Magic Bites was published on this day, exactly 15 years ago.

Technically we sold Questing Beast to a magazine before that, but it was published much later. Magic Bites was our first professionally published work, and it launched a series of 10 novels, with 3 novel-length spinoffs, not to mention numerous novellas and short stories. Over the years, the series sold millions of copies, had been translated into 18 languages, and attracted the coolest fandom ever.

It’s been a wild ride. Thank you for reading about Kate and the wild adventures of her family and friends. We have more fun things for you coming in the future, and we hope you will keep visiting the first world we made.

    Gunmetal Magic is my absolute favorite of the Kate Daniels stuff – it’s the only one I’ve bought in hard copy. I enjoyed how you worked it so they could stick to the letter of the villain’s demands and still get around them. And I absolutely loved Roman in that book. I am SERIOUSLY fond of several of the other characters, so that he’s my favorite there says a great deal.

    And the novella that kept Kate and Curran mostly busy offstage was also fun.

    • Flirty Roman is EPIC! I reread his scenes in Gunmetal Magic from time to time too, although I generally begrudge that he prefers blondes 😉

  77. 11 years ago, my sister in law included a copy of Magic Strikes in a big bag of paperbacks she gave me. I was bed bound recovering from a badly broken leg at the time. Have no memory of what else was in that bag, but have a copy of everything they have produced and Ilona and Gordon are my very favorite most authors. It’s really difficult finding other authors that even come close to the bar they have set. Their generous sharing on this website makes them feel more like friends. While I love all the different stories, the KD universe will always be so special.

  88. Happy anniversary! I love reading anything y’all write. All I have to hear or think of “Here, Kitty, Kitty” and begin to grin. I start to think of my glasses and think of Dali (she and I have much in common!) and love the grit and steel of Andrea. I dream of the delights of Baha-Char and little vampires slicing hamstrings. Occasionally tiny foxes come dancing thru with their entourages. And, whenever I go pick my grapefruit, I think of a werewolf marking territory in an apple orchard. We no longer have a Costco membership, but when we did I would look twice at anyone in the refrigerator section.

  104. Happy crystal anniversary. Fifteen years! It seems like just yesterday when I first saw the paperback on the US new releases shelf and decided to give it a try. Good old Forbidden Planet, these days I don’t need to search for paper imports I can download files. Maybe in another fifteen years I’ll be able to just wire the words direct to my brain!

  105. Happy 15th Anniversary! KD was the first of your series I read and it remains my favorite. Thanks for creating such a great world with characters that pop out of the page. I am always thrilled to revisit the world whenever you publish in it. Like old friends who you may not hear from in a while but you pick up right where you left off the time between visits just disappears.

    KD has been a favorite since I found it. (I think I had to wait for Book 3 – no I never remember the actual titles of the books in proper order – but not long.)

    You two do, hands down, some of the best world building ever. Your books grab me and roll me under into the new reality in half a page or less. I love all your series and have all of them in at least one medium and usually two.

I had previously read only the story in Must Love Hellhounds. Your books have been reliable comfort reads ever since. I’ve never needed them more than this past winter, which incidentally is still hanging grimly on, and they haven’t failed me yet. Thank you so much for everything. Unable to recall when or where I started with the series, it matters little to me but what matters is I did begin reading the series. (I take that back, it might be from my local library and yes the cover caught my attention)
    I’ve the KD paperbacks & 1 oddball hard cover (yah that’s a library purchase due to coffee incident ????) in a ready to go canvass tote, in case of natural erm event in my earthquake area. I’ve added other HA paperbacks to the original stash, now might need backpack ????????‍♀️

  193. By the time Magic Rises came out I was finishing up packing for a cross country move and I remember sitting in the middle of that mess and reading. My anxiety for Kate coupled with moving anxiety kept pinging around my chest. Lol, such little faith. I swear I haven’t questioned a direction since!

    Hope your self-publishing venture goes well. Like most of the BDH, I’m always delighted to see a new release no matter the length, although, to be honest, the longer the better.

  202. Happy anniversary! I have already read them at least 5 times each book (much more for my favorites). I am French and I didn’t like the first French covers (now there are much better). It had a sentimental vibe and at that time I wanted an heroin who kicked ass. On Amazon, someone advised to not take into account the cover because it didn’t reflect the story. The best advice ever. I never regretted it. Thank you for being such amazing writers.

  206. Congrats! My friend convinced me to try KD when we both lived in rural Japan. I devoured them. That was a very hard year, and KD made it a little easier.

  230. That is so crazy! About 4 days ago i started missing the early Kate/Curran books, read book one and im now up to and re-reading book 7 now (which is one of my favorites). This isnt so weird, ive re-read the entire series like 6?times

    They are all so good!!!! But i especially love the ones after Kate and Curran are solid as a couple. Book 5 i think it was, about broke my heart where they went to Europe.

    Anyway, they are my comfort read. Which IS weird. All the violence should be upsetting. But when life gets hard, they are there for me. Life just did again, (mom moved into hospice on saturday, family member having severe mental health crisis) and there they are.Kate and Curran, kicking ass, taking names, and always on the side of good.I needed the distraction.

    KD has inspired, delighted, enlightened and entertained for these 15 years. I will also be grateful to my friend who owned a small bookstore in my neighborhood who on one of my visits said, “Try this new author. I think that you will really like them”. She was right. I have devoured every scrap that the two of you have written (that I can locate). I have read all of your books at least twice. Well, more than that because when the publication date of a new book in a series is announced, I re-read the series to familiarize myself with the characters and storylines. Since I teach English full-time and endorsement classes for my district at night, I am grateful that I read quickly with 90% comprehension. Your books have taken me on journeys as I was recovering from major car accidents that drastically reduced my physical capabilities for a period of time. Your stories took me to another place where for a time I was so engrossed I was able to ignore the pain that was my constant companion! Also, your books have so many subtle nuances they always fully engage my mind no matter how many times I have read the story! THANK YOU! That forgetfulness was a precious gift. You deserve every success and I hope that you are well-rewarded!

    I am just in the process of another series re-read.

    I learned of Magic Bites from a friend of mine. He told me to stop reading whatever I was into and read Magic Bites. He said it was so good and the vampires were the most original twice on the lore he’d ever seen. I listened to him and have loved the series since the first read through.

    I do miss reading new stories of Kate and Curran’s adventures and I love anything from the KD world – I look forward to any and all future stories.

    She isn’t a superficially “strong” female lead with no real substance to her character to back her up. She is an amalgam of strong, humble, smartass, sarcastic, always learning and progressing, insecure but confident with a touch of self-deprecation, immensely courageous despite her flaws and vulnerabilities, which makes her feel genuine and admirable. I love her and the world and characters you have built around her.

  261. How can we not revisit it? The amazing part is when you go back to that first book, how much of the KD universe we see in the later books is there, the characters and the working of that world.

    And the first book holds a deep place in my heart for the snark Kate gives Curren, how can you forget Kate shaking a bag of kibble and saying ‘here kitty kitty’, or when she uses her sword to weld his weights to the weight bench?

    I know you guys have said that there are things you don’t like w the first book, but as a reader it doesn’t show to me at all. I have read a lot of experienced authors that I like, that don’t have the complete package your first book does.

    And all I can say is, you might look at MB and cringe at some of it, but if you read my (deservedly) unpublished novel, you shoulders and facial expression would be a permanent cringe, I promise you:) ( would be like every mothers warning ‘don’t do that, it might get stuck like that!)

    • Hi Katie. So I was watching a C-drama the other day about a group of professional video game players. The lone girl on the team saw a pretty woman approach the guy she liked. The entire team saw it happen and one of her male teammates warned everyone that when the girl washed her her that night, the water would run green.

      I got it, because I watched a lot of C dramas. 🙂 But watching dramas doesn’t really give me a solid understanding of what it is like to be from East Asia or to be an American of East Asian descent. A lot goes into making a character authentic. I get away with my portrayal of Russians because I was born and raised there. I get away with my portrayal of Americans because I am one.

      So the real question here is, would you trust me to portray someone like you as a heroine? Would you have confidence that this portrayal would be accurate? Would it be what you hoped for? All good questions.
