mostly instrumental? I like the Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core soundtrack, especially The Price of Freedom

Yes, also Dragon Age Inquistion soundtrack…Halo 5….some good stuff on Fallout 4. FF XV is pretty soft for the most part but there are a few “epic” tracks.

Also forgot about the elder scrolls soudtracks…Oblivion, Morrowind, Skyrim…

Kingdom of Heaven soundtrack – Crusaders?
More pop-sounding: Desert Rose – Sting, Azamane Tiliade – Bombino, Phantogram –
Run the Blood (get past the first 30 sec), You’re Mine, Destroyer. Maybe Nights of Allahambra – Loreena McKennit (ehh not maybe not epic).
CrisK says
I agree with the Loreena Mckennitt option (FYI, greatest singer of all time!). Her 1997 album, The Book of Secrets, is based on her travels across Siberia. “Night Ride Across the Caucasus” and the Russian chorus intro to “Dante’s Prayer” are good choices. The latter is particularly haunting.

Braveheart soundtrack, Gladiator soundtrack. Game of Thrones or Vikings soundtrack would be most excellent. Megitsune by Baby Metal is a fantastic song.
Patricia Schlorke says
I agree the the Braveheart soundtrack.

Say what you like about the film, but the soundtrack to Alexander can work quite nicely.
Hm, the Mass Effect 3 soundtrack could fit in there as well.
Possibly one or two songs composed by Yuki Kajiura might do, but dang it can’t think of their names right now.
It might possibly take a touch too pulpishly swashbuckler, but the Escaping the Island track from the Phantom soundtrack (of the Billy Zane film The Phantom) 😉
Crystal D Hill says
Assassin’s Creed (movie), Prince of Persia (any of the games), Wonder Woman, really any of Tina Guo’s albums, Lindsey Stirling’s everything as well, the instrumental bits of the Deadpool soundtrack, Nobuo Uematsu’s body of work (Final Fantasy is easily found on YouTube), the How to Train Your Dragon soundtracks,…I’m sure I’ll think of more at some weird moment later.

Any of the Final Fantasy soundtracks (FF-X is one of my favourites). You can also try any of the soundtracks from the “Tales” games (Tales of the Abyss or Tales of Zestiria).

Nicely vampiric and rocky? Try Hellsing!
Hellsing TV OST1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6ME57JkDuk&index=1&list=PLCD87C4810FD52B25
Nicely dynamic is Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex OST 1
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6E5AB17937AC0DA1
But I still like Aria the Animation/Natural/Origination and Haibane Renmei soundtracks best since those are mostly instrumental and full of emotions:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36DgAT5jWMY&list=PL6FVKZ3H3pn4Q5juDyWwQDKJR4jYncsl3
Free Bird, Blight, Ailes Grises are simply special. Anime series too.
Aria series is soooooo relaxing….

I see Two Steps From Hell so I don’t know if you haven’t already listened to their Nero album. United We Stand- Divided We Fall and Strength of a Thousand Men are amazing. I think similar to those songs is Halo Reach’s Lone Wolf which is one of my all time favorites.
There are some very good songs on the Doctor Who soundtrack especially for seasons 5 and 6. A big reason for enjoying those seasons was the soundtrack and the recurring theme song/melody in tracks such as Onwards, I Am The Doctor, 1969 and others.
The epic Persian song reminded me of Cesar Benito’s En Marruecos , which is also very good.
Penelope27 says
Ditto Dr. Who soundtrack. With titles such as, A Good Man Goes To War and under Closing Time, the track called Stormageddon, Dark Lord of All (who, in the show, is a baby called Alphie by his parents). I don’t think there is a bad track on the album.
Natalie says
This song isn’t instrumental but it always makes me think of Kate and Curran.
Karliene – Become the Beast
And these I thought sound series appropriate:
Karliene – Magic Dance
Ruelle – Deep End
Natasha Blume – Journey (Ready to Fly)

It has lyrics, but what’s kicking me in the head for a Kate song is “Children of the Sun” by Thomas Bergersen.

For more instrumental, Ivan Torrent (I think the Reverie album, but I’m not fluent with his album names) or the Blood+ OST might suit you, too.

For the dark side, Jane’s Addiction, “Had A Dad”. But Kate is also hilarious, Curran too, so for their lopsided “I love you let’s go kill something” romance how about Pink Martini’s “Never Stop Falling in Love”. I can totally see them slaughtering ghouls in slo-mo to it.

The Dances with Wolves or Band of Brothers soundtrack.

Florence + The Machine ; Breath of Life for Snow White and the Huntsman was great but they have plenty to choose from.

I love the Arslan Senki OST [aka Heroic Legend of Arslan OVA Original Soundtrack] from a while back, Persian instruments peppered throughout, from Japanese composer Norihiro Tsuru:
A couple examples
https://youtu.be/zXx-2u42QOw
https://youtu.be/HEqIpAv2VcA
It’s mainly instrumentals, for a high fantasy story around politics and war and love. Lots of high notes though and wind instruments. I wrote my Master’s Thesis to this.
Also, anything nearly by Japanese composer Yoko Kanno. I especially adore her Escaflowne soundtrack music like:
https://youtu.be/W_FeLLZ7eIU
This song of hers seems very Orf’s Carmina Burana o Fortuna to me:
https://youtu.be/O_49H_N43jQ
I have all the Escaflowne Soundtracks, and 20 years on I still listen to them all the time, she even used the sound of troops marching in formation as an instrument for the TV series opening song.
And really Howard Shore, especially the lighting of the beacons, but anything for Lord of the Rings

Kavinsky, here’s a sample if his stuff with Testarossa

I agree with the others about Rogue One, Wonder Woman, Braveheart, Dances with Wolves, and Gladiator if you want full movie soundtracks.
I have a few others: All three Lord of the Rings, especially in Fellowship of the Rings when getting to the Bridge of Kasa doom in Moria. King Arthur had some really good music (which Ilona already had listed).
This isn’t a soundtrack, but one song that I think could apply to anyone in Magic Talents: Undefeated by Def Leppard. I’ve been listening to that song a lot lately.
Mimi says
Rachmaninoff’s All Night Vigil. I like the Robert Shaw version but I have heard an all male Russian choir version that is completely different but equally compelling.

I can’t believe no-one has recommended Heather Alexander’s “March of Cambreadth” yet. You can’t really go wrong with a song about hacking into your enemies with swords and axes, and a cheery refrain of “How many of them can we make die?”

And, given the book title, there should be at least one song actually from Triumph. Maybe “Magic Power”?

My fave kick-butt music that really rocks is by Skillet. Songs I recommend are: Feel Invincible / Rise / Monster / Hero / Awake and Alive. Straight forward anthems without the teenage angst. I’ll put them all on my playlist for my Big-0 B-dy this Saturday. If you want songs from movie soundtracks, try Vangelis Themes (Chariots of Fire, Bladerunner, Bounty). For moody movie soundtracks, you want Danny Elfman. For suspense, a lot of the Nicolas Cage movie soundtracks will do. **Give us the mood you’re looking to create and I bet you’ll be surprised at the recommendations you receive **????

Add Never Gonna Die by Skillet /// For epic classical music, try Carmina Burana: O Fortuna *or* Richard Wagner’s Siegfried’s Funeral March (from Twilight of the Gods aka Gotterdaemmerung)

Wow, I’d say majority of what I’d recommend has already been mentioned!
You already know of Two Steps from Hell and Ivan Torren was mentioned. Of the same kind awesome music is also Thomas Bergessen, X Ray Dog & Audiomachine, just to name a few.
Also Zack Hemsey “See what I´ve become”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2UeA9Nus9Eg
Two Steps from Hell “Victory” has recently become my favorite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKRUPYrAQoE
From movie soundtracks you know of King Arthur Legend of the Sword, it really is amazing and LOTR, Gladiator, Braveheart & such were mentioned. Game of Thrones also got mentioned and even Goblin. Goblin really had quite a lot beautiful instrumental pieces.
Hans Zimmer, Linkin Park, Nightwish, Loreena Mckennitt & such also were mentioned.
From what hasn’t been mentioned I’ll probably go into what I like from Asia because they also have amazing music:
The K2’s main theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=enLILFJgVSE
From Empress Ki’s main theme (it’s really emotional, even if one hasn’t seen the drama, it could totally bring tears to one’s eyes): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3q-lj10fTQ
and also The Greatest Day (it’s sooo inspiring, like no matter how down you might be, you’ll survive & rise up): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArxgDHDcAVU
Yuki Kajiura was mentioned and I agree, she’s an amazing composer, has endless pieces of her own, soundtracks for anime and quite a few musicians/bands whom she’s founded and written for, some of the best pieces are:
A Song of Storm & Fire: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHydGnMQONI
Hear Our Prayer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oq854aWKrzs

and those ^ are really just a few, she has tons of more great stuff
Another great piece is from Scholar Who Walks the Night “Endless Run”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBa8vR5WFbA
The Moon Embracing The Sun had beautiful instrumental OST
Like Petal, Like Flame: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6TtDMGvS6c

Eurielle “City of the Dead”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VInr-cSNNU
Then I just recently discovered a band called Les Friction. They’re beyond amazing & great! Each song is a complete epic movie story! Like seriously, their songs are the PERFECT soundtrack!
And it would fit both Kate & Dina’s worlds pretty perfectly too considering the idea behind their work is:
“The year is 2048 AD. Humans are now able to leave their earthly home and travel to other dimensions. While traveling, a shell of their body remains on earth and functions at a reduced capacity.
For most people, life is more interesting and entertaining in these alternate dimensions; however, having neglected their loved ones at home, society on earth begins to deteriorate. Anarchy ensues and the travelers begin to receive millions of S.O.S.’s from their families on earth. Now, they must fight and struggle their way back home to save earth from certain destruction. Our story begins…………”

My visit would’ve been even better if it’d coincided with your signing at Powells!)

So weird, I had And had another post not show.
I recommend Japanese Composer Yoko Kanno’s score to the Escaflowne TV Series (also there’s a movie too she composed for it, great music, but the TV series is awesomely scored). She actually uses the sound of people marching as an instrument in the opening song! (I love that). You can hear the marching incorporated around the 2:05 mark:
https://youtu.be/4VfU4A0Qs6M
This song has a great, plotting, sneaking sort of feel to it: https://youtu.be/kmmydWaL-H8
It definitely has some great instrumental tracks for the fantasy / sci fi series, and some epic tracks that seem to me very inspired by Orf’s ‘Carmina Burana O Fortuna’ https://youtu.be/2Mmk5-BArIw This is battle music in the very best of the classical sense.

I’m a bit late, but I like a song from a wwe wrestler, yes I’m a wwe fan, anyways is more instrumental and I love it, the wrestler himself is Japanese so maybe the song would fit an Oriental character? I don’t know all I know is that is awesome and beautiful and when the song comes on the crowd goes wild and sings along, the main instrument used is the violin, the song is called The Rising Sun https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PJjZM5zFGuA
? Shinsuke Nakamura – The Rising Sun (Official Theme) – YouTube Hope you like it and give it a try ?
K Cheree Hulsman says
Hi Lily, on a side note I learned this one myself recently: the term Oriental is viewed as racist by the Asian community when used to describe people. I thought you might want to be aware of that.
I had seven different folks, complaining/crying/yelling at me when a work translation project had that word show up in a foreign project the company I was working for at the time was representing.
Magic Trix says
You learn new layers of political correctness every day. Each time I have to wrap my brain around it. This time it’s hard because I always equated “oriental” with a direction; the Orient is the East, the Occident is the West. So to me, an oriental is a person from the east, or from Asia. It’s about as racist as saying a person from Montana is a Northerner. Not trying to be argumentative, just trying to explain why something like this comes out of left field for me.
Lynn says
And when was the last time you referred to someone as Occidental?

Not hard rock by little people. Think Fili and Kili with an extremely loud garage band.

Interesting Ilona Andrews. I personally am a classical music person so I am always delighted when I run across classical music in a different genre. If you are into video game music maybe Dungeon Siege soundtrack or Age of Empires soundtracks would be helpful. I do not know about the latest as my wonderful new and improved [heavy nasty sarcasm] win10 has issues. I know you would think a Microsoft product would work with Microsoft products but I can tell you it is not so.
That music in the new Wonder Woman movie is Strauss. I love John Williams movie music as well as Henry Mancini. A lot of the older Disney movies have classical music ie Bald Mountain from Escape to Witch Mountain– the original not the new and improved movie.
In new age music there are a number of choices. I love Enya as do the dogs. Canadian Brass and Kenny G and Yanni.
Thanks for the hook into Antti Marikainen music last month.
