Mod R: The Question Fairy has visited the BDH 😁.
Yes, and apparently it’s all about Augustine.
::rolls up sleeves::
Why did you say Ruby Fever is terrible? I love this.
I didn’t say it was terrible to read, I said it’s terrible to write. It will read just like any other Hidden Legacy novel. We will make sure that’s it’s romantic, captivating, and funny. It’s just going to take 3 times the effort on our part.
Will we get to see any of Connor and Alessandro’s sparring?
You sure are a thirsty lot.
Could Augustine’s younger brother be a prospective love interest for Arabella?
No. He is 16 at the time of Ruby Fever.
How vulnerable are Augustine’s younger siblings that he is so protective of them?
Spoiler, next.
Does Augustine’s younger brother switch places with him when he goes on missions?
Spoiler, next.
How do Augustine illusions work on the other senses? How would an infrared camera or night vision goggles react? If someone were to hug Augustine, would they be able to tell he was actually much bigger/more muscular than he appears? Does his tailor know his real dimensions or does he illusion his clothes? Do the illusions affect only their person or can they be projected onto surroundings or other people?
O_O. Illusion magic is complicated. It doesn’t really matter how his appearance is recorded. As a Prime, Augustine doesn’t just change his physical appearance, he hexes the equipment. Meaning that a human looking at the recording is affected by Augustine’s magic. He can use this power or not use it. It’s optional. If you hugged him, you would perceive illusion proportions. His tailor makes clothes in a number of sizes, because it takes a bit of a burden off Augustine. The rest is a spoiler.
Does this mean Augustine has a high magic usage threshold because he maintains the same image every day, all day, unless he’s going undercover? He must burn through calories.
Yes, Augustine does have a high magic threshold, but it takes a surprisingly small amount of magic to maintain the illusion vs creating it.
Can he maintain his illusions during sleep? Is it one illusion for his whole appearance or a series of illusions, one for each part of his body? When his face blurs and Catalina sees his real eyes, is that just his face illusion failing, or did his real body get revealed too?
Me: I think we should pencil Augustine in somewhere in the next 3 years or so.
Gordon: What would it be about? Augustine, hard-boiled detective solving a case?
Yes, Augustine can maintain illusion during sleep. He spoiler spoiler spoiler.
I can’t tell you because there is an Illusion mage in Ruby Fever.
Does Augustine don his real face that no one knows when he goes undercover? How different is it from his assumed image?
:sideeye: Next.
What is the active and what is the passive field of an Illusion mage?
Differs from mage to mage, but in general changing shape is active, maintaining said shape is passive.
Is Augustine also a Psionic? In Burn for Me when he fights with Rogan in Nevada’s office she feels raw terror.
No. :sigh: I guess I can give you this one. Augustine is very adept at people. He understands emotions and he is very aware of the visual impact, which is why when he misses the mark with Connor and Nevada, it has a profound effect on him. In that office scene, he created an illusion of something that would cause most people to panic. How he does that is a spoiler.
Augustine’s HEA book please? “He is K-Drama hero worthy.” “It’s your fault for making your secondary characters so fully fleshed out and complex”
Will Augustine get paired with someone who is immune to his magic and sees right through his illusion? Someone who non-physical magic just rolls off of?
Will we finally find out all of Augustine’s story in RF? What does he really look like, what is he really capable of?
This is you.
I have to go work.

I sort of envision something along the lines of Thor’s entry into the battle of Wakandia , Stormbringer swatting away all the contractual requirements and other projects and a chorus screaming “Bring us AUGUSTINE!” with lightening crackling about. 🙂

Sarah says
Haha I love how we as the BDH are always bugging you for stories of all your side characters. It’s not our fault that you create so many wonderful characters though!
Any time I discuss your books with anyone we always end up going through a whole extended wish list of people we want to read more stories about lol. Just know that whoever you choose to write next many of us will be jumping up and down with excitement and ready to throw our money at you for it ????
Kate says
I don’t want to bug them, but my dream imaginary novel would be in the Hidden Legacy universe, but back when the serum was first discovered and different groups of people were taking it. (I just relistened to Emerald Blaze and was thinking about psionics. Imagine thinking you’re a “nice” person and suddenly the power you have, after risking your life to take the serum, is to inflict fear.) So this imaginary novel of soldiers, aristocrats, and the wealthy all weighing the choice to take the serum, then dealing with the fallout is so interesting to think about.
Nina says
I would read this novel!
KBadberry says
All I can say is you guys are amazing and very very patient to put up with us.
Gordon says
What if there was no real Augustine Montgomery, and like a certain British spy, it was a code name or a mantel that one assumes? Everyone in the family takes turns being Augustine?
Patricia Schlorke says
Hmmm…????
You’re in for it now, Gordon.
Ilona says
Why are you like this?
Gordon says
Because it amuses me to be so. You knew this before you decided to marry me.
Kayeri says
I am noting distinct similarities to how my husband and I end our ‘discussions.’ =)
Seriously, though, reading this post and the comments on the post has lifted a very heavy Monday and given me a much-needed smile. Thank you all! =)
LucyQ says
Me too…so much so that we have an acronym for this.
“Why do I have to deal with X behavior in my life?”
“PLC.”
PLC stands for Poor Life Choices. We’ve been together for 27 years. It’s a little late to rue that particular PLC. 😉
And thank you, Authorlords, for answering our questions. The BDH is an inquisitive bunch, aren’t we?!
KC says
BTW ???? this exchange between Gordon & Ilona are totally relationship goals.
Y’all are cute. ????❤????
Sabrina says
Ah, but would all Augustines drink the same drink? 😉

Aydee says
There’s a movie on Netflix called “What happened to Monday” which I have yet to see, but saw the trailer…to shorten the plot, it is about a set of identical septuplets that share an identity due to a one-child policy. What if Augustine is part of a multiple birth? ???? Ohhhh the possibilities. ????
Sarah says
That would be a hilariously brilliant twist
Norbert says
Now you are just messing with us…
Theresa says
Dear Gordon…you are a cruel, cruel, cruel man
Gordon says
Okay, I know you’re going to say, well then, who did Rogan wrastle with? There was a real Augustine, Connor knew him but he died or disappeared. Connor knows and fake Augustine knows that Connor knows. That’s why they’re weird with each other. Thus the issues comment. I’m telling you, it works.
Ilona says
What if you get off your computer and we go down to the office and do some work instead of you riling up the poor fandom?
Patti in Ohio says
That’s okay, we like it. Ohhh, the speculation!
Arianna says
That’s right! Speculation is the best while waiting for the next book in a series ????

Tasha A says

Now you’ve done it – the BDH is now going to obsess even more over him until we get a story about him!
Jenn says
But now there could also be a female Augustine! Like Marvel Universe and Thor, Loki, etc … hahaha
Gordon says
“Of course.” In my best Tom Hardy Bane voice.
Bree says
Lol, I kind of love this idea.
Justine says
If the real Augustine disappeared is he being kept prisoner by the fake Augustine and would there need to be a big jailbreak with ferrets, screwdrivers, cameras, the works! I’m guessing fake Augustine wouldn’t know to protect the vents… mission alert mission alert!!!
wingednike says
Was he hired by the same company that was used by Rogan’s relative in Dimond Fire?
Kath says
Except that with Augustine being at college/university with Connor, his siblings would have been too young.
Mind you, how many illusions can you paper on top of one another, illusion 1 = slim Augustine, illusion 2 = buffer (is that a word in this context?) Augustine, illusion 3 = younger brother and at the base, it really is his younger sister???? 🙂
Tink says
So instead of Doctor Who he’s Doctor Which?
Patricia Schlorke says
He might be the Master or one of the Time Lords. ????
Gina G says
Or Missy ????
Tink says
Missy was so much better than the guy that followed.
Patricia Schlorke says
Missy and the original Master were the best ones.

O.o now that’s placed a spin on the already spinning conjectures about Augustine. So if Augustine were a few siblings or even cousins or…Excuse me while I wander off to a corner to retrieve pieces of my mind.

Laura Robbins says
LOL. You are evil. Thank you for that image, which will leave the rest of us begging for an Augustine book now. Well played.
JP says
Oooooo………very intriguing.
Stephanie Williams says
If Augustine was just a mantel, there would need to be a good explanation for why the family would create a persona who grew up as a child and matured into adulthood (presumably this is the boy/man Connor knew). Why create a persona who would have a limited lifespan? Because, surely, a boy who grew up to become a man would have to eventually grow old and die. Why not create a more intimidating, immortal face for the family?
Kal says
I’ve wondered for a while if that would be a plot twist. You made clear that Augustine can illusion into anything down to fingerprints and retinal scanning, even scent and temperature, so arguably we’ve never known what he looks like. He could even be she, or them. If you’ll forgive the comparison, it’s a bit like the very end of Spider-Man Far From Home when they reveal that Nick Fury was being played by Skrull the whole time. But when Nevada put the hex on his mind, then that scene must have been the real Augustine, or at least his mind. Or maybe not. I love this rabbit hole.
MamaOfThree says
No, illusion mages can’t fool with scent. That’s why the Baylor’s have guard dogs along at their security gate because you can’t fool dogs even with a different face and mannerism.
SoCoMom says
mwahahah, the Dread PI Augustine!
Gaëlle from France says
Well done, Sir, a little diabolical , but well done !! ????
Patricia Schlorke says
Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to answer those questions. I love the answers, especially the side eye and spoiler, next. ????????????
Augstine can be a pain in the rear end to the Baylor family. At least the family has Connor to level the playing field. ????
Stay cool in this high heat and humidity. ????

I have to admit I would love to read just about everything requested above. But that would require happy healthy authors. I hope Hidden Legacy can give you enough joy to make both happen
Aman Sidhu says
This post is everything, people are asking for things I’ve never even thought of and making me want an Augustine book ????. This is epic!
Norbert says
*Unashamed*
Yes, this is us. Give us a snippet and we want a whole (series of) book(s).
Skye says
This is a lovely way to start my Monday and lighten the annoyance I feel with my new job. I’m currently working on a contract more or less in my field (finally! thank the dark gods! but, proofreading catalog copy is weird), but my manager — let’s just say I know too much about her religious beliefs and I am so glad I don’t have to actually go to the office because apparently wearing masks — or maybe requiring people to wear masks — is against her beliefs.
Looking for a better job with a better manager ….
Jazzlet says
Good luck in your search.
KMD says
My city hall announced they will require masks again. You’d have thought they wanted firstborn children, the way people reacted. I bet 90% of them don’t even know where the building is.
DiDi says
Look at all those spoilery questions. Did people think they were being slick? That’s so cute.
Still, I wouldn’t say no to an Augustine book. It was a damn good reveal in that snippet.
Moderator R says
The smoothness always takes me out 😀
Amanda says
So I remember, a long time ago, there was art on your site showing what Augustine looked like and these make me think the real Augustine looks quite different?
Moderator R says
I’m afraid House A don’t remember this and neither do I, Augustine’s real face has always been a canon mystery. Mayhaps it was fan art you’re thinking of? 🙂
Amanda says
As long ago as it was that is a possibility, sigh, age loves to trick the memory
Lee says
Maybe this? https://twitter.com/ilona_andrews/status/517329456084426752

🙂 Fan art of Augustine as he shows himself to the world, by a very promising art student all the way back in 2014. House A share the amazing art inspired by the books sometimes, like here https://ilona-andrews.com/2021/beautiful-fan-art-by-sophia/ and here https://ilona-andrews.com/2020/dragons-workshops-and-the-end-of-ryder/

The Augustine hunger from the BDH is something else. I think the man is cool, and if you gave him a book, I’d read it, but I have never felt a soul-burning fire for him O_O
I will say that I do love the HL universe and understand that hunger. Those books are amazing and you two are geniuses.
Tink says
Bet you didn’t have a burning fire for Hugh either, did you? But then that first book came out. Do not challenge House Andrews.
(No, really, challenge them!!)
Tasha A says
I totally agreed with this until Gordan posted a couple of questions about Augustine above in a reply. His story could be so cool….
KC says
I’m sure an Augustine story would be fun, but I’d much prefer a Roman story.
I love that volhv. ????♂️????????❤
Tink says
Well, now you just opened up for follow-up questions. Such as…
Is there a version of Nevada’s power that can see through illusions? I’m assuming Augustine doesn’t trip her liar-dar because she relies on the spoken word in somewhat close proximity. So is there a branch of her power that can see through illusions? And tell if someone using sign language is lying?
Hee hee. Sorry, just picturing Ilona’s expression.
Sam says
The sign language question is very interesting. I’d love to know as well.
Brianna says
“Is there a version of Nevada’s power that can see through illusions?”
There was that scene in the second Nevada book where the guy pretending to be a demon was walking up to the car and sending panic magic in her direction, but her magic told her the demon illusion was a lie.
Tiger Lily says
Remember when the illusion guy on the highway (looked like a demon) got in the car with Nevada after the road was iced up? She saw him as a demon but then knew it was not correct. . . maybe when she touched him? In her head it said “lie.” And then later Augustine turned into a better version of the demon back at Nevada’s headquarters.
Tink says
I’d have to re-read it, but I thought she couldn’t see through the illusion until she shocked him. If she did see through it before the shockers, and she doesn’t see through Augustine’s, then maybe Augustine’s power level is higher than Nevada’s.
Or perhaps Nevada *is* seeing the real Augustine and everyone else sees something else, except that she thinks he looks too perfect so she’s probably seeing the illusion, too. So maybe she’d see the real Augustine if she shocked him so he’d drop the illusion.
Moderator R says
Philip McRaven was also an Average Psionic on top of being a Significant Illusion mage so Nevada would see through the panic he tries to induce. We see her easily resisting mental mages of the highest calibre, for example Olivia Charles’ efforts at Baranovsky’s ball.
“Augustine’s power level is higher than Nevada’s”. I don’t think that’s exactly how it works :). For the record, Nevada with very little to no training snaps out of Augustine’s power display in Burn for Me, not to mention totally breaking through his mind and fishing his secrets in White Hot:
“No. This is my house. You will not wreck my house and put my family at risk.
The icy vise of panic broke. “That’s enough,” I barked.
The two men startled. Augustine frowned. “How . . .”
“What the hell is wrong with both of you? This isn’t some bar you can wreck. This is my place of business. This is my home! There are children sleeping less than a hundred feet from this room.”
Andrews, Ilona. Burn For Me, Hidden Legacy 1. Avon HarperCollins, 2014. Kindle edition, page 261
Katherine says
Nevada’s aware that Augustine’s illusion shell is a lie, just like she knew the demon guy was a lie. That doesn’t mean she can see through them, though. Just like when someone tells her a lie, she knows it’s a lie, but that doesn’t mean she knows the truth.
kommiesmom says
She can tell if someone is lying without understanding what they are saying.
She proved that in her “Prime trial”. (The subject was speaking German if I remember correctly…)
I would assume that sign language would be just another “foreign” language to her power.
Tom says
It could be that her power is working not on what you say or see but what you are thinking (as it’s in the mental category) – if you know you’re lying it doesn’t matter whether it’s by projecting an illusion, speaking in tongues or signing – her magic will pick out that it’s a lie?
Thus she knows the illusion is a lie but not what lies beneath!
Amy R says
I’m sure it’s been said but I’m going to add to it, I’m sorry this book is sucking for you to write, especially when I am 99.9999999% sure I for one (and probably the rest of the BDH) am gonna love it.
“It’s your fault for making your secondary characters so fully fleshed out and complex”
*Nods* I’ll agree with that. I’ll even take it a bit further and say its your fault that the worlds you create are so fully fleshed and complex. That’s why those who love your books don’t care so much that the main arc is complete (Kate Daniels), its the side stories and the “every day” stuff that makes us love it.

Could anyone throw my frantically busy self a line as to approximately where in Burn for Me to find the above referenced scene with Connor and Augustine in Nevada’s office? Many thanks!
Moderator R says
It’s in Chapter 12 of Burn for Me, the brawl starts in earnest on page 260 🙂
“The room turned dark. Black bulges slid along the walls. Fear drained down my spine. Every instinct I had screamed at me that whatever was in the walls was bad and dangerous, and if it broke out, I needed to run.
“Don’t push me, Connor,” Augustine ground out. “You’ll fucking regret it.”
A violent, deranged light flared in Mad Rogan’s eyes. “Let’s test your theory about killing and jokes. I’ve got a good one just for this occasion.”
The bulges split. Ropy black tentacles shot out of the wall, flailing. If it was illusion, it was the best I had ever seen. Panic crushed me, chaining my feet in place. I shuddered in its grip. What the hell kind of magic was this?”

Now I’m thinking Augustine’s little brother is the receptionist that Nevada sasses and Arabella charms. What better way to hide, get in on the business, and be surprise backup?
I’m also thinking “Aaaaaa” after being behind at work, having 4 deadlines this week, and needing to take my wonderful toddler for a covid test this am (he was amazing, but still a toddler trapped in a box for 2 hours). This is a nice mental reset. ????
Sjik says
Omg! Came here to say the same thing! Augustine’s secretary is family!! With a very good “mental facade” trained into them, which is why Victoria Tremaine just walked by them with no pause to explore deeper. Oooooooooooh
Moderator R says
On the day Victoria Tremaine came to see Augustine, his usual assistant, Lina, was replaced with a different person who did not know Nevada :).
“The normally opaque glass walls sectioning off his workspace were now transparent, and from this vantage point we could see all the way down to the receptionist’s desk. Lina was gone. Instead a young man occupied the chair, busily working on his computer. I’d never seen him before and he probably didn’t know I existed.”
Andrews, Ilona. White Hot, Hidden Legacy 2. Avon HarperCollins, 2017. Kindle edition, page 414
Tom says
I was going to say that Lina IS Augustine and that as a prime he can project illusions not just onto himself but into the air – i.e the tentacles and bulges on the wall and the ‘Augustine’ that Nevada talks to in the office….
Mind you that doesn’t work all the time – like when he was sparring or driving Catalina to the hospital so sometimes he must be in the shell of the Augustine we see…
Just a thought… someone goes to grab him and falls through the illusion!
nrml says
ROFL! “This is you.” Augustine is not part of the hidden legacy of Victoria, so while he is an interesting character and reading what he does, including turning himself invisible twice now, is fun, I’m not part of the “more Augustine” train going off the rails here. But reading about illusion mages will be fun when it happens. When Rogan sees him at Nevada’s office, he asks what’s going on with all the hair there, as I recall. He knows it’s all an illusion, but he never says what Augustine actually looks like beyond that, to my recollection.
I’m actually more interested in what Victoria will do when she realizes that Catalina got the man she loves despite promising her that she wouldn’t leave her family to have him. That wedding will be fun to read about! I simply cannot wait for Victoria’s comeuppance!
It’s a lot of pressure on you to write this book for some reason. There are so many questions awaiting answers. You are amazing with what you do with words, and I appreciate it very much. Thank you again and again and again for the hours of enjoyment I have had reading your works.
wingednike says
I think Victoria will be pleased with how Alessandro and Catalina got together. She doesn’t want her miserable but the House must always come first. This solution brings a huge asset to House Baylor.
Patricia Schlorke says
I keep thinking about the scene in Emerald Blaze when Catalina and Alessandro are talking about their future. Catalina tells him she can’t leave her House, and he tells her he’s been excised from his House. So, I agree Victoria will be pleased.
Let’s see House Rogan, House Etterson, House Sagredo (even though Alessandro is excised), House Harrison, and House Duncan all tied to House Baylor in one form or another. I could include House Tremaine, but do I really want to? Those are a lot of powerful Houses aligned with House Baylor. ????
Katy says
Augustine, Cornelius, both Michaels…. I think bdh will be happy with more Hidden Legacy universe always
Rebekka says
Oh, I agree! I would love all of the above. Or a short story about an older Mathilda … Essentially I am pretty sure I would love everything out of this universe (or by IA in general, obviously).

I personally am shipping Augustine and Lenora, cause she doesn’t seem to have any time for his bull… they clearly have a history.

OMG! I Love this idea!
I wonder if they have a dating history.. she does seem especially annoyed with anything Augustine. hehe
Teri says
Yes, exactly–she’s just that littttle extra bit annoyed with him compared to how she responds to Connor. But while being super professional of course. Maybe it’s all in my head canon, but I think they used to date.

I’ve always thought they would be a good match to. She’s a bit older I think but max 5 years?

Sam says
I’m sorry Runy Fever has been giving you so much trouble. Sending virtual cookies your way. 🙂
Berta says
Augustine reminds me so bad to Aunt B, he helps you and he helps himself at the same time, and so loyal to his family/clan.
And the more I read, the more I think he will die, an epic death saving the people he loves.
Dana says
So, Augustine, the eternal bane of the Baylor family, creator of Illusions and secret luchador ????
Gotta love the little details, thank you for feeding the BDH!
Stacy McKnight says
We of them BDH are crazy! You guys do a really good job humoring us. I will say that I care more about the secondary and even a few tertiary characters from House Andrews than some of the mains on series I really like! Kid you not. I live with the pain e wry day knowing I will NEVER get all the books I want from House Andrews unless we all discover the secret to immortality. I might not get it then either lol it’s a ridiculous number.
Roxanne Wynne Davenport says
Ooooh. Maybe there’s a Dark Horse in the Montgomery House somewhere. Could that be the redacted Illusion mage???
Sara B. says
Oooh – what fun if Augustine meets (and irritates) one of Alesandro’s sisters who can negate his magic — would love to see Augustine having to placate an irritated teenager.
Stacy says
Oh wow…his sister and Augustine…oh my
Wendy says
thank you for the insights! I ❤️ them. Yes, i admit i am a 3-headed dragon when it comes to your side characters. They are amazing!!! ????????????
Athena says
Thank you very much for taking the time to answer those questions. I know we are a damning lot but being able to read a world that is so detailed as to have thought about whether a mage maintains their image during sleep is awe inspiring.
Thank you
Rebekka says
I have a very, VERY broad smile on my face now! 😀
Dana Maggs says
Not going to lie, I am on the We Want Augustine train. But I never thought to get my hopes up for it. I figured getting Blood Heir was gift enough when I thought there wouldn’t be any more KD world stuff, but this would be awesome too.
Gaitshi says
You have the ability to make your characters so real that we love them. I love it when you bring Augustine, Cornelius, Matilda etc into the books. I don’t want any of them or the other siblings to suffer any damage. I hope you end up loving Ruby Fever, so that we can get lots more Hidden Legacy books… but truly I love all your books and regularly reread them, it is very comforting to read a wonderful book again.
Pence says
Non Augustine question – Does Allesandro give up Spiders in favor of Granny Frieda’s tank or does she make him an armored weaponized Spider for a wedding present?
Michele G says
On behalf of the greedy, needy, never satisfied BDH: You did it for Hugh, now we want Augustines HEA.
It would be fun <3
Thank you so much for the non-spoliers. Can't wait for Ruby Fever.
SoCoMom says
Thank you for this!
I feel that a page of Dating Game-esque questions for Augustine could be hugely entertaining from the BDH POV. He could be made to answer them on Twitter to pay a lost bet, or something.
Handing you Alka Seltzer/tea/a beer as you read this.
Hope your week goes well.
Patty says
Wow. Thank you. I shall return to nursing my migraine and patiently waiting for all the wonderful things from house andrews.
TDoll says
You are so right. That’s us. I’d love an Augustine book. I hope some magic zing happens and Ruby Fever is suddenly easier to write. I know the book will be great, I just wish it was less grueling for both of you.
Salena says
I’ve never gone from loathing a character to being fascinated with him so quickly as I did with Augustine. When Connor tells Nevada he’s defending his siblings, his previous behavior made complete sense and it was like a switch flipped in my brain and now I love him.
Pence says
Doesn’t excuse his behavior towards the Baylors in the first books though. He really lacks empathy.
Salena says
True. I love that scene in White Hot when he thinks he’s been this clever, manipulative schemer but ends up completely screwed. ????
Lisa says
Last week was a really bad week for me, your post at the end of the week really helped. Thank you so much!
Then today, this new post made me smile and reduced my frustrations with work. Thank you again.
House Andrews and the Mods are amazing to your fandom. We so appreciate and adore every tidbit you give us. Thank you today and every day!
Side note.. I’d happily buy and read a Augustine HEA novella any time. 🙂
David Kay says
I love everything you write, even things I expect to be difficult to take (like Hugh’s reform), but I have to say I don’t have any great interest in learning more about Augustine. I’m sure I would enjoy whatever you wrote about him, but he is toward the bottom of HL characters that I would like to know more about. Just casting my vote.
Rachel says
Be careful not to make an April 1 joke about Augustine’s love life….who knows what would happen then ????

This is so interesting. Thank you so much. I need to go re-read Burn for Me again for the 112th time in a whole different perspective.

I really needed to go down the rabbit hole this morning and the BDH can certainly lead the way. There are enough ideas floating in the replies to fuel several books and several years. Frankly I am surprised Gordon and Ilona tolerate us at all. We must be their break from work. Thanks for the snippet
gigi says
well, alessandro is immune to magic so i guess you can pair augustine with one of his older sisters… or his mom if he’s into cougars, rawwrrr!
Amelie says
LOL, to be honest I had never thought too hard about Augustine’s illusion powers or his backstory but the rest of the BDH’s questions now have me curious. The K-drama line had me smiling since I got really into K-Dramas over the pandemic but now thinking about it, all of Hidden Legacy kind of reads like a K-Drama, minus all the magic.
Marcia Glenn says
glad you are feeling better.
jewelwing says
“*Could Augustine’s younger brother be a prospective love interest for Arabella?*
No. He is 16 at the time of Ruby Fever.”
Maybe now. But you could jump forward a few years in the timeline, and then it might not matter. When I expressed my mild concern that my 30-something daughter’s boyfriend (of several years now) was a few years younger than she is, my dentist’s wife said, “Oh, that doesn’t matter now. Both my boys are with older women. That’s a thing now.” One of her boys was married and the other engaged IIRC when she told me this. There may be less toxic masculinity in play when the guy is younger, and young women these days may have a lower tolerance for certain kinds of condescending BS than earlier generations had.
jewelwing says
Actually the first line should read “Certainly now.” No cradle robbing of teenagers. But a 22 year old and a 25 year old is not the same thing, and if the guy is at least 25, go for it.
Kailin says
They did say in a post about Blood Heir that none of their characters will have a love interest if they met that person when one of them was a child and the other is an adult. That’s why Julie and Derek will have to go through the ringer before being together. Though one could say maybe Arabella and Augustine’s brother haven’t met yet, I still think it would not be likely that they will do that, even if they fast forward a few years. She could still be with a younger guy if they fast forward, but maybe we’ll get lucky and they’ll bring in another new character 🙂
jewelwing says
Thanks for reminding me of that post. I’m looking forward to reading whatever they write. At this point, it could go in any direction, though clearly Arabella has an interest in the reluctant star water mage.
MH says
I thought Stephen Jiang is the love interest for Arabella, isnt he? Augustine or his family cant possibly be that… I mean, they already have an alliance. No need for marrying into his family to drive the point home, eh

Lol. You really do make compelling, fun and in depth characters. That’s why we like books about supporting characters. Augustine is so interesting because he seems so indifferent but I get the sense he is a lot deeper than what we see.

Remember, once upon a time, there was these type of comments: What would happen if the preceptor of the Iron Dogs redeemed himself? What is Hugh’s backstory? What if Hugh found himself? … Then there was a ‘hold my beer’ moment.. behold we have a book, a great book. Yup BDH are doing it again.
Jen H says
I know you have stated many times that Hidden Legacy is more labor intensive for y’all, but Thank you! for pushing through and giving us more of this world.
And you do write amazing characters (even bit parts) that make your worlds so much fuller and stories more comprehensive. Kinda got a laugh that someone blamed the fact that we cared on you. Lol
Claudia says
Thanks for indulging us! And yes, please, more Augustine 🙂
Mathandlit says
One of the things that make me come back and reread your novels are the secondary characters. I love any Doolittle scene, for example, in the KD books (especially when he makes tea). But I can’t imagine him as the main character in a novel. Augustine, however…well, that “give us Augustine” picture says it all.
Jason Nichols says
the best person for him/ to call him out would be someone blind that has magic that makes up for it. basically illusion would be pointless on. A magical female daredevil type. we havent seen anything like this but theres so many hints about new magics anything is possible.

Kind of hoping vampirism is real because at the speed the BDH add to your works list you guys are going to need to live forever.

Gotta say after all this time with him around the horde has a soft spot for the guy. He’s that blend of mysteriously cool yet hints of softness that makes you want to understand him better and maybe see him overcome that ingrained need to hide his true self from everyone.
Julie says
Wow. So, him, so darn demanding. Gratitude. Also, does chocolate or knitting work better to support your creative process? Asking for a multitude of friends
Chris Carroll says
It’s your own darn fault, you know… You make the secondary characters so compelling that the devouring horde want MORE! lol. Thank you for all of the wonderful characters!

I will take and read what ever you write. Got my grandson hooked on your writing he had to wait in the car while I was in a Dr. Appt. So I gave him my nook with the first innkeepers story, told him if he got bored to give it a try, he is not a reader, to my surprise, he was half way thru the story when I came back to the car, he said it was the first sentence that got him it took me two days to get my tablet back cause he wanted to finish the series told him to barrow his mom’s old tablet and he could read the rest of them.

Why, you ask ????? because I am almost 99.99999% sure that House Andrew’s BDH reach potentially spans the 4 corners of the world/globe????, given the many languages, time-zones, and countries IA books are sold in????????????????????.
Because the BDH reach is international????, ……..it also stands to reason the mystery that is Augustine Montgomery is or should also be henceforth ????”International”.
I rest my case.

ROFLOL. Thank you, Ilona Andrews, for the post.
The simplest answer to me is : Augustine is. Just like any living being, he is. Living life changes all living things from day to day. To be realistic in an imaginary world the living entity will grow and shrink etc depending on what it’s “life” experiences are.
I did enjoy the post. We eagerly look forward to your next works. For entertainment, thinking, crying, laughing, surviving this drat pandemic or as one of my siblings says ******* ????. Yes Mother used all the “proper” tools to realign her speech to proper lady like …..

Yay!! Augustine!!
Loving the way you are gently pushing him to us…… Which means he plays a substantial role in RF….which means he is probably going to go up against the Office of the Warden, ergo Catalina…..which also means he is terminating someones whom Catalina is looking into……
That is so much conjecture that my brain wants to time-jump to the book-release day and devour it…..(I am so taking a leave for this book!)

House Andrews is the best! Thank you for the QnA post. It’s always fun to read them. Thank you again for doing the un-fun to bring us Ruby Fever. I stopped reading at the word *spoiler* but bookmarked to come back and read after the book releases. I realized today that I have purchased most of your books in paperback, kindle, and audio. I stopped the paperback when I moved into a mobile home, but still buy both audio and Kindle versions and they are so worth the money.
I have a shortlist of authors I read absolutely everything they release, but none of them are as re-readable as you two. I mistimed Paper & Blood by a week and am already into Wildfire, so Kevin will have to wait another week.
Thanks so much for all of your amazing books, and the Kate Daniels series. 😉

Just in case there is not enough people begging for it, I second and third give us Augustine!!!!!
I have to say, coming up with the universes seems like a lot of work to me, and I think we get attached to them and love them as readers, so I hope that you don’t get bored of telling these stories. The mages, Primes, Significants, it is all super fun to read and I would read a Cornelius story as well!!!! And any other story you’d be willing to tell 😀
Juni says
“How amusing”
Momcat says
One of the best things about your novels is that there are almost no 2 dimensional people. Even the secondary or even animal characters have, well, character. Kate’s Mammoth donkey had me ransacking the internet for days. They all come off the page and into my mind. I don’t close your books and forget about the story. I wonder about the characters. I wonder about you creating characters. Then I wonder about the characters some more. I read many stories like I eat potato chips. Chomp, chomp, gulp, and forgotten. Your attention to personality surely makes more work for you, but it ensures that I am not going to close the book and forget about it.
Katie Gorman says
Lol. The image is 1000% accurate.
V says
In the BDH’s defense, I think that any meaty snippet that provides interesting insight into a familiar secondary character is going to elicit “Give Us Fill-In-The-Blank” responses. If you ardently want to develop a secondary character into a separate book, you have only to drop a yummy snippet into the blog waters to get a response strong enough to send publishers running to their contract files, or to give you enough ammunition for self-publishing.
Perhaps for a week or two after a new book comes out, the response might be a bit weaker, as we devour the new offering. But between new books, we seem to be mostly rabid appetite! And if Gordon decides to get creative, it only feeds the fire (forgive the rabid fire mixed metaphor)!!
U says
I have questions!!!!!
Question 1:
“When his face blurs and Catalina sees his real eyes, is that just his face illusion failing, or did his real body get revealed too?”
Where did Catalina see his real eyes???
Question 2:
“… which is why when he misses the mark with Connor and Nevada, it has a profound effect on him.”
What mark? What do you mean? The contract he offered Nevada and she refused? Or what he said about Rogan to try to change his mind?
I don’t remember any of it having a profound effect on him!
( English isn’t my first language so I probably read that particular scene and it went over my head)
Thanks in advance for any help ☺️
Moderator R says
Hey U,
1. Catalina sees Augustine’s real eyes in Sapphire Flames, when she gives him the information regarding his father’s killer:
““Because Bradley Lynton is his new name. He was previously known as Melvin Rider.”
All the color bled from Augustine’s face. The illusion fractured for a moment and I saw his real eyes, shocked and triumphant. His face snapped back into perfection. “Thank you, Ms. Baylor. I look forward to our cooperation in the future. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have someplace to be.””
Andrews, Ilona. Sapphire Flames, Hidden Legacy 4. Avon HarperCollins, 2019. Kindle Edition, page 295
2. Augustine misses the mark on Neva and Connor when he tries to frighten them with his power display in Burn for Me, in Nevada’s office. He is shocked that Nevada snaps out of it and Connor isn’t impressed at all.
“The icy vise of panic broke. “That’s enough,” I barked.
The two men startled. Augustine frowned. “How . . .”
“What the hell is wrong with both of you? This isn’t some bar you can wreck. This is my place of business. This is my home! There are children sleeping less than a hundred feet from this room.”
The darkness vanished like a candle flame snuffed out by a draft. Rogan let go of Augustine.
“I don’t know which one of you is worse. Are you out of your minds? You’re both selfish, spoiled pricks.”
“Nevada?” my mother said behind me.
I glanced over my shoulder. My mother stood in the hallway with Grandma Frida next to her. My mother carried a shotgun. Grandma Frida carried her phone.
“Why are you screaming at an empty room?” my mother asked.
It had to be Augustine’s illusion. I glared at Augustine. “Drop it.”
He grimaced. ”

Violet says
All I want is the next book. Lol.
Wendy S says
I’m sorry, but I can’t understand the fixation on Augustine. He threw Nevada to the wolves in the first book! He was willing to sacrifice Nevada and her family to keep what’s his name, Burn for Me guy/mage’s family happy! He’s not really a nice guy. How Connor or Nevada ever forgave him, I don’t know! He has issues. Yeah, he has Not a Nice Guy issues! So he seemed to want to help prevent a young boy from committing suicide. So? Augustine probably had a hidden agenda there! Not going for this new Augustine. Not for a minute!

See d’Ambray, Hugh.
Augustine is a saint compared to that guy and that guy has a 3-book series planned.

Yes, you’re right. But I’d need to see good reasons for him behaving so badly to Nevada. Unless, as Gordon suggests, somebody else took turns with the Augustine persona! ????????
Ann says
I think that Hugh and Kate have more of a level playing field whereas Augustine abuses his power with Nevada and Catalina. Just my opinion (because we all know Hugh is soooo much better than Augustine.????)

Slightly off-topic question… When Rogan was telling the story of how Augustine got the nickname Pancakes, I got the impression that happened in a college fraternity, but didn’t Rogan join the military right out of high school? Or did the challenge Augustine have to complete happen in high school?
Moderator R says
Mad Rogan went to college. He met Augustine at the Arcana Club at Harvard 🙂
“The man shrugged. He was pale and painfully young, younger than Bern. It might have been the lousy quality of the video, but he looked scared. The camera zoomed in on his face. His blue eyes were so sad, almost mournful and filled with power.
“How old is he?”
“It’s his senior year of college. He’s nineteen. He graduated from high school early and did his bachelor’s in three years. He was brilliant.”
“He also had the best tutors money could buy.” House Rogan was wealthy. I wasn’t sure what exactly they did, but Mad Rogan was a fourth-generation Prime.
“It’s time,” the woman’s voice said. “Remember, this entire sector has been evacuated. This is just property damage. No doubts, Connor. You are doing the right thing.”
Sure he was. Someone must’ve talked to him at college, someone from the military with many bars on his or her shoulder, and he must’ve listened, because they flew him out to Chetumal to see what he could do.”

I just have a simple question.
How do you pronounce his name? Is it Augus-TEEN? Or Au-GUS-tin?

Hey harpec,
House Andrews are happy with readers pronouncing names however they’re comfortable, but the audiobooks have the Augus-teen variant, I believe that’s the most commonly used 🙂

I wanted to ask about the EB scene where Catalina saw his real eyes. Before the spoiler of Augustine being slightly shorter, I had no questions. Now, wouldn’t Catalina notice the height difference when he revealed his “true eyes”? Or is this him using active power to change the illusion to portray shock?
Also, love pot stirring Gordon. Way to go! Now we all can make up Fandom Fun.

This is really a totally new angle on Augustine, first the cool snippet and now the various implications of Illusion magic. And of course the serial Augustines (maybe an alligator Augustine too like the Loki Variant?).
Actually my favourite aspect of Hidden Legacy (apart from the faboulos characters of course): all the layers of magic revealed over time. Like Nevadas fear of being used as a human lie detector and then she discovered so many more aspects of her talent than just the sensing of lies. And the list goes on.
Have to re-read HL for hints now that might have been there…..

YES PLEASE to a giving Augustine his own book (but lower priority for me than a trilogy for Arabella)!!! But no thank you to Gordon’s crazy “maybe Augustine is just a persona various family members take on” idea–what purpose would that serve for the family? I want Augustine to be one person, a flawed, complicated, but likeable person once you know him. I don’t understand why his behavior in Burn for Me is such a roadblock for some people–have they not seen what you guys pulled off with Hugh D’Ambray’s redemption?! I’m convinced that no character is irredeemable in your hands 🙂
P.S. Gordon and Ilona, it is so much fun to see the interplay between you two 🙂 I’m sorry RF is so difficult to write, but thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for doing it anyway. When people ask me what my favorite book is, the answer is always, “Anything by Ilona Andrews”!

Haha we must look like crazy fans right now, Augustine is so interesting. My favourite is Bern- such a quiet chap.Super excited for the nxt book, we shall wait patiently then ????
Daphne says
You guess are the best. Really. I loved this post and cannot wait for RF. That said, I hope you both are taking care of yourselves so you don’t burn out.
Noybswx says
Can I add to the question fairy queue? ???? always wondered if there was a side character you guys wanted to write more on but didn’t (for whatever reason).
Also, I know you both have to cut and edit a lot, what was the hardest scene to cut for you?
Ami says
???????????????? I love y’all and appreciate the patience you have w our ravenous hoard.
MLS says
Maybe Nevada, Catalina and arabella has a secret long lost “older” sister that will be the perfect match for Augustine… 🙂
Just thinking and bending the Hidden Legacy world…coz it kicks ass!
Tink says
Hey, Mod R,
Ask Ilona if she reads the Zits comic strip. If not, tell her to look up the comics for Aug. 9th and 10th. Can she relate? ????
Therese Kent says
???????????????? I love how patient and tolerant you are with us
Thank you
Jess says
Anyone thinking along my thought lines?
Augustine has a brother. He is illusion mage. In one of the books Connor said dogs can sniff and tell if illusion mage is pretending to be someone. What if Arabella can do the same and she can tell it’s Augustine brother…. ie sniff him out and always know it’s him.

Thank you. 🙂
Moderator R says
Book Devouring Horde ????. We are nicknamed after the Hope Crushing Horde in the Innkeeper Chronicles, because we are greedy greedy readers hehe ????
Tink says
If we ever form a biker gang, Baying Dogs of HouseAndrews would work as the patch.
Jesse Wendel says
Thank you.
Kendal Bozant says
Where is it that Augustine is extremely protective of his siblings?
Kendal Bozant says
And wasn’t there something about him trying to find his father’s killer?
Starchild says
I like Augustine for arabella
Moderator R says
No, Augustine/Arabella pairing will never happen, as confirmed by House Andrews.
The age difference is huge and he met her as a child https://ilona-andrews.com/2021/busy-busy/
Khadija says
Its gonna be that Cdrama actor/water mage. Guys cmon get the hint already.
Ann says
That’s what I think, too.
Dianna says
I’m interested in Augustine’s book. Really any book you should happen to write.
BUT I really really want to read about Leon. Who is his father and what will he do with all those millions / wealth when he finds out, how will it impact the family, how will his mother play into it, etc.
Judy says
What millions/wealth? I don’t remember anything like that! Leon’s mother never married either of her boys fathers…..
Mugdha D says
I have so many questions –
How are Catalina and Linus related?
Is Regina Augustine’s or Connor’s cousin?
Will there be a book about Matilda Harrison?
Sam says
Catalina’s and Linus’ connection hasn’t been confirmed (but I believe that Linus is Catalina’s grandpa).
Regina is Michael Latimer’s cousin, I believe.
Bill from NJ says
You two are like the food company that produces stuff that is so goey and yummy that no matter how much they expand, they can’t produce enough. You have created this rich universe of characters that just drives more demand. Problem is there is just two of you,a lot of characters and addicted readers.
I can envision solutions, none good
– you hire a team of writers to ‘flesh out your vision’ like certain hack authors do. Won’t work, if the snarky feedback doesn’t make them run away, Gordon’s patented death stare or Ilona brandishing one of Kate’s swords w a maniacal cackle will do it
-build an AI system that has you two’s engrams coded in it so it can write while you two sit back w margaritas and congratulate yourself on a job well done (maybe D2 would build it?). Only problem is those two sets of engrams merged would mean it would soon want to spend its time watching Chinese serials , playing World of Warcraft and knitting, all the while making snarky comments about your plot outline…and would die an ignomious death when Gordon pours cheap vodka on the server running it, shorting it out forever, the final insult being dying over 5 buck a bottle booze.
Ah,well,we just will have to wait…..
Khadija says
Hes gonna be paired with that fire mage. The one we thought was a bad guy in the last book. She likes trolling ppl on twitter thats why I remember her. My kinda Gal. Lmao
Kat Kimbriel says
LOL LOL LOL
Can’t wait, as always.
Ann says
Most times I just want to smack Augustine but, of course, I would eagerly read his story if you wrote it. Your stories create an never ending thirst. I am rereading every single one while waiting….
Katy says
So this is a really interesting discussion. Generally, I either really like protagonist characters, or I dislike the mean people. You have portrayed Augustine as a complete ass very convincingly. So it would be really interesting to see him as a protagonist in any kind of novel. Or imagine him with a love interest. He’s pretty much an antihero.

Love you guys and thank you for your never ending patience with all our questions!! If it were me, I’d tell us all to jump in a lake!! Or not respond at all.
Kendra Townsend says
We can’t help that you guys are absolutely amazing! The people and worlds you create from simple words have ten times more life than tiny scribbles on a page should be able to convey. The ability you 2 share when writing is amazing, humbling and uplifting. Thank you for the gift of story you continue to share with us.
Karen A. says
I always feel there’s something about Augustine and Arabella, which my delirious mind won’t stop thinking. I’m just a big Hidden Legacy fan. Can’t wait for more Augustine! ☺️
Mod R says
No, an Arabella and Augustine pairing will never happen, the age difference is huge and he met her as a child https://ilona-andrews.com/2021/busy-busy/
Gail Roll says
Love your work! be well and God bless.
Casey says
Augustine is so interesting! Thank you for sharing.
Also I have devoured Solo Leveling which was phenomenal!!!!! The Villainess is a Marionette was also good and the art pretty. Are there any more manga/manhwa/manhua that you have found to be excellent?
L says
????????????
Excellent sign off ❤️
Rosemarie says
I always imagined Augustine as Owen Burnett from Disney’s Gargoyles
Adela says
If a whole Austine novel is too much of an intimidating and weary prospect, how about an Augustine novella? You guys do novellas so well! One minute it’s an itty bitty novelka, a thousand or three words later it’s a notvella.
Also, a Matilda short story. A Mia short story. A Runa/Bern short story or three. A why Leon inherits billions (some day) short story 😉 😉 😉 A Leon Bern mom shows up short story. A couple of baby Rogan short stories. And an Arabella Unsuitable Suitors trilogy featuring Arabella meets House Madero.
Judy says
Dear Mod R
Where in the HL cannon does it Say that Leon will inherit millions/billions some day? The BDH have mentioned this several times…..
Moderator R says
Nowhere in canon 🙂 . It is a BDH theory that Leon is the whispered-about son of Gabriel Baranovsky, the billionaire who hosted the Prime ball.
Judy says
Thank you!! It’s been driving me crazy????
KMauk says
Love the Hidden Legacy Series! Can’t wait for Ruby Fever. Thanks for posting the blurbs and Q&A’s. It gives us hope that our waiting for certain sequels is not in vain!
Emma Little says
How is it that Alessandro is not immune to Augustine? Is Augustine’s magic not a psi/mental magic?
Moderator R says
Alessandro is not immune to all magic all the time ????.
He can resist magic when he is in dangerous situations and his passive field protects him.
He can also nullify magic but he needs to do a House spell for that.
Sandy says
That is most assuredly me. Work Yeah! More for the Horde. He He you are dr. Of best books EVA..???????? So funny. So excited. Will wait by using last reading list. Never surrender ! Ink good for Horde.????
Sarah Richardson says
Hi, I’m not sure if more questions are allowed, but if you ever revisit questions on Augustine or illusion mages… Do their illusions work on antistasis? It’s not clear from the tea party snippet if Alessandro is fooled or if he knows how illusion primes work. Thanks. And thanks for the snippet too!
Sarah Richardson says
Never mind. I see your response above. I should have read all the comments prior to posting my own. 🙂
