Update: Adventurous lawyer was found. Thank you!
::waves:: Usually when we are writing fictional contracts, we use real life boilerplates. Unfortunately, we need a contract which gives one party the authority to shut down a building site if someone is murdered and the other parties involved refuse to cooperate with the private investigator.
It’s very hard to find “in the event of a magical murder don’t impede PI” contract boilerplate.
If you are a lawyer and don’t mind writing a couple of paragraph of legalese with magic flavor, we would be delighted to buy an hour or two of your time. Please email me at email@example.com with subject Legal Help in the title. We can only choose one person, so please don’t be offended if someone else beats you to the punch.

Your life is SO interesting!!
+1 I was thinking that with the dog pee but adding in the lawyer needs makes it even more true!
Lol. You may never finish any books now. Lawyers like to talk and talk and add things………????????????
“Legalese with Magic Flavor”yasssss my wonder fabbo writer friends. Made. My. Day. Will be enjoying this idea.
So, can the lawyer put that down on their resume? “Expert in writing contracts involving Magical Crimes and Misdemeanors”.

I wish I was a Lawyer !!!! What a line on a job app.
My father was a corporate attorney. Sadly, he passed away in November. This would have delighted him to discuss.
First time in my life I’ve regretted not going to law school.
+1 (and it was something I never even considered) ????
And I regret that I’m only in my first year of law school! I did well in Contracts I, but I just started Contracts II!
Reading a UF author’s blog post is often an interesting adventure:)
LOL, let me know if you need someone to do some creative medical writing. Though some of the clinical trial protocols I read and have to provide feedback on verge on fiction. ‘Yes, your protocol inclusion and exclusion criteria would be the ideal patient population to answer the research question. However these patients do not exist, and even if they did, they would not be willing to undergo 3 CAT scans, 4 bronchoscopies and biopsies to participate in a clinical trial.’
Oh man! I came to this too late!
OTOH, I would only be setting something up that complies with Ontario law (Canada).
But it would have been soooo much fun.
Congrats to the lawyer who swooped in quickly!!
(Also, for once it is WONDERFUL that I’m not the joke –being a lawyer)
This made me laugh so hard because I am also Canadian and thinking how our law would differ ????
MZ I too spend my days reading CT protocols and your reply is spot on! Did you make it to PRIM&R this year? The IRB Pop booth was epic.
Can’t wait to read about contracts involving magical murder and our favorite PIs.
Same here but English law, which may be even more differ ent! (Or not, I don’t really know)
Argghh, I should have paid more attention at Law School and continued my studies…
Well, I can’t go back in time to let my young self know, so I won’t be able to help you, more than wait patiently for the pleasure to read that chapter.

Thank you, Ilona Andrews for the post. I am sure you will find an adventurous lawyer that has passed USA bar exam.
One of my nephews is aiming to be a future lawyer or future felon (Dad said in which case he would be buried under courthouse in a keyless cell). So far he is walking the straight and narrow. One of his brothers got addicted to pain pills while being treated for TBI so he has had his eyes opened.
Good luck on your quest.
What fun. How interesting.
Sounds like progress is being made somewhere.
Reading this blog is always interesting, lots of interesting chats around the water cooler, giggles behind the monitors, and happy Friday smiles. Enjoy the weekend!
Ah you found one or I would have told my retired business. lawyer friend to contact you

I keep imagining this adventurous lawyer accidentally leaving a copy of this fictional contract lying around the office and what the reactions of coworkers would be. ????????

Oh, I love it! A bit like two authors discussing murder methods over dinner out.
Am totally there for you pro bono for any surgical/medical advice or background – so love how authentic yall stay!!
The whole subject matter and responses made my day! Thanks everyone!
All legalize should have a magic flavor!! Lol
See that’s what love about you two. Now when I come to that part in the book I will smile and remember this post.
Oh yes! Fun to be in on the background to your stories!
Wish I was a lawyer too!
Neither here nor there but my father-in-law was Fire Chief in a rural Ky. volunteer fire department . He always had interesting stories to tell , and he told me that when the fire department is called to a fire on a property they ” own” that property until the fire is out and they leave. He was the only fire fighter I have ever known , one of the “greatest” generation and a truly amazing man. If you know a fire fighter ask for a story, I expect they all have some tell.
Wouldn’t limit it to magic. They’d just use mundane means. ????
Damm, pickec the wrong profession! Will be more than happy to help if you ever need any help with UK accounting!

I wish I had seen this sooner! Happy to help in the future if you need more legal stuff!
Ilona I see from the fan comments (didn’t see yours) that you found someone. If it doesn’t work out, my hubby is an AV-rated attorney, licensed in Texas with 20 years of experience and will do it for free because he thinks it sounds like fun.

First time in my career that I regretted the decision to become a poli sci professor and not a lawyer!!!
