My husband ordered some NHL face masks so he can go out in public in style. He figures he should be fashionable when adventuring to the grocery store.

As in actual hockey masks, or cloth masks with an NHL logo on it? I don’t think an actual hockey mask will protect from the virus that well, although it would probably help if he gets into a scuffle over the last pound of ground beef.

Good luck on the errand hopefully you are successful.
Over the weekend we were allowed to go to my daughter’s school to empty out her school apartment. I realized it was the first time I had driven in about 6 weeks. It felt weird to be out and about not in our neighborhood. It also felt very deserted for San Francisco. We did have to sign up for a time slot so that there weren’t too many there at the same time.

It is a sad commentary on our times that leaving the house can cause such angst and driving the car can seems strange. Let us hope this is not the new normal. Those who enjoy change should be overjoyed. Waiting for Ryder is a welcome respite.

I’m kind of lost on why anyone would obsess over the next Ryder scene. It’s not a scheduled book that has to go to press on any certain date. It’s just a good story being told well by two writers who can’t deal well with downtime and need to write something that’s on their minds. You owe us nothing. I mean, sure, we’re going to read and consider and try to figure out where it’s going, but it’s kind of like children watching cookies get made. They’re done when they’re done, and obsessing on it doesn’t hurry the process by one second. I am personally waiting for Kate to find out what Julie’s up to. I’m looking forward to some fireworks.
Err…I mean… just write it when you’re home without any baking to do. We’ll wait and enjoy it whenever it’s posted. The only thing good about going out when you have to during a pandemic is the lack of traffic. You may actually be able to hit the speed limits on the highways. That’s always a good kick in Texas.

We went to Home Depot yesterday, they are limiting numbers in store, everyone in line being mostly mindful about distance, all wearing masks. All the employees we see are wearing masks… except one older lady. Maybe mid to late 50s. Her mask was down under her chin, and she’s just yapping and not paying attention to social distance at all. I commented that she should pull up her mask as we walked by her to get in. She’s like, “I know, I should. It’s just uncomfortable and I get tired of it.” My comment was, “You won’t be uncomfortable when you’re dead, will you?” Idiots! And today, had to run to grocery store for prescriptions. I can’t even tell you the number of morons wearing a mask, but it’s covering the mouth, and not the nose. Just plain stupid!
Terry says
Maybe they’re mouth-breathers ( sorry, I couldn’t resist ????)
Kelticat says
Not quite as bad as the woman who cut a hole in her mask to help her breathe. And encouraged others to do the same ????♀️.
About the people who have their nose hanging out, it could be that they can’t breathe with a flat mask. A friend of mine found that she couldn’t, but someone from her church made cone masks for her, and now she has no problems.
Lisa M says
I’d say some people probably do have issues with masks that are tight fitting to the face, not just the edges. But from what I saw, that would probably not be the case. I’m going to go with general user stupidity. These are the people who pull the mask off to take a phone call, hold the phone next to their face with no gloves, then put the mask back on like they’ve been so safe and helpful. All while picking up every single piece of produce or whatever with bare hands. ◔_◔
Jenn says
Good LUCK!! I hear there have been people abusing people wearing masks….a woman stalked another woman through a grocery store while berating her saying woman #2 had no right to social distance. I hope nothing like that occurs to you or anyone else.

It’s sad but I have to really prepare myself mentally to go out. It’s always for groceries cause pick up isn’t great around here and no one will deliver this far out. I go on the old lady times which helps but I notice I don’t sleep well the night before I plan to go. Sad times we live in. And with the way most states are handling this, not only are we not going to have a second wave, the first one will just keep coming.
We HAVE to process the lambs. The new lambs are here and the year olds don’t taste as good after they lose their lamb teeth at 12 to 14 months. So sis, who is in stricted quarantine is coming to get the ones I have here and will sleep in the living quarters in my horse trailer in the sheep field. We’ll keep at least 50 feet distance. This is crazy times.

I was able to go on a hike today as NJ opened up the parks again. I skipped the weekend to avoid the mobs and had a nice 2 hour hike with my firstborn, shared only with the occasional trail bike. It was so nice to get out of the 4 walls and into the green again.

Hopefully whatever drove you two out of the house today, everything went fine.
Yes, there are people who follow the social distancing while wearing masks. However, there are more people who think that wearing a mask lets them get closer to other people. That drives me nuts. I would rather have someone keep their distance and not wear a mask. The data are showing social distancing is the best way to not contract the virus. However, the CDC does not have the data to show that wearing masks (cloth, not the N95 ones for medical personnel) does or does not slow down contracting the virus.
Also, be careful wearing gloves. I learned a long time ago with going in an out of surgical rooms is that they can only be worn for a short time and should be taken off. Also, once the gloves are off hands should be washed for 20 seconds. Gloves can have the virus on them longer than other surfaces.
Kara Rogers says
I hope your errands went smoothly! Wear the masks, wash the hands, and don’t hug anybody around the neck, and you should be good to go.

We do a whole “Decontamination Protocol” at our house. We wear a long sleeved shirt or hoodie, jeans, masks, and eyewear with our hair pulled back when we run errands. When we get home, we off-load perishables onto the decontamination table, spray everything liberally with white vinegar, and let it air dry. The vinegar smell is surprisingly brief. (We leave the rest of the purchases in a box in the car/garage for 3+ days, then haul it all inside.) That done, we take turns disrobing and dropping clothes into the hamper by the door and darting barefoot into the shower to wash hair and body. It’s probably overkill, but I’m okay with erring on the side of caution.
*
If our errand is what we consider “light exposure” like buying a meal from the drive through, we kick off our shoes by the door, put the food on plates, dispose of the wrappers immediately, wipe surfaces as the food keeps warm in the oven, wash hands, change clothes, and blow out our hair like we are styling it again since COVID-19 dies at high temperatures and our hair is a surface that we touch and that also gets into our eyes. Then we dine.
*
Going to the store used to be our “Happy Chore”, now it feels like germ warfare. I really miss seeing people’s smiles and look forward to more care free days for everyone on our planet.

Be safe, be well. I had to get an allergy shot this past Monday and I was very happy to see (finally) proper safety mitigation’s in place. All the patients were wearing masks too! Seats spaced appropriately, staff in masks and, where necessary, wearing gloves, hand sanitizer available, and the door propped open so we don’t have to touch it. I did not sit down, nor stay the requisite 30 mins (my husband drove, there are many urgent care centers available en route to my house and I have never had a reaction in all the years I have been doing this). I don’t think one can overdo being careful.

I went to my favorite grocery store on the 4th. The 4th was not with me. I was the only customer I saw wearing a mask. Workers mostly had them on, but the teen gathering carts in the parking lot had no mask and no gloves, handled all the carts, anyway. Some workers used bare hands to pull down their masks to talk to people. One had the mask only over her mouth. People think that because things are opening again in Ohio, they are all safe, which is likely why we have had something close to 9 new cases confirmed in this county in the past week when we had a total of 12 until they said things were going to open again. One man stood and told the cashier — several times — “We know who you are, we know where you live, and it’s not Halloween, so take off the mask!” He also sort of stood so close to her that I wondered if he was going to rip the mask off her face himself. I was kind of hoping he’d say that to me so I could tell him to f*k off. Alas, he did not. A sign said only 90 people were allowed to be in the store, but nobody was counting.
I can’t believe the run on Campbell’s soup! It makes me wonder if people don’t know how to cook and have to just heat and eat something. Empty shelves in a lot of places, shelves so full they were crammed together in others. It’s been a while since I was at a grocery store, but I’ll have to go out again today because I need pet food. I also need facial tissues for allergy season being upon us. Geez.
Fortunately, I have 3 face masks, so I will wear a clean one today when I go out. I am amused that people take off the masks and put them back on when they get to a different place, never realizing that if someone in the last store they were in was spreading the virus around, they have touched it on that mask and are taking it into a different place. The whole situation is getting ridiculous. I have backed away from more people than I can count because store aisles are not 6 feet wide and nobody can wait until they’re empty to walk into them. I’m not paranoid about it, but I am in the age bracket where the “at risk” population lives, and I have animals to care for, so I need to be alive and healthy. I’ve always had a dislike of strangers touching me, anyway, but in this mess, it’s becoming almost an obsession to avoid it. *bonus* I heard that face masks can help keep pollen out of your face. If wearing a mask lets me walk outside, at least I won’t feel odd wearing it.
I hope that your trip was better than mine, because if I hadn’t had to stay away from people to stay healthy, I’d have likely slapped a few.
Donna A says
My assumption for Campbells condensed soups is for their use in recipes. We’ve been told it’s “unavailable” in all of our deliveries and a recent daring foray to a small Waitrose (not sure you have them stateside) revealed empty shelves too. We tried using regular cream of mushroom instead in a recipe a few weeks ago. . . it was not a great success and has not been repeated.
LaurieB says
I live in Georgia where magical thinking has turned into a plan. Phooey on that. I was at the grocery today and there were very few folks with masks on. I was covered as much as possible with my antiseptic spray at hand. I can’t help but think those who don’t believe in the actuality of the pandemic , thinking instead it’s a political scam will have a hard abrupt meeting with reality when the virus spreads throughout the rest of the state. I’m not looking forward to that, there are too many guns here and too few brains. Keep wearing whatever you need to feel safe.

I had to go out for groceries for only the third time this year. I’m a senior with a terrible immune system but still kicking! Anywho, I scored big time at Costco with 30 roll package of toilet paper!! I was down to two rolls so YEAH!! Another big score was raspberries a $3 and change for 12oz and as a fruitaholic, I’m happy to get my drug of choice, heh. Because it’s a business Costco, wind up the whole deal with enough chicken to last until the next century and a bottle of much needed dishwashing liquid and all’s right with my world. The only black spot on the day is now I don’t have an excuse not to do the dishes. Y’all take care.

I’m a little late, but bonne chance! Being in healthcare, I’ve been forced out everyday, but good hand hygiene, conscientiously avoiding overpopulated spaces (and recently vacated places, those bugs hang in the air for a while), and masking up (mostly for the protection of others) has kept me healthy so far. You can do this! Get that chocolate and wash your hands…then wash them again for good measure. ????
PS I love you guys! Thank you so much for your generosity and Ryder. ❤️
Donna A says
There is a weird thing here in London wherein some people have suddenly come to believe that wearing a face mask and/or gloves makes them invulnerable. I cannot count how many people have ignored the two metre rule walking past my mother and I while they are wearing face masks.
It is infuriating on numerous levels – they are violating our space and putting us at risk; they are endangering themselves and others; they are not even using said PPE correctly (raising and lowering it, ie to smoke, chat, breathe better, all inviolates it’s efficacy); they are wasting necessary resources; they feel safe and so act irresponsibly due to misinformation leaving me no viable anger outlet. It’s all very Grrrrr!!
Facemasks do not protect you, they protect others from you. They may offer some additional slight protection to a person but this is negligible and as they are still unaware of the exact transmission process (water droplets is believed but if it’s airborne. . .) They also do not stop the spread of contact germs ie, from brushing up against someone or sweat flying onto a passing body.
In the UK at present facemasks are not compulsory wear, and my thoughts are they would likely only become guideline use in enclosed spaces such as public transport and shops in order to better protect everybody from any asymptomatic carriers once the lockdown has lessened. There is however a law that people must not go within two metres of non-household members. You cannot congregate. You can only go out for specific reasons. Everywhere has two metre markings.
The ECDC, the WHO and various other scientific studies have all frequently explained the use of face masks and how they can help in fighting covid19, but the press and media journalists (many of whom I feel have been irresponsible in their reporting for much of the crisis) seem to exacerbate peoples’ eagerness to end the lockdown, speculating constantly about it; and putting out misleading headlines that seem to represent one view even as the body of the article might say otherwise. I watched a TV news report that seemed to be suggesting masks had suddenly been found more effective so I continued to watch only to be shown studies I already knew and the same guidance WHO had been publishing from the very beginning. However the headline had made it seem as if yes, a mask would greatly help me and we would all be saved.
Important news should be reported as if speaking to the lowest common denominator, and as such ethically and morally, certain subjects should be more clearly and carefully reported. Speculation in a newspaper is often taken as truth by it’s readership. Headlines are often skimmed by readers and viewers both, so in times of crisis they should be as clear and straightforward as possible.
Social media is definitely culpable of spreading confusion and misinformation but I don’t think the real press are always that much better and I have been very disappointed by what I’ve seen over these past weeks.
Good grief that turned into a terrible rant.
Please ignore all of that and think of kittens. In masks or not as you wish.

Good luck, and safe trip to and back from wherever your travels take you! Don’t give a thought to the next Ryder scene. We are adults (most of us!????), and can restrain ourselves to wait patiently for the next Ryder scene, and show gratitude for everything you choose to share with the BDH.

I hope it all went ok. Ihad to go out yesterday here in Corpus Christi, TX. It is very “interesting.” Now that things have opened up a bit. Lots of people going to the beach and out and about. Some are doing great at keeping a distance and wearing masks. Other places it seems like no one but myself and the employees are wearing masks or concerned. Sigh, hopefully we will all be ok. I have a lot of people with medical issues, including myself. It worries me when I see so many being so blasé about mine their own health.

I am in the “lucky country”. I live on a 900 acre farm, and usually only go to town about once a fortnight. They are starting to lift restrictions in Aussie. My daughter phoned me today to let me know she was allowed back at work. People in town are using the hand sanitizer stations at the entry to shops. Not many people using masks, but I heard they were limited in safety. the best idea was to keep your hands clean and don’t touch your face.
