  9. This was interesting. Thanks for posting it! I’ve wondered how I would like audiobooks, and I’m glad I tried it. I’m going to stick with books and ebooks. The audio just doesn’t work for me, but it’s great that it does for many people.

    • Same here. It’s interesting but not my cup of tea. I think I relate better to books when I manually read them. My inner voices outvoiced the audio reader. It sounds great though for those that prefer audio books or audible.

    • I never thought I’d like audio books, but when that was the only option from my library (the book was in the middle of a series and I didn’t want to skip it) I gave it a shot. I didn’t realize before that you could speed up or slow down the narration. That probably sounds dumb to people familiar with audio, but I didn’t know that. Once I sped it up, I liked it a lot better! I don’t know if that helps you, but thought I’d share, just in case it does. ?

    • Audio is great for things like knitting while you listen, or cleaning the kitchen, or gardening, or the long commute. So you can listen and then go back to reading when the chores are done.

      I have become a big fan of audio books. I always listen to a free excerpt first because sometimes I don’t like the narrator, and that can kill the joy.

      The libraries have free audio books to check out so you can start there to try them. Most cell phones are capable of taking that down load so no $$ out of pocket.

      • … and driving too! IA audiobooks are really great if you listen in the car radio (using Bluetooth) when stuck in slow California traffic.

    • It depends a lot on whether the particular narrator works for you. Some people love certain narrators, while those same narrators drive other listeners crazy. I normally prefer to read, but I’ve listened to audiobooks on long cross-country drives, and it was great.

      I read the book first and I prefer that, but I do love a good audio book rendition. I’ve got lots of time in the car for yet another year before retiring and they keep me from flipping out with road rage, frankly. And I listen while mowing, cleaning, exercising, etc. And yes, as another person mentioned, I’ve learned the hard way to listen to an excerpt first. I found a couple audio books of novels I really enjoyed years ago and I literally can’t listen to them, the reading is so dead and the voice is just so…..annoying.

      I turned an old phone that could take a 128gb micro card into my mp3 player and made the effort to download all my old cd audio books to the computer (must turn them into mp3 files first and then often have to clean up the meta tags as well) and then to the card. Fortunately the new mp3 cds and mp3 downloads require little to make the transfer, cutting the work by easily 99%. I go nowhere without that old phone and my lovely bluetooth earbuds (but pack an extra wired set, too – you never know exactly when the little devils will run out of juice). I’ve only got 49gb left, that’s how much I love audio books. I do love technology when it works the way you want it to.

    • I so agree with you. I’ve never found a narrator who shows the sheer scope of talent RR demonstrates creating a unique voice for each character. She’s the reason I got into audiobooks plus the whole world of IA through Kate Daniels. I’d never been fond of the UF genre and yet her incredibly rich vocal characterizations had KD et al leaping off the page and into my world. To this day, listening to her audios brings beloved friends so alive and back into my life for a visit.

        Your comment sounds like it might have come from me. She’s what got me started on audio books with Kate Daniels and then the rest of the IA books. I’m so grateful she was their narrator for so long.

    • Try some books with Barbara Rosenblat as narrator. She does an amazing job of making every character’s voice individual – and recognizable for long series of books at that. I ran into her first doing the Elizabeth Peters’ Amelia Peabody mysteries. Now I look for her work in the genres I enjoy reading.

      • Absolutely second Barbara Rosenblat as a terrific narrator. When I first heard her I almost didn’t believe she was doing the men’s voices.

    On the one hand, I have real cognitive issues with audiobooks. On the other hand, is this a NEW snippet? I know we’re at R-3 weeks, but if it’s a NEW snippet, I think I might try to deal.

  22. I am so happy! I loved the narrator. I quilt and listening to audio books when I am doing handwork in so nice. I listened to the Other series by Anne Bishop (after having already read them) and enjoyed them tremendously, So in anticipation of Sapphire Flames I bought the audio version of the version of Burn for Me a couple of months ago and was going to listen to the series (Of course I have already read the books) and just did not like it. None of the characters sounded like I envisioned them in my head when I read the books. So I am really excited about this narrator. I have not listened to the Kate Daniels books but since several of you have and liked the narrator I will give that a try.

    I can not wait for Sapphire Flames to drop on my Kindle. I will be back teaching history at my community college so I will have to be patient until I get home. I will not set an alarm early and read until time to go to work because the last time I did that … I barely made it to class at 8:00 am. I looked like one of my students walking in to class going its not 8:02… nope!

  23. The reader is really good. Thank goodness no ‘breathy’ sound to be heard. Can’t wait for publication day!
    Hope everything at home is coming together and a resolution is found for your daughter’s headaches.

  25. Audiobook has been preordered since forever… Looking forward to release date more than my birthday ! And as I have been re-reading and re- listening the whole series while waiting, I thought “Anyone else want a Runa + Leon novella ? ” Just seems like they’d click, being all deadly together.

  26. I wasn’t sure I wanted to put this out there, as I don’t want to upset anyone, but maybe it will be useful . . .I hope so anyway.

    This sample is everything I hate about audiobooks and I wish you’d found a better reader. This woman’s emotional intonation is flat, her rhythm breaks up the text so sentence flow gets chopped up and she makes it’s harder to follow the story than it should be. The emphasis she added to “Boom, boom, boom” sounded embarrassingly fake, too. In short, IMO, she done your book so so wrong. Usually I avoid audiobooks because I hate being read to—I read so fast that I get bored between the words when other people are reading. In this case, though, I feel the reader gets between the text and the listener and too much of story is lost because of that
