We’ve received so many requests and comments regarding the current project that I am going to take pity on poor Mod R and announce what it is, since we are almost done.
We are working on another world fantasy with prominent romantic elements. It’s an isekai, also known as a portal fantasy. Not sure if it qualifies as a romantasy, but it is pretty close, if you like your romantasy with dark magic and a dash of serial killer. (The serial killer is not the romantic interest.)
This book is a love letter to fandom passion. If you ever wondered about the random details of the world you read about and thought a little too hard about the characters, this will speak to you. It’s less LOTR and more Game of Thrones. It’s gritty and dark, but also funny and absurd in places.
This is how the protagonist describes the genre:
There was something about blades and magic that did it for me. Deadly swordsmen with sleek weapons, thieves prowling through the night cities, dark magicians, ruthless nobles, I loved it all.
This is exactly what it says above. Because it’s an isekai, things are really over the top. This book is weird and a departure from out previous work. So please don’t get excited, it’s not Kate 2.0 or Hidden Legacy 2.0. It’s odd.
Tags: other world, found family, grand betrayal, slow burn, mastermind.
[Edit Mod R: Tags are badass magic wielders, move over Alphaholes, will the dress take the dye, stabbing, tea drinking, cute critters, princes in disguise! Ok, ok, I’ll shut up and let Ilona finish.]
It is tentatively titled Maggie, which will certainly change, and consists of three parts titled Bag of Money, Heart of a Knight, and In the Name of the Father. The draft is currently at 110K and will top out at 120. We expect to finish in 2 weeks.
If you are a reader, you have to wait a bit until we decide what to do with it. If you are an editor, we are represented by Nancy Yost of NYLA. Unfortunately, we cannot respond to direct requests. Everything must go through our agent.
We will announce what happens to this book as soon as it does. You will know when we will know.
What’s next, what’s next?
I’m going to kick myself for this. Iron and Magic 2 is next.
Please do not bug Gordon and me about it. Please don’t ask if its done two weeks after we start. I already low-key dread writing it because it will be like writing under a microscope, so please don’t make it worse or we will have to go into internet blackout to get it done and that means no extras for the blog.
We’d love to have some extras for you. Holidays are coming up. Hehehe.
Sue says
Absolutely love the snippets of Maggie… will wait as long as necessary to read it.
I will look forward to more Iron and Magic…I have re-read it many times. But I can wait, maybe not patiently, but I would rather a long wait than a stressed writer!
Jessi says
Super excited about both these! Keep the wonderful worlds coming!

Have just finished all of the Kate Daniel’s audio books, after reading them all years ago, and most recently Iron and Magic. Your books are like a drug, a really good drug; my brain craves more after I have finished one! SO EXCITED to see there will be a book #2 for Hugh & Elara!
You two are Amazing-have read all your books and can’t get enough! Can’t really imagine how hard it must be to do what you do, but here’s one reader, who is so, so glad that you do. THANK YOU!!

I can’t wait to visit your new world with Maggie. Different is just different, I’m sure it will be epic. Especially because of how compelled you were to write it. It seems like one of those stories that are just meant to be told. Also I promise if anyone pressures you for release dates, or progress on the next Hugh book, it won’t be me. I will eagerly wait for you to share any updates that you want to give us.

Thanks for keeping us posted on what’s going on. Hopefully everyone will behave themselves so that you don’t regret telling us what’s next.

I was going to ask for more on what Isekai was, then I came to my senses and googled. The first hit is a (4 yr old) article from the NYPL. that’ll do!

Growing up my brother watched Inuyasha and I played Kingdom Hearts, so now I’m like “Oh, this isn’t actually a new genre to me.”

Great job Mod R! And Nico, you’re part of us, the BDH! Pinky promise you’ll stay with us?
Ilona says
Nico, hungry, angry, lonely and tired are all things that can make you feel worse. You have to eat, and sleep, and rest. You are not alone. We are here.
Hang in there, and I will send you Maggie to read just for yourself when it’s presentable.
Libby says
And this is why I love and respect you guys so much. No other author(s) I follow have such respect and involvement with their fans, or in this case, horde.
Nico, things can be hard, but we are all here with you, mate. Sending love x
RosieTR says
Nico,
I echo Mod R in saying there is help available. In the US, 988 is the suicide/crisis line. You can call or text.
Patricia Schlorke says
Nico, I agree with Mod R and Ilona. The Horde is here with you. You are not alone. Don’t allow the nasty voices tell you to leave.
I know it’s hard right now, and it seems like you don’t see the end of the crap. However, life can get better.
I send you lots of hugs. Again, you are not alone.
Donna A says
Don’t do anything irreversible. I know it’s really hard to get an appointment at the moment and if you do it’s difficult to even talk to the GP about yourself sometimes, but if your surgery has online services you could try writing it.
Earlier this year I had a lapse myself and I didn’t want to regress to earlier poor mental health behaviours so I used an online form in a crisis point just wanting a little temporary relief, and within hours my GP telephoned me and we sorted some new medication as well as a temporary prescription and a longer term plan for CBT.
There’s things you can do that aren’t destructive but aren’t too hard or too in your face with feelings and the NHS can still help us even when you think they might not.
Please try and talk to someone.
Beth says
Please don‘t go, Nico. You are needed here and there is an end to the tunnel. We are here for you. Sending hugs & rainbows!
Melisa M. says
Hang in there and please use some of the resources from Mod R.
BDH cares for its own and we care what happens to you. I will pray for you and if you are not religious, no worries, I will also send good vibes and hugs 🙂
Whitney says
So sorry to hear you’re having such a rough time, Nico! But also, really glad you are finding some glimmers and anchors to hold onto. It can be hard to make a call or send a text or email for help, but please do – there could be someone on the other end who might shine a little more light your way when you feel completely stuck in the dark. Big hugs to you and to anyone else who might be feeling this way.
Whitney says
Shoot, typo in my name – should be Whitney…
Moderator R says

Whitney says
Thanks Mod R!

Sending you hugs and love to wrap yourself in like a favorite blanket. The BDH loves you!
Karen says
Nico, you are part of us! You are important, I cried when I read your post. Please don’t give up.You matter. The BDH loves you. sending love, hugs, light and hope.
Jazzlet says
Nico I am so sorry you are having suicidal ideation, I’ve been there so I know how hard it is not to just give in, instead please read all of the posts to you from your fellow Horde members, Mod R and Ilona, then bookmark them to reread as needed. Then maybe go and start rereading the Kate books or whichever House Andrews series you love the best- that helps me so I hope it might help you. Also reach out for help, whatever is going on there are people who care, and people who can help.
Sending hugs and/or hot chocolate or mulled cider or macaroni cheese or something, the something that makes you feel loved again and gives you the strength to go on.
Cynthia R says
Hi Nico,
Please reach out for help. Mod R has given many resources (Mod R is wonderful) and we all care about you and wish you well. Sending you hugs and good vibes.
A few years ago I was taking a new medication and suicidal ideation was not one of the side effects ever reported but it affected me that way. I was on it for about 7 months before I started having the symptoms. It took me way too long to figure out it was the medication. It all stopped when I stopped the medication. I am sharing this with you in the hope it will help you or someone else.
Wishing you all the best!
Keera says

I’m excited about anything you write, and “Maggie” sounds amazing.
I am happy to say I’m finally enough out of darkness that I am ready for Iron and Magic 2, whenever you get to it. I was one of those who wasn’t in the right place for it when you decided to put it off and happy you worked on other books for a bit.

(The serial killer is not the romantic interest.) ….. yet …. ::cough HUGH cough:: ;D
Moderator R says
He is a mass killer, not a serial killer! We have to get it right or his wife will come for us 😜.
Tink says
Kate is closer to the definition of a serial killer than Hugh, I would think. That said, everyone she killed deserved it.
Sara B. says
Not necessarily – yes everyone she killed since she has been on her own have “deserved it” … i.e. she killed to protect herself &/or others. But before that, Voron put her through a grim childhood, and we don’t know about all the kills that she made under his training. Bits of that resurface and force her to look at it through adult eyes — it is part of what makes her character growth so gripping and real. Yes she was a child and doing what her father told her to do … but Kate still thinks about it and owns what she did in the fighting pits and elsewhere. She is about the most self-aware character that I have ever read, and owns her history.
Sorry for long comment — just something that I find so interesting in the depth of her character development, and as the “living character”, in her survival and personal growth (from lone killer to “killer mom”).

It all sounds great!!! I cant wait! but I will

My son and I watch anime together and he was just telling me what isekai means the other day and which series we watched that was isekai. I’m so excited for this new book now. I’m always excited for new books from you, but it’s even more exciting for something different.

I’m actually not a fan of portal fantasy for adults (somehow it’s different when it’s kids, not sure why), but I’m sure yours will be great.
And sooooo excited for Iron and Magic 2! Not the kind to harass authors, so don’t worry… will wait patiently for the release announcement, yay!
Any holiday goodies will certainly be appreciated, but please do not feel like you have to. We are happy with anything you write, whenever we get them.

We are grateful for all your lovely creative contributions to our reading worlds.
CathyTara says
So excited, you created so much in such a short time period. Once again, I am learning new concepts: isekai. I have read stories with transporting to a new world and then surviving, but never knew the name. Of course, your influence has me stopping and reading about Sumerian and ancient Middle East history whenever it pops up on FB or in the news. #roland Hopefully you finish this book and take time to enjoy the upcoming holiday season.
Jess says
I’m so excited about both – thank you for telling us! I can’t wait to read both of them. 🙂
Silverloreguard says
I’m looking forward to this. it sounds really interesting and like it will be a fun read. maybe it’s just me but I’m not necessarily looking for a Kate 2.0 or a Hidden Legacy 2.0. I like the way that you write and the ways you express things in your writing. So seeing you do something different is kinda exciting because I have come to trust the way that you approach characters and world building that even if a genre wasn’t normally something I would be interested in it would be something that I would be willing to give the benefit of the doubt to see what you do with it. I look forward to hearing about the progress when you are ready to share them and the snippets have been a lot of fun so far.

Yay to Maggie and “something completely different” (ok, channeling a little classic Monty Python there). Yay on continuation of Iron & Magic saga up next. Please take the time you need (both to unwind and re-charge, and to do the writing), because your process WORKS … resulting in terrific books.
I am almost finished with another re-read of Kate-world books, including Iron & Magic 1, Blood Heir, and the two Wilmington stories. Am on Magic Tides, so just “Clams” to go, and then mop-up with the various short stories/novellas, etc. I go through the various series at least once or twice a year, always find some new thought or slant. I do a few other books that way, but generally not full series like yours.
PS – I just found two British shows that I had never watched, and there are oodles of episodes … Midsomer Murders and Doc Martin. Recommending to the horde, although most people who would enjoy these have probably already discovered them.

Very excited for Maggie (even though I’m more LOTR than Game of Thrones but I trust you).
Very, very excited about Iron and Magic 2. I will not harass you, but I will make 1 request. When I read I don’t see the scenes, I hear them. The voices, the intonation the ambient sounds are very real to me. Historically I didn’t listen to audible books because they were harder for me to get into. Weird I know but….then came Iron and Magic 1. I believe the reader/actor is Steve West? He is/was brilliant. And that voice (I’m shivering right now). If there is any way you can fit his schedule with yours, well this old lady would be very grateful!
Thank you for all you do.

No effort will be spared in getting Steve West to reprise the role of Hugh 🙂. His Hugh is legend!
Emily says
I’m also fingers crossed for Steve West again. Iron and Magic is one of my favorite audiobooks which is saying something because I rarely listen to fiction audiobooks. I’m very picky about narrators and even more so when they’re reading a novel. Steve West is exactly what my brain thinks Hugh should sound like.
Kristi says
Thank you so much!!
sarafina says
I really like Steve West. I’m listening to GA’s rendition of Magic Strikes and all the men sound yummy. SO EXCITED ABOUT NEW HUGH!!!!!!!!!
Joy says
Iron and Magic!!!! So excited.

I’ve actually been reading a lot of isikai lately, so this project sounds fantastic to me. Looking forward to reading it!
Kianne says
Happily waiting for the books to reach the shelves or e-books. 🙂
Lw says
I’m excited to read the new work. Different is something exciting.
Please don’t stress too much over Iron and Magic 2! We’ll love it! For now, I’ll wait to dust off my copy of 1 until closer to the release of 2.
Thank you for all you give us.
Donna A says
I’m very excited for Maggie, though the grand betrayal tag has me preemptively anxious! From this fan I say you should write whatever you want to afterwards but be sure and take a well earned rest first. And from the look of the comments section you probably really shouldn’t have mentioned Iron and Magic book 2! (I will be much hated for this but I’m so contrary I now slightly want you to say that you’ve changed your mind and will write something else instead 😉 )
Whitney says
Maggie sounds awesome! But to be honest, it doesn’t matter what you write, I’ll read it. Your world building is always fascinating, and the characters are nuanced and authentic. I’m glad you take the time to make well-crafted stories, so thank you. Your snippets always make my day.
Maria Schneider says
Looking forward to all of it. No pressure. Loved the bit about the dress. Reminds me of me. I currently own a pair of pants that I got on sale. Bought them online for a STEAL. They were described has khaki colored. Well, the reason they were so cheap??? They were mustard yellow, the brownish, stone ground color with a kind of yellow algae thing going on. Only uglier because if you squint at them sideways there’s a tint of puke green mixed in there. Don’t worry, I ordered a cheap black pair too! And it became PAINFULLY obvious that they tried to dye the ugly mustard pants right after I tried to dye the ugly mustard pants. They are not black. They are…is that dark brown with black…why are the pants kind of glowing mustard algae in this light? In any light??? But hey! They were cotton! And on sale! Free shipping and normally 75 dollar pants…and I somehow own two mustard colored puke pants.
Patricia Schlorke says
Sounds like the new dye didn’t take, or it took, but the mustard wanted to hang on.
It could be the manufacturer over dyed the fabric to cause the color horror.
What a color description of your pants! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Marian says
Leave yourselves some time to rest after the last big push. Holidays are for relaxing.

No bugging promise! Just some very quiet subtle jumpy claps 🙂

Isekai is my favorite anime thrope. I’m so glad you wrote a story in that style and will pre-order it whenever that’s available. Sending everyone happy vibes.
Emily says
Iron and Magic 2? Really?
*sad/hopeful puppy dog eyes*
I have had my fingers crossed you would get to it soon. I will keep being patient as much as I can; I will not bother House Andrews because authors don’t need any extra stress.
I am looking forward to Maggie too of course! I think I’ve only read one portal fantasy since high school; there were a few series back at that time that made the rounds of my group of friends.
Emily says
Re: puppy dog eyes
I have two dogs. The older one has huge dark brown eyes and they are outlined in black skin which makes them look even bigger. And I swear her pupils are always dilated. She’s like that gif of Puss in Boots from Shrek. And she turns into Sad Victorian Orphan Puppy at the drop of a hat. Her ears go down and she looks up at you like she has never known love and if you just do what she wants it will keep her from wasting away. And she’s smart enough to be manipulative, she knows exactly what she’s doing.
And then we have Thing 2, Willow, the younger dog. She has small golden eyes and Yoda ears, and when she wants something her eyes go wide so you can see the whites around them. Poor Willow cannot beg effectively to save her soul. She ends up with a blep and crazy eyes and Yoda ears.
So what I’m saying is, when I say sad puppy dog eyes, I’m talking about the deep dark pools of irresistible Victorian Orphan Destitution, not Bleppy Caffeinated Yoda.
Kira says

Ack, ack, ack!!!
laura says
dying laughing at your descriptions of your dogs! i can picture both of them perfectly. i had a previous dog who could do sad begging victorian orphan quite well. my current dog can’t do those eyes, but she’s part husky and will follow me around telling me all the tales of her woe. so much woe.
“aroo roo roo roo roo!”
“oh really?”
“arooooo roo roo”
“its like that is it?”
“arooo roo roo roo”

“rooooo. arooroo roo.”

Hmmm…. 120k? Makes me wonder if you’ll get to 130k with Maggie. =) Hugh and Elara II made me squee, too! I finally got started in the Graphic Audio Kate books, and I’m really enjoying them! Gotta tell the boss about them, because she has said Kate is her favorite. She finished HL and I think Innkeeper, too. But fun chat is really limited right now due to a rabies issue in our county. ::sigh:: But I’ve said it before, you two could write a phone book and we’d gobble it up and love it! =)
iread78 says
my brain, upon reading the genre: “ITS AN ISEKAI!!!!!!!” and then after I was able to think more words “I have to go reread the snippets with this added context immediately”
(also yay on Iron and Magic 2! I appreciate the update on the next project – it lets me know what to reread in anticipation 🙂 )
HeatherR says
*Squeeeeeeeee!!!*
(About both but especially I&M2 mention)
That’s all I’ll say about it though. continue on as usual. 😉
Leigh says
Thank you for making Iron and Magic your next story. I’m looking forward to it!
I’m so excited about Maggie. Can’t wait to read it.
Kate says
Sympathy. I remember Obama‘s puzzled response when someone asked him in December after he was elected why he hadn’t fixed the economy yet. His answer was basically, “You know I’m not actually the President for another three weeks, right?”
We are an impatient, ever hungry hoard.
Dixie Rhodes says
This is totally (kind of) unrelated, but I’m doing it. My husband has never enjoyed reading because he’s dyslexic. I started reading the Kate series to him and now he’s completely hooked on your writing! He wanted me to let you know the joy that he gets from the books and how much he loves the books. Reading out loud to him has changed the books for me, too. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Kayeri (aka Darth Mom) says
That’s how I got my husband into the BDH, too. =) Every time I laughed, snorted, or made some other noise, he made me read it to him. =) Now he’s a BDHer in his own right, although he says he’s in the “husband’s auxiliary” of the BDH. =)
Bookworm says
I can’t WAIT for all of the above. I don’t want to pressure you (and I’m honestly not trying to do so), but I really hope you can get Steve West (even if we have to wait a lot longer) for Iron and Magic 2. Like Ilona, when I read Hugh now in a book, I hear Steve West (which is true for most of the characters he voiced, but Hugh is 100% Steve for me). I love the Graphic Audio books, but I keep expecting to hear Steve for Hugh. 😂. Thank you so much for sharing. May your days be smooth, your writing flow easily, and May EVERY word get published. 😂😂😂
Rebecca says
The BDH is impatient and whiney, but we LOVE you, so we hope you’ll forgive us!
I promise personally to try to restrain myself and refrain from all nagging and incessant Is-It-Done-Yet questions!
*quietly cheers “WHOOP!! Iron and Magic 2!! WHOOP WHOOP!!”*
Rebecca says
P.S. Maggie also sounds amazing! I know you said “not anchor series material” but I wouldn’t be so quick to say that.
Shannon says
Yay Maggie! Yay odd and stubby! Yay Iron and Magic 2! You are the best!
You really *are* the best, I am in awe of your skill, talent and hard work. Then I start worrying that you’re working *too* hard…before Mom mode kicks in, I will shut up.
Thank you, looking forward to Maggie.
Laura says
Ooh, weird new shiny!
I hope Iron & Magic 2 isn’t too rough on you guys 🤞🏼
Cats says
So excited, a brand new world! and promise of Iron and Magic 2! Gives me chills. Will wait patiently . . .
Isa says
Oooooh. I would be excited for anything you do! This new genre made me think of my friend who is an illustrator and her work would be perfect for the Maggie’s cover!

Melisa M. says
I am looking forward to Maggie even more than before! I didn’t even know that was possible. I have literally loved everything you guys have written so I am not worried about weird or odd. You guys have a way of making those things gold.
Robyn A. says
No pressure here! Looking forward to the new book, whenever it is ready! Very exciting!
Whitney says
“There was something about blades and magic that did it for me. Deadly swordsmen with sleek weapons, thieves prowling through the night cities, dark magicians, ruthless nobles, I loved it all.”
Omg, all the squees over here! This sounds absolutely fantastic! Is it weird? I don’t know yet – but I love every tidbit of description you’ve given us so far! Gritty! Dark! Romantasy-esque! Stabby-stabby-ness! Funnies and absurdities! My brain is exploding, lol. I want for you guys to have what you want from it – even if that means…. w$@ting for trad publishing…. Oy. BDH will be brave and have patience!
I promise not to ask about Hugh #2 … but, woot!
Sending all the good thoughts your way!
Jean says
Yay Maggie!! 📚
Yay I & M#2!! 📚

Thank you thank you thank you. I’m thrilled to hear Iron and Magic 2 is coming. You have all my respect and patience because I know it will be damn brilliant.
Whitney Morrical says
Can’t wait!
Lara says
thank you!
Andreas says
Just wondering…do you all really mean it when you say that you will be patient?
Patricia Schlorke says
If we want eventual Hugh and Elara snippets…this member of the Horde will be very patient. 😇😎📚
Can’t speak for the rest of the Horde, though.
Jukebox says
As a massive consumer of webtoons daily, with a strong lean towards fantasy, action, romance, and of course isekai, reincarnation or transmigration (I’ve probably read most of them), I find nothing weird about these type of stories! What’s more weird is finding one that’s above par, either not full of tropes, or making fun of such tropes, or where the art is just as beautiful as the story (I.E. Secret Lady or Stepmother’s Marchen).
To hear my favorite authors are taking a spin on it means we’re in for something ☆☆☆GOOD☆☆☆ Can’t wait!
Aurelia says
SO EXCITED FOR IRON AND MAGIC #2!!!! 👏👏👏👏
Gundega says
ooooh, isekai, nice 😁
and we’re finally getting Hugh #2 wohoooo! don’t need to know anything else, happy writing 😄
Gerganna says
o yeeeeee!!Sound great!!thank you Family ❤️❤️❤️
Stacey VanHouten says
Asking the BDH to “not get excited” when you are talking about a new work is like asking Kate to not use her sword again. Please. . .
E says
but Kate did manage it. She head butted the guy unconscious instead.
silently chanting, ” we can do it, we can do it, we can do it.”
Valerie says
We will love the new thing and say thank you prettily, be it fantasy, romance, Kate, Hidden Legacy, Innkeeper, or Edge….or a few titles that I’ve left off. And yes, I may daydream about night out & a poker table with Dina and Kate and Julie and Adira and Maud and Sophie and Cerise and Rose trading stories as Caldenia & Evdokia watch bemused…but doesn’t mean I won’t welcome new amazing characters and magic to the table:). Thank you so much for the stories. Always,
Naenae says
“It’s an isekai”
YES!!!! My favorite genre of Manga/Anime. Everyone get on the Maggie train.
If the BDH hasn’t seen it Isekai anime has been scraping the bottom of the barrel for good ideas this year. We have one where someone is reincarnated as a vending machine. Makes the one where the person was reincarnated as a sword (which was actually decent) look great.
I now have 20 million questions about the tropes.
Did Maggie get hit by an out of control car/bus/truck? Does she get a ridiculous skill that makes her OPed? Is there some gimmick which keeps her at Lvl 1?
Maggie!!! Maggie!!
Thank you for writing and good luck on writing the book which will not be named.
Ash says
Love everything about this!
Gonna try and find Maggie snippets.
KenH says
Maybe I misremember, but I thought I had read in the blog during Covid that you had written a second Iron and Magic book. But you chose not to release it as it was grim and you thought the real world was grim enough already.
Are you starting from scratch or reworking that book? Or am I completely misremembering? 🙂
Moderator R says
Completely misremembering 🙂. The book is not written, and never was.
Lethe (the Lurker) says
Ok folks, …shushhh it is! Only quiet desperation for a House Andrews fix from here out 😉
Junia says
Thank you for everything you write for us. We know we can be insufferable, so thank you for not abandoning us 😂🩵
Tiffany says
Okay, so, yes, I am excited about Iron and Magic, but right now, I am 100% ALL IN for Maggie.
I know it’s not Kate, and I am very okay with that. You and Gordon are authors. You’re allowed to grow and change and (*gasp*) branch out, even after many years in the field.
Personally, I’m looking forward to exploring this branch, and I know I’m not the only one ♥
Emily says
I have a question & I’m okay if you don’t want to answer at this point.
Do you anticipate the work-in-progress currently entitled Maggie to be a stand alone novel or the first book in a series?
I have a hard time waiting for the next book, particularly if there is any type of cliff hanger, so I prefer to start a series when it is finished.
In this case I will pre-order Maggie the day it becomes available and promptly devour it on release night regardless of your answer but it would help to be mentally prepared for any loose ends or cliff hangers.
**Trying to be a fluffy horde member.**
Elisabeth says
I am so happy for Iron and Magic 2. I love to know how the story continues.
Thanks a ton!
Elizabeth says
Maggie sounds like my brand of reader catnip. I look forward to hearing more as it comes, likewise for Iron and Magic 2.
ColleenR says
Thank you for feeding our curious minds. And please take the time you need to be yourselves first. I’m as impatient as the next fan, sure. And I’m also a fan of good mental health.
Allison says
I love all of your worlds and can’t wait to read all about the next world. Thank you for snippets and everything you give to we the BDH.
Dee T says
No pressure Happy Dance! I am excited you are ready to work on Iron Covenant 2! I am sucker for a redeemed villain who faces consequences for his actions. And that Elara snippet was soooooo good. But no pressure, on when. Nope, nope, nope. Just excited it will happen, lol.
I look forward to Maggie and I think it’s hilarious how you try to temper our expectations and we are like “Horde happy has new Book to Devour!” Happy Horde noises.
Sue says
Woo Hoo!!!
Much excitement and gratitude for goodies coming our way! We are a much loved BDH.
Thank you and have a lovely weekend!!!
Lee says
Thank you for the update, it’s appreciated.
Elizabeth Briggs says
I’m very excited about this new series!
Chris says
This is exciting. First: Iron & Magic 2! Woo Hoo! That’s the last I’ll say about it. I’m the king of delayed gratification, & the thought of opening that particular present the day AFTER Christmas ~next~ year is really cool (and if it takes until Labor Day the year after that, that’s ok too 😁).
Maggie! Portal stories can be tricky. There’s the risk of too much “I know things your primitive minds haven’t even conceived of” or “I’m overwhelmed by these things ~I’ve~ never conceived of.” But from Lewis Carroll to Piers Anthony to Terry Brooks to O.S. Card to Diana Gabaldon, when they work, they’re amazing. I’m looking forward to this. I may be your only fan who “merely tolerates” the sex scenes in your stories [the action, dialogue, & underlying ideas keep me coming back for more], & I’ll keep skipping ahead on those, but the snippets you’ve already released from Maggie have me hooked & you can reel me in at your convenience. I wish you success with however you decide to publish it! (Someone really should just deliver a dump truck of money to your driveway every year in exchange for your latest novel).
Chachic says
Can’t wait to read Maggie!!
Teri Langston says
Please remember you can always change your mind. It’s your prerogative. No pressure. Write whatever you enjoy writing.

Thanks for the update on Maggie and your plans. I truly hope a publisher picks it up!

an Ilona Andrews isekai?! specifically, an Ilona Andrews fantasy romance isekai with black magic and murder?!
this is proof (to me) that God is real and does, in fact, answer prayers. 🥹
Stephanie says
Yay!!!! So excited for Maggie!!! And SO excited for Iron and Magic 2. I dearly hope my fellow BDH-ers don’t make your lives miserable for announcing what you’re working on 🙁 Take as long as you need, and do whatever you have to do to keep yourselves happy/healthy while you work on it!!! I would be so desperately sad if you ever burned out and stopped writing, so please do whatever it takes to keep yourselves enjoying your writing. Every story you give us is a gift that brings us endless joy (I cannot tell you how many times I have reread every single book you’ve written). Thank you, and we love you!!!!

It’s been a tough 5 years for me (before covid even started), and adulting continues to be a challenge for me. Reading and listening where I can, to both the audio and graphic audio versions, of all your stories are what have helped to keep me sane and looking forward. Thank you for practicing your craft and sharing it with the world.
Looking forward to new adventures and revisiting familiar heroes! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
sarafina says
YES YES YES!!!!! HUGH IS COMING!!!!
Will Maggie be self-published? I know it sounds like it, but I confuse early and often. Just knowing Hugh is at the top of the list comforts me enormously, though.
Moderator R says
As House Andrews say “you have to wait a bit until we decide what to do with it. […] We will announce what happens to this book as soon as it does. You will know when we will know.”
No decisions have been made yet regarding traditional or self-pub, they have to go through the agency

I live isekai! I can’t wait. The only thing that could be better is if your next off-genre foray steps all the way past isekai into GameLit, or even LitRPG. Then HA would officially usurp Alexey Osadchuk as my favorite Russian-ish author

love you guys. hope all the best for the new book. I’m not sure if it will be one I like or not one thing I love about your books to date is there relaxing don’t get too tense I don’t have to worry about the main characters dying which is one reason I stopped reading a lot of the male authors even though I loved their story’s, some feel a need to kill off characters pretty regularly and I can’t handle it LOL guess I’m too fragile.
I wish all the best for house Andrews, the mods and all of bdh

Iron and Magic 2, whoohoohoo!

Thank you for being the wonderful, detail-oriented, quality writers that you are. I do browse through my reading/listening stash and and think, “Oh, how I wish there was something new from Ilona Andrews.” But that’s because you are awesome, not because I want you to hurry up and finish. When you complete the next what ever book it is, I will buy it, I will read it, and I know I will love it.

Heee-heee-hah! Very glad to read all of this. I hope “Maggie” finds a home because the thought of a HA portal story fills me with joy. I haven’t read much of that type, but there’s one series (maybe I learned of it from a recommendation thread on this blog?) that has become a go-to comfort read.
I shall patiently wait for the other and never say a word about it until something is voluntarily released. 🙂

Congratulations on being close to finished with Maggie! It must feel amazing to finish the first draft of such a large project – at least until the edits come in. 🙂 I sincerely hope that you get to take at least a week or two off to recover.
I haven’t read any Isekai (other than old ones, like Alice in Wonderland), so I’m really excited about Maggie – I bet it will be amazing. And thank you for your generosity in telling us about Hugh! I’m sitting here with a really huge grin and I’m wishing you zero pressure while you write it.

So excited for Maggie!
I love reading Asian Isekais, but there really isn’t much in the genre coming out of western lit, so this will be fun!!
For anyone that doesn’t know, isekai (異世界) is a Japanese word that translates to “different/strange/another world.” So, the genre is basically that – when some is either transported to (think Narina) or reborn into another world.

No microscope. No ball and chain weekly clips needed. Iron and Magic two will be great. Just relax and enjoy writing it.

An odd love letter to fandom? How wonderful! AND as much as 120,000 House Andrews words?
Reading doesn’t get better than this. Authors should not be required to colour within the lines when there is a story worth telling that doesn’t fit the usual mold.
I’ll just reread your previous publications and continue to explore other authors recommended by the Book Devouring Horde until the day the new book appears on my Kindle, happy to add another Ilona Andrews volume to my collection.

Excited for Iron and Magic #2!! Now I can stop all my internet searches trying to figure out what mythology/pantheon Elara’s, err, friend belongs to… Seriously, this one question has haunted me for YEARS!

:OOOOO !!!!!!!!
BUT OKAY. If it’s so stressful please don’t worry. we’ve been waiting a while and we can wait a while longer. I would prefer you both have time to enjoy and have fun writing the book and go slower than be overly stressed about people asking “when it’s done”. Who cares about the haters pls go live your best life.
Believe me, I’ve read Iron and Magic like 7-8 times (tbh I’ve lost count ngl), most recently as of last week. But if I can wait so can the rest!!! wishing you good vibes and low stress ☺️
Minna says
Uuu Maggie sounds perfect! Hopefully one day I can click “yes pls deliver it to me now” button.
As for the next book: it takes as long as it does.
I do not understand people who think authors should be whipped into speed. For them I say:
Let me come to your work and whip you over your shoulder for a week.
Trust me: you would not like it. I am really good at it. 🙂
Kathy says
I love what I’ve seen of “Maggie” so far, so whomever/however it’s published I’ll be happy to buy it.
Iron and Magic 2 will be ignored until there’s information on how to buy it. 😀

Look forward to. I don’t expect you to finish at any particular time- life will happen and it will be available to me when it is ready. But I love hearing it is half way there. And that it pauses. And that it starts again. I feel connected. Informed. And its kind of like watching dragon egg hatch- who knows when it happens but it’s exciting watching it to hatch!

Hi
I would like to know if you are going to write a sequel to blood heir.
Moderator R says
Yes, the Blood Heir series will continue in the future :). The announcement above is as far ahead as House Andrews are willing to commit at the present moment, so we do not have further official details on it or a release date.

… further *official* details…

Thank you – so much – for letting us know that there will be a sequel to Iron and Magic. I loved the first book, and am looking forward to revisiting those characters.

Iron and Magic 2 is next.
Dealing with all kinds of issues – robberies, betrayals and humans with hearts of beasts and this line made it all fade into the woodwork.
Kat M. says
oh shit. I got so excited about Maggie that I failed to notice the important bit at the bottom.
oh dang.

I’m cool. it’s cool. we’re all cool here.
we’re a very good horde and we’re going to be very respectful of our authors and their time and their work and their mental health.

Okay, but is it isekai, or is it portal fantasy? Those aren’t the same genre, for all that they have the same basic setting.
(Short version is that isekai are primarily power fantasies focused on the main character gaining strength, while portal fantasies are escapist fantasies focusing on the main character exploring new worlds)
Ilona says
Isekai simply means “another world.” The term comes to us from Japanese folklore. Any story where protagonist is either reincarnated into a new world or transported into a new world is technically isekai.
The power fantasy is a trope common in the isekai fantasy, especially when it’s geared toward young male audience, but it’s not part of the definition of the genre. 🙂 For example, My Next Life as a Villainess is an isekai (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Next_Life_as_a_Villainess:_All_Routes_Lead_to_Doom!)

OMG! As an avid webtoon reader, I am obsessed with Isekai! I wondered a few weeks ago why Western fantasy book writers have yet to tap into such a popular genre. Of course, it had to be my favorite authors that would make it happen hahaha

I just reread Iron and Magic and was a little sad because I have not heard much about the next book. Happy to hear it is under way.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for Iron & Magic II. I will be patient, I will not bug, but Iron & Magic I is my hands down favorite of your books and I am so excited for #2!!! Thank you!!!

First time commenting but I love iron and magic so much and I’m super excited to continue my patient and quiet waiting for the sequel. I’ve managed to keep myself back from asking about iron and magic since I think you mentioned after covid and some personal stuff you guys weren’t in a place to write a dark book. And you’ve written enough books for me to reread as I wait. But iron and magic and the castle and characters are definitely my fav of all the Ilona andrews books and one of my favorites period. Which is ironic cuz I kept putting it off when I realized it was about Hugh thinking it wouldn’t be my vibe and only bought it early covid after I had baked way too much banana bread. I’m fairly certain it’s currently my most read book. And I already don’t like rereading books. Im usually a one and done girl but iron and magic like all the Ilona andrews have some secret crack that constantly convince me I just want to read a specific part and end up spending a week rereading the whole series. Anyway this is a long and late way of saying I’m a major fan, your books helped me get thru the very deranged fever dream of early 2020 and still comes thru for me. I’m super super excited for more books but since I’m a lurker more than a commenter you won’t hear a peep out of me. At least until the day it’s released and you suddenly hear someone screeching in excitement but from I’ve seen around here I won’t be the only one to blame for that one

So excited!!! All your stuff is gold (and the horde wants to hoard it!)
Good luck with Iron and Magic 2- your attention to detail will put out quality and I, for one, won’t rush you all when I know it will be awesome whenever you get ‘er done.
Tis the season to eat pastries as you write 😉
