      • That’s a fantastic idea. I now have visions of Ilona receiving box after box of luxurious yarn for her house warming and Gordon scratching his head wondering where in the hell it will end up.

          • Especially when the storage hatch is opened by Kirk, and out comes all the tribbles! Replace Kirk with either Ilona or Gordon, the storage hatch with a closet, and yarn for tribbles and voila! A new authorlord story. ?

  12. You are strong!!! Slay those yarn monsters! Avoid buying the yarn 🙂 There will always be lots of pretty yarn to buy once you move in. Getting close to the holidays – it is something Gordon could buy for you then.

    My father is very hard to buy for – I can’t tell you how many times I had a gift picked out for a special occasion for him and then he goes and buys it for himself just before birthday / Christmas etc. Arggghhh!!

  25. Use up some of your stash of yarn before it gets wrecked by moths or silverfish or spiders. (I had problem finishing a project because two balls of the wool had been attacked and were ‘cut’ in multiple places.)

    My passion is embroidery thread. I’ve had to get a glass topped coffee table to put it all in so I could enjoy the colours together and not have the cats take off with it.

  29. Now, see, you just have to be creative. You’re not buying the yarn to make stuff; you’re buying the yarn the secure the moving boxes. You’re just going to be thrifty afterwards and re-use the yarn to make stuff.

  31. LOL. 3rd option: Looking and enjoying the yarn, while making a list of the ones you will get after the move, aaand only after the move. It will all be worth it. Dream house is found. There will be plenty of time to fill it with more yarn.

  32. You proved in your book, that wool yarn knitted into a sweater even when wet kept your heroine warm and alive. Ergo, your baste yarn knowledge = business expense! So buy the yarn. Plus I just wanted to use the word ergo.

    • In another book a blow torch was almost used on a tangled yarn project. So, it’s all in perspective.

  34. Did you know that there is yarn in the Orkney Islands of Scotland made from the wool of sheep that eat seaweed? It’s natural color is very unique! Not to put temptation in your way or anything . . . .

  35. um, so I listened to my “buy the yarn” friend, and now I have a 55gal tub full of yarn…and still no scarves. Sometimes I’ll open the tub, pull out a skein, rub it on my face and say “you are so soft, i wish you were a scarf”

  36. But the damn yarn. It’ll give you something constructive to do instead of worrying how to pay for the house. Plus, if you make wonderful handcrafted gifts you’ll save money on Christmas presents. And the amount you save on yarn really won’t impact the mortgage. Won’t even make a dent on any of the inspections. Buy the yarn.

    • It’s sad to realize that for, like, a whole social circle, I was always the person they figured would come and bail them out in the middle of the night. (Mind you, their idea of trouble was a patch on the trouble *I* like to get into. So boring. So much is about finding the right compatriots.)

      So as someone else above implied, Elizabeth is the angel on the shoulder and Thea is the devil on the other shoulder. Or as in AndrewC’s example, Elizabeth is the friend paying your bail, and Thea is the one sitting next to you in jail saying, “Damn, that was fun. Let’s do it again!” (I’ve read her books and get her newsletter; I can see Thea saying exactly that!)

  37. There will always be beautiful yarn available to buy. Take care of business first (buying the house), then reward yourself later with the new yarn.

  41. Buy the yarn. You may feel guilty for two seconds, but the happiness the new yarn will bring will last forever. Not to mention the joy of creating something with it. Don’t listen to the posts that Gordon will buy it for you. There will always be beautiful yarn. He can still buy some for you.

  44. Resist, because then even if you buy some of the yarn, you will enjoy it all the more. And be glad you don’t have my sister’s cat, who only likes the expensive yarn, and will dig down to the bottom of the basket to pull it out and play with.

  47. What’s funny is I read all three authors’ works, and those three attitudes/viewpoints right there are definitely reflected in the authorial underpinnings of the different books and series :-D. Some things shine true in your work or your play!

  49. I have to repeat that mantra to myself everytime new books from my favorite authors are released. Needless to say my TBR queue of ebooks is at 100+. Look at it this way, a yarn addiction (or a book addiction) is much better for you than a drug or alcohol addiction.

  52. Ooooh, here’s another reason. You’re buying a new house and you’re going to repaint parts of it, which means you need to buy yarn so you can make cozies (sp?) and other doodads that coordinate with the paint color you’re going with. So you’re pre-decorating the new house. 😛

  53. There’s a knitting meme that says something along the lines of, “If someone tells you you don’t need to buy any more yarn, unfriend them immediately. You don’t need that kind of negativity in your life.” 🙂

  55. Buy the yarn AFTER the move. One less thing to unpack, misplace or forgot what box it was in.
    My husband is the Buy it now friend. I never express interest for anything in front of him. If I dont buy it for myself he will get it. To save us from going broke I stay really quiet.

    Because yarn has to be knit or woven or in general used, it’s a really excellent purchase, containing in and of itself both immediate (yay yarn!!) and delayed (knit/woven/crocheted item!!) gratification. Buy the yarn.

    • Great purchase if you have an immediate need for it. Buy cool yarn now if you have a project; wait until after move to buy cool yard to hoard for “some day”.

  69. To get the yarn or not to get the yarn, that is the question (channeling a little Shakespeare right now).

    Pros of getting yarn now: look at it, pet it, be happy you got it before winter sets in.

    Cons of getting yarn now: moving yarn from one place to another, not using it right away, Gordon possibly running out the back door saying “yarn is a four letter word!”

    Did you know yarn can be a swear word? It was in my family since my mom would buy so much of it she gave it away to a friend.

  70. Hmm, depends on the options. Is there an equal urge to eat chocolate, drink margaritas, and buy expensive chandeliers for the new bathroom? In that case, buying yarn would definitely be the healthier choice. Just sayin’.

  73. As somebody onece said: “With great power comes great responsibility”! Having your own home/inn would give you the great power but responsibility? – That is learned not bought.
    Having said that, just remember that with great responsibility can come great boredom unless you occasionally throw responsibility to the winds and indulge yourself in your cravings!

    I’m sure you will make the right choice in the end. Hey! – You can always knit the wall coverings for that extra room!

  75. We really need both kinds of friends in or lives – the kind sitting in the jail cell with us, and the kind who comes and bails us out – don’t we?!

    If buying the yarn will make you happy & help you distress, then buy it!

    If buying the yarn will make you momentarily happy, then be a source of guilt and added stress later, wait to but it until you close.

    Either way, buy it!!!!! Just depends on when. ?

  78. Well I’d be the “buy the yarn” friend, especially since my thought is if the yarn is on sale for less then $2 then it doesn’t count (in terms of what I’m buying). Which means when I go to my yarn store with a coupon for 20% off everything, I leave with at least 2 large bags of yarn….

    • Umm “a lot.” I crochet blankets for Moffitt’s cancer center and at Christmas for nursing homes, so that accounts for quite a bit of my “sale” yarn. So about 24+ blankets a year (they are only 42″ by 42″ approx). I make dresses for my great niece. I also keep the “ends” and will do a scrap blanket once a year because it takes forever to make the “ball.” (You cut the scrap into 1-2.5 foot pieces and tie them together randomly and make a ball to crochet from. Then you crochet so that all the loose ends are on one side, so you have a fuzzy and a smooth side. Looks awesome and no ends to sew in, which I love).

  80. My daughter “de-stashed” before she moved. She posted a picture of her new room when she got settled. It has a armoir full of yarn. So, even de-stashing doesn’t help a yarn addict. However, it is a “relatively” harmless addiction, compared to some. Buy the yarn. Running your fingers over it and squishing it in your hands is supposedly as de-stressing as petting a cat or dog.

  81. I used to go broke buying books. I could never deny myself. Lucky for me I discovered the library or I’d be eating mac ‘n cheese everyday.

    You have to leave something for your house warming. Your friends will want to celebrate your wonderful new palace just as much as you want to show them your favorite features. (ie The shiny new toaster over the bath,…)
    Buy the house, throw a party, still get the yarn! Win, Win, Win!

  84. Well, to play devil’s advocate and just ridiculously logical. You could potentially be moving soon- and if you do, you will be SO busy you will not have time to knit whatever item you are thinking that expensive yarn will be perfect for. By the time you get unpacked, organized, etc…. you will have a new item you will be hot to make, and have your eye on a different yarn(also probably expensive cause it’s so much nicer than crappy yarn). The confusion and guilt ferrets will chew you up and not allow you to enjoy the new project as much as you want to because the stuff you want to buy now will be sitting there, taunting you. Just let this expensive yarn go…..if you want it after the move, it will still be there. And you will enjoy it even more. That’s my theory, and I’m sticking to it. 🙂

  85. Solution: Buy the yarn after you move into the house, that way you won’y have to pack & unpack it.

  86. Being “responsible” is highly overrated. Buy the yarn NOW…for it may be sold out tomorrow! Besides, it is lightweight so it won’t add much to the move.

  89. In your new house, have 1 room for yarn. Just 1 room. 5henbyou can see it, touch it, FIND it whenever you need a yarn fix. And stash all your new yarn fixes, um, I mean purchses……. ????

  91. I third the comment to buy the yarn after the move. I do not know which is more stressful, buying a home or moving, but I suspect the latter. Minimize the amount of stuff you have to move. Then, when you getting tired packing or unpacking the nth box, you can triumphantly think “At least we don’t have to pack the extra yarn!”

    Then, when the move is mostly complete, you can celebrate by buying yarn.

    Not moving yarn has its advantages, but didn’t you say there were two cool yarn stores close to the new house? You can give yourself treats each time you go to take care of something.

    There is also the option of using Amazon’s handy Universal Wish List button to mark the yarn you would like to have so you can pick it now but get it for Xmas or other gift-giving occasion.

  94. I’m the second kind, I don’t even have to know a person to enable them to buy yarn. I convinced a lady to buy a fleece she was waffling on at the recent fiber festival.

  95. If you use the yarn for research purposes – Kate’s new hobby while pregnant. After all, Conlan will need a baby blanket – the yarn becomes a tax deduction.

  97. Buy yarn after the move so you know just how much you need to fill up all the closets, nooks and cranies.

    In the mean time look at yarn porn to get your fix.

  99. My mental author image of Thea Harrison from now until the end of time will be a chibi TH with little devil horns and bat wings fluttering over a cartoon shoulder. I will not be able to consume anymore of her fabulous works without laughing hysterically whenever I see her author photo. Definitely having a laugh over this one!
