Mod R edit: If your preorder for This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me was cancelled, please do not panic! There is now a UK and Commonwealth edition of the book, previously announced and explained here. You will need to re-preorder the relevant edition for your region.

Bear and I trudged across another stone bridge, a vast drop below us. This part of the breach seemed to consist of massive caverns and deep shafts connected by short tunnels. Natural stone bridges crisscrossed the sheer drops. Water was scarce. I’d filled our canteens when we killed the lake dragon, and half of our water supply was gone. It made me nervous. I kept hoping for streams and not finding any.
We could probably get some moisture from the blood of the monsters we killed, but they had grown scarce too. Nobody barred our path. Maybe the inhabitants of the breach simultaneously decided that we were too much of a threat, but I doubted it. A few times I glimpsed creature corpses below, broken as if they had fallen from a great height. The fall wasn’t the only thing that killed them. The bodies were torn, shredded by something with terrible claws. And worse, nothing had touched them since their death. This place was full of scavengers, yet all of that meat was going to waste. There was only one answer: whatever slaughtered the creatures was so frightening, that nothing else dared to touch their kill.
The anchor was ahead and slightly to the right. We had been drawing closer, but our route didn’t run in a straight line. We were making circles around it, getting nearer in a spiral that became tighter and tighter.
Behind me, Bear halted. I turned. She was looking to our right, across the cavern. That side of the chamber lay shrouded in gloom.
Bear let out a quiet, deliberate woof.
Something was definitely there, in the darkness.
I flexed. My talent rolled outward, trying to measure the distance to the gloom, and falling short.
Woof.
Another stone bridge ran below us, leading to the right. It was a twenty-foot drop. If we got down there, I could use my rope to climb back up.
Woof.
“Okay. We’ll go check it out. Up!”
Bear leaped into my arms. I held her the same way I carried Mellow, my cream cat, and jumped down. We landed on the lower stone bridge. The impact punched through the soles of my feet into my legs. I stuck the landing like an Olympic gymnast. Maybe once I got out of here, I would go for a career change. Not many forty-year-old acrobats debuting out there. I’d be a sensation.
I let Bear down, and we headed toward the shadows.
What the hell would I do once I got out? First, I’d need to make sure Cold Chaos didn’t have a chance to unalive me as Tia would put it. I was living proof of their fuckup. A huge liability. A week ago, or however long it had been since we entered, I would have said that a major guild wouldn’t stoop that low. The risks were too great. But now I didn’t just expect the worst, I counted on it.
Assuming that we made it out alive and jumped the Cold Chaos hurdle, DDC would want the full account of what happened. I had two choices. First, I could demonstrate my newfound powers and come clean. Second, I could hide.
The first option meant … End of my life as I knew it. Possibly in more ways than one. I had encountered sentient, sapient lifeforms. I communicated with them, I traded with them, and I witnessed irrefutable evidence of other civilizations. Not just one vague amorphous enemy, but an entire constellation of different sophont species. Not beasts, not monsters. Thinking, feeling beings.
I couldn’t have been the first. The breaches had been active for nearly a decade. Thousands of gates, maybe a hundred thousand gate divers worldwide. Someone had to have seen what I’d seen, and yet there was no mention of it anywhere in the DDC archives. I worked for the fucking government. I had Top Secret clearance when it came to breach intel, and I had never come across anything like this. Which meant that somewhere, very high up, a decision was made to keep all of this suppressed.
It made sense in a way. As long as the breaches were populated with monsters, the public could deal with it. We all united in an effort to close them. The moment the evidence of alien civilizations and their representatives came to light, the defensive front would fracture. Some people would advocate for communication over violence. Some would try to broker peace, others to profit, a few would try to defect. It would be a mess wrapped in doubt and ethical navel gazing. People would enter the breaches with the best of intentions and die there.
If I opened that door or my mouth, the government, my employers, would disappear me. They probably wouldn’t kill me right away. First, they would confine me. I would be interrogated, studied, analyzed, and either quietly disposed of or made into a weapon. I was ridiculously easy to control. As long as the DDC held Tia and Noah hostage, I would do whatever they wanted. The lives of my children would be hanging in the balance.
No, hiding was my only option. When we walked out of that gate, I had to convince everyone that I was still Adaline Moore, an assessor and non-combatant, who wandered out of the breach by pure luck. Except that I probably looked different, I carried a magic sword, my dog was 25% larger than when we went in, and I would’ve survived in the breach for at least a week with no supplies, weapons, or combat Talents to protect me. Now that was truly unheard of.
Piece of cake. Right.
I had no idea how to pull that off. And worrying about it was premature. I had plenty of time to think of some kind of plan.
After five minutes of walking, we stopped before a hole in the wall. It was about ten feet across and roughly semicircular, as if cut in the rock. It reminded me of the small cave where Bear and I took shelter to fight off the mauve flowers. The hole looked empty and dark, except for one thing. A complex dial the size of a dessert plate hung in mid-air in the exact center of the opening.
I flexed. The entire entrance fluoresced with bright electric orange. No touching. A barrier, invisible to my normal vision. Only the dial was free of the glow. It had to be the source of the barrier.
I stared at the dial. Five concentric circles carved out of bone and inlaid with a metal the color of rose gold. Each of the circles was marked with eight smaller round indentations, spaced at even intervals. The top indentation was dark, the second going clockwise was mostly dark with a pale rose gold crescent on the right side, the third was half gold, half dark… Phases of the moon.
Five circles, five moons, eight phases each.
Hundreds of thousands of combinations.
Something stirred in my mind. A vision flooded me. I saw a hand with slender fingers and brindled skin reach for an identical dial and manipulate the circles with its red claws, selecting the phases. A vision of a night sky unfolded with five moons of different colors in different phases. A holy cosmic combination, part of a twisted faith and a lynchpin of a sacred ritual known only to the initiated.
The vision faded. I had the key now, but not the explanation. Who left the dial barrier here, what was behind it, and most importantly, should I open it?
Was there something dangerous locked in that hole? It could contain treasure, valuable knowledge, or some kind of eldritch horror that would disintegrate us.
I could just keep walking.
I searched my mind for anything else, any other knowledge relating to the barrier or its originator. I found nothing.
This was so frustrating. I knew there was more there, hidden in that glowing gem that somehow lived inside of me, but I just couldn’t access it. It showed me glimpses and only when it wanted to.
I stared at the dial. I had to know. If I walked away now, the barrier would eat at me until I doubled back and opened it. It would be a waste of time and effort. And if I walked away, there was no telling if I would ever get the chance to return.
I reached for the dial and turned the top circle. The first moon in the waxing gibbous, the second in a waning crescent, the third full, the fourth in a third quarter, and the last a dark new moon. The five moon irregular pentagon.
The circles of the dial slid spinning on their own. The opening flashed with green, and the dial clattered to the ground. The way was open.

happy Friday BDH
Thanks for the instalment IA
Amazing as usual, thank you authorlords!
+1
Woo hoo! Thank you.
top 10?
Ada’s dilemma is truly a Gordian knot, fortunately Elias is a Blade Warden! Top ten?
On the one hand, she could be right and it would be just like the government to suppress this information and threaten others into compliance.
On the other hand, our girl is overwrought, paranoid and expecting the worst of everything and everyone.
She’s spent god knows how long wandering the dungeon with no one to talk her out of her paranoia. She’s being hunted, she was betrayed, she’s had her trauma of abandonment dredged up. She hasn’t had a proper meal or sleep in ages.
She’s not exactly an example of calm and rational thinking right now.
Not that I’d outright go blabbing everything to the government without consideration, but it might be worth coming up with a reasonable story.
Like “weird aliens killed each other, I took a sword off the corpse of one which works a bit like magic. My dog ate some stalkers when I wasn’t watching and grew a bit. She protected me while I walked out. Anyway, let me tell you what I saw while I was in there, it was wild…”
No need to mention the herders. She might not have gone past them. She was lost and that place is a maze. /shrug
With the right earnestness and maybe a well timed refusal to talk to anyone below head honcho level (“I didn’t want to spread this around, it seemed like the kind of information that might be best kept restricted”). She might be able to get out relatively ok.
After all, we know she’s one of the best assessors the government has and that they’re extremely valuable. It would be a stupid move to alienate her if she seems trusting and loyal to the government and likely to keep her mouth shut.
Most likely Ethan will help out but I do think she could finagle her way out of the situation herself. It just needs a little cunning and some understanding of her handlers.
Which would go much better if she gets a few hours to recuperate before she faces them.
I like this theory. Beats mine that she needs to fake her death. 🤣
I believe there is another solution to her problem, one completely different way and for now only HA now about it 🙂
If there are another who encountered alien civilization, maybe the goverment is running super secret program with them. It may be the way to understand the gates.
OR the innkeepers come to her to let her know that they will keep her safe. Long long time in the distant future from our current Innkeeper timeline.
The Inns are working with the government now because although the Inns are still safeguarded and unknown to the general populace the portals are obviously not! We know/guess that the Lees came from whatever portal/world she is on right now. so i’m leaning into future innkeepers being part of this!
Love this theory of innkeepers! Oooo! And we could get more stories this way!!!!! Squeee! Always looking for more ways to encourage HA to write more books. Hah!
That sounds great. Definitly way to go.
@Hannah: Except, if the higher-ups already know and have suppressed the knowledge, they might also know that assessors are most likely to make the discovery; and her evasion could raise their suspicions. They may already have ways to break through such evasions, but any suspicions could have unfortunate consequences. Lots for us to ponder until Friday!
Ugh! Lots to ponder until MONDAY. Ada is not the only person with a time-awareness challenge.
Why would assessors be any more likely? After all, Ada didn’t necessarily get her powers because she’s an assessor, she was just kind to a dying alien….
Although I have a theory that she might not have been an alien. She might have been a human lost in a breach who managed to find a way out to a different world and then changed along the way.
The aim is to not seem like she’s evading by being very forthcoming with information. After all, there’s a lot she can tell them.
@Hannah
I do wonder if there is something about Ada being an Assessor that made her a candidate for the inheritance.
With the except of her combat skills, strength, speed, new knowledge, and her regeneration, she has not used any skills that wouldn’t fall into the category of Assessor.
Even with this, the only thing that is outside of the norm of talents is her new knowledge.
For me, it seems that the inheritance unlocked her talent and made her combat ready.
There isn’t a lot known about Ada’s talent or other assessors. I suspect that they are being used in a limited capacity…and because of how their roles have been limited and is controlled, they are likely not in positions to stretch their Talent in new ways.
Being able to tell if the person or group you are meeting is friend or foe, can help or not, would be invaluable to Sadrin (if we are right on their higher purpose)…or, to a diplomat.
I found it suspicious that during the attack at the mining site, Ada was fully surrounded, but was unharmed. She was either protected by the Sadrin or ignored by the gray robes…until the end of the fight.
Also, outside of her speed and combat skills, we don’t know what abilities the Sadrin had. For now, she sounds like a top tier combat talent.
So, my musings are…
Would the inheritance be the same for all who received it? Meaning if a combat talent received, it just enhanced them further…and shared the knowledge of other species, etc?
Is Sadrin someone like an Assessor who sees the value in organic and inorganic material and used that knowledge for diplomacy amongst species?
I’m leaning more towards the latter.
I hope we find out soon.
I, too, think it was her kindness that led to her receiving the gem.
Because anyone who possessed the gem would be almost unstoppable.
So if you currently had the gem, were dying, and wanted to pass it on, you wouldn’t just give it to some random stranger, or anyone who has shown unkind/evil tendencies.
No, you’d give it to someone who is just as, if not, kinder than yourself, so that the power is not abused.
The problem here is that she might be able to hide her own powers, but not Bear. And I don’t want them to take Ada’s dog and do experiments on her or (horrible people) kill her and do a necropsy because, “probably dangerous.” I also don’t want her to abandon Bear in the rift to “save her” from that fate.
Bear belongs to Cold Chaos. And Elias counted Bear as one of his people. Unless Cold Chaos tells the government that Bear is different they may not realize it
Well said. I was not liking the way Ada is digging that paranoia hole deeper and deeper. I hate watching otherwise intelligent and rational people spiral. She took the worst possible outcome and ran with it in the face of zero evidence. It’s going to lead to stupid misunderstandings when Elias and crew finally catch up with her. I’m hoping that Bear goes straight to Elias and her acceptance buys some time for explanations.
But if Elias finds her and immediately says “dont worry, i’ve got your kids” you KNOW there is going to be some fireworks.
Also, why would the govt necessarily know anything? Aside from Ada/assessors its all contractors in there. No need to ascribe more knowledge/competence to the govt than to any other group of people. And contractor groups might not have the incentives to tell the govt of anything weird they come across.
And maybe this rift is just different and nobody’s seen anything like this yet. There is always a first time for everything.
I can’t wait to find out which way this goes.
Is it really paranoia if it’s a life-long pattern, though? 🙂
Would we call trust issues out only to turn and say “Well, she should have known not to behave in x/y/z way, what did she expect?” when things go wrong. As a society, we have our own pattern of judgement, especially when it comes to women who behave in the way they were conditioned to behave by family, spouses, colleagues etc. Damned if they do, damned if they don’t.
I love that Ada is calling that into discussion. How many betrayals and abandonments is enough betrayals and abandonments for her to start thinking she can only rely on herself, prepare for the worse, and if she’s pushed at the end of her rope, think the only choice she has is to climb out and use that rope to hang those who put her in the hole to begin with?
“the only choice she has is to climb out and use that rope to hang those who put her in the hole to begin with”
Nasty. I like it!
Whatever Ada decides, Bear must be protected. In Bear’s current state, I am very concerned about her falling into unfriendly hands– governmental or otherwise. But I trust our authors to find a way to keep her safe!
Ada is simply ruthlessly pragmatic. My own personally philosophy is that I would rather have my surprises be pleasant ones.
Great analyst. 👍🏻
Well it’s looking like a good thing Elias has her children instead of the government…
I was thinking the same thing. And maybe he could help her figure out a plausible story to tell the government.
He does owe her. He didn’t order what happened, but it was his people.
And he has ethics, which are in short supply between London, Melissa, and likely the DDC.
But Ada doesn’t know 🙂
More, please!
Thank you!
Can’t wait to see what’s inside on Monday! Fingers crossed
+1
+2! So excited!
Monday will flip to show the healer finally arrives and they’re gearing up to come inside.
Will London refuse to go inside with them? Will they go to recover the miners bodies 1st? Seems likely as they’re closer and at a known location. Will they want to collapse those other tunnels and have a new mining operation start since they now know there’s a large amount very valuable ore there? Then of course you have alien bodies, humanoid on the scene. Plus missing is 1 assessor and a K9.
I would also be interested in seeing how the kids are doing. And if they are going to find a way to sneak onto the team going after their mom. The daughter at least seemed to show some spirit (and sneakiness) in the short introduction to her.
I doubt they’re going to offer London a spot on the team going in
Elias is extremely dubious about the story London told and basically doesn’t trust him worth a damn
👍 I wouldn’t take anyone I didn’t trust with me!
Exactly. London richly deserves to be sent into the Rift (preferably alone), but no one else involved deserves to have him on their team.
Yay! Friday…
Oh no, another cliffhanger :D. Happy Midsummer to everybody who celebrates!
Happy Midsummer!
If this story is a roller coaster, this snippet is an incline slowly climbing to the next drop-off.
Absolutely wonderful and absorbing.
wow – when you think we are heading to the end of the story, – HA throws in a new thing – to puzzle out for Ada and us – how do they want to finish this in a few sequences like 3 more chapters 3-8 posts … how are we going to unravel all the mysteries in just one book from here?
LOL. I know, right?
Yeah – more twists than an alien moon dial! 😉
Nice!
at a minimum it would seem like we are headed towards a full length book! Of course HA are masters at making us think things are going to point A and instead ending up at Q (which is part off the reason we love their books so much!)
oOOH soo good!
Thank you very much, have a great weekend
The way was open
. . . and we walked into the weekend, waiting patiently and chalantly for Monday’s installment.
Definitely NOT like sugar-high toddlers wanting MORE. NOW. Nope, not us. Just all the fluffiness.
Complete agree. However, may I make another salient point: IS IT HERE YEEEEEEEEEEEET?!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
+10000!!
Mod. R makes it clear once again: she IS one of us! How else would she b such an excellent BDH herder? She gets us. Thanks Mod. R!
And thanks to HA for another excellent chunk of Inheritance!
Loud, squeeeing fluffiness. But fluffy! And chalant.
And another salient point: the ONLY time we look forward to Mondays.
You are the only people who make me wish it was Monday. I need more….. but thanks for that, I’ll be thinking of it all weekend.
Excellent! Loving this!
I’m trying to imagine how this will all get wrapped up in a few more instalments and be left as a stand-alone… Ada raises some good points about the government having to be aware of something more going on with the gates and the risks to her if she pops out with special powers and suppressed intel. My Horde brain feels very strongly this could be an opening for a series to answer this and other questions! Also to keep shipping Ada and Elias, lol 😂
Please please please! An inheritance series would be so cool! I want mooore – already dreading the final installment! Also, very much hoping for a lot more chapters for Ada and Elias content!
I know. There isn’t really time for romance lol. Just the love of a good dog! But maybe that’s all a woman needs. Also, in all the fluffiness of a relaxed space chicken on his perch, this world and all the implications are way too interesting for a one and done!!
Here’s a wild theory!
The government is cool with everything that she’s done, she walks back into work and thus cannot have a relationship with Elias. She goes home with the animals (including human ones) and has a nice long sleep. Then a holiday. Then she goes back to work.
No romance. Just a woman and her kids and some strange alien tech/memories.
I know, I know, but it would be a total curve ball, wouldn’t it? Look at the horde, we’re all shipping two people who haven’t even met yet! 😂
(Me included, naturally.)
I like this one!
way too interesting! many more things to sort out!
is this where we find out what Dina’s parents have been doing all these years?
This does feel like there could be some wonderful stories with Ada and Elias in future books 😄 They haven’t even met yet!!! How could it be getting closer to the end ??!!
Author lords , have you got something special up your sleeves 😌😉
It’s sooo frustrating when you know the answer but can’t access it! Thank you HA for another riveting installment. Come on, July! 😉
Thank you for another installment of Bear and friends:-)
Have a great weekend!
I was telling my eldest about this story and I think we have a new member of the BDH 😝
One O Us, One Of Us 😉😉
A new Horde member. The Horde rejoices!
Huzzah!! Another fluffy, chalant member of the Horde! The Horde grows in power!
I’m curious what will happen next. I can’t wait to see Ada and Elias
Uh oh. 🫣 Cliffhanger until Monday. Unless Monday’s read is with the Elias group.
Thank you!
To be continued…😁
I love this so much!
Thanks for the update.
So Ada thinks she needs to hide her newfound powers… How is she going to achieve that? He he he…
What did she open?
Curiosity is driving me.
I am waiting for the book to be published but I want more and so wish the story won’t be a standalone.
Thank you!
I think I’m top 50? yay
Thanks!
This is where I am in the Horde Pack: I saw those moons, and I knew I was about to step into a test of my p@t!*nc*. I tried to w@!t. I reasoned, I bargained, I logic’d, and I failed. Total failure of chalance.
WHAT! What is the hoard she stepped into?! What mystical whodunit has she uncovered?!
I shall sit with my shame until the day which must not be named.
You are not alone in your shame. I feel like that would be a really crowded room. 🤣
oh yes, very crowded room. I will never make it to the first, top 10 or other early responder list. Greedy, book devouring pig that I am, I jump into the installment first, and usually twice before I remember comments….
Thank you!
Wow, I’m so invested in Ada and Bear. Great Story, can’t wait to buy it.
Thank you HA for another great installment. Loved that jump with a 99 lb dog in her arms. She totally stuck the landing.
I also love how she knows she can’t resist knowing what’s inside, so she better check it out. Again, what a change since she first arrived in this breach.
I’ve been stressing about her fate post breach. She has huge secrets in her head. I wonder if Elias could help her fake her death. He already has her kids. They could assume new identities.
Happy Solstice everyone. Hope you all have a great weekend.
Ahhh! Stopping there!… Oh well. on a different note I was thinking about why the Saidin died when ostensibly she didn’t have two. I see two possibilities. One is that her own world has already been destroyed, and she is tired. Ada is young and still has a world to fight for, and the energy to do it.
The less cheerful alternative is that the gray guys had managed to infect her flesh with something. Her arm was bleeding and didn’t heel. Ada has no problem with healing. So she knew she would die, and she passed her power to a being who chose to protect another before herself.
@Finula what a great theory about being infected and needing to pass on the sacred knowledge!
@Finula,
I wonder too about the gray robes. We know that their robes were almost living, hungry things. I wonder if the gray robes were able to still life/health from their kills. If this is the reason they killed the team. To heal wounds incurred during the fight.
And, why when they were losing they turned their attention to Ada during the fight.
I wondered too if the Sadrin was touched by robes. She had on armor that might have protected her, but she was exposed once her arm was severed.
So, many questions. So, many possibilities.
I think the gray critter was going for his last chance to infect another world in the seconds it had left.
It might be an evil fungal whatsit that wants to eat all the knowledge in the universe, or just all the universe. It doesn’t need to be smart on its own if it can use the brain it takes.
That could be it, but I would wonder why they didn’t infect the miners/escort team as opposed to killing them immediately.
If the gray robes ( I assume) weren’t killing people willy-nilly London likely would have waited for people to retreat and anyone who was infected would have likely made it out of the breach.
Or possibly even near-miraculous healing powers need a certain level of …..base energy? …. to work with, and the saidin had bee… pushed past that, and knowing she no longer had the energy needed, passed the … knack of it? along to, as you so brilliantly said, ” …he passed her power to a being who chose to protect another before herself”!
Of course it *is* entirely possible no one else has enough of the pieces to figure this out ….
😲 Amazing, I’m totally hooked 😃
Thank you and Happy Friday all
Thank you! So if we compare where this is, in something like Solo Leveling’s plot progression those of us Anime and Manga fans expect there to be something like 19 more books in this series. Please please make it at least a trilogy.
Omg what next? And to some extent I completely understand Ada’s thinking, especially with regard to the government. But she’s judging everyone in the company on the basis of the bad apple. Granted he’s a really bad apple, and greed certainly seems to be a driving force everywhere, but still. Thank you! Looking forward to the next installment!
Not just one bad apple: her mother and her husband both left her to fend for herself. She has a lifetime of people who should care for her not doing so.
ARGH!!!! I fully intended to be patient and not add to the “book book book” mass of barely sentient horde. I did, I really DID! The stop here, you stopped HERE?!?! you are trying to reduce me to a groveling “book book book” zombie aren’t you?
Argggghhh! Can I buy the book Now? pretty pretty please with a cherry on top? lol. This is such delicious torture lmao I guess this gives me a reason to look forward to Mondays 😆
When is the pre order?
Soon 🙂, very very soon!
But…, its not even on the release schedule yet. Please, please be really, really soon.
Do you think that she’ll be able to keep and reuse that barrier?
“stand alone” sure. right.
i love this. thank you!
I now know how my children felt when we took road trips when they were young. Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Such sweet torture reading this twice a week. I just can’t wait to buy the whole thing!
Oh Thank you!!! I have been refreshing the page religiously, every day!!! I am hooked!!
Thank you for yet. Another satisfying addition. It never occurred to me that Ada would consider that her Guild might be an enemy. Hmmm…
Monday is a long way away.
Ada has been operating under the assumption that the Guild is not on her side ever since Chapter 3, where she explained her reasoning 🙂 https://ilona-andrews.com/blog/the-inheritance-chapter-3-part-1/
… and ultimately, it isn’t “her” guild. She works for the government, she’s kind of “on loan” to the guild like a contractor. I don’t think we heard about any of her interactions with the Cold Chaos guild other than with London, Melissa, etc… the only ones that are alive that she knows are the ones who abandoned her.
If these people that betrayed her are representative of who works there, it doesn’t bode well for her and makes sense that she doesn’t trust them. She may have no other experience with people from this guild, so no other basis for interpretation of how the guild itself could react. With no trusted point of contact, she’s absolutely right to be wary.
Ada also has the right to be wary of the government she works for within the Cold Chaos Guild.
I am finding the name of the guild to be an interesting one throughout the readings. Everything is in chaos on both sides. Ada and Bear. Elias and the rest of the guild. Cold is spot on with London, Melissa, and Malcolm. I don’t know if cold would be better than hot, as in Hot Chaos. Hot Mess Guild would be more like it. 😀
lol
I want a virtual coin fountain where fellow hoarde members can toss in their electric spare change anonymously to show thanks to the authorlords.
Ooo mysterious!!!
Monday can’t get here fast enough.
Thanks
I wanted to say Thank you, thank you, thank you for this serial. It gives me something to look forward to each week
And I thought we were getting close to wrapping this up with a nice bow. Looking forward to future installments. so thankful for the bi-weekly schedule.
Thank You ♥️
Can I have a little bit more, pretty please? Monday never seemed so far from Friday until now..
Must wait, must be patient, must wait, must wait….
What a stopping point! Happy Friday
She isn’t going to get to go home, is she? It’s the only obvious outcome where she keeps her freedom.
However, she wouldn’t get to be with and look after her kids. Which is not an Ada-okay outcome.
She’s not been trying to get back to earth.
She’s not been trying to get home.
She’s been getting back to her kids.
Therefore she will 100% making out of the breach into earth. She will not allow any other outcome.
Whatever comes after, she’ll deal. Because she rocks (and bear has her back!)
I want to play this tale as one of those interactive story video games!
Onward! Thanks, HA. This is really fun!
BTW, Mod R, that reminds me about the answer to your email salutation and closing question…I didn’t have a chance to respond then, but I have a colleague that always ends with Upward! or Onward! or Forward! It could sound sarcastic, but she’s a genuine cheerleader of our team and it works.
Ack!!!!! The way is open!?!?!?! Cliff hanger to end all cliff hangers! Thank you for the pretty chapter! Can’t wait for more!
I smell a book 2. 😄
I said in another post that it would be nice (no push or anything!) to have a new series called The Bear Chronicles with book 1 being The Inheritance. 😀
We just have to be fluffy and chalant in all of this.
Ooooo, The Bear Chronicles! I like it!!
The way was open…. I hope that is a Return of The King reference! Love it ! Thanks
No idea where you are going with that one.. the Gates of Moria? (sp), If I recall there was some nasty critter at the pool by the cliff with the ‘door’ in it, and it had a symbol etched into the door…
“The way is shut. It was made by those of the dead, and the dead keep it. The way is shut.” Spoken by the king of the dead mountain dwellers to Aragorn, Legolas. and Gimli in Return of the King.
Now it is getting scary!!
😱
Potential betrayal by her employer on a grand scale in front of her, a mystery pursuer behind her, and a potential for a multiverse to potentially explore but only if she is not. Worried about losing her children and cat.
The inner danger is a bigger worry than the actual physical challenges!
Changes in herself and the dog she has adopted as her partner which would identify them as ‘other’, which could create conflict and danger from her own people.
How far can she trust the ethics and goals of her own folk, and is she willing to expose others to the hazards she has survived due to the intercession of one she met and tried to help who gifted her with a mystery ball of glowing mystery and knowledge shoved into her head?
She has been betrayed already by a team mate she should have been able to trust, so now the GOALS OF ALL SHE MEETS are in question.
It’s simple when thing just wants to eat you.
This reminds me of that radio show with the screeching door hinge – inner Sanctum – from back in the late 1940’s.
As Hugh would say, “Fun!”
Wonderful
Is Ada now her own Blade Warden??
Okay, I’ve been thinking about this all week and I’m glad to see Ada thinking about plan/options for how she is going to deal with the DDC. It would be totally unfair to her, and especially her kids, for them to have to go into hiding by faking her death. She and the kids have the right to live their lives safe and to express her rad talents.
Ada could say she survived bc she had a new “talent” suddenly emerged and now she is a combat talent. No one seems to know what triggers a talent but combat talents get to be in guilds, therefore be under different rules. It’s pretty bullshit that the government limited Assessors to be strictly employed by government… and I wonder if that is same as other countries?
My fave scenario: Ada should start a new guild for Assessors: they could protect themselves, train future apprentice assessors, get paid their worth (more bullshit that they don’t get a percentage) and they would could make better decisions about how they shld be implemented in the field, like actually train them with survival skills and weapons. Being solely reliant on outside persons for your safety left her hella vulnerable. Personal safety knowledge is self care. Assessor guild should be treated like Healers in status. Off limits and independent.
Other guilds would be in support and help lobby too since in their interest for assessor talent to be part of free market AND Elias owes her one- he’ll want to try to makeup for what happened with London. He can help by using his political clout plus he can help her setup a guild.
2nd scenario: Government can either cooperate by changing the law and let her start her guild, or she could quit as Assessor and register as combat talent. Then, she could be independent contractor or join a guild, maybe be the Scout for the initial team that maps a new gate…she ends up at Cold Chaos (of course, bc hello book troupe) she keeps them safe by sensing monsters as they locate the anchor and help select the mining routes…just so happens any team she is on, they are the safest and their gates are the most profitable! Mwa hahaha!
Good question about whether other countries have the same rule about assessors. I don’t think that they could. Government rules will vary based on local culture. In some countries they probably refuse to allow any women in combat positions. Others might not allow a woman with children, or a sole supporter.
A Bhuddist country might not give anyone restrictions.
All that being said, governments will always claim dibs on as much as they can get away with. From a stability viewpoint, by controlling both the powerful assessors and the gate assignment, they assure that everyone will play by the rules. They need to have an independent oversight with each mining group anyway, and owning the assessor makes fraud much more difficult to pull off.
From the Elias point of view, you set up rules against situations that encourage dishonorable behavior. So Assessor oversight.
As usual, this chapter was awesome! I will try to be very, very p*tient waiting for Monday, but I can’t promise anything! 😂 Thank you HA, this has truly been one of the highlights of my summer so far!
Thank you, really enjoyed it
Thank you! Everyone have a wonderful weekend, and if in the US don’t melt in the heat
Loved the chapter – I only wish Candice had finished the cover so that she could have illustrated the dial!
Thank you!
Oh man. Cliff hanger Friday.
So my 2cs on government coverup: Disappearing Ada is not realistic. The gate is in full public view, lots of people are there to guard against a break. Whether she exits on her own or with the CC team she will be seen exiting IN GOOD HEALTH. Of course she can be held in custody. In any case if the government wants to prevent her telling things a threat to her kids is so very obviously enough. But Ada is justifiably paranoid for oh so many reasons.
What’s behind the barrier? The cache of the previous blue orb holder? A general cache for breach divers? The home of the previous holder maybe? The controls for the anchor?
My thought is that the item is a supply cache, like are sometimes set along trails in desolate areas.
Another possibility is that it is an official rest stop. The implication was that they belonged to a specific religious group.
It could also be a phone booth, or a teleportal.
I am so sucked into this story – thank you HA!!
I love InBearitance days, even with the cliff hangers! 😘
Hi – I buy my books from Amazon.com, but live in Australia. My pre-order was cancelled today, but I can’t figure out if that’s right? I thought it was just the UK?
UK publisher distributes to Australia. 🙂
UK and Commonwealth 🙂
Is the book ‘this kingdom will not kill me’, this same as the one that’s being posted ‘the inheritance’?
No. These are different titles. One book is called This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me and the other book is called The Inheritance.
This Kingdom will Not Kill Me is the first in the new Maggie the Undying series – it is an isekai fantasy into an epic world of knights and ladies https://ilona-andrews.com/blog/this-kingdom-is-up-for-preorder/
The Inheritance is the current blog serial, a modern action adventure LitRPG , due for release this summer but not currently up for preorder
I have two questions/thoughts:
First, is Ada’s cat, “Mellow”, the same one that hissed at Elias at the beginning of Chapter 7? If so, love the name! Granted everyone is/was stressed out, but still an amusing touch.
Second, I’m wondering if the “twisted faith” in Ada’s memory of the dial is relevant. Since HA choose their words quite precisely, I’m guessing it is. But may not bode well for what’s behind the dial…
Same cat 🙂
A twisted faith, but not too bad because they are friends with the Saidin. Possibly its effects are entirely internal. Perhaps they go on pilgramages.
It occured to me, for Team Very Concerned About Bear, that our girl is going to be in trouble if she bites a human for trying to take her from Ada. She’d take an arm right off. Ada is going to have to work hard on that training. Good thing Bear is a GS!
Looks like that big black hole of deadly potential is chock full of BOOK(s). Yes books, books, books.
I didn’t think Kate could get better until Hugh starting having “fun” but now I am SO hooked on Ada/Bearhole/Elias potential…..Oh, please, there are OBVIOUSLY multiple book adventures here….please. Pleasepleaseplease….
Ooh, a gate! The lady or the tiger? Which will it be? Can’t wait to find out! Thanks for the story.
ohhhhhh so good, need more immediately! hehe.
I can’t preorder TKWNKM on kobo yet, is that to be expected? or is it a kobo Australia issue?
It should be available on Kobo, perhaps the new edition links are taking a bit to populate 🙂
As for the what after concerns, Ada is very pragmatically defensive, and now she has grown a backbone. She knows there will be trouble, but she also has lines that she won’t cross. She won’t give up the dog or the bracer, she won’t disclose more than she needs to the government. Protecting her kids is the number one priority.
Ok, the way you avoid governmental machinations is with powerful backers and a lethal legal team. So the path forward is: Trust Elias, accept the full support of Cold Chaos in maintaining her personal sovereignty. In exchange, she allies with them. They have the ability to get her and her kids out of the country if the government acts poorly. They will settle for terms rather than lose her to another country. If then persist in being stupid, she relocates to a nuetral country and does abroad good will work for Cold Chaos. This gives her large international support, and the US will be known as the a***oles who banished the most talented person in the world.
Thank you💕
The New Moon strongly objects to the diagram of moon phases. It is being discriminated against! It even has its picture right there, but where is the name?
The Cult of the New Moon demands REVENGE…
Interesting. Sophisticated tech in a breach.
I loved someone else’s theory about this somehow being linked to Innkeepers world. So it got me thinking….The alien attackers of the original Sadrin had garments that were infected – which Ada knew to avoid touching based on her talent. The aliens garments acted much like the corrupted innkeeper Michael’ innkeeper robe (Sweep of the Heart chpt 28) where it changed color from black to gray and seemed to have its own sentience melting and flowing- much like the aliens garments do too in this world. Also, we know that the corrupted innkeepers are infected and they are trying to kill Inns (which are living portals to different worlds). Also, in chapter 6 part 3 of inheritance the cave art describes creatures much like the Lees from Innkeepers world. Ada saw cave art depicting some kind of beings, resembling raccoons or foxes. “A caravan of fluffy creatures departing, some being wrapped in rags begging on the street, and a feeling of alarm. Not deadly danger exactly but ruin. Financial ruin.” Financial ruin definitely would be a Lees tragic woe.
This would be way cool if there is some kind of link- even if HA did not intend this…. The Inheritance would be some time in the future from Sweep of the Heart because of course the general public does not know of the alien worlds during Sweep of the Heart…. Maybe the breaches are a result of the corrupted ad-Hal’s trying to get rid of whatever creates the Inns magic.
That Inn corruption had to come from somewhere originally.
I’d have to open it to. To be shown that knowledge and not use it …. Nope, gotta do it.
I hate to admit it ..this scene made me sad. Yes, I am entirely too invested in this world. I don’t want it to end and I don’t want it to be over….But, I do want the book now and next in series later. Summer, summer….
I know that the intention was put out there that this was a standalone..but, how standalone, when not standalone shaped?
Ada’s musings makes me wonder if she is going to give back the inheritance after all. I’m hoping there is some other way to hide any changes she has gone through, her bracer, and the scar from the Sindrin. From what we know of the story so far, it’s unclear if there are truly any detectable changes…I think likely not.
While her concerns are rational, I hope that she is suffering from “suspect everything and everyone, until they prove trustworthy” and not that the DDC will be out to get her. I will have to go back and read what Elias knows about these humanoid beings and/or if there has been any hint. Assault teams would have to have some knowledge of encounters and so far everyone seems to have been caught off guard. 10 yrs and thousands of breaches…it does seem like it should be unlikely unless this breach is different from the others encountered so far.
If she does give back the inheritance I do hope one of the new additional scenes…is a welcome to Sadrin’s after she gets home with her own welcome packet.
Also, the shortness of this scene and the implications of it…cruel and intriguing.
With this level of cruelty , I would expect to see a small throw away line that Elias has a whole wife at home. 😭😭
Hopefully, I will have more control this time and around and won’t spend the entire week submitting new posts… but, Lawd…this is hard.
“Logically he understood that of itself, his lack of awareness was precisely the problem. He should have paid better attention. He should have done more. But it was too late. The two people he loved most had been dead for a decade. ”
::hug:: It will be okay.
I needed that. ❤️🥰🤗
Thanks.
I’m sorry for the stupid question, but where is this quote from?
Haha, I feel like HA was addressing our speculation in this chapter, re: Ada’s physical appearance and future job prospects. The one thing they couldn’t address is, ofc, the shipping, since Ada knows nothing about that, poor woman.:-)
Also: funny how an alien portal still flashes green when the input code is accepted. Personally, I would have made it cycle through some weird color combinations, like chartreuse-vermilion-celadon, just to have everyone scratching their heads a bit.:-)
It’s more like we anticipated your questions, because we have written several thousand words ahead. By the time the installment is posted, we are way past it. 🙂
I did think it was amusing just how exactly Ada focused on the same issues raised in the comments last installment. Just a testament to your skill — plant the seeds, trigger the speculation, anticipate the questions, then carry us to the next twist 🙂
But…. Monday….
What has it got in its pocketses?
….
Ooooh!
Arrrgh!! Cliffy! And I have to wait till Monday. Hope Elias can help her and protect her when she gets out.
Oh man, I’ve had the most soul-sucking day and this was the absolute brightest spot in it. Thank you thank you thank you!!
oooh, aaaaah!!!
Cliff hanger! And: Cold Chaos is toast.
As soon as I read she expected CC to unalive her, I heard “This goes ALL the way to the top!” in my head, in Leon’s voice. heh.
PS: I love how the BDH is now shipping an InnKeeper crossover 😄
I mean, Ada now literally has a Hidden Legacy 😉
😂🤪 perfect title for Book 2 lol. I wish! Obsessed and yes, ship me ALL the books!!!! I hope the authors don’t feel serious pressure from my end. I’m just loving the horde analysis and ideas generated and doing what readers do…
I think 2025 really needs a strong pragmatic heroine and her loyal dog. Also, simply for the sake of the acronym, I suggest Elias reforms his guild around Ada and Bear. It can be know as ABC – Ada Bear Cold Chaos.
where do the summoners get their monsters?
Maybe Zeus (wasn’t that the tentacle tiger the animal mage makes a connection with) came from the breach.
An Innkeepers AND Hidden Legacy crossover!!! It just keeps getting better! The multiverse!!!
I think Ada“s problem has an obvious solution: Elias will offer her a new identity and a new job.
Ada has two kids who are her world. Their well being is very important to her. New identities, relocation, and losing friends could be a deal breaker.
The guilds enter the breaches, not the government. If anyone knows about sentinent beings its them, i.e. the assault teams. And quite likely Elias knows.
Maybe there ist a very good reason for the secrecy and Ada will just be included in the group thats responsible.
+1
Unless this breach is totally unique (possible but not probable) Elias has encountered sentient sapient beings. He’s been going all the way to the anchors, spending more time in the most dangerous/powerful beaches as a top Talent in a top Guild.
The government initially worked the breaches exclusively before outsourcing to the guilds. I can’t imagine that all of the guilds and their members are keeping such a secret or are all honorable enough to not try to exploit it.
I’ve reread entirely to many times and I’m trying to wait before doing a full reread again…but, from Elias’s scenes…it does seem that he and Leo are unaware of any humanoid combatants. Early in the serial Ada expresses the following:
“None of my briefings had ever mentioned a being that appeared this human. Animals, monsters, inhuman sentients with strange anatomy, vaguely humanoid beings, yes. But never this.”
There is some knowledge of inhuman sentients and humanoid beings, so there have been encounters in the breaches before. We just don’t know the nature of them.
It is likely that in exploring the breaches and following the sense of the anchor, assault teams have been able to avoid encounters with civilizations. They could go out of their way to do so. Either because they are unaware of their technological or combat advantages…and, they can’t communicate with them.
I still think there is likely some information that the assault teams could have access to that is not being shared with DeBras, who are inside the breaches for a limited amount of time.
I do hope that with Ada’s newly enhanced talent she will be able to see if sharing her new information will be valuable or dangerous. As long as they don’t light up purple, she may have some insight on how to proceed.
You make good points, especially about rumors getting out.
London seemed surprised and he’s been on assault teams.
The two times Elias is told about the red level humanoids combatants (by Leo then London) he doesn’t show a strong reaction. Granted, he is the master of “Hmm.”
But there was no WTF?! or surprise or deep curiosity. He wondered if they were protecting the Adamanite. He didn’t wonder about their existence. I interpreted his response/reaction to mean this wasn’t new news to him.
I guess Elias’s reaction could also be disbelief. He thinks London is a lying coaward. “Something” killed the assault team.
@Emily,
Love that “master of hmmm”..😂🤣😂
London is part of my reasoning definitely. He seemed truly surprised and caught off guard.
You are right that Elias’s reaction could go either way.
I just wonder if there is something different about this breach vs the others that have been opened previously.
Ah. Cliff hanger. Now on Monday will we switch back to Elias et al attempting to enter the breach. Or actually entering. Then next Friday back again ping pong to Ada and her adventure down Alice in Wonderland’s hole/cave dark tunnel.. whatever to find…whatever?. No matter what, there will be..Be dark. Lot of dark 🙂 As for action – Ada chooses to know something. She could have by passed and gone straight on for the anchor and did not. And what about the personage following her??
Ada has just accessed the Forbidden Gate to enter the Hoard of All Truth, where she will at last discover the answer to the Ultimate Secret …. “How DID they get the caramel into the Caramilk Bar???”
(Okay, so I am dating myself badly. Does anyone else remember that lengthy series of candy ads that ran on TV back in the 1980s?)
Ha, I remember, this made me laugh!
🤣 Yes!
OMG! 😆 Yes!
My expectation is that she’ll meet more “family” in the space behind the door. She has probably been followed by them to this point. What will they make of their new sister? Will they let her return home? Am I even on the right path? Inquiring minds want to know!
thank you ✨
Fascinating! Thanks, HA!
The only reason I ever want Monday to come faster!
Whee thanks
So, as of Monday (I think) it was 4 – 10 installments left. So that puts us at 9 installments (if you use the highest number) left. I just went back and checked, it mostly seems to be one chapter for two installments. So approximately 4.5 chapters left. Since this installment was a bit cliffhangery (sue me, the word fits) the cruel (in the nicest possible meaning of that word) authors will give us the Elias pov this Monday. That would probably finish this chapter. Using my previous assumptions that gives us 8 installments, or four chapters to conclude the story. I’m trying to decide if that’s even possible. Especially with this newest cliffhangery wrinkle with the locked room, I can see that adding on at least a chapter’s worth of complications right there. Then there’s the whole arc that Ada’s justly paranoid assumptions that will need to be addressed. The mysterious follower. The meeting between Ada and Elias, have I missed anything? I guess there’s a good chance that some of those things can combine in interesting ways, but still. So the math doesn’t seem to math when you combine the literary requirements, and the assumptions as I’ve laid them out. Well, we all know what they say about assumptions, so imma just going to go with a wild ass guess and say the 9 more installment number is PROBABLY not a hard or fast number to use.,Which doesn’t upset me. As a matter of fact, I’m thrilled. Or I can be completely off, and the whole thing will be finished off with a stunning and surprising twist that will tie all the different parts of the story up with a neat bow, in just four more chapters. Only our kindly authors know for sure. Aught! The suspense is going to kill me. I had to go back and correct my numbers as I got them mixed up, but they are saying want I want them to say. (I’m easily confused, and math and I are not on a first name basis)
Aughh* stupid autocorrect! (it did it to me AGAIN [aught] when I entered it just now) What the hell was wrong with spell check anyway? It was a perfectly suitable tool that underlined a word that it thought was wrong and allowed ME to decide what I wanted to put down. Stupid programmers that need to come up with something new on a too regular basis to justify their lordly salaries)
You thought Autocorrect was bad compared to Spellchecker. Just wait until you meet … AI Auto Editor!
This wonderful new writing program will read your entire paragraph, decide what you really *meant* to say, and substitute its Improved Version (TM) for your entire post. And it will do this automatically AFTER you hit the “Post” button so you have no ability to counteract it…
Wheew. For a second there I thought you were being serious. Well, I wouldn’t be surprised if they DO come up with something like that. After all it follows perfectly with the progression of spell check to autocorrect, to…
I usually go back and re in read things to be sure I’m not being second guessed (and sometimes find things that both of us missed) but I get in a hurry at times and get ambushed. This isn’t a problem when you’re making a comment on YouTube, the edit button is a useful tool there. But, when you post here you better be sure you’re all in before you press the submit button.
Soo exciting, Thank you for this series.
Thank you for another chapter. I can’t wait to pre order! I hope this has been fun to write. it’s obvious you’ve put a lot of thought and effort into it.
I’m curious to know if the”Inheritance” gem has any memories of humans or earth.
I agree the DDC must have hidden a lot of information.
If she’s going to be less than entirely forthcoming with the DDC about everything that happened (a position I 100% support as noted in comments on the prior post) I wonder what all her medical tests will show. Hearing how closely she’s monitored was one of the scariest parts of the book so far.
I am hoping Mellow is mellow about Bear. Another great name.
Great instalment! Love how it ends right after Ada does the Breach equivalent of pushing the Big Red Button and before we get to see if the result is a loud bang, a Congratulations You Won! banner, or a loud ticking as a countdown timer starts…
Hopefully she can blame it all on stalker meat, the new superfood!!!
Coming soon to a grocery store meat counter near you!
Aaaaaaaaaaaagghhhhhhhhhhhh ……….
First?
Just kidding!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣
I come, I read, I get to the end, I think to myself, nooooooooo! Only time I think can’t wait until Monday. *sigh*
When is the guesstimated book release? And who has the time travel machine and willing to share with the rest of us? I’d say asking for a friend, but def would be a lie.
Thanks for the perfect treat for the weekend! Can’t wait to see what’s next.
ooooooo…. curiosity. amazing snippet! tyvm!
Boskie 🙂
Oh no, I want to continue reading!😱
Is there a passageway? A weapon, or a control chamber?
I also think, she should Not Tell somebody about the inheritence.
But perhaps she could tell that her talent developped, because of the long stay in the breach.
I don’t know if any other commentator raised this point. I should be polite and check, but as I write this there are almost 200 comments (probably be more before I hit “post”) and I am on vacation after all.
In the days of my youth (my 79th birthday is coming up) I was addicted to the stories of Robert E. Howard, author of the tales Conan. Kull the Conqueror, Solomon Kane, Bran Mak Morn, and others. Howard is supposed to have written that it is important to make one’s hero a bit stupid, of he wouldn’t get into the sort of situations worth writing about. One of the things I admire do much about House Andrews fiction is that heroes (Curran, Derek, Sean, Mad Rogan) and heroines (Kate, Julie, the Baylor sisters, Dina) are not stupid, and they do think ahead and assess alternatives. Adventures happen to them anyway, but not because they’re so reliant on their abilities that they stumble into high risk situations.
I love it.
Agreed. Too Stupid To Live is not a hero/heroine quality I have much empathy for.
I really liked the scene in Sapphire Flames when Runa was called by her treacherous financial adviser and told she had to come meet him late at night in his office to review some “important and urgent papers”. And Leon conducted the Baylor Symphony in a chorus of “NO!” And then Catalina went instead –with heavy-duty backup.
Time to reread… 🙂
My 78th just went by, and I have to agree … intelligent, thoughtful, insightful main characters are far more interesting and relatable, and their analysis of the situations are far more complex and nuanced. And much more fun to read.
Something that caught my eye on the re-read was the phrase “holy cosmic combination” in reference to the moon dial thingy. Is that a coincidence or a deliberate callback to the vampires and their Holy Cosmic Anocracy?
Innkeeper references dropping left and right, here.
I’m so enjoying this! Thank you.
thank you!!
Love this. Love all the theories. Love HA. It is allllll good.
so good
What a cliffhanger! What will ADA find on the other side?
Ada will have to make some decisions. Have the big wigs been hiding the fact there are other sentient beings? Will she be able to hide the fact she’s different? Bear won’t.
I’m enjoying this so much! Thank you!
Interesting!!!
So much fun to read. Thank you.
Mod. R if this is not allowed, just delete, but I saw Book Goblin having an ereader issue I think all of the BDH will relate to. Warning! Book Goblin does not do Fluffy or Chalant.
https://youtube.com/shorts/ApqKmTn5b1s?si=7quWlsXvrHK5tCRh
I have a feeling I know which book the Book Goblin was reading. 🙂
I love this. I don’t know why book goblin amuses me so, but she really really does. My favorite lines: the incoherent growl at the beginning and the ‘Oh no.’ At the end. Possibly book goblin resembles my young nephew when he needs help w the iPad? Or possibly that we all have an inner book goblin? Must find more book goblin to pass the time until Monday…
Am I the only one overly stressed about imaginary children waiting to hear if their Mom is really dead, and what the hell are they supposed to do etc, I’m ready to hit the get me off this ride button. and climb down the roller coaster framework and get to the kids. Yes , Yes I do read the end first when it gets out of control.
remember out current gov is short handed..they may not miss her for at least a full pay period (i.e. missing time card).
That is so true. Especially since Cold Chaos is trying to keep the catastrophe of losing the miners and the assault team quiet.
Uuuuu ahhhhhh
What is inside ?
The lady?
Or the Tiger ?
Loving this, thank you!
The Inheritance is SO GOOD. Thank you again for writing and sharing this story – and for creating an awesome, resourceful, creative, badass survivor of a protagonist who isn’t in her twenties.
She is my age. (This almost never happens in sci-fi and urban fantasy I read. ) 40 ain’t so bad, to be honest. I’m kinda loving my life at 40 with a career and a dog.
At 40 you know very clearly who you are and what/who matters most to you, what you are willing and not willing to do or to tolerate from others. At 40 you still fight to survive and get back to your family just as much as in your 30s or 20s; it just might look different, logistically, with more rest breaks, patience, and careful pacing/planning.
I love seeing this heroine “level up” and gain new strengths and abilities, rather than be held back by her age and humanity. I’m invested in seeing where her story (and her dog’s) goes next.
(Admittedly, I’m kinda-lowkey-hoping it’s love at first sight between Adaline Moore and the guildmaster/fighter guy, because they emanate “potential power couple” vibes. He’s already protecting her children from threats, or at least seems to be, and he says he hates politics/ corruption/ greed.)
Oh, my oh my! More Will Be Revealed is happening, eh? Love it!
OMG, the issues keep piling on, and I love how this keeps expanding. House Andrews, I adore your minds!!! I love floating along on these intricate, exquisite stories that pour from your creative flow! Exquisite, exquisite … this reads like it could go on forever, which would be absolutely delightful. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I really really like that worldbuilding
And I like the comments and all the speculations as well.
Maybe Ada will find the door to all the Doors. I mean 1 anchor 1 breach but the breaches are similar; same environment (air etc), same monsters. There must be a connecting point. And its not just 1 breach at a time but several.
And it seems to me, as if the breaches are a world of their own, not only a connection to other worlds, maybe like that Baha-char world in innkeeper series.
Maybe the alien woman, a sadrin, is a sort of police or arbitrator.
And maybe it is all quite different.
Can’t wait to read next chapters. Monday obviously is too far away.
Pre-order when? Pre-order when???? Pleaseeeeee??🙏🙏
Interesting it will be fun to find out what is behind the barrier. Thank you for the part. I hope your weekend is going well.
amazing story.
Aaah. I want the next installment now! Of course, I also want the next Innkeeper Book, the next entry on the Wilmington years, the next Ryder book, and a new entry in the Hidden Legacy series right now. It is possible I’m not entirely reasonable.
Also, thank you for this and the other series. They’re high points!
Thank you. Needed that. The BDH is great. So many ideas. It’s getting hard for me to hold on til the next. So exciting and I can sense the ending coming. Hope you are ok Gordon. Hang in there HA.
I’d love it if she & Bear just walked through the gate, into her living room and hugged her kids.
Is anyone else superficially reminded of the old Syfy TV series Stargate SG-1? 🤔
I love how much world building you have rendered with so little text! This is reminding me, in the best possible way, of the Andre Norton books I read as a girl which often included mention of “forerunner” societies, and the acquisition of skills through psychic communication with those predecessors.
Also thank you Mod R and Author Overlords for your nurture of the whole BDH community. The escape into the story worlds and sense of connection is a great gift. I feel like I should encourage you to remember that you are providing good things for for us and caution you not to take on too much of our individual burdens. But you are smart people and you already know this. 😘
Does that make us old?
Yes! She’s on a forerunner foray!
Came here to say exactly this.
Thank you Ilona and ModR for holding space for us! Please continue to care for yourselves as well!
So very grateful for you both and the Horde community for being a safe place here in the web sphere!
Sending peace, healing and safety to you all!
Thank you Mod R for all you do for us.
Mod R are you okay? I have to ask in light of the Author post today! I mean, I had not a clue how badly people were stressing out on this… Yikes. The posts must be more frantic than usual. Thank the author lords for saying it will be okay, maybe BDH members unusually stressed out can now stand down and relax. Hugs to them and the author lords for dealing, too.
🙂 All is well.
The world is a very stressful and anxious place right now, and the Horde is investing some of that anxiety in the fictional escape of the Inheritance. Which was the goal!
We can experience and vent our feelings safely through narrative tension and walk away unscathed and hopefully fortified. I’m with you on those barricades!
Thanks HA, this is such a great story!
I know it will be okay–that is one of the reasons I love your books. I am fine with conflict and loss and whatever needs to happen in the story, but i know it will all be okay in the end. Thank you for that.
So exciting! How they are going to wrap this up, I do not know but I will enjoy seeing it when it is available!
I love that we are given fixes on Mondays and Fridays but…. this BDH’r is thinking wouldn’t it be nice if we had a Wednesday fix to hold us until Friday?
Shouldn’t it be that way?
We are chalant, chalant, chalant… But…. (rubbing my hands together) soooo long from Monday to Friday…. Wednesday, Wednesday, Wednesday!!!!
LOVE LOVE this, please release book asap!
I’m loving this serial so much! It reminds me of adventure books I loved as a child like “Hatchet” but with an adult, scifi twist. It’s so fun! Thank you!
