Happy Friday! I come bearing gifts as any self-respecting Mod should at the end of the week. And what a week it’s been.
Spiders on Mars, AI Gatorade baptisms, LA getting its own Willy’s Chocolate Experience, apocalyptic horses running through London…the Shift is probably coming, so what better way to welcoming it than with Kate?
Graphic Audio will be releasing the dramatized adaptation of Magic Gifts (Kate Daniels 5.5) on Monday, May 13th. It will be released on the same day on all their retailing partner websites as well (Audible, Hoopla, Chirp etc).
The preorder on the third-part retailers will probably only go live next week, but there is good news there too: starting next month, GA titles will have pre-order data going out to the third-party retailers two months before releases, so we’ll be able to preorder earlier and have peace of mind.

The Magic Gifts novella does not exist in traditional audio format at the moment. House Andrews are trying to make that happen, but in the meantime, Graphic Audio’s adaptation is the way to go for everyone who wants to complete their audio Kate collection.
Compared to a traditional, unabridged, one person-narration, Graphic Audio produce full-cast dramatized adaptations of books, with each character being interpreted by a different actor, adding soundtrack and sound effects, similar to a radio theatre play. Here is a post with instructions on how to create an account with GA and app stream or download the other file formats for any newcomers.

Hate to be a party pooper, but I can’t find it on the Audible website. I just called Audible customer service this afternoon (5/13, Pacific Time) and they said they couldn’t find it and if it’s not on the Audible website, they have no clue …

Thank you Mod R, House Andrews, and GA!! We have escaped zebras running around here in Washington (state). Things are weird lol. Any chance we might get more bloopers? (I know I’m being greedy.). I still want to find a way to save the “such a f*cking weird job” one forever and ever. It applies to so many things.
There were no bloopers for the novella, but lose no hope! Magic Rises begins recording this month, and I’m sure we’ll delight in some 😀
Do you happen to know if they’re planning to adapt Andrea’s novel or any of the other smaller novels featuring other characters? Like Magic Dreams?

I expected a more “scholarly” vibe but I really like this take. It fits him and I love how he’s just “I see unearthly beauty every day at work- you (Aurelia) are simply an unknown specimen.”
Magic Gifts has a special place in my heart as one of the first things I read because of this blog. I kept the PDF on my work computer for years and would reread it when feeling down. I’m so happy to hear it now. I hope the non-GA version happens too, as I’ve found I prefer unabridged. But I’ll buy both, because it’s Magic Gifts.

The best part of my day is when I’m closing down all the electronics (especially on Fridays) and find a post on the blog. This extended, fabulous audio sample from Graphic Audio made me laugh and feel joy. Thank you, Mod R! You are truly awesome.
That said, I am painfully aware that House Andrews sits somewhere in Houston which is all over the news and some of the area has been in serious danger. I might not be the first to ask (in which case I’ll read it below) but can you tell us that HA and their daughters are safe? Thank you.

Those excerpts are awesome! As is every Graphic Audio book I’ve ever listened to. I preordered this the moment you first announced it was up on the GA site and am counting down the days until it’s released!
I’d just finished listening to GA’s adaptation of Magic Slays so it’s awesome that Magic Gifts will soon be available!

As I’m a nitpicker and kind of a completionist, I’m wondering what’s left out of the text that makes the GA version not “unabridged”. Does anyone know? I don’t want to miss anything!
The dramatized adaptations require a script – so that is the first part of the process, turning the book into a script.
Things that are taken care of with sound effects or actor interpretation- “he laughed”, “the sound of his steps walking away” etc- are not needed anymore, because the actor laughs and the soundtrack inserts steps walking away, so the narrator doesn’t say them.
Plot points or important moments and scenes are not left out 🙂

They have not skipped anything from what I’ve seen of Ilona Andrews books but the adaptations of the Eileen Wilks’ Lupi series do have more gaps and are shorter.

All of the Graphic Audio Ilona Andrews stories disappeared from my Hoopla options in April. Is this something based on my library, or for all of Hoopla?

I don’t care much for regular audiobooks but I LOVE the graphic audio ones! No chance to get bored from the same voice going on and on, and they did a great job with the accents so far. So glad you went with them.

I used to listen to the old radio broadcast shows, like the Shodow “The Shadow Knows ” and the Graphic Audio adaptations sound like they would be very similar, and just as wonderful.
Unfortunately I can’t afford them.

Is there a plan to have Gunmetal Magic made in GA?
At the moment, Graphic Audio are focusing on getting all the main series Kate POV stories out, there are still 5 to go – plus the extra content from Small Magics.
It’s up to Graphic Audio whether they complete the KD world after that, these are not author-commissioned adaptations. GA approach House Andrews about purchasing adaptation rights and House A are very happy to sell.
