News and Reveals

Blog, Publishing News, Writing POST A COMMENT July 2, 2025 by Ilona

The first draft of the Inheritance is officially finished.

It’s the same size as Magic Claims. Some novella it turned out to be. Oy. This was so not the plan when we started.

Preorders and Availability

The Inheritance has gone to the developmental edit, and then it will go to the copyedit. We aiming for tail end of July for the release date but please don’t hold us to it. The cover is done. It was painted by Candice Slater with typography by Natanya Wheeler, and it is beautiful. We will reveal it when we’ll have the preorder up. We anticipate the preorder period to be very short, only a couple of weeks, unless something drastically changes. We may skip it altogether, depending on where we are in the online serial.

The audiobook: we are signing contracts as we speak. The audio will be recorded this month; however, it will take a few weeks for it to be uploaded. We will keep you posted. There may also be slight delay in print, just because that process takes longer.

Candice’s beautiful artwork will be included in the ebook and print versions. It will be black and white in print and will show up as black and white if you are using an actual Kindle. If you are reading on your phone or other tablets that display color, the artwork will show up in full color.

Here is a sample of what it will look like. The text doesn’t match because we just took a random chapter and stuffed a bunch of images into it to test things.

A screenshot of Candice Slater's illustration of a street with a monster climbing up on the building and random chapter text below to illustrate how the images will be presented in the ebook.

Remaining Installments

People are asking how many installments are left. 7. Unless we glue some scenes together.

As always, the story will stop before the big finale, because as much as we love you, we do need to make money, so if you want the final resolution, please support us by purchasing a copy. We hope to have no delay between the last installment and the availability of the entire book.

There will be the scheduled installment on Friday, 4th of July.

Direct Sales

We know that some of you are upset by the recent change to Amazon’s policy that prevents you from saving your books to your own storage devices. We are considering offering digital copies of The Inheritance for sale through Shopify/Bookfunnel in addition to selling it through Amazon, Apple, and other retail channels.

Again, in addition to Amazon, Apple, BN and other options. You will be able to purchase it at your favorite retailer or at our site directly.

If we decide to offer direct downloads, this would mean that you can buy the book from us and add it to your favorite reading app or Kindle library. A lot of indie authors successfully use this distribution model. I actually just bought Tears of the Wolf from Elisabeth Wheatley’s site.

Update: NVM about the cover note that was here. It actually does show up properly after the file is opened.

We know that some of you will want to know which option will give us more money. We’re not going to tell you. Please buy in the format most convenient to you. We want the purchasing process to be as smooth as possible for you.

We will get our money either way. We only ask that you don’t pirate.

Finally

Finally, a very important announcement.

The cover of THIS KINGDOM WILL NOT KILL ME will be revealed early next week. It is truly a beautiful cover. So please check the blog on Tuesday around 11:00 am EST for the link.

And that concludes this week’s admin post. Pheew.

    So excited for everything!
I use bookfunnel for some of my fav Indie authors. I use a Samsung Tablet as my ebook reader, reading it through the app and my use phone for audio, instead of sending it to Kindle or B&N apps.
The app works well, the only downside is that I cant make notes but I can highlight passages. If you guys offer it there it will be my first choice rather than Amazon or B&N.
Hope this helps someone on the frnce.

Thank you for letting us know. It does help. A lot of people prefer to buy from different indie channels and direct sales would allow us to offer them that option.

Some of the indie author I buy from use bookfunnel. With bookfunnel you can you read it in the bookfunnel apps OR you have the option to transfer to you Kobo, Kindle, apple or Nook… so you can still read it on your eReader

      • Virginia says

        July 4, 2025 at 2:00 pm

I also prefer using BookFunnel, both to read on my phone and to send books to either my Kindle Paperwhite or to the Kobo app (which I can read on my phone or my tablet). Buying directly from authors is great.

It’s a little more work, but I then OWN not license (grrr!) the books I’ve paid market price for!

I’m trying hard not to buy more stuff from Amazon, but with over 2,000 books in Kindle, I can’t quit them entirely.

I don’t typically post, but I wanted to add my support for Bookfunnel. I purchased a book distributed this way for the first time recently and was very impressed. I’m currently trying to avoid Amazon, but because I’m in New Zealand other retailers can be a bit hit and miss with ebooks (mutter regional publishing rights mutter). Thus, I would really appreciate a direct purchase option.

Hi, I’ve never heard of Bookfunnel until this comment. If this is an avenue, I will use it first before going to Amazon. I use Kobo more to balance Amazon out, but happy to add Bookfunnel to balance out Kobo.

I’m surprised that a document sent to the kindle doesn’t have a cover feature. I have many documents (mostly Netgalley and Edelweiss arcs) in my library with full color covers.

Is it the document type or a change in amazon policy?

    • Ilona says

      July 3, 2025 at 8:14 am

I did some research on this and it comes down to Amazon wanting to keep its ecosystem protected. The capability to display the cover exists, but it’s disabled. And that is understandable – it’s their proprietary marketplace. They want you to buy directly from them so they can get a cut. We don’t have an issue with that stance. because we are adding a foreign file to an existing software and device.

In anticipation of The Inheritance I reread Sanctuary. I used to have a very bad habit of skimming descriptive parts of books and going straight to the action. The authors have completely cured me of this because the characters are so real and I love the humor.

Mod R, I have a follow up question. I’m new to the audiobook world and don’t know anything about the process of getting an audiobook out. I am absolutely loving the graphic audio adaptations of HA books and am working my way through them.

When HA announces a new audiobook version of a book like the announcement for the Inheritance, is it understood that this audiobook is read by 1 person, or are the new audiobooks defaulting to the graphic audio format?

      • Moderator R says

        July 3, 2025 at 3:52 pm

The audio format for each book release is ALWAYS the traditional non-dramatized audio. It is produced either by House Andrews or by their publishers. The traditional audio release has 1 narrator or 2 in case of dual POVs (Magic Claims for example was like that. I can’t yet spill on Inheritance, don’t make me! :P).

Graphic Audio are their own company. They decide which books they want, buy the adaptation rights from the authors, and then do their own dramatized productions with special effects and music and their own business and creative decisions and profit. The author doesn’t commission them or impose which books they do πŸ™‚

Graphic Audio will never replace the traditional audiobooks, they’re different endeavours πŸ™‚

          July 3, 2025 at 4:12 pm

For those who haven’t done it, it’s easy to send a book to your Kindle.

You just download the book file (in Kindle epub format) and attach it to an email, which you send to your Kindle’s email address. You can find that email address in Settings on your Kindle.

BookFunnel makes it even easier, by emailing it to you; just forward that to your Kindle. I usually save the book in my Bookfunnel library and download it on my phone or PC — belt and suspenders!

House Andrews have written previously about the various stages in a manuscript’s life and different types of editors πŸ™‚

A developmental editor focuses on the “big stuff”. Content, narrative flow, overall structure. A copy editor edits at sentence-level, consistency in style, formatting, and also proofreading (sometimes there’s a separate proofreader stage).

Any libraries or indie bookstores, and even readers themselves if they want to preorder it through their local bookstore, can do so with the Ingram Sparks number of the Print On Demand physical copy.

We will share it once the preorder is live πŸ™‚

Thank you for the news! I love that the Inheritance will be available so soon!

I read on an iPad as I love having more options. The simple possibility to create folders is awesome as I re-read books. Plus I like reading on it. I’ve decided against using Amazon some years ago and did not look back since. I would love to buy it directly from you. If that will be an option it will definitely be my first choice. If not, I will use KOBO (as usual). For you I would even break my no Amazon rule but I sincerely hope it does not come to that. I did not even break it for Azarinth Healer and only read the first three books as the rest are only available on Amazon. I do dislike them with a passion…

Atlantic DK, at the recommendation of most of the BDH and the owner of Terrapin herself πŸ™‚

And speaking of the BDH, I sure hope no one else was planning on buying that Coastlines collection, because it was mysteriously exhausted on the same day that blog article got almost 400 comments πŸ˜€ A case for the Scooby Doo gang, for sure.

Welcome to the BDH. I started following this blog bc I didn’t know anyone else who read these books. It is wonderful to become involved with others who love them and, best of all, to talk with others about the books and the characters. This blog is one of the best bc although we are all nice people, sometimes things go a little off and then we have Magister ModR to whip us back into shape.

Also, the AuthorLords sometimes shake their sticks at us and none of us want any ripper cushions! (Imagine that; the Writers of Wonderful Words actually speak directly to us mere readers!)

      • Heidi says

      Welcome Doni!

Mod R is the wrangler of the Book Devouring Horde (BDH). That’s all of us readers commenting on the blog. Mod R can also be the person who will dangle a carrot over our heads but not let us in on the secret until the secret is out on the blog. (I can hear you, Mod R saying, who me?)

As mz says, Ilona and Gordon sometimes have to put their feet down on us. None of us wants that to happen, so we try to be good, chalant, and fluffy. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.

June was fixing the yard after half of it got demolished by the sewer guys; I’m tired of moving dirt and landscaping the result. July is replacing/staining my porch steps and scraping/priming/painting the exterior bottom half of the porch; unfortunately the top half will be all ladder work in August. Thankfully I can do most of the inside without a ladder. Now I need an incentive for the end of August!

Hey, if there is a gap between the Blog serial and publication, an Innterview hosted by Dina is such a shippable dream! Maybe Roman could host a game of “Who’s Shipping Who?” and offer to plan the wedding for the winners. Heh. Yes, I am re-reading that one.

    Anyway, thank you, for everything.

    • Moderator R says

      July 4, 2025 at 5:31 am

No, it will be the traditional audio book, with 1 or 2 narrators, not full cast, undramatized, no sound effects, no music.

Whenever there is a new book release with an audio format, it will be the traditional audio πŸ™‚. These are the books the authors or their publishers produce.

Graphic Audio are an independent company who aren’t commissioned by the authors. GA decides which books to adapt and they are the ones who pay the authors for the adaptation rights to a text. All business and creative decisions belong to GA (although House Andrews are on very good terms and available for advice and consultation regarding lore, characters, pronunciations etc)

Graphic Audio might be interested in the future to adapt The Inheritance, but we don’t know that yet πŸ™‚

Wait a minute! You mean you guys are actually Professional Authors??? And the creation of this world was partly the result of a desire for Filthy Lucre??? (And any future sequels would partly depend on just how much Filthy Lucre you obtained for this first instalment?)

Well, fine… I will take ebook, hardcopy and audio book versions … as soon as Certain People get the sale links posted…

I buy a lot of ebooks on Kindle because I have a Kindle Fire and it is quick and convenient, but I am not pleased about a certain Big Muddy River’s decision to change my terms of purchase from actual ownership to long-term rental only while the River exists — and to apply that retroactively to every book I have ever bought from it in the past…

I now buy direct from authors whenever I can, store multiple copies of the files on my own multiple backups, and upload one to my Kindle Fire to read there. I bought most of Elizabeth Wheatley’s books that way after you guys introduced me to the Book Goblin. If you do decide to sell directly too, I will buy direct from you instead of using Bezos as a middleman book landlord…

I find purchasing directly from an author, from their site is best. Gives the Author more money, and makes me feel a little better if I end up having to go to Amazon and get a book because I HATE it when my series don’t match up and my Kindle books don’t supply Goodreads with updates.

I personally love my Kobos (currently have a Libra and Nia). I download all my ebooks to my pc, due to my large library and to ensure they’re backed up, then transfer them to my ereader. I can then delete or keep them on my Kobos to re-read. I’m sure you know which category IA’s books fall into! I buy most of my ebooks from Kobo (they have a price match guarantee), Google Play, Smashwords, and a few authors directly/via Bookfunnel.

Since I’m not a writer but simply a reader and interested only into the story and not the book rules and industry why is everyone smiling or rolling their eyes when you talk about novella or short story. Are there significant differences?

And may I ask how to send a book from another source onto my kindle? As far as I know Amazon allows only books from Amazon on it’s kindle, doesn’t it?

Thanks for all your hard work and fun with the independence day. The first movie was great.

If you have the epub file for the non-kindle/Amazon book you can use this page here to send it to your kindle: https://www.amazon.com/sendtokindle

The difference is that a novel is longer than a novella and thus gives us, the Horde made famous by our book devouring proclivities, a bigger feast πŸ™‚.

The in-joke and reason we are giggling is that Ilona will always start to write a story and put her foot down that it will not, under any circumstances, go past 35k words.

That’s when we wink at each other conspiratorially in the comments, and little by little we manage to get so invested with the story and the characters and ask so many questions that it ends up…exactly double that.

And then, of course, is when the mission to turn that 35k words into a series begins πŸ˜…. It’s hard to be a fluffy Horde, but someone has to do it!

You can send books to Kindle through various methods, apps, email, manually – there are many articles about it on the internet describing it https://www.theverge.com/23842102/kindle-amazon-import-files-epub for example πŸ™‚

I’ve used Bookfunnel to buy books from other authors and I like it. Reasonably easy format to work with. And I don’t have to worry about which app I want to read it on.

I’m excited. I’ve actually not read any of this because I’ve been saving it to read all at once in one big bite.

I hope that you do offer it for direct purchase. I hate the model where you buy a book but you’ve really just purchased a license and it can be taken away at any time. I would pay an extra dollar or so to know that it was mine, on my hard drive, forever.

Just want to say, given how often I re-read your books, I’m very confident my price-per-read is into the fractional cent range. We want you to make money too, because your books bring us great joy and comfort and you should be rewarded and celebrated for that contribution to our lives!

Thank you. Thank you. I am afraid I also am just plain stuck. I have a Kindle….but I read paper books. I turn the page physically. I love the way the book starts to have places where it automatically opens to wonderful passages, because I have re-read it so many times. Which brings up the “re-read”. I do not understand people who don’t re-read. Any good story is defined as a good story by the fact that you need to read it again. And again. And again…..
Already have re-read Inheritance several times. My teeth are grinding and stomach dancing in anticipation of the next few developments . Can’t wait to buy. May have to buy twice so I can wear one copy out. Wheee!

Don’t know if this comment will attract your attention at this late date. But if it’s not Inheritance installment day, I only know there’s been s blog post from my e mail notification. (which comes one day after the site drop) But I’d like to share my input on a format for the direct buy. Epub is a pretty popular format. My nook accepts “side loads” of epub files and loads it directly to my library. Also although Kindle doesn’t directly support epub, it does have a translator built-in that will change an epub file to a Kindle format. So a twofer if it helps direct your attention to a particular format

Just want to say that no one begrudges you your rightfully earned monetary rewards! If you don’t make money doing this writing thing the writing thing goes away and no more books will be coming to the table. I remember when you were talking about leaving your day jobs to write full time and being so surprised that you were still doing other jobs because your books are so fabulous! Why wouldn’t you be making a living with them?! I guess I was naive. All this just to say, I’m always surprised that anyone, including you House Andrews, ever questions or jokes that you might want to be paid for doing your job. Nobody works for free, we all need to eat. You guys don’t owe us anything and yet you are so generous with your time and content, the BDH feels like the found family that all your books give us. So, thanks.

Wild horses would not keep me from getting this one. *laughing* I’m far too invested in the story and have loved every single installment. I love it all. I read the InnKeeper series for a warm and fuzzy, relaxing time. I read Kate Daniels when I want familiarity with spice (and laughs when Kate and Curran are courting). I read the Kinsman series to cleanse my palate. There’s only one other writing team that vies for all my money, and that’s Preston and Child (I’m such an anthropology/archaeology Indiana Jones nerd). Every pay day goes like this: “Must pay the bills. But there’s a new Ilona Andrews out. And I’m not caught up with the Pendergast series. You MUST pay the bills first. But I need new books. *Growling from my grown-up self and the Universal Parent ™* PAY THE BILLS. *sniffs from me* Fine. Bills then books. If life were the right way around, it’d be the other way.”

However, reading the post today reminded me that I am not alone in wanting to control the books I buy so I do want to add my support to the other readers that welcomed the option of Bookfunnel to buy your books. I am boycotting Amazon for many reasons so please continue to offer this option.
Also, if you decide to sell to us directly, I would definitely use that method as well.
