I’m back, and this time with an exciting & exclusive giveaway! Y’all have probably realized from the title that Ilona Andrews’s has placed me in charge of hosting the giveaway of 5 signedKinsmen Collector edition copies. This is a super awesome event, for obvious reasons. The copies the lucky winners will be receiving are hardcover & have yet to be even unwrapped.

So how do you win? That’s a good question! Here’s how you can qualify for one of these amazing Kinsmen Collector Editions. On this post, leave a comment saying who is your favorite character in the Kinsmen series and why.

This giveaway is open to all readers; 3 copies will be awarded to US residents and 2 copies will go to international readers. Please be sure to tell us what country you are in to be eligible for the international giveaway. Replies to other comments in the thread do not count as entries.

This giveaway will end on Friday, March 8th.

On Friday, I will use a random number generator to select the 5 lucky winners. Like I said, it will be completely random. But to even have a chance of being selected, you have to comment!

I bought the ebook back when I was discovering the Hidden Legacy series all through that lovely summer when we got White Hot and Wildfire within months of each other. I loved seeing all the little forerunners for the Hidden Legacy world and Meli would fit right in with the Houston Houses.

  6. This is easy. Claire from Silver Shark is my favorite. Silver Shark is so far my most re-read Ilona Andrews story. It has something that picks me up when I“m down. Claire manages to win against overwhelming odds; you just can“t not like her.

    • Claire and Meli are both great, but Venturo stole my heart. He was so good to his family and his scruples were intact after being dissed. A hard worker and sooo confident. And as Jack Palance said, “Confidence is sexy.”

  27. I like to watch Claire literally and figuratively bloom from a drab creature in dire circumstances to a vibrant, competent person, who allows herself to grow. Not many would after a lifetime of war.

  28. I’m torn between Venturo and Claire from Silver Shark. Venturo because he kind and has principles, and Claire because she is a survivor and is kind. They definitely deserve each other.

  37. I just reread Silver Shark yesterday because I love it so much and Claire is absolutely my favorite character. She’d led such an awful life and was so beaten down, but when she got a chance she made the best of it. She embraces her new life, is competent and loyal and all around awesome!

  71. I’m embarrassed to say that Kinsmen is the only series I have not read from the lovely Andrews. I own it already, but am just now getting caught up on Hidden Legacy.   120. While I love both heroines, my favorite is Captain Claire Shannon. By whatever name she uses she’s an unforgettable character. Using her wits and determination, she survives a horrible situation, and finds a way to thrive in a totally unfamiliar place & culture. And she remains true to her friends & values. She’s been the most deserving heroine of a happy ending I’ve come across in a long time. (Those others would be Kate & Nevada!)

  122. My favourite character is Claire Shannon. It’s because of this sentence: “Your hair is too bright.” My mum was brought up in Eastern Germany when the Berlin wall was still standing and this is more or less her story, safe for the magic. The houses were grey. They were monitored by their own Courtneys. They were taught these values, that are described in the book perfectly, since childhood and were told that they were winning, until the end. The kindness of telling someone that their hair is standing out too much is something that would have happened there. She struggled a lot after the country reunited. She was never in the Stasi or anything like that.
    She was a geologist. But she lost her job, her skills and values weren’t worth anything and then there was this feeling of being overwhelmed. She once told me a story of trying to buy chocolate. Before, there was one
    kind of chocolate bar you could get. Now she was in a store, standing in front of a whole wall of different pralines and flavours, my sister was starting to cry and she panicked and fled with her child. She had nightmares about this for years. I think it’s like being overwhelmed by a flower planet all of a sudden. Questioning everything you know and are and restructuring your entire inner world like we can see with Claire’s forest takes so much strength and courage. That makes Claire really amazing, just like my mum. You can’t just be “freed” or escape a drab system, you have to work hard and be incredibly brave to be a free person. First of all, your thoughts have to be free and that’s something not many accomplish.
    Also, “waste” is actually a magical word for my grandparents. My grandfather once drank a whole bottle of dish soap, because he thought it was sirup that was going to waste. He got food poisoning. It must have tasted like crap.

  141. When if first read your question, I am embarrassed to admit, I really couldn’t answer your question and realised I think a re–read is definately in order. I know I read them, really liked them and hoped there be more books from this universe, but I really can’t remember much about them right now. I looked at the blurbs and decided Meli is my favourite.
    If I win, that book would go to Germany and a re–read would be imminent.

    With that said, Deirdre is a perfect IA heroine, savvy, pragmatic, underestimated, and decisive. Plus she keeps good notes 😉 This freebie story also lead me to the one-click the entire series. She is a good judge of character and knows who to trust, while keeping herself guarded. She shows adaptability, even when exposed to a totally new environment that is a sensory overload. She is strong and intelligent and quite capable. She is willing to risk her life for those she considers people she owes for the care of her mother. At the same time she doesn’t diminish their efforts or belittle those who aren’t as strong I appreciate her protective instincts and problem solving abilities. She doesn’t compromise her values for personal gain and goes toe to toe with those who threaten others.

Her character development was so rich, and seeing her in the many hats that fate forced her to wear made her one of the best developed characters I’ve ever come across. The fact that the story was so short just enforced the skill it took to write such a well rounded, intriguing character. I especially love the form of her revenge – brutal, effective, and far more poignant than the knife in the dark I was expecting. No matter how many times I read Silver Shark I always go through the same emotional reactions even though I know what happens, and I always cry at the end. If you have not read these three stories you are really missing out on some of Ilona Andrews best writing! Plus the book has beautiful artwork. This is one of my favourite books ever. It is actually hard to pick a favourite as there are so many great characters to choose from. I very much hope there will be more Kinsmen stories in the future.

She was willing to chance throwing this all away in order to save the people who had taken care of her mother when she was unable to. She is loyal & inspires loyalty in others, and she is a lot of fun to read about.

  652. I love Claire. She goes from such a lost figure on the edge. At the beginning, she is fighting against everything and nothing has purpose. She can’t get her supervisor to articulate what they are fighting for, what she is literally killing people for, and why it is important. She lives by hit wits, quick thinking, and her inner core of strength. She now has something to fight for and she will fight for with everything she has. Yet, this traps her and she can’t be who she wants to be. Almost half of what she is on her new world is a lie. Watching her fight to be who she is and struggle within the boundaries she created, while at the same time showing that she is willing to fight for those in her mother’s building on Uly struck something in me. Seeing her win, by getting to be who she really is and love as she wants to love is something I treasure. The hidden nuggets of humor add spice and their tone in spots is so sarcastic I laughed out loud. I just love the wit you gave her. Even the way it ends with note from Lianne was perfect. Thank you for this one.

Meli manages to lay an improbable trap and lure in her bait, but stick to her guns and left him according to plan. She didn’t get all sappy and spill all the secrets, and I think that makes her such a strong character and makes it an strong book. Claire is so smart because she hides in plain view, and assimilates, which we see is something not everyone from her home world can do. Not only does she support her old neighbors when they need her, but she outsmarts Venturo, which again, is why I think these books are so powerful. And I’m in the US 🙂

    I loved her loyalty to her team. Her grief in losing them made you see who she was as a leader . Her resilience. in finding the strength to continue and adapt to the conditions around her in every day that passed made you want to be her in times of adversity.
    I love that she did not forget those who helped her mother and that she willingly paid back the kindness the minute she had a chance to do so.
    I loved the fact that her feelings for Venturo did not make her sappy or less than what she was.

  803. I like Venturo best, because he has not been corrupted by the power hes has (both as a psycher and as the head of a big company). He hired Claire because she really needed help and it was the right thing to do. He never expected anything for that in return besides her doing her job. He is fair, loyal, friendly, charming and has a strong sense of morality. He is a great character and a great fit for Clair and he is not intimidated by her strength but instead appreciates it very much. They are great together and I would love to read another book with them and see more of these two working together.

    I bought my copies only recently and although I loved them all, I especially loved Meli. I know she is a favourite for alot of ppl and I like her for most of the reasons mentioned above. However, I particuarly like the fact that ppl keep calling it vengeance or revenge…. to me it was more than that. It was her getting close to the thing she has always wanted deep dowm. She fell in love with him as a child, love him as a young adult and had her heart broken. Yes she rose and became an extraordinary woman. She always kept the broken heart though. You can really feel her struggle with that. The fact she was strong enough to even overcome that to love the man who tore it all apart …… Definition of amazing and awe inspiring.

    My favourite character is probably Venturo, because he never uses his ability throughout the novel to invade Claire’s privacy, even though he could do it unknowingly with most people – at least with duds as he first thinks she is. To me he illustrates the difference between having honor and having a good reputation.

  869. Claire is my favorite because she’s such a strong person in her own right, but she has to bury that down to survive and become strong in a new way. It ends up changing her life and she flourishes in this new place. While the other people still cling to the old ways of Melko/Bronwyn with their clothes and fear of the new colorful Dahlia, she evolves and adapts to her situation and I admire that.

  873. I would have to say Claire is my favorite. I am a military brat that joined the military when I was just out of high school. I transitioned to the civilian world after 20 years and talk about a culture shock. The major issue for me was the difference in the way we handled our patients (I am a respiratory therapist). I relate to Claire because she went from a regimented and colorless world to a bright and more informal world. Military to civilian is similar. The military says dress this way, wear your hair this way, walk this way, this is how you do this. Civilian is “as long as the patient is taken care of, do it your way”. Well, within laws and accepted medical practices. I guess I relate to Connor Rogan, too!

My favorite character is Claire; she survived terrible hardship and loss but remains unbroken, her compassion and sense of honor are driving factors in her life. She killed many to protect her own, but did not become hardened to death and violence. The scene where she is choked by the psychopath and then calmly asks if she should notify the authorities was awesome.

  947. I’m going to have to go with Meli Galdes in Silent Blade. Maybe its because she is the first female character I read in The Kinsman series but she really resonated with me.
    As a very young girl raised in a strict , male dominated society, her only value was in procuring an advantageous marriage to further her families standing. When her arranged marriage falls through , but is never formally dissolved, she is left in limbo. No other man would marry her because they were afraid of the powerful Carvanna family who’s son, Celino, was her betrothed.
    She is effectively banished. In a world where power resides in those with psychic talents, Meli discovers she is a melder. She is capable of using of energy like a whip. It is a rare deadly talent. Determined to overcome her circumstances, she changes her name and trains to become a lethal assassin. Her success is unparalleled and she becomes wealthy and independent.
    After many years, she is determined to retire but her family has one last job for her, to assassinate Celvino; the man who left her at the altar and ruined her life. How could she resist?
    Needless to say, things don’t go quite as expected. I love this story and have reread it many times.

  948. Captain Claire Shannon from Silver Shark. Silver Shark is my absolute favorite story and I have read it many times. Claire survived a grey bleak world and when she got to the colorful world of Rada she soaked it all in. She blossomed like the province she landed in. But she was willing to sacrifice everything to help the children. I think she still would have done it even if she didn’t owe the building for helping her mother and hiding her. I would love Silver Shark turned into a full length novel or second book showing what happened to her next.

    On a more serious note, while Claire is a very riveting character (she’s ethical, intelligent, loyal, and strong willed), I like Ven. Good secondary characters really allow the primary ones to shine. Despite all the advantages he’s had based on his powers, position as a kinsman, etc. he’s still striving to be the best he can. He’s more human (and humane) than the other Kinsman while also having this sense of life and fun that the others seem to have buried.
    That’s what I think anyway.

Meli’s history and Celino’s ignorance made it seem that the Kinsmen universe and the authorgods had a plan. I love the series and wish they would write many more books.   1195. The dahlias, representing color, are my favorite character. I know they don’t have emotions or intellect. Claire was great. But the differences between the worlds were so clearly delineated by the colors, especially the flowers. It made the story richer.

  1197. My favourite character in the Kinsmen Universe is Claire from ‘Silver Shark’, because she is a survivor with a great inner strength.
    Despite her dreary upbringing, war, separation… – she has managed to preserve an empathic and loyal heart… and she stays true to herself, even when faced again by life threatening situations in her new and hard rebuilt life.

    She can even cook and bake ..man, that’s awesome!
    Imagine an ultra modern woman assasin that can kill with efficiency bordering to godliness?. Then at the drop of the hat..err..blade, she will bake you tongue dropping goodies! She’s my heroine!!!!
