In fandom lingo, shipping refers to wanting and advocating for a romantic relationship between two characters. Their names are typically meshed together into a portmanteau which becomes the name of the ship (think Brangelina). You will read things like “I ship these two!” and “I’m boarding that ship!” meaning the readers want to see the two characters get together. None of these have happened yet. Sometimes there are memes (le understatement).

The Book Devouring Horde has quite the naval force hehe.

The Metal Rose– the Capital Ship of the BDH. This involves Julie and Derek, and the name is based on the scene from Chapter 11 of Magic Burns, when Derek fashioned her a rose out of a metal coffee can and some nails. Julie has kept the rose all this time, but some of us have carried it in our hearts for 14 long years. Unsurprisingly, Team Metal Rose is pretty hardcore. We would actually go down with this ship. We won’t put our hands up or surrender. There will be no white flag above our doors and wow, am I dating myself.

I think probably my favourite example of how deeply invested people are in this ship was during the discussion that followed the bathtub scene in Blood Heir, back when it was a weekly serial. Speculation was rife whether he had seen the metal rose and therefore recognised Julie. And then, someone suggested that Derek would not remember even if he did see it, that it was just a toy, which he forgot 5 minutes after he made, because the scene did not have the same impact for him as it did for Julie.

“You found a way to hurt me” Hannibal says.

Reeling and bleeding from such a vicious attack, Team Metal Rose picked ourselves up and countered with the theory that Derek probably fashions a metal rose every day he thinks about Julie. Every day. Somewhere in Alaska, there’s a Monte Cristo style cave, with hundreds of metal roses in it! Melodramatic, us?!

The few dinghies floating alongside The Metal Rose are Julie/Ascanio and Julie/Yu Fong the dragon. They’re…cute for trying. The Julie/Saiman water raft sank under friendly fire (as in: Kill It With!).

Karakun– the newest and most high tech of the ships.

Commander Karat of House Krahr, favourite cousin of Arland and best friend of Maud, has chemistry with none other than Dagorkun, the Under-Khan of the Hope Crushing Horde. We first met him in Sweep in Peace as the son of the Khanum, and he’s currently visiting Gertrude Hunt as observer of the spousal selection. All they’ve done was stare each other down and agree a couple of times in conversation, but if you’re a shipper you know that means LURVE.

Miss “I’m too sane to fall in love“. Honestly, it’s like she doesn’t know the romance gods are always listening and wants to tempt them!

Anyway, so the BDH thinks the wedding will probably happen in spring, the bride will wear on-the-shoulder syn-armour, and they’ll settle on the space station near Daesyn – because it’s neutral territory in the vampires vs otrokars feud. The assumptions regarding Lord Soren’s reaction when he finds out are getting more hilarious each week. Barrels of espresso might not be enough!

Michella– Arabella ships are the bread and butter of the BDH navy.

Partly fuelled by House Andrews who said that Arabella’s books, if they happen, would feature several possible love interests until she settled on “the One”, the youngest Baylor is shipped with a lot of suitors. The main ones are Michella (Arabella/Record Keeper Michael) and Jiarabella (which evolved to Jingllebella) for either Stephen or Henry Jiang, the Aquakinetic Prime sons of House Jiang. Or maybe a Madero, or the mysterious sibling of Pancakes Montgomery or yet someone new from Ruby Fever…but I have said too much.

All we know is that we want our girl to have her adventures and take us with her!

Penhiro– The ship that must be protected at all cost. Penelope Baylor and Benjiro Heart, Rogan’s second in command, have had a warm and delicate relationship slowly blooming between them. With whispers and careful steps around it, both the Baylors and the BDH want to nurture it at all cost. This one must never feel rough seas.

Recovered at sea– Thought lost forever or shipwrecked, Sweep of the Heart also brought to port, after many years but more awesome than ever, a long awaited HEA. I cannot speak its name here, because I know not everyone reads SotH in serial form and I don’t want to spoil them before the book is published, but it’s in Chapter 9 part 2.

Gorvar and Beast– Speaking of Sweep of the Heart, you (gender neutral) guys… I don’t know about this one. Brings whole new meanings to screwing the pooch (I’m incorrigible, I know!).

 Auul Tzu puppies would be terrifyingly cute, though.

When evil things get injured, sometimes they find this ship: Not a BDH ship, this is my personal yacht, because Mod Prerogatives and all that.

This is Roman, Chernobog’s volhv. He likes his personal space.

His name isn’t even Semionovich, it’s Roman Grigorievich Tihomirov so I got that wrong for a start.

I am Mod R. I *also* like Roman’s personal space.

Apparently, I’ll have to contend with some witch. Pfft. I’ll keep hoping for the NY Times bestseller Volhvs in Moderation!

  2. Well, if four years in the Navy in a Fleet Rate without stepping foot on a ship did not make it clear that I was doomed to die a landlubber, this does the job. (Even though I love the line “a tall ship and a star to steer her by.”) Aside from the obvious ones I have no preferences for them. And I truly loved the HEA that must not be named at this time. It was/is glorious.

  10. Karakun would be a blast, just for the consequences. As far as I am concerned, Metal Rose is a must, Michella is really worth exploring, Michael being such an enigma, and Penhiro would be so sweet – Penelope deserves to find happiness again. So many possibilities, so little time!!!

  11. I definitely sail the Metal Rose ship! But I don’t think the rose is as special to Derek as it is for Julie or us. He said in Blood Heir that she was a little kid and that they were a good team. So I think that he’s romantic feelings for her has awoken with Aurelia because like she said to him “That man didn’t want Julie Olsen, but here we are, with you staring at me like you need me to keep breathing.”

    I also sail the Jingllebella ship, it looks like a mighty fine ship 🙂

    • In Magic Stars (? one of the short stories) he is immune to the enchantment magic because he has already given his heart to another. And this did not surprise him.

      • Ok, I thought it said that he belong to someone else and I wasn’t sure if it meant that he “belonged” to Kate (some lingering bond from the binding) I never really thought that it meant Julie ????

    • I agree- I don’t think the rose is as special for Derek as it is with Julie, but I do think he would be touched that she still has it. Derek shows Julie affection in his own way but I need Kissy face to happen before I believe that TMR has set sail.

  16. IDK how spoilers are handled for books released in serial, because I understand some people are reading and some aren’t. But I just want to mention the items in this post regarding “recovered at sea” are a spoiler I wish I never saw :(. The original post alluding to a long-awaiting HEA (without clicking the link) gave me enough information to make an educated guess. Then there were a couple comments that all but verified my guess. I understand if my takeaway needs to be I just can’t have the expectations that things won’t be spoiled when a serial is going on and I need to avoid the blog. Just wanted to mention that this specific situation took me beyond what I would have wanted to know in a post that I thought was spoiler-safe. Will still continue to adore House Andrews and Mod R.

    • I am sorry you were spoilered against your will. But I hop it’s a little consolation for you, that the story behind the recovered ship is fantastic and you will love it and I swear, you won’t be able to guess, how that recovering was done! Enjoy waiting for it ????

  18. What about Marland? The BDH started that ship the minute Maud decapitated someone in front of Arland during One Fell Sweep.

    • Yes, but Maud and Arland are pretty set as a canon couple. These are strictly those who have not come to pass on the page (yet).

Karakun: Maud will convince the entirety of House Krahr that Lady Karat has executed the diplomatic coup of the millennium by assuring future mutual military and diplomatic ties between House Krahr and Dagorkum’s family. Then Dina and Her Grace will convince Khan and Khanum that Dagorkum has executed the diplomatic coup of the millennium for the same reasons. There will be some spectacular battles between members of the two families at the wedding, and the wedding will be remembered as the social event of the millennium, and everyone not in attendees will choke on their envy every time they are reminded they weren’t there.

    I am leaning toward Michella – Arabella needs someone whose magic is as intimidating as hers. But if someone new shows up in Ruby Fever, then I will have an open mind.

    Roman needs a partner.

    I also think Tatyana Pierce and Cornelius would be a good pairing.

      • They’re not really direct enemies, more like enemies by association. Both were “victims ” of Adam and his mother–manipulation, cruelty, homicidal tendencies. I think the conversation they had during the swamp investigation showed each other their scars. Maybe not shipworthy but something?

    • So, is it a Tatyelius ship? Or Coryana? I like both names and would like a place on this ship. It would also be an interesting story to read, how this will come to pass ????

    As to Derek not remembering the rose: Even if he doesn’t (which could have a lot of potential causes having nothing to do with indifference), judging from the multitude of artists and craftspeople who have passed through my life, he would damn well recognize his own work!

    • Oh, yes. I have no particular opinion on who Arabella ends up with, since my own personal favorite is apparently aged out of the race; but I want her to have her own trilogy.

    Can’t wait for Arabellas story, but right now I have not joined any ships yet. But I have this crazy idea that she will get accidentally pregnant, because of how she said she was never, ever getting pregnant after being with Nevada at the hospital. And I know that her mom and sisters will have made sure she knows all about birhtcontrol, but her magic is so different and maybe that would mess with it. Like I said, crazy idea but after her saing never, ever, ever, it could be a fun twist to her story.

  25. O.M.G Mod R, you have captured the flotilla nicely….although I think of Penhiro as a nuclear powered missile carrying submarine. After all, Pen is a distance sharp shooter (aka ICBM)and Benjiro is stealthily navigating the the mines…and the family can only infer what is happening below the surface.

    And as a hard core Team Metal Rose adherent…Derek does not have a heap of metal roses, he has one…that as you twirl it between your fingers, it also reveals a profile of Julie.

    Baylor women get their men, and I think that Jinglebella will rule!

    And then, gift of the gifts, a picture of Mads Mikkelsen. I’m like the biggest fan of the man, totally crazy about him. Like you with Roman level.   31. Ok, first of all, the post itself is delightfully written and made me laugh several times, thank you Mod R. Now about the various boats floating around:

    The Metal Rose is not just a ship, it is unsinkable tanker, people who see other sails on the horizon have been smoking something funny, probably.

    Karakun is sailing among the stars with gleeful determination, much like Arland’s destroyer, and I’m all for it, mostly because i want to see what new and never heard of colour Lord Soren’s face will display.

    As for Arabella, I think all of her ships will go Titanic on us, but that’s totally fine, we’ve had enough one true love from first book – give me hilarious aventures and I’m on board.

    Btw, whoever came up with Gorver/Beast is loony and “screwing the pooch” keeps cracking me up.

    Other ships I sail for are Team Metal Rose (Julek? Derrie?) and Karakun! And Penhiro! Not sure about Beast and Gorvar, more due to the size disparity than anything (that pooch would be screwed for sure, ouch!).

  61. I am all about Metal Rose!! I have been finding it difficult to maintain decorum and not badger HA weekly, asking when we might anticipate the next book in that series. I am tied up in knots, waiting to see what happens next for Julie and Derek!!

    I also find myself firmly behind Karakun. It has such a Romeo and Juliet vibe. ???? It also holds so many delicious possibilities with all of the family members from each side! Arland faced difficulties when he brought Maud (the human) home, but at least she wasn’t a member of the Hope Crushing Horde!! Oh the possibilities for drama that exist with Karakun!!! ????

  65. Team Metal Rose because Julie/ Aurelia andDerek deserve their HEA.

    I’m not sure about Karakun. So far I see Karat and Dagorkun as friends and allies but not necessarily romantic partners. I like that Dina’s inn has become somewhere where members of rival/ enemy groups can forge acceptance of, and sometimes friendship towards, different “others”. So much better than always resorting to war to resolve differences.

    Yes please to a Roman and Gordon’s “ that witch girl” story.

    Some characters who I can’t ship yet because I haven’t seen a suitable partner among the characters we’ve met so far but whom I would love to see featured in future stories are Karat, Klaus, Gaston and Jack from the Innkeeper universe. Plus I hope Chef Adri produces a niece or granddaughter who could keep Orro in line. If we jump 20 years in the future than Helen’s adventures would be fascinating!

    In the Hidden Legacy world I definitely want Arabella to have her HEA but I share other posters’ hesitancy about Stephan Jiang. He seems too preoccupied with family status to be accepting that under Arabella’s cute appearance is a ball of anger that manifests as the Beast of Cologne. I worry his family would see her as a monster and this would sour the relationship.

    I do want Penelope to have her happy ending with Benjiro.

    I would love to see Augustine in a tangle over someone ( Cornelius’s sister Diane?) . He spends so much effort presenting a particular image to the world it would be great to see him unravel over a love interest.

    Plus Leon and maybe Alessandro’s sister.

    Plus more Kinsmen please, especially Ramona’s brother Karion’s story. Hopefully the story will include some Easter eggs that tell us how Claire and Venturo and Meli and Celino are faring. Don’t know who to ship Karion with but his loyalty to Ramona won my admiration.

    House Andrews has written such interesting worlds and great characters that I can see years of self published novellas exploring those characters’
    adventures.

Karakun is sweet, but I feel like Soren and the Khan family are going to need an Arbitrator to negotiate most things, even simple questions like what happens if a major Vampire holiday falls on an Otrokar holiday? And don’t get me started about Soren and the Khanum as grandparents. It would be hilarious, but I feel for Dagorkun and Karat too much to give them that kind of crazy.

  77. Karakun so far. I just think it would be funny because Karat didn’t seem like someone who was good at learning about other peoples cultures. Which means there’s a good chance humour would ensure. She might actually fit into Otrokar’s culture.
    The biggest is probably because I really want to see how she’s gonna do with riding.????????????
    Her getting accidentally pregnant would be… like… the funniest thing EVER! No?????????????

  80. I’m totally team Metal Rose, BUT…
    I don’t believe that Julie and Derek should become a couple quite yet. I want them both to develop feelings for somebody else first. I want them to know, that they can be happy without one another. I want them to choose each other because they’re best with each other, not because they’re lost without each other.
    In my Ideal fantasy, Julie would meet someone whom she likes quite a bit, for whom she develops a genuine affection, and who would also be a great political alliance for her. They would become engaged, and then, the engagement would break for external reasons, for instance, because politics demand it and they have also grown apart due to divided loyalties. Because sometimes, relationships break even though people remain affectionate toward each other because of logistics and other circumstances. And I want something similar for Derek. I want them both to know for certain, that they are capable of loving someone else and that they could find genuine happiness with somebody else.
    And then I want them to acknowledge, that even though they could be happy and content apart, together they are happiest and strongest. And They would discover that, by overcoming the exact difficulty, which broke their other relationships.

    I’m pretty sure, that’s not gonna happen though. They’re on a roll now and they are not gonna slow down XD. I still hope though, that they will choose one another instead of feeling that they need one another.
