We finished a small bonus bit for the trade paperback, our editor read it and pronounced it good, so full speed ahead. As always, the bonus scene is a true bonus, so you don’t have to buy, but I would recommend reading it. It dovetails into Homecoming, which is Solentine’s short story.
The vacation is not in the cards this year, unless we escape after the edits in September, so I have to settle for a computer vacation instead.
Behold, scurvy dogs, Captain Miradora, the scourge of the Seven Seas. Well, actually, just Caribbean, but in theory the Seven Seas.
Windrose is a new survival game currently in early access on Steam and Epic Games, and it is a pirate adventure. Blackbeard somehow got a hold of some artifact, and now the islands are plagues by the undead pirates. You are the only force standing in his way, yeah!
You hunt feral pigs, you explore ruins, you fight pirates, you build your base, and you scour the sea on your awesome ship sinking Blackbeard’s ships. There are factions, quests, and lots of exploring. It is kind of like Conan Exiles but improved. There are actual quests and NPCs. And sailing! All the cool sailing!

As you can probably tell, we are having way too much fun with this. There is not too much there right now, only three zones, but we both really like running around and killing things so we can get resources and build just the right type of railing.

My husband and I play board games though and we’re currently deep into Frosthaven. Due to small kids it’s taking a long but we’re slowly playing our way though it.
I also don’t play a lot of computer games, too many hours in front of the screen at work, so I just don’t want to start the computer in the evenings…
But I’m about halfway through Gloomhaven with a group of friends and my brother already bought Frosthaven, so since we only manage to play about once a month, we still have plenty to do 😉

I need to get into some gaming now that I’m retired. Do you play in your office chair or do you have a dedicated gaming chair? I’m not sure how long my butt can sit in my current office chair.
I started developing serious lower back problems at one point from sitting too much, so I actually have an adjustable desk that I can raise to stand,(they are are super cheap now,) and an Aeron Chair by Herman Miller. Gordon bought it for me despite it being ridiculously expensive. It is the only chair I can sit in without issues for hours. Also, surprisingly, a knock off wire chair from Office Max also works for me.
Love my Aeron chair at work. Unfortunately it has one gimpy arm, but I don’t dare ask for repair or replacement because I don’t think they’d let me have another one. Luckily the mesh seat doesn’t wear out.
Had to retire my Aeron after 29 years 😳(yes it was one of the very first during the dot.com bubble! but wow did it hold up! 🤩), but immediately replaced it with another one! And yes, the sit/stand desk with the Aeron chair is so awesome!
I do have an adjustable desk. And it turns out we had Aeron chairs in the conference room at my old place. People kept swapping out their desk chairs for them. I *might* have done the same. Didn’t know the name until I just looked it up. I’ll check them out for my home office. Thanks!

I’m in the midst of the IFA Summer Reading Challenge. I’m not a gamer. My husband is. Once the challenge is over I’ll be catching up on the new audios from HA and re-reading the Inheritance.
Fun! I’ve been playing Firefighter Simulator with my brother, Minecraft with my nephew, as well as Harry Potter and Stardew Valley every once in a while.
I play more cards than anything, usually while waiting for something.

Wow, the graphics are amazing. Maybe I’ll try this. Last game I tried was Skyrim. I couldn’t take being mean. The going in and getting loot from the little old blind lady’s house broke me. I thought when I came out she’d change and fight me, but no, she just said something like “So nice to have you visit” when I left. It kept me up all night, in the morning, I went back and put all the loot back and never played anything again LOL

I had fun once upon a time running around playing pirates in the SCA. I also spent a trip to Turkey’s coast playing pirates and looking for booty – the treasure kind, not the other kind. If you ever get the chance take a blue cruise in Turkey. The water was crystal clear, the scenery gorgeous, and it was really inexpensive.
Yeah for a bonus story!! I’ll be eagerly awaiting news.
I have been playing Mario Kart on Nintendo Switch 2.
You can unlock new cars to drive and new drivers wearing different outfits by winning races or finding special golden food bags or massive coin stacks.
My favorite outfit unlocks are the dolphin, Princess Peach as a farmer in overalls, the snowman, the vampire, or the mariachi hat.
I always go back to my tried and true… Zelda’s Breath of the Wild. I love it. I’m addicted. I keep debating whether or not to try Tears of the Kingdom.
Ooo! I love both of these games. You should definitely try out Tears of the Kingdom. I actually prefer it to BOTW. There is literally more to explore and play with and I really enjoyed getting to be creative with the new gameplay mechanics. You will not regret playing it.
I’m playing Palworld now that it’s in 1.0 and I’m having a blast. I will probably pick up Windrose in EA once it’s a little more developed, too. Can you build/customize the ships?
Yes. Yes you can. So far there are three ships: Ketch, the starting ship, Brig, a little better, and finally, the Frigate. There are three variants of each. Standard, Brethren variant and Blackbeard variant. Blackbeard versions are faster and carry more guns but have less armor and cargo space. Basically glass cannons. The Brethren variant is basically a floating fortress but it’s top speed is 16 knots.

I am so, so close to finishing Silksong. I’m at 100% and I’ve “only” got Lost Lace left. Also I started a new play through of Dragon Age Veilguard because DA is my heart universe.
I haven’t played video or computer games since about 30 years ago. Looks like games have come a long way.
Reading is my favorite way to relax, stimulate my mind etc. But I decided this is the summer I get my house, yard, belongings, tools , garage etc in order. So I’m busy as heck in between looking g for good books. I just discovered Tuyo by Rachel Neumeier.
Palworld, just released into 1.0, has an utterly satisfying gameplay loop, cute critters and a gorgeous world to explore. Light on story, it has just enough to keep a thread of interest in finding the next location. The storage/crafting interface is the best I’ve dealt with, tied with V Rising.
Looks fun! I enjoyed Baldurs Gate 3 when it came out and I love coming back to my favourites – Mass Effect Trilogy and Dragon age series (the last one sadly disappointed). Lately though I mostly play live D&D with friends, which is awesome

Im not playing but my 12 yr old has discovered Halo and Elder Scrolls. It is Summer so he get 3 hours of game play everyday if he doesnt watch tv. He is also reading the Halo books.
I work from home and also take him to band and track practice in the evenings.
So everyday I feel as if I too have played or read something about Halo or Elder scrolls.
I tried redirecting him to his father and older brother who have played or occasionally still dables in both games. But nope mom is new to this (he thinks) so I get to hear all about it.
Friend got me to start Warframe sometime at the start of the year, and I’m still (happily) stuck with it. Although I did get Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth, Strange Antiquities and Coffee Talk Tokyo for nice easy games to play at summer vacation. Just haven’t started any of them yet.
Btw, can someone tell me what is the difference between trade paperback and paperback? Is trade paperback something anyone can buy anywhere around the world? Or is it something exclusive?
Google says a trade paperback is more the size of a hardback, I assume it would be available wherever else you could buy TKWNKM 🙂 I assume the short story will end up being available on its own, maybe on this site since it’s recommended to be read even if you don’t buy the book!
Paperback format comes in two types:
-trade: larger, usually better binding and quality of paper
-mass-market or pocket: the small, usually cheaper made and looking version. This version is not very common nowadays.
So all trades are paperback, but not all paperbacks are trade 🙂.

I play a game obsessively for about 50 hours before switching to something new. I was influenced by a few cozy gamers I follow and I’m about 10 hours into Moonlight Peaks after it interrupted Palworld (which I will definitely get back to!) I may have stayed up till 2 am playing and am suffering at work today as a result… 😅
editing is probably what I lot of folk wish I’d do before I post, when in a rush the Autocorupt gremlins have a field day with my messages. I do sometimes wonder how others understand me. so I feel the pain of having to go back once and then once more (after which point as I’m not house Andrews I give up and post) .
no real games for me on the computer, I do like board games, but often baby organise myself and my mates to be about to play said games. but still like looking at the nice shiny and imagine 🙂
we’ve been playing a lot of Slay the Spire 2 and Tiny Bookshop! Tiny Bookshop is a cozy game where you have a bookshop trailer in a seaside town and drive around selling books. You can change the decorations and do quests, but my favorite part is giving people recommendations. Historical thriller that’s not too long? Travel guide with lots of nature? It’s fun finding the perfect book fit.
Regular World of Warcraft. Decorated the house. Need to add pets. We are also on stay-cation this year. It sucks. Good luck 🍀 with the edits!

All the pets! I’m going to build a full on walk-thru aquarium in my house. And I have a catio that must be populated with cats! Built a pond outside that is waiting for frogs …maybe ducks….and there will be chickens and a cow. Housing is a blast
I have been playing Tiny Book Shop and Spirit City Lo To Sessions. I love cozy games. I played Disney Dreamlight for quite some time but eventually burned myself out.
Not a computer gamer, or even much of a gamer, but hubby is; and recently took me on a date to a D&D game night with a professional DM running a one-shot specifically geared toward newbs. To my great surprise, I actually enjoyed myself. I even rolled a “nat 20”, twice.
Goodness gracious, games can actually be, like, fun? Wowie-zowie!
So, we played as a couple of adventurers who were hired to go fetch some amulet thingy from bandits in the desert outside the city. Hijinks ensued.
Upon returning with the amulet, we were rewarded with lots of gold, and some cookies.

Back then, I didn’t really trust online gaming, so when cd rom games for PC and PS2 started to disappear, my gaming era pretty much came to an end.
These days I have to choose my hobbies very carefully, because personal time isn’t exactly infinite like it is in a video game! 🤣

That looks so awesome, but I am way too OCD to get involved in that kind of thing. Stayed up an hour past my bedtime last night to finish a book I’d already read at least twice before (Chaos Reigning by Jessie Mihalik). The closest it’s safe for me to get to gaming is litRPG.
[Edit Mod R – we’re staying with game recommendations today 🙂] Other than that it’s mowing, weeding, hiking with the dogs, working with a family member’s filly and taking care of my own ponies.
Our family beach week was in mid-July, so vacation did happen, and it was lots of fun. A couple days last week were spent with old friends who are basically family, remembering one of the older generation who had passed away. It was a Quaker service, which is a lovely way to do that, and all of the venues involved were lovely. So those days were restorative in their way, as much as they were bittersweet.
I hope you all get to shoehorn in some kind of vacation time soon. The virtual Caribbean does look like fun though.

Snacktorio has taken over my life this summer. It’s a ‘simple’ side scroll-esque, cozy food factory game. You are a goblin making punny foods for bottomless pit void monsters. I feel it has a very good learning curve and I love that it is mission based instead of open world, although there is a sandbox mode for those that would rather not have those restrictions. I just got the last of the Steam Achievements earlier today, so can officially say I finished the game. Naturally I’m on my second playthrough now.
And of course Final Fantasy XIV (yay Evercold expansion in Jan!) on Thursday nights with my Free Company.

Per Amazon, the trade paperback release date is 3/30/27. So exactly 1 year from the original release date, and hopefully only 4 months before the release of Book 2 (being slated for “the second half of 2027).
Mod R- Don’t tell Ilona & Andrew I asked this, I don’t want to stress them out, but…. Will the US vellum fit well enough in the trade paperback release date? I haven’t ordered my vellum yet, and I have already pre-ordered the trade paperback release date. I’m still hoping for score a *reasonably priced* Owlcrate hard cover, but have accepted that may not happen.

I’m currently bouncing between several games, mainly “Subnautica 2” (early access underwater survival crafting, beautiful but scary), “Moonlighter 2 ” (also early access, a shopkeeper who has to find his wares in dungeon fighting), “Hardspace: shipbreaker” (dismantling old shaceships in zero g, trying not to die, very satisfying somehow) and “against the storm” (strategy survival with roguelite elements, meaning it’s better to win your missions but the game isn’t stuck if sometimes you lose – keeps me from going completely perfectionst, because I’m fine with “wasting time gaming” but I don’t have enough time to repeatedly play several hours of the same mission till I get it right anymore).
I hope you enjoy some more break times and get your misbehaving sentences where you want them 🙂

So, to answer your question…. Alas, the only playing I’m doing this summer is ‘playing without a full deck’! I’m allowed though! 😂 Let me explain.
I am currently in the middle of helping my daughter get ready to move clear across the country to continue her studies (and leaving her parents and two kitties in the throes of Empty Nest Syndrome!!) I am SO proud of her and absolutely thrilled to see her following her dream, but my goodness, Parenting is NOT for the faint of heart!!!! 😢
And at the same time, a little voice in me said “hey, I know a great way to distract yourself!” To this end, I’m also getting ready to go back to school (after five decades!) to get my Associate of Arts! I think it’s going to be a VERY interesting fall! 🤪🥳😂💕💕💕

Going back to school after the kids leave home is my favorite thing to do! I’m currently 71 and finishing my doctoral degree. I just never really stopped once I started. But a good day to me is a day when I learn something new, so when I’m in school most days are good. Be patient with yourself though. You’ll find you learn very differently now than you did before, but it’s a good different. It just takes some adjusting. Good luck!!!

I played Guildwars 2 quite regularly (in between reading, gardening & grannying). Windrose looks awesome; if I had time for another game I would give it a go.
I think I’ll recommend it to my adult kids, as it sounds a bit like Valheim (but with pirates). I can live vicariously through them!

A couple of months ago I started WoW Midnight. Can’t tell you how many times my Dwarf (Alliance) has bit it. The Pandau (Horde) is doing better, but that one I’m gaming with a friend group with, one of whom was an early WoW user.

I don’t play games, but I do jigsaw puzzles. Current puzzle on my table is a Puzzle Twist puzzle. The twist is that the puzzle in the box has differences from the puzzle pictured on the box. I’m actually not a fan of the concept, but I bought it on vacation in a favorite place, and it’s an artistic map of said place.
I’m currently playing Ghost of Yotei and just discovered the joy setting my kursarigama on fire and twirling around my enemies like a firenado ninja. Great game! Only downside is there’s no building system, but I can’t see the MC Atsu slowing down her revenge quest to build even a lean-to. She’s so fierce. Happy zombie hunting!
Currently, replaying Zelda, Breath of the Wild. It is such a good game. I last played it when my first child was born when I was breastfeeding him, and he would always go to sleep on me afterwards. It was the perfect break. Now he is 9 years old!

I’ve been playing Final Fantasy XIV online on PlayStation, we got into it about four and a half years ago. These days, I have to stick to one game at a time because otherwise my muscle memory gets confused and my character opens a map instead of jumping. 😅🙈
New York Times game. Waffle. Sudoku. Balatro. Hexa Blast. And the ever popular Candy Crush (the music turned off or it would drive me insane).
Grimshire! It’s addictive although a little repetitive but sometimes that’s a nice way to switch off.
My game this summer is ‘The Last Caretaker’.
I heard that Windrose could need some balancing. do you agree? Seems like a cool game, it’s on my wishlist.

This year started with Return to Moria. (Love that game) Now it looks like like I’m the only one playing Dune awakening since they made PVP optional. Like the game but coming to the end soon so I’m on the lookout for a new game. I tried Windrose when it first came out but got frustrated trying to figure out what order I needed to advance.
Ark Survivor Evolved – I just got killed by the same Level 130 Raptor three times in a row so I’m having a break.

I play Ark Survival Ascended. We are currently on the new Genesis I map which happens to be pirate theme. I can’t “drive “ a ship for diddly, look like a drunken walrus lurching around, lol. Oh and I despise raptors and pegos, kill everyone I see!
A computer vacation sounds like a pretty good substitute when a real trip has to wait.

I pretty much only play console games. This summer has been a lot of Plants vs Zombies Battle for Neighborville with my son (11) and I started Diablo IV. I have seen and known so many people that play Diablo ovee the years but never actually played it myself until now. Pretty doom and gloom and a little more complex that what I want in what is a stress relief activity for me. However, overall I really like it 👍

Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii. The Yakuza games are a blast anyway, but this one is close to perfect.

I’ve been playing and loving The Planet Crafter on Steam. It’s a cozy survival/exploration/crafting game where the goal is to terraform a barren planet. I’m about to re-design my base for the fourth time now that I’ve unlocked more goodies!

I don’t play world building type games, just less involved finding hidden object games. Right now I’m replaying Jewel Quest Solitaire, from about 20 years ago lol. I do enjoy all the Glass Masquerade games on Steam, lovely stained glass puzzles with a relaxing soundtrack!
Over and over, Tears of the Kingdom. It’s hard and extremely frustrating for me to learn a new game, but my grandkids sucked me into this one and now I just keep playing it. I like killing monsters, solving puzzles, discovering new places and all the climbing, running, jumping and paragliding I get to do that this old body can’t any more. And the scenery is AMAZING! Walking on the beach at sunrise is a favorite. Yesterday I found 3 shrines. OK, so the internet helps with that.😉

Your pirate game looks really fun! I’m currently playing Valheim on Steam. It’s pretty similar in some ways, except you’re Vikings instead of pirates. You run around, fight enemies, gather resources, craft gear, build your base, and sail the seas. I’ve been having a great time with it.

On my computer I am playing Heroes of Science and Fiction, which translates Heroes of Might and Magic III to a sf setting.
A couple of weeks ago I played Arkham Horror 2nd edition for the first time in a while, and then was very happy when Fantasy Flight games announced last week that they were bring it back in print after it had been out of print for years.
I am playing guild wars 2 right now. The base game was free, base game is game as it was released in 2012 with no expansions so lots of hours of gameplay. No subscription.

I have been on bed rest from an injury for almost 2 years now (I am almost at end DR says end of October I will be able to slowly transition back into the world) but to say I am at the end of my ability to find entertainment is an understatement.
In the last two years I have read over 2000 books both ebooks, textbooks, paperbooks… books books books haha and alot of rereads of old favourites too.
So I actually found an online D&D esque game. I love it because I can play it on my ipad. You dont actually get to roll dice the game does all the probabilities in the background. The graphics are a bit basic in that baddies jiggle and bob but all the action happens in a text log. You and enemy take action turns and the game engine describes it as you go like a dungeon master.
You have the option of being a crafter or a fight or both depending on what you want to try. It has a few different fighting options, like dungeond, exploring depths. If you want to craft you can set up stores for everything you make in regards to professions. You play mini games to craft and gather materials. Player arena where you fight minsters in waves to see how far you can get. I just started playing it two weeks ago and I love it. You can also build up your residence or create holdings to farm materials. I am exploring all options with my first character to see how it all works. I even created a guild called the book devouring hoard haha
The game world is based on books by the author Jay Krauss ( might have spelled that wrong) I am enjoying the book so far but I just started it and am totally distracted by the game.
Can you tell I am still in the excited honeymoon phase haha game is also still working out bugs here and there I think it only launched a month or 2 ago. Its called immortals online game. You can search for it or string the three words together and add .com not sure we are allowed to put links or anything… so yeah more of a text based planning and plotting game and not so much graphics and moden video game format 😀 I found it by following a recommend by Quest academy author (books recommended by HA)

Question about the trade paperback- the US edition is showing up with the same cover as the hardback, but the UK ones don’t have a cover reveal yet so I’m guessing it will be a different cover. Will the UK version have the bonus content as well?

Open world survival crafting junkie here. I’m in the middle of my first Palworld play through and it’s pretty good – it feels more like Ark with monsters instead of a Pokemon knockoff to me.
I love my Saleblazers too – that’s my “comfort game” that I always go back to.
I’m also keeping an eye on a yet-to-be-released game, Tomo: Endless Blue. It’ looks like it’ll be an open world creature collector with ships and base building 🙂
I was spending time with Enshrouded, but then Leafy Corner dropped and now I must get to level 5 so that I can propagate my variegated beauties.
I am playing Final Fantasy X Remastered on Nintendo Switch. No internet at home, just on my phone, so I can’t be suckered into working extra at home.

I’m playing two games, both in early access on Steam. I don’t know if they are available on other platforms.
The 1st game is called Aska and it is a Survival Viking game. The premise: Your people have disrespected the Gods and made them very very mad. So they have dropped you onto an island filled with wolves, bears, and pests called Smolkers. It is also full of skeletons, wights, and draugers.
You have to build a settlement, summon your fellow villagers from where the Gods are holding them, and assign them tasks. Near end-game you will be able to go sailing on your own Viking ship with a whole crew of 8 fellow Vikings to explore different islands.
There are 6? bosses on the main island and 2 bosses on the outer islands after you can sail. The finale, or end game, is not fully fleshed out. There isn’t a “finish” yet. No quests. You have goals that if you succeed in those goals will get you badges, but they are not required, and do not increase or affect your game play.
The 2nd game is called Bellwright. It is also a survival game, but the game is all driven by quests. The storyline is a medieval land where you are an orphan who survived a purge by the King. It is a dark back story. The land used to have bellwrights, which were protectors of individual villages, currently under control by the corrupt Lord. There are 6? villages in the land.
The goal is to become the bellwright of every village, and eventually the kingdom. You have to defeat roaming bandits, bandit camps, eventually brigands who are “patrolling” the villages, and finally the Lord.
But you cannot become a Bellwright of a village until you gain their trust. And you gain their trust by killing bandits, destroying bandit camps, and completing quests local to that village.
It is a survival game, you build a settlement, build trust, recruit villagers, assign them tasks, research better gear and equipment, and recruit better villagers. As you build trust with the villages you can recruit better skilled villagers. Tier 3 research, buildings, and villagers are locked out until you become a Bellwright and are able to recruit specialized villagers.
For both games, it is 3rd person fighting, where you run around and fight on your own, or you can have an army that you command to run around and fight for you.
I highly recommend both games if you like survival games.

I’m playing Clash of Clan(as Mechcat, clan is Celtic Heroes, if anyone is looking, just mention the Horde in the req to join). We r currently engaged in epic daily battles against other clans in the monthly Clan League War week. And they’re doing a card thing this month. I’m also many years into the campaign to get permission for my nephew to join. He’s eager, so I’m sure to win that one eventually.
Having finished Baldur’s Gate 3 (multiple times), my husband and I started a previous game, Divinity. We haven’t gotten very far yet, but have both obtained buckets to use as helmets. Also, apparently elves = cannibals, yuck. However, there is a cat I can get to follow me around, so I’m on the lookout for her.
And we’re also well into Split Fiction, but have found it is slow going. Some levels leave us feeling jangled. It is nice to play a game designed for 2 ppl.
Oh, and we also play D&D (over zoom) weekly, one of which is currently ShadowDark. Anyone that hasn’t tried D&D should give it a try. With an experienced DM you’re sure to have fun. Even listening to my husband DM with some friends is endlessly entertaining-they once hilariously spent an entire hour trying to break into a temple to get the ‘good’ holy water. (There is no such thing as ‘good’ holy water. It’s either holy or it’s not.) They started standing by a fountain of holy water… I about died laughing.
Oh that looks cool!! The UI also looks polished and neat! I wonder how well that plays. Gives me some black flag vibes.
First reply to a post (scary), but since this is a game post I felt like I should build up the courage. I work in Game dev myself as a UI developer so UI is always the first thing I look at – and can be a deal breaker if it’s off (why did they do this?? couldn’t they have just xyz) 😅
Last game I played was Floodland – which is a survival, city base builder (kind of in the same category as Frostpunk & Ixion – which are both awesome if you like that sort of thing – I was very obsessed at the time and would continue playing in my dreams haha). The Floodland gameplay was fun and good but the art & atmosphere of the game was where it really shines. The soundtrack was great (and at some point the literal song – I wished that would repeat more).

Fields of Mistria has been my computer vacation this week.
