I was going to wait until we had the proofread done, but everyone could use a bit of a distraction, so the page for BLOOD HEIR has been updated with the edited first chapter. Happy reading.
Update: OMG, it’s not “totally different,” it’s still the same scene just with a bit more editing. Love you, guys, but you are silly. 🙂

I’m not reading it until I own it, but I feel cheered anyway. News is bleak today. UK heads into lockdown take 2 from midnight, I just had to explain to my mum why the majority vote for Biden doesn’t mean he’s won and there’s a funeral we can’t attend because of covid. Freebies restore faith in humanity.
Teresa says
The UK is in my prayers. Stay safe.
Donna Asutaitis says
Thank you. To be honest, I’m not worried about lockdown per se. I’m actually relieved in a way because here in central London it’s been slack – the news was saying how great we’re doing here etc, but travelling the underground was terrifying, many shops and buses weren’t enforcing the rules and I’ve still not seen a covid marshal anywhere. My anger with my fellows and personal anxiety were mounting hourly. Hopefully we can slow the virus again.
Alison says
Thank you!
Ruth says
Thank you so much. My husband and I were poll workers (US) yesterday and it was a long day (we’ve been working in an absentee ballot function since 18 September, so more like a long six weeks). Woke this morning tired and depressed, trying to find good to appreciate (sun is shining, weather is beautiful, democracy appears to still be functioning….). This was a wonderful gift.
And, FYI, we surrendered our phones when entering the precinct but I was able to keep my e-reader so I started Hidden Legacy for the fifth time.
Your writing remains an incredible gift and I’m truly, truly appreciative. Thank you.
Shannon from Texas says

Amazing! Thank you so much. I needed this. Some times I chuckle to myself at Hugh saying “put down that cow”. Even if it does not make it into the book I think it deserves to be on a mug.

Will there be a dead tree version of the book or is it an ebook only? You might have answered this already but I can’t find it.
Sonu says
Saiman is dead?
And Kate is not in Atlanta?
And if Kate’s not in Atlanta then what is Conman doing there?
Oh Lord… I have so many questions. Can’t wait for the book to be released.
Btw, This was awesome as always!!!
Sonu says
Conlan*
This is exciting!!!
Shannon from Texas says
Did you want those questions answered? Kate/Conlan/Wilmington were in the previously posted chapters we’re supposed to be forgetting, when Nick is showing Aurelia the map of Atlanta. Saiman is in the post-battle wrap up at the end of _Magic Triumphs_. I’m happy to answer if you’d like.
iread78 says
I’ve rewritten this comment 15 times trying to express how I felt reading the edited chapter and I’m still struggling. It was so amazing I have no words 🙂 I can’t wait for the finished book – it comes out my birthday week and I’m planning on devouring it as an early birthday present!
Alicia Y says
Loved the first chapter!! Coming out Jan 2021! That’s only a few months away! you guys get things done fast!
I enjoyed the new details!! I had a theory of what/who was watching from the ruins near the bridge based on the other chapters you posted before you took them down to make it a real book. But you took out the part where Conlan stays and they hug so I don’t know anymore! Thank you for the first chapter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ann M says
Thank you! It is excellent.
Kara Rogers says
God bless you!! I can’t decide whether to cry on you, or hug your neck; maybe both. Thank you for continuing with this book!!!
Paula says
I noticed that too! I was sure the watcher was Derek and that the hug would confirm her identity for him. But now it’s all up in the air… as it probably should be.
Paula says
Oops! Replied to the wrong comment.
Alicia Y says
Yes! that was what I was thinking, but now…??!
Also that “Nobody followed us.” line. Is that a taunt? No one followed so they didn’t see Sienna call her Julie, or she just THINKS no one followed … but he did!
I’m driving myself crazy. So can’t wait for the book!
KaReN says
On the original version, I thought it was Derek. But I think it was one of Moloch’s priest. However, with the revision, I don’t know. I like the revision with Julie and Conlan not hugging. There is always eyes watching in secrets. That was my first thought when I read the original version. This is better.
Alex says
Very much appreciated!
Mary Carter says
This is already on my Top 5 favorite series list. Wonderful! Thank you for sharing. I didn’t think of the election while reading it – a real tribute to its quality! Great background for what happened to Atlanta for someone, who by chance, hasn’t read Kate. ….. Oh, Saiman …..
Lenore says
Oh my god. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I needed this more than I even knew.
Suet Ying Chan says
So revved to read it….
Ashley says
I thought it was great before, but the changes you guys made made it more cohesive with Kate’s timeline and experiences with the then Julie. I also think the addition of Sienna and the grave just made it flow while including information that seems like it’s the basis of the story.
Isaura Vargas says
I’m beyond thankful, I really love the way you write… Are any of your books open for tv adaptation? Your stories simply deserve more love and recognition

Thank you. When I read the description of the different animal eyes in the trees I thought of the watermelon bandits and it made me laugh.
Kim says
We are silly. Please don’t take us too seriously. I haven’t even read it yet, and I am so desperate for diversion and distraction that over analyzing it is tempting, and I go out of my way not to do that. Ifirmly believe that minor inconsistencies in world building are an author’s choice as the series evolves.
Shutting up now. Going to read now.
Susan Reynolds says
I like it. At least this way readers won’t need a scorecard to figure out who is who. I like having Siena come to talk to Julie. Conlan makes more sense. Pack law changes are spelled out–good! Thank you for such a nice surprise on a stressful day of waiting for results.
Kathleen says
Thank you both, you are the best! It helps in these difficult times.

Commenting just a hop, skip and a jump away from The Lennart’s home off of N. Druid Hills Rd to say, THANK YOU!
For what it’s worth, I never expected the previous excerpts to survive verbatim, but they were just what I (and I suspect many others) needed at a time of uncertainty. And here y’all are again, delivering the goods when needed.
I apologize if my repeated requests for an update on Maude and Arland’s wedding offended either of you, such was not my intent. I want to let y’all know that Kate’s world will always be my mostest favoritest time/place House Andrews has ever created — and yes, I have preordered Julie’s book.

Love It! Thank you for this bit of happiness in what has been a strange sort of week.
My only question is why you put him in Arizona? About a quarter of the state is AmeriIndian land and we never held with child sacrifice for at least the past thousand years. In fact we never held with Human sacrifice in general except for the Chatiks si chatiks (commonly known as the Pawnee) and that was an uncommon thing. The Natchez might have but they were over in the eastern side of the country and that is a bit controversial. Is ritual suicide to follow leader into the next world really human sacrifice?
Torture you to death? Oh yes. Eat you? Sometimes. Usually in times of famine. But human sacrifice was more a central/southern Mexico and points south sort of thing.
We were far more likely to adopt the children then anything else. So I can not see the Native Powers of Arizona allowing that kind of power to set up in their territory. Sure the tribes are not united but this kind of thing is a bad enough to bring them together to throw this kind of curse out of their land.
Ilona says
Because it’s hot, it’s mostly empty, and there are mineral deposits. He is the god of fire and metallurgy, and he wants to be left alone. Here are your state demographics: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Arizona#/media/File:Arizona_population_map.png
Lynn says
Ok, I can see that. Thanks for answering.
Carol says
I agree with Ilona. I lived here most of my life and there are still great expanses someone could hide themselves in and not be noticed until it was too late. There are several areas of mineral deposits that bring all kinds of people in to “practice” there stuff currently. It works.
Lynn says
Someone could hide themselves yes, but unless he is keeping his operation really small and take his victims from a long ways away from the areas controlled by the local tribes we would notice. Not many member of any of the tribes just vanish. A child going missing would be noted. A bunch of children going missing and there would not be a stone that had not been flipped over in the entire south west. We are still tribe and family oriented.
Even Roland walked softly around Native Powers and the south west has the largest concentration of Native Powers outside of Alaska. Oklahoma has a large number of tribes but they are mostly from east of the Mississippi. The southwest tribes are locals.
And while there is lots of land there is not a lot of land that has enough water to support a large group.
Although if he set up in the Lake Mead area he might be far enough away that the tribes would not notice as long as he was not raiding them for humans. If he drew people from the west and northern areas and did not hunt the east especially it could work and that would undoubtedly draw Erra’s attention as he would be taking people from close to her territory. That would work.
Yes, I know. No one else frets over these kinds of things.
Kelly says
Thank you
The only advice I remember from my grandfather was not to wish away your time and live each day – so I do, but …. really looking forward to the book’s release !
Sleepy says
Was a bit surprised that Curran “treated Curran like a younger sister” I thought it was a more uncle/father relationship
Anyway I have to agree with the BDH… seemed pretty different to me, dramatic or not. xD
But who cares, I’m very excited thank you!!
Sleepy says
Also, been having a crappy week, so I really appreciate this, thank you 🙂

Thank you so much. Really needed the distraction, it is the only thing that worked today…

That scream you all heard from up north was just me here in Canada. Move along, nothing to see here.
Vicki LENOIR says
Thank you for the sneaky peaky. Just one thing confuses me; she notes the old beast lord treated her as a little sister. So, I thought Kate was mother figure and Curran father figure… if that is still correct, I never got the sibling sensation between Jim and Julie…. what am I missing?
Ilona says
Why in the world would Julie and Jim be in a sibling relationship? Curran is the old beastlord. He treats Derek as his younger brother and form he point of view he treats her as his younger sister.
Vicki LENOIR says
Thank you for the clarification. As I had mentioned, I had placed Curran in a father position due to Julie placing Kate as “Mom” and Conlan as “brother”. That premise is incorrect.
MJ says
Thank you 🙂
Shannon from Texas says
I have a possibly ridiculously stupid question, but that’s where my brain is today. Feel free to laugh.
“Tattered” cloaks. And robes. Not just in IA stories, but all over. It’s the most common descriptor used. Is it just description, or is there some sub-textual meaning there I’m missing?
The things my brain gets stuck on… ::throws up hands in defeat::
Simone says
When you are traveling alone on foot / horseback you don’t want to show off wealth. It invites trouble like a big neon sign that says “I have money rob me”. Plus she is trying to stay under the radar and avoid attention ????

Thank you! I’m so excited. 🙂 Love the “update” to the blog, too. :-b

Something to look forward to in the new year. Thanks for sharing. It looks SO good.
Gericke says
The excerpt was AMAZING. It connected pieces I didn’t quite get in the last draft and was crafted beautifully. I was absolutely sucked in. THANK YOU for the joy you bring us.
GailinPgh says
I appreciate when we get to see the evolution of a story. The posted serial was great, but what you have done to it feels deeper and more exciting. The friendship between Julie and Sienna, Conlan’s personality, the urgency of her mission, and the other details made this even more of a pleasure to read.
Cindy says
Thank you!
Cally says
Very interesting to compare drafts. The changes have done such a good job of introducing stakes, players, and motivations all while situating the reader in a location.
Me likey.
Lisa says
Many ???? thanks !
Pam M. says
So Kate is in Wilmington? What is in Wilmington except for University of NC at Wilmington? Unless there isn’t a university there anymore. This was really good though. I always loved Julie but the new Julie/Aurelia was a big hard to take. This makes her more human and Conlan is just cool. He is his father’s son. *L*
Carol says
Totally love all of it! Great cover, great jacket write up, great chapter! Woohoo! Thanks!
Haley says
Really appreciate it after this week 🙂 I love the changes that have been made plot-wise. I totally see why you did it. And the dialogue is *chef’s kiss* as usual.

Rachel Caine passed away Nov. 1. The world is better because she was here.
Virginia says
Ohhh…I was wondering. She will be sorely missed, but left quite a legacy. Blessings and peace to her and her loved ones.
Marie S says
Oh my goodness. So quick.
My thoughts go to her husband, family and many friends. Really feeling her loss in this world. She took no prisoners and had oceans of compassion. Let her light shine on.
Rachel was the first author I read in this genre; I never forgot Myrnin from Morganville Vampires. My heart aches.
Thank you, Sarafina for this notice.
SueB,NH says
As with other pieces of your writing when we’ve since the first, rough, version & then the polished version, you again have amazed me by how much better the finished form of your writing is. I can see why some people think it’s “totally” different, because you’ve added some new bits and rearranged some of the older bits, but that’s what the writing process is all about. I’m greatly looking forward to reading the whole story once it’s available. Thank you.
Denise says
Love it. And Saiman is back somehow. And Sienna has changed, too. Thanks for this chapter.
Patricia Schlorke says
Thank you very much. I really needed this.
My car’s battery decided to die in my garage this afternoon. After an hour of trying to get my portable jumper cables to reach the negative terminal, I called road side assistance. The very nice gentleman showed me where the alternative negative terminal is after jumping the battery with his portable jumper cables. Live and learn.
Went to the dealership to get a new battery. While I was waiting, I saw my dream car. Just about drooled in my mask. ????
So… between seeing my dream car and this lovely surprise, life is good.
Virginia says
A much-needed boon, Author Lords, thank you.????♀️ Nicely rewritten; sets up the story even better than the earlier version.

Thank you sooooo much!!
Elaine Preston says
Thank you so much for the wonderful gift. Writers like you who care for their readers are remarkable. You stand out among your peers. Stay safe!
Big Mike says
I’m gonna hold out for more excerpts before I preorder the book. Okay, I confess, I was gonna do it anyway. But now there’s no choice.
Amy says
Thank you. This is a bright spot in a time of uncertainty.
William says
Ilona,
I will thank you for the posting, but more importantly I must also say that, based on my memory of the original chapter 1 posting, this one is worlds better. You have raised it from an interesting look at the world of Kate Daniels from the side, to a possible entry as a series that betters Kate Daniels world.
As always, world class!

Thank you so much for the lovely excerpt. I gonna love it (even if the “put down that cow” conversation does not happen). Sometimes sacrifices must be made…
Stay safe and well, please.

Thank you!
A tasty snack! ???? ????

Love, love, love it!! Thank you so much! I was already so excited for Rider to come out, and now I’m even more so! I already thought it was fantastic, but this start was even better.
I’m trying to find things to be grateful for right now, so here’s one: I’m grateful for talented authors that regularly brighten my day. So thanks!!
Rhoda says

I love it. I also think it’s a little different (sorry?), but not in a bad way. It rocks!!!!! Thank you!!!!!

This is so needed. Picking it up is light turning on a soft light, cuddling a cup of tea, snuggling in a soft blanket, and huddling from a winter storm raging outside. Can’t say thank you enjoy for sharing your skills with us. Can’t wait to open this book at 12 am when in releases.
All I can offer is to send happy thoughts your way and hope you are as blessed as you make each of us feel when we read your writing.
Kal says
Thank you for tossing us a bone.
Since Ryder/Julie is getting a whole new makeover, I’m tossing Jorjeana Marie’s name into the hat for the audiobook narration.
Susan J says
This is just what I needed. THANK YOU!
Umesh says
I sank into that chapter like sinking into a hot spring. I was just there, in Atlanta. Cannot wait for the release. Thank you for this, you have no idea how good it feels to disappear into your stories. Hope you are all well and getting sufficient rest.
Kat says
Thank you for the excerpts!
Thank you for the edits as well, they are fantastic. I don’t know how you always manage to improve on your already amazing work but I definitely see why you wanted us to forget the previous version.
I can’t wait to read the novel. It’s looking more and more like hours of pure happiness in book format.

Wilmington Georgia or Wilmington NC?

You are my favorite author(s) EVER. I’m 43 and have been escaping into books since I was 10. I have read almost everything you’ve written 3 times or more. I’m a fan.
This excerpt is perfect. Thank you for everything you give us.

Bless you <3

The perfect antidote to cure my compulsive scrolling of election results. Loved every sentence and will focus now on how excited I am about the book release In the New Year. Huge thanks to you for your generosity and brilliance!

Ahhh, beautiful. Many thanks.

Thank you so much! This was a much needed distraction.

I agree with all the superlatives in the comments.
The familial relationships were discussed vividly a couple of months ago. The consensus appeared to be that they were similar to that of many southern U.S. families.
I enjoy reading what ever you write. Yes, I look for hidden meanings or clues. Most of my guesses are wrong. I do not look for typos. If I see one, it does not bother me and only God is perfect.
Becky says
L-O-O-O-VED IT!!! The editing was so cool- all the background info, Conlin speaking up more, seeing Siena, everything!! Plus I like the Conlin/ Julie hug being removed… I always felt Derek must have seen that, assuming he’s the presence she feels.
Anywho- amazing! Super stoked for the book. Thanks IA!!
Gaëlle from France says
Absolutely wonderful chapter. Could not be better. Wow.
And Conlan !!! This kid is something else, I adore him.
Christina says
Thank you!
jg says
It feels more refined. It’s been GRATEFULLY read over here as a distraction from refreshing the election results and I’m crossing my fingers it doesn’t get edited to death like Catalina’s 2nd installment!
Good job! You both have magical writing abilities!
Bridget says
Is this going to be a series…the excerpt says that it is Book 1 of the Ryder series part of the Kate Daniels world.
I am so excited for this book, but I didn’t realize it might be a series…I guess I assumed it was a stand alone book tied into the Kate World…like Andrea’s book.
If it’s a series I really hope Juile doesn’t need to avoid Kate for all of it, that would be so heartbreaking.
Randy says
Looks great. I’m ready for the ebook and audio.
Umm, is it done proofing? I saw something about Kate going to Wilmington that might need fixin.
trailing wife says
The edits definitely make it tighter. I look forward to seeing the rest of it. 🙂
Amanda says
I did not have the this chapter memorized from the first time around, but I like this! If anything I think I like it better quite frankly.
So excited for this book!
mort says
I really liked it! Looking forward to ryder and appreciating the effort you put into it. It looks as if I will enjoy the outcome even more than the chapters we got earlier this year.

So great! Can’t wait to read the full book. Thank you for a wonderful treat.
TH says
Thank you! Love the edits.
Lara says
Loved the small changes and can’t wait to see the effect on the finished book. Thanks for posting that, I really needed something to read and was missing being able to read from Julie’s perspective.
April says
My birthday is the week Ryder is scheduled to be published. I’ve told my husband all I want is a kid-free day to drink coffee and devour this book. I cannot wait!
Carly says
Super excited! Making my way through Kate Daniels for the first time and I should be done with it by the time this is released!
Janice says
Just read the “new” first chapters and while I had loved the original draft – this version knocks it out of the park. Ilona and Gordon – you are the best!
Lisa B says
I soooooo needed this! Thank you. Preordered the book ages ago. In the meantime, my card number got hacked. Once again I will have to deal with changing my card info after the book is released. Tried changing it now, but the site wouldn’t accept the change. Sigh….
Sage says
Nice!
Simone says
This is so amazing! You guys completely reworked and expanded this chapter, love it !. Can’t wait to buy the book????
SJ says
So so good! House Andrews, you are solid. And we love you.
Bart says
Thank you! Looking back on this week, reading this new chapter was the turning point. I took a deep breath, enjoyed sinking into Julie’s world and at the end decided to relax a bit and not stress as much over all that is going on in the world right now.
Kelly says
***SCREAM*** Thank you!!!
Rika says
Hmm, so much revealed in first chapter. I still like it but now it feels more like a Book 2.
Stephanie says
Love it! Thank you for sharing this with us!
Jing says
Love this edited version. Much tighter and more impact.
Cant wait for January.
Momcat says
Aha! This is why you are great authors and I would never be. I was perfectly happy with the original. But you said,” Arggggh!” and rewrote it with much sweat and suffering I’m sure. Rewrites have to be Hell. And now, Wow! That’s great. Can’t wait for the book.
Patrice Gregory says
I haven’t posted before so I am unsure of the rules but if questions can be asked on books other than the upcoming publication, I have one. I am rereading the first three Hidden Legacy books for the umpteenth time as a stress reliever and was curious about Michael Latimer referenced in the gala scenes. The encounter and interactions seemed important enough that originally I had expected to see him again in the story but obviously not. I don’t mind being informed that I haven’t missed a point so Ilona Andrews readers, please let me know what you think because the guy is interesting. That said, I have reread all the author’s books so many times I should be able to quote dialogue and I find new enjoyment with each reread. Thank you both so much.
Marie S says
Thank you, IA for posting.
I understand now why you needed to do what you did. Excellent!
Don’t want to wish my time away but it’s a challenge to wait patiently until Jan 12.
JR says
Is it just me, or does Conlan like his dad (and Kate) in the part when he says “…..go find some and see”?
JR says
* sound just like his dad (and Kate)…

Yes, it us “totally different”.
It’s better. 🙂

I love it again. I just pre-ordered.

Chills, I have chills! So good – can’t wait for it to come out! Thanks Gordon and Ilona!
Meg says
I’m from Atlanta and right now I’m thinking I’d rather live in your Atlanta than the way it is right now. Thank you for this.
Sherri says
You two are amazing: your stories are rich and lush. Thank you.
Sivi says
That was soo good. Thank you. Can’t wait for the book. I hadn’t seen the twitter post re the chapter, I seem to only get some notifications randomly for your account and then I go back and check. So like the other person in the last 8 days post, I’m just reading this now. Such a great surprise for the weekend. Thank you thank you thank you….hope the Internet and Ac is all working now
Anaid says
hi I just read the excerpt and I loved it. But something did got me confused…
while Julie referenced Curran she points out that he treated her like a little sister. Did I misunderstood something? I have read the books many many times and Curran does make it clear to all Atlanta that Julie is his ward. I always thought that he was more like a fatherish figure just as Kate is her mother figure.
Harshita says
You guys know we love you, right?
Regina says
I didn’t know that I could be happier about Julie’s story being written until I read the New Excerpt for Blood Heir! I’m so happy!! Thank you for making it even more epic!
FBR says
The people who are saying it’s different are right, but to me in a way that makes it more cohesive. I liked the first version just fine, but this seems much more polished. I’ve already pre-ordered Blood Heir and am looking forward to it when it releases. +1
Mary says
Absolutely phenomenal! I had enjoyed the earlier version, but this one is richer with connections to the past and future, as well as more tightly written than before.
Yum! I know it is not food for the belly, but it is definitely food for the soul!
JULIO ORTEGA says
As I was reading i couldnt help myself remembering the first chapter a while back, THIS IS NOTHING LIKE IT!!! Im so exited for this book. This chapter blew my mind!!!! Amazing work you guys are doing, keep it up.
kristina Collins says
Thank you so much for posting! I can’t wait to dive back into this world again.
Diana ^.^ says
Oooo this is much more like Julie!
It was still cool seeing the change in the writing process, like watching the behind the scenes feature.
I can wait for the full book to come out! ????
Thank you! ❤❤❤
Paula Lieberman says
Finished product first chapter versus [memory of] draft–burrs removes and filed down and polished, gaps filled, scaffolding material eliminated and casting down with finer grade ioptimized material than draft material, etc. etc.
Crystal says
I can’t wait for this book. It releases right in time for my birthday! I think locking myself in my bedroom and reading it in one sitting sounds like the perfect present to myself.
Irrish says
I’m soooo excited! I love how you fleshed out this chapter! With cyberpunk in December and this a month after that, I’m happy as a clam!
