In an effort to clarify things, here are the many editions of This Kingdom. Some of you will be seeing several of these on sales at your preferred retailers. We are just trying to help you make sense of them.

Tor US Hardcover: teal edges.

The US Tor edition, available primarily in the US. Some EU readers will also see this as available in their markets, but it will be coming from the US.

Tor UK Hardcover: darker image, painted edges with flower pattern.

Tor UK Hardcover, which originated in UK and is distributed accordingly.

Waterstones Hardcover Edition: we are over the moon happy to share this incredible dark cover edition, with gilded sprayed edges.

Exclusive Waterstones edition, also originating in UK, that will be signed.

There are two other special editions that are US centered and will have their own edge treatment, special art, and fanciness. More on that when we have permission.

Translations:

To date, This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me has sold to publishers in France, Germany, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, Ukraine, and Slovenia. We will tell you more when we can. The translations will come out later than the English versions, because it takes longer to get the manuscript translated. I can tell you that we have seen some things from France and Germany, and the editions promise to be beautiful.

    • I’ll be keeping an eye out for the Spanish version. I bought the first three books of Hidden Legacy and loved them. Are there any more books planned for translation?

      I know the edges don’t change the story, but those Waterstone ones are gorgeous and really make me want that one! 😄

    • I was convinced Canada had the Waterstones chain for some reason 😅 I know for sure they ship!

      • Amazon Canada show the hardcover with plain teal edges, so I guess it is carrying the Tor US edition.

        Waterstones does have a Canadian branch – google Waterstones Canada. It carries both signed and unsigned editions apparently – both for 22GBP.

        Shipping to Canada from the UK is free for orders over 25GBP or else is 2.99GBP for orders below that. Since the book seems to be 22GBP, a Canadian buyer can either find something else for 3GBP and get free shipping or else pay 3GBP shipping…

        • Drat!

          The “free shipping over 25GBP or else 2.99GBP” was just within the UK. I just pre-ordered the Signed Edition, and shipping to Canada is going to be 13.65GBP. So about 40GBP total.

          Nice book though – looking forward to receiving it.

          • Shipping to Australia is 18 pounds (plus the 22 pounds for the book), still worth it though (we’re used to high shipping costs here 🙂)

  11. I ordered the US version with the extra swag. I assume it will be teal but I adore the UK painted flower edges. All of the are so pretty!!

  12. I won’t splurge on merch, but I will splurge on one of the gorgeous hardcover editions with sprayed edges. Shame on the taxes from Uk to Germany! But I want, want, waaaaaant – there’s another four letter word for the hordlexicon…

    • I like the sprayed and the painted edges the same, so I’m quite happy that you get the painted one from buch7.de, that makes it easy to decide and no additional taxes 😉

      • I wanted the signed version, so I ordered from the UK. With shipping and taxes it came out at about 40€, which is expensive but worth it for a special edition in my opinion. I’m not a fan of translations and it will probably be difficult to get a signed version in Germany otherwise. However, buying the special edition (without signature) from a German site is smart!

  13. Ooooooooooohhhhhh, sprayed floral edges! 😍💕💕💕 Can I just say how much self-restraint and chalantness I am currently practicing NOT to immediately cancel my pre-order of the US hardcover and order a UK version?!!

    I will instead try to be very p*tient and w*it to see what the US special versions look like! But they are all so pretty, and knowing what awaits inside all of them….perfection!!!!!

    • I’m so excited that Eastern European publishers are getting more open to the books and having own editions! One day I’ll be able to buy them for my mother in Romania!

    Because if that’s the case I will buy the ebook for now and w**t to buy a physical exemplar

    Until then I’ll get my isekai fix from tapas and webtoon 😉

    • We can confirm that at least one US special edition will have bonus content, yes 🙂 . A reminder that the bonus content is not crucial to understanding the story and it is exactly what it says – an extra 🙂

  16. I saw the Waterstones post on IG but can’t seem to find it again. They had put up a deadline for pre-orders – Mod R, do you know when the deadline was? I’m debating preordering now vs. waiting to see how the US special editions editions look…

      There is no deadline – I’m wondering if maybe you’re confusing it with the release date for this edition – April 2nd? You can also check the Waterstones preorder page I linked directly above, the only “restriction” I see is that it’s only one signed edition per customer 🙂

    I’m still hoping for a technomancer finish some day. That poor heroine needs to make it out of captivity in my head.

    I have no room for books so I’m keeping my pre-order on my Kindle as much as I loathe Amazon and am counting down the days. Is it March yet?

      The last paragraph of the article deals with all the other European countries who are putting out editions so far 🙂.

      If you want an English language copy, then yes, the UK editions would be the ones to go for.

        I read the description page on the Waterstones website, if I understood correctly the edition has decorated edges, is signed, but there are no illustrations and/or extras, right?

  22. Wow, those are some gorgeous UK editions. I rarely read paper books, and I already ordered from my local bookstore, but uh yeah….

    For anyone who needs to know, it’s about $50 total for the book and shipping from Waterstones to California.

    • UK and US hardcovers on the 31st of March. The Waterstones signed 2 days later, on the 2nd of April.

      Translations a bit later and I cannot yet confirm anything about the special boxes 🙂

  24. TOR is taking SUCH excellent care of you and this book. It is so deserved, and I am over the moon excited to see the special editions coming our way in the U.S…. having trouble not pre-ordering and overpaying for the gorgeous U.K. editions but I will be p*tient.

    Normally I like it better, because it’s lighter then hardback but style have the same style.

  27. Oh my goodness the UK version with the flowers is soooo pretty! I really might consider buying it, depending on the shipping costs to Italy, even if I usually read HA books in ebook format

  29. The Hedge Hog is Cuute, I’ve seen a green flash sunset once over the Pacific when we had a very clear day, and we do have some lavenderish sunsets, (but they are usually cause by smoke particulates).

    I just hope the US editions aren’t as gorgeous or I may end up having to buy multiple copies (on top of the audiobook I’ve already ordered lol)

I know you are swamped but some time ago you shared what you were listening to while writing and I enjoyed finding the music and listening. I can’t find the original blog. PS I am a long time member of the BDH and am looking forward to Maggie. And to an Augustine novella. I listened to Sanctuary several times over the holidays – such a wonderful novella and moving backstory for a favorite Kate Daniels character. Your books make me happy, sad,and thoughtful.   42. I LOVE the UK hardcover! I’m from Poland so maybe I’ll buy the UK one later, I have the ebook pre-ordered :-). It’s great that it will be translated! I read in english and prefer it that way as I hate translations but my mom reads in polish only. I’ve introduced her to your books and she’s become a fan as well. She’ll be thrilled to be able to read it!

  45. I’m not usually one who cares much about cover art, but the darker background totally changes the look. Badass!
    Luckily for me I tend to read digital anyway, so switching the image is totally viable.

    The covers are so great! I love the UK waterstones version with the cool edges. I’ve already pre-ordered the ebook (had to go search to see who I ordered it from to make sure I really had!).
    I’m w**ting not so p*tiently to hear about other US cool versions, before I buy a hardcover edition!

  52. I haven’t done a hardcopy book in years, but I just had to pull the trigger on that UK Waterstones version. What with the darker cover the stunning edges and signing, simply couldn’t pass it up. As ever thrilled with the success y’all are having, but not at all surprised. Will always get my Audible, but really excited to get this hard copy! My shelves are so limited for super special hard backs, this one deserves its space. What wonderful treatment this is receiving!

  59. Oh so looking forward to the special US edition! As soon as that info is released, I’ll call my local bookstore to swap my preorder over 🙂 They said once they have an ISBN it should be simple to do.

    Fingers crossed the special editions will also be sent through to those bookstores that had the preorder packages? Otherwise I’ll have to pick between a pretty book and supporting my local bookstore

  60. I have a question about isekai format. I’ve only read one, and I was rooting for her to escape back to her original life the whole book. That did not happen, it was a big twist in the last scene with the resolution coming in the next book.
    Do characters ever go back to their normal life? Do they always make a new life for themselves in the story? Have to read Maggie and Maggie 2 to find out?

    • Isekai is an entire subgenre, so there isn’t really an “always” one way or the other, because authors will write different stories with different endings 🙂. It’s like asking “does the girl always end up with the werewolf?”

      We definitely need to w*it and read Maggie, yes! 🤪

    • Bookcase as wine cellar: YES!!! (Although in the spirit of the article, I’ll clarify that the original quote described the books themselves as the wine cellar.)

      My lifetime wine consumption (traditional champagne toasts excluded) totals less than two liters, sangria included. But I’ve read enough about wine to approve this metaphor. By this standard, my wine cellars are extensive enough to serve as the setting for a decent mystery/crime novel or work of speculative fiction.

    • No 🙂 Maggie is an American heroine and the book is in first-person, it would not make sense for her to speak in British English.

I almost exclusively read ebooks but these are all so beautiful I was inspired to check and see if I could borrow a copy from my library when the time comes.. and my tiny local library already has 2 copies on order! This book is gonna be huge. Big thank you to Tor for increasing the broader visibility of my favorite authors.

  72. Damn. I really love the darker UK versions, but alas, living in the US, you just can’t get there from here these days. Still, the turquoise page ends are pretty. I am so excited for this book to come out. Even more exciting: I am finally in my own place again after many years and am going to start buying *physical* books again! Woo hoo! This book might not only be my first new hardcover book in over a decade but my first new physical book in almost that long.

    • There is the main U.K. hardcover, with different side edges 🙂, and the U.K. paperback.

      I cannot yet confirm anything on the special book boxes editions.

  76. I saw the pictures before I read the transcript and my first thought was ‘ooh I like the second version with the darker tones and edge’.
    Then I realised it was the British version and they went darker cos…. I guess it matches our weather so we feel more at home??

Hey guys, I just wanted to alert you to the fact that I was sent a notice that the Kindle version of this book is available for $0.00 on Amazon and I went there and purchased it to see if that was really true. I don’t think you want to be selling me that book for zero dollars and I’m happy to pay what you need. But I wanted to let you know that I got that from Amazon. Sorry if that’s bad news.
