Blog, Business of Writing POST A COMMENT February 12, 2026 by Moderator R

V. asked yesterday:

Mod R, could you perhaps organize an eligibility post of Andrews 2025 works that could be nominated for the upcoming award season (Nebula, Hugos, etc) – like The Inheritance? I have my little list, but I always worry that I’m forgetting something or that I’ve gotten the category wrong (novel length? novella?), and the season is upon us. Others might find it useful too.

Thank you so much for your question, V! I will try my best, but if I’ve misunderstood something or missed a relevant award, please feel free to correct me or add to the list in the comments.

The eligible House Andrews publication for the 2025 awards is The Inheritance (Breach Wars book 1).

The Inheritance is:

  • a novel
  • the genre is Sci-Fi/Fantasy
  • first in a new series
  • released in ebook, print and audio formats

It is also a self-published work, but as far as I’ve been able to tell, that does not influence whether it can be nominated or not in most cases.

For those of you keeping score, these length boundaries are somewhat disputed, but the generally accepted demarcations are: a short story is under 7,500 words; a novelette runs 7,500–17,500 words; a novella registers between 17,500–40,000 words; and finally a novel is 40,000+ words. At 75,000, the Inheritance is firmly in novel territory.

Major Awards in Bookworld that Inheritance qualifies for:

Nebula Awards

Presented by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association (SFWA).

How to nominate and vote for The Inheritance: Nebulas are nominated and juried by SFWA members (other authors).

Hugo Awards

Presented by the World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon), it is a fan-driven account.

How to nominate and vote for The Inheritance: You are eligible to nominate for the Hugo Awards if you became a member of LAcon V by January 31, 2026, or were a member of the Seattle Worldcon 2025. The final ballot will be announced in April, and only members of LAcon V will be able to vote for the winners in each category – according to Hugos website.

The Dragon Awards

Presented at Dragon Con, entirely fan voted.

For more, like the Goodreads Choice Awards and the Locus lists, we will probably have to w*it until This Kingdom will Not Kill Me is published this year (only 47 days left, y’all!).

A final note from the heart:

In my experience working with Ilona and Gordon for years and years, they do not operate with awards strategy spreadsheets. Write the book, release the book, and go back to writing the next one – that’s always been the rhythm.

I don’t often speak for House Andrews, but in this I am certain: the Horde is the only award that truly matters. As long as we all read the books, keep getting passionate about them and continue showing up in our patented fluffy and (sometimes slightly) scary Horde way, we are enough. And we are beloved.

I think I am on my tenth reread of The Inheritance. I alternate between the printed version and the ebook. I love paper books, but the wonderful illustrations are in black and white. So, I go next with the ebook because not only can I see the art in color, I can blow each picture up and savor all the outstanding details Candice Slater put into each masterpiece.
I keep going to Ms Slater’s website in hopes that she will offer colored prints of each illustration that I can slip between the pages of my printed book! Speaking of awards, I would hope she would nominated for best artwork. For heavens sake, she obviously READ the whole book!!!! Wouldn’t it be awesome if Ilona, Gordon, AND Candice all won Hugos and Nebulas!?
Candice’s other artwork is amazing, too. maybe she can get a book published of all her work? I always buy those books by sci-fi artists.

Love to the Horde! Thank goodness we have an appreciative home.

“Worst use of language to resolve a conflict”? Not sure, but somebody’s got to have the perfect Kate quote here

“Most homecoming queen behavior”? Who would win, between Bestata and Adam Pierce?

        Speaking of Adam, “Best t-shirt”?

  14. Morgane says

    February 12, 2026 at 1:05 pm

Interesting! I went and checked out the Dragon Awards…
The form on the Dragon Con website to submit a book for the awards describes a Science Fiction novel as “containing and based upon scientific or science and engineering premises or technology” and a Fantasy novel as “containing and based upon magic, gods, demons, ghosts, paranormal events, or mythic creatures”. But a novel can only be nominated for 1 category, otherwise the nominations are cancelled. I have to say, I feel like it could belong to both categories, leaning a bit more towards Sci-Fi but I’m not sure. So, which one should I nominate it for???

    • Morgane says

      February 12, 2026 at 1:07 pm

I forgot to actually say: I’m talking about The Inheritance lol

    • Moderator R says

      February 12, 2026 at 1:25 pm

      I think you’re right and it’s more Sci-Fi 🙂

      • Kat in NJ says

        February 12, 2026 at 8:32 pm

(Whew!!!!) I nominated The Inheritance in the category of Sci Fi without really thinking too much about it or asking first…I’m glad it seems like that was probably right.

I’m a tiny bit discombobulated today. I went to my weekly volunteer ‘job’ reading at a nursery school today, and because several of the other volunteers didn’t show up, I read to five littles instead of only two. It was fun, but VERY chaotic and VERY loud, and my brain is sooooooo done for the day! 😂

      • Joy Wilson says

        February 13, 2026 at 6:40 pm

I nominated The Inheritance for best sci-fi novel and Candice Slater for best cover illustration (ebook and print) at Dragon Con.
        I hope that works

    • Ashley says

      February 13, 2026 at 12:05 pm

Very curious why people are leaning towards sci-fi. Maggie enters a fantasy book world makes Inheritance squarely fantasy imo

Even with all the different controversies over the years, how cool would it be to win a Hugo? I mean, it’s a Hugo. . .

I used be on the awards like they were the Oscars, except I never had any interest in the Oscars.
But then I grew older and my interests widened and I still loved my first love SF, but I saw it’s fandom could be a bit . . . narrow minded at times, and then there were all the other issues, but damn, a Hugo would still be a Hugo.

If you’re a Hugo finalist I am so buying the pb with a sticker on! (Still got my LMB Mirror Dance pb with a sticker on my shelves)

    Vote Andrews!

Maybe a ‘Finished Everything’ mug? Or tshirt? Was there a magnet already?

We r a beloved Horde. I do worry that our vast love for HA could someday b like when Catalina uses her powers and ppl’s love turns scary dangerous for her.

Perhaps now is a good time to practice being a fluffy Horde? Ok, everyone-maximum fluffiness! Hold it…hold it…relax and reread. Ok, good work, y’all! Let’s all try to keep doing daily fluffiness training. We know we need to b ready for March is coming. Those last few weeks before a new bk will really challenge our fluffiness. And no, Steve, just because u could fit another mug on the ‘rear display window shelf ‘ in your car does not mean u ‘need’ more mugs. Everyone who ordered a mug (yes, Steve, that means u!) should do an extra round of fluffercise. (Hoping that does not have unfortunate and unintended implications.)

(Hugs) to the Horde, Mod. R and HA

Your closing comment about how House Andrews approaches their work and art, as well as why the do it, is why I read everything they’ve written that I can access. I’ve read most in real-time, over decades. I had to discover that I belonged to the Book Devouring Horde.

The fact that House Andrews will build a platform that invites us to read and contribute to their work is why I will always be a member of this Horde. And bake.
