Happy Friday! The store is open today for last minute shopping. Here is a post from Mod R who is now off on vacation. – Ilona
UPDATE: So apparently it’s Thursday.
This Covid thing is terrible and needs to end. BDH gets an extra day to shop because I don’t know what day today is. – Ilona
Several of my shows have been cancelled recently and I find myself unable to get into anything new. I’ve got the dreaded tv morbs.
I don’t know whether it’s the result of the screenwriter strike, showrunners starting to rely on AI, or just the new trends and tropes not speaking to me, but it seems like every Tv show needs to be watched for 1 or 2 seasons before you can get into it and “see the potential”. I want one that’s already potenched! Is that too much to ask?
I usually watch shows with an element of supernatural or fantasy in them – and I’m counting young people affording beautiful houses in there with the fantasy lol. Nothing that takes itself too seriously, or focuses too much on diseases and death and woe. That’s not good for my nervous system (joke’s on me, all my systems are nervous).
Some recent-ish favorites, before everything started to lose flavour:
- Extraordinary. British series, in a very irreverent Hidden-Legacy-type world – everyone develops powers when they turn 18, except for our intrepid protagonist, who is a dud. And a huge mess. (Show hasn’t been renewed)
- Only Murders in the Building. Just campy whodunnit hijinkery with two huge comedy stars. Selena Gomez is also there.
- Evil. It’s like the X files, if the X Files leaned into being unhinged from the very beginning and instead of Mulder, it had awesome, take-no-shit nuns. With shovels. (Show ended.)
- Shining Vale. The complete koo-ko bananapants representation of the writing and editing process was a hoot for me. Honestly, moving into a spooky house and taking on a demonic ghost as a creative muse is the most believable part of this show. I loved it. (It got cancelled.)
Please let me know what you are watching these days, whether it’s completely gripping, helps you relax or just keeps you company in the background!
I need a new show and I need it bad.

I just finished Will Trent on Hulu. The protagonist genius with all his problems is very entertaining.

I also loved Will Trent. Any that’s a high compliment coming from someone who’s read all the Will Trent books. The show really captured the heart of the stories.

Also suggest:
Reservation Dogs
What We Do In The Shadows
Beef
The Boys
And weirdly I enjoyed The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. I put it on for my cat, but got sucked in.

Having been on Chinese series kick, Will Trent is probably the only US series that we’re still watching.

Resident Alien.
Alan Tudek is an alien pretending to be a human in a small Colorado town. He may or may not want to destroy the world.
Oracle22 says

Resident Alien is hilarious!
I was going to post that!
Elena Linville-Abdo says
+1000 to that one.
Hubby and I love it. It’s funny, irreverent, and Alan Tudek is hillarious.
Tink says
I watched a few episodes of it and recommended it to my brother, but I haven’t gotten back to it recently. I was only a few episodes into the first season and liked it. I think it’s in season 2 or 3.
Joey says
Yes!! Adding on to vote for Resident Alien. This show so much more layered then the premise suggests with real heart, and extreme weirdness. I love it.
MariaZ says
This series is SO GOOD.
Audrea E says
Haven’t heard of it, but Alan Tudek is always got to check that out for me.
MariaZ says
Tudek is SO GOOD in this part that you do want him to succeed in his mission.
mz says
Very few shows make me laugh out loud. And my sister too. This is one of them and I very highly recommend it too
Christi says
I was going to suggest this one too! That show is hilarious!

Hi Four Light,
Where would I find Resident Alien? My DH & I are real “prehistorics” when it comes to streaming, etc. (I don’t have a cell phone–just a landline & desktop pc.) Our cable company recently switched everyone to the internet–it’s very frustrating. If we hit the wrong button on our remote it can days to get it straightened out! :o)

About Resident Alien. It originally showed on Syfi channel, but is on Netflix for awhile now.

My usual go-to is Schitt’s Creek. It’s always up beat and the characters are hot messes that still have a heart.
Cass Boon says
Yes, it’s almost perfect.
Tiapet says
Schitts Creek helped me get through the pandemic. It gets funnier and better in all ways right to the end.
Krystine says
+1 irreverent and enjoyable

Dead Boys Detective Agency (Netflix) // magical afterlife, witches, magical and dubiously sexy cat-person royalty, heaven and hell and monsters and lore. Compelling main trio.
Ghosts (Amazon Prime/Paramount Plus) // the fluffiest most fun show ever, can’t wait for another season – a young couple inherit a creepy old mansion and want to turn it into a BnB which is not something the many resident ghosts are particularly excited about. Mostly heart warming and fluffy with just enough occasional strife to make each and every happy resolution that much more enjoyable.
Lisa says
It was fun to compare and contrast the US version of Ghosts with the UK original series, especially since many of the show runners are the same. I know Paramount offers season one of the UK version, but I haven’t checked for more lately because all except the last season (🤬) had been on Max.
I can relate to struggling to find something light but captivating to watch these days. Really makes me appreciate posts like these.
I hope you and Gordon are feeling better.
Merano says
I got hooked on the UK version, with them filling in with it on CBS during the writers strike. Discovered that to see it all, uncut, I had to purchase it from the Empire of Evil (Amazon). But it was worth it. The US version is fun and cute, but the UK version is much funnier.
Lucy says
I too love love the UK version.
Sabrina says
+1 on Dead Boy Detectives
ginny says
I also liked the Dead Boys detective agency!
Iftcan says
If you like archeology, YouTube is showing all episodes (except the few that were shown “live”) of Time Team. It was a BBC production. A team of British archeologists has 3 days to do a dig, sometimes in very strange places. They mostly do only British based digs, but did the rare dig in non-British locations. Spain, the U.S., an island in the Caribbean. These are real archeologists doing real digs. There were 20 or 21 seasons, so will keep you watching if you enjoy archeology.
a terrestrial being says
YES!!! I am actually rewatching the series (and a Patreon supporter for them). Love, love, love it!
Older TV series I love also (but wrong genre) Spacecenter Babylon 5, it has IMHO a fantastic development for a lot of its characters (G‘Kar comes to mind, what a change!), and Farscape, some need some episodes to get used too ‚real‘ aliens (not human looking…) and so on, but what an atypical TV-series 😉
a terrestrial being says
Forgot to mention Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as it was my first try for a fantasy TV series and has a female kick-ass lead, only a bit young for my usual taste, but still interesting then. I thing the series and the connected Angel series both run on Disney+
Kosh says
Babylon 5 is one of my favorite shows, but it might be too heavy for what Ilona is looking for.
Beth says
Babylon 5 is awesome!
Rachel says
I love Farscape. Scorpion was one of those baddies I loved but hated but loved and was such a complicated character (though I didn’t like the head medicine thing, that was going into horror territory that bit and I had to look away every time that happened). I loved that not all the aliens looked humanoid, because if there’s life out there what’s to say they’ll look like us. Also love love love pilot and moya, the true stars of the show.
Andreea says
yessss
Beth says
Oh, I love Farscape, it was so well done!
Sue Curley says
We love time team, comfort tv..a gardeners world time team collab seems like a natural fit.. since it Seems like if you stick a shovel in the ground in the uk you will find something cool..
Rachel says
there is a show like that Sue, though not with time team, its called
The Great British Dig: History in your garden. basically a group of archaeologists knock on peoples door and ask if they can dig in people’s back or sometimes front gardens. The presenter is Hugh Dennis.
Rachel says
Time Team seemed to inspire alot of archaeology shows with there format. with the one I said above and Digging for Britain (which sometimes has some familiar faces), wouldn’t come to be without time team. There’s also digging for treasure though that’s focus more on detectorists findings it does have archaeologists talk about what they find. My dad’s a big fan of archaeology programmes and time team was the show we watched together when I was a kid, that and horizon or sky at night (physics or archaeology was my dad’s go to for TV).
Sue says
Thanks Rachel..I will look for it
Shivaun says
This is one of the great shows and I wish they would do a reboot
Michelle M says
I recommend the Dead Boy Detectives on Netflix it’s supernatural and funny. I am watching it now (reached episode 3) and having lots of fun. It only has one season so far and I hope that it gets additional seasons and does not get only one like Lockwood & Co that was cancelled after one season (another supernatural series on Netflix that I enjoyed)
Sarah B says
iZombie – charming zombies
What We Do in the Shadows (TV show) – hilarious vampires
A Discovery of Witches – serious show about witches, vampires, and daemons, but super high production quality and very well done, which 3 complete seasons based on the book trilogy
MariaZ says
Absolutely recommend iZombie, love the recipes she does at that beginning of the each episode.
KatieV says
+1000 for What We Do in the Shadows the show. So, so funny. The movie was funny too, but the show is fantastic. I just saw that the FX store has a WWDITS edition of the game Clue. It’s $50 but SO tempting. Imagine – It was Colin Robinson in the Fancy Room with a phone book.
iZombie was super fun too – I loved it when she made poutine out of the Canadian hockey player’s brain.
Jenna says
+1 iZombie, +1 Discovery of Witches
Rachel says
+ iZombie + What we do in the Shadows
Malle says
I second RESIDENT ALIEN and am a fan of all the Ilona choices, especially EVIL. Back in the day I really enjoyed FARSCAPE — swaggering hero, puppets in space, enemies to lovers.
On Prime(all my streamers are Canadian; US can be different):
FALLOUT – kitsch, the apocalypse and great lead. Plus Walter Scoggins
MY LADY JANE – fun vibes in this alternate history
On Apple:
SUNY – still loading new episodes so now sure how it ends, but Rashedo Jones + robots
TIME BANDITS – still loading new episodes but fun so far
SLOW HORSES – not like anything on your list but great series (several) and Gary Oldman
On Disney:
WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS = like the movie and better
THE BEAR – believe the hype
RESERVATION DOGS – took me a few episodes but so good! New generation of stars
SHARDLAKE – Tudor mystery from books. Hoping for more
SHOGUN – it’s so well done
On Netflix:
LUCIFER – fun fun fun
MONKEY KING (NEW ADVENTURES)
DRAGON PRINCE
DEAD BOY DETECTIVES
DEAD TO ME – season 1
RUSSIAN DOLL
Also bc of Murders in the Building: POKER FACE (like Columbo; she has gift of knowing when someone lies; so keen for season 2) and DIARRA FROM DETROIT (have not seen bc Cdn rights issues but got good reviews and female lead)
Victorria Wytcherley says
I need to resume Poker Face. I got pulled off for some reason and haven’t returned.
Tink says
I liked Poker Face. Waiting for season 2.
I’m disappointed Halo was canceled. Hopefully another service will pick it up.
Cindy M says
I am so disappointed I had no idea that Halo was canceled. However I’m not surprised. All the good shows always get canceled it seems. At least all the good shows to me anyway.
Patricia Schlorke says
If you read Shogun, and then saw the series on FX/Hulu/Disney, you might be disappointed with the series. Still can’t watch the part when Blackthorn and company land in Anjiro and face Yabu and his men. If you read the book and/or watch the series, you will understand why.
Otherwise, the series was a great adaptation of the book.
Kells says
that series was excellent
Patricia Schlorke says
The actor who played Yabu was great.
Darlene says
I second Lucifer, it keeps getting better each season. So sad they ended. But definitely binge worthy!

I really liked My Lady Jane!
It was really hilarious, the narrator cracked me up

+10000 Shogun, soooooooo good. +10000 Lucifer, Tom Ellis is clearly having the time of his life
KatieV says
Reservation Dogs – yes! Fantastic show. Funny and weird and beautiful.
Again +1000 for What We Do in the Shadows
Amanda says
Totally agree on Poker Face. I started it because Natasha Lyonne is amazing but the show overall is just fun and time flies by. She’s great in Russian Doll too.
I had Covid a couple weeks ago. This strain is really going around and knocked me completely down but I finally felt more like myself after a week, so hope you’re on the road to recovery!
Alyssa says
+1 My Lady Jane and Lucifer!!
Yana says
The Bear! Yes! Vary good, vary funny, vary entertaining and people in the business I know confirme it is a good represantation. A bit emotional and dramatic at moments though. Warrior is good, it’s not fantasy, but it was entertaining and with really good cast, like old Kung -fu films with Bruse Lee. Also If you skipped somehow One piece and Avatar The Last Airbender, really nice.
Tink says
I liked Lupin on Netflix (it’s French but dubbed in English or you can turn on subtitles) and Supacell, also on Netflix.
I also watched a few episodes of The Boys on Prime. I think there’s a spinoff that one of my brothers liked. I’m really far behind on my TV viewing.
mz says
Yes for Lupin.
Rachel says
yes to The Boys and the spin off The Boys:Gen V.
Also in the superpowered but probably shouldn’t have said superpowers and the chaos that follows I recommend an old but not that old british show called Misfits about five young offenders doing community service who obtain supernatural powers while on said community service and hijinks soon follow.
nickole195 says
i am watching Dexter on Netflix (first time viewing). so out of it for tv lately b/c i just don’t watch – however absolutely love Schitt’s Creek and re-watch that loads of times. am going through Charmed again (cheesy) but a nod to the recently departed. will likely re-watch supernatural again too – these are my comfort views. years ago there was show called Pretender – if you can get your hands on that it was amazing. good luck finding something new and exciting. our library has a great selection of movies/dvd’s i often just go and borrow random 80/90s shows – fun to see how far cinema has come – oh and for a laugh rewatch Total Recall 🙂
Sivi says
I finished a great show called Lessons in Chemistry with Bree Larson. really well acted, lovely story line. it may only be a one and done though.
Victorria Wytcherley says

Virginia says
+1 for Lessons in Chemistry

Expanse. Scifi. Complex characters. It grabbed me from episode 1, and we binged it, staying up WAY TOO late.
The Ark. Only 1 season, but it’s hysterical.
The Witcher, Season 1. The rest aren’t nearly as well crafted.
MariaZ says
Really, I thought Witcher season 1 sucked, the storyline got way better after that.
Cecilia says
New episodes of The Ark dropping now. Fun show.

Spoilery about Babylon 5 story arc
Oh god yes, Babylon 5. Babylon 5 is an example of what you can achieve if you really work it. Strachinsky built of credit in Hollywood for years until he could get this show approved, with a very modest budget. He made it work, because apparently unlike everyone else in the industry, he kept his plans and schedules and always had everything ready on schedule, no emergency overtime.
But seriously, B5 changed television, the story is epic and ageless but also truly entertaining in every episode. This is the first show to ask the question, what happens after you win against cosmic evil. Cleanup is a bitch, as is telling the gods to leave because you want to control your own destiny, but then they aren’t around to help.
Fantastic character development, amazing opportunities for epic scenery chewing. Michael York and the search for the Grail.
And when you have watched every B5 thing that has been produced, go and watch Battlestar Galactica, who took what B5 did and ran with it.
Expanse is certainly lovely. Also, they take a different turn halfway through the series, so it isn’t book identical.
Lex, Farscape, Star Gate and Star Gate Atlantis
Rhonda Burrell says
I live What we do in the Shadows. Silly fun with vampires. it also has a hilarious mivie of yhe same name
Rita M. says
The Rookie because Nathan Fillion
Eleanor W says
Yes! And rewatching Firefly (on DVD though) because Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk
For ongoing tv – Discovery’s Expedition Unknown. It’s companionable comfort watching for me and I find Josh Gates’ boundless enthusiasm so funny
I started watching Time Team when visiting England years ago. Need to look that up again.
Jenn says
The Gift! It’s amazing ..on Netflix. The mythology and otherworldly -ness is way cool.
Fallout — I think on Amazon prime – based on the video game-ish. I could only get through 3/4 of episode 1 bc I’m just too sensitive to that level of horror post apocalypse nuclear war but others may feel ok w it.
There’s another Turkish mystical one too I loved… has an HEA that is very good. Starts with an SH and has snakes
Catlover says
Signora Volpe, Inspector Allyce Mysteries currently.
Vicki says
Yes! I have just started watching Signora Volpe season 2, Brilliant British Show. It’s hard finding a series that I want to keep watching after the first episode. For me there’s always got to have a bit of humour to break up the dark bits otherwise it gets too depressing
Also Troppo was an interesting one 2 Seasons done.
An says
Love The Expanse on Prime Video and Foundation on Apple TV+. Both sci-fi with amazing worldbuilding. Both based on books. The Expanse is a complete show that spans multiple seasons. It’s a difficult feat for a 6 season show to have that much care put into all the storylines and overarching plot, and do it well. I also re-watched Foundation recently and it’s so rich in lore. Major bonus for me is that it has so much color which I find a lot of sci-fi shows these days lack. And Lee Pace!
Jenna says
+1 for Foundation, did not feel like they dumbed down Asimov’s original text at all
Maura says
The Expanse was sooo good. It’s probably my favorite show that I’ve watched in the last 5 years or so.
Finula says
Expanse is the best example I have ever seen of a Holy Fool.
If you want a long long run of simply entertaining, watch Star Gate and Star Gate Atlantis.
Farscape is even better than Babylon five for the depth of its alien development.
Lex Is wonderfully wacky outerspace featuring a world eating ship whose control can only be passed on during orgasm.
Victorria Wytcherley says
My go-to’s are Schitt’s Creek and Ted Lasso. If you haven’t seen these two, they are extraordinary—beautiful characters, plot, and writing.
KatieV says
Oddly, Schitt’s Creek is a comfort view for me even though I binged it for the first time while Mom was dying. It was middle of the 2020 Covid wave and only Dad could visit her in the hospital until she declined further care. I’m surprised I don’t hate it due to association, but it’s like a warm blanket. Innkeeper was right there with me too.
SUSAN says
you might enjoy Ricky Gervaises “After Life”. it’s so touching. I was sad when it ended.
KatieV says
I need to watch that one. Thanks for the rec
Carmen says
Ted Lasso is a surprisingly very good show that put forward being kind to people. I was really inspired by that series
MJ says
+1 Ted Lasso. Finally watched it and almost binged. Wonderful program and actors, character development with characters of such integrity and 3 season arc. Wasn’t expecting to miss that world so.
Strike says
++++ 1111 for Lasso.
1 Kind
1 RIDICULOUSLY Positive
1 FUNNY
1 Heartwarming
Lots of unfamiliar faces but so much talent.
The Bear was also mentioned here… which stars Jeremy (Alan white green.??? ) I forget his whole name… I sure its awesome but I don’t have Hulu …
So my recommendation is to back up … to his previous work …
Shameless!! US version … so much ridiculousness.
I keep meaning to watch the original British Shameless which has an early James McAvoy. I can’t imagine it being much different… just English and is probably as good or better depending on if you prefer English/vs or/American.
Anne says
Ted Lasso is just so heartwarming and funny, love it as well!
boogenhagen says
I just got MHZ and I love Arctic Circle, Beck, and Spiral – they are all police procedural crime dramas.
Gail says
Avatar: The Last Airbender (NOT THE LIVE ACTION HORRORS) and Legend of Korra are delights
The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. is Bruce Campbell at his snarkiest in a steampunky/SF western
The Owl House has loads of magical highjinks along with the drama
Moongirl and Devil Dinosaur, really the title says it all
If you like Only Murders in the Building I’d highly recommend tracking down the Nero Wolfe Mysteries with Timothy Hutton and Maury Chaykin
Abbot Elementary is one of the best shows I’ve seen in recent years, it’s a really shining example of humor with heart
Not Dead Yet is a fun sitcom about an obituary writer who can see the ghosts of the people she’s assigned to write about
Laurence says
Yes! Was going to recommend “Not Dead yet”. I loved both seasons, it’s really funscapade!
Angela says
OMG yes, Nero Wolf with Timothy Hutton so Good!!!
Worth digging for until the next season of OMinB is out.
good suggestion IMO, but may be hard to find unless you get the DVDs.
Gail says
Yeah, I’m not aware of this Nero Wolfe series streaming anywhere at the moment but I own the complete series on DVD and regret nothing. I usually re-watch the episode with the murder at the Christmas party during the holidays.
nedibes says
I’m rewatching Avatar right now with my eight-year-old–it’s great. He wanted to try the live action, but I suggested watching this first; after the second season, we watched the pilot of the live action…and then he wanted to go right back to the animated version. We’re only watching a couple of episodes a week, trying to keep it old school :).
Smeech says
Leverage tv show. It follows a team of fictional high-tech Robin Hoods who scam greedy corporations and corrupt forces that have victimised average citizens. A sly former insurance sleuth captains the crack crew, which includes an eccentric expert thief; a computer virtuoso; a hardfisted “retrieval specialist”; and a grifter with ace thespian skills. 5 completed seasons with an amazing happy ending.
Leverage is free to watch on Freevee or Hoopla.
There is also a spin off with some of the original characters called Leverage Redemption. It was ok, not as great as the original Leverage.
Brooklyn Nine Nine is a very funny show. It follows a group of detectives in a Brooklyn, New York police precinct. Romances develop, cases get solved, and all kinds of funny things happen. For example, every Halloween they have a competition and whoever wins gets to be called the greatest detective.
Audrea E says
Are they making new episodes of leverage or is it an older show?
MariaZ says
The original Leverage was an older show. Then they did Leverage Redemption which is newer about 2 years old but then they had the writer’s strike.
Diana says
Leverage Redemption has been renewed for a 3rd season by Prime. Freevee had cancelled it after 2 seasons.
If you like Christian Kane, he has a series (Prime I think) called almost Paradise. 2 seasons. Ex agent retired to a tourist island. Lots of fun
Kells says
the original series was great
Deborah says
+1 for Leverage, both the original and the follow-up series
laura says
i LOVE leverage, and was happy to have it come back again as leverage redemption!
Emily says
yes leverage!!!!!!!! leverage and leverage redemption!! I rewatch all seasons every year…I even cycle through the commentary on every episode of leverage. absolutely love it.
almost paradise is great too!
Jenna says
+10000000 for Leverage AND Leverage Redemption, plus LR has a third season coming
Fran says
+1 for Leverage! Jennifer Crusie used to write about the show on her blog and she called it “competence porn” – great description. The tech is a bit dated now, but the characters are so well-done and the cons they pull off are fascinating. Terrific cast and guest stars. If you want a little teaser, there’s a great fan-made tribute video on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSP1ZGVQQMA&list=PLNUN7CKfg3HoxDLXR-huT3-YRbTtvECQ2&index=1.
IMO Leverage Redemption was meh. The writing is not nearly as good, and there’s a great big Timothy-Hutton-shaped hole in the cast. 🙁

Interview with the Vampire, the casting and chemistry with the actors is amazing and the adaptation is top notch!
I second The Expanse which is fantastic although it has a slow start but it’s brilliant.
If you haven’t checked out Being Human the BBC version, highly rec that!
Also Orphan Black Tatiana Maslany is amazing in this especially with all the different roles she plays. I’m going to do a rewatch.
Emily says
oooh orphan black was so good! rewatching now too!
Jenna says
+1 for IWaV, although it is not an easy watch, and +10000 for the glory that is Tatiana Maslany in OB
Rachel says
+ Being human the BBC version +Orphan Black
patricia says
There is Orphan Black Echos now – about 3D printing human and a tech leader whose FoundatIon funds innovative science but who does not seem all that altruistic.
Liz says
I also recommend Orphan Black. Amazing acting and a great storyline.
I wanted to add Sense8 to the list. A mystery, some supernatural stuff and very sexy.
Alison says
Ghosts! The UK version…..
DonnaG says
UK TV, Death in Paradise, Midsummer Murders, Poirot , Professor T all easy to watch and funny in places. All easy to watch
Fun films Red and Red 2, Hitman’s bodyguard and Carry on Films. The Carry on films made in the 70’s in the UK and a bit dated but so funny, well to us in the UK of a certain age.
Hope you all feel better soon.
laura says
RED and RED 2 are hilarious movies! i love them! i don’t normally rewatch movies or tv shows, but i’ve seen those two movies multiple times and the humor holds up.
Eleanor W says
+1 Dame Helen Mirren with a machine gun – priceless!
Deborah says
+1 for MidSummer Murders
Heather says
+2 for Midsomer Murders and Elementary. I love cozy murder mysteries. I just finished Beyond Paradise (Death in Paradise spin-off)
I love the witty 1920s female detectives in Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries and the Mrs. Bradley Mysteries.
Kari says
Miss Fisher was great just for the fabulous clothes she wore! The costume budget must have been enormous. Pretty light mysteries. I can’t take anything close to horror, and sex crimes are really off the table. This was fun.
Heather says
+1 Death in Paradise
Yana says
I loved also Vera, and Shetland and Endeavour for detective mysteries.
Emmalee says
I got a cheaper version of max during holiday promotions. I’ve been watching The Great Pottery Throwdown and it’s great for relaxing. Think Great British Bake Off (or the The Great British Baking Show, as shown in the US) but with clay.
I also finally got to watch True Detective and loved it. (I watch a lot of true crime shows.) I haven’t started House of the Dragon.
Patricia Schlorke says
I finished watching House of the Dragon this past Sunday. This season is a doozy. I’m not going to say much more since I don’t want to give anything way. 🙂
By the way, I heard that House of the Dragon has been renewed for Season 3. They will only do four seasons before ending it. Boo!
Tanya says
I’m taking a pottery class because of throwdown 😂

“Ghosts” (the US series) is very lighthearted, at times touching, and hilarious. The original UK version is a little more graphic so I skipped that one.
Non-fantasy:
“Reacher”. Competency porn. That is all.
Some light-hearted, comforting shows I have been really enjoying the korean series “Youn’s Stay,” “Youn’s Kitchen,” and now “Jinny’s Stay” and “Jinny’s Kitchen”. It takes 5 really famous Korean folk (think Parasite and Minari, BTS) and plonks them in a quaint little town in different parts of the world where they open a temporary bistro to introduce korean food to the locals. They went to Southeast Asia, Spain, Mexico, and now Iceland. During COVID they served royal recipes in an ancient korean house to foreigners living in Korea. I love korean food and it’s just been so interesting watching people from around the world react.
Jenna says
+1 for Reacher and that description
Katelyn C says
+1 for Reacher and that description too!!
Heather says
+1 Reacher
So. Much. Competency porn! 😄
Yana says
The Night Menager, it was brilliant!
Surfergirl says
If you can find it, try Wellington Paranormal. It’s a ‘sort-of’ spinoff from the ‘What We Do In The Shadows’ movie (which is hilarious ) – it is about a couple of inept cops trying to cope with supernatural doings in Wellington NZ. Absolutely hilarious!
KatieV says
What?? I need to find that!
Tanya says
Ghosts (UK and/or US)
Discovery of Witches
I enjoy almost all British mysteries. You can’t go wrong any adaptation of Agatha Christie.
I watch a lot of Korean and Chinese dramas. Love Between Fairy and Devil was a delight. It’s pure fantasy and the actors are great in it. I also loved Love like the Galaxy. It’s a historical costume drama with no fantasy.
Siobhan says
I was told Fallout is fabulous, but I haven’t had a chance to watch it yet.
Christi says
We watched it and loved it! The actors did a really great job, and it stayed true to the games. My partner is someone who played the first 4 games and enjoyed them, and he said there were a lot of little things that they added that were from the game, which was pretty cool. It actually got him back into the playing games lol.
Fran says
Fallout is really good, and you don’t have to be familiar with the games to enjoy it. Walton Goggins is excellent as always.
Colleen says
An oldie but goodie Battlestar Galactica
Tink says
Oldie oldie or newer oldie? 😉
I still have the original version on DVD. Took me a long while to psych myself up to watch the reboot, but it was really good. Glad I waited until the series ended, though, so I could watch it through from beginning to end.

One Piece! 8-episode series based on the anime, has been renewed, it is a pirate-young-adult-coming-of-age story where the journey is important, so you won’t be stuck wanting the story arc to complete.
Jen says
+1 They did really well with the live action.
And if you get the itch for what’s next, there’s a huge amount of anime episodes.
Patricia Schlorke says
By the way, it is Thursday here in the US, not Friday. I realize in other parts of the world, Friday has arrived (lucky people!).
Shogun, House of the Dragon, eventually Dune – Prophesy on HBO/Max, and lots of cooking shows.
I am usually asleep by the time a lot of TV series are on since I get up very early in the morning during the week for work.
Henry says
Still Thursday for 8 more hours here.
I have read all the Discovery of Witches books and enjoyed them. The TV version – not so much.
Cookie says
Yes exactly 👍 the books are amazing! But sorry the show is cow dung.
SoCoMom says
I recently broke down and subscribed to BritBox. love McDonald & Dobbs and am now working my way rheoufh 13 seasons of Vera. Crime drama with humor and realism sprinkled about. very much needed as I sort through estate stuff.
Nancee says
Love Vera and The Chelsea Detective, but I have to use closed captions with both because of the accents. (I’m old and don’t hear as well as I used to.)
Famke says
+1 Love these.
If you like Vera you might also appreciate Shetland
Lynn says
Shetland is brilliant- currently re watching all of them
Denise says
Love my Brit Box…..try Morse and then Lewis. Both are excellent!
Judith Brosnan says
I’m totally obsessed with Chinese historical dramas. I’m a full time carer for my husband. Once he’s gone to bed I settle down with YouTube & a coffee & start with a drama. They are of various lengths. I do hate it when they go to 60 or over episodes though😤. I’m fascinated by the sword play , the flying through the air & in some the magic. Also the embroidery on the costumes is just fabulous. Oh & one of them was all about the food in the Emperors palace & set in the kitchens. The detail was amazing.
Sandhya Rao says
These aren’t new but aren’t really old either. hope they help
1. Bosch on Prime is my favorite (not fantasy)
2. Supernatural is also one of my favs
3. I truly enjoyed Grimm, dunno where it is available
Deborah says
Grim was great! Really sorry when it ended.
Ann says
On the mystery side I highly recommend Brokenwood. A New Zealand show. Wonderful ensemble cast and recurring characters. Cozy.
I love Death in Paradise.
On the sci-fi front Foundation is wonderful.
Jazzlet says
Brokenwood is great!
Holly says
I’m obsessed with the Kdrama “Marry My Husband”. It has a little supernatural bend to it, but it’s mostly a tale of revenge and finding a love worthy of you.
LaurenO says
That one was so good. I think Park Min-Young is excellent in any role she is given.
I also love Beauty Inside on Netflix. It is also about finding someone who accepts you for who you are, but in this case she is an actress who for one week a month suddenly looks like someone else, and it can be of any age, race, or gender. So one week she was a 10 year old boy, and one week she was a 50 year old woman. She always goes back to being her normal self for the rest of the month.
Natasha Johnson says
If you have Apple TV I suggest Ted Lasso or Slow Horses. They are not fantasy but they are very good!
MariaZ says
The Magicians on Netflix – wacky, weird – season 1 is a bit slow especially with Quintin wallowing in his on self pity but it is good. 5 seasons.
Wizards: Tales of Arcadia – animated series on Netflix – 3 underlying story arcs (kids & Adults)
Animated series
Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia (2016–2018) 3 seasons
3Below: Tales of Arcadia (2018–2019) 2 seasons
Wizards: Tales of Arcadia (2020) 1 season
Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans (2021) film that ties in and ends it
Avatar the Last Airbender & later The Legend of Korra. On Netflix
Ami says
We LOVED all the Trollhunter shows! Fun, action packed, and full of heart!
Anna L says
I love Wynonna Earp, canadian supernatural western. I describe it as canadian Buffy but with better writing and less murder your gays. Its campy, and has a great cast. Its on netflix and will have a 90 minute special coming to Tubi in fall.
If you love musicals, check out Galavant, its like if Spamalot became a tv show.
I also love Corner Gas a canadian tv show about small town, its available on amazon prime.
If you like cooking competitions, Top Chef is great or also BBQ showdown on netflix
Nickole195 says
Corner Gas is hilarious….did not hold up well for the reboot but would recommend
KatieV says
Yes!! Wynona Earp was great
JoAnne K says
Extraordinary hasn’t been officially cancelled so there is hope for the future and Only Murders season 4 starts on Aug 27th so that’s something anyway.
Anna L says
One more recommendation Surreal Estate its about a group of real estate agents selling haunted houses, really great cast.
Im also a fan of High School Musical the series because casting talent teenagers is a good thing
RJ says
++1 Surreal Estate. although not sure whether the show has ended or will have a new season.
Barbara E. says
+1 Surreal Estate and Resident Alien too.
Viorica says
Hi,
Try Foundation. It’s with Lee Pace, has 2 seasons already, they are filming the next.
it is after Isac Assimov’s book. 🙂
RJ says
+1 -I preferred the Foundation TV show to the book.
Also Firefly remains one of my favorite shows. One season only before cancelled but very good.
Rachel says
Yes yes yes to Firefly. liked the film too but wished they continued the series. I mean I read the comics after but it’s not the same. loved loved loved Gina torres in it.
Heather says
NEVER trust a Fox Television executive!
Audrea E says
Heartstopper. Season 3 is out in the fall. It’s cute as hell. I also recommend the comic if you haven’t read it yet.
Lethe says
Your comment above reminded me of SurrealEstate, which is about a realtor (Luke Roman) who sees/interacts with ghosts, and decided to help people with haunted and possessed houses so they can be sold. It’s got a great and funny start. A little kitschy here and there but still worth the watch!
Victorria says
Also, Queen’s Gambit if you haven’t seen it already.
JrbVT says
+1 it was very good
Liz says
I recently finished binging The Apothecary Dairies’ first season. It’s a delightful historical fiction with poisons and light politics. Second season is on the way! (or there’s always the manga/light novels).
Mary says
I really adore Netflix’s Lockwood and co. It’s a spooky adventure drama with fun characters. Highly recommended. I was heartbroken when it was cancelled.
KstieV says
Me too. I don’t understand Netflix.
Katherine says
+1
Karin says
I also thought that Lockwood and Co was an Ok adaptation.
If you liked it: It is a series of 5 YA Novels by Jonathan Stroud and I did like the books more than the tv adaption.
Liv says
I enjoyed it. But. Cancelled too soon.
Laura says
Here to push ELSBETH. Although it’s a police procedural, I like that it’s not too dark or gory. Think Columbo (underestimated by everyone) but with Midwestern Mom energy (I love her costumes and her various tote bags and scarves).
Cynthia E says
Oh my gosh Elsbeth is the best! She is fantastic.
laura says
i did not expect to enjoy elsbeth as much as i did!
MJ says
Loved Elsbeth.
Verbena says
I watch a ton of Anime. And Netflix has some good shows that you may enjoy. Delicious in Dungeon, yes it’s a strange title, is amazing. The story is great and there are many funny shenanigans that happens. If you were ever a fan of playing Dungeons and Dragons there are many things about this show that reminds you of playing a fun campaign with a creative DM. They also added Demon Slayer, amazing story and the artwork is gorgeous. especially with the fighting scenes. The newest season is only available on Crunchyroll, the final part of the story will be done in a 3 part movie format. Anyways, hope this helps and perhaps you will enjoy the shows too. Cheers!
Keera says
Delicious in the Dungeon is amazing!
Sabrina says
+1 on Delicious in Dungeon, waiting for season 2 (has been confirmed) 🙂
D B says
+1 Delicious in Dungeon!
Di says
I gave up on tv. Audiobooks and dig thru my dvds.
cmc says
Good Omens! 2 very good seasons with a 3rd on the way.
Tink says
I didn’t watch these until the second season was out or about to come out. I didn’t realize there had been such a time gap between releases of the seasons, so I’m glad I watched it later.
Looking forward to the third season.
Side note, David Tennant is still my favorite Doctor (Who).
Stacey says
I’m so glad someone mentioned Good Omens! I come on here and my answer to everything is Neil Gaiman, so I was trying to branch out but couldn’t let it go unmentioned! as a lover of the book, I thought they did a nice job adapting and changing season 1 and then creating entirely new content for season 2 while keeping the heart of the original material. (And yes, I know Gaiman and Pratchett wrote the original together 😀)
Martyna says
omg yes 😻😻😻 I was about to recommend GO 😈😇
Heather says
Definitely my favorite tv show. I would recommend it to anyone who likes Fantasy in a modern setting and British humor.
Heather says

Exploding Kittens on Netflix (cartoon). God is sent to earth as a cat by the rest of the pantheon in Heaven because he’s become too out of touch. At the same time, the same happens to the Devil, because she just isn’t evil enough for hell. The devil tried to prove how evil she is by claiming that she designed all of the Trader Joe’s parking lots. Which, if you go to Trader Joe’s regularly, you know is a Significant Achievement in evil. Go cat is voiced by Tom what-his-name, who was the star of the TV series Lucifer.
Merano says
I often go back and re-watch GOOD OMENS on Prime when I’m in a funk. I LOVE the book (one of my all-time favorites) and they did a really good job on the tv adaptation (plus David Tennant and Michael Sheen–really, the perfect cast). Second season is good but I wasn’t as into it. There will be a third, final, season next year.
Waiting anxiously for the next series of SANDMAN. Really loved DEAD BOY DETECTIVES. AMERICAN GODS was a bit hit-or-miss, but, honestly, if Neil Gaiman is involved, it’s a good bet!
Vanna RR says
I have been consuming everything I can from Dropout TV. I watch Make Some Noise, Game-Changer, and I am utterly obsessed with Dimension 20’s DND campaigns particularly Fantasy High.
Kaitlin says
+1000
LOVE Dropout!
Samantha says
My Lady Jane on Netflix is wonderful! It’s a fantasy series done in the style of Elona Holmes movies (also excellent) with a dash of Bridgerton.
Tink says
I like the Elona Holmes movies, too. They’re working on the third one.
MJ says
Me too 🙂
Ellen says
Seconding all the Shogun recommendations but with a nervous system warning – the first episode is very very very dark, and features (spoilers) the killing of an infant and emotional fallout from his death. I had been forewarned and so skipped that whole bit, but even the tiny snippet I saw was incredibly hard to watch. So it might be worth approaching episode one with caution. The rest of the series is not exactly lighthearted, but is more standard, hey, living a long time ago was really hard and humans are soft and squishy and very fragile historical setting type stuff.
Viv says
thank you for that warning. I had thought of watching that but can’t watch anything with that content
Mary says
One Piece. One of top ten mangas from Japan made live action on Netflix. Dead boy detectives on Netflix.
Iswari says
Ilona,
I’m sending positive vibes your way for a speedy recovery 💐
Here is some of my favorite shows:
Reacher (working on season 3)
3 Body Problem (working on season 2)
The Witcher (5 seasons I think?)
The Wheel of Time (working on season 3)
A Discovery of Witches Trilogy (Coming soon to Netflix)
Enjoy!
Kendra says
I agree Discovery of Witches is really good.
It’s not fantasy but I would recommend the British version of Taskmaster (17 seasons on YouTube). It’s hilarious!
nancy says
yes taskmaster!!!
Rita K says
I watch with my family so all of these are both Gen Z and Boomer approved, haha.
Yellowstone (Netflix) – think Succession, but with cowboys. On a ranch. Fun in a gritty way.
Upload -(prime video) – a satirical comedy about a near future where you can upload your consciousness to the cloud after death. Surprisingly believable for a comedy, it has (occasionally dark) humour, a cast of fun characters & corporate conspiracy. Think Black Mirror x The Office.
Also seconding Resident Alien. Didn’t believe in at first but it won me over eventually. Funny, cute.
Valerie in CA says
CSI Miami – the real one. CBS and Paramount Plus
Great American Recipe – PBS. (Ilona you need to go on this show and beat the pants of these folks. ).
Any documentary on Amazon Prime has been good.
Forged in Fire- who doesn’t love current day blacksmiths going head to head?
Football!
Jessica Meditz says
we really enjoyed Fool Me Once. It’s only 8 total episodes, but has a solid arc (even though I found myself yelling at the main character quite a lot, haha).
It’s on Netflix under Thriller.
mz says
Miss Scarlet and the Duke (PBS) — tho I see that the Duke will not be coming back for Season 5 (oh no! The actor has other commitments)
And Mayday (explaining what happened re: airline disasters. My niece and I have bonded over this. (Discovery))
And anyone else looking forward to the Second Season of The Diplomat?
mz says
And forgot another oldie but goodie: Dead Like Me. 18yo gets hit by a toilet seat from a falling space station and dies but comes back to become, in essence, a grim reaper. Funny, funny, funny. Only 2 seasons — probably be Mandy Patinkin left to start working on that show about FBI tracking serial killers.
Melissa B says
oooh that was the best show! So bummed there were only 2 seasons.
Angela says
+1 Scarlett and the Duke. Technically no supernatural but competent female character kicking butt professionally as a private investigator in 1882 Victorian London fits the bill. Good cases, good laughs, satisfying competency, and a slow burn because her cop childhood friend Duke needs his sensibilities modernized in the worst way.
Angela says
it can be found on Amazon prime
Rowan says
Yes to The Diplomat!! So much. I have watched season 1 through twice already and am really feeling that cliffhanger.
BelleBok says
yes to the Doplomat !!!!
Eve says
Neftflix – Kdramas – The King Eternal Monarch, Hotel Del Luna, Mystic Pop-Up Bar, Tomorrow
Viki – Goblin (Guardian: The Lonely & Great God), My Roommate is a Gumiho, The Legend of the Blue Sea
Sam says
The Bear! It is so good! It’s categorized as a comedy, but it’s more of a drama, or a dramedy.
Zaena Burdick says
Well, I have to agree with Resident Alien…so now I have to recommend something different…lol…which is “Ghosts”- both the American and UK versions. Amusing and only 30 minutes each on Paramount Plus. UK version is over. The US version is on hiatus and back in the Fall; time enough to catch up on both.
Hope you and Gordon are feeling better and recover quickly!! HUGS!
Cindy M says
I’m disabled and watching TV is My jam these days unfortunately. It allows me to view a lot of TV good and bad. Alot of the things I would recommend have already been mentioned, such as Resident Alien, both the US & UK versions of Ghosts and Will Trent. These I did not see recommended: Sasha Reid and the Midnight Order, the Secrets of Skinwalker Ranch, Elsbeth, Ugliest House in America (there are a couple of seasons and they’re all hysterical), A Gentleman in Moscow, all seasons of Botched, Hollywood HouseLift, SurrealEstate, Special Ops: Lioness. This is by no means a complete list but it certainly is pretty comprehensive. I hope that you guys feel better soon. I will most definitely be wearing a mask on my face and gloves on my hands when I go out and about to the doctors from here on out, even though I’m boosted. I would probably die if I got covid, especially the one that you’re talking about. I’m just not healthy enough to fight that off. Thank you for all that you do even though you feel like crap.
Heather says
+1 Lioness
Julia S says
The anime “Campfire Cooking in Another World with my Absurb Skill” was a super cozy and cute anime to watch. Very feel-good and no angst. Also, I don’t know why but anime food always looks so delicious to me (especially Studio Ghibli’s)…

Christina Sherwood says
It’s not getting nearly enough attention & AMC isn’t running enough advertising but Interview with the Vampire is exceptional. It’s definitely not light hearted silly watching but it’s the only really great thing television wise right now. First season is about to be available on Netflix, season two just wrapped up on AMC & it was phenomenal.
Closer to the silly supernatural element, Umbrella Academy just dropped it’s 4th u final season
Axisor says
If the love of your fanbase could provide a moderate amount of protections from the illnesses in the world, the BDH would keep House Andrews from ever falling ill or suffering from any mental degredation.
All we can do is send our love and well wishes for the speediest of recoveries!
Katie says
My Lady Jane on Prime is SO good! Excellent chemistry between the main characters. All of the performances were very good to be honest. It takes the story of Jane Grey and turns it on its head. And there is a fantasy element too.
Older show and I’m not sure what platform is currently hosting but Raising Hope is one of my top favourites of all time. It’s a sitcom and is absolutely unserious. Great chemistry again between Virginia and Burt. And it also stars Chloris Leachman 😍
Arianna says
I’m slowly going through The Office on Netflix, the boss is hilarious amd cringy, while Dwight Schrute cannot be described. It’s just cute daily funnies in an office
Mary says
Corner Gas if you can get it,Reacher, and the Marvrlous Mrs Masiel all for free on the Freevee channel. Try finding the French Movie ‘Ca$h’ – a great con movie. Also look for the British series Hustle- a show about cons. And one more the tv show Tracker, found on Paramount
Josephine Marie says
I can highly recommend Good Omens – based on the book by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. Two series on Amazon and a third in the works.
And feel better soon!
Kristen says
Gordan Ramsey has a travel/cooking show on Nat Geo (Disney+) called Uncharted. It has travel and cooking and is just a nice show to watch when you don’t want to use any brain power. Epic Adventures and/or Animals Up Close with Bertie Gordie are both very cool shows to watch, also on Nat Geo/Disney+. Loki is really good, if you haven’t seen it. I watched it cause my daughter kept bugging me to and liked it way more than I expected to. And if you just want something adorable, I’ve watched all the “Zoo” shows.
Suzanne says
love the suggestions so many to look up. these are not fantasy but really good mystery ones. death in paradise – uk detectives on Caribbean island, culture shock, humour and clever mysteries, tie-in: beyond paradise, mcdonald and dodds – very smart uk odd couple detectives with some humour and unexpected twists. if you are looking for nostalgia and lightness original darling buds of may, remake not as good. all creatures great and small, based on books by James herriot, uk Yorkshire vet. charming and funny.2020 version very good. downton abbey always worth watching for costumes alone but stories great too, grandmother steals the show.
Marjory Montgomery says
Older shows that I loved are Eureka and Warehouse 13.
Lisete Pinto says
I always picture, Innkeeper serie being turned in something like warehouse 13, that in every episode there’s things happening, along with a maine plot…
like finding the parents, but in one episode they have to almost rescue Oro from a intergalactic warlord that didn’t take no for an answer and decided to “buy” him, or Maude bachelorette party in a honky tonk bar and a lot of troubles…
laura says
i love both of those shows! they have such a nice sense of humor!

+1 for Eureka! It’s been a while, but I remember really enjoying it and think it would hit the vibe Ilona was going for.

Eureka is my favorite! Farscape and Firefly. Love the quirky characters and the kooky situations.

First off, hope you and Gordon feel better soon and ModR enjoys her vacation. Second, I’m not currently watching anything specific, but I do enjoy the streaming service Tubi. It’s free and has a wide selection of TV and movies. Plus for every tv show I’ve watched on it if they have one season, they have all that are available.
Lisete Pinto says
Marvelous Miss Mazel ! 👌 Very funny
BDH member # 159 says
I would recommend “the good place”. You can stream it on Netflix, and it’s a comedy about a recently deceased woman named Eleanor Shellstrop and her adventures in the afterlife. I literally can’t tell you anymore, or it might spoil something. It is an amazing ride from episode 1 and it never jumps the shark over the entire three seasons it runs for. It is honestly in my opinion the best comedy tv series ever made. 🙂
Stacey says
yes! this is my absolute must watch #1 recommendation!
I would add this to the description. Eleanor is not a good person, but she finds herself waking up in the Good Place after her death. Not wanting to end up in the Bad Place, Eleanor embarks on a surprisingly deep yet comic, heartfelt and chaotic journey to find the answer to the question “What does it mean to be good?”
Eleanor is played by the fantastic Kristin Bell.
Jennifer says
I recommend Warehouse 13 for a lighthearted sci-fi comedy/drama. It is an older series about special agents who go around the world and collect magic artifacts that could cause trouble if left unattended.

I’m rewatching House, which as a nurse and now nurse practitioner is COMPLETELY ridiculous and unbelievable in many ways. However, it is still fun to watch. Honestly, watching Hugh Laurie act is always a pleasure. I don’t know that you and I have the same taste in shows (probably because I’m not a huge fan of a lot of TV and I’m not currently in school 😂. I used to watch more TV when I was in school because having something fun that I enjoyed in the background made doing school work so much more enjoyable lol). If you want something fun and ridiculous (and older so usually clever and well written) can I recommend either Jeeves and Wooster (yes, starring a very young Hugh Laurie lol) or The Goods/Good Neighbors? Both British and hilarious. (Note I’m from the US, but actually grew up watching these shows thanks to my parents – they were one of the few videos we had at home (on VHS – yes, I’m old).) if you want relaxing, then I vote for GBBO (Great British Bake Off). If you want to be sucked in (and possibly never sleep again 😂, but I’m a complete wimp so I might not be the best judge or your sleep needs), then I recommend Criminal Minds. I also love NCIS. I want to love the Witcher (Henry Cavill is AMAZING), I don’t love some of the decisions the show makers made.
Jenna says
Sending good thoughts and well wishes that your whole family feels better quickly.
Not gonna repeat stuff I’ve seen above, but +x to all the ones I replied to already.

Old faves I keep going back to –
Elementary Hulu
The Librarians Hulu
One Day At A Time (remake with Rita Moreno) Netflix
Criminal Minds (original and the sequel/spinoff/whatever we’re calling Evolution) Paramount+
Straight up, I could keep going, but I know the Horde is bombarding y’all, so I’ll leave it at that

The last season of The Umbrella Academy just premiered on Netflix today (8/8/24)! Urban fantasy/time travel/found family-siblings/ and no one takes themselves seriously (well maybe after the first season). Fun spunky, it’s the end of the world…again.
Chris G. says
Yes! Love Umbrella Academy in all its quirky glory. Last night we watched four episodes of the last season. Can’t imagine how they will wrap it up in just two more episodes. Great cast of characters, but I especially love Klaus!
Stacey says
I’m sad. UA was OK with my sensory issues at first (which is rare for a tv show) and then it turned up some dial or other and now while it’s still delightful it also falls in the “too much” category. I really want to see how the story ends, but I don’t think I can do it. 😕
KatieV says
Some funnies that always cheer me up when I don’t feel like thinking very hard.
What We Do In the Shadows the tv show – it is utterly ridiculous and I’ve almost peed myself a dozen times.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia – definitely dark, pushing the envelope humor, but it’s great. Seinfeld, if they were all alcoholics who sometimes smoked crack.
Schitt’s Creek – so funny and hopeful
Community – an older rec, but I never get tired of it (community college absurdity)
Bob’s Burgers – adult animation that just makes me happy. Such a weird, lovable little family. King of the Hill is another great adult animation, but if you are in Texas I’d imagine it’s required watching.
Rorie says
Marry me husband and Dinner Mate, k dramas that I binged.

Have you tried My Lady Jane? It’s ridiculous and sexy and dramatic and I feel like it would make good sick/recovery watching!

I’ve watched a lot of those others have mentioned, but my current go to need to watch something list within the fantasy/sci-fi genre is:
A Discovery of Witches
Motherland: Fort Salem
Warehouse 13 (some of the seasons go a bit meh, but overall I still enjoy it)
Supernatural (I skip some seasons as they make me lose interest)
Lost in Austen (not technically fantasy but it’s time travel so …)
Farscape
Heather says
Eureka! + Warehouse 13 are favorites of mine. Plus a shared universe!
Jan says
Watching mostly news about the election, since it’s more interesting that at least 90% of the TV shows currently available. (Primarily watching CNN cause their reporters are more fun – and probably more neutral.)
Simone says
I didn’t actually see it but I believe an evil thing jostled me on Tuesday so I dropped my (empty) travel mug on the escalator at work. The plastic rim chipped and it is now flaking plastic. I now have an excuse to buy a new tumbler 😁
Thank you for reopening the store for a couple of days.
I hope you both are felling better every day.
Sara says
Really enjoyed Vikings if you haven’t seen that yet.
Though not supernatural at all 2 others that are just feel good shows are Ted Lasso and Call the Midwife
Katie R says
I’m late to this thread so I hope you see these recs. Apple+ is my favorite of our streamers. I consistently like their original content. Such as: Slow Horses (one of my favorites about British MI6 outcasts starring Gary Oldman), Severance (weird mind messy story starring Adam Scott), Ted Lasso (you’ve probably already watched). Sugar was okay but diverting enough (modern noir starring Colin Farrell).
Currently Hubby and I are watching Shogun (the new one) on Hulu, and it’s good.
Also, Bob’s Burgers on Hulu is absolutely hilarious and sweet.
You are right about the strike hampering product, but Covid is still a factor as well. It takes a while for a show to actually make it to air, so those that get produced leaning into a certain zeitgeist often don’t get seen until after the trend is over. Hollywood suits frequently don’t see the forest for the trees and stomp all over the creatives’ work, and that’s a particular problem now with fewer shows in the works. AI is just going to make it worse. Show runners (hubby used to do that) are dropping like flies with burn out from the execs’ AI-inspired meddling. Just our experience here lately.
KatieV says
+1 Bob’s Burgers

If you like D&D and animation then check out The Legend of Vox Machina on Amazon. I also binged My Lady Jane on Amazon recently and really enjoyed it for what it was.

Upload is so good. In the near future you can upload your brain before you die, but have to pay to live in the “heaven” that you want. Hijinks ensue when the MC gets murdered and uploaded.
This is random, but my family really love the reality series Alone on the History channel. It’s bananapants in the best way and there are 10 seasons.

I’ve been watching cozy isekais on Crunchyroll for the most part, and they are delightful. I can work up a short list if anyone would like some recommendations.
Heather says
Here’s a list of things I would rewatch when sick in a heartbeat:
Fallout on Apple+. I was blown away at: how good it was, how true to the video game series it was, and how much I laughed watching it.
Romancing the Stone. Best romance movie ever. Romance Writing + reality crashing in. Argylle tried to get there and failed. The Lost City was fun and was about 70% as good.
Spy, with Melissa McCarthy. I did not expect to like. I did not expect to love! Peter Serafinowicz was mind blowingly funny here.
The Hot Ones, on Youtube. Stars eat really hot wings while trying to do interviews. They run about 15 minutes each. Don’t miss the one with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman.
Arcane season 1. Season 2 is coming out later this year. Very, very good adaptation of a VG franchise into a serial story.
If you still need something to watch dig up Pushing Daisies. Older, but an All Time Favorite.
Angela says
oh yeah romancing the stone is such a great send up of romance and action movies while still being a Great action and romance movie lol!
Heather says
I think I still have my VHS tape of it somewhere…
Heather says
Spy was so much better than it should’ve been 😄

Merlin from BBC.
I loved it from the start, knew exactly where it had to end, and it still broke my heart. Until then, it was light, fun, and the troll episode was perfection.
Melissa B says
Well, I can highly recommend Netflix’s “The Brothers Sun” which is a fascinating mix of drama and comedy, featuring Michelle Yeoh (who is decidedly awesome), and it’s All About The Family. It’s a Who are you supposed to be vs Want to be kinda show. Unfortunately….cancelled after first year. Rats.
And for my second pick…..”All Creatures Great and Small” on PBS. Somehow I blinked and now there are 4 Seasons! and I am behind, so will get to splurge on catching up soon.
I am otherwise totally not up to date on TV series so it’s fun to see what y’all are recommending. 🙂
Dorothy says
I was kind of emotionally fried a while back and All Creaatures Great and Small was so gentle and soothing. I don’t know when Season Four comes to the USA but when it does I am here for it

No one has yet mentioned Dark Matter from 2015. Handful of mercenaries wake up out of stasis on a spaceship with their memories wiped. Entertaining without being demanding, two thumbs up as an engrossing show to watch while curled in a blanket on a comfy sofa. Only down side is it’s on the CW, and you can’t avoid commercials.

++1 Just finished watching a couple of weeks ago. Cancelled in the middle of an interesting story arc.
I really hate that about sy-fy shows. I’d rather wait to see if there is a third season before i even bother to watch anything on sy-fy channel.

I just got recommendations today for “The Gentlemen” and “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder”, both on Netflix, that I intend to check out as I’m also in search of something that is not meh.
I’m waiting for the next Reacher – 2 seasons of competence porn indeed as another BDHer has said. Side note: Alan Ritchson (Reacher) is also great in the movie “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” with Henry Cavill.
Wishing you a speedier recovery!

This is totally outside of your genre but when feeling sick I like something that doesn’t require me to pay close attention to plot lines.
for a fun time – On Apple watch The Reluctant Traveler. Eugene Levy travels to the most unlikely places. He’d rather stay at home but he and his suitcase are off to explore the world as a senior citizen.
Britbox- Death in Paridise.
Fluffy detective show set in the Caribbean.
Weekly Plot: someone died. No one could have killed them. But someone did. Suddenly at the last moment the lead detective has a brain storm and calls all the suspects together to tell them who dunnit and how 🤔

British panel game shows like QI(Toksvig era preferred), Taskmaster, and 8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown. The new Batman animated series on Amazon. Anything with “Star Trek” in the title. And most oddly, true crime documentaries. I am a strange person.
Cat says
+1 to British panel shows! I’d add Would I Lie to You to the list. Rob Brydon (of The Trip, Gavin & Stacey— also both great and available on BritBox) is the host and has great chemistry with team captains David Mitchell and Lee Mack. On Netflix, Girls5Eva (late 90s girl group reunites in their 40s with hilarious results) has recently had me cackling loudly enough to be heard on another floor of the house with the door closed and is worth checking out. Hope everyone feels better soon.

I love supernatural/space/fantasy shows but a show which totally hooked us, “lets watch one more, oh is it midnight already?”My partner and I roared with laughter plus pull over the tissue box the show was, “Ted Lasso”, once you watch 2 episodes you are totally hooked. One Ted Lasso quote, “Just listen to your gut, and on the way down to your gut, check in with your heart. Between those two things, they’ll let you know what’s what.”
Sabrina says
What I’ve been watching just by myself, for myself is The Boyfriend (Netflix). Reality dating show, Japanese, where a bunch of sweet guys are set up in a house, given a coffee truck to run, and then we wait for romance to happen 🙂 so far, I’m not at the end of the season yet, it’s sweet and calm, which helps my nerves 😉

Kaiju No. 8. The main character wanted to be a Kaiju hunter with his best childhood friend. He failed the exam, she didnt. Years later she is an elite leader of her team and he has now gotten a second chance at trying. Only thing is he got turned into a Kaiju. His name is Kafka which makes me giggle.
SpyXFamily.
A spy takes on a fake family to get close to his target. But the little girl he adopts has mind reading abilities. The woman he hires to be his pretend wife is a secret assassin. No one is supposed to know he is a spy. Anya the littel girl hears everyone thoughts and tries her best to make her new mama and papa proud but no one except the dog knows she can read minds. She isnt so good at it. Oh and the dog can see the future. But its a cute show as they all try to find balance and not let out their secrets.

As soon as I saw you were looking for new shows to watch, I immediately knew I was going to recommend my very favorite show of all time: Penny Dreadful.
It definitely ticks the boxes on supernatural/fantasy, plus it stars the amazing Eva Green. It is kinda dark, and I know you mentioned no woe, but I have a feeling you won’t mind at all once you start watching, as I think Penny Dreadful is right up your alley.
I really hope you give it a try, as I’d be so interested to hear what you think of it.
I’m very excited for the store day(s)! I’ve never been able to shop the store before because I feel so bad spending money on myself when I have a toddler to support by myself, and a tight budget, but I saved for the makeup store day, and I’m going to treat myself to something as soon as I post this comment! I can’t wait ☺️
I hope y’all are feeling better! You must be truly unwell to have mixed up the days, and I’m sending all the good vibes for a swift recovery 🤞
Kimberly Hart says
Another show I MUST recommend for all the good feels and no woe or darkness is: Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. It’s a show set in the 1920’s, and the title character is an Australian flapper cum amateur Lady Detective who is WAY ahead of her time, with her revolving boy toys, fast cars, and fabulous clothes, house, & parties – all this whilst solving mysteries and getting in the way of a very handsome detective inspector who she has off the charts chemistry with.
The setting of 1920’s Australia is incredibly charming, the show is so amazingly good, and you can’t stop watching once you start. I’m almost positive you’ll love it, and it’s my very favorite show to watch while I work on a crochet project, which takes a particular type of show, IMO.
Famke says
+1 Love miss Fisher

I’m about to re-watch Penny Dreadful – first series in three seasons. Fantasy characters in plenty like vampires, witches and Dr Frankenstein. Also blood and gore and bleak tones. I don’t remember a volhv but it wouldn’t surprise me, except for being out of place in the English setting. Wonderful production values and acting, if sometimes a bit melodramatic.

I’ve been rewatching some older shows…Grimm, Haven, Warehouse 13, Fringe, Battlestar Galactica (one that came out 2004) because of having a hard time finding new stuff. Some more current shows that have new seasons coming (I think) are Resident Alien, Wednesday, The Sandman, Dead Boy Detective Agency (takes place in same universe as The Sandman so good), Ghosts (I have only watched US version, but UK one is the original and heard it’s amazing), Arcane (this is an animated series that is really good), Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Star Trek: Lower Decks (hilarious animated series, but probably have to be a Star Trek fan to appreciate it)
R Coots says
It’s not new, but it got an Amazon revival. Try Leverage. Campy theify fun.
Or The Librarians, produced by the same guy, I think. It started with three made for TV movies (Indiana Jones as a librarian, and he didn’t expect field work) which turned into five seasons of more campy fun.

Oh nooooo I’m devastated about Extraordinary I didn’t know it was cancelled. And on such a cliffhanger too!
I would mostly add +1s to the recs on here: The Brothers Sun, Uploaded, Stranger Things (assume you’ve probably watched this but the single best show on TV that’s lasted more than a few seasons in the last 10 years in my opinion), Shogun, The Boys, and The Artful Dodger (fun spinoff from Oliver setting in early colonisation of Australia).

Beforeigners. Scandinavian series. Only one season available, but quirky, weird, and funny. IMBD says ”A new phenomenon starts happening all over the world. Powerful flashes of light occur in the ocean, and people from the past appear from three time periods; the stone age, the Viking age, and the late 1800s. . .and the people from the past, called beforeigners, have no memory of what’s transpired. Some years later, detective Lars Haaland is teamed up with Alfhildr Enginnsdottir, the first police officer with Viking origin, to solve a mysterious murder.” It sounds dumb but I found it clever, funny and addictive.

I have recently turned to K and C dramas both fantasy and modern. I really enjoy a 40 to 50 episode contained story. I don’t want to commit to multiple seasons. My favorite by far is Vincenzo on Netflix. A Korean born Italian mafioso comes back to Korea to find a fortune in gold. While it is violent at times the characters around Vincenzo are quirky and hilarious. There is also romantic tension without it being the focus. Even though I use subtitles I crank the volume just to listen to Vincenzo’s voice.

I wholeheartedly agree with Resident Alien.
I love Umbrella Academy & it has a new season! I also LOVED Brothers Sun- lots of fun cultural Asian stuff (like mother constantly trying to feed everyone even at weird times) mixed in with gangsters and comedy. (Didn’t get renewed- very sad about this) it was in Netflix- I assume it still is?
‘From’ is another great one we loved! It’s from the makers of Lost. Only 1 season so far but another on the way and trailers look great.
I’m a Trekkie so I also love Lower Decks cartoon. And Star Trek Strange New Worlds- but if you’re not a fan you’d miss a lot.
I’m rewatching Arrested Development with my son this summer- we love that.
My sons really like The Boys on Prime. I liked the first season but sometimes it’s so disturbing or dysfunctional … lol I ended up letting it drop off during season 2 sometime.

We just gave up and got BritBox streaming service, have been watching older British mysteries. Faves are Poirot and Miss Marple (the Joan Hickson version), the newer Father Brown. Had a lot of fun with Rosemary and Thyme, but only 3 series and no real conclusion. Doing Shakespeare and Hathaway now: light and silly and gets an extra fillip from being set in Stratford-on-Avon amid the history and tourists (and the tourism workers and grifters who make a living from tourists).
Elizabeth H. says
If you need a good laugh, Mrs. Brown’s Boys is the ticket! It’s on the BBC but you can stream it on the BBC channel on Amazon Prime or find videos on YouTube. Mrs. Brown is the Irish equivalent of Madea. A man in a dress playing the matriarch of her Irish family. It’s soooo funny!
Kay says
It takes all kinds. I hated Mrs Brown’s Boys. No laughter registered. Not insulting your taste but a warning as humour can be very variable.

I’ve mostly quit watching tv since you can’t guarantee even the most popular shows won’t get cancelled. Last show I remember watching and enjoying is The Magicians (it’s complete). Most of the other shows I liked during that time got cancelled (Dark Matter! Killjoys! WHY!?) and I just never went back to tv.
Now I watch science shows where they find out what caused airplane crashes and not so bright people filming tornados. (I’m never flying again).

Mayday!!!!!
Can you tell I am a fan?
Calley says
Ooooo!! If you don’t mind subtitles then I have some good ones for you!
The Atypical Family – Korean and on Netflix. Family with superpowers targeted by a crew of scammers. So SO good, and the OST is perfect.
Lovely Runner – Korean again, on Viki. Teen romance with time travel.
Death and Other Details – if you like Only Murders then this will be up your alley. Murder Mystery on a cruise ship. On Disney.
Good Omens – on Prime. David Tennent and Michael Sheen having a rip roaring time with Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaimen’s novel. Just brilliant all round.
The Umbrella Academy – Netflix. Final season just released. So so good. Lots of absolutely bonkers scenarios, brilliant acting, great OST.
That’s all I can think of right now and I’m sure you’ve already watched some of them, but I hope at least one will relieve some of your tv-induced depression. Being sick and bored sucks, hope you all feel better ASAP!

Heather S already recommended it but “Hot Ones” on Youtube is great. its part of the “First We Feast” channel. It is competency porn at its best with the interviewer asking celebs a gamut of 10 questions while they guests eat a series of ever spicier wings. plus the host is named Sean Evans! I think there are at least 24 seasons available. new episodes every Thursday.
I also watch INCRadio on Youtube. there are a lot of satellite studio shows. my favorites are Florida, New York, and San Diego. those three usually debut new episodes on Saturdays.
“Gravity Falls” is on Disney+. I think there were three seasons and the story arc is complete. Animated show with some quirky, creepy vibes. Episodic in nature but a full, interconnected story emerges.
“Are You Afraid of the Dark”. on paramount plus. An episodic series where a group of teenagers tell each other stories.
“Revolutionary Girl Utena”. I’m not sure if this anime show is streaming anywhere, but the series was great. the movie is a sequel but not really. it’s all very mysterious and symbolic but very pretty to look at. 39 episodes with a complete storyline
“Princess Tutu” another anime. About a duck who gets turned into a girl. She has a crush on a prince. Beautiful score with lots of classical music and ballet themes. completed story with some surprising twists.
My brain cannot handle long movies or shows but I’m trying to get over that. I’ve watched and enjoyed:
“Everything Everywhere All At Once”. Multi-verse with alternate realities that really stuck with me
“Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping” Mocumentary of a popstar who emerged from his boy band start.

The Gentlemen on Netflix: A Guy Ritchie brainchild. British nobility gets into the marijuana business. the murder and mayhem that ensues is epic and hilarious! Firt season.
Jack Reacher on Prime Video: Crime thriller with an ex military protagonist righting wrongs and dispensing his own brand of justice. Two seasons with a 3rd upcoming.
Jack Ryan on Prime Video: Spy and political thriller. Lead characters are smart and dangerous. With international locales this will engage you for hours. four seasons.

3 of the 4 shows you listed are faves of mine as well (will have to give Extraordinary a try) — Evil’s final season has been a hoot 🙂 We’ve watched some great shows on Apple TV recently: Silo (Rebecca Ferguson, dystopian future/sci fi), Sugar (Colin Farrell, modern LA noir with… a twist), and Sunny (Rashida Jones, mystery). Here are a string of my favorites:
The Diplomat (Netflix). So well-written, well-acted and well-crafted. I’ve watched the series 4 times since last year and can’t wait for season 2 in October.
Sugar (Apple TV). A bit strange but you can’t help but love Colin Farrell in this role. He is amazing and I love the show.
Godless (Netflix). Really interesting western with Jeff Daniels and other amazing cast members, including Merritt Wever, who just shines in this.
The Bear (Hulu). If you love to cook, you’ll enjoy this show. It takes an episode or two to really get into it, but once you do, you’ll be hooked.
Lessons in Chemistry (Apple TV). One of most heartwarming and interesting shows I’ve seen. At the end of it, I just sat and started at the TV for about 15 minutes because I couldn’t bare to get up and leave.
Hijacked (Apple TV). It has Idris Elba. Nothing further needed. But it is an edge-of-the-seat thriller.
Trying (Apple TV). A funny and heartwarming show about a London couple living in Camden who want to adopt a baby. Great cast.

I’m late and discovered Derry Girls this summer during the wait between Bridgerton part 1 and part 2. Nicola Coughlan is great as Penelope Featherington but that woman has range! Derry Girls is set in Derry, Ireland in the mid to late 90s during the tail-end of the troubles. No supernatural stuff but this show is hilarious. It follows a group of teenage girls (and one boy) and their families. There are many shenanigans and I laughed out loud through most of the show. 3 seasons, 6-7 episodes each so it’s a quick watch. Highly recommend.
I’m a trekkie and really enjoyed the new Star Trek stuff but I would also recommend The Orville. It’s a bit of a Star Trek fanfiction so science fiction and futuristic. It’s funny and strangely enough, quite beautiful. There are 3 seasons and it took a little time for them to find their groove. There is some of that ridiculous humor Seth MacFarlane is known for, but as much as I laughed, I cried as well.

I just finished SweetTooth on NetFlix. It is set in a near future where society has crashed after the dual whammy of The Sick and the birth of all new babies being part animal (and very cute!). My Lady Jane on Amazon prime was really great fun.
Kay says
We watch Doctor Who, time travelling with recently increased gender diversity. A recent Bridgerton styled episode with nasty aliens was sweet. Since the BBC did a deal with Disney the production values have increased. Some viewers miss the “filmed in the quarry out the back” feel.
We also enjoyed Ms Marvel, YA on Disney and with a backstory including djinn heritage. If you missed it earlier, it’s worth watching.
Gail says
Big +1 to Ms. Marvel, Kamala Khan is an awesome example of the teen superhero genre and the series is super well done.

My Lady Jane! It’s brand new on prime video, so it only has one season, but it’s fantastic and entertaining.

Don’t know if it would be your thing, but Britbox has a show called “New Tricks” that has over 10 seasons of 10 episodes each. The premise is old unsolved cases with a team led by an active police detective and three retired and delightfully quirky detectives. Each episode is complete and the characters are interesting and relatable. There is quite a bit of humor mixed in. My husband and I find it a nice antidote to the bad news of the world. We allow ourselves one episode a day and will be sorry when we have seen them all.

I got through most of the comments and haven’t seen recommendations for Call the Midwife (Netflix/PBS, women’s fiction set in the 1950-60s with opportunities for tears and smiles, generally cozy) and Deadlock (Prime, very funny comedy set off New Zealand with lots of gender commentary.

I really enjoyed We Are Lady Parts. it is light and fun, but the characters (brown Muslim Women in London) aren’t what I generally see in mainstream media.
Crystal Francis says
I enjoyed:
The Extraordinary Attorney Wu, featuring a brilliant young attorney with autism (S. Korean—subtitles)
The Midnight Diner (especially the music) (I forget the setting—Asian in a large city like Hong Kong—subtitles)
Professor T, a British murder mystery with endearing but strange characters
You can decide about each just on the strength of the first episode.
Sabrina says
The Midnight Diner – that’s Tokyo, I binged that series recently when I was in the slumps, so soothing! For me personally the first 3 seasons were best, though occasionally I skipped one because I didn’t like that episode’s theme. But they’re all standalone so that’s fine. Seasons 4 and 5 were made by Netflix – better production, but I found I kinda liked the shoestring-budget feel of the first seasons, ymmv.
Julie says
We are currently halfway through My Lady Jane, which is absurd but funny. The alternate history version of Jane Grey, except instead of protestants vs Catholics it’s non-shifters vs shape shifters. And it takes “A Knight’s Tale”‘s irreverent passing familiarity with historical authenticity.
Susan McKinney says
I’m always busy with meetings throughout the month so I’ve been going back and ordering through interlibrary loan dvds of series I missed. Right now, I’m working through Psych. The crimes/mysteries are interesting but Shawn and Gus can drive me nuts with their immaturity (which is the premise of the show).
NCIS: Sidney first season. LOVED it. I’m a big NCIS/CSI fan but I loved the setting and the characters are quirky but interesting.
Ghosts (the British series)…Hilarious and quirky, yet has it’s serious moments when the ghosts discuss how they became a ghost. I’m getting ready to watch the 3rd season.
Loved The Mentalist
Nancy says
Haven – an older show (5 seasons) about a town where some people have abilities and weird stuff happens
Expanse – excellent sci-fi
Dead Boys Detectives
nedibes says
I really enjoyed School Spirits (the Netflix one–someone else mentioned that there’s a different show with the same name?). It’s like Veronica Mars, but Veronica is also Lily–she wakes up a ghost, and has to try to solve her own murder. It has been renewed for a second season, though who knows what that means exactly nowadays.
Some oldies that I’ve been rewatching are Bewitched (probably the first step on my journey to the BDH!) and Scarecrow and Mrs. King. Bewitched is on Freevee (free with ads) but I think I actually had to buy seasons of Scarecrow & Mrs King. Reruns of both were staples of my childhood, and they mostly hold up–other than the really awful gender stereotypes/expectations, especially in Bewitched–as pure popcorn fun.
An oldie that I only discovered recently is Slings and Arrows, a Canadian show about the company at a Stratford Festival-like Shakespeare company. It’s amazing, especially if you have any interest at all in theatre and/or Shakespeare. It isn’t, itself, supernatural, but Shakespeare is in the DNA of modern western supernatural anything, right? Each of its three seasons focuses on a different production, and season 2 is centered on the Scottish play, so witches! I watched it with an AMC subscription (which is how I also found A Discovery of Witches, mentioned here by others and also recommended), but sadly it seems to have migrated to Acorn–I have no idea whether that’s worth it.
Aaaand…if you do have an interest in Shakespeare, the veeery old BBC specials, Playing Shakespeare, are amazing. They’re basically filmed workshops of Royal Shakespeare Company actors working on scenes–super sincere, nothing like modern TV at all, but fascinating. There are a bunch of famous faces–young Patrick Stewart, Judi Dench, Ian McKellan, guy who played Poirot, Ben Kingsley–and it’s just fun and absorbing. It’s about the most accessible version of Shakespeare I’ve seen that doesn’t change any language at all. All of the episodes are available free on Youtube.
Ann-Marie says
Two very different shows come to mind. The Legend of Vox Machina is a cartoon (adult themes and situations) based on the D&D campaign of a bunch of voice actors. Available on Prime. The Repair Shop is a British show where experts bring beloved antiques back to life. There’s something about watching seriously competent people do something they love. Full seasons available on YouTube.

Hope that you kick this thing.
I’d posted about a coconut oil-laced ginger tea to remove the gargled-with-glass-shards throat pain. It DOES work, and FAST.
I forgot to mention Turmeric for the loss of sense of smell. It also works – the earlier in the infection, the better. But, even later, it’ll work – it just takes longer.
By the way, I tried both of these remedies for my Covid symptoms, because they were successful in group trials in other parts of the world (I’m a Health Ministry Data Analyst who does a looooot of research).
Best of luck!

+1 to so many things – Resident Alien, My Lady Jane, Not Dead Yet, both UK and US Ghosts
May have missed these in the comments but also fun:
– School Spirits – angsty teen ghost solving her death mystery which is like eating junk food – it can’t be good for you but I couldn’t stop watching
– Lower Decks – Star Trek but comedic, animated, and a love letter with so many easter eggs you want to watch the actual shows
And number one favorite – Taskmaster (UK, New Zealand, and Australian versions are all excellent). Pretty widely available on YouTube. Comedians attempting to do things (of varying degrees of complexity, creativity, and oddity) and getting awarded points for doing it. That is a super fail description and doesn’t do this series any sort of justice but for me it’s one of the most feel good things just ever.

See some of my faves listed so I will go with My Lottert Dream Home. It’s been on for several years so plenty of episodes “on demand” as well as new. I love David who is openly gay & so funny. Who else would go to Dallas Tx in a PINK cowboy outfit including spurs.
It is a feel good program, with people who win lotteries big & small & want a home. He travels all over the US & Canada meeting these winners (they contact him) & finding them the home of their dreams. It’s a half hour long one show per couple.
Otherwise I have Disney + & Paramount + for all the new Star Wars & Star Trek series.

Recently finished watching Deadloch on Prime. It was very funny and suspenseful. Hard to describe, so I pulled the description from IMDB: “A feminist noir comedy set against a bucolic backdrop with a rising body count.” It’s set in Tasmania and was a crazy funny (or maybe crazy/funny) limited series. My husband and I both enjoyed it.

I don’t know if anyone recommended it but our Covid series was Big Bang Theory. Totally appeal to the nerd in me. At the end of the series, we actually mourned a bit as if we had lost real friends.

Illona and all – First up your Vit D, C, and Zinc, please try to gargle with Listerine Mouth Wash, it will kill the germs in your throat, as it’s 60% alcohol almost. When we go into public, in the evening, we gargle and brush teeth, then I before bed (usually midnight-TMI) gargle again. We hardly ever get sick, 72YO, so no spring chicken here. Get well soon.

Power of the Rings on Amazon Prime is excellent. The scenery and CGI enhancements are gorgeous. There are several storylines threaded together like on Game of Thrones. The characters are extremely compelling and have complex backstories and character arcs. There are definitely some storyline holes and parts where you wish they would dig in more, but as a whole, it’s very well done. Season two comes out at the end of the month and I just rewatched season 1 again to catch all the nuances that I missed the first time around. I highly recommend.

Music, costume, production values, cinematography are fantastic. I just wish it wasn’t so unrecognizable in how far it has strayed from Tolkien’s writings

I love the Will Trent show on ABC. It’s had two seasons and are renewed for a 3rd. I think it streams on Hulu. I dare you to watch the first episode. It sure hooked me and I’ve love it ever since. Great cast!

Yes, to what you say on TV Shows. Tried Legion, 4 episodes just showing how messed up he is because of his “talents”, bored me to tears. However, ST-Strange New worlds and The Orville, mostly grabbed me in EP-01. Left NCIS years ago, the characters I liked left show.
Writers strike has changed the schedule on shows, ST-SNW/Orville/Wednesday all delayed till very late in 2024 or not filming until 2025. The creators need to understand, we viewers are not so “in love” with their shows we are going to wait forever, nor put up with just very bad writing. Other things keep me from watching a show, but won’t mention here. IMHO-Seth MacFarlane has great talents, check out some of his stuff.

What We Do In The Shadows
A mockumentary following four vampires living in Staten Island New York and the human familiar who cares for them to his near peril. It’s hilarious and a bit raunchy at times, but never takes itself too seriously.

So many shows I haven’t heard of. I will check out many of them. But honestly, I don’t watch TV much so we usually end up waiting till the seasons are over and then renting them from the library.
So that being said, my list will probably be old to most of you.

White Collar
Parks and Recreation
To All the Boys series
Longmire
Twin Peaks
Mad Men
Derry Girls
Black Sails

You might like Silo on Apple + (got renewed for a second season), The Last of Us, Fallout (Amazon Prime),
Of course Game of Thrones / House of the Dragon are good ones on HBO. If you can stand the gore: True Blood (based on the Sookie Stackhouse books) — one of the BEST endings of a show ever.
The 100 is pretty good and has an awesome show ending. But if Clark says “my people” one more time… I just might have to smack her.
The Walking Dead is a great journey. Fear the Walking dead is ok… the OG show is awesome!
Happy watching! Get better soon!

I am going to add on two of my favorites from a few years ago for their kick ass feminism (that applies to both male and female characters) of Winona Earp and Killjoys.
Killjoys is a sci-fi romp with bounty hunters and does such an excellent job letting male and female characters be complex and flawed and fun, and showing complex relationships in really compassionate ways.
Winona Earp the pilot isn’t great, you have to make it to episode 3 before it takes off, but then it is great. She is the descendant of Wyatt Earp and cursed to have to hunt down his resurrected enemies, but really she just wants to get drunk and have a good time. And the actor who plays Doc Holliday (also on Surreal Estate and Schitts Creek) is just perfect as her romantic interest and back up.
Cathy R says
+1 for Killjoys
patricia says
+1 for Killjoys as it was very inventive in a dystopian space future.
Lost Girl is about a woman who discovers she is a succubus and who does not want to align with either of the Fae courts.
Touchwood is a British show about the members of a secretive government agent protecting the country from strange stuff. Men in Black without the suits or the arrogance
Doc Martin is another British series. It is a comedy drama about an irascible brilliant surgeon forced to become a rural GP when he develops a blood phobia

Wynona was fantastic! Now I need to rewatch.

My Lady Jane on Amazon Prime
Alternative history of tutor England where instead of a religious divide it is a magical one where some people change into animals. Fantastic deadpan narration.

I’m probably no help in the TV department as I don’t actually have a tv. But I’ve been revisiting things (via phone and YouTube). Bones is a staple and I’ve been finding old music that hits really well and I’ve added to my playlists. And Leverage, both the original AND the new one from Amazon, which is OK, but still not as good…
But Ancient Tracks with Sir Tony Robinson is a favorite find on YouTube and hits my nostalgia buttons, even though I’ve never been to England. Also, Time Team.

Hope you both feel better soon…here are my fave TV picks:-
– 12 Monkeys (TV series …based on the film but so much better and I would say most if not all jump timelines made sense)
– Penny Dreadful
– Winnona Earp
– Killing Eve (first series is brilliant w/Jodie Comer and Michelle Yeoh)
– Ragnorak (Norwegian series … sort of weird but I got into it)
– Resident Alien (so funny, especially the interactions between the alien and the young boy)
– iZombie
– Person of Interest (especially when they follow the story arc rather than crime of the week)
– Hollywood Houselift with Jeff Lewis (full of celebrities spending money on their houses … can be bonkers)
Cathy R says
Elspeth streaming on Paramount plus. Funnier female version of Columbo. The star Carrie Preston is married in real life to the Lead of Evil Michael Emerson.
Resident Alien is fantastic.
I you never watched the short-lived Serenity with Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk, it is a much loved never matched cult classic. (Nathan Fillion voices the Octopus on Resident Alien.)
Castle starring Nathan Fillion as a writer and NYC police consultant. Gordon referenced him during the Ble Willow Zoom.
Very old show the Adventures of Brisco County Jr. with Bruce Campbell as a tongue in cheek Western .
JLAgirl says
I see the Horde shares good taste. Most things I would suggest are already on here (Expanse, Leverage, the Rookie, etc, etc). I just finished Those Who Are About to Die. I love a good “historical” romp. It was good. Also would recommend Rome (an oldie), all Spartacus series, and the Last Kingdom.
Has anyone listed Snowpiercer yet? Movie or show. Way better than I expected.

I love Sci-fi, I’ve tried several times to get into the Expanse and I can’t get past the first episode. 🙃

Currently I am enjoying my nostalgic wave – I am looking at Anime classics from 80′-00′.
I’ve finished Yu Yu Hakusho and Hunter x Hunter 1999 (it also has beautiful OP 1) and now I am watching Ranma 1/2 again, then I’ll probably go for Juuni Kokki (Twelve Kingdoms) and Saiunkoku Monogatari or if I feel more romantic then, Nana or Paradise Kiss.
Robin Šebelová says
Oh, and HxH 1999 ED 1 is even better:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUcHimuCWAU
KC says
I love Saiunkoku Monogotari. Have you tried Snow White with the Red Hair? Like Shurei the main female character works hard, is smart, admirable, and catches the notice of royalty. It so gives me the feels. Despite the title, the snow white aspect (nominally present) disappears quickly from the storytelling.
I wish Nodame Cantabile was available over here. Who knew an anime about musicians and conductors would be cracking fun?
P.S. Ranma 1/2 is rebooting, debuting this month.
Robin Šebelová says
Yup. You can find funnies/jokes in anime where you least expect it. Have you seen a Baccano? Hellsing TV/Ultimate?
Did not know about Snow White, I will look it up.
I know of Ranma remake, first episode is to be released on 6th October, though I am not excited.
I was pleased by return of original Japanese voice actors, but really disappointed by the color palette shown in trailer – there is way too much gamma and very low saturation of colors. And there is even worse sin (from my POV): Ranma-chan now has violet/magenta hair instead of bright red.
Cathy R says
Elspeth streaming on Paramount +. Hilarious clever female similar to Columbo.
KC says
I second this recommendation it’s so delightful.
The eponymous Elsbeth is bright, cheery, seems a touch bumbling, but is one shrewd cookie that’s just kind and generous.
Lisa Lenox says
We watch Will Trent, Designated Survivor, just finished the Tourist. I watch Evil but only in the early evening. Never right before bed. And I have to watch a palate cleanser right after, cause yeah.
Designated survivor made it three seasons. It should have gone longer. In 2017, three years before the pandemic, they had a storyline about, yes, a pandemic. Greedy pharmaceutical companies are the big bad here, and not disinformation and stupidity.
It’s gripping, well written, and maybe shows a little peek into the workings of the government. It’s gotten me more interested in how the government works, which is just weird, because civics was one of my least favorite subjects.
The tourist is also well-written, tense, and you are never quite sure what’s going to happen. It’s populated by really weird people, which is always fun. One of the really cool things about it are the stars. Jamie Dornan and Danielle Macdonald are the romantic leads. When was the last time a Danielle Macdonald was a romantic lead? Inspired.
Sharon Leahy says
With all my heart, I’m begging you, please watch the movie on Netflix, EASY A. I’m absolutely positive you’ll be laughing out loud. The female lead reminds me so much of Arabella’s personality, and her decisions are what I’d imagine Arabella would do if she was in that situation in her high school age. It’s so delightful, and so satisfying, and a gorgeous example of a teenage female finding her courage and not-give-a-shitness and wearing it loud and proud. And Stanley Tucci is the world’s funniest, absolutely best father in that movie. And OMG, there’s just so much fun in this movie. Well filmed, well directed, colorful, excellent personalities in the characters, it will definitely brighten your mood.
Ms. Kim says
Sorry, I’m watching reruns of Mom and Young Sheldon.

I did a re-watch recently of Ugly Betty, I love that show. Based on a Colombian soap opera. It’s refreshingly different from most American television. Has characters you love, dome you live to hate. It’s like a more vibrant and fun Devil’s Wear Prada but made into a soap. So much character growth. If you’ve not seen it before it’s worth checking out.
I tried my luck with some Asian revenge historical drama, but too many characters I was waiting for them to receive their delicious come uppance, seemed to get off without the appropriate amount of consequences.
Netflix has some supernatural shows I’ve enjoyed. Lockwood & Co. was awesome, but sadly canceled after a season. Unusual premise of ghosts everywhere and only the young can fight them. I’m currently watching Dead Boy Detectives and enjoying it for being different too.
For a Sci-fi, Resident Alien is awesome. The show is ongoing but there’s a few seasons out. Anti-hero main character that is an alien sent to earth to destroy it, but starts trying to save it. The show has wry, humor. Crazy and outlandish moments.
For fantasy, the animated show on Netflix the Dragon Prince. Complex characters and stories, magic, dragons, elves and more. From part of the creative team behind Avatar the Last Airbender.
I wish Netflix didn’t cancel Shadow & Bone that was a great fantasy show with some inspiration from Slavic & Russian Mythology & Culture.

You very likely know about these but they never disappoint:

– Mystic Pop-Up Bar (2020) – on Netflix, K-drama, fantasy slice-of-life show with a mystery element about woman who helps clients of her pop-up bar via magical dreams
You want fluffiest fluff that ever fluffed:
You Are My Glory (2021) – on Amazon or Viki, C-drama, two former classmates meet years after high-school and their friendship slowly develops into love (mature, reasonable people; no love triangles; no major misunderstandings)

I’m in the midst of a ME/CFS/Long Covid crash; I’m having an hard time with overstimulation so tv’s out. I want to share listening to something on Audible: Nora Robert’s Dragon Heart Legacy trilogy. The characters, story and world-building are so well done. I wish it was on Graphic Audio yet am really enjoying the single narrator. I only share this because I’ve learned sometimes I need to cut out a sense (not to start a thread within a thread) to be able to take in a story.
For tv though, my Asian series favorites are The Rookie Historian, Who Rules the World and King the Land. And the simply beautiful, slow-moving, The Makanai: Cooking for The Maiko House. For fantasy, I like James Cameron’s Avatar (2009); paired with its sequel, it’s like a mini-series. I enjoyed A Discovery of Witches too. I sure hope you feel better soon.
Cathy R says
The Graphic Audios are available through your public library via Hoopla and Libby. Micheal J Sullivan has several interconnected series, probably close to 20 books on GA. They got me though a long post-surgical recovery. Start with Riyria
Revelations is a good place to start.
I hope you recover soon. I never imagined that watching TV would be too exhausting, but now I know how that can be.

A Shop for Killers on Hulu – K-drama about a girl who finds out her Uncle runs basically a crazy home depot for assassins, and then of course all the killers come try and kill them (as they do)
Kaiju no 8 on Crunchyroll – anime about a sweet, middle-aged loser/has-been who decides to take one more crack at his dream of joining the bad-ass military squad who fight kaiju

As I read through some of the comments, I realized I’ve watched a lot of the shows that have already been suggested to you. I personally love sci-fi and romance, and it doesn’t have to be in that order. Preferably together, I list some below that I don’t think we’re mentioned. Hope it helps.
Moving (Korean series on Hulu): It’s about teens with powers and their parents dangerous past.
Misfits(British sci-fi) this series from 2012. You may have seen it but if you haven’t, it is really good. A group of teens doing community service develop powers after an electrical storm.
Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahanni: (Hindi movie) yes that is the title in its entirety. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie because it gave me a traditional love story without necessarily giving me a traditional love story, if that makes sense.

I have very limited TV access but I have fallen in love with the Mick Herron Slow Horses books, and what I have seen of the show trailers on my cell phone has been amazingly good. Of course, I have a huge crush on Gary Oldman, dating back to Sirius Black and the Gotham commissioner, but his portrayal of Jackson Lamb is outstanding. I love reading about Jackson and I am extremely glad I don’t work with him.
There was a police procedural series called Homicide: Life on the Street, which had the bad fortune of being scheduled in conflict with the original CSI. On the other hand, Homicide had the incredible Andre Braugher. Another “good guy” who you would really really hate to work for.
For the sore throat, take some Countrytime lemonade mix, mix up a mug full of lemonade, and heat it in the microwave. It’s like a hot toddy and it takes the sore throat pain away. Chicken soup does wonders. And if you have access to a slushie machine at a local convenience store, orange creamsicle slushes can calm down sinus pain as well as a sore throat.
Kathy says
I’m +1 on a a lot of the things listed above, so I’ve got some retro suggestions – in a couple of cases very, very retro suggestions.
I’ve been watching more movies than tv right now. My brain’s too fried for most episodic shows.
“Howl’s Moving Castle” is an easy intro to anime and beautifully done. It’s based on the book by Diana Wynne Jones, which is great too.
Someone mentioned “Campfire Cooking in Another World.” I haven’t seen the show, but the books are hysterical. It’s a portal fantasy and let’s just say he isn’t quite what the summoners were expecting.
“Shaun of the Dead” and the rest of the Cornetto trilogy.
“Spaced,” a tv short series, which stars Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and the rest of the group and was directed by Edgar Wright. Late 90s.
“Groundhog Day”
“Raising Arizona”
“Xena, Warrior Princess”
“My life is Murder” – also starring Lucy Lawless. Set in Australia and then New Zealand. Former cop/PI with a hacker (female,) assistant.
“The Prisoner” late 60s. Short British TV series. Patrick McGoohan in his glory days. A spy unexpectedly wakes up in this weird little English village where everyone wears the same thing as is known by a number – he’s No. 6. Weird things happen.
“The Avengers.” The British tv series, specifically the Diana Rigg years. A “spyish” show, but with odd goings on. The later years are okay, but more straightforward.
If you only know Diana Rigg as Lady Olenna Tyrell from the Game of Thrones, you have to see her play Emma Peel in all her catsuitted, karate chopping glory.
“The Twilight Zone”
“Plan 9 from Outer Space.” – you really need to see it, but only if it”s free.
BOLLYWOOD – I like K/ C shows, but I adore Bollywood. “Bride and Prejudice” from 2004, is an easy entry point.
BONUS
“The Crimson Permanent Assurance” – a Mont Python sketch that was part of the movie “The Meaning of Life”. Elderly employees rebel against new owners and turn pirate with the office building becoming the ship. It’s a hoot and is on YouTube – about 10 – 15 minutes.
“Tasting History with Max Miller.” YouTube. Want to know what they ate on the Orient Express. What the different classes ate on the Titanic? What they served in medieval taverns? What pioneers ate going west? What they ate at the Colosseum? He discusses the food, making different dishes and then gives more history. Good use of primary sources.
“Night of the Comet” – early 80s – Valley girls survive the zombie apocalypse/end of the world.
“Eating Raoul” – also early 80s. Not supernatural, but really, really weird and funny. NOTE: if you prefer more vanilla comedies, I strongly suggest reading reviews first. I don’t remember much in the way of nudity or bad language, but the premise and some of the situations are out there.
Kathy says
Ok, some formatting issues – my apologies. “NIght of the Comet” and “Eating Raoul” should be under “Raising Arizona”.

I know you like kdramas but since the “like these” shows mentioned were non-subtitles I’m gonna assume you need something you can listen to without reading
I haven’t watched anything new in English since discovering Kdramas, but when I’m in a funk or need background noise I go to my old fallbacks – most of which I have on dvd or purchased on Amazon.
The Mentalist- 7 seasons each better than the last
Early Edition – man gets tomorrow’s newspaper today, and sets out to change bad news (prevent accidents, etc). Watched this while I was crashing at a friends after a house fire, because it’s almost guaranteed only good stuff happens. Also, eye candy.
Intelligence- man with experimental chip in his head to access internet working for government agency(only half season sadly)
Human Target (2010) assassin turned bodyguard, love the character dynamics
Due South – backwater Canadian Mountie moves to Chicago and is teamed up with a jaded detective “and for reasons not worth exploring at this juncture has remained attached as liaison to the Canadian consulate”. Really funny. His dead father provides totally useless commentary only he can hear, and his sidekick is a deaf lip-reading wolf.
Other stuff worth watching more than once:
Stargate
Stargate Atlantis
Eureka
Teen Wolf (2011 tv series-5? Seasons) surprisingly addictive

– The Irregular at Magic High School – originally a Japanese light novel it was well adapted to anime
– Voltron -Netflix – space robot adventure animation

The most amazing, interesting, fun, creative thing I’ve seen in years is Beforeigners. It was on HBO but they pulled it (there’s talks of a remake last I checked). Supposedly it’s on Prime but I don’t don’t know if they lie.
HBO Europe made a show about time travelers but fully committed with a healthy budget.
Imagine time travelers from the past start showing up in the bay of Oslo Sweden. It becomes an immigration problem with a lot of sly jokes about challenges with assimilation and other cultural issues. This divorced jaded Scandinavian cop is assigned a Viking Shield maiden immigrant as a partner. They have to solve a crime. The cop is also juggling the fact that his wife left him to marry a 19th Century painter who’s more sensitive than him and his teenage daughter. There are great jokes about hipsters in pursuit of ‘authenticity’. I cannot do it justice for how much subtle and dry humor there is. The Viking immigrants think everything modern is lame. The 19th Century immigrants think everyone is lacking culture. The Paleolithic immigrants are confused and have mostly become street people except for one who’s married to a modern ‘lifestyle blogger’. There’s one rather disturbing scene of an animal being butchered by food – you’ll know it’s coming when you see a naked man – and because this is European, there are shots of a fully naked man but not many shots of female nudity. The first season is amazing. The second season isn’t quite as good but still has moments. I’m trying not to give too many spoilers but it’s really fun seeing the Viking shield maiden who’s now a cop make her partner super uncomfortable with frank discussions of her period.
People of earth was excellent but cancelled after two seasons – it involves, among other things a support group for people who’ve experienced alien abduction but aliens are real and might even be the barista at your coffee shop.
There are a lot of more classic comedies and or romantic comedies I can recommend but they’re less fantasy (but still highly imaginative) but not sure if you want something more recent?
This might be too creepy, but I also love Fortitude which is like the X files set in the arctic circle. It’s an Amazon show. Something is killing residents and you’re wondering if it’s an Inuit legend come to life, a bizarre virus or something else. It has a few intense scenes but they can be figured out ahead of time by reading IMDB. It has Stanley Tucci as a special investigator from interpol.

I’ve been rewatching Bones lately, and Anne with an E. Surreal Estate, about a realtor who specializes in haunted houses, is pretty charming.
You can never go wrong with a Firefly rewatch (We aim to misbehave. If you’re not a Browncoat yet, give it a watch and join us!), or a Buffy or Angel or Dollhouse rewatch- anything by Joss Whedon, really, but especially Firefly.
All Creatures Great and Small and Call the Midwife (by BBC, you’ll probably find it on PBS), are both exceptional dramas/dramadies, though nothing supernatural or paranormal.
Derry Girls is a delight- Sister Michael is my spirit animal. My Adventures with Superman is cute and fun.
A Haunting, pseudo-documentaries about suspected haunted houses and demon infestations, is an occasional guilty pleasure.
Lucifer is fun (Maze x Trixie are an absolute joy, though it takes awhile before they become friends) , Supernatural is a blast, and iZombie is much better than I expected and absolutely worth checking out.
Alan Tudyk is amazing and hilarious in Resident Alien, and The Expanse is great hard scifi. The Ark was fun, too.
I keep rewatching all of The Witcher because, though season 1 is my favorite, with black hair Henry Cavill would look like Hugh d’Ambray (in my head, at least), so I keep enjoying my imagination that has him playing Hugh.
Elves- it’s Swedish or something, dubbed, if I recall- was interesting. Family visits the countryside and ends up behind the fence that keeps…beings… from becoming a problem for the local humans.
Black Summer for very fast zombies.
The Gift
Castlevania
Stranger Things
I’ll stop now.

Holy moly! Thanks for posting this- trying to find new series is hard! Extraordinary is awesome. I keep hoping Disney/Hulu will give it another go for season 3. Here are a few others:
•Psych! I have to mention Psych the tv show. It’s older, but it’s so much irreverent fun. We’ve watched the entire series three times now.
•Galavant is fun, too- it’s like a mish mash of high school musical and Monty Python and the HolyGrail. I haven’t finished the series yet, though. Timothy Omundson from Psych plays the King.
•Ted Lasso is snarky sweet. I love the non-verbal interplay. Can’t go wrong watching it, plus it is still ongoing.
•The Boy and the Heron- haven’t watched it yet, but saw that the new Hayao Miyazaki film is streaming now, too.
•Actually, I’ve been on an unintentional Mandy Patinkin journey. Death and Other Details (like Glass Knives, but a show- very clever), Dead Like Me (Just where do grim reapers come from? Show), and the Princess Bride- movie. What can I say?
•The jury is still out on this one- Just started watching Bodkin. BBC /Ireland murder mystery that seems to have some sort of mystical bent- protagonists are a bumbling American podcaster, his assistant, and a journalist trying to get to the bottom of a cold case murder. First episode is a little slow, but it ends with a wolf blocking the path and the journalist looking it dead in the eye and saying, “ f**k off, wolf”, and stomping down the road. Good line- will keep watching.
Feel better to all!

I know that animation is not for everyone, but if you haven’t seen is yet, Arcane. It’s an animated show produced by Riot Games and animated by Fortiche Animations based on League of Legends (currently on Netflix). You don’t need to have played LoL at all, the story gives you everything you need to understand the world, characters, and motivations without any game knowledge.
The story follows two sisters trying to survive in this steampunk-ish universe. It has amazing character arcs and beautiful animation. The story can be gut wrenching at times and light and hilarious at others. It’s one of the better shows in recent times.

Hi, I am 3/4’s of the way through watching My Lady Jane, and I love it! It is an alternate reality England, where not everyone is entirely human. The characters are brilliant, ghastly, and hilarious by turn. I find myself guffawing and wishing to quaff some ale or grab a sword as I watch. Huzzah!

My husband is a fan of the game “Fallout” so when the series came out this year he started watching it. It caught my eye as I was walking by and started to watch. Without playing the game I was still able to follow the story line. I enjoyed it, a lot. Which, considering I would rather read than watch TV, is saying something about the show. I recommend it for storyline, creativity with special effects, and the actors were good with the portrayals of the characters. The monsters are suitably monstery. Science Fiction, more than Fantasy, but certainly not Star Trek or Star Wars. Give it a try.

Have you watched Umbrella Academy on Netflix? The new Quantum Leap is good too. There’s also an old show on CW called Forever about a doctor who can’t die- his adopted son is played by Judd Hirsh (sp?)
My favorite nap-to shows are on HGTV especially anything with the Property Brothers – soothing voices

Campy one or two season shows that should have continued, but got canceled:
1. The imperfects- if you liked extraordinary and misfits, give it a go. Only one season, but worth watching.
2. New legends of monkey king- campy fun (2 seasons)
3. Mr. Midnight (so campy/teenage angsty it’s fun- set in Singapore). Only one season

Have you watched Magnificent Century about Hurrem Sultana and Sulymaîn the Magnificent. Great Turkish costume drama! Many mâtant episodes. There is love! Betrayal! Rivalry! Fratricide! harem intrigue! stolen Spanish princesses! Mother in law drama! Sword fights! 15th century conquests !! I know you like the Korean costume dramas. You would like this too! And there are sequels !

I’ve been wondering whether to watch only murders and extraordinary and you’ve sold them to me.
Ncuti Gatwa is a brilliant Doctor Who this series.
Other than that all I have watched recently is Bridgerton and Great British Sewing Bee (Bake off but sewing)

My vote goes to Lockwood & Co for a spooky whodunnit in a different world. British show with teenage protagonists but with well written script, pulled off with decent acting and special effects. Based on the novels by Jonathan Stroud, sadly was cancelled only after 1 season but I loved it.
For Chinese dramas, I cannot recommend The Double enough. It’s a revenge drama with smart leads, great pacing and strong acting from the entire cast. The Princess Royal was decent too; both are on Netflix (at least they were in my region).

I haven’t watched TV much for the last couple of years, as I read (so few years, so many books). Though, if I’m stuck, something like Great British Bake Off or International Househunters cheers me up. I love looking at food and other peoples houses. Hope you are both feeling better.

It’s been all K and C dramas for me this summer. “Extra-ordinary you” is fun and meta. I don’t know if they can maintain for the full 40 episodes, but I’m loving it 10 in. Synopsis is Girl discovers she’s not only living inside a comic book world, she’s a supporting character. Hijinx ensue.
“My Lovely Liar” is a nicely digestible 15 eps. Fmc is born with the ability to sense lies (very Nevada) Mmc is a tortured songwriter with a hidden past.

A costume drama show was released in 2022 without much fanfare called Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty — it has mostly little known casts except perhaps the lead actor (Yang Xiwen — Legend of Condor Heroes 2017), but because it was detective stories set in Tang Dynasty, I decided to watch it and didn’t come out disappointed. You could tell everybody involved with this show really committed to the show and made the most they could with the small budget they had. It later became the little-show-that-could sleeper hit and second season was greenlit. Personally, the Lotus Casebook (2023) impressed me more with its perfect blend of the chemistry among the leads, the fight scenes, and its true wuxia tradition story.
2 years passed and Strange Tales II is here and it defies all expectations; it’s a sequel that’s excel beyond its previous season. Everybody was betting on Joy of Life 2, but IMO it’s this second season that’s truly brought the waiting audiences satisfaction. The pacing is tight now and the confusing storytelling is gone. More actions are added. For expert review on this series, please check out what AvenueX has to say on YouTube.

Otherwise it’s re-watching Dresden Files (one and done); Haven, Lost Girl, Grimm, Sanctuary, Lucifer or American Gods if I want to stay a while (more than one season huzzah).

On Netflix – Miss Night and Day – opened it out of curiosity after a snippet and the family and I are now 6 episodes in, wanting to know how it ends…
It’s 16 episodes and Korean (which isn’t for everything as it can be a bit tropey) but it’s interesting and quirky and the lead actress is fabulous as acting as a younger woman in an older woman’s body. Hopefully the quality maintains until the end.

Problem here. I tried Night Agent.
It’s very generic and I couldn’t remember the main casts names, a very bad sign.
What I really enjoyed is „The double“ cdrama, high octane revenge in ancient setting – many episodes, but a lot going on. The worst part was school (yes, dreadful) suddenly in the first half which was imo just a way to widen the’s fl pool of friends and enemies because she was very secluded before. All in all, really good.
On Viki. It’s on Netflix too. But I’m in a slump as well… .

We also have this problem. We end up watching bbc mysteries from ages ago to fill in the gaps.

I generally watch old shows and the ones I like repeatedly. Currently rewatching Chuck. I’ll recommend a couple more obscure shows. One is Wonderfalls which is about a snarky, overeducated gift shop clerk who suddenly experiences inanimate objects talking to her. It’s basically a screwball romantic comedy in 13 episodes. The other is The Inside which is about a rookie FBI profiler working in a violent crimes unit that tries to catch serial killers. It’s got a Silence of the Lambs vibe. It’s also only 13 episodes. Unfortunately, you can only see either show in low quality rips on YouTube. But they’re both awesome shows that I highly recommend…
