We have been published in Russia!

I know you’re fixing to complain about the covers. Don’t ruin my moment.

Finally. So we sold the rights to KD to a Russian publisher years ago, but the book publication date kept being pushed back and back until finally they were in breach of contract, and the rights reverted. I am so glad EKSMO came along and nabbed them, because look, books! In Russian! They exist.

I have sent a link to my father through Skype and braced for the lecture on how we wrote everything wrong.

Woo! Russian books! Okay, have to go back to EMERALD BLAZE now.

    • It says “Magic wounds (v.)” and “Magic Burns”, so I’m guessing 1 & 2, but it could technically be 4 & 2.

  28. Is your Dad published in Russia? If he isn’t, you can just tell him “come back to me with your criticisms when you get published in x number of countries”.

    I too am really interested in how the translation service works, and if you get to critique/veto it prior to release? There is such scope for the feel of the story to change.

    People posting here: do not be buzz kills. Some words just do not translate “cleanly” or “clearly” from English to Russian (And many languages for that matter). Also, some countries have, shall we say, limitations on situations or scenes that can be published. Enjoy the author’s accomplishments and hold the criticism.

    Another country to join the BDH – or whatever that translates to. They are most welcome, though translation may get weird.

    The nit-pickers will have an entirely different set of complaints, since Americans are largely ignorant about Russian mythology. (We just assume you know what you are writing about and don’t worry.) There will be at least one person screaming about how you got it all wrong and what do you know – you’re just an American! (Please let us see a translation so we can giggle about it.)

  63. Congratulations. The covers are fine and anyone who complains about them should take a deep breath and shut up. I have never understood the folks who can’t just be unabashedly pleased for someone else’s good news and rejoice uncritically for another’s pleasure. You and Gordon deserve every bit of good news and fortune that comes your way and having your books published in your birth country is special good news. And wonderful news too for those lucky folks in Russia who will now have a chance to read your fine and entertaining writing in their own language.

  74. These covers are great – more of a fit to HL for sure but Kate deserves pretty covers as well. Now you can read the Russian translation and laugh everytime the translator f*** up your native language. 😀

  79. Complain about the covers? They’re great! It’s pretty rare to see that perfect combination of utterly gorgeous art and poor design choices. I particularly love the choice to feature the salamander who only appears in the opening chapter of Magic Burns as an Important Story Feature (presumably because of the word ‘Burns’ in the name).

    Wish I could read Russian. Or at least knew people I could gift them to…
    Pretty sure the only one of the languages I speak well that your books are published in is English. They’re not available in Spanish or Portuguese at the moment, are they? If they are, I’ll encourage my local bookstore to get them in stock (we might have a big enough population locally for Spanish or Portuguese).

  89. Here’s hoping the translations are good. When I go to Lithuania, I usually buy a couple of books originally published in English. So many of the translations are awful. (Tip: Harry Potter was excellently done, Carl Hiaasen’s were shameful).

  103. Congratulations! How exciting for you and your Dad! Regardless of what he says to you, I have no doubt there will be bragging happening locally. I’ve always wondered why the same covers aren’t used when books are published in a different language. I’m sure it’s legal issues along with that particular country’s “tastes.” Oh well, as long as they stay with the same visual look the books will be easy to recognize for your new fans, and there will be lots of new fans. You may need a new Russian language blog! I remember three words from college Russian, hello, goodbye, and river but only spoken not written. Again, congratulations!

  106. I think the covers look very cool and would totally pick them up off a shelf or from my library’s ebook collection. In fact, my library buys some books in Russian, so maybe I’ll see these there!
    Pardon my bad Google Translate skills, but does anyone know what the very bottom line on each cover is? I figured out author and title but can’t manage to get those last lines figured out…

    • Try Google Translate. Download to your phone and you can actually get a “live” translation by selecting “Camera” as the source then pointing your phone’s camera at the text.

    • So, the first one is for Magic Wounds (aka magic bites, lol): find the conspiracy (could also be “plot”?), find yourself.

      Second one is Magic Burns (that title is the same as in English): magic waves against techno tides.

      Doesn’t make complete sense to me, but my Russian is about 40 years out of date. That’s the best I can do.

  126. So I had fun copying-and-pasting the text from the EKSMO webpage into a translation program. I have to admit that the quotations don’t sound quite as I remember them, going from English to Russian to English again! One of the book titles made me laugh: “Magic is on fire” – that would be “Magic Burns”, I presume 😉

    I had a year of Russian in college as I always wanted to visit there. Sadly I remember only a little and never got to visit. I do love the Cyrillic letters though.

  132. It’s funny, I read the Harry Potter books in both English and Greek, first in Greek and later on, once I moved to the UK, in English as I did not bring the books with me. I was shocked to realise that there were definitely parts of the book where the translation was clearly not exact. I mean, I know sometimes it is difficult sometimes to explain things in the same context in another language due to different in expressions etc but some jokes were funnier in Greek because the translator changed the jokes themselves!

    I was actually recently considering sending you a couple of questions recently about how foreign language editions come to be, and whether there was a Russian edition of any of your books. I’ve been working to obtain a handful of my favorite books in the non-English languages that I currently read (German and Spanish) as well as languages that I currently only know the niceties of but intend to improve (specifically Russian and Japanese; I have very little hope of finding any Icelandic or Inuktitut editions of any of my favorite novels). Super excited for you!

  159. Cheers for the Russian translation! And I like the covers too, especially the top one. The face they chose for KD is a good one. She has strong cheekbones, eyebrows, and chin, and deep set eyes. There isn’t much else going on, but the face is compelling. And I, too, would love to know the paternal response.

    • That came out partially wrong. There doesn’t need to be a lot going on, since the face is compelling. More stuff would actually be distracting.

    Were you involved with the translation?
    (I work with translation and translators, and the thought of someone translating my writing without checking it fills me with sheer horror. I see too many translation horrors daily.)

    P.S. *in very small voice* covers still 50 times better than English Nevada trilogy…

    It’s interesting how coloring books have become a global phenomenon. And the nice thing about them is that they don’t even need a translation–I would happily pick up this Russian one if I ever saw it in a store. 🙂

    Checked the titles in Google, bites turned into hurts, which seems equally appropriate, with regard to the contents . Funny how small words can convey different things in different languages..
    I think it’s a wise move to publish the first two books at the same time, I remember I got tempted by book one and hooked by book two.
    The Ilona name should hint at a Russian being behind the stories and hopefully tempt more people .I hope Russian readers enjoy the series as much as I/we have.
