Since the Oscars are just around the corner, it seems only fair that the Book Devouring Horde hold their own awards ceremony.

Andrea donated some extra-long purple shag carpet and Steve said any machine is a smoke machine if he operates it, so the ceremony part is clearly handled.
We just need you to pick the most beloved winners. Polls will stay open until next Friday and I’ve tried (operative word) to enable multiple options. You should be able to choose two answers in these, the most impossible of choices. Mwahaha!
Everything happened so much this week, why not pour your favourite drink and relax by thinking about your favourite among these capable, fierce men:
Best Male Lead in an Ilona Andrews Book or Series
- Curran Lennart - Kate Daniels World (25%, 3,213 Votes)
- Connor Rogan - Hidden Legacy (21%, 2,698 Votes)
- Hugh d'Ambray - Iron Covenant (15%, 1,878 Votes)
- Sean Evans - Innkeeper Chronicles (11%, 1,437 Votes)
- Roman Tihomirov - Sanctuary (10%, 1,242 Votes)
- Arland Krahr - Innkeeper Chronicles (9%, 1,169 Votes)
- Alessandro Sagredo - Hidden Legacy (7%, 912 Votes)
- William, Lord Sandine - Bayou Moon (2%, 296 Votes)
Total Voters: 8,961
But Mod R, there’s only one leading man from the Edge! So much squandered hunkiness! Yes, he’s my favourite, I love him the best, and this is my poll *phhhrrrrbttt*.
Now it’s your turn to nominate:
Suppose you wake up in an Ilona Andrews world* the way Maggie does in This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me: cold, confused, and very much alone. The protagonists are busy saving the day, so they’re not available to help you. Which supporting character do you go looking for first?
*Because the Innkeeper world is our world, we’ll mix it up and have you waking up in Baha-char, with nothing on you, not even a sneaker to trade the muckrats.
And if you can’t wait to find out how Maggie handled the world of her favourite series, reminder that the first chapters of This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me are currently running as a serial over at Reactor Magazine and are available as an extended preview for readers served by the US edition.
Take care out there, BDH!

I’d find the door to the Inn and wait for Dina and Sean to open it up. Then ask for help. Or find Wilmos and beg for a job so I could live until Dina or Sean came in then ask for help to get home.
If I was dropped in one of the IA worlds, I’d hope it would be the Innkeeper’s world. I would love to have the help of Her Grace, Caldenia ka ret Magren. Simply the choice of Funyuns and Mello Yellow are great indicators of taste and true intelligence. She appreciates the delicate use of gossip as an aided benefit in understanding the dynamics in her present community. With her worldview and her personal experiences, I am quite sure I’d die a heroic death😂
Hmm – which character would I go to for support if I end up naked, cold and alone in one of the worlds …???
Well, Arabella … but she is not really a secondary character. So …
… Roman?
… If I have enough money, Augustine?
… Conlan?
… Gaston? Jack? … not George … heaven forbid!
George would get all of us into trouble. 🤦♀️
Then he would have to explain to Sophie.
love them all but had to go with the first characters I read by Ilona Andrews and that is KATE , CURRAN… they are still my favs!
side character: Leon, he doesn’t get enough LOVE
I am believer in strategy. Orro first. We will use the enticing aromas from his food to lure in Caldenia, Cookie, Wilmos, Luther, Derek, Roman, Christopher Steed, Hugh, Elara, space chickens, the Hopecrushing Horde, Bug, Runa, Bern, Leon, etc. It will be only minutes before I have an unstoppable military! Besides, there’s some chicken I need to try!
Mod R, I wasn’t thinking when I entered my name. Can it be adjusted to just Thio?
Thank you!
I have to agree if in Baha char, it would be The First Scholar. My story would give me currency. Then I would be off to the Inn
If my main concern is getting out alive I would strongly consider picking Hugh ….. but he’s such as asshole and I am sure I would end up wanting to stab him in his sleep even if he was helping.
I think I would pick Maud. Especially since we are on Baha Char. The more I think about it she would probably be a better pick all things considered even if it wasn’t Baha Char. I think she might be better trained and possibly more experienced in survival skills and definitely more skilled in diplomacy and gaining allies.
It occurred to me that both my picks evolved from side characters to being main characters in their own books. so aren’t eligible picks ::face palm::
I pick George. He might even be the superior pick to Maud actually.
If I wake up in Hidden Legacy, I’ll probably go look for Garen Schaffer, because he would know I’m telling the truth 🙂
If I wake up in Kate Daniels world, I would ask for help from any Order Knight I could find 🙂
Oh, I’d look for Cookie, up and coming, hungry to make his mark, I think I could trade information for help with him.
Orro, because he will feed me.
OR (because we get 2 choices)
Officer Marais, because he will take care of me!
+1 to officer Marais!
George 😎
Going for Erra. she means business and is doing a lot behind the scenes these days protecting humanity.
U.S.
Rebekah the Original– because my name is the biblical spelling but people are always saying “what a weird way to spell Rebecca.”
Horde Daniels, because I’m hoping Kate and Curran might be open to a Sister Wives situation. 🙂
Have you met Kate????!!!! 🤔
lol, too true!
The only right person to find is Nevada baylor because she is the only one who will know you’re telling the truth and not crazy 😭… except wait we know from the murderer she confronted as the lady in green that if someone believes it’s true it reads true … so we are screwed haha
Innkeeper: On Baha-char I’d definitely look for Cookie but I’d be very very careful what I traded for help.
Kate’s World: Andrea
Inheritance: Leo or maybe Jackson
Hidden Legacy: Leon or Penelope
If I’m on Baha-char, I need Cookie!
Andrea of course, and I would tell her all about it!
My first instinct said DO NOT find Nuan Cee!!!!! I think I’d go find Gorvar. Lots of ear and tummy scratches later, he could protect me, help me find food and introduce me to Wilmos as a possible janitor. A job with in a place with mercenaries would probably be safe. I could meet Dina and Sean when they came to replenish defensive supplies for Gertrude Hunt, and let them know I started in Texas just up the road from Austin – I might get home and still be offered lemon muffins!!!!
Love this!! Me, too!!
Except in Houston, near the Office of Records on Fannin Street, which is only a couple hours drive from Austin really….
Wilmos!!!
I would go straight to Wilmos because he understands losing one’s home world.
I’m gonna leave a comment now before I absolutely fail to pick just 2 favorites.. SIGHHH.. How are supposed to choose just 2?? Can’t we just choose all??
Back to the mental anguish..
Dali! Because she might be curious enough to help. Then we could drag race together.
After her, Roman. Because Roman.
After him, the combined team of Arabella/Bern/Leon because they get sh*t done.
I’m out here looking for Luther. And hoping my genes don’t freak out when the magic hits 🤣
I’d wake up in post-shift Atlanta, and go bother Luther. I’d tell him my story, and have him lick me. Hopefully I have some really cool magic, and hopefully he believes me and doesn’t lock me up in an asylum…
Find Nuan Cee and ask for help getting to George. He’ll solve all my problems!
im going looking for chuckles, what else does one do but go looking for the most beloved kicking mammoth donkey, teaching street taggers a lesson few teeth at a time 🤣
darn auto correct, Cuddles* n9t chuckles. smh
If I were lost in the IloAnderVerse, I would go looking for Dr. Doolittle, or Arabella. I think either of them would be willing to listen to my situation and help. Dr. Doolittle may not believe me, and might think I’m crazy but that would just make him want to help even more.
If I landed in Baha Char, I would go find Wilmos. Most useful non-primary character who would also be the most likely to hear me out and/or offer assistance or info to someone down on their luck but knowledgeable and brave (you’d have to be brave to not simply sit down and give up upon suddenly finding yourself in an alien world).
going to have to turn on my bdh badge
I cant place Steve of the smoke machine Mod R referenced?!?
Steve is from the blog, not the books, and basically after a first mention by Ilona in the blog about what a BDH fandom afternoon tea would look like (yes, utter chaos indeed) the BDH more or less adopted fictional Steve as The Instigator of Shenanigans as well as a universal scapegoat of “it wasn’t us fluffy BDH folks, it was Steve who dunnit!” 😉
The smoke machine being a perfect example of the kind of shenanigans we can blame on,I mean expect from, Steve 😇
https://ilona-andrews.com/blog/fandom-tea-party-2/
Don’t know if I’m allowed to post links, might not, but this was The First Mention of Steve 😉
That line about any machine being a smoke machine in his hands is perfection. Thank you for that, ModR; it made my day, though I didn’t have time to comment.
thank you!
I’d head over to HL and look for Cornelius. It would be fun to hang out with an animal mage. 😊
I could’ve voted for 2 options? Aw man, too late. I couldn’t resist selecting the buttons before reading the instruction.
I would choose Andrea as my supporting character! I would need her emotional support and her gun smarts would be helpful I reckon….
I haven’t read the first chapters of TKWNKM yet, is it obvious? I won’t be able to without developing a lot of angst for the rest of it, I become way too emotionally invested in HA’s worlds. I have to read the whole book when I get it >.<
Thanks Mod R for the fun quiz! Beau Clayton in the Kate Daniels world and Cornelius Harrison in Hidden Legacy.
Not entirely sure why, bit the first thought on landing in Kate Daniels world was “Luther! Find Luther!”
Grandma Frida – she seems like a badass with a marshmallow heart
Dabrowski, Romans neighbor. He’ll turn me into fertilizer. The flu has got me in its claws. Fertilizer for Romans messed up yard, my final aim in life 😣
Feel better soon!
Thank you! On the mend now.
Excellent!
How dare you. HOW DARE YOU!!
I am NOT OKAY.
Never again will I participate in such a grossly unfair and down-right disloyal attempt at entertainment!!!!
All of those character are beloved and adored, cherished and respected by their BDH and we should NEVER AGAIN attempt to rate them like fleeting contestants in a low budget reality tv show. They are priceless and eternal in their narrative and in our hearts!
But it was fun to see so many names of characters I love and think about how fun it would be to have them all at Dina’s for a giant Andrews family holiday or something.
You guys write good people, who sometimes don’t do good stuff but usually do for good reasons.
Rant over. Excited for Maggie. Thanks for writing this blog!! Love it.
Oh and I would probably want to find Augustine, he would find a use for me in some way and hopefully Arabella would be around and would take pity on me.
Arabella of course!
If I landed in Baha-char, I would try to find the local Arbitrators and send a message to George. He would be the best to take advantage of my knowledge, and as long as I could help him he would help me.
I think it is highly likely tlhat the Arbitrators maintain a major branch in Baha-char, so I really like this idea.
Michael. I’m very curious about…Michael, Man of Mystery
Ada and Bear 🙂
Ada is heading there and as Sadrin will be superbly placed to help me out. Plus Bear, enough said.
+1
Best actors in a supporting role – Rose and William.
If I woke up in Baha-Char, I would try to find Cookie and negociate a safe passage to Dina’s Inn in exchange for information about the clan of lees appearing in The Inheritance.
As for Kate Daniel’s universe, depending on the time of my landing (in wich book), I would either try to see Barabas at the guild or maybe Andrea. They are easy to find and I can provide them with information in exchange for food and safety.
If I woke up alone and bewildered in the Hidden Legacy world, I’d probably go looking for Grandma Frida. She might not help but she would listen.
I’m kidnapping the nearest Lees and taking one to Cornelius as a bribe in return for being allowed to coo at the space tigers, obviously. My second choice would be Ascanio because I CAN TOTALLY FIX HIM.
Karion – I am sure nothing would get past him and with me being a civilian it would be the polite thing to do to offer me aid. Dalia’s customs would surely work in my favour here, right?
+1
Yea! Another Kinsmen aficionado!
Best supporting character: George
I’d look for the entrance to the Inn, and knock on the “door”, then I’d ask Dina or Sean how to rent a room, and once I’ve got that, I’d go back out to explore.
Uh, that’s a difficult question.
I would say, it’s Dali in the KD World or Julie 🙂
On the other hand, a chat with Grandma Frida would give me comfort.
I definitely feel like reading the KD series again 😉. Thank you Mod R for your excellent work on the blog and humor ❤️
Lady Augustine de Ney!
Julie is on the list of leading ladies but Derek is not on the list of leading men. He would def get one of my votes!
I would go to George. He would be very likely to believe me about different dimensions etc and he would be able to help or find someone to help.
Something’s up with the web page. I select two and try to click on “vote” and nothing happens. I tried selecting one and voting, then three….nothing happens.
Just for fun I clicked on “View results” as well and nothing.
Almost 5000 people voted, so the web page works 🙂 . The issue is likely with your cache, please clear it and try again.
George of course!
Nuan Cee! Cookie is all well & good, but he’s got nothing of the experience of Nuan Cee! I would keep a sharp eye out for Officer Marais, that’s for sure, if a bit of a long shot.
Roman!
Arabella Baylor. The Baylor’s consistently demonstrate a willingness to adopt strays with a disregard for common sense akin to pulling a feral kitten from the engine block of a stalled Bronco.
After Orro, I would pick Arabella too!
After my one pick, I would pick Arabella too!
If I wake up in Baha-char I will find Kristen because she had the best answer and she will really know what a predicament we are in.
Kate daniels world, probably try to find Roman first, for his connections to the witches, and his story isn’t finished yet, so I could take more of an active role.
I’d look for Clan Nuan Ce, specifically Cookie. I’ve read the Innkeeper Chronicles so many times…there must be something there worth some help/protection, lol. Knowledge as currency just like Maggie.
I would look for Oreo, because food equals survival!
Orro
I just got the email this morning & all the votes are closed. I never get to vote.
The votes are not closed, the polls are set for next Friday, as explained in the text 🙂 23 people voted since you left the comment. Please clear your cache and try again.
I want George Caramine as my helper. Smart. quick, gorgeous, and hell on wheels in a fight.
If I ended up in Baha-char I’d hope to find Maud. She is such a bad ass and would take care of any baddies around. Love Maud! Cookie would be a close second…he’s such a negotiator!
Hidden Legacy World. Grandma Frida would help.
The Little Lees from Inheritance❣️
Arabella. I’ll ask her to find me the perfect disguiseImeanclothing, then we’ll smash our way through from there
Of the male supporting characters, going to go with Luther or Dolittle, because they are scientists and unlikely to be thrown off balance by a naked woman, although at my age it’s probably not the issue it once would have been. Barabbas and Christopher, same.
Of the female supporting characters, the ones I would generally choose keep getting made into MCs. At this point, Andora and Arabella still qualify – barely – so I’m going with whichever of them takes longer to make MC status.
The Little Lees from Inheritance❣️He would take me to his clan to help me get to the inn and they wouldn’t mind that I had no clothes🤭
Jovo. My choice too
Hmmm. Since Sanctuary and he made the Poll Roman is no longer a Secondary Character right? This is HARD lol! One of the best features of House Andrews is the strength of the Secondary Characters! There are so many choices but today I pick Luther!
only one issue from me. I need, NEED an “All” button in these kinds of polls. Do you even know what choosing between these characters does to me? The cruelty is positively sublime. I am impressed.
I think I’d seek out Conlan Lennart. He may be young, but he’s kind and a quick learner, plus he combines genes from Kate and Curran.
If I were isekai’ed in Baha-char, I will run to Her Grace Caldenia ka ret Magren and offer my services as her lady in waiting! I will be an invisible helper at her beck and call. It will be a *cush* job since Gertrude does all the housekeeping including laundry, and Orro, all the cooking. All I have to do is help Her Grace with any thing too trivial she need not be concerned about. And if Her Grace permits it, “tend” her prized tomatoes with Gertrude Hunt.
My services will free up Dina from going to the store for funyuns and mello-yellows. I can run to Baha-Char for Her Grace’s shopping, etc.
Most advantageous of all, I will have the best seat as a spectator to all the things happening!
I would love this experience- just no truck-kun please!!
Omg, I SO want to be Caldenia’s Lady Danbury! Tomatoes and goss!
There might be side characters I enjoy reading about better but for who I would go to & trust (relatively) to actually help and look out for me?
Arabella or Dolittle
If I woke up in KD, I’d go find Luther. I think we’d get along, because I’d want to learn from him. And he’d protect me, hopefully.
I love Al your books. I am currently rereading Kate’s series. Thank you for your
Innkeeper books. I love that series also.
Just thank you for your work as my favorite author.
I’m also with Kristen!
If I was in the Hidden Legacy world, I’d absolutely try to find Arabella. Cheating? She’s not the lead yet… But if it didn’t work, and she would be busy saving the world, I’d find Bernard. Bernard and Runa could easily get me out of any trouble.
I’m going to find Wilmos. He’s a sucker for a sad story. He’ll deliver me to Dina’s door. I’ll get some advice from Her Grace.
Ok, I’m really struggling to remember who Steve is and why he’d run the smoke machine
Yep! Count me in with Kristen too! Couldn’t have chosen better (donuts too)
Thank you, ModR, for these wonderful creative diversion on a Friday. Truly grateful!
Thank you, Ilona and Gordon, for sharing your creative spirit with us and gifting us a whole slew of fully developed main and supporting characters we can relate to! The diversity of each of these kick butt females is extraordinary in their own way!
Thank you fellow Horde members for sharing your creativity as well!
May this little corner of the interweb be always a safe haven.
May we all find peace, health and safety in these ‘interesting’ times.
Aargh. The results will not show up for me. Oh, well, I know Kate and Curran are the bestest.
I would call on her bestie Andrea of course
Kristen has it, best one to help.
Fun!
I would go looking for Derek.
George, as a bonus I’d get Sophie because she wouldn’t let him go alone. So I’d have brains and danger on my side. Just sit back and watch George manipulate and scheme our way to safety and victory as Sophie levels the field.
Such fun
Kate’s world, I’m looking for Luther for badass t-shirt sourcing tips.
HL I am looking for Penelope, although this was close and I almost went with Grandma Frida – the clincher for me is that Penelope wouldn’t turn Rynda away when she came looking for help, but Grandma Frida would have. Mom energy for the win either way. To be fair, I am definitely not a threat to any of her grandchildren’s relationships, so there wouldn’t be that conflict of interest, but I just feel like Penelope has a slight edge in overall compassion that would be helpful in the situation.
Innkeeper, waking up on Baha-char, gotta go with space chickens as previously mentioned; getting in with the First Scholar will lead to all the goodies.
Inheritance I would go looking for Tia because she can assess me and will know I’m for real and let me snuggle with Bear (even though I’m a cat person, I would need Bear snuggles) while she explains to her mom that the strange lady is in a really weird situation and needs help.
Wow! I loved this post and everyone’s answers. This is why this community of the BDH is so fun. So many of us have creative imaginations. I certainly can’t top any of the suggestions, and agree with most!
My list of different supporting characters I would go to for help, gut response.
Caledania- she would be intrigued
Derek- heart of gold
George- high IQ, still compassionate ( pre Innkeeper crossover…I probably couldn’t find him unless he wanted to be found in the Innkeeper verse.)
Bernard- He ( or Bug) would already know I was there anyways…
Thanks for the fun! Great answers fellow BDH peeps!
Oh! I forgot Baha-char itself!
I would Definitely go the the Lees! If I am going to get roped in for an indenture, or some other huge favor in trade for help, at least there would be cuteness!
Clan Nuan Ce and Cookie that lil’ rascal!
The German Shepherd Bear because I’d be freaking out in Baha-char or anywhere outside of this world. But a dog could help, especially a super dog!
so far favorite series is Innkeeper and favorite book is Inheritance and yet my favorite heroine is oddly Nevada Baylor and Favorite hero Sean Evans, now how is that? Dont make me pick between Matilda and Helen that’s just beyond my ability! I think perhaps because an over all book or series is more than a single character or book. hmm also love kate daniels and the edge books as well, but if you make me pick, well other characters make an appearance. something to ponder I suppose!
If I woke up on Baha-char I’d be heading for Wilmos’ shop to get a sense of ‘when are we in the timeline’ and because he knows Many People. It never hurts to get a werewolf on your side! If Wilmos isn’t available, it’s time to hunt for Nuan Couki to trade knowledge of the events in The Inheritance for help getting home; surely Cookie could get me to another Inn so I could safely get home from there!
Waking up without means in Baha-Char I would go looking for Wilmos. Older, had raised children and knows how to look after others with an extra-what-dimensional? gate. Could help me find Seraphina. Rest and Silence finally.
It really was hard to choose for the contest. You make all the males and females so strong and they know what they want. I love your stories. Thank you for having such great imagination and you writing skills with descriptions are out of this world It’s easy to pretend you are there in the story
If I wake up in the Kate Daniels world, I’d find Barnabas and Christopher. If I woke up in the hidden legacy world I’m tracking down Cornelius or, depending on the situation, Leon.
that was hard to pick. love them all
Wilmos. He would be kind and help.
I hated to choose just one to vote for, they are all my favorites!
Well, I’m not magic, so there’s an immediate disadvantage. I’m reasonably smart and very good at research and analysis, and tech things. These gifts can be useful in a lot of fields even without magic.
I really only want to visit these worlds, not live in them. So first thing, I would get to Wilmos and try to get to Dina, who is on earth, thus getting back to my home planet. If I could pull that off, I’d call my brother in the Dallas area to come get me.
Once I got home, I would post on this site complaining about being snatched out of my comfy home and away from my sweet husband and dumped in a magic environment with nothing. Meanies!
If I was actually stuck in that world, I would still try to connect with Dina to find out how I could use my skills to support a business or House of some sort. I like eating and living indoors.
BTW, y’all would not leave me with no clothing in Baha Char. Guaranteed you would get a hella expensive fine for littering. Little old ladies are kinda scary, naked. Just sayin’!
