I’m going for the longest blog title record today.
It’s the release day for Clean Sweep graphic novel!
I remember attending a video writing seminar with Ilona and Gordon years ago – before I got to know them or became Mod R (my final form) – and asking them if they had professional wishes which hadn’t yet materialized. Gordon reached out a hand and brought out a graphic novel from their shelves and said: “This! I would love to see our work as a graphic novel or comic.”
Well, yesterday I got to send them a link to someone’s excited post about receiving their Clean Sweep graphic novel one day early. Full circle there hehe.
Congratulations, House Andrews! And to many more wishes coming true (especially when it means more stuff for the Horde to devour).
Some order links: Amazon Kindle | Amazon Paperback | BN | Apple Books
The graphic novel is the Tapas model turned into an ebook and paper book. You can see a video of someone browsing it here. It’s volume one, the first half of the Tapas run, as it was too long to fit in one book. Volume 2 will probably be around October-ish.
Giveaway
Ilona beloves us so she got her hands on some of the cool sticker sheets that were a prize for the US-only giveaway by Andrews McMeel Publishing. So we’re holding another giveaway and this time we’ll have 5 international winners (outside US).
To enter, comment below and tell me what is the first thing you would do if you were a guest at Gertrude Hunt and also your country of residence. The giveaway will be open for a week.
I’m not entering, but I have one word for you and that word is: DONUTS.
Ok, here’s another five: good luck and happy reading!
Swati says
Amazing.
Alina says
ok, if I were a Guest, I think ill ask Dina to take me shopping to Baha Char
or ask Orro to make me the best chocolate chip cookies ever
i cant decide!
Argentina in tha houseeeee
Swati says
Was I possibly the first to comment? Wow! But anyway once again would just like to say – thank you so much for your wonderful books.
Susanna says
First thing would probably be to see what kind of room Dina would make me, but after that I would go to eat something Orro made.
From Finland
Faith says
This is exactly what I thought!!! I would want to absorb the room, pondering if I learned something about myself from the design. I’d then want to have some or Otto’s wonderful food.
I wondered if I might ask Dina if I could pet Beast (dog lover here), but wasn’t sure if that would cross an edicate line…
USA, Illinois
Mysti says
I would love to see a bedroom/library Dina would make me. I am unfortunately in the US but I still wanted to answer the question 😀 good luck to y’all over the pond
Angela Do says
Before I even read your comment about “DONUTS” my first thought was eating Orro’s food especially a donut. Great minds think alike!
Moderator R says
I even know which one I want to ask for, and it’s not one of the Officer Marais ones! It’s the small emerald green donut he made for Tony at the beginning of Sweep of the Heart. What flavor is green? Is it lime, is it green apple, is it mint, is it some Baha-charian creation of alien flavor?
It would be Tony, Gaston and me, the gastro-triplets 😀
Chris says
Have a meal from Orro. Great minds think alike! I had to laugh at your Donut comment. I think I would also love to see how Gertrude Inn would read me and build my personalized room. Hmmm. I am an Ex-Pat living in the Southern Alps of Japan.
Good Luck everyone!
Hannah says
I would go see how my room was prepared!
Country of Residence: USA
Becky says
I would look at the photo of Dina’s parents to see if I recognized them.
Moderator R says
Hehe! Good reference!
Kim Schommer says
I totally agree with eating Orro’s food! But I would love a tour first! Thanks for the chance and congratulations!!

I want to see the ballroom! Maybe attend a fancy ball there.

Can’t decide between eating Orro’s food and just exploring the inn to see if the physics break my brain 😂
I’m in the UK.
Angela says
The first thing I would do is ask to help envision my room. I love the idea of building a room for my dreams…
Alexandra says
Congratulations on this Happy Book Birthday! So much hard work and effort from EVERYONE involved!
The first thing I would do to when arriving? I would have to thank them and Gertrude Hunt for their hospitality and then I would love to go to my room to see and get design tips for a restful bedroom.. and then nap ‘cuz I never seem to get a easily or well and I’m all for that.
Kat Meservy says

Good luck everyone! I would beg to see my room being made! Then I would run to the food! Lololol.

Breann says
I’m in the US, so I don’t think I get to enter, but it would be EVERYTHING! Just kidding, I know that’s not answer. Ok, Orro’s food first. Snacks/meals all the way. 🤤
Happy Book Birthday to House Andrews! I’m glad that Gordon got his wish fulfilled! 🥳
Alexandra says
It seems there would be quite a congregation in the kitchen.
I would most definitely first sample whatever Oreo has on offer, But then I would like to explore my room an the rest of the inn.
I’m from Germany btw.
Mary says
Take a walk through the apple trees with beast
Tempest says
The first thing? I think perhaps an Orro-produced tea (with all the goodies). Then off to see the glorious room that Dina has prepared for me.
(Not entering — I pre-ordered, so I’m good.)
Also, ModR, are you sure that this is your final form?
Moderator R says
Definitely the most powerful 😀 . I have a Mod Hammer and everything!
Patricia Schlorke says
After reading your comment Mod R I thought “so, you’re now the Thororator.” 😁🔨
Tempest says
Just wanted to be sure that we were leaving room for ever-evolving superpowers. 🙂
Angela says
I’m sure Mod R can level up, her power ups just won’t be as physically evident 😂
kels says
The first thing I’d do if I were a guest at Gertrude Hunt is track down The Ripper of Souls for some snuggles.
This comment is coming at you alllll the way from Canada 🥰
christina savva says

Sophie says
This looks amazing! I read the Tapas version but I like hard copies for graphic novels so will be buying this too.
by the way, as anyone heard from Arcane Society about when the box will be shipped? wondering if they’ve updated it to anything more specific than “probably March”
Moderator R says
It just says “This will ship in March 2024.” on the website. So, definitely this month, but I know they had thousands of orders, so luck of the draw if yours is one of the earliest shipped 🙂
Liam says
That’s seriously great news, all the orders! I love to hear the back-end parts of writing and publishing and getting books onto hands, and I know that pre-orders and first-month sales are super important.
It’s similar in video games, except we also track first year sales — a game might have bad press, but sell 8mil copies over its first year, which is enough of a success to get funding for a sequel. On the other hand, I’m used to games that have about 1,000 people working on them in total over 3 years, so it’s… not quite book writing. We do have story and narrative departments though!
LauraKC says
First, I would like to see what Dina designed for my room. I hope I get a view of the orchard! (In terms of food, it would be a toss up between one of the egg dishes, or a fast food hamburger reject!). I’m in Canada!
Amanda says

Greetings from Canada!
Inese says

Take a walk through the apple orchard and have a cup of tea while watching all the inn shenanigans unfold 🙂 I’m from Germany
Donna A says
I’d just happen to arrive at lunchtime and mention I’m hungry (wink, wink 😜) while envisioning my room as a treehouse library and bribing Caldenia to sit with me by employing the mysterious Mello Yello (which other than a canned beverage I’m still fuzzy on because I’m in the UK which is where you can send the stickers WINK, WINK, WINK 😉).
If winks count for anything. . . .
Darlene says
If I ever had the opportunity to enter Gertrude Hunt would be run to Orro’s Domain, plunk down in the nearest chair and state, “Orro, I’m famished, please feed me!!!”
Of course, he would already have food and drink placed in front of me before I got to “I’m”
LOL
I live in the USA
Judy Siud says
I’m from US, so don’t know if I can enter. But after I checked into the Inn, I would look at my special room then ask Dina to take me to Baha-char. I want to look at the other shoppers and stores and check out the Yarn shop that Dina had mentioned. And buy some some beautiful yarn. Afterwards I want to have lunch that Orro created and chat with Caldenia.
Anika Shain says
The first thing I would do is ask to see the room created for Hiru. Floating in a pool looking at an Alien Aurora Borealis, It seemed like one of the most beautiful rooms Dina created.

I m partial on the donut front – but an Orro special lemon muffin…… and I hope the ripper of souls might sneak into the most amazing room Dina would have made up for me and have some cuddles. Tais S says
I’m in Brasil, and the first thing I would do is ask for no! heat!
I want a personal weather bubble to follow me around everywhere on the premises, rigged with a perfectly chilly temperature. Gods, I don’t want to sweat anymore, I want this summer to endddd 😭
Julene says
WOW, well it’s a toss up between having would would probably be the having the best meal of my life and in my custom room having the best sleep of my life. Everything else about the Gertrude Hunt would be icing on that cake!!
Canada! (the soggy west coast – ugh, no more snow/sleet)
Thanks for the opportunity. I am looking forward to this as I had issues with Tapas cutting off portions so I could not read it online. (and I prefer hard copies, tbh, cause I am old school).
Terry says
Ooh can I get a ride in the koo-koo cage? That always makes me think of the scene from Toy Story with the coin-operated arm picking up the aliens…
Then a mango-inspired dish from Orro. Yum.
Georgia says
Happy bookday!
The very first thing I’d do in Gertrude Hunt is try desperately to see if I could rearrange my room, realise that’s terribly rude & then track down Caldania to people watch with a sharing bag of fun yuns and a 6 pack of mello yellow.
Georgia says
and because I’m an idiot who can’t read apparently I’m really hoping that adding that I’m in England here doesn’t discount me from the give away 😬

It won’t, no worries 😊

USA. I actually did visit and the first thing I did was ask to play a game of Dominion Chess with Caldenia. Fortunately Orro decided we needed snacks and brought my favorite, his mango ice cream! I needed it as Caldenia was crushing me. I left the Inn to go to Daesyn to attend the wedding of Maude and Arland. I can’t wait for the Lantern Vigil to the bridal tree! The Innkeeper Universe is my favorite to visit. I highly recommend staying at Gertrude Hunt! Enjoy your stay.

Hello from the Philippines! I confess, I would immediately want to see Baha-char. After exploring, I would have a yummy snack from Orro, then see the room that Dina had prepared for me.
Vino says
I agree with Lilith that I’d ask to head straight out to Baha-char. Rooms are great but the opportunity to see a sunny new world wins hands down!
From cold UK
Moderator R says
Omg, I miss the sun so much in London. The last vitamin D drop in my body died of loneliness and my nose is frozen. Ilona made me so jealous saying they’re having such a warm spring they need to turn on the AC already. Imagine, golden light instead of fluorescent grey skies!
Patricia Schlorke says
If those of us in Texas could bottle up the warm, sunny weather we’re having, and send it to the Horde members in the UK, we would. 🌅🥰

Bonjour!
I am probably disqualified from this giveaway (because Quebeckers are banned from ALL contests outside of our province, due to ridiculous government regulations 🙄) but anywho…
As heavenly as it would be to taste something from Orro’s cuisine, it would be more fun to request a slice of Dina’s cake and see how long it would take for her to sneak into the forbidden domain to get it done! 😏😉😋

I really want to stroll to Baha-char too 😊.
Congrats HA and especially Gordon for a dream come true 👏.
Frances says
I enjoyed the graphic novel but was disappointed when it finished half way through the story as there was no advice on the purchase site that this was only part 1 of the story.I think the publishers are a bit cheeky charging $ 13.99 ( Australian = $ 9.08 US) for half the story so I hope House Andrews were well remunerated for their creativity.
I quite enjoyed the “ comic” version though Sean and Arland looked more teenage boys than tough soldiers. I wondered is that graphic comic style to draw people like that? Plus Mod R could you explain why sometimes Dina and Sean are drawn like little comic children? I’m an older reader and only used to comics rather than graphic novels.
Moderator R says
Yes, those are manga and anime handsomeness standards at play with Sean and Arland 🙂.
As for the childlike drawings, it’s called chibi style and it is used as comic relief in manga and anime, giving additional emphasis to a character’s emotional reaction, mostly in funny contexts- usually embarrassment or cute outrage 🙂.
Jessa Niekrash says
I would eat something made by Orro! Then settle into a room with books and a fireplace, overlooking the orchard. I live in the US.

I can’t wait for my copy of the book to arrive. Amazon U.K. says it’ll be shipping towards the end of the month though so I have a little longer to wait.
I would love to see what kind of room Dina would dream up for me so that would be my first stop at the Inn but I’d definitely be heading to the kitchen not long after to taste some of Orro’s amazing creations. I think I’d start with eggs three ways but there would have to be a donut or two for dessert.
Thanks for the giveaway! I’m in the U.K. (England if you want specifics)

If the chef agrees, I would request Dina’s egg sandwiches from book 1. I am in the US.

After the last couple months I had at work, I’d probably want to hole up and have _nobody talk to me_ for at least 72 hours. Just me, a clean and airy room, a water feature, a library and Orro’s cooking, no questions asked. Heaven. I’d probably be ready to explore more adventurous and exotic places in the Inn after that 😉

I would be so excited to be in the Inn I don’t even know what would I do first. Maybe meet Orro and have some of his delicious food on the patio with Dina and Caldenia, enjoying the view of the apple trees. Anyway, I’d first enjoy Orro’s food and drink on the back porch with Diana and Sam, especially to give Gertrude time to build the for me individualized room. I would love to know what that looks like…
Greetings from Germany. 😘

I would ask Dina for a toddler play room where I could safely unleash my two-year-old twinsand a resting chair for a tired Mom. She did so well with Wing’s room, I’d love to see what she comes up with for my children.
With the bags under my eyes I probably wouldn’t even have to ask her for that. She’d take a look at me, then my kids’ mischievous smiles and understand precisely what our family needs…
Greetings from Austria!
Liam says
Ohh, twins. I so hear you. I had primary care of my twin nieces when they were 3, and between the sleep deprivation and watching Frozen/Tangled 4423424235 times, I honestly don’t remember a while lot of details. Which us sad now, because giving them back was like tearing my own heart out.
They’re 10 now and so kind and compassionate and weird and funny and I’m so fortunate to be in their lives! They come over for sleepovers so their mom can get some rest, and we started doing Lego builds on Skype during the pandemic and never stopped. It lets them chat away, I get to hear all about their lives, it’s wonderful.
But… yes. At 2 they were either simultaneous crying or egging each other on, you’d get one down and the other would start up.
I hope you can get some rest and some extra sets of hands! After a while I was tossing them at anyone so I could go pee without an audience talking through or sticking their fingers under the door…
They do eventually settle a bit, and figure out they have speeds other than “stampede”. Unfortunately I think that took until they started kindergarten to start to sink in…
(What slowed them down the best was having an elderly cat who was easily scared. One if the girls was DETERMINED to make friends with her, so we did a lotof quiet sitting and not-looking-at-you with treats. Her smile the day my sweet old lady climbed into her lap us one of the best memories I have <3 ).
Good luck! You're doing awesome!
Janeen Horne says

Liam says
Happy happy book birthday!
I live in Canadaland.
I’d definitely want to check out my room, both because I love Dina’s flair for decor matching the person even if she doesn’t know them well, and because I would have asked for something that might help relieve my chronic back pain. I can just picture melting into a bed, cradled perfectly in such a way that the pain would, if not be gone, definitely be lessened.
That plus a hot tub = bliss! That always works wonders unknotting the muscles that are so upset just after sitting up all day, nevermind things more strenuous.
My One Orange Brain Cell cat would likely make a break for it at some point and encounter other guests or permanent residents, and if a very helpful and moderately gay vampire knight or other so inclined non-human guest gallantly offered to assist me (especially in unwrapping my cat from someone’s arm), well. I’d just have to find a way to thank him/them.
I mean, if I already have my cat with me, there really is no reason to go back home except Stuff! Maybe it would be the start of a whole new adventure. No matter what, though, I know it would be one heck of a good time 🙂
(My cat would require sun puddles to nap in no matter what side we were facing, people to pet him, laps to sleep in, and general adoration and adulation. But he gets that all the time.)
Huntece says
First thing would be to eat whatever delicious meal is prepared by the master chef Orro.

I’d ask Orro to make me some flan. I haven’t found any that was truly good in the past 20 years….sigh.

Ask to have afternoon tea in the ocean dining room, with a view looking out over kolinda 🙂 UK

The first thing I would do is play with Beast if Dina okayed it! I am in the USA, Montana

Julie Molzahn says
Have tea in the kitchen watching Orro cook and Her Grace Caldina spar. USA
eXavier Peterson says
So many choices for the inn comment. I would wish to have a lighted warm pool to swim in with a view above of a night of shooting stars and other cosmic events, while having a swim up dining ledge with Orro’s eggs three ways, tea with biscuits, and mimosas made of mango and sparkling white wine.
Congratulations on the graphic novel release!
Canada
Lisa T. says
I would be eating whatever Orro wants to cook and then I’d want to go to the market where I could get killed. LOL
Moderator R says
Noooo, Dina would have your back! 😀
Jennifer says
Happy book birthday!! Pets are welcome, yes? I would request that the Inn tire my puppy out! whilst my elder doggo and I get to watch from a safe distance and, of course, enjoy the Inn’s hospitality ourselves. Team Orro for the win! Until then, going to eat GF lemon blueberry muffins fresh from the oven and read my new graphic novel while furry ones recover from rainy day walk. [USA, so best of luck to international horde]
Patricia says
I’d love to help Dina in her gardens! Then, I’d go to Orro’s kitchen for breakfast! And I’d like to be introduced to Olasard.
I’m from U.S.A.

David says
I think the first thing would be to just appreciate the inn, unless I had travelled in the TARDIS, where else would physics just provide flexible guidelines rather than laws? It would be amazing. I would also like to experience Oreo’s seventh attempt to produce a double Grand Burger with cheese.
From England.
Stephenie says
So I’ve just sat down (over the last 4 weeks) and read the entire Innkeeper Series. Can we expect another? It seems like the arc isn’t finished. Dina hasn’t found her parents but she does know they’re alive. If there is a plan for another, is there a time line?
Moderator R says
The Innkeeper series is not over 🙂 . There will be at least one more full-size novel, but not for a while, as other projects take precedence. The Innkeeper books are usually serialized on the blog first, so this is the best place to hear about them.
Angela Holly says
I’d ask Orro to make me a dessert buffet!
(USA)
Midge says
Hi, I live in the US. If I was able to visit Gertrude Hunt I would be so excited. The first thing I would have to do is make sure I met Orro and let him know how much I was looking forward to tasting all his foods but especially desserts! I’d also ask if I could watch him bake sometime. Maybe I’d learn some techniques and wonderful recipes. Even if I didn’t, just watching a Red Clever Chef in the kitchen would be amazine!
Jaclyn says
I am from Canada and I would ask Orro 🦔 if he would make a mango cheesecake. I may only be human, but I do still love my mangoes!
AJ says

Moderator R says
Drop bears, drop bears, what’chu gonna do, what’chu gonna do when they drop on you 😀
Charlotte says
Dear authors
I want to say I enjoy all your books and have them all in multiple formats. In the graphic novel version, please ask the artist not to draw officer Maris so dark. I could barely make him out on the page. He blends right in the background. Or please don’t make the background so dark. I do hope this does not come across as complaining. I only wish the best for you and family and ModR.
Moderator R says
Thank you for the feedback, Charlotte, we will pass it on to the publisher 🙂
Cathy R. says
I would ask to visit the apple orchard and sit by the pond enjoying a gluten free (o have celiac) selection of Orro’s lemon muffins and chocolate donuts. Somewhere in the galaxies he would have the ingredients to make those!

Oh, my! The FIRST thing I would do is pay my respects to Her Grace, Caldenia Ka Ret Magren, because yeah…and then I would hope for a lemon muffin from Orro. Greetings from the U.S.

thank them for having me and ask (i’m not sure if this would be against the questing laws) if i could invite my mum and dad so they could use the meditechs that Maud gave them to get rid of all the aches and pains that 84 years olds have.
(not asking for a longer life – nice thought – but just a more pain free one so they can enjoy getting out more and the kids, grandkids and great grandkids)
wouldn’t mind asking for my husband and myself too but lets not be greedy here
sarah hindson says
I would have a helping of Orro’s eggs – UK , love and reread your books all the time xxx

I’m in the US.
Katie says
Fried dough. It doesn’t matter where the cuisine originates from, it just needs to be a form of fried dough. It’s my weakness and I’d love to see what Orro could do!
Also, I stopped by my local comic shop yesterday and while they didn’t have the book in stock, they were able to order it for me!!! So happy to support a favorite place and favorite authors at the same time!

My copy arrived yesterday. My mistake was in allowing my darling child (10 yo, LOVES graphic novels) to open the package. I haven’t seen it since. Sigh. I suspect that I’ll have to buy another one and open it in my closet all alone if I want to actually get to read it.
Ericka says
