuum … yes is not as convenient as a stick rechargeable vac but I got the rainbow from my mother when she became to old to deal with its size. It will be functioning and functioning extremely well when my non-existent grandchildren die.
Another example of this is the older stainless steel Vitamix’s before they changed into the plastic garbage they sell now.
I 100% agree that an empty refrigerator is more work for the compressor to keep cool … anecdotal observations leads me to believe that having solids and liquids that have been cooled to X in either the refrigerator or freezer compartments act as buffers/insulators to prevent temperature fluctuations. Which makes sense because air gains/looses/equalizes faster than liquids or solids. The key thing is to load it up without impeding airflow because that’s how the cool is circulated from coils.
Having a thermostat with data logging is a wonderful tool to use and have.

I remember Jello making a desert that when you finished it made three layers – it was all in one box, one process. It was regular Jello on the bottom with the top layer the most airy. I seem to remember you used a mixmaster to whip it.
Anyway, that was years and years ago and I haven’t gotten over losing it yet.
Susan says
It was 1-2-3 Jello and though not as covenient, I make a version of it that is really good and a big hit. I get plastic cups at the dollar store and usually use strawberry jello and cool whip… bottom layer just regular jello, put in fridge till firm… Second layer with jello and cool whip blended together with my electric mixer, add on top of jello layer, back to fridge till firm, then top layer with a greater amount of cool whip added to the jello, chill till firm. I am sure other non-dairy whipped toppings could be used, but cool whip is my go to. I try to have each layer be 1/3 size. Tried to post a picture of finished product, but did not show up as an option. Because of lesser amounts for each layer, it does not take as long to firm.

Nabisco Famous Chocolate Cookies are almost impossible to find and I like to occasionally substitute them for graham crackers in cheese cake.
Trader Joe’s breaks my heart too often to list, but the thing from them that I miss most is the Garden Vegetable Lasagna that’s been gone for years. If they ever do away with the frozen samosas I will loose it!

It started to disappear from the shelves during the start of the pandemic. I hoped, like TP, it would come back. I bought all I could at Amazon before it was gone. I bought it at Petco and Petsmart. I even found myself driving to various FleetFarms because I read online they still may have it.
I broke down and bought chunky and mashed it myself LOL, but now that’s no longer available, too!! I can only get it in an expensive multipack where there are only 4 ocean fish chunky single-serves in the 12 pack.
I know this sounds silly—we’re in a pandemic for goodness’ sake…but how can I be happy when my furry friend is not. Sigh

The most “panic buying” I have done during this pandemic has been of cat food. 5 picky seniors with various health issues and every other month I can’t get at least one type of food at least one of them is suppose to have. When a case of the Royal Canin Aging was going for over $100 on Amazon and wasn’t available at all on Chewy, I freaked. Even friskees was getting hard to find. When their food was finally available again I bought cases and cases and I now have an entire corner of my kitchen devoted to cat food and feel quite comfortable with my decision to never have less than at least a month and a half worth of “backstock” on hand at all times, lol!
