Any plans for the merch shop reopening at Sanctuary release time? – M in the comments

This is a tentative yes: when the Sanctuary novella is published this summer we will likely be able to celebrate with official merch.

I say tentative, because releases are busy times and House Andrews have to fully recover to be up for all of it. Things are progressing well after the unexpected surgery last week (thank you to everyone for all your well wishes), so we’re optimistic and making arrangements.

To this end: because we’ll need to get the designs commissioned and all our kolovershi in a row, please let me know below what merch you would like – it will be Roman’s release so there will be a focus on his quotes and items, but if there’s anything else from the other books, put it in the comments too.

We may have a poll voting on your suggestions, because you guys always come up with so many hilarious options. “Wanna come back to my place and pet my nechists?” probably kills on Volhv Tinder hehe. A small disclaimer here, however: as much as we love Roman’s Eeyore nature and calling him a “Care Bear in the streets/ Dark priests in the sheets”, some of those classically-known images are copyrighted, so we won’t be able to make merch with them. I’m sure you’ll come up with suitable alternatives.

Some options I’ve got from your serial comments (with cross-reference whilst the chapters are up):

Can’t wait to read your merch ideas! And if you’re in the US, Canada or Mexico and have front row seats today to Cherny giving Belobog a wedgie, remember what we always say in Nav: it’s not just about watching the eclipse, it’s about embracing the darkness. Wink wink.

  2. I am beloved by evil things and the honeycomb rescue dog, please. But only if you are feeling up to it. Don’t exhaust yourself. While I like your merchandise, I live your books. I don’t want you to waste book writing energy on merch. Is that awful and self serving?

  6. I’m glad that Ilona is starting to recover. hopefully more broths of various descriptions, crackers and ready will help bring back all of the energies.

  15. Good vinyl stickers/decals can be waterproof (lots of my students decorate their Stanley cups and whatnot with them) and are great for travel mugs and laptops and bumpers…

    The custom iron-on patch is a brilliant idea! I have way too many tshirts and tote bags but would love to add a BDH design to them. Plus it’s more eco-friendly (happy Earth Day everyone)!

  26. I might be in the minority here, but I will buy all the hand towels with quotes (cool art and images aren’t necessary.)

    I use the hell of out hand towels in my home. This is an home decor item that will be useful and well loved.

    I will pre-order if that helps you decide.

  30. I’m so glad you are feeling better. Gall bladder surgeries are so much.. NOT fun.. BTDT got the T-shirt.. etc. ad nauseum. Now is the walk and walk and get strength back and learn what you can and can’t eat and get better. I do like the broth and sardines idea. My son came in the other morning, after another one of my normal “I’m a retired RN, and I keep weird hours” all nighters, to find me eating sardines on saltines at 0500 and nearly gagged. He doesn’t like them to start with and could *not* fathom how anyone could eat them for breakfast. I pointed out, that after being up all night, this was, after all, dinner! Get well the soonest!

  31. The original A A Milne line drawings of Eeyore are public domain now. Fair game, though a donation to the New York Public Library where the Pooh artifact collection (including the original stuffies) is kept is always in good taste.

    Just gotta avoid the Disney.

  32. I hope that all continues to be OK with Ilona’s surgery recovery.

    Re. Issues with fading mugs, if more feedback helps, the last time the merch shop (UK) was open I got two of the large mugs – these have been in the dishwasher since then most days and the mug design is still fine.

    There are lots of great merch ideas already suggested. I would also put in a plea for mugs (well…you can never have too many mugs, can you?) with:

    Roman: ‘Within the Void I am serene’ (part of his prayer/meditation when dealing with his mother)

    From ‘Magic Gifts’: ‘How did your day go? It was busy and full of stupid shit that I didn’t want to deal with’. (Kate and Curran talking about work).

  43. Zoological drawings of all Roman’s “pets” with notes on things like behaviour or what to watch out for i.e. massive claws or adorable soulful eyes…

  45. This is a little late but I think it would be wonderful if the drawings of the nechist to either go in the book or be sold as merchandise. I would certainly buy a bag with them on it.

I don’t know if I’m in the minority here (also I’m late to the party), but I love shirts and hoodies that look like an intricate design/ drawing to outsiders but have meaning to the respective fans. This would translate into designs less leaning on whole quotes but more on simple drawings with no text or just up to 3 words. Like the outline of the tree that gets transformed through Nav but no catch phrase for example.
    BDH designs without text, just the pictograms. Or sth many might appreciate is copying free but known styles and adapting it to BDH-content. Like that classic black shirt with names listed: “Kate, Dina, (insert several main characters here ) and Julie.”
    What is also possibly a hit is designing sth to look like a University logo but it’s post-shift Atlanta with the unicorn alley. Or it’s Gertrude hunt. I would go broke. please make me go broke.

    • I tend to go this way as well – having stuff that is not immediately recognizable so that:

      (1) BDH can recognize each other, and/or

      (2) so that others ask about the design on the shirt, and I can proselytize (oooh, spell checker had fun with that) about House Andrews books.

      My “If the skies could dream, they would dream of dragons” t-shirt has prompted multiple inquiries from strangers.

      Along this line of thought, in a nit-picky way, I’d love if the Gertrude Hunt graphic could be tweaked to take out the “Humans must never know”, which makes it clear it’s not a t-shirt for a real b&b. And just have the graphic to prompt inquiry/conversation…

    So excited that you are thinking of opening your merch store again!!
    I would love hooded sweatshirts. I still love the graphic of Cutting Edge monster removal. But the nechists decorating the tree sounds great!

    Would you consider doing some ball caps? Maybe the distressed adjustable kind? I always need one and they would be fun with any of your quotes or art!
