Tapas is an app that can be viewed on your smart phone, tablet, or computer. Tapas offers online comics and uses its own currency, ink, which functions like digital tokens that you purchase. You then pay for the comics with ink. You can also earn ink by looking at advertisements, etc. Tapas is also now a home of Clean Sweep Comic.
Some of you asked for recommendations on what to read on Tapas. My reading tastes are eclectic, so your mileage may vary.
Before we begin, let’s talk about 2 key concepts, which are very common in Asian-inspired comics.
Isekai – “other world” in Japanese and it’s a genre of fantasy and science fiction where the character is transported to another world. Never Ending Story is an isekai story. The character enters another world in some capacity and their actions affect it.
Transmigration – soul travelling, a genre of fantasy and science fiction where the character’s soul is transported into another body. A character may go back in time to when they were younger and find themselves back into their younger body – temporal transmigration. A character might find themselves in the body of a different person – physical transmigration. A character might find themselves in the body of a person from a different world – isekai transmigration.
Action: The World is a Video Game
Here Solo Leveling reigns supreme. Nothing is better.
The world has turned into a video game. Portals have opened all over the place leading to “dungeons,” pocket dimensions filled with monsters. Simultaneously, some people developed magical abilities. These hunters enter the dungeons to plunder the resources and to eliminate the monsters, because unless the dungeon boss is disposed off in a certain time frame, the dungeon will break, releasing the monsters onto the city streets and casualties will be catastrophic.
The hunters are graded based on their abilities. This is the story of a hunter named Sung Jinwoo, Rank E. He is the lowest ranked hunter in the world.
This is also the story of how he becomes the most powerful hunter in the world.

This is a must read for any action fan. It is an incredible work.
Level Up with the Gods
A massive tower appeared in the world, each level as big as a small state. Within the tower chosen warriors battle through each level, trying to perfect their skills. It is a place where inner gods and heroes roam: Zeus, Hercules, Monkey God, Asura, Merlin, Vishnu…Among them Yuwon Kim, a talented fighter. The inner gods reach the top of the tower and encounter the Outer Gods, ancient forces beyond their imagining. They lose the battle, the war, and everything, and Yuwon Kim is sent back through time by Kronos into his younger body. He must climb the tower again, and this time he cannot make any mistakes.
My Master is a Backseat Gamer
Same set up, the world is a video game, and… an ancient incredibly powerful martial arts master from another world ends up being turned into a spirit, sucked into this world, and gets attached to Hyunsoo, who is a very small fry in this very big fighter ocean. So he gets saddled with this very opinionated ghost who is invisible to everyone but him and who decides to teach him martial arts. Hilarity ensues.
Also Kill the Hero is great.

I Shall Master This Family
This is slow burn, because the story starts when they are children. It’s a world of nobles, kings, and great merchant families. A little bit of Italy, a bit of the intrigue of Madrid Court. Our young heroine is the only child of the youngest of three sons that belong to an enormously powerful family. Her mother was a servant and she is treated badly by her uncles and cousins despite her talents. Her father dies of illness, and although she develops a relationship with her grandfather, his health also declines. She lives long enough to see her uncles bring the powerful family of Lombardi to a complete ruin.
She is reborn in the body of her much younger self and is determined to not let it happen again. This is an adorable comic. Impossibly adorable heroine, lots of competence fun, and of course, there is a prince…
I’m the Tyrant’s Secretary
Have you seen What’s Eating Secretary Kim? Yep, this is just like that. Except he is a tyrant, she is a noble lady, and she keeps trying to keep him from killing people.
Romance: Sword and Gown

Okay, before we get into it, unexpectedly sexy art in this one.
Lady Rosentine Arzen is born with the ability to see and communicate with ghosts, which is an offense punishable by death. She learns of a plot to murder the members of the Imperial family and to keep her family safe, she disguises herself as a servant and enters the employ of Prince Charteris. Who continues to be remarkably handsome for the entirety of the comic I have read so far. He has an older brother. He is also handsome.
This one is a bit darker in art and in tone.
I wasn’t the Cinderella
Terryl is a pretty young woman who is clever and strong-willed, but she is of low birth. Despite that, she ended up in a relationship with a Jemon Debrik, a noble, son of a Marquis. She endures a lot of humiliation and rumors. The entire family treats her like dirt except for Cesio, Jemon’s older brother. Cesio is in a wheelchair. He can’t talk. He is a bastard, as in born out of wedlock, but he is kind.
Jemon gets engaged to a princess and dumps our girl like a hot potato. Enraged and hurt, Terryl tries to pick up the pieces of her life, but the joke is on her ex-boyfriend. Turns out she is a daughter of a duke. From the North! We all know how those Northern Dukes are like, with the furs and swords and monster hunting. Winter is coming, and her name is Terryl.
Other titles int he same vein: The Villainess is a Marionette (pretty but meanders), Roxana (seriously screwed up dark romance), The Falcon Princess (she is a falcon, literally,) How to Hide the Emperor’s Child (legit, by the book secret baby.)
Romance: Cozy
50 tea recipes from the Duchess
Not a personal favorite, but this is very popular. I may have to try it again.
Duchess Chloe Battenberg is a doormat. Her husband treats her poorly, her servants bully her, the society things she is spineless. And then an office worker from our world transmigrates into her body and she is done taking everyone’s crap. Also she likes tea. A lot. Tea can be a weapon.
The Millionaire Divorcee
Duchess Alicia was married to a duke. He cheated. She divorced him. She received a hefty financial settlement. She opens a jewelry shop. Don’t call her the ex-Duchess. Call her CEO.
Cute, sweet, low angst. Could’ve been filed under business as well, but it’s more of a cozy.
Not Sew Wicked Stepmom
Oh dear God. Okay, so this is a really good retelling of the Snow White. Our heroine used to be a clothes designer until she woke up in the body what is very clearly Snow White’s stepmother. Except that Snow White is named Princess Blanche and our heroine is named Abigail. Abigail’s husband hates her and refuses to have marital relations, everyone is scared of her, and when she smiles, she looks like a serial killer.
But Abigail is a very kind person who adores her new stepdaughter. She might not be a great wife, but poor Blanche doesn’t deserve to be treated badly. She is going to fix things. And gowns. The corsets have to go.
It is sweet and adorable. And yes, there is a living mirror.
I was going to give you martial arts stuff but I am too tired. This should get you started.

You can find many webcomics digitally and many are on the artist’s dedicated website or a shared website. I follow several. Often it’s possible to buy an annual collection of their work in paper form. Some of these books can be found on Amazon, but they are often a bit cheaper from the artist directly.
Someone below mentioned that they are collecting the paper copies of their favorite Tapas webcomic as it becomes available, so that’s apparently a possible option for Tapas, too.

I downloaded it yesterday and calmly mentioned to my husband that hey Solo leveling is on here.
He was so excited, his eyes lit up and he was said now I have no excuse not to read it. He had been reading the light novels for a while. And has been talking my ear off about it ????. I cant complain though, because he listens to me about all IA books and anything I generally fan girl about.
I plan to start it this weekend.
Does it get more interesting story wise? I always had the impression that it was mostly popular for its art but I only read the beginning
I have read the manhwa, and my husband the light novel. It is sooo good. Ilona has mentioned it before as a true gaining power. You watch Sung-jin Woo grow and gain power while remaining an honest and dedicated individual.
It’s kinda eh imo. The MC gains a substantial amount of his power off screen and within 160ish chapters where I stopped reading he was essentially the most powerful being on earth. Of course things get harder (as they do) but I had kinda checked out because I felt way too rushed through the power gain.
Now, please understand that I’ve been reading way too much on Royal Road where it’s legitimate criticism that most of those authors could get an editor and cut down by 30-50% and still have an excellent (or better) story. But I like reading about the grind and somehow I just stopped enjoying Solo Leveling, it was good enough though and I’d advise people listen to the published author who knows what she is talking about (Ilona) when they take book recs :p

Solo Leveling was so, so good! I am buying all of the paper versions as they come out to own the complete series, but it’s in my top three web comics so far, right up there with Lore Olympus and My Dear Cold Blooded King (both on Webtoons, not Tapas).
I’m so thrilled for you guys about the Innkeeper webtoon! I love webtoons. It’e literally been my dream to convert my space pirates series to a webtoon at some point. I even talked to a really amazing artist, but he explained some of the inner workings behind the scenes, and SF is a very hard sell for webcomics. Fantasy Romance and power leveling (Solo Leveling) are the hottest genres and pretty much the only ones most serious companies or artists will take a risk on, since producing the art is such an intense time investment.
Omg, i already love all of the titles in here, I became OBSESSED with webcomics during the pandemic, some of my favorites are also “villainess in love” and ”Flirting with the villains dad” for romance and “gourmet gaming”is so fun to read if you’re into a little bit more of action.
I love love love Not Sew Wicked stepmother! All my ink goes to it, and to “Beware the villainess”: the the heroine is great and hilarious!

As a long-time avid reader of Asian stories (manga, manhwa, webnovels, etc.), it is amazing and unreal for me to see my western book fandom interacting with my webcomics fandom!!! ???????????????????? This is so amazing. My fav author (since Magic Burns KD#2) is posting about my new joy, asian comics, novels and dramas! I’m the only one in my family who enjoys these translated stories, so I always felt it was a super niche field.
Now, even my local library has bought several copies of Solo Leveling but each webcomic paper volume only has 3-4 chapters, so reading it online really is the way to go).
Thanks for talking about manhwas (korean comics), which are a huge, enticing field of reading I’d only discovered a few years ago.
I prefer my e-reader for novels, but the korean comics are so well optimized for colourful, online reading, that I’m now reading translated korean comics on my cellphone too. The colours and details (like clothing, settings, and action) are really well drawn, and there are many fantasy/sci fi stories with female leads.
Even if a cover looks cheesy at first, to my surprise I find that the story will have magic or fantasy elements. For example, “My Husband Hides His Beauty” is about fortresses, demons, monster-hunting, and aristocracy. “The Youngest Princess” is about an Archmage reborn into a cold royal family. “The Monster Duchess and Contract Princess” is about a reborn girl with immense powers of darkness who needs to escape her evil family. “My Family is Obsessed With Me” is about a female warrior who saved the world and killed a demon lord, but awakens as an abused orphan. So many good stories waiting to be discovered!

I really liked Roxana and the villainess is a marionette because I does something I haven’t really seen in western literature that I can find. That moral gray almost political strategist strong female lead who takes good care of her subordinates. There’s a certain bluntness about the harsh reality that’s refreshing and the main character doesn’t have crippling guilt or self esteem issues that causes cringy decision making. There’s a lot of warrior women in fiction now but what about women who don’t lead with their fists. And are not naive or overly kind. I really wish there were more stories like this. I just want to enjoy some badass women who use their mind as their sword. Because historically, the awesome women with political power or Economic power it what not, knew that this was a man’s world and used that to their advantage out of necessity. the ones we have shed light on are glorified as kind and justice driven with either “awe” inspiring innocence or stubborn do the same thing until I have to beat you over the head with it. Like where’s the subtlety? Being a hero is so limiting to a character that it overshadows them. Not to say I like reading about a corrupt person but I’m sick of culture’s obsession with heroes and justice. Like what about just people with goals? Why must we paint everything in this good or bad color? Anyway that’s cool your on tapas! I’ll check it out!

Solo Leveling is one of my top 5 “alternate earth” manhwas. Except the ending. (No spoilers here but I hate/am very disappointed when stories do THAT for the ending).

You might want to check out the translated novel ending/epilogues of Solo Leveling/I Alone Level Up. A lot more is explained in the novel ending than the comic ending.
Not to ask too crass a question, but can someone tell me what the cost would be for an entire book? I understand the whole “Ink” thing. But how much Ink would I be spending for one book? And can I subscribe and pay for an entire book at once? So that I can access new chapters as they come up?

Sometimes they will be free, sometimes they will be on offer or linked to promotions etc so it’s hard to estimate a total price at the end of the year.

In my experience, if you turn on the auto-pay/unlock for when you click the next episode, it costs around 300 ink per episode. (sometimes more or less depending on the title).
For Solo Leveling, there are 181 episodes and the story appears to be completed.
For 50 Tea Recipes from the Duchess, the main story was complete at 129 episodes, and there have been a few new episodes published as a sort of “bonus story.”
For Not Sew Wicked Stepmom, the story is still ongoing, and there are 54 episodes so far.
Ongoing stories usually add one or two episodes a week, and occasionally take breaks between seasons just like TV shows.
The ink shop has sales several times a year, and I’ve made a fair amount of ink by playing phone games, sometimes by making purchases within the game but often just by playing. I only do those on my phone, since the one time I tried it on my tablet the game wasn’t supported and I lost out on the opportunity to play it for ink.

Ooh, some new to me ones to try. The tea heroine is a Mary Sue. Also it’s really about tea. So much tea.
I am also enjoying the Monstrous Duke’s Adopted Daughter (fantasy). The child M/C has shadow magic, her family tries to murder her for it, she gets the duke (a woman) to adopt her. The duke has a husband who is totally excited to have a daughter and two sons who aren’t sure about a new sister but come around. Love the found family element.
I am also enjoying Becoming the Dark Hero’s Daughter. On the romance side, Positively Yours is sweet.
Oh, okay. So, I already have like 15 books on my e-reader that I want to read. Now here comes Mod R with a bunch of other stuff that I really like the sound of. (I know, first world problem.)

Revolutionary Princess Eve starts off with a heart-wrenching BANG. Great plot.

Villains are Destined to Die has beautiful artwork too.
Secret Lady is AMAZING. I have hot flashes anytime the 2nd prince comes on (or any other male figure, honestly). Plot is good.

In the action genre right now I’m addited to Second Life Ranker, Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint and The World after the end but I’m not sure you can find then in tapas.

Many webtoons are based on Korean novels, which I have been devouring for the past year. A popular genre is “rofan” which comes of romance + fantasy. It isn’t always easy to get hold of these books, but Google Play’s bookstore has some Korean novels and offers direct translations inside their online reader.
So if you read a Korean novel at Google Play’s site and click on the Translate button, you can read an English translation courtesy of Google Translate. The translation quality is very hit and miss; but sometimes it can be worth the effort, especially if you’ve been following the webtoon adaptation of a certain novel and are desperate for spoilers.
I’m also a fan of Japanese light novels, and my impression is that Korean and Japanese romantic novels share many similar tropes such as “the protagonist died in the real world and found themselves reincarnated into a book/game”. Some Korean novels also include interior manga-style illustrations similar to Japanese light novels.
What seems to be unique to Korean novels is that many romantic novels are published in two versions: one all-ages version and one “R19” version (readers must be above 19 years old to purchase) with adult scenes. So you can choose whether to read a novel with or without adult scenes. It can however be a bit annoying when the R19 version is only released several months later, which means some readers end up buying the novel twice.
Another thing I’ve only seen with Korean novels is that the synopses often contain hashtags describing the story so that readers will know whether it’s going to be up their alley on not. Examples:
#fantasy #royalty #contract-marriage
#regret (someone ends up deeply regretting their past actions)
#virgin (the heroine or hero is a virgin)
#obsessive-man (the male lead is the obsessive type)
#talented-woman (a talented heroine)
#reverse-harem (#harem refers to a man with multiple female lovers, so a reverse harem means the heroine has multiple male love interests).
Korean romantic novels are often first serialized on platforms such as Ridibooks (major online bookstore) before being released in volume format. So readers pay a small fee such as 100 KRW to read every installment. The installments are not full chapters; they are maybe 3 pages of text. Looking at a random series as an example, the complete volume contained 34 serialized installments.
A full volume are often as cheap as 3000 KRW (around $2). So I sometimes wonder if authors can really make a living on that, or if perhaps the serials contribute enough to compensate for the low prices. And I hope these webtoons also add some extra income for the authors.

I like Tapas. My current reads are The Villain Duke’s Precious One –
A very cute scene is Main Villain as a cute little boy giving his baby sister (our lead) a jingly toy, a stick with a little teddy bear head. He tells her if an assassin comes for her, to shake her jingly toy right under their chin. Shake it hard! There’s a sharp blade that pops out of the teddy bear’s head.
The first three chapters of most of the stories on this site are free. Some have more than three chapters. But after that you pay per each new chapter. The chapters usually come out once a week.
Something extremely wholesome and satisfying is Farmer of Spirits – Just read the introduction chapters. So fun and charming. I couldn’t describe it adequately. But main character went off to become a super human adventurer. It didn’t work out. He returns to family farm to be a farmer. He finds a special plant and cultivates it and it blooms into a little girl. It turns out his special power is farming, and the little girl is a special kind of spirit. It’s super adorable as he adopts the spirit as his daughter.
I recommend these as super fun reads with great artwork.
One webtoon that is not mentioned here and that I highly recommend « the villainess lives again » or « the villainess lives twice ». This one is such a gem.
It is a regression story where the MC gets back in time. It is also redemption story because the MC was really a true villainess. She committed unspeakable acts in her first life and was betrayed by her own brother who she helped to became emperor.
In her second life, she decided to switch allegiance to another contender to the throne with more competences for the role of emperor (and also a morally less corrupt)
There is a lot of political scheme, some action, romance but also psychological.
Trigger warning: physical abuse and some mention of eating disorder
The heroine is such a schemer, she is highly intelligent and develops long lasting scheme. On the other hand, she does not value herself (due to her abusive upbringing) and see herself as a commodity, and the story is all about how she makes peace with the regret of her first life and how she builds a relationship with the male lead.
The art is very good not as gorgeous as some but good quality nonetheless.
I love love it. You can also read the Webnovel which brings more details on motivations and inner thoughts.

One of my favorites is “A Wicked Tale of Cinderella’s Stepmom” – similar to “Not Sew Wicked Stepmom” except with Cinderella, and the person who takes over her stepmom’s life is determined to take good care of all three of her daughters. 🙂

I can’t enjoy graphic novels because I’m weirdly unable to follow a story via illustrations. I’ve tried it a bunch of times, and I find myself just reading the words and not paying much attention to the art. If I force myself to carefully look at the pictures, my mind starts wandering and I lose interest. ????
I am not familiar with this style of comic, but it looks interesting and I am giving it a try. I have a quick question I am hoping someone can answer or point me in the direction of a reference site. Why are adult characters sometimes drawn as younger versions for a few frames? I can’t quite figure out the emotion it is trying to convey (i.e., when Sean first enters the story Dina and her neighbor are drawn younger).
It’s called chibi style. It’s used when something either cute or comedic happening in the story.
