Clean Sweep, dead tree version, is now available on CreateSpace. It will soon pop up on Amazon as well. Before I link it, I wanted to make it absolutely clear what this edition is.ย It comes with the following warning:
***Notice: This is a special Collectors Edition, trade-paperback volume, which includes Black and White original illustrations. It is a short novel, of approximately 60,000 words in length/227 pages***
1) This is a Print-on-Demand edition, which means that it costs more to print the book, which in its turn drives up the price, which is why this edition costs $10.99. We will be getting about $2.50 from each copy sold through Amazon.ย ๐
2) To keep the cost down, we had to go to black and white illustrations. Black and white illustrations can be printed on regular paper.ย Color illustrations have to have special paper.ย POD creators lack the ability to do special paper inserts, so to have color illustrations, the entire book would have to be printed on the special paper.ย It would cost over $50.ย ๐
3) Because it’s a POD, the format of the book is more of a Trade Paperback than a mass market.
Gordon and I know that many of you would like to support us, but Clean Sweep has already sold incredibly well in e-format. We never had a book stay in top 100 on Amazon for so long.ย It sold so well, we can afford to hire someone to do an audio version.ย We are absolutely thrilled that you liked it so much.
So, just to be clear: this is a version for people who either don’t like to read in electronic format or who just want to have a printed volume to keep as a keepsake or to give to someone as a gift.ย It is expensive, beyond what I personally would consider a bargain, and is about 2/3 of the length of Magic Burns. It is exactly as described, a collector edition.ย We are probably going to get some for giveaways, and because I just want one, but we don’t really count on the POD version to pay our bills. Don’t buy it to help us, buy it if you really want one. ๐
Katie S says
Woo Hoo! An audio version of Clean Sweep – life is very good! Thank you so much – and congrats again.
Maria D. says
Sounds good to me! Glad sales are going well
Colleen says
I seriously love that you tell us all this! I know of no other author that shares what they make on books and tells their readers…”don’t buy it to help us out!” It is very much appreciated.
Alana Joli Abbott says
I agree with Colleen. Thanks for putting all of this on the table! It gives helpful insight into how self-publishing works. ๐
Lesley says
Neat! I already have the kindle version, so I’m good, but I’m curious if the color versions of the beautiful illustrations are online somewhere? They’re lovely. Thanks!
Ilona says
Hey Lesley, your kindle version comes with color illustrations. If you download kindle app on your computer and sync it to your account, you can see all of them in color. ๐
Tasha A. says
oooo i didn’t realize this! Now I’m going to download it to my computer! Also – so excited for the audio version! Thank you!!
Lesley says
Oh, WOW. Thanks! I never thought to check the computer app version. Happy Holidays!
Smeech says
Will this print on demand version be available at Barnes and Noble? Or just Amazon?
I’m excited about an audio version of Clean Sweep.
Ilona says
I am not sure. I know that CreateSpace distributes through several retailers. All my people in NY are gone for the holidays. We’ll just have to wait and see.
Vinity says
Holy crap!! An audio ed! I never dreamed we’d get that. I’m so excited!! Thank you!
Ilona says
We are talking to your favorite narrator, but we are not sure if she will be able to do it. Her schedule is very full because she is in such high demand.
Vinity says
WOW, if she can do it I’ll be even more happy but just getting an audio is more than I expected.
Vinity says
BTW, I’d have totally bought the $50 color ed.
Ilona says
:waves paws: We couldn’t do it. We couldn’t put one out at that price because that is just Too Much Money.
Vinity says
I bought the Thomas short story Jim Butcher put out at Sub Press for $45. There is a market for this sort of thing. I’ll place you bets, if they haven’t already, Subterranean Press will be knocking at your door to make them something.
John says
Blackout, with illustrations by Mike Mignola, creator of Hellboy (and RARELY illustrates anything but his own creations, so you can tell he was a fan!). Sadly sold out and still looking for a copy myself, despite it being in Side Jobs.
Vinity is correct, Subterranean Press does outstanding work for collector volumes. Yes, they ARE expensive, but the end results are worth the price.
Vinity says
Ha! I have the signed ed ๐ I think it sold out in a few hours. I think I’m #83 if memory serves.
John says
I would RARELY buy a book for that much, but for a few, SELECT Authors (King, Gaiman, Butcher, Harrison, and that pesky Andrews ๐ ) I would make a exception, or if the book was a benefit book for a worthy cause.
Claire says
I’m another who’d happily pay the price for colour edition! I do with almost all of Kelley Armstrong’s Sub. Press special editions. Worth it, the work is beautiful.
Brooke says
Fingers crossed for Renee Raudman ๐
Katelin says
I know! She’s the best narrator I’ve ever heard. I don’t know how she changes her voice so easily and so well.
Bethany says
And…ordered! Thank you so much for keeping us apprised of these delightful happenings.
dr susan says
Oooohhh…paper pages! I love paper pages. By the way, Clean Sweep will be my first read on my new phone; at least, it will be if I don’t get lost trying to find that Amazonian cloud…
Snapdragon says
What great news!
LynneW says
Want! For myself in addition to the e-version, but also for the library. But I’m confused about CreateSpace. It says “an Amazon company” but do we just sign in with our Amazon account? Sorry to be dense, but I have to give very specific instructions to the library’s buyer or it won’t get bought.
Or I can wait and see if it will be picked up by the library jobbers … nah. Want Now! ๐
Bethany says
From what I can tell you do have to create a Create Space account that is separate from your Amazon account. (At least that’s the process I went through and it didn’t yell at me for already having an account.)
LynneW says
Thanks Bethany!
John says
Wish I could get a autographed copy. Are any available? You both are on the top of my list to get a autographed book from. And thank you, some of us really hate eReaders and grew up with libraries. I know the trees might be a bit mad at us, but I appreciate a real book over a electronic screen anyday.
EriNC says
As much as I love paper books. The kindle as been instrumental in improving my life. I read around 500-1500 pages a day depending on the amount of time I have and the length of the books. I was getting migraines about 3 times a month. I got my Kindle I think I have had one migraine in the past 6 months (these last about a week for me). It also opens up access to authors who for some reason do not have a publisher and have to do things on their own. I rarely read anything but independent authors now because their books are so much cheaper, and because they can write what they want, not what the publisher wants. I my self am writing a book and will be publishing it independently. I dont like what I am seeing from the big name publishers these days.
Shalene says
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I actually asked my husband to buy a Kindle just for this series =D I’m not that excited about moving to an eReader (I like the feel of books, even the smell). A paper edition is like getting an early Yule present <3 Can't wait to place my order!
Brie says
I won’t pick up the POD version, but I’m very excited about an audio version of Clean Sweep. Thank you so much!
Tasha Turner says
Very exciting to see you going through the complete hybrid experience. I suspect you’ll have more paper sales than you expect.
Love how you share so much. Really enjoy seeing you write things you love, being willing to take a chance on them, and getting to see success. Your fans love you. I know your books and shorts are the talk of several Goodreads groups I’m on and you were in the top 10 favorite author/series/”new to me” in informal polls for the year.
You know next we’ll be asking for all the Curran shorts to be put into a paper version… Subterranean Press should be talking to you about special collectors editions for a favorite cause of yours.
Jessie says
Hmm. I’d like the color illustrations, but the POD version would go on the bookshelf. Decisions, decisions. Or maybe I’ll just buy both and have it all. ๐
Jessie says
Dustin wants to know if you’re planning to turn on Kindle MatchBook (if it’s possible with CreateSpace) to discount the ebook when we buy the POD version. I’m not sure how authors feel about it, but as a consumer, I like it.
Ilona says
I don’t know if that’s an option that is available to us and there is nobody I can ask, as everyone is off for the holidays. ๐
wont says
My order is in! So exciting. I agree with previous posters, I believe there is a market for the color edition. However, I can understand your choice. I can’t wait to get the book. I love ebooks as well, but I have no intention of not buying paper editions of special authors.
Squeeing here! ๐
Ann says
I just found it on Amazon . . . and it will soon join the other books on my “Ilona Andrews” shelf ๐ Very excited!!
clare says
I was worried for a moment that it would be USA only but it is on Amazon UK too and I got mine ordered. So excited. You’re one of the few authors who I just have to have hard copies for as well as kindle editions so I can have them all lined up on my shelf. Thanks so much for having clean sweep printed.
Katelin says
It would have been cool to see it in color but for me, the price wouldn’t be worth it. I’ll stick with the nook version.
Jessica R. says
Can’t wait to get one, my husband can’t even have a cell phone at work let alone my kindle so hard copy it is. I’m so excited to get him a copy! I hope he loves it as much as I did.
Sue says
Createspace says you live Portland…Texas???? I will buy it, I love the blues, my favorite.
dana says
I usually got your books in two formats paper and audio. This book got out right on time for my b-day, so I gave the website to my husband, you made his life easy. When is the audio format coming out?
I never thought that I will become a fervent fan at my age, never say never. I love your books and your website. You are amazing!
NellL says
Happy Birthday!
Jeanie says
Can’t ask for a better disclaimer than that. Thank you for taking the time to be so clear. I’m looking forward to reading my e-book copy over the holiday break.
Wind-Turbine-Generator1.Com says
Its such as you learn my thoughts!
Adam says
So, I know this is a fringe-y question, as I am a very non-typical ebook reader. However, is there a non-DRM’d ebook version available? I don’t own a kindle, and I read most of my ebooks on a phone that doesn’t use iOS, Android, or BB. If there’s not, I’ll just buy the print version, since stripping the DRM off of a file is more annoyance than I want to deal with.
Thanks!
EriNC says
You can download kindle to your computer and read from there.
Tisiphone says
Thank you, I want two copies! Mostly because my sister will want to read it and I don’t share well.
Bea says
bought as soon as I saw this ๐ it is costing me $18.97 AUD but I don’t care ๐ ๐
cocoakitten says
Audio version of Clean Sweep ๐ ๐ ๐ That’s my favorite good news of the day!
Bea says
the only thing is waiting for it to arrive. It tells me it may take until February, but fingers crossed it will be sooner
Joel says
I haven’t gone to e-readers yet — I stare at a computer screen too much for my day job — but I’ll buy the print version and enjoy the trade paperback larger size. I’m grateful to be employed in a good job and have money to spend on a little extra now and then, and I still use libraries and used-book stores for much of my reading needs.
For what it’s worth, I would like to have the color versions of the illustrations — but my own price point on that would be about $25, maybe $30. $50 gets too expensive for that. Other readers’ budgets may vary. I like the cover — maybe an 8/10, better than many other books I see.
Shelly says
You guys are awesome. I can’t think of many authors who would go to this kind of effort to make it clear exactly what a POD is and how the price is set. I have very few paper books left in my library, and have been reading e-books for about 10 years, so I won’t be getting the POD. However, the audio version is a different story. I’ll snap that baby up like an frog after flies. Yay!
Kat Q. says
Just bought a copy as an Xmas present for my teenage niece, who is an avid fan/reader (mostly my fault), but is not digital yet as far as reading goes. She’ll be thrilled and I’ll be her favorite aunt for another year in a row ๐
Jenny says
Thank you so much for making it available in this form! I was thinking that I was just going to have to miss out, but there you go taking care of all your fans again…
JenMo says
It’s cool to see this is already selling so well online. Being self-pub, does it qualify for the NYT best seller list?
Audio is great news, but I’m going to go away from the pack and admit to liking the idea of a new narrator. I have a keen ear for voices, and I know I’d hear Kate, despite being sure Rene would do a great job.
haruko says
Just in time for xmas!! Got one for me, and one for the awesome friend that introduced me to your books! ๐
Wondering, where would one get signed copies of this or any of your books? I wanted to get said friend a few signed editions ( and for me too, we’re both huge fans) but couldn’t find them anywhere online….and we both live too far away to attend signings ๐
dsolo says
I’m slowly but surely converting my favorite books to e-format, just because of the space issue. I’m really excited about the audio version, because my dyslexic husband prefers audio, and I have been reading Clean Sweep to him. I’m so ready for audio! So happy that Clean Sweep has been doing so well. The entire time I was reading the serial, I was looking forward to having it all together in one book. I have already read it 3 times since purchasing. If you ever decide to do a shared world with other authors (like Niven’s Kzin or MZB’s Friends of Darkover), I think you should use Baha-char. I loved the little glimpse of Jack and George, and the description of the various sights and sounds.
Claire says
Just ordered my print copy!! So excited to have it sat on my shelf with the rest of my IA books! Funny thing is my best friends and I were just discussing this the other day over lunch. We’re all massive, massive fans, and we already bought and read it on Kindle, and agreed we’d be buying the print edition asap as well! Can’t wait for more of whatever you write, because it’s all fantastic.
Knstrick says
You are an auto-buy for me, not only because I enjoy your work so much but also to show my appreciation and support for your future writings. ๐ I will be ordering the paper version (already have the kindle) of Clean Sweep and any future forays into Dina’s world (love her voice). How much would you hate me if I mailed my paper copy of Clean Sweep to you with a self-returned envelope for an author’s signature?? Would that even work I wonder?
Tasha Turner says
Are you thinking of enrolling Clean Sweep in the Kindle Match program so those who buy the paper version get a discount or free ebook version (for themselves or to gift)?
Cat @ Breakfast to Bed says
or for someone who has a small obsession with owning books they love in all available formats.
it’s not weird.
it’s a little weird.
i’m still buying.
Heather says
I don’t know how the paperback version will sell, but the e-book is still going strong

Yes! So exciting. I’m one of the hold out freaks who needs physical books. No eReader for me…yet. I might have to give in one of these days but will buy a physical book over an eBook any day. Thanks!!!

Ordered Sat via Amazon – scheduled to get on the 26th – can’t wait. Happy Holidays / Season’s Greetings / Merry Christmas / Happy Hannukkah / Happy Ramadan / Happy Soltice and Happy Festivus to all! May your little corner of the world be merry and bright. Best wishes for 2014
Emily says
Well now I know where at least some of my Christmas money is going.
I’ve gotten more and more attached to reading e-versions of books, but there are certain authors whose works I will always buy in dead-tree version, whether I’ve got an e-copy or not. *is super excited*
Ian Pound says
you are one of my top fav writers! and letting us know all of the things that you do is soooo nice! thanks. and clean sweep rocks. i will end up with all three formats ๐
Fan in California says
No apologies necessary regarding the price — just glad you have made it available in a hardcopy version since I haven’t quite gotten myself over to ebooks.
Looking forward to it!!!
Bill G says
Through ‘subtle’ hints I was gifted with a copy of the dead-tree version. It’s great!
