My sympathies on your loss. I understand the happiness of something to look forward to while dealing with a loss. The Innkeeper chapters kept me going when each of my parents passed away.

It’s been a rough week, so glad this posted this morning! It was brilliant, as always.

Yaaaas! You’ve addressed one of the issues both Maud and I are deeply concerned about, namely, what would happen if House Kraghr were to kick Arland out, stripping away his titles, honors, money and everything and he had to start over. I wondered if he truly understood the ramifications. I underestimated Arland and his mom. It’s so good to know that his mom walked away from her house to marry his father and I am assuming that House Kragher was considered a minor unimportant house compared to the house that she came from. Now I’m so curious about mom’s former house and her current relationship to it, Garland’s siblings, and his relationship with his stepfather. I am so looking forward to some answers to this and many other questions in my head. I can’t wait to purchase this. Best Innkeeper ever!!
Oona says
Good point. Is it possible that someone in Ilemina’s old house is out to take out Ilemina and take down Krahr and has allied with Otubar by filling his ears with the “anti-brotherhood” line thus poisoning Otubar subtly against Arland (sow discord among your enemies)? Otubar certainly works to undermine Arland’s authority. Very Shakespearan feel to that situation! This only occurs to me because Ilemina may have made some serious enemies upon leaving her House and with any political moves she may have made since then. I’ll have to go back and re-read because I forgot which Houses developed the world flower, but those houses knew intimately of its capabilities, not just Karhr. And I keep coming back to the fact that Arland’s been innoculated against the Flower now by Caldenia’s serum, so if he were to face it again, he might well survive on his own without intervention (although it wouldn’t be a comfortable event). But the Vampires don’t know that part about Arland as one of the other BDH posters pointed out. Plots within Plots! Soo enjoying this story. 🙂
Joan says
Good point Carol and thank you Oona for reminding me about the world flower – I’d forgotten. Plots within plots indeed ?

Thank you for this kindness that you provide us with on a weekly basis. I’m sitting here panting — this was absolutely sensational. Can’t wait to purchase this novel so I can read it over and over again. Do you have a release date yet?
Ree I’m so sorry for your loss – my prayers to you and yours during this difficult time.

I can’t tell you how much I love Sweep of the Blade. I mean, I love everything you write, but THIS has become my favorite story ever. Maud is so fierce and so tender at the same time. Whatever she does, she does wholeheartedly and I think Arland is a perfect match for her. Helen is beyond adorable and I just love all of them to pieces.
Please don’t take this the wrong way, but I’d MUCH rather have a Maud & Arland book series than a Hugh one … maybe the next series? Pretty please?
Phyllis says
I totally agree. I love Maud and couldn’t care less about Hugh!!

Nice!
Hey Ilona I have a question for you.
I *think* I read somewhere that Maud’s story is a novella (which I looked up as a text written in length of 7,500 (or 17,500 I got multiple answers lol) up to 40,000 words. Which is a big length range! So how far are we in this story, and/or how many chapters can we expect? Curious minds would like to know. 😉

Love this whole book. Really would like to purchase the whole thing now!
Nancyc says
So while I wait for my weekly fix of new stuff, I re-read all of the other Authorlord publications. What else is there to do? lol but true.
While re-reading Cleam Sweep I noticed a couple things:
1) Arland refers to Soren’s daughter and heir as Renadra
does Soren have another daughters?
2) Arland’s cousin, the traitor Orig, said “This alliance, this brotherhood, you and your father dragged us into. It’s not good for anyone. We’ve had two years of peace. Two years of no raids, no challenges, no glory.”
does this mean Arland’s father departure is recent?
Or are both these thing just “pre-editing” stuff? (Never read pre-edited before this story posting.)

Wow again! This mother and son discussion hit several points for me. First I was very impressed by the way Arland handled both the discussion and himself. He certainly let his mother know that he was quite displeased with her actions, but he didn’t rant, rave or lose control. Second, not only does Arland seem mindful of how he would be perceived by others, (when Otubar challenged him in public), he was very aware of the responsibilities he has as the Marshall of House Krahr. Third, he has thought about the ramifications of his bonding with Maud without the approval of the Preceptor of his house. And made a rational decision to do it anyway. Arland is a lot more experienced and mature than Maud previously gave him credit for. (Maybe not really a “blond idiot “?) Finally, though this isn’t a part of the discussion, seeing the picture of Arland again reminded me how much I really liked it.
However, now that Maud is feeling all soft and gushy towards him, Arland will surely put his size humongous foot in it.
Hat says
Thank you, this is such a godsend.
Ellie says
I’m probably the odd man out on this but I’m just not feeling Maud and Arland’s relationship at this point. There is a disconnect. How is he in love with her or her with him? They’ve only had a few short moments together, they haven’t even kissed, let alone held hands. I feel like he’s in love with the idea of her. I love Kate with Curran, I love Nevada with Rogan, and I like Dina with Sean. Maybe I’ll wait to read this book in its entirety when it’s completed. As a mother of a son, I wouldn’t like Maud either (from that perspective) and Arland’s being disrespectful to his mother.
Joan says
I don’t think that Arland is disrespectful to his mother. She just tried to kill the women he loves, so he’s laying everything out in the open and being totally honest with his mother. He’s telling his mother how much he loves Maud, how important she is to him and what he is prepared to sacrifice to be with her.
JO says
Out of curiosity, did you read One Fell Sweep? Most of the Maid-Arland relationship development happened there. In this story alone, thus far, I agree that strong love isn’t totally believable. I think Arland could have communicated more with his mother but otherwise don’t find his behavior offensive. What did you find disrespectful?
Ellie says
I didn’t mean Arland was being disrespectful during the conversation, I’m talking about all his actions leading up to it. He doesn’t talk to her, he just expects things. Ilemina said she wasn’t trying to kill Maud, she was frustrated. Don’t get me wrong I like Maud and Arland, I read One Fell Sweep. They only had a handful of scenes in that too. I didn’t totally believe his “Epic Speech” and it could just be this “Insta-love” that I’m not buying into. Arland thinks Maud loves him but she’s still too closed off for that, she hasn’t healed from her trauma. For me, it’s too much, too soon for Maud. She shouldn’t have followed him and dragging your kid along, when Helen finally felt like she had security & a home at Dina’s, seems rash and irresponsible as a mother. Also knowing you’ll be facing adversity and unwelcoming people and subjecting your kid to that. She should be putting her daughters well being first, especially with what she’s already had to endure.
Ellie says
It reminds me of the decision Nevada made when Rogan asked her to go away with him. Obviously, Maud going with Arland continues the story line just like Nevada choosing not to go with Rogan set up the story line for the 2nd book. I also understand we aren’t all going to like the decisions the characters are going to make. I guess that’s why Ilona is such an amazing writer, because we become invested in their characters.
