Most of you know that Quincy was a rescue. He was confiscated from the breeder due to abominable conditions and had come to Kid 2 and her bf with serious problems.
Despite training and much love, Quincy has been exhibiting some un-German Shepherd like behaviors.
For example.
That and some other things convinced Kid 2 to have get a canine DNA test. We now bring you the results.
Quincy is 94% German Shepherd. And 6% wolf.
Behold, Quincy’s family tree.
In light of this new development, should you encounter Quincy, we urge you to exercise extreme caution.
Bri says
Haha. Quincey displays the Regalness and fierceness of his ancestor what an adorable dog.
Smmoe1997 says
Amazing what the DNA tests will find, my friend has what we thought was a chug (Chihuahua/Pug), turns out there’s no pug, but she’s like half pitbull?!?! But she is looks like a slightly larger than usual Chihuahua with a barrel chest, an under-bite, and a curly pug like tail. Go figure.
Quincy’s yips are adorable.

What do Quincy and my favourite Ilona Andrews book have in common?

I wish these tests has been available with our old dog. Speculating on his ancestory was a long running source of entertainment in our family.
“He’s got to have some Shepard in him but why is he that yellow? And the tail… What’s with the tail?”
He was a rescue as a puppy from a no-kill shelter and was the best dog… He’s been gone 11 years now and I still miss him.
Jean says
We had a shepherd/collie mix with probably some terrier added in. His mother was, in the words of the woman who owned her, “not a terribly picky girl” when it came to doggy boyfriends….and neither was the maternal grandma dog….
He had a yellow coat with a white chest and legs – when my mother was displeased with him, she called him “dingo dog”. He did rather look like a dingo, but how one could have gotten to Illinois would be a great mystery and adventure.
His vocals were yapping mostly, with a few woofs thrown in for good measure. My dad would occasionally ask him to “bark like a regular dog”. No dice.
Sivi says
Lol when I first read the blog post title on twitter my mine immediately went to the show Quincy … so now I have both doctors and for some reason werewolves on the mind…I think it might have been the jumpers in the family tree that did it ????
Pam Roth says
OK, I’m giggling like a fiend at my desk at work. That funky yip! The derpy look! I wonder if there was an attempt to de-bark him, that left him with that yip? My Pom quacked like a duck due to be de- barked at her first home.
Ilona says
No, he is permitted to bark all he wants. He is just a weirdo. He does woof at strangers quite loudly in a manly dog fashion. 🙂
Mel says
Honestly, it sounds like he’s swallowed a squeaky toy.

I LOVE the yip! Yeah, it can be a fun game of “Who did your grandma get tangled up with???” with some rescues. Derpy dogs are the best.
Luminstate says
As I scrolled down to the DNA results, I thought maybe a husky or something – do they yip? I was not expecting the wolf. Wow!
Moderator R says
Hehe, the dramatisation of how different dog breeds react to a burglar https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMLAsQcHB/
Huskies are definitely vocal in All The Ways ????
Caroline says
My daughter Kelly has a Golden doodle. His name is Gus and he is wonderful. He is twoish. I bought her a pet camera for Christmas and so she sneaks’ a peek at him from work on her phone. The other day the landlady forgot to tell her that repair men were coming to work on the dishwasher. So Gus was sitting in the living room on the couch when these two men walked in.. He jumped and ran to the door and sat waiting to be petted and then escorted them to the kitchen. He was so happy to show them the way!
Moderator R says
Oh no ????. Making the breed proud hehe

Huskies make All The Sounds, but they especially love to sing opera. They’re dramatic, they know it, they embrace it.

Nope. The howl and they woo and they talk and they grumble but I have never heard anything like those yips.

Huskies do yip and they yoodle howl chirp and an assortment of other noises we have only had one that learned to bark due to hanging out with a dachshund

I didn’t know dog DNA tests existed. Ember is part Chihuahua and part mystery. Probably dachshund. Whatever. Something that has bossy traits in it. ????

A friend of mine who is a professor at Cornell started Embark the Dog genotype company, I highly recommended it, now we know that my friend Husky is part husky beagle with a little bit of boxer. Mostly she is a princess who just loves pillows

If I ever manage the circumstances to get a dog, I would love one that is a wolf mix – it would have to be a low percentage.

It’s headcannon now in my imagination. #CantStopMeNow
MarieS says
???? That would be fun.
DK says
What does it mean when a wolf yips?
It’s a “Wolf Alarm”, a warning to pack mates of possible danger. There are the yips, yaps, squeals, and chirps of play. These sounds are also used to show submissiveness to higher ranking pack members.
Wolf Talkhttps://www.everythingwolf.com › wolftal
how great that Quincy got a good home.. looks like he is the younger so he has to show respect…
when the coyotes around here start singing we can almost count the young by the yipping
Jean says
Coyotes here, too. Mobile home park next to a suburban forest preserve. They sometimes yip and call in the summertime near sunset. Maybe social/conversation?
They really holler when they hear fire trucks – they do NOT like the sirens!
Marisa says
Omg I love the yips! Have you seen the “Dog DNA” youtube video by Funny or Die? Hilarious with an unexpected twist.

Cynthia says
Love GSDs! We got ours from the local pound and he was about 2 years old at the time. Lived with us for 16-1/2 years, so 18+ years. A looong life for GSD. Our vet said he was the best GSD in her practice, although with his escapades we surely helped pay for her student loans substantially. He had over 65+ pieces of buckshot in his hindquarters but it never fazed him – hours long daily off-leash field runs, rabbit hunting (to a count of 15) but never sacked a single mole though his trenches were prolific, mountain hiking, lake and river swimming, he lived the grandest life! Now we have a rescue MinPin and he’s as good a guard, a great companion, and an amazing mouser. Animal companions are the greatest (and sometimes more beloved than cranky teenagers, lol). Bark, woof, growl, snarl … now rub my tum and give me (another) treat! Quincy is lucky to be part of your family’s fur-baby coalition!
Lora Tyler says
Love it!! He is so cute!
jewelwing says
Too funny. I met a few wolf hybrids of varying degree back in the day as a vet tech. All the ones I met were very polite.
I have adopted (after fostering her for a month) a pup who was said to be a blue heeler cross. Turns out she’s at most 1/8 heeler. Half GSD, quarter pit, an eighth Siberian husky. You can see how that pit/husky mix could look like a heeler. She’s got zero prey drive and will likely max out at 35-40lb. Go figure. When she does bark, which is almost never, she does sound like a shepherd. In addition she has a full repertoire of silly little noises.
Also, she’s 6-8 weeks older than the litter’s adopters were told by the rescue. This has complicated her socialization process quite a bit, and three of the four siblings including her have anxiety issues. Do not even get me started on the parasite load or the insufficient dose of medication they issued to treat it, necessitating what is now our third round of treatment. The rescuers’ hearts are in the right place, but they have acted like the kind of horse dealers I actively avoid dealing with. Take everything a rescue says with a grain of salt.
jewelwing says
Although I should say that the breed-specific rescues seem to be meticulous in their descriptions of the challenges presented by the individual dogs in their care.
Ed says
His yipping sounded like he swallowed the squeaker in a chew toy. Very interesting. I once Saw a Shepard that was more than 6% wolf. Beautiful creature but even I as a young boy knew look but don’t touch.
Breann says
Thank you for sharing that! I love all the animal updates! ????
Kris says
Wolf dogs are no joke… but with love and training, they are just like any other dog if a bit more hyper. Make sure he gets lots of exercise!
Claire M says
???????????? yipping wolf dog is adorable! Always has been, never gets old. Thanks for sharing!!
Amelie says
I am very skeptical of doggy DNA tests for whatever reason, even though I’ve done the human ones (I did Ancestry and 23andme and there weren’t huge discrepancies for me between the two). I don’t think they’re totally inaccurate but I also take what they say with a bajillion grains of salt. If you were to use more than 1 doggy DNA company I wonder how the results would compare. My guess is there would be significant differences.
Whatever Quincy is, his squeaky bark is hilarious and he is very cute. 🙂
Cynthia Ann Sonnen says
Our Maggie was a rescue that looked like a full black lab but she had golden eyes and treated anything smaller than her 90 lb self as PREY! We tested her and discovered she was 12% wolf. We never shared with anyone but the vet for a variety of reasons. We did need to keep her away from small cats and dogs. She didn’t bother the little kids except to follow them around so she could steal food out of their hands. She was also a big talker- she would make vocalizations to us all day long! Pretty funny!!
Christine says
This is Highly Important information, without which I would not have been able to carry out my day. Thank you.

Thank you for the chuckles. I have been watching a episode of Midsomer Murders, so that means there has been a lot of deaths in a small village ????

Wow! One of Quincy’s parents has got balls. Excuse the pun. ????
Going back to the wild side, I see!
Was Kid 2 thrilled?
Katherine says
ROFL! Love it so much.
Next up a kitty DNA test for Camille. Wisdom Panel does a good one. I bet Camille is at least 50% Lykoi.
Mary says
Wow, I honestly thought that cross breed thing never happened. Huh, okay, well, he seems like a nice creature anyhow, and looks happy, so I guess Life is Good.
jewelwing says
People crossbreed wolves and dogs on purpose. It’s a bad idea in general, because not all wolf behaviors belong in human company. That’s why there are laws about it in some places, but individuals that are appropriately trained and supervised can be good canine citizens.
jewelwing says
And 6% is really not very much wolf. You never know which genes are going to come out on top though.
Tanya says
Dogs are… The. BEST! And Quincy is obviously the bestest boy. Hugs to Kid2 for giving him a the good life!

I had a great weekend, bought my next home in less than 3 hours. It must have been meant because everything meshed. Now to begin the packing process again. Moving the last week in April. Job hunting again, big groan.
Crowbones comes out next week! My reward for a weekend of boxes and tape!
Donna A says
I’m looking forward to that myself, especially since Soul Taken got pushed back. You can always read while you sort boxes – it could make for “interesting” unpacking ????
(I once tried reading while sorting haberdashery. My results were. . . peculiar)
Mar says
Sometimes the genes from ancestors kick in down the line. Even with 6% wolf, that wolf is strong in this one????
Sara B. says
Funnews about Quincy, always enjoy hearing about him … although I am the biggest fan of Artha and Sookie … and Tuna.
The best thing about today — I ended up on the main page and was able to read the posted excerpt from Ruby Fever — so so awesome. Always exciting to read something new in the snippets, deleted scenes and excerpts. Poor scared spider.
I hope that the new family compound scene made it into the final cut (although I can see how it might have been trimmed to the essential action) — if so, it would make a great short story or novella?
I have just been informed by cats that it is past dinner time – got to go.

Bwah ha ha. Thank you, Ilona Andrews for the post.
Agreed about using caution around Quincy. But German Shepherd’s as a breed typically have more wolf in them than say chihuahua. Can make life interesting.
Then there is Titan whom my sister rescued and decided I need a rescued dog when she couldn’t handle him. She said he was a Labrador Great Dane mix. Embark dna testing said rhodesian ridgeback Labrador mix aka Rhodesian Labrador. He can be freakingly scary at times. No we still don’t have Good k9 paperwork because Come is not done unless he decides I need protection. Sigh he has failed testing 3 years now. He has a lab bark (“SQUIRREL!. Bird!, DEER!) and a Rhodesian ridgeback bark (your ass is grass and I am the lawnmower roar.)
Good luck with Quincy. He definitely sounds like a juvenile wolf to me on the video clip. One of my sisters rescues and trains German shepherds so I have heard shepherd puppies vocalize as well as adults. The thing to remember is that training and love matters no matter what the dna testing shows.
Nancy says
I still remember Quincy and his buddy hiding out on the sofa to get away from the poop-spewing Roomba. His yip is funny.
AP says
Yes indeed, a very important announcement!
Is Quincy singing the sad song of his people? ????
AndrewC says
ROTFLMAO!
Thank you. I needed that. Those pictures are the best.
Stacey says
We just got a new mutt. Where i am is pit mix land. I grew up with the breed and have trained my dogs as an adult too. Our new dog, Suki, (ATLA reference) has pit in her, but I think also Shepard (back leg and fur texture) and Akita (triangle head, fox brown, white beard). I was floored when on the first day she turned down treats!
