Hi- I had to look up Wikipedia for this one, but it turns out it began the same holiday as the British Armistice day I know, so I offer the traditional hope that may we all know world peace in our generation. (I now live in a country where today is more likely to be celebrated as Martinmas, after St Martin the practically charitable soldier, so happy Martinstag for anyone else from this part of the world.)

I wish to say thank you to all who have fought and still fight for our freedom. I am am very surprised at the lack of coverage in the US for this very special anniversary. I am on holiday here in Florida and have asked about where there are services for the public to attend in this area and have meet with blank looks and got told nothing was happening in this area. I can’t believe that’s true but in any case we observed the two minutes silence. Not all people in the UK observed or believed in observing it so please do not think that we are pointing fingers at our friends in the US , we were just surprised as most villages, towns and cities in the UK had services of some kind , but as I said not all agreed and not nearly enough people attended them. May God bless all those that have served and mare serving our country’s

Many towns in the U.S. had parades and services yesterday because today is Sunday.

Some had them Friday as well. It was the only way my father could ride in the parade as he was heading on vacation early Sat. morning.

Fort Worth had a huge parade yesterday. Dallas was going to have one tomorrow but had to cancel due to possible bad weather. One thing I’ve learned living in Fort Worth is that all military is honored no matter what day it is.
The US has a federal observed Veteran’s Day tomorrow even though today is the actual day.

It all depends on location. I lived in Ft Myers and Lehigh Acres, and the day is honored. It’s a big deal in Texas which I appreciate. My grandfathers, uncles and cousins all served, and I honor all who have served and are serving to keep us safe.

The husband says your welcome and thank you too Gordon as well. Hope you guys are enjoying the weekend. It’s also my youngest birthday, he turned 5 today. Ha! Those boots….left a pair sitting in camp over there. Granted I was Air Force, so I didn’t need’em so bad but gotta say I definately had boot envy for the Army boots. Those Army guys, they hung pretty tough, though, keeping the peace by day and occasionally getting mortared at night. And then they kept getting extended cuz at 1st no one could decide how long we all were gonna be in Iraq. So THAT was a real morale killer — everytime they said, oh wait we didn’t mean Oct, we meant Nov, no wait Dec, well all right probly not til next yr. By comparison I only got extended once, which did not suck nearly so hard. Yeah we liked to give’em crap, but gotta give credit where its due–those soldiers sucked it up & soldiered on, my hat’s off (still) to 4 ID and the 173rd.

Sometimes when you are lost for words the only thing to do is write.
NOT MAKING IT They walked, fell and crawled in mud So far from home even the sky was alien There were times they crawled over the bloody Shells of their friends Sharing whatever was left with those still living Young men, strong men, men who had everything to live for Their lives torn away for what they believed was a greater good Leaving behind the mothers who had stayed awake at night when they were sick Held their hands as they took their first steps Waited at the school gates Now waiting for news Hoping beyond hope they would make it. The cemeteries in France are full of those who didn’t make it Often didn’t make it to their coming of age even Didn’t make it home – to mothers. sisters, sweethearts. And the leader of the ‘free world’ couldn’t make it either Couldn’t get to the cemetery because of the rain Not the gunfire, not even any mud, just the rain The man the people are supposed to look up to Looked away Looked at the rain Stayed away.

Their lives torn away for what they believed was a greater good
