We are moving so we may not be online starting Saturday. We hope that internet access will be restored early next week, but you never know. While we are gone, the lady above needs a title for her novella, in which she and her daughter will be going to Arland’s home planet to meet his mom, thwart political plots, and generally kick butt. You have from now until we come back to think of a cool title.
The winner of the title will receive a collector edition of Innkeeper Chronicles, which includes previous titles of Clean Sweep, Sweep in Peace, and One Fell Sweep.
We would like to keep the Sweep theme in the title, but if you think of something else that’s brilliant, go for it. If you read a title you like in the comments, please comment with +1, so we will know which titles are popular. We will gather ten favorites and let you vote on the title you like the best.
See you next week. We hope.
Joylyn says
My suggestion is: Second Sweep.
This is Maud’s second chance at love and a life that she adores with the man and people she has chosen.
Good luck moving. May it go quickly and may your internet be hooked up promptly!

I was so excited I forgot the title! “Blood Sweep”
I’m not sure it makes sense but there you have it.
That was going to be my suggestion as well. :p “Blood sweep” is a medical term for checking a patient for external bleeding. So there would be multiple meanings to such a title, on top of the vampire theme. I think that would work very well with the theme and also sound suitably badass.

“Swept Away” – for keeping the sweep theme, and Arland is taking Maud to his home so it fits that. I really like Swept Away. But I feel like “sweep” is much more of a Dina thing. Dina, with her broom, her inn, her words, her magic, gently (or forcefully if the need arises) sweep things away or into order. But Maud has never been described as gentle when handling issues and she always seems to prefer the direct hands on approach as plan A (the revenge at Karhari, kool-aid, joining the fight on the ground at the last draziri battle, etc) So keeping with a clean theme, but with a rougher, no nonsense, more hands on twist, my nomination is

A lot of “Sweep” going on here, all of them pretty darn good. When anyone asks about what to name something the Boaty Mc Boatface kerfuffle comes to mind.
Sweepy Mc Sweepface is obviously out, so I went with a little different direction, going with the idea that Clean Sweep means a new start as opposed to complete victory, Maud is on new path and trying to get rid of old baggage that keeps her from, well, living.

Gerda says
“Cleaning House” is great! They’re going to kick butt together in Arlands house. All the traditional minded Vampires being skeptikal of Maud and saying snarky things. Hehe. Can’t wait.
Gerda says
They’ve got no chance against her, Helen und Arland. House Krahr is loosing the dust of their old prejudice and shaken from their comfy pillows of superiority. To quote Arland: She’s magnificent.
Gerda says
Said pillows are not a loss. They were old and ratty and tacky and really needed to be cleaned out. 😉
Gerda says
Also, it’s not a Dina novel, but “related” and fits the theme.
And sweeping isn’t really Mauds style, is it? She definitely gets the house clean, but maybe with the help of some groveling Vampire Lords, who lost a bet against her, or a flamethrower? That would be very hygienic, by the way. No germs would survive her, if she is out to get them.

Here’s a few, hoping to play off ‘weep’ rather than ‘sleep’. I feel like Innkeeper vampires wouldn’t have as much cultural repression of male tears as we do. Stoicism in the face of battle, enemies, death, and in public, yes, but I wonder about Lord Soren raising young Arland to understand his emotions, if only to use them for manipulation when needed.
Sweep for the Heroes – pulled from an Abram J. Ryan poem about Confederate ‘martyrs’. The Holy Anocracy is definitely an honour-culture, and Maude is from the South, right?
Sweep Over the Heroes – J. W. Turner composition with Charles Butler lyrics, also from the Civil War era.

Sweep the Stars
Something that indicates it is the same Dina universe but as it’s Maud, she gets in amongst it all, travelling through the starry sky (without that slight detachment Dina has from her Inn). And if even a star did get in her way, she’d sweep it aside with her sword.
Oh or

Shelly P says
Side Sweep
Side Swept
A play on sideswipe. Something that can be done with a sword… and because we all know Maude is going to go in to House Krahr and blindside them, too. Plus, it is a side story of the Innkeeper series in which Maude should still be linked because she carries the genes that allow her to command an inn (so she can still sweep if/when she wants/needs to).
But I also like

Sweeping Circle?
My English isn’t good. So my interpration is like this:
Circle;
“repeatation”
Once again Maude will follows a love-interest to once again a Vampire planet…
“boundary”
…and once again be the alien/outsider among the fangy-folks.
Sweeping;
“expanding or extending”
What she shares with her vampire this time wouldn’t be a mere gloshy, wonderful romance. But love bound by sacred and abiding commitment. And the planet wouldn’t be just a place to where she lived. But home.
“removing or erasing”
Becaus she isn’t the same Maude from before. And this time, instead of taking what the vampires dished at her, it will be the other way, as it’s sound like they will be playing by her rules!

Because Maude makes her own decisions, and refuses to be sidelined or swept away. Fainting helpless princess, she ain’t. When an innkeeper makes up their mind they can be pretty much unmovable… and even though she isn’t *officially* an innkeeper she’s from a family of them and totally as strong as one.
Also it sounds like House Krahr is pretty (metaphorically) dusty and could use a good sweeping.

I’ve +1’d this suggested title three times now in three different comments, so I thought I’d say why. Dina is an Innkeeper; her symbol is a broom, so the ‘Sweep’ theme makes sense. Maud is the daughter of Innkeepers, but is not one herself. So ‘Swept Away’ keeps the connection to the ‘Sweep’ theme (daughter and sister of Innkeepers) while using ‘Away’ to distance her from Dina, Earth, and other Innkeepers. My $0.02 worth.

This email is in response to the invitation to come up with title ideas for a novella about Maud. What do you think about “Claim and Keep”?
Maud’s an Innkeeper without an Inn so no broom. No broom, no sweeping. She is a Keeper with all the magic and potential for holding an Inn, but without the inclination. She’s not trying to keep a peaceful comfortable home, she’s a warrior. A warrior who already fought her war of revenge, now she will fight for her claim on Arland. If you end up liking this, it can play with other pairings: Keep in Peace, to Claim and Keep, Keep in Time, all plays on the word Keep, Keeper. For Mauds first novella, To Claim and Keep summed it up for me, I hope it works for you or at least sparks ideas that’ll get you what you need!
Best regards,
Julianna

This is maybe not a great pick for a title but I remember Dina sarcastically referring to her sister as “Maud the Magnificent” after Maud clashes with Arland after he criticizes her for not letting Helen fight. After their fight he tells Dina “Your sister is magnificent.”
Somebody else suggested Broom and Board which may not apply to Maud but would definitely be a kickass title for the next Dina story now that she and Sean are both innkeepers together. I really liked that one! Can’t wait to see what the BDH comes up with, so many creative titles here. I was re-reading the part where Maud tells Dina she’d be with another Vampire “When Hell freezes over”. Understandable after her exile -and it got me thinking
about Maud seeking revenge on the mother-in-law’s House for exiling & erasing little Helen with the adults.
Now Maud is returning:
I originally thought
“Hell Sweeps In”, but then
“Swept Into Hell” seemed a more apt description of an exiles welcome home. It also is a great spring board for
“Swept Into Hell”
“Swept Into Battle”
“Swept Into Rebellion”
“Swept Into Nexus”
The “Swept Into —–” franchise is full of possibilities for Maud’s adventures with Helen and Arland. Kinda like the
“Magic —–” books were for Kate.
I don’t know how you’re going to narrow it down, there are so many good suggestions. +Fingers crossed for another long running series!
