Muhahahahaha!
To make up for this horrible sentence, I have a slice of life anime to recommend to you. I don’t know why I haven’t come across it before, but if you want something cozy without lots of fighting or political intrigue but with magic and interesting relationships, check out Dahlia in Bloom
This was so fun and comforting. It gave me the first season of The Saint’s Magic is Omnipotent vibes. I loved it to pieces.
(I did not care for the second season of the Saint because they somehow forgot that she was an adult woman and wrote her romance arc as if she were 12.)

Thanks Ilona, something to take a break with

I must have done horrible things in my previous life, because I’m decades into my second love interest shipping sentence 😀

Oh noooooo! *faints

The love triangle video was great! Thanks for the morning chuckles!

There’s been a series of anime and manhwa about main characters, instead of turning into fighters, getting chosen by the “system” or the “new world” to run a food truck in a dungeon, or a hotel, or a b&b (Housekeeper in the Dungeon, my favorite). Also one anime with a dude who can’t fight, but can cook and gets sponsored by a giant demon dog to cook for him.
Anyways they all start with nothing and have to slowly level up to get rewarded so they can then expand or use better ingredients to take better care of the fighting class and I’m just HERE for it. 😋🥞☕️🏠

Cosy progressions are my jam too!

Campfire Cooking in Another World. One of my favorite animes.
Hannah says
I love that one, too. If you like that, you’d probably like Restaurant to Another World and Kakuriyo: Bed & Breakfast for Spirits (which can be summed up as, “I cooked my way into this mess and by god I will cook my way out of it.”)
I’m delighted that there’s an entire genre of “fantasy creatures try Japanese cooking and it blows their mind.”
Beth says
Both of these are some of my favorite light novels.
Hannah says
Oh my God it has an anime? I’ve just been reading the comic! Thank you for this, Ilona, I now have two new animes to watch!
Scott Patlin says
I’ve been enjoying The Wandering Inn (which I’m taking in as a series of audiobooks) in which the main character becomes an innkeeper and gets skills like “advanced cooking.” Not nearly as similar to Gertrude Hunt as one might expect…

I’m currently reading the Rise of the Cheat Potion Maker series while awaiting the new Beware of Chicken and Heretical Fishing entries next month. Half term next week so might be able to squeeze in some of these anime while child free.
Jukebox says
Loving all the suggestions! Can’t wait to check them out 🏃♀️💨
Patricia Schlorke says
No, not the love triangles! Anything but that! Nooooo!!!! 🫣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Patricia Schlorke says
I am picturing Arland sitting in a nice cozy chair reading Twilight muttering as he is reading. Maud just looks at him and shakes her head. 😀

Mwahahahaha!
for those who identify with the love triangle of doom, I do not recommend reading the Brontes, especially The Profeasor. Jane Eyre may be the exception, but Mr Prideful has to be suitably punished first by acts of god.
Richard says
Delicious in Dungeon is an anime I really enjoyed with a good story and great characters.
Sabrina says
Yup, I really liked that take on the genre!
Pang says
Agreed! I loved the first season of Saint’s Magic but the second season gave off a different vibe. There were moments they made Sei’s and Albert’s interactions kinda cringey.
Told my brother that I don’t really like watching action or high-risk anime anymore. The best I could explain why is that I stress out at work all day long and I just wanna go home and watch something relaxing like slice of life.
Also, big shout out to Horimiya. I highly recommend this anime.
Keera says
This looks good because I am slightly emotionally tired of some anime.
I have been literally parently supervising our youngest as he gets into Anime himself. His friends were giving him startling accurate descriptions of ones we wanted him to wait until he was older to watch. But here we are, and he doesnt have a cell phone or tablet so his friends are impressive story tellers and we needed to get ahead of it.
At present we are almost done with Attack on Titan. I could definitely use a break on something this seemingly light hearted.

I very much enjoy dahlia in bloom both the light novel and manga.
I think it is a cultural thing as both manwha and manga when falling into fantasy make adult women extremely childish when it comes to romance and sex.
Rachel says
I just recently watched that and it was cute, but I wasn’t super impressed. Ascendance of a Bookworm is where the bar is set for crafting isekai for me, though. Laid Back Camp is a great cozy show, too <3
Kelticat says
I’ve been reading the light novels(and manga) for Dahlia Rosetti and, depending on how close they remain to the source material, you are in for a treat.
Sabrina says
Sometimes in life, you just need all the fluff 🤷 go with the flow! I used to go Regency Romance as my comfort read go-to, but I seem to have drifted away from that. Perhaps I should try cozy anime instead, worth a shot 😊
Jenn says
Ok so I fell into that love triangle hell recently. I should have trusted the warnings but I didn’t! Now I know only IA is safe for me. And maybe Jeanine frost…
Scott says
I don’t know if you have seen it but try campfire cooking in another world
Jan says
Dahlia is indeed fun, though I’ve not seen the anime. (I have read several of the novels though.) One thing I can say is that all the characters must have amazingly effective livers as they seem to drink about 2-3 bottles of wine every day (sometimes more).
As a character though, Dahlia is definitely an admirable magitech.

For a lighthearted office romantic comedy/farce manhwa, I like “A Business Proposal.” But the TV adaptation is a stinker.
Chris Neko says
the LN is good but sadly Not more as 8 books the 9 is still Not in english….

If you are looking for an anime that really hits you in the feels and is still comforting to watch, I recommend Frieren – Beyond Journey‘s End. It‘s simply outstanding.
Pang says
I second this! The soundtrack is just chief’s kiss for the entire season. I looked it up and of course it’s the same music composer for Violet Evergarden, which happens to be the only other anime soundtrack I have bought.
Simon Walker says
Absolutely Dahlia is great a strong young lady prospering through her own ideas, mistakes and saying the wrong things at the right time!
Ray Williams says
really good.

Love the suggestions! I super enjoyed The Apothecary Diaries, and season two comes out soonish, and Fruits Basket.
Tiapet says
Ha – evil sentence!
Thank you, love to get recommendations – looks like there are some good ones in the comments too.
Emily says
OOO MY GOSH!! I love this series I have read all the light novels that are out for Dahila in Bloom, it like a comfy blanket in a book. If you like the anime you will love the light novels—. Just fyi – one story can have multiple formats— anime is the animated version of the story— manga/manhwa is the picture with words version—light novels is the just a written version no pictures
bege says
Thanks; I had wondered about the differences.
K says
7th Time Loop is another good anime
Peter Lauren says
That is literally my worst nightmare. I do not enjoy love triangles as a rule, but this kind of love triangle is worth a DNF no matter the medium
Katie says
Don’t feel too bad about not seeing Dahlia in Bloom until recently! It was last season’s simulcast (July through September) on Crunchyroll so it’s still new. 🙂
Eva says
Thank you for all the cooking/food anime and manga recommendations in this chat! I love them and there are some here I haven’t checked.
I am hooked on Hero’s Diner – a webtoon on Tapas about an OP hero who returns to earth after saving another dimension and opens a diner. He cooks delicious ordinary food and terrible tasting magic food that has a leveling up affect. Hilarious and very low-stress with a cute found family.
Please keep the recommendations coming!
Deb says
Please tell me all of you have watched Frieren – beyond journey’s end. The story, the characters, the animation… *chef’s kiss*
Maxi says
The problem with Dahlia in Bloom is that the book series is on the 9th volume and the romance has not progressed even one bit. It is not a slow burn romance, it is a non-existing romance. I gave it up.
