Mod R here, sliding in just before the ball drops.
As we tiptoe toward midnight, we have a very important New Year’s resolution to keep, and we need you to help us with it.
We’re on the hunt for voice actor recommendations for an audiobook role that is very near and dear to the BDH’s heart: Augustine Montgomery aka Pancakes, aka Head of House Montgomery, aka Illusion Prime extraordinaire, best friend of Mad Rogan, mentor to Arabella Baylor, and keeper of very deep secrets.
In case you need visual motivation, I just happened to find some lying around today after Ilona left for her birthday mini-break. It’s New Year’s Eve, restraint is overrated, and sharing is caring. Everybody gets a treat!

Hubba DING DONG Hubba!
Specifications for the audio narrator of our Montgomerian dreams:
- Early to mid-30s
- Cultured, aristocratic businessman vibes
- Attractive in a sophisticated assassin type of way, not a musclehead alpha-growly way
- Range of voices, especially good female voices. Augustine is an Illusion mage and he speaks in character when he changes visage. It has to be believable and natural, Pancakes puts a lot of effort and control into it.
If you’ve ever listened to an audiobook and thought “Wait, how is that even the same person?” — that’s the energy we want to ring in.
The champagne is chilling, the comment section awaits…oh wait, I nearly forgot:
“Augustine?”
“Yes?”
“If I wasn’t there, would you have killed all of them?”
There was a tiny pause before he answered. “It would’ve been bad for business.”
May your 2026 be a year full of joy and good reading!

I like these Pancakes!!
FIRST on the last day of 2025! That’s a feat!
yippee! ending 2025 on high note! thank you Mod R!
Commooonn !!!
Thanks for the treat!
Happy New Year Everyone 🙂
Ooooooo much appreciation on the NYE treat, Mod R! I have no experience with audiobooks but I always enjoy the snippets posted. Happiest of birthdays to Ilona and a happy new year to all BDH members and of course HA. 🥳
Uh, I like this Pic! sadly I’ve no recommendation for a voice. didn’t much listen to Audiobrooks in the Last… hm, maybe months.
have a wonderful New Year!
I absokutely love listing to books narrated by Stephen Dexter. He is the main voice actor for Victoria Avelines Clecanian series.
Happy new year to the horde!!!!!
Happy birthday to Ilona. Wishing you all the best this new year
I think Jacob Morgan might work. I’ve listened to a few of his narrations and didnt realise it was the same person, until I was looking it up. His female voices are pretty good to, so much so I prefer his female voice to that of the female narrator he is sometimes paired with. Most of what I listen to is romance so he fits category wise as well. Good luck with the search!
The pictures arent what I visualized for Augustine, but it works and is now in my brain!
Happy Birthday Ilona.
Hope everyone has a Happy New Year 😊
agreed with Jacob Morgan. first name that popped into my mind. happy birthday and new year!
Kyle McCarley. He did “The Goblin Emperor”.
Jacob Morgan, Teddy Hamilton, Joe Arden and Sebastian York all have my vote for an audiobook
What about Steve West!? Gives me the shivers all the time. Not sure on the American accent though.
LOVE Steve West. But he’s Hugh, not Augustine. And yeah, he’s much too European.
I do love when we reach out to GA actors
Squealing with excitement. Thank you for the image, Mod R.
I hope you had a good break. I am very chalant about a book about pancakes!! Especially as it is not a cookbook. ❤️
Scott Brick. Not young but I get vibes when he reads a book.
My absolute favorite narrator is Greg Tremblay/Boudreaux. He is an amazing voice actor and I don’t hate his female voices and accents. Everything sounds natural.
Greg Tremblay / Greg Boudreaux Audiobook Narrator – Greg@gtremblayvoice.com
I totally agree. Greg Trembley/Boudreau is my favorite audible performer…and I have over 500 Audible books on my account!
I sometimes choose a book solely because he is the performer He is a performer…not just a narrator. He does accents and genders very well in my opinion.
Samples: Smokescreen by Sam Burns, Woods of the Raven by Mary Calmes, The Watchman by Arthur Bradley.
I love love love Woods of the Raven. I reslisten to it all the time as a comfort book.
I’m so excited!!😆 I will have to think back on some of my favorites because I’m super picky about men doing the female voices. When they work they are wonderful but when they don’t…😬
Yuuuup. That’s exactly the issue. We don’t want it to sound like mocking women.
Oooh, I’m going to have to check it out. I love the Raven books, wasn’t sure if the audiobook would be any good.
Wil Wheaton is always good.
I love Wil Wheaton!
came to recommend Greg. he’s excellent.
Oooh, love these Pancakes. I have no suggestions. Just wishing everyone a Happy New Year filled with sanity, happiness, a lack of war, and affordable groceries.
Seconded on all counts.
I’m a big fan of Robert Petkof and Holter Graham
I was going to say Holter Graham as well. Doesn’t meet the age, but hits every other bullet.
I do like Holter Graham
Jeff Hays 🙂 i got irritated that he was the only person credited for voice work at the end of the book when there was so many people in it. and then checked it and turned out it was all him, so definitely ticks the box.
I second Jeff Hayes, but he’s Soundbooth Theater. I doubt he’ll do it unless it’s under their company name.
I also thought of Jeff Hays. His versatility is top tier.
He has his own website where he talks about why he’d be right for a job, so I think he’s open to random inquiries.
https://www.jeffhaysnarrates.com/
Kid suggested Alejandro Saab and Paul Castro Jr. Will add more possibiles after.
Robert Petcoff +1000
Also love Holter Graham as well. Definitely my Charles Cornick
+1 for Holter Graham
Add me to the Holter Graham list! He’s fantastic!
Will Damron and Dan Bittner are two that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed recently.
Happy New Year from the horde!
Hello and happy birthday!!
Greg wise from ״planet of apes ״ is nice
Will Wheaton from “the Martian”
Scot brick is really good !
Tor Thom is hot 🔥🔥
Saskia Maarleveld is a superb audiobook reader with great range of voiced characters. Take a listen to her “A Short Walk Through a Wide World.”
Love Pancakes! So excited to see more of his story!
Seth Podowitz. Absolutely fantastic and perfect voice for it. He’s the voice of Damien in AK Caggiano’s A Throne in the Dark.
OMG Anthony Palmini easy!!! It will be perfect 🤩
I agree he is my absolute favorite. He does a huge variety of voices. Jacob Morgan is a close second.
I agree with you on Anthony Palmini! I just listened to some of the recommendations and he’s terrific at female voices as well.
I know it sounds crazy but Fluffy can do just about any voice.
This is true!! Fluffy can (audio) impersonate ANYONE
Gabriel Iglesias if you aren’t familiar with his stage name! He’s a fabulous global comedian
Check out Richard Epcar! Lots of voice acting experience, Raiden, The Joker, Batou.
Michael Ferraiuolo would be absolutely perfect! he does an incredible range of tones and accents for the Goliaths of Wrestling series by Lily Mayne.
I’ve heard him do Texan, a cultured British, other various European accents, a really deep sexy voice, and lighter but still masculine tones along with a good range of females. I always know which character is talking and his comedic timing is impeccable.
Ive been checking out the recommendations so I can make a vote and definitely second michael ferraiuolo for augustine!
Love him and Michael Lesley (his narration of Alice Winters’ A Villain for Christmas is one of the funniest listening experiences! I loved his accents and timing for the jokes).
ModR, you are a gem, thank you!
I think my comment went under someone elses. How do I move it? Sorry 😞
Sebastian York immediately came to mind. I’d have said Shane East, but Augustine isn’t British. Or maybe Zach Webber, who has good range and is delightful to listen to?
Ahhh, hello Pancakes!
CJ Mission would fit, I think. Or JF Harding?
Seeing this I now hear the voice of Percival DeRolo from the Legend of Vox Machina.
That is Taliesin Jaffe. I have watch a lot of critical Role but I have never heard him do a female voice, so I do not know how his female voice would sound
Yes!!!! I 💯 agree
I adore Danny Gavigan! He narrates my Conduit World books but also Sean in the graphic audio for Innkeeper!
Augustine is one character I have absolutely no visualization for. Whatever I think of, he then does something different! 🙂
LaMont Ridgell played Augustine in graphic audio adaptations and I think he did a great job. It would be glad to hear him again❤️
Andrea Parsneau isn’t male, but she does amazing male, female, and “other” voices. In the Wandering Inn (LitRPG), she even had a special dialect for Ants. There aren’t many voice actors who can match her range of characters.
Agreed!
Most versatile favorite narrator of all time is Jeff Hayes. I also love John Kielty for the sophisticated vibe and I think he’s pretty versatile too.
+1 for Jeff Hayes. Might not be available though.
+15 for Jeff Hayes! I was listening to the Dungeon Crawler books and wondered how many voice actors they were using. Only one! And he does them seamlessly, without breaking. Check him out on video.
Totally agree! Jeff Hays is amazing – I did the same thing, thinking there were additional voice actors but he does them all, and they are distinctly different, very impressive!
+1 to Greg Tremblay and Michael Ferriauolo.
I immediately thought of them.
Ohhhhh excellent choices!
Yay! I also recommended Greg Tremblay! And Michael Ferriaulo is amazing as well.
Squeeeeee!!!!!!!! I love the Hidden Legacy series and cannot wait!!!! *fans self*
Raynor Gabriel. He’s done all sorts of characters for Graphic Audio (credit search says 323 titles). In one book for K.F. Breen, his character turns out to be someone else completely. He was able to shift his characterization so you still knew it was the same actor but it was also clear that he had dropped his mask.
I absolutely love Scott Brick. He does the Clive Cussler books and is absolutely amazing! 🤩
Jeff Hayes who does all the Dungeon Crawler Carl books. (And heck the whole sound booth audio team)
Here is my recommendation:
https://www.instagram.com/chrisnaturallyrp?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
The best voice actor/reader in my opinion is Alex Knox. He does the audio Arcane Casebook series by Dan Willis except for the first book. Alex took over for the second book and has done all eleven audio books of that series with another one coming in February. There are female characters that you would swear were done by female readers but all done by Alex Knox. His voice range is unbelievable- it’s that good. All the characters have a distinct voice. There is no confusion on which character is being acted
I second this recommendation after giving him a listen
+1 to Alex Knox (i suggested him further down before thinking to see whom others have suggested)
I have never wished for Travis Willingham to be an audio narrator until this moment…
I have every faith in whoever is selected and I may never recover from this art 👀 my goodness
oooo yes to this and Laura has stated in the past she is a fan of Ilona, so its a win for everyone in the end.
Jester would thoroughly rattle Augustine LOL
Thank you so much for sharing & Happy New Year to all of us!
Hate to be negative, but whoever the chosen narrator will be, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE don’t let him be the guy voicing him on Graphic Audio. That was a hideous choice and made Pancakes sound like a 60-year-old retired car sales dude with exactly as much sex- and other appeals! Ugh! I’m still incensed about him.
Zachary Weber wouldn’t be a bad choice, methinks.
I agree. Too much talking through the nose.
Im glad Im not the only one. I like GA series but really dislike his Augustine. He isnt suave enough
Wasn’t a fan of the GA Pancakes either. He was too pedantic! It kind of came across as whiney.
+1
+1
+1
+1
I worried I was the only one who found him mis-casted! When they shared samples of the ferret heist, I was aghast at how whiny and stuck-up Augustine sounded.
Honestly, it’s the main reason I haven’t purchased the GA adaptations for Hidden Legacy when I’ve purchased the Innkeeper GA series. I can’t stand listening to Augustine and he figured more heavily than I liked in Book #2.
Without a doubt, Jon Vertullo who did the voice of George in the Innkeeper chronicles. He’s also done Cassian in ACOTAR and Caleb in Zodiac Academy. Cultured and urbane? Check. Dry humor? Check, check. Wide range from deep to female voices? Check, check and CHECK!
Cassian’s voice in the Graphic Audio version of ACOTAR? Yes, please!
Yes!!!
Happy New Year everyone!!
Another mention for Greg Tremblay/Boudreaux or Michael Ferraiuolo – they both have great range. Joel Leslie and Michael Lesley are also really good.
Steve West…… but he is and will always be Hugh. When you listen to Iron and Magic, it is unbelievable the range of voices he has.
That being said…Ray Porter did an excellent job on Project Hail Mary.
Male, female, Dutch, Russian, Chinese, etc
Also love Barton Welch (Everyone In This Family Has Killed Someone)
I love Ray Porter and his range is excellent, but as a dutch native: his dutch accent is so wrong it nearly killed my immersion 😀
this is a very good explanation about tbe dutch accent 🙂
https://youtube.com/shorts/1nrc4-QSuX0?si=SYCjpv2CxD_W2UqO
So, Jeff Hays in an immensely talented voice actor. I found him from the Dungeon crawler Carl series and he’s fabulous.
Off topic😊
Will we find out what Augustine really looks like?
MMMMMMMMMM…Pancakes!!!!
Happy New Year! All Hail the Great ModR for her giving ways!
Eddie Redmayne in The Day of the Jackal seems close to your wishes
Omg is that a SNOW LEOPARD TAIL sneaking in at the bottom of the frame??!?!
How did we ship that? I can’t remember?!
I only remember Panthercakes. Augustine is pancakes and Diana keeps panthers. Panthercakes!
I liked Iggy Toma in guild codex warped. There are a few important female voices and he did them very well.
The art is gorgeous btw
SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE…… *GASP*… EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE <3
Okay now for business:
A voice for Pancakes – I recommend Alex Knox. He's FANTASTIC. I know him from does the Arcane Casebook series and have shared a snippet with a coworker who swooned at just a few sentences.
Additional Suggestion:
I’m also listening to Luke Daniels read a book and I do keep mentally checking that its only a single narrator… this book is from 2013 so I don’t know if his voice has matured, however he was also the reader for the Iron Druid series that narrator alone didn’t hold me (so i haven’t listened recently) among others and so I haven’t listened to his recent recordings and he might have a very busy schedule.
Came here to recommend Luke daniels – he is a fantastic mimic and has a huge range (now just +1’ing)
Love this — I always think of Augustine as buttoned up — It is great to see him more casual….
David Bennett of Steam Powered Giraffe might work, or his twin sister Isabella. But that might give her dysphoria.
I know Steam Powered Giraffe! From the old days when my daughter was obsessed with them. 2012ish. We saw them several times live. Such a fun group.
Michael Kramer is my favorite narrator, I’m always amazed at his range of voices and accents.
Possibly out of budget, and I’m not sure he fits your checklist. However, the best voice actor I have ever had the pleasure of hearing is Matt Mercer. He’s _incredibly_ versatile! 😍
I was thinking Matt Mercer as well. He is amazing.
I agree, he has incredible range, and has TONS of practice with female voices. I mean, he speaks all NPCs in the 3 D&D campaigns, I especially like his Allura Vysoren.
James Masters
Do you mean James Marsters? I like his voice for augustine too
+1
I second James Marsters!
+1
Bronson Pinchot is one of the best at voicing many character types in one book (going toward the idea that Augustine changes all aspects when he does an illusion). He’d be amazing, but he’s probably booked up to 2035.
Oliver Wyman is great with multiple characters as well.
The guy who does Hugh in the Kate GAs is also really good. I don’t know what his name is, but he did show a multitude of levels throughout the series.
I have no suggestions for the Horde.
Happy New Year! Be safe everyone!
Pancakes…yum. 😁🍽
Happy birthday, Ilona! 🎂🎇
Love you Mod R, Happy New Year!
Sorry, no recommendations
I really like Holter Graham’s voice talents. I think he could do all that the Augustine character requires.
SO excited about having an Augustine POV story! I’m hoping it grows to novella length (at least).
HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Here’s hoping 2026 treats House Andrews and the BDH well!
Happy New Year!
I don’t know if he can do sophisticated or not, but I love Holter Graham’s acting. He’s my favorite male audiobook actor right now.
Robert Petcoff is an insanely good voice actor. He is likely older, but his range is just unbelievable. He can do different sexes, accents, vibes… He does all of Kresley Cole’s Immortals After Dark novels. He’s just amazing.
happy Birthday to Ilona! I never could quite picture Augustine, so this helps! oh, wow.
Kobra Holdbrook-Smith who does the Rivers of London audio books. He’s older but sounds younger, the main character is in his 30s. He does a fantastic range of voices and accents.
+1 He’s fantastic.
Here are my picks:
1. Robert Petkoff he is awesome. He does all of the Imortal Afternoon Dark Books by Kersley Cole and is really good.
2. Fred Berman is always a favorite
3. Steve West who did Hugh, he was supper awesome
Happy Birthday Ilona!
I don’t know that he is right for the way Augustine normally presents himself, but I love listening to Joel Richardson. He manages to find the emotion and humor in the characters and situations he reads. He even does subtle sarcasm well, which is definitely Augustine. Try Paladin’s Grace to hear him.
Happy New Year! 🎉
Thank you for the sneak peak and snippet and – yup – thanks!
Happy Birthday Ilona. And Happy New Year to everyone.
The fantastically versatile Travis Baldree is my favorite male narrator of all time, but he’s probably so booked out he’s not even a possibility.
Brian Hutchison is also amazing, as are Brian Sutherland (he may be older than you’re looking for at this point) and Holter Graham (his female voices are not as believable, though).
Happy Birthday, Ilona!😃🥰🌹🌾🌷🌼🌻🌺🪻🪷🏵🎉🎁🎈✨️
The men that come to mind who are actual voice actors are two:
1. Alan Tudyk
2. Mark Hamill
Hear me out,please- yes, out of the age range, but listening to them, one wouldn’t know it. They’ve done voice acting from *tiny* fan-run productions, to multi-million dollar animated films. Both are brilliant; both are extremely versatile. They both can do suave and
( sexy)sophisticated, as well as female voices, too. Just throwing it out there…😃
In any case~
Happy New Year, and Bright Blessings to HA, Mod R, and all the BDH- and may every day be Chalant!!
Alan Freaking Tudyk + infinity!!
That’s him except he needs dark hair.
Why? Augustine is blond.
Are you sure? I always thought that Augustine is anything he wants to be.
For the narrator: https://tantor.com/narrator/tor-thom.html
I have no suggestions. I’m just here to join in the Pancakes celebration. 🙂
Happy New Year, BDH!
Favorite hands down narrators for me is Jeff Hayes and RC Bray. Either can read the dictionary and I would listen to them. Jeff Hayes narrated the Dungeon Crawler Carl series and he does every voice. He has honestly ruined me on other audibles.
RC Bray most famously did the first narration of ‘Martian’ by Andy Weir and unfortunately the newest narration is by Will Wheaton (sorry Will). He also has a huge range from British voices, to Maine accent, to Southern drawls.
I love that art! Who made it?
The fabulously talented https://www.instagram.com/helena.illustrated/ , who also did the HL art for the Arcane Society box 🙂
ooh, thank you, ModR! Down the rabbit hole I go!
I have no recommendations and will enjoy who ever is chosen.
Thanks Mod R for sharing the yummy Augustine art!🤗
Happy New Year to all 🎆 and a Happy Birthday to Ilona! 🥳
Grover Gardner – he narrates the Penric novellas written by Lois McMaster Bujold.
Tom Hiddleston
Nick Podehl, he narrates tgeU S edition of Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss, but also a very busy voice actor. Travis Baldree would do a great job as well.
Kirby Heyborne who does the audio books of Fred, the Vampire!
I’m gonna flip the script here and say Justine Eyre. She narrates the Guild Hunter books and does amazing male voices (Raphael and Illium especially are my favorites). She can come off a tad nasally at times, but I do love her.
Alex Hill-Knight (Arland, GA Innkeeper books) would be another favorite.
Ahhh!!! I’m so excited for Augustine!! Thanks Mod R for sharing ❤️❤️
Thank you Mod R! That is Pancakes perfection to an order of magnitude.
Usually I think female moderators are better at voicing male characters, but I listen to a lot of audiobooks and will start listening in a different way now.
I do agree female narrators do male voices better than male narrators do female voices.
I saw the name Augustine and Pancakes come up and immediately thought of a little blue bird! Go look!
Andy Serkis did all the voices for Terry Pratchett’s SMALL GODS and I could have sworn each character was a different actor. But I’m sure he is far too expensive. And probably really busy. Ah well, you did ask 😉
Addendum: well, not Death or Footnotes, but everyone else!
I love Andrew Fallaize, He has done the recent Shadow of The Leviathan books.
Hot-cha-cha!! The person who lives in my mind is a bit leaner and slightly icy, but this version – va-voom!! 😏
Happy Birthday to Ilona!! May your day be happy and full of family!! 🎁🎂
I do not know any voiceover actors, but there has to be a perfect voice out there! Good luck and break legs!! 🎭
OMG OMG Eeeeeeeee!!!!! I’m so glad Augustine is getting a story! Love the pic! Augustine after a hard day at the office. Hehe.
Happy birthday and hope the mini break is great!
Happy New Year to the BDH (may we all find enjoyable ways to w*it), to Mod R (may we not try your p*tience) and to our wonderful HA (may the creative juices come in a flood of wonderful).
HNY!
Teddy Hamilton.. not sure of the female intonation but what a voice!
Still remember the first time I heard him.. WTH!!can a voice be described as smooth as chocolate and red wine? 😆😆
Steve West. I felt he did a great job narrating Hugh and Elara.
I really enjoyed listening to Philip Battley. He did the Elemental Trilogy series by Sherry Thomas. He definitely has a cultured voice and he did male and female characters. It was the first audiobook series I had ever listened to and I just felt he did an awesome job and added a lot to the story.
Kevin Free who does the Murderbot books is good. Like his female voices. Sounds about the right age.
Holy pancakes 🥞🤤🥵
Thr mighty Joe Jameson….his skills are too notch. He took “Boyfriend Material” to new heights
Love the illustration of Augustine!
And Michael Lesley is an amazing narrator.
Jeff Hays did a phenomenal job narrating Dungeon Crawler Carl & has a wide range of voices. He might be a great choice, but only if he has an amazing cultured voice…
Mmmm pancakes, love the art. So nice seeing him a bit more ruffled makes him so much tastier, I mean sweeter, I mean treasure, I mean, err…
Anyway, can’t help with the voice actor sorry but thanks for the news years treat
P.S can pancakes do dragon illusions aswell, Does he like dragons? Just wondered, not at all thinking of stealing him away to my dragon lair because of course I am not a dragon, and I do not steal handsome treasure and there smart, no nonsense female leads who are good with animals. I of course only eat pancakes that are made from batter, and I am a completely tame dragon, I mean human. Human that’s what I am, yes a perfectly normal human.
Now I’m going to make some blueberry pancakes and re-read HL series like a good dragon, I mean human should. Also look at the picture a few more times, for research, yes research.
Hmmmm pancakes
Happy New Year, my dear! Wishing you health, joy, and happiness.
I’m not up on voice actors, but it seems to me that Aussies have quite a bit of talent doing voices. That helps not at all, I know. Oh well.
Swoons.
Fans self.
Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Thank you, ModR, for the end of year gift!
You da best!
Happy Birthday, Ilona!
Happy New Year to you all!
May 2026 find you ALL safe, healthy and peaceful!
PS. No voice actor suggestions – but am sure that the best fit will be identified.
I have to admit, Augustine’s voice in the Graphic Audio books really is disappointing. It’s way too prissy and finicky. Kind of like what I’d imagine Sherlock Holmes’ brother, Mycroft, would sound like.
Ok I agree. Very smarmy
Holly Sh*t!!! THAT is what Augustine looks like in Ilona’s head? Her imagination far surpasses mine, obviously 🙄… Ahem…
Moving on, a great voice actor with a wide range of voices, including females, is Jeff Woodman. He voices the Lord John novels/novellas by Diana Gabaldon (parallel to Outlander). I think he is older than 30 but ticks all the other boxes.
Wait, what is this for? currently on the graphing audio version of White Hot and I already have an Augustine? (which I was not picturing like this, so thank you)
th new Augustine novella 🙂 https://ilona-andrews.com/blog/happy-holidays-5/
Hi!
I would highly recommend Liam DiCosimo
I absolutely love him.
Happy New Year to all!!
🥂🎆
Mike New has a great voice. Not sure if he can speak the female parts or not?
Happy New Years to the Horde! I agree with Augustine visuals, maybe older? But no recommendations for voice since I’m not an audio book person. However, it needs to be a bit “posh” for lack of a etter word.
voice artist Luke Daniels
I am unsure if he does audio books, but I enjoy Damien Hass’ voice acting in several different things. I also enjoy Kevin Fee’s narration of All Systems Red.
Damien Hass narrated “My happy Marriage” on audible with a partner.
I like Tim Campbell’s narration.
Love the pics … I think they fit my vision of Augustine very well! Yummy! I listen to audiobooks all the time, but no one in particular comes to mind as a good fit.
James Marsters He absolutely ruined audio books for me when he did the Dresden Files. Best voice I have EVER heard.
It the Graphic Audio Augustine. His voice is too smarmy
Auto correct kills me I wanted to write “Not”
Zachary Quinto
For something different, Jensen Ackles.
Luke Daniels is my favorite male narrator!
How about Jacob Morgan?
Wow.. this art is amazing. I did know how much I liked pancakes until this moment. Lol I don’t have recommendations, though, I know you’ll find the right person. Happy new year Mod R, HA (happy birthday!) and BDH!
He’s giving off Clark Kent vibes! Oohlala! Instead of lipstick on his collar he’s got blood.
Modr, you do know another name for pancakes is Hotcakes?! Lol, thanks for the visuals, can’t wait to hear this audio.
This has made me realize that when Augustine takes on a different appearance he must alter his voice to suit. This is a challenge in an audio book.
I’ve been summoned!
I will not fail the BDH, for I shall scour the internet for our beloved Panacakes, no socialmedia will be left unturn, all my favorite male narrators weighted and measured!
sorry I love audiobooks!
Tom Hiddleston. Yummy voice.
In my head I pictured him older than this image – but mid 30s
Three suggestions I have would be
Aiden Snow
Teddy Hamilton
Adam Gold
ALSO Kimberly Wetherell – her work narrating Lucy Connelly’s Scottish Isles mysteries is stellar – she does the male & female voices (along with American & Scottish accents).
Jeff Hays, the voice actor for the Dungeon Crawler Carl audiobooks, is unbelievably talented. You would swear that there is a whole cast of people reading, but it’s all him. His female characters are especially convincing. There are YouTube videos of him performing, otherwise I wouldn’t have believed it’s all him. Plus he’s really funny!
Well, I’m not sure it’s possible, but Ray Porter the guy who read Project Hail Mary is always the guy that I think when I think of really well done audiobooks. However, I would also add Steve West – his narration of Hugh’s book was AMAZING and I’m hoping that we get him for the next Hugh book. I will say that Hugh forever will sound like Steve West in my head (although Graphics Audio was great). However his switch between all the different characters were awesome. If looking for a female narrator, then I would say Emily Rankin – she was fabulous for the 2nd series of Hidden Legacy.
Augustine is a hottie! Who knew?
Arabella did.
Okay, this is going to sound nuts, but the reader with the absolute broadest range of voices I’ve ever heard is Jeff Hayes of Soundbooth Theater. He reads Dungeon Crawler Carl and makes the garbage writing of that book into something not just palatable, but wildly enjoyable.
Edoardo Ballerini is superb. Also +1 to those recommending Ray Porter.
Jeff Woodman – amazingly talented actor and winner of Audie Award and many others.
James Marsters – listen to Dresden files.
+1
Jeff Hays!! He does so many voices and amazing female voices.
Kevin R Free, who reads the murderbot Diaries, does a wide range of voices and does sarcasm well.
Cat Blackard (https://m.imdb.com/name/nm8864486/) is a great voice actor with a very impressive range
Ian Ferguson is an actor I know from the Midnight Burger narrative podcast, have heard him in several roles on the show doing a beautiful job and the right tenor of voice, I think!
if it weren’t for the need to have them to be able to do female voices i would say jensen ackles
And maybe he can! He seems very versatile.
I am so happy that you are looking for voice actor specifically for Augustine! I apologize for not having any ideas, but I am going to run through all the audio books that I can find. I think Augustine should have a lower range cultured voice. I look forward to hearing who you decide on!
I am very hopeful there will soon be a new Hidden Legacy – Arabella’s story. I am also very interested in what may be happening between Augustine and Diana Harrison.
OMG, I’m just besotted with that art of Augustine. Who would have thought he’d be the one for me…? Good luck with the voice actor search.
have you guys considered Jeff Hays from soundbooth theater? DCC is one of my fav audios, and love his range.
I enjoy Alex Knox for his range and attention to detail.
This must be a cookbook ‘cause Pancakes be cooking!! Not quite the mental picture I had in made up as I read but he fits!
I love PJ Ochlan and he does a good female voice.
Also, EEP, my Ferret Heist and Chalant t-shirts arrived all the way in Oz yesterday, just in time for NYE!
I had a clear, three step reaction to this visual motivation:
Wait a sec, Augustine does rumpled?
He‘s THE illusion Prime. Of course Augustine can do rumpled!
Wow. Augustine. Does. Rumpled.
Thanks for that, ModR – and artist Helena Elias. As though I wasn’t already eagerly awaiting the novella before this treat.
Happy Birthday Ilona! And best wishes for this brand new (Maggie!) year to ModR, HA and the entirety of the wonderfully crazy, cozy, and chalant BDH!
+1000 to this. I had never pictured Augustine rumpled before tonight. But OF COURSE. And now this image is seared in brain forever, and I can’t complain.
Me too. I always think of the perfect suited Prime, but he does get around.
Rumpled is the better word +1
Happy birthday Ilona! Happy new year to all!
No recs, I think there’s already a great selection mentioned here.
Happy birthday to Ilona and Happy New Year to the Horde 🎊🎉🎊
hope you all have a very happy 2026
My favorite for a range of voices is Marc Thompson, he’s INSANELY good, but probably usually booked by Star Wars novels unfortunately.
But – INSANELY. GOOD.
James Marsters who does the Dresden Files is what I could imagine, but I guess he is too expensive? Too well known?
One reason I thought of him:
As Augustine can impersonate… JM can do e.g. British accents too (see Spike in Buffy) and also in general different voices
A *disheveled* Augustine?!!!
~swoon~
SIMPLY GORGEOUS! HAPPY NEW YEAR! WHAT A WONDERFUL WAY TO START 2026! HAPPY BIRTHDAY ILONA! Enjoy your special day!
Yum! Great image too. Can’t wait for his book! 🌹
Oh, yes, Happy Birthday, Ilona! I hope you had a great one. And happy sales for the New Year!
AK
I’ve already seen Matthew Mercer mentioned. Based on the parts I have heard him play, I think Taliesin Jaffe could also be a good fit for Augustine.
He looks like Brad Pitt. Anyone know someone who sounds like Brad Pitt?
…and no gift basket!!Ummm….Brad Pitt?
Jeff Hayes is the best voice actor I’ve ever heard. he does the dungeon crawler Carl books. You’d never believe it was all one person.
Graham Halstead, perhaps? https://grahamhalstead.com/audiobooks.html
For a female narrator, I’m always amazed by the range of accents and voices from Mary Jane Wells. You can get a sense of the range from the 5-minute sample (not the Preview) in https://www.audible.com/search?keywords=Mary+Jane+Wells+Anima+Rising&k=Mary+Jane+Wells+Anima+Rising
Maybe Holter Graham? I am listening to Patricia Briggs alpha and omega books and just yesterday I was thinking, “wait was there a female narrator also?” I couldn’t remember, but then realized it was just him. His voice is really pleasant to listen to and I get lost on the story instead of trying to figure out some words or if it is too soft, which happens a lot in books where the male is harder to understand.
Robert Petkoff. Best known for his performance as Zidler in Moulin Rouge. But he’s also narrated Kresley Coles entire Immortals After Dark series.
Luke Daniels – I’ve been listening to him do amazing range of accents and personalities in the Iron Druid and Ink & Sigil series – he is amazing!
Happy New Year to the Andrews family!
Years ago you mentioned a book by Forthright. Her audio reader is Travis Baldree. He now has an excellent cozy fantasy series out too. IMO, he’s a very good narrator
Wow, finding a good mimic for Augustine seems like it will be a challenge. The level of thought and consideration is just another reason why the BDH loves House Andrew’s.
I’d like to hear Jon Vertullo as Augustine. I’m sure his Pancakes would be delicious. 😁
Jeff Hayes. This is not Jeff’s usual genre, but he is so versatile at different voices (including multiple, distinct women in the same book) that he’s ruined all other single narrator audiobooks for me.
I am familiar with Jeff’s work from the Dungeon Crawler Carl series.
So he’s older than what you are asking, but he is amazingly talented, and does all of the Dresden Files (youngish male lead) and all of the female voices etc. SUPER Talented actor
James Marsters
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Marsters
uh oh if buffy lovers and BDH collide lol
Luke Daniels – his range of narration in Kevin Hearne’s Iron Druid series is spectacular.
🎉Happy New Year!🎊
🎂Happy Birthday!🎈
Roger Wayne – listen to a snippet from Charming by Elliott James
oooh…oh my, Pancakes! Who did that incredible artwork? Unfortunately, I haven’t listened to as many books as I’ve read, so I don’t have an opinion for a voice actor. I do agree that the voice of Augustine in the GA adaptations was not as I would have pictured him. It was a little jarring. However, I adore the GA adaptations, and still would not hesitate to purchase a HA audiobook from them. Have been re-visiting the GA Innkeeper books on car rides with my spouse. He loves them too!
yes, I kept thinking it was Ghastek from Kate Daniels. Who I think sounds exactly right, but it’s not the way I imagined Montgomery. It was the way he spoke more than the way the voice sounded. I think Pancakes would be very precise and not hurried at all, maybe with a hint of a smirk. Like Glen Powell, smirk face guy.
+ 1
Travis Baldree? lol I wish, he’s too busy though, I think his list is like 3 years.
Nick Podehl did a good job with King’s Dark Tidings and Jeff Hays is amazing with Dungeon Crawler Carl.
Love the picture, though I find it highly unlikely that Augustine would go out in public looking all bloody like that when it is simple enough for him to hide it. Can’t wait for the story! Sadly, not having listened to a lot of audio books, I can’t make voice recommendations.
I’ve been amazed with Chris Andrew Ciulla. Not a super young voice, but not an old rasp, either, although he can “do” both. And welcome to 2026…
So this rec may be a bit out of left field & I don’t know if he has the voices range you need, but perhaps investigate Peaches? I just discovered him on IG & I think he at least has a great male voice: @peaches_aka_goochypie ; https://www.just-peaches.com/about .
James Patrick Cronin
Regé-Jean Page (From Bridgerton Season 1)
But I’ve never listened to an audiobook.
I’d suggest checking out Eric Fox at ericfoxvox.com. He’s read a few books I liked and did a great job with male and female characters. Two that come to mind are Juniper Bean Resorts to Murder and Of Silver and Shadow.
Happy New Year to the Andrews Gang, Mod R, and the BDH! Love this snippet!
Well, he’s outside the age range, but James Marsters does amazing work for Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files series. Also- Happy birthday to Ilona and Happy New Year to the Horde!
I don’t listen to audiobooks (I’m unable to listen without taking notes which quite defeats the purpose of audiobooks) but I think I might make an exception for this one…
Thank you for sharing the absolutely yummy Pancakes, rumpled is a look that works better than Greek god in my humble opinion. I’m totally ace but that pic almost allows me to understand sex-appeal… enough that I’m going to save it in my gallery
Sharing is caring and you obviously care very much for us all
Happy new year to everyone and happy birthday to Ilona (hope it’s not too late for those wishes)
luke Daniel’s does the Iron Druid series. I have always been impressed with his range. For voice actors, Sam Reigel and Mathew Mercer are incredible at female and male voices. I’d love to hear Matt as Augustine!!!
Now I have an image stuck in my head of Nott the Braves voice coming out of Augustines mouth 🤣
While not meeting every requirement, a friend of mine is an accomplished voice actor (& regular actor & author as well). He has narrated many authors books, including his own with both a male and female lead.
Nick Sullivan is his name
For a snippet of his voices. check out his The Deep series of books
D.C. Cole
Jonathan Davis
I know you’re probably looking for a man, and I don’t know if she’d even be willing to read a book narrated in a mostly male voice, but Lorelei King reads Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum novels, and I swear she’s even better than the one audiobook I paid extra for because it had different readers for different characters. She’s British, but her American accents, even for different regions of the country, are spot on. Good luck! I listen to audiobooks while driving on long trips and while doing housework or working out—it really helps get me through monotonous tasks!
Jeff Hays. That man would be PERFECT.
I highly doubt he’d be available but…. Dungeon Crawler Carl anyone!?
I do like Jeff Hays for the range of voices, he really sounds completely distinct. Good female voices and ranges in different female voices as well. been listening to him on the dungeon crawler carl deries. don’t know if that’s the sound you are going for tho.
also maybe Joel Richards! he did a bunch of T kingfisher stuff, especially the saint of steel series
Swoon! Happy new year indeed!
Jeff Hayes. Amazing range of voices, and my flabbers were fasted when I found out he’s the sole narrator of the Dungeon Crawler Carl books. He’s with Soundbooth Theater.
I’m shipping panella.
Jacob Morgan
Tavia Gilbert. She does impeccable male voices and I think she’d nail that specific description of Augustine. I’m sure Jeaniene Frost would be willing to share. 😉
Happy New Year!
I don’t know if he can do sophisticated or not, but I love Holter Graham’s acting. He’s my favorite male audiobook actor right now.
Thank you for the gift. I’m excited. 😁
Holter Graham does a great job narrating, among others, the Patricia Briggs Alpha & Omega books. I see that he is in his early 50s, but he doesn’t sound old (LOL – I’m older than that).
anyone else think Pancakes here looks like Simon LeBon?? Just me?
wait is that OG Augustine or Augustine streamlined/altered Augustine!!
either way very nice, but so curious lol
How about Jeff Hayes? He seems very versatile. You can find reels and longer interviews on YouTube for his multiple voices from Dungeon Crawler Carl.
Benedict Cumberbatch
Dumb question here but…in which book does one meet Augustine?
I have obviousky not been keeping up with things 😔
In Burn for Me, the first in the Hidden Legacy series https://ilona-andrews.com/hidden-legacy-books/#burn
It’s a fab adventure!
Thank you! Going for it now….
I think it would be very close to Ghastek’s voice as done by Graphic Audio.
I’ve really liked listening to Andrew Tell – he does a fantastic job with a wide range of voices.
Okay so I know this voice actor from his JAFF narrations so a bit off the beaten path here but Harry Frost does an amazing Mr Darcy (and also Mr Bingley and Lydia and Mrs Bennet—you get my drift). Would definitely recommend.
Right, well he isn’t available, but Robin Williams would have been amazing intact role.
I’ve been looking through my audible catalogue, and didn’t realize how many male narrators have good diversity of masculine voices but not so much for feminine.
Travis Baldree is one of my faves though I wonder how available he is at the moment.
I’ve seen people mention Jeff Hayes and Nick Podehl and I agree with them.
I’ve read a lot of Rachel Aaron so I’ll throw in Vikas Adams, narrator of her Heartstrikers series, and Nicholas Cain who did her Tear Down Heaven series.
I love the art. I’m sort of biased now because I’ve been listening to GA. But when I think cultured, I think Richard Rohan, Gabriel Michael, Rayner Gabriel, or Michael Glenn. Hm or Rob Moreira. Outside of GA, I’m not familiar with a lot of Voice Actors. I’m sure whoever you find will be awesome and I love surprises. 🙂
Tom Hiddlestone or David Tenant – both do a good US accent
Forgot to add, not sure how any of them would do with female voices however.
Fred Berman performs the Unconventional Heroes series by L.G. Estrella (2 Necromancers and…) He has to do a large ensemble and does good snobbish and cultured male and female voices (James and Amanda and other side characters), tho those voices may not show up in the samples provided by Audible.
Hi There,
here is a narrator I really enjoy listing to, and keeps in character when doing both male and female.
Joel Leslie
https://tantor.com/narrator/joel-leslie.html
Laura
Nathaniel Priestly narrated K. M. Shea’s King Arthur and Her Knights, and I was impressed by his range, especially when voicing a female protagonist. He also fits the regal/refined criteria, and the ability to flex between accents.
Also, I know Alex Hill Knight is already Arland, but after the exposition that Augustine hides his true size, I have always pictured the character as Arland adjacent? And Hill Knight’s voice is stunning.
I’ve had a look through my audio book list –
Travis Baldree (flattered by flowers forthright)
Noah Michael Levine (robin d owens heart mate)
James Fouhey (only bad options Jennifer estep)
Alister Austin (magic unleasehed km shea)
And Happy New Year. I made the post before I realised all the other comments!
Robert Petkoff definitely!!
He has a very clear and neutral voice but manages to change character both dramatically (into much deeper tones and various accents) and also give the illusion of a completely different person by very subtle changes in his voice. In my opinion, he would be perfect.
I do have a couple of recommendations for a voice. Not sure how you would connect up with them.
There is an a cappella group called VoicePlay. They have a base singer who has a 5 octave range. He has published several read books on YouTube. His name is Geoff Castellucci. He has a fantastic base voice but can sing in the higher ranges as well so he can modulate his voice.
The other recommendation is Eli Jacobsen. He is a voice actor and ranges from tenor to alto. He also has a 5 octave range.
Both would be fantastic in your book readings.
If you do nothing else, check out VoicePlay’s music. I suggest starting with their version of Wicked, but they cover several genres so if Wicked is not your thing, browse them on Facebook or YouTube.
ooh…love the sneaky chase-in of augustine being arabella’s mentor…..can’t wait to read more……
I think Joe Arden would also be a good choice!
hi. I think Grant Cartwright would be perfect for Augustine. he is the male voice actor for the Section 47 series by Jennifer Estep. he has the perfect mix of sly sophistication.
Zoe Black audio book narrator. I bought a book he narrated and could imagine him as Augustine. He might be new to the field , so maybe more easy to book. Thanks for giving Augustine a face!
“It would have been bad for business.” Hmmmmm…That’s not actually an answer to the question.
I’m going to have to push Travis Baldree, here. He’s the voice of the Cradle audiobooks, and his range is incredible. Plus, I hear he’s a dream to work with, and his hair has volume and definition. How could one resist?
https://www.travisbaldree.com/
I cannot recommend Kyle McCarley enough. He’s an amazing narrator. He did a series I love with at least 40 different significant characters, and I could *tell who was talking without dialog tags*. That’s how different the voices were! He does women well, too.
Extra bonus, he keeps voice clips in an excel sheet so that if he does more than one book in a series, he remembers what all the characters sound like! It’s a pet peeve of mine when characters change voices between books, and I was so impressed to learn he takes responsibility to keep that from happening.
I’m super excited for the Augustine “novella”!
Matthew Wolf! He narrated the House Witch trilogy for Delemhach and Recipes for an Unexpected Afterlife for Deston J. Munden.
Happy New Year
You might try Michael Kramer he does a few different female and male voices in Shadows of Self by Brandon Sanderson.
Greg Boureaux – great at male and female voices.
Jeffrey Kafer. Great vocal range.
Has anyone mentioned Joel Leslie/Froomkin?
For his full range I would suggest the Hidden Species by Louisa Masters or a sampling of Cat Sebastian books. His accents are awesome and he has impressive vocal range.
I already saw Greg Trembley mentioned.
Iggy Toma might fit, too.
I am watching Colin Ryan running through FFXIV on YouTube. He records it live on twitch first. He is a professional voice actor and is very versatile.
On his run through, he is voicing all the dialog and some times the voice is not human. His child and female voices are very believable.
However, he is a very busy man. He acts, he does voice overs for video games and movies, as well as international activities.
I mention him only because while I watched him on YouTube, my first thought was of audio reading of any of Andrew’s books.
Forgot to mention his youtube channel is ‘iamalphinaud”
Alphinaud is the name of the NPC he does the voice for in FFXIV from Heavensward on.
Happy New Year!
I suggest Tom Taylorson as an outstanding performer.
I’ve been listening to him perform the Good Boys trilogy by Jeremy Robinson (very good, especially for dog lovers) and holy moly, his character work is fantastic! I’ll be looking at other series he’s done because I want to hear more of him.
Gary Furlong is one of my favorites. He’s spectacular with accents and really good at voicing women too. He narrated an epic fantasy with huge cast and I was pretty blown away.
Happy New Year!
Alex Hill-Knight. He was Michael in Book 11 of the Demon Days Vampire Night series.
He was so smooth and aristocratic, I had to stop listening and look up who he was.
Hi! The Voice actors who come to mind are:
Gareth David-Lloyd and Claudia Black. They complement each other, and I suspect they are also part of the BDH. Maybe.
Travis Baldree. He does the litrpg that I read and he is amazing. He is also prabably fully booked! I listen to two of the series that he narrates. Each one has a large cast of characters and they are both unique. Absolutely love him,
Jeff Hayes! His range is amazing – the first time I heard him, I thought it was a full cast.
Are those “pancakes” graphics available in print…or desktop wallpaper? Not even close to being a teenager, but those are defientely bedroom poster material.
I’m a little late to comment and have no input on a voice actor. That said, I clearly have a type. Augustine is my favorite HL character and this artwork reminds me of Percy in Legend of Vox Machina, who is also my favorite.
I am a wee bit late as well, but I want to put in a vote for Aaron Shedlock, who can do basically any voice, has voiced several of my fave characters. Highly, highly recommend.
Danny Montooth is great.
My recommendation: Alex Knox. I think I’ve only heard him do the Arcane Casebook series, but I’ve thought his female voices were very good.
Haven’t listened to any new audiobooks this year so I’ll have to pass on recommendations, however, I am so curious to see who will land Pancakes
An excellent voice actor is J. Michael Tatum. He has done numerous Anime characters. I don’t know if he can voice a female, but he is worth a try. He voice sounds suave and sophisticated just as I imaging Augustine’s voice would be. Don’t know if he does a Southern Texas accent.
When I visualize Augustine of Hidden Legacy fame, his voice and speech patterns are very precise and a bit changeable to fit his moods and/or business situations. He can be cordial, chilly, smooth, snobby and oh so many things to match his illusion skills. Perhaps the voice actor that portrayed George Camarine in the Graphic Audio InnKeeper series could do Augustine justice.
James Fouhey/Cavenaugh!!!! Very regal. Or Aaron Shedlock but he might be a little too growly.
Connor Crais can do a very clear, crisp dictation that sounds educated (and dangerous) – for flavour, he narrates Alistair in the Brutes of Bristlebrook series from Rebecca Quinn. I’m not sure I’ve heard him narrate a female role though.
I’ve heard really good things about Rex Rhys (has narrated for Sierra Simone). He seems kind of new to the scene and he’s mostly worked with dual narration, so not sure about his female voice, but he could have a more open schedule than some people in high demand. Good luck!
I enjoy listening to Susan Erickson when she narrates . She reads the In Death series and has some good voices. Happy New Year( yes, I am a bit late).
🎶 Your pancakes bring all the girls to the yard 🎶
What about the guy who did Dungeon Crawler Carl?
Jeff Hayes runs Soundbooth Theater. Not sure what the licensing would end up looking like.
Sorry to have taken so long to get back to this but I needed to scan various audios to be sure. After my research I can strongly recommend Kyle McCarley, who has voiced Drew Hayes’ “Superpowered” series. He does both male and female voices very well and in a variety of both accents and styles in each gender. I’ve listened to this series several times and have never had difficulty distinguishing each individual character. I hope this helps.
Swoooonnnn!!! I will give this some thought. Can’t think of anyone in the age group off hand. What about a celebrity? Since I don’t listen to much YA, I am stuck. I’ll think on it. The voices are very important to me cuz I dig audio. Happy NY. And congrats on the engagement.
I never thought Pancakes would be swoon worthy. He’s such a pretentious prick.. yet that artist..
Michael Leslie is incredible at distinct voices.
Fred Burman ( voice)
“Two necromancers a bureaucrat and an elf”
By LG Estrella
Great book
when is the book du?
Around the end of January for the epub, slightly later for audiobook 🙂
Fluffy the comedian does amazing voice work for both male and female characters.
I love Heath Miller!!
I’m not sure how it all works, but the narrator for Dungeon Crawler Carl is an absolute beast when it comes to mixing gender voices in scenes. So much so that people genuinely thought there were uncredited female narrators!
The comment of “It would have been very bad for business” cemented it for me . . . THAT line was delivered by James Spader.
Not one fluffy little thought in my noggin
Hello and good day to you. It may be too late to offer voice actor suggestions. If not, I humbly suggest Robbie Daymond or LiamO’Brien.
James Fouhey who does the voice for Kyrion Caldaren in Jennifer Estes’s Galactic Bonds series
