First bit of happy: against all odds, Subterranean Press has softened its policy before the might of the Horde and is republishing the Innkeeper Chronicles, Volume One.
UPDATE: This has SOLD OUT now, in less than 24 hours!
This is not something that usually happens, once the stock is exhausted the books are never reissued. But it is something that happens to us. Because Horde power, that’s why!

Subterranean’s reissue is the omnibus of the first 3 novels in the Innkeeper Chronicles series (so Clean Sweep, Sweep in Peace and One Fell Sweep) and it’s a BIG boy.
Over 760 pages of hardback goodness, signed by Ilona and Gordon, with a full colour wrap-around dust jacket, plus the familiar and beloved illustrations by Doris Mantair in both full-colour and black& white inside. The books are already with the printers and should ship out in a couple of months if all goes well.
Secondly, Ilona and Gordon hosted Jessie Mihalik yesterday to celebrate the release of her new romantasy, Silver & Blood, which will drop on Tuesday and is available from all major retailers, in epub, paperback and audio format (and gorgina hardback in the UK. Honestly, we’ve been rocking it lately over here with the pretty editions, yay us.)
We spited the cold and talked about the price of magic, the author–reader contract, what’s new in the Hidden Legacy world and most of all about Jessie’s new Avon-published duology, which is a Beauty and the Beast retelling with a smitten male protagonist, immersive world, and all the hot and dark twists for us to discover!

I’m re-reading Hidden Legacy while the snow is falling! No better way to spend a snowy Sunday (and Monday, and Tuesday and Wednesday…).
I love Innkeeper Chronicles! When will the book with Maud’s & Arland’s wedding be coming out? Or will there be another story before that?
It is likely there will be 2 final Innkeeper series books, one indeed featuring Maud’s wedding. The timeline of the release is not yet official, and the manuscript is not yet in the works.
All efforts are currently on contractual work and small self-published bits to keep is fed 🙂

Authors do not control their foreign editions and translations. If you let a French publishing house know you want to read the books in your own language, and they agree, Ilona Andrews are only too happy to sell foreign rights, they want the books as accessible as possible.

Because we LOVE (maybe, we hate too, sometimes) these authors, in France. Even if they spoil the other books (it’s hard to measure up when you come after Ilona Andrews).

I have beta-read many books, so I’m familiar with the problem, but I’ve never beta’d for HA so that doesn’t explain it in this case. Let’s go with “sneaky snippet” as that makes it sound like my brain is actually functioning. 🤣

Good morning HA, ModR and BDH from South Africa
As I wait for 7AM (my time) to see whether Beast Business will arrive on time or whether the weather and Texas power companies are going to force me to w*it for it, I thought I might share with you (since misery does so love company) the fun times we had here in my Pretoria suburb of East Lynne from about 23 December to after 5 January.
The substation that services this suburb caught fire and was entirely destroyed (not sure whether due to arson or incompetence). It had to be completely rebuilt, with new hardware brought in and brought online. And while the electricity was out, theft rose (since no electricity = less security), from houses, but also of electricity infrastructure. So, some people had to wait longer while their overland or subterranean cables were replaced…
And one section was without electricity AND water since, while the city was digging to repair an electric cable, they hit a water line.
So know that I know your frustration, HA and Texas, for all that we are in the midst of summer here, and you are really worse off than we were.
I did wonder what options people who live in areas with snow can implement as backup… Some people here have solar+batteries, while others use generators… But what options do you guys have?
Just hunker down, stay warm and remind yourself that better days are on the horizon!

Generators furled with petrol seem to be the go-to method from what I understand but I will ask 🙂
Oh my gosh, Lynda, you sound like me when Texas had the grid meltdown of 2021. I was saying a lot of words when that happened that really can’t be repeated on the blog. Mod R would have something to say to me if I did. 😉
I can only speak for myself when answering your questions. I have battery backup since I live in an apartment. I also have solar panels for when/if I have to charge the battery up. I know people also use propane fueled generators to keep their electricity on. Some may have fireplaces.

We have had a generator for emergency use since hurricane Hugo come through decades ago. We were without power for approximately two weeks with three young children.
Lesson learned!
Mod R, You are the best! You did a great job moderating the discussion between House Andrews and Jessie. I assume there was so little discussion about the Augustine book because there will be opportunity for discussion in the next zoom call. As a BDH member who lives in Australia, getting up in the middle of the night to join a zoom call isn’t always practical so I appreciate your loading the discussion onto utube so promptly.

Daughter is still stuck in Dallas. She was there for a trade show but most of the vendors bailed on Friday. She couldn’t do much be much because she didn’t have warm enough clothes or proper shoes. Mostly sitting in hotel watching movies waiting for a flight that doesnt get canceled. Hopefully she gets home today.

At one point, when you were talking about character development, it reminded me of another author explaining that they had to kill off a side character because it had developed a mind of its own and kept inserting itself, even when it wasn’t needed, into each new book in the series (like a cat when you are trying to have a serious virtual meeting)
Has HA ever had a character like that?

Well, this blog posting is tagged with “Maggie” so while this comment a bit off topic from most of the posting, just letting folks know that the Free Preview for This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me has been released. I was a bit hesitant to read it as I don’t usually like reading a couple of chapters and then having to w**t for the rest of the book, but in this case it is a full 8 chapters and I believe contains the entire “Part 1” of the book. It has a full story arc and is well worth reading!
