Turn the sound up.
It’s not the case fans. I have cleaned everything and tested them. It’s running hot, too, and I am doing zip right now, except accessing the internet.
So. Distracting. Like nails on a chalkboard. I can hear it through headphones. It’s making it really hard to concentrate. Oy.
In happier news, Magic Gifts is being readied for recording by Graphic Audio. Mod R has just finished some minor edits. Vikings lo!
Gordon and I had a completely ridiculous series idea related to Vikings. Not that long ago, someone parodied a recent romance book that had something to do with a ballerina and a physical therapist by writing a bogus snippet, which was intentionally hilarious. Then people became confused and thought that the parody was the actual book. It’s terrible when this happens, and the only thing you can do is to use it to your advantage by changing your promo to “Behold, the book that inspired one of the most popular parodies of all time!”
This actually happened before to an author that had somehow mashed Vikings, modern military, and either vampires or angels, I don’t remember now. As we were talking about it, Gordon wondered if a Viking mashup could actually work. Turns out it could. We hashed the possible plot out. Lots of gods, modern military, and other funky things.
I am not sure to write it down and trunk it or to not bother because it is absurd, and it’s not like we are suffering from the lack of things to do.
Well, onward. To Valha- Wait, wrong Pantheon. To Nav. We are going to Nav. Need to fight through the buzz and get Roman and Finn through this emergency.
Barbara Swanson says
I have utter trust that IF you decide to write something out–regardless of genre issues, weirdness or just plain “WTH”, you will –if you choose/are compelled to complete–end with a book I will purchase and enjoy.

At our new office building, we have an office located right next to the server room where you could hear the constant humming of machines. Luckily we have some very tolerable staff who didn’t mind the noise and volunteered to have their desks moved to that room. I personally, could never though…
AP says
I have sensitive hearing and that noise would drive me nuts! I hope you find the culprit soon!
If HA writes it, the BDH will come – Viking mashup or whatever else your creative minds want to throw at us! 🤗
Anastasia says
You know, if you write it, we will read it!!!
Louisa Paarsmarkt says
Oh, a new idea for us to want you to write so we can read it! The BDH will always want it, so thanks for a new “I wants it!”
Hopefully whatever is causing it is found, and soon, and is a quick and easy fix, since that sound is pretty irritating!
Tempest says
I think y’all know by now that if you write it, we will come. Whatever you write, yep, we’re there with our one-click fingers ready. But that’s the BDH, I do realize that there are other considerations about where to spend your time and energy.
Yay! Graphic Audio Happy Dance!
RJ says
Ditto!
I am definitely on board for another BDH Graphic Audio Happy Dance too.
Char says
misophinia. although I usually only suffer from it when kids are whining.
Dawn says
Standard troubleshooting in our house. Remove the case cover, turn on machine and using a pen, stick it carefully in every fan to stop it until you find the culprit and replace it. If you’re having overheating issues it’s LIKELY CPU, GPU or PSU fan. And yes, that would drive me nuts as well.
Can’t wait to read WHATEVER you write – and good luck with the PC issue!
Ilona says
That’s what I meant when I said it wasn’t the case fans. 🙂
Kelly says
Try all other fans…could also be something hanging just a teensy bit into the fan’s path (I had that happen once, drove me nuts till I finally figured it out). I’ve had to put an air filter in the room to cover annoying repetitive sounds like that before as well. G’luck figuring out the irritating culprit.
Mike Guernsey says
Might be the power supply fan or graphics card fans. Definitely sounds like a cable or something getting hit by a fan of some sort.
Susan M. says
I came here to +1 all the things. Sounds like a GPU fan from the video and I would definately buy, read and love the viking series.
Adrianne says
Circuit board alarm? Please make sure everything is backed up!
I would so love something hilarious right now. I know the horde favors dark and scary but I love your lighter offerings.
R Coots says
That almost sounds like the noise one of my old (standard) hard drives made after getting knocked too hard on the side. But if that were the case, I’d assume the computer not work at all.
Also, will absolutely take a Viking mash up from you. That’d be awesome!
Cassandra Beams says
Do you have a mechanical platter or a solid state hard drive? Because that sounds like a mechanical drive that is on the verge of failing.
Not normally a poster, but I’ve lost a lot of hard work due to a drive going to Valhalla early and I’d hate to lose any of your work!!
Ilona says
Everything is backed up to Dropbox. Gordon bought me a new pc. Fingers crossed it holds until the new one arrives.
Jan says
I like Gordon’s solution; if you can’t find the problem quickly, replace and move on. Not worth your valuable time (more stories please ) and that noise will drive you crazy. Good luck.
Marija says
Write it, please!
Megan says
that sound is the reader arm on a hard drive, back up the disk and replace it
Norbert says
No, if a hard disk makes this kind of sound, it does not work any more. It‘s a broken fan.
Norbert says
Also, making a backup while the computer is overheating might kill it completely.
Kate says
Two things:
1. It sounds like an internal cooling fan. If it is not and your computer is older, back up everything! I lost an entire computer and everything on it many years ago because I ignored a similar sound that turned out to be something starting to scrape on the spinning hard drive. If it is newer, ignore this warning, your computer will be solid state.
2. Vikings – overheard conversation: “You should explore your viking heritage.” “What heritage? They were gangs with boats.”
A Korbel says
Ooohh, a return visit to the Neo-Vikings? I love it.
Ducks and runs.
Diane Mc. says
You would have a blast writing for entertainment and it would be so fun to read!
MariaZ says
Please combine with previous comment if possible.
Sandra Hill also had a romance series about regular old age Vikings that were hysterical. I remember one scene involving beehives, someone’s head, and honey that was rolling on the floor laughing trying not to poop and ribs hurting the next day funny.
Bibliovore says
Yep vampire Viking angels.
RoadRunner says
That sound from your computer is definitely a fan rubbing against something. I would check the fan on your microprocessor, especially if your computer is reporting that it’s getting hot. Usually, the problem is a cable shifts and makes contact with the fan blades.
Good luck.
Norbert says
CPU-Fans usually have a higher pitch. My money is on the PSU fan.
Patricia Schlorke says
Depending on the age of your desktop, it might be time to replace it. I agree with the others to make sure everything is backed up, so if the computer does decide to do a death dive, you have everything to put back on a new computer.
Going back to Nav tomorrow to see how Roman and Farhang are doing. It will interesting. 🙂
Patricia Schlorke says
I forgot “be” in It will be interesting.
Charley says
It sounds to me like a power supply failing, possibly increasing the voltage = heating.
Norbert says
That sounds like a fan that needs to be replaced. Either in the power supply or on the CPU, or on the graphics board, if you have one that needs extra cooling. If the noise starts without any delay when powering on, it is probably the one in the power supply. Replace the whole PSU if that is the case; consumer PCs usually do not have separate fan units.
Anyway, Viking mashups sound great; I“ll buy it if you write it! (Of course, I will buy anything you write, so that is not really an incentive…)
MariaZ says
Sandra Hill – Viking Navy Seals (love this series) & Vangels – Viking Vampire Angels
Jan says
Thank you Maria, found it in the Libby Library. It’s now in my queue so after morning chores . . . It’s tea, cookies and a new book.
Amelie says
I feel like in general any time you throw Vikings into the mix, regardless of whether it’s appropriate to the genre/time period, ridiculousness ensues? Anyways I think at this point most of us will read whatever you write, even if it involves very disparate elements that don’t usually go together.
As for the computer woes, I have no idea. I have a Mac so whenever it decides to stop cooperating, I bring it to the Apple store.
Breann says
+1! I like the sound of it! Plus, I think we could all use a little non-real life absurd. 🤗
Breann says
Woops! This was supposed to be in reply to the first comment. Oh well. 🤦♀️
Donna A says
Osh. Vikings. I’ve not read any Viking fiction per se which is not to say I haven’t read any Norse based fiction (which I have enjoyed in certain fantasy books).
Viking is such a laden term with connotations and definitions and history and geography. And bad behaviour.
During covid my brother convinced my mother that Vikings was a great series. And we were isolating together so that meant me watching it too. And I did enjoy it. Despite glaring historical inaccuracies.
So. I guess Vikings are good?
What’s the paraphrase? If you write it they will read it?
Bring it on.
Pomeranian Mom says
Check your power supply unit, it sounds like it’s fan is going out.
Kelticat says
You should know better. The BDH will now be demanding a viking Mashup comic story.
njb says
Funny! Thanks for brightening s dull overcast day!
Kevin says
Not sure about the fan itself, but if you are running Windows they just ghosted a new AI assistant into this weeks update, which immediately made my computer slow and hot, despite being an uber-machine I built myself.
Marianne Almås says
I’m here for your Viking mashup. As a Norwegian I can’t wait ❤️
Keera says
If you write it we will read it!
Mary E Welch says
You write it…I will read it , and throw blessings on your heads for the enjoyment there of
A says
Please write it. Even just to expel it from your mind and save it.
If you had the idea, then it must be a good one. 🙂
Now we are curious
Sjik says
Also, write it, label it comedy, and then find a new audience that way! I mean, we’ll all come along too obviously.
Melisande says
Have you checked for gremlins, acorns, ferrets, miscellaneous things that go bump in the night? Roman roaming the harddrive?
But seriously backup if you haven’t recently*, there are even nifty ways to back up drives by removing them connecting them to a nifty clone drive thing that does it external of the actual computer they belong to. You will need a tame computer expert for that, but the good ones can be lured in with, some fine science fiction, food, and scattered hardware. If you want an older one Pratchett and some single malt will separate them from the herd. 😁
+1 For Viking mashup!
*old computer geeks recommend backing up every 2 mins preferably to an external server in a bunker that is backed up to stone tablets every 10. The terror is real!!! 😃
Patricia Schlorke says
That sounds like something Bug would do. 😀
Debra L. says
There aren’t a ton of moving parts inside of a case, which is why the suggestion is always going to be to check the fans. (Regardless of trying to head off that suggestion, haha.)
I don’t want to make any assumptions but I figure you’ve run it on like a kitchen table with the side open already to watch what happens when it’s open. If not, it’s not a bad option to at least try. Alternatively, the fans could just be overreacting from the heat; as in there’s nothing particularly wrong with them but they could be less precise when running faster to compensate for the higher temps. Aka you would only get noise when the fans are trying to spin up super fast to vent the excess heat but wouldn’t make noise when it’s relatively cooler and they don’t have to work as hard.
Is this a prebuilt or a custom? Either way if you’re having temp issues you could reseat the CPU heatsink with new thermal paste. Just carefully remove old thermal paste with alcohol and apply new. Especially if the PC is older. If the theory about it being overworked fans not spinning as well is correct, then this could possibly alleviate it.
It does sound like some kind of rotating noise, I’m thinking like a playing card on a bike wheel. Only fans or maybe a HDD (though doubtful it would sound like this) have any kind of “spinning” bits that would create a noise like that. I’m sorry if you end up getting a lot of people screaming FANS at you though. I get that it’s very frustrating and I would be super frustrated as well. Both by the FANS!! and the noise itself. Good luck figuring it out though! I hope you solve it soon.
Debra L. says
A loose screw or unseated component is another option? But I think as far as fairly simple solution attempts the thermal paste isn’t a bad choice. Reseating RAM, graphics card, and double checking screws would be another thing to try. Sorry for the self-reply, but thought of it later.
Carla says
Oh man, that constant clicking would have me coming out of skin after a few minutes. A flickering light is just as bad. I toast your perseverance. Skal! 😆
Kiri Guyaz says
Valhalla! YES!!! An Ilona Andrews Viking book?? I would die for that! EEEEEEE!!!!!💜💜💜
And I’m still devouring Roman, never fear—
😂
Stacey says
I remember reading something about Viking vampires in a modern setting a few years ago…. I think it was hilarious but wasn’t supposed to be.
Lynn says
The thermal paste on your video card has dried out. That is why it is making that noise and running hot. Simple fix on a desk top is to take the card out, open it , smear on a little thermal paste and it will be fine. Probably going to have to take it to a professional though since it looks like you have a laptop. Probably under a hundred bucks.
Laura says
I’ll read anything y’all write. You rock!!
IreneMBBT says
I only got through a handful of comments so don’t know if anyone referred you to Sandra Hill’s Viking series which has Vikings & military. She writes romance with lots of comedy. They’re a little dated but still fun and I recently started collecting kindle versions as they go on sale.
Jean says
I have my Viking World Tour t-shirt ready in case of a Viking mashup story!! (Viking World Tour is an homage to the rock band world tour t-shirts.)
I’m half Scots-Irish from my mom and half Welsh/English from my dad; Viking influence is big in the history of the British Isles.
In re: the computer problem –
My dad and I had a theory about cars: Turn key, car go. Car not go, call mechanic “help, help, car not go”.
This applies to all machines, including computers.
Tankster says
Not a pc expert so take this with a grain of salt. It sounds like something isn’t seated right. Make sure everything that uses screws is screwed together correctly. Also make sure that stuff like your ram is secured as well. As for running hot you might have to replace the thermal paste the cpu cooler uses to cool the cpu. Thermal paste does eventually become completely dry. It’s easy to get a small tube of it off Amazon. Use rubbing alcohol/nail polish remover and it’ll clean the parts and not damage them.
Leslie D says
This sounds AMAZING already!! I highly encourage proceeding 🙂 *crossed fingers*
ElfN says
I rebuild my computer every couple years. Sometimes two years in a row, sometimes longer depending on how things are going. Rebuild is EASY. Run Belarc Adviser to get a list of your components, enter the components you want to keep in PCPartPicker.com, select the components you want to updated and you’re ready to rock.
I added a new video card (went from 2g mem to 12g mem), changed cases to accommodate the length of the new motherboard . . . I’m not unhappy but this is a bit noisier than my last setup. It runs really cool and the upgraded video is a plus so I’m electing to not complain.
Next update . . . new motherboard/additional memory.
Sue says
Iff’n the BDH gets a vote on the Viking mash up, I vote trunk it. Maybe someday you will need something hilarious to work on.
Sorry the computer is oy! Maybe since it appeared spontaneously it will disappear the same way. Hopefully? Maybe?
Claudia says
Yikes, that noise would get on my last nerve! Plus I’d be fretting about my computer. The SSD of my last laptop failed catastrophically last year, and I’m still mad at myself because I lost months of data.
Good luck getting that resolved! I hope there’s a quick, cheap, and easy solution.
jewelwing says
Definitely write it down and trunk it if you’re not going to work on it right away. It might be just the thing for the doldrums one day. Pretty sure the entire BDH will be here for it if you ever get around to it. I may have to look up Sandra Hill now…
Leigh-Ayn says
First of all the fan does not sound very well. I would just turn everything off and walk away and hope that it sorts itself out!
Secondly, Viking mashup! yes please! you write, BDH will buy!
Thirdly- oh I am curious as to what the parody was about the ballerina ! Can you remember who it was?
It reminds me of Fan Girl by Rainbow Rowell – and everyone loved the “fan fic” scattered throughout the book that Rainbow landed up writing the actual book the fan fic was based on!
Sue sweeney says
I had an aunt whose car engine started making a similar noise. She turned up the stereo. 😆 Computers always fail at the worst possible time. fact of nature. Keep the lid off to help cooling and find some good noise cancelling headphones. or maybe a helmet with horns…
Leena Garandan says
Vikings ho! You know the BDH would read anything you write in an instant 🤣 hoping you find the cause of the noise and eliminate it – so. HARD!! Looking forward to the next Roman chapter
Angela says
I admit it.
I thought the parody you’re referencing was the Real Blurb.
it is so amazingly ridiculous, however considering what some people Kindle selfpub these days I could believe it was real!
did feel bad for the author tho.
Noybswx says
Sounds like someone bought your computer gremlins a drum kit. hope you’re not having to listen to it for very long! As always. looking forward to everything you write (or don’t, as sometimes it’s just nice to toss around ideas and see which ones cling like little octopi)
Kat in NJ says
Vikings? Yes please (but only when and if you feel like writing it, because it sounds like it would be a hoot to write and then for us to read!)😁
Noisy computer? NO, thank you. That would definitely drive me insane (although my family would probably say “short trip!”)
After your work has all been relocated to the new computer that Gordon is getting you, I highly recommend you take your old computer outside and beat it to smithereens with a mallet. It will be so satisfying and you will feel so much better. Good luck! 💕💕
Bookworm says
I’m pretty sure if you ask BDH they will tell you to write all the things, which feels less than helpful. My own feelings are also not helpful since I absolutely read everything that you write (and buy in multiple formats).
Raye says
Yes to Vikings! I am happy to read whatever y’all are enthusiastic about!

We truly are the BDH 🥰

Patricia says
I’m wheezing, you’re right 😭
Abigale says
If you can spare the computer, maybe you should have a computer repair shop look at it after you back everything up. If they can repair it, they will give you a quote. If not, then it’s time to look at a new more indestructible computer.
wingednike says
Have fun with the Viking story! It can be your de-stress piece whenever your other stories are giving you kittens.
I used to read a ton of Sandra Hill. I heard the stories got more and more ridiculous…but also heard that she deliberately went as crazy as possible just to see if the books would still be picked up.
Patricia says
You’re telling me the Navy Seal Vampire Angel Viking story was actually meant as a parody? I got an ARC back then and couldn’t believe wtf I was reading. Don’t remember the author anymore, but it left so many question marks in my head..
Susan Ward says
Sandra Hill I’ve read them.
Patricia says
Oh fantastic, thank you! Maybe you remember.. was there also timetravel or was that the missing trope?
SueBKat says
Patricia – The vampire Vikings just lived through time, same as us, except longer. The Vikings and Navy were the time travelers. 2 different set series.
Susan Ward says
I’ve know the Viking Angel Vampire books you refer to. They were written by Sandra Hill . She refers to them as Vangels in the series and their opponents are Lucipires. They are crazy and hysterical and I personally loved them and for good measure she threw in The seven deadly sins. A Viking set series from you is some thing I would love to read.
Ela says
I had the same noise, and turned out one of the ventilator’s blades was bent. Hard to notice but the noise was SO annoing.
Wendy says
love Vikings! they are trendy right now. 😄 but I also love Roman, so whatever your current project is, I’ll definitely read it… again…and again…and again….
Rita says
That mashup sounds like some books Sandra Hill was writing a while back. I have enjoyed a lot of her books but that combo was the one that broke me!
Bill G says
“Need to fight through the buzz and get Roman and Finn through this emergency.” And, perhaps, to get Farhang reunited with his body? Who knows, but the Authorlods!! (And, apparently, all without Viking longboats!)

Many years ago I was fitted with new hearing aids at the VA. A few weeks later I began hearing beeping and whistling as I drove in my car which had 27 built in computers. The odd noises stopped when t turned the car off. The noises began when I would enter a modern computerized building.
Back to the VA I went. A new receptionist asked what was my problem, my response, “My hearing aids can hear computers talking to each other.” She looked at me as if I was in the wrong section, this guy should go to the physchiatrist next door. She asked “What are they saying to each other Sergeant Major?” My response, “Beep Beep.” She took the hearing aids to the back office.
In a few minutes, red faced, she told me, I so sorry I didn’t believe you. They need to be calibrated.

You tease! We are the bdh! we would love all the things. Cannot wait for Roman. Honestly I know the serials are a lot of work but they make my heart sing no matter how bad the week is- and this week that included stroke and heart attack tests because my new medication caused a rib dislocation. And Roman was a little ray of black happiness in that. x
Kit says
Whatever you write, I will read.
Regarding that sound and what you are experiencing, my husband says there might be some dried up condensers that are acting up but from the video he can’t tell much. This could potentially lead the router to stop working and I don’t think they will repair it, if it still has the warranty they will change it with a new one, if it’s out, then you’ll have to buy another.
Maria says
A whole series on viking vampire angels by Sandra Hill. Very entertaining. She also has a series on time travelling vikings. Laugh out loud reads.
Shannon says
Oy, indeed! Definitely rage-worthy, nerve scraping sound–this classifies as torture!
Can’t wait till if/when the viking mash up bears fruit.
Stephanie says
This comment section reminds me of a certain KD scene about mercs arguing about the proper method to get the smell off of boots (;
Ilona says
I know, right? “It’s the case fans! Here is how to replace them.” It’s not the case fans. I tested the fans. “Have you tried turning the fans?”
It is likely the power supply though. Fingers crossed it holds for the next few days.
Patricia Schlorke says
Good luck! May the computer god grant you your wish until you get the new computer.
KMD says
the bearings in one of your fans has worn out. it happens, fans dont last forever. last year, mine started making a big clunk every few seconds. I replaced them with Arctic P14. (a five pack was like 40 dollars. depending on if yours are sized 140 or 120mm, they might be cheaper) I powered down my pc, took the old ones out and put the new ones in. Super easy. (i did buy different screws because my case is black and the screws that came with it were silver, and I’m fussy). they are so quiet, way better than the corsairs I had before.
Gsg says
Try flashing your BIOS. Also, look for updates from the hardware manufacturer. people always think of Microsoft updates, but the others are overlooked.
Sounds like your processor is running hot, and if you have ruled out Microsoft pushing an update, hardware update are the next thing to try.
Rose says
Okay but…. One shot on the Viking spin off? Maybe write down the plot outline and the idea and file it under “when we need another Maggie.” Please? Pretty please?
Shlomi Harif says
Shlomi has computer guy, here:
1. Not the case fans, but do you have liquid cooling for your CPU? GPU?
2. Do you have a fan for your CPU? GPU?
3. Wacky but possible: something electrical related to the fans that’s causing a short/reset.
Since you said they’re getting hot, I’ll bet on #1 or #2. And that’s something to fix ASAP
Chris says
Please save it or you’ll wish you had. It’s like throwing out that old pair of jeans or boots or (you fill in the blank) only to find out a few months later that they are all over the runways as the new, wonderful,Must-have of the season.
And you never know where revisiting your notes will lead you- perhaps to a yet unimagined literary land.
I save all the swatches and notes of my newly invented knit stitches, because even though they aren’t right for what I’m doing now, they always seem to inform something later. even the bad ones save me time, because I can look at them and know not to try them again.
Your loyal court(BDH) will love anything you create.
CHRIS says
You are a servant of the Microsoft god and all the machines he has fostered, and sometimes he is unkind to you and laughing at you . But you have the last laugh because you can write all sorts of great stuff relating to Roman because you know how he feels🤭🙃
SueBKat says
You do realize that y’all are our personal field of dreams, don’t you? If you build it, the BDH will come (and buy)!
Tanya says
All the Vikings…seriously…you guys write it, I’ll read it no questions asked. <3
PamG says
The whole viking/vampire/angel thing– is that Sandra Hill? Seems like I read about that on Smart B*tches, Trashy Books a number of years ago. Sounded cray-cray and it was–mostly in a good way. IIRC, the comedy was more slapstick-sitcom than your usual character based humor.
If you do a Vikingesque mashup, can I put in a word for the art and design and also funerary customs–not just burning long ships, but revenants and bog burials. At any rate, if you build it, they (I) will come
Denisetwin says
Oh wow military Vikings! How cool is that!
Kelly says
One nice thing about Vikings is that men and women held nearly equal status. Unfortunately their history was mainly oral and the Christians who wrote it down left out most of the women. The stories from Vikings in Iceland seem to have survived with the women included.
Maria Dukes says
I agree with Lady Swanson on this one. I love Vikings and Valkyrie, you could add that too!! Not nearly enough books with Valkyrie in them, in my opinion. Keep up the awesome writing and I cannot wait to see what Roman and Finn get into in this next chapter! Love your guys’ work!!
Margaret K says
Would read! I mean, Hugh, started out as a goof, and we love the end result!!
K says
Didn’t someone pen an April Fools joke years ago? That’s how we got Iron and Magic. So don’t trunk it. It’ll be devoured by us, your fans.
Alice says
Didn’t you replace your desktop last year???? Please do the Viking series, the Neo-Vikings in Kate were hysterical!
Alison says
Ditto!!
Alison says
Do it! the vikings in the Kate Daniels world are hilarious!
Allison says
Just my opinion, but everybody needs a little absurdity! And yes, I am that goof in the friend group and at work – what makes you ask? If genre mashups are as much of a fun romp to write as they are to read, maybe it’s the right thing for you! I know I’d line up to buy it.
Bill from NJ says
overheating could also be a GPU or CPU failing, when they do this they start drawing a lot of power and generate heat. Unless a cooling fan is jammed or has broken blades, they likely aren’t the cause of the overheating, it is they can’t keep up with something overheating.
One thing I highly recommend, on any machine you get , get it with SSDI drives, you won’t regret it. I am using a 13 year old macbook air with an SSDI and it is still chugging along. Conventional hard drives have bigger capacities and are cheaper, but the SSDI is worth its weight in gold, they are faster and they don’t break down.
Tammy says
That Viking mash up sounds like the Sandra Hill series, Viking Navy Seals and Viking Vampire Angels.
AK says
VIKING NAVY SEALS?! Oooh! I want! (Almost as much as I want the House Andrews anythingtheywriteincludingthephonebook.)
LOL!

Was about to weigh in on your potential noise source till I read the comments from the world of experts out posting quite pointedly to your issue. It would take a month to even try out all the solutions offered. New Computer it is!! Do you name them? Your computers that is? And to the real point of this comment. I will be trying whatever you offer in whatever direction you choose. Not sure if I will continue down some particular rabbit hole but you have earned my willingness to dive in. Period.
Ann says
Yuck, Vikings. However, if you two write it, I know that I will love it. So, Viking away.
C. says
+1
Strike says
I know you said you checked the fans.
I’ve also read ALL the comments saying it’s X,Y, or Z fan.
I won’t tell you that it definitely sounds like a fan wire rubbing on a fan or
a fan rubbing on its protective shroud/casing (bad wobbly center pin/bearing).
I will suggest you that you could roll up a 8×11 sheet of paper and make a small-ish funnel.
Use the funnel to “isolate” the sound to trace/isolate the noisy component.
The paper sound funnel and walking it across the computers internals as you listen through it should lead you right to your problem.
My last desktop pc had no less than 7 separate fans (some that always ran others that cycled on/off intermittently )
power supply,
videocard,
cpu, and at least 4 for the general case … granted they also were positioned in a fashion to pull air across memory chips & SSD’s bays (or mechanical drive bays …not that it had any)
Computers typically only have 2 types of “moving parts”
1 fans
2 drives
The battle is to find ALL the sneaky hidden moving parts (fan or drive)
Best of luck!

The Uhaul needs engine work. When sitting at rest, you can hear ONE piston chuffing. Very annoying. Most of my drive was freeway, so not much sitting at rest, but when ever we came to a stop (horrible holiday traffic) there it was, chuff, … chuff, …. chuff. I hate driving a Uhaul truck so much.

if it’s not the case fans it might be a bad bearing in the cpu cooler fan. especially if it’s running hot. there are free downloadable tools to help diagnose which fan is the culprit. I use open hardware monitor. it will give you all the fan speeds and all the temps.

I have a fondness for the mischievous spirit animal Coyote. Which led me to watch Loki of the Viking gods. The things that they would get into together. Between the beer and the peyote they could have a fun time. So would the Vikings go forward in time or the modern military go back? Hopefully they would band eventually together to defeat their common enemy.

I feel like your Viking project would be a good blog project in a few years after innkeeper. OR you could just write it and I will read it because I think it sounds great already.

Oliver is probably allergic to wool. Very long, expensive story short, I had an old cat that developed the allergy after getting old and once it was finally suggested, I removed everything wool from where the cat could access and an hour later she stopped ripping her fur out.
Couldn’t post this comment on the last blog entry, not sure why.
