Went to the doctor. It’s probably just a really bad cold, but it might be pneumonia. Had an X-ray. Waiting on results – they will call if it’s pneumonia. Got excused from work for next 2 days.
Haven’t slept more than 4 hours for the last 3 nights. Super tired. In bed. Can’t breathe so can’t sleep. If you offer me any more advice or remedies in the comments, I will cut you. I mean it.
Lessons learned from Lifetime movies: menz are bad. Except when they are hunky PIs helping you clear your name.
Lessons learned from Britbox and Acorn TV: Britain is a horrible place of rugged hills and vicious sea, where everything is filmed through blue-gray filter, it’s always cold, and people get murdered in droves, while somber detectives incapable of humor solve crimes taking themselves absurdly seriously.
Gordon is now sick.
Sabrina says
Hope you guys feel better soon! Being sick is the worst!!
Isha says
Won’t offer remedies I feel the same when people do that just feel better soon.
Korey says
Well you’d have to catch me to cut me. 😉
Wallander? I also liked Luther.
Mary Beth says
+1 on Wallandar and Luther
Also check out the new Sabrina Teen Age Witch on Netflix. Looks awesome.
MerryB says
I’m so sorry. Hugs to you all. May no one else get sick. May you all get better easily and quickly. Thank for posting.
kitkat9000 says
Don’t think there’s anyone left…
PSMH says
I’m so sorry. Sending best wishes for rest and recovery.
jewelwing says
Are you making dirty jokes that he can’t appreciate?
Hope you all get some relief quickly. Also hope the kids have recovered enough to be helpful.
Tamara says
Aww, I’m so sorry. I hope it’s just a bad cold and the all will pass soon. Miss Marple is a good mystery series and Poirot is always Marvelous.
Allan says
I hope he gives you good drugs so you can breathe.
Phyllis says
Acorn TV: Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. for fun and for fashion. also for British and Australian accents.
marcia l Sundquist says
loved her on pbs sundays. hope you to feel better.
Danithra says
+1 on Miss Fisher – she doesn’t take herself too seriously.
Kristal says
Love that series (Miss Fisher’s that is) ! She is a hoot, and the sets and costumes are amazing!
Siobhan says
The books are also fantastic, and since they don’t involve Jack Robinson as the sexual tension dood (they keep Li Chung as the regular lover, which is soooooooo much sexier), and have an almost completely different backstory, they are different enough that one can enjoy both.
Matt says
Murders, and also Gardens. Lots of gardens (there are murders in the gardens, and wise cracking middle aged ladies will solve them while making the gardens awesome)
Cath says
It’s never just one murder. Find one body and then more start popping up all over the place. I would leave Oxford if Morse or Lewis turned up because it means some homicidal maniac is on the loose. However, Oxford looks beautiful in these programmes…even in the rain!
Kristal says
Rosemary and Thyme another good mystery series!
BonnieB says
Love the Brit’s ‘Vera’ ….. a very desolate type background & coastline with weather to match – but enjoy the way she thinks. 🙂
Feet up & rest … everything else can follow after you’re on the mend.
Teresa says
This advice is just for Gordon. You are both sick so spooning is advisable . It won’t help but feels really good.
Kristal says
Unless coughing is happening. Then all that helps is a good, knock you out, cough syrup. I like nim jiom if I have to work, the honey makes my throat feel better. Jeagermeister works great, it has herbs so that must help right?
Ericka says
ugh. my sympathies. rest well, and heal quickly. did your dad get home okay?
Anonymous says
I’m so sorry you are so sick and I hope you feel much better very soon. I must admit I am so tempted to suggest remedies…but I don’t want to be cut! Har.
JRM says
Yuk, I got really sick and three weeks later went to the doctor for my sinuses, that’s when I found out I had pneumonia. Made me feel better that I was “really” sick. Weird, I know. Keep taking time to get well.
Ruth Ray says
Acorn also carries some Australian shows. Have you tried Brokenwood? I hope it’s not pneumonia and that everyone recovers quickly.
Karen says
I live in England.. Don’t believe everything you see on the TV… Hope you feel better soon.
kitkat9000 says
There goes my chance to recommend my favorite go-to remedies. Darn. Anyway, best wishes for speedy complete healing. Specifying complete because lingering symptoms are the worst. Whoever’s upright can shop and get soup & ice cream.
One of my favorite shows is Mysteries at the Museum. Since I’ve seen every episode of Forensic Files, How It’s Made, Homicide Hunter, and Law & Order this is my new binge show. Don Wildman also hosts shows about mysteries at castles and monuments.
Carolyn says
Try “Hinterland” if you can find it. Set in Wales, where the hills are even more rugged and the sea more vicious. Brooding, noir and very tense.
Cora Nelson says
This has been a terrible virus season. I had two colds in two months including on my vacation. I usually only have one cold every other year. Feel well soon.
Faith says
Sending best wishes for speedy recovery for you and the family. No recomendations or advice, just lots of well wishes. take care!
Sharon says
So sorry – nothing is good when you feel so bad. Hope you both begin recovery soon!
But….just curious. Who is in charge of the remote?
Ami says
Oh man. Sucks when you’re both sick. Then you don’t have a care taker. The lack of sleep is the worst. I hope it passes soon. Rest up. I’ve been binge watching “Forged in Fire”. You’ve probably already heard of it but if not it’s amazing and like Chopped but for blacksmiths. I’m learning so much! Lol And I credit y’all for the parts I already know: “Ohhhh so that’s what they were talking about!”
Tylikcat says
Oh. My. God.
Okay, thing I might have to check out in a little bit. Not now.
(I haven’t played at a forge for a bit now, but there’s a lot forge that offers classes, and I bet the robot lab folks would be totally into this as a social outing. Actually, Fabineer might have had his own forge at one point? Can’t remember…)
Natasha Johnson says
+1 love forged in fire! Have you see the competition one forgot what it’s called but they past forged in fire contenders come with knifes they made and have to try to pass a knife obstacle course type thing, it’s pretty awesome as well!
DianainCa says
On forged in fire, I have to laugh when the one judge smiles when he tells the contestant this blade will kill.
Jenn says
Feel better soon. I personally don’t cope well when I can’t breathe — sending lots of well wishes to you and all.
Esther says
Oooh…. yeah – pneumonia is not a joke. Take ALL the meds the doctor gives you! Drugged sleep is better than no sleep. And make sure to keep doing all the “sick time remedies” you are used to. Nostalgia will give food taste even with a blocked up nose. (That is why “sick food” is not universal, different childhood memories)
Hopefully, you won’t need a hospital trip to clear up your pneumonia. Good luck!
Anne Marie Schultz says
Just a curiosity question: if your self-employed who do you give the doctor’s note to? As is Gordon is latest victim of the illness going around your household, you have successfully completed the circuit, and may give yourself a hand, and pass the misery to a new household. Humidifaction and mounds of pillows are your friend if a recliner isn’t readily available as your lungs are playing capture the germ. So sorry that continue to feel unwell and are therefore subject to marathon TV watching and suggest you switch from British drama/mysteries to comedy to lighten the mood.
Ilona says
I gave mine to Gordon.
Sarah says
Serves him right. After all he was joking and you couldn’t talk. No – I really don’t mean that, but I am saying it anyway.
I was the one who lost my voice periodically and after a while of feeling miserable my sign language wasn’t very nice. Nope not deaf sign language either, but I’m sure some signs are universal. When I am miserable I don’t have very much tolerance.
Wishing you and your household health and happiness.
Sandy says
Glad that you got yourself to the doctor. This season has really sucked. I had my turn in September, but unfortunately was in the wilds of northern B.C. for 3 weeks where there just weren’t any doctors. Hard to enjoy rafting down a river on a cold damp morning to see bears eating salmon when you are miserably sick. So don’t do that. Be a good patient and feel better soon.

This reminds me of the time I had food poisoning and my husband was trying to get me outside to see the Northern Lights. We are near the Mason Dixon Line so it’s a rare treat. I looked at the glowing green curtain for a second and said, “That’s great,” and went back to bed. You have my complete sympathy, because you couldn’t even go back to bed.
Sleepy says
Oh no sad to hear both of you are sick now 🙁
Hope you feel better soon!!
Crystal says
Sorry y’all are all sick, tis the time of year! Hope you all feel better soon. Best time to binge watch anything and everything. I like to go back to Season 1 of Game of Thrones and watch it all unfold again when I’m sick. No nice touchy feely for me, I’m too grumpy.
Colleen C. says
The Plague is rarely spread person-to-person so there is that. Hope you all get over this soon.
jewelwing says
The pneumonic version is. And current thinking is that the pneumonic version was more prevalent than formerly thought, and possibly responsible for more of the epidemics than the bubonic version, which is more visually dramatic and therefore harder to overlook.
However, it’s still unlikely.

Hope you feel better soon, anything that has to do with breathing issues is awful.

A few trips to Oakland ago, my hosts were on a Scandinavian crime movie kick.
All the bleakness. And atmospheric photography. It was pretty great.

Maybe it’s time to watch some Raised by Wolves, AbFab (Absolutely Fabulous), Vicar of Dibley, Keeping Up Appearances or Are You Being Served.
I sympathize. I watched Suspects all weekend and this morning I felt very strange in a conference call with a vendor who happens to be from Ireland.
Moritz says
Gute Besserung! Feel better soon!
Kathryn says
I’m not a doctor, but I have had pneumonia more than once, and two days is not enough time.
What you need is sleep. Lots and lots and lots of sleep.
Sleep is not a remedy, so don’t cut me – although as an earlier poster said, you’d have to catch me to cut me and if you’ve got pneumonia, ain’t no way you’re gonna catch me 🙂
Also fluid. But mostly sleep.
Also, I think that you should just take time off until after Diamond Fire is out. The BDH will survive if you do, but you and Gordon might not if you don’t.
Seriously.
Sleep.
cheryl z says
You’re funny, even when you’re sick. (and a little scary)
Keera says
Oh no rest up guys. I hope you have a friend close by to bring you tea and soup in bed. Or whatever comfort food you might need.
As always the BDH will still be here when you guys recover.
CBS says
Sleep is your friend! Hope you feel better soon.
Natalie says
I advise you to……… Breathe. Breathing is good breathing keeps you alive. It’s been many years since I had that feeling in your chest that you can’t get any more air after something shifts and clogs things. Very thankful I haven’t had that in a long time especially because it would happen yearly during Christmas time on my birthday. Horrible multiple times as a kid being miserably sick with respiratory infections pneumonia bronchitis everything at once. I hope you guys feel better soon. Also have you put a biohazard sign on your door? Luther would be very proud of you if you have.?☣️?
Talio says
Feel better. Get some rest. Don’t worry about us. You’v been there giving us awesome content for free and for sale for years. Take care of yourselves. Pneumonia can take a while and even if it isn’t pneumonia we can wait for you to feel better, you’ve helped us when we were down or needing distractions or entertainment. It’s only fair you find your own to feel better. 🙂
Carol says
Feel better. I binge-watch Netflix Asian comedy when sick – Strongly recommend a Korean paranormal-comedy called Strong-girl Bong. Extremely funny! It does have a very creepy villain, but he does get his just desserts.
Kristal says
+1. I’ve been loving the asian movies on Netflix and Amazon. Cool effects, bizarre villians, lots of martial arts, live action or anime, Chinese, Korean, Indian, it’s all good.
WS says
Yeah, I’m still recovering from the 3-week cold of great exhaustion that’s going around here. (You don’t have that, because we didn’t lose the ability to talk with it.)
I’ve had pneumonia before; it was unpleasant.
Hope you get something that will help you sleep and feel better soon.
Sanare says
Feel better soon both of you! Hope it’s not pnemonia.
Anthea says
*hugs*
Scott Drummond says
Awwwww, so sorry…I hope you all feel better soon
KathyInAiken says
I am glad you are seeing a doctor. If pneumonia, it is not a joke. Favorites in British TV include the gardening shows and all the shows touting estates. Double points if the series is one where they tour the estate and give historical context. Feel better soon – all of you.
Mary Cruickshank-Peed says
I hope you feel better soon, and absolutely +1 on Miss Fisher. The books are so much darker than the TV series, and much more in depth and really really good… but the series is excellent in its own right and I love Essie Davis. (I have The White Princess on my Amazon watch list for next time I decide to binge something because I need a break from everything).
I had pneumonia a couple of years ago… I really hope you don’t have it… I spent a month sleeping in my recliner. I threatened to burn it after that episode but my son rescued it and put it in his room so I never have to look at it again.
Sending healing light for the whole Gordon clan.
Kerry W says
What on earth have you been watching on Britbox and Acorn TV? Fairly certain the last time I looked Britain wasn’t that bad….
p.s. get well soon
Ilona says
Vera…
Kim says
No remedies, just sincere good wishes and crossed fingers that it’s not pneumonia, because that shit lasts forever. Ugh. Feel better soon. (You spoil us. We’ll be here when you get back. Rest- oh crap, now I’m giving advice and dodging the blade. Aargh. Um, bye.)
Valerie says
Sending lots of healing energy! I had bronchitis that turned into pneumonia last year so props to you for being on top of things.
I think rural British villages are extremely dangerous. Midsommer Murder was on for what, 20 seasons with a death every week? Lots of Also, Idris Elba is my imaginary boyfriend. Loved him in everything. #dreamy

One remedy, tea with lemon and rum.
Elizabeth G says
Oooooh rum!

But where’s the rum??? So sorry, I could not resist the Jack Sparrow reference. LoL.

+1 my thoughts exactly!
Leslie says
I am so sorry that you both are now I’ll, I hope you have someone to take care of both of you.

I think it’s all a matter of perspective. Coming from Argentina where there’s no law and everybody works for the drug dealers, I find Britain a wonderful place of rugged hills and vicious sea, where everything is filmed through blue-gray filter, it’s always cold, and maybe one person in a blue moon is murdered, and there is actually a somber detective incapable of humor who is actually trying to solve crime and taking themselves absurdly seriously.
OMG, it’s like institutions actually work. What an idea! What a wonderful precious world in which somebody other than the people than knew me would care about my murder! Amazing.
Also, the weather is shit and my rescue pup still hasn’t forgiven me for bringing her here.
Tylikcat says
See, I so badly want to share this with my German former labmate whom, in his exhortations to me to leave the US already, pointed out that he didn’t just include European countries as preferable alternative places to reside, but a list of other places including Argentina. (Was Uraguay another one? Or is it just on my personal list…?)
(Our conversations were somewhat complicated by the fact that he was unable to remember that I’m twenty years his senior despite having told him on a number of occasions, so he kept being surprised by my having lived outside of the US, or speaking languages other than English and Chinese…)
Pam says
Hope you both feel better soon! Check out Death In Paradise. Fun, quirky series. Not set in England! Color! ?❤️
Colleen Whitley says
Love that one. Also try the series Shetland. It is often cold and grey but the detective is caring and has a sense of humour.
Tina says
Really liked Shetland, I can recommend that one
Simon Lyon says
I prescribe (TV wise so hopefully I’m safe from blades!) a Game of Thrones marathon or Killing Eve if you haven’t seen it.
Simon Lyon says
As far as Britain goes, it’s actually a really nice place (in the summer at least). But TV execs for at least a generation have got it into their heads that detective dramas have to be gritty and grungy, with washed out gray colors, preferably with a backdrop of windswept hills that wouldn’t be out of place in Wuthering Heights or the most dismal of cities. Not exactly doing a lot for the tourism trade guys!!!
I will mention Life on Mars (UK, not the US remake) and it’s follow-up Ashes to Ashes if you can find them on your channels – great fun!
jewelwing says
We stayed in the Chiltern Hills about 25 years ago in May. Sunny and 60s/70s the entire week we were there. All the natives were complaining about the heat. We thought it was fabulous.
Simon Lyon says
Something to know about us Brits generally. When it’s cold we complain it’s too cold. When it’s warm we complain it’s too hot. When it doesn’t rain enough we complain about drought. When it rains too much we complain about floods. Culturally, weather seems to be a big thing for us! 😉
crossfoxfarm@verizon.net says
I think weather is a big thing everywhere. Just never heard anyone describe 60s F as hot before. And in a country where everyone has a greenhouse in their backyard, you all might be a little more attuned to weather I suppose.
Simon Lyon says
Just checked Britbox listings – try Jonathan Creek. It’s absolutely brilliant if you like locked-room mysteries and has a lot of humor.
Tina says
Hallmark has Christmas movies
Evelyn says
So sorry, best wishes for all to get better soonest!??????♀️??
Sandra says
If you want a British detective series in a town where people die in large numbers – see if you can get Midsomer Murders, they’ve averaged 15 people dead per series in one small town 😉
Feel better soon
(Walks away from giving advice as she can do that all day at work)
Ilona says
I know right? How is that place not depopulated yet?
Dr Susan says
Lololololol
Anna L says
carrie vaughn had the same comment at a signing I went to yesterday. I think the answer is they keep sending people to weddings, or people are breeding like bunnies. Wynonna Earp is my go to for TV watching, although right now I”m binging Great British Bake off
Mo says
I think that’s everyone’s comment about Midsomer Murders.
Anna S says
People must keep moving in to replace those that have been murdered. Or the town population would be -213. What an awkward town sign that would be.
Julie Edwards says
I agree! One of my fav series is by Karen Rose….. and there’s tons of serial killers from book to book….. killing tons of people in horrible ways…..I’d be moving if I lived in the city the series is based in! Ha ha!
Hope you and Gordon feel better soon!
Al says
Not judt serial killers, but really sick ones. One has to wonder about her mental health that she can come up with some of those killers. At least she moves cities every few books!
Simon Lyon says
I blame Agatha Christie – she started it with Miss Marple.
Anyone sane would have moved away (or been a victim) after the 30th death!
Most of the shows I watch are US or Canadian (various incarnations of NCIS and the like, SciFi shows, other cop shows like Lethal Weapon, the DC/Marvel superhero shows, etc). Brit TV can do great drama but what they can’t do (except for historical) is mix fun and drama – and *color*.
Doctor Who is an honorable exception of course!
Siobhan says
Or Wire in the Blood where a large town/very small city in Northern England is serial killer central. Like, serial killers have put up a giant sign saying “pickings are good here! And there’s only this shrink and one cop doing anything about us! Convention in December!”
And the “how, if this town is so full of serial killers that they can produce 13 2-hour episodes each season, are there any people left?” was one I asked myself 10-12 times per episode. But I kept watching, because aside from the total implausibility of there being more serial killers operating in this town than in the history of the US, it was a really nifty show.
Tylikcat says
I’m awfully fond of Val McDermid, but… the series in question really doesn’t strike me as one that would be at it’s best transformed into a murder of the week one anyway?
O_o
Lisa C. Smith says
This is what I found when I googled this exact question last year heeheehee https://www.visitmidsomer.com/itv-investigates-midsomer-murder-rate/
Ange in Australia says
I came to have a laugh about Midsomer Murders too. I love British crime dramas but I can’t stand MM.
Wire in the Blood with Robson Green is excellent. High drama. His character is very quirky, especially that bloody plastic bag that made me want to give him an environmentally friendly option. But I digress…
If you want something else, try The Channel which is a joint British/French drama that begins with a body in the absolute middle of the British/French Chunnel. Quite grim but very, very well done. My husband and I watched this on actual TV, shown every Sunday night. We were like junkies waiting for it to be on.
Broadchurch is also very good, and gripped the UK when first shown weekly. Our house too. The weather is better. David Tennant is surly (his character, well acted). Olivia Coleman is excellent. This was remade as Gracepoint for the US market.
Liz Mansfield says
I live near there, I’ve started locking all doors and constantly looking over my shoulder ?
Hannah Goodman says
Well Midsummer is actually the county, not a town. So a slightly bigger population than one town
Gracie O'Neil says
I know. I have the feeling that Joyce Barnaby is actually a closet serial killer intent on depopulating Britain for the good of her husband’s career.
I love Midsomer Murders, but my favorite British detective series is LEWIS. 🙂
Get well soon, both of you.
Hugs from New Zealand.
Heidi price says
I. Glad that I’m not the only one who thinks that joyce is a serial killer, maybe shes frightened that he’ll retire and spend all day at home
Mary h says
I don’t think it will be premeditated, but if Joyce kills anybody it will be poisoning by horrible cooking. Btw, if you can find them, Miss fisher’s murder mysteries are great.
Karen the Griffmom says
+infnity
Frances says
My favourite English TV murder detective series is Vera starring the wonderful Brenda Blethyn. Well worth a look though some may find the northern accent and slang a bit confusing!
Dreamboat Annie says
Here is to the ladies.
How about Helen Mirren in Prime Suspect or Kyra Sedgewick in The Closer (talk about quirky)
I hope all of you get well soon. For cheering up I recommend RED 1 and 2
Dreamboat Annie says
Or Tank Girl
Simon Lyon says
Tank Girl rocks!!! Seriously underrated.
Jo says
Waving. I’m in New Zealand too!
Joylyn Davis says
Hope everyone is back to feeling 100% very soon. Cold’s are the worst! Hopefully you will be able to rest soon!
Shoe says
I had a sudden vision of Kate, with a hideous chest cold/illness, holding her sword in one hand and a box of tissues in another, grumbling, “I will cut out the left lung of the next person who tells me to starve a fever. And I will have the right nostril of the person that suggests a ‘netti pot’. I still won’t be able to breathe but I’ll feel SO MUCH BETTER.”
Tina says
???
Christine says
Hilarious ?
Jo says
I thoughts ilona meant “I will cut you” with a knife. I’ve just worked out it might have been “I will cut you” off from commenting. Lol.
Ilona says
I did mean the knife part.
jewelwing says
Not sword? 🙁
sarafina says
That’s funny. Sorry you feel so bad, Ilona.
Colleen Hodge says
Try the show Killing Eve if you haven’t already. It was very good.
Jasmin says
+1
Also the new BBC Bodyguard series is acceptable.
Billie Dee says
Rest and get well soon. Nasty upper respiratory thing going around Sugar Land and Houston now, too.
Kristal says
Well I left remedies in a response, I am waiting to get cut… on the other hand booze can be good, especially in a hot toddy. My husband was up at 3 on the morning with fluids coming out of both ends. I’m just excited that I didn’t get it! Not so excited cleaning up the bathroom after, and stripping the bed, washing everything because I don’t want whatever it was!
He had pneumonia about 15 years ago with coughing apnea. That was horrible! I would hear him cough and run. I caught him before he fell in the shower, and once I got him at the top of the stairs, whew. If you don’t know that means you cough until you pass out and it doesn’t take long. He was sick about a month. Apparently you cannot get life insurance after having pneumonia (at least that’s what they told us) too high a risk of getting it again and dying. You have to be pneumonia free for a certain period of time (I think it was a year). That was a lovely meeting….
Mary Cruickshank-Peed says
My doctor was very insistent that I get the pneumonia vaccine this year. I said “I’ve had it once” She said “Which is why you need the vaccine.”
Ok, then.
Joan says
I had pneumonia in August 1995 when I was 9 months pregnant with my first child in NYC (from being in + out of air conditioning, outside + subways ?).
My doctors kept telling me I only had strep throat but I’d had that before + I knew this was way worse because I was coughing + had horrible phlegm all day + night. Eventually I insisted they do a test and I was right. How they expected me to breath during labour I don’t know ???
Anyway, I recovered after huge doses of antibiotics. Got 2 ‘A’s in Economics classes I took during Summer School at university – my sincere apologies to my class mates who had the misfortune to have to listen to me cough my guts up every class + exam ?.
Last day of work Friday. Walked around Home Depot for HOURS on Saturday and went into labour that night. My beautiful daughter was born naturally (no time for drugs ?) at 4.30am Sunday morning – on my birthday ? and ‘with full health insurance’ we were discharged from hospital after 1 night even though breathing was still a problem. I visited my work on the way home to show my baby to my co-workers …
INSANE …
I got pneumonia vaccine a few years ago + I get the cold vaccine every year, so I’m fine now… except for … ?
Colleen Whitley says
You have my sympathy. My sister had pneumonia in the latter stages of her first pregnancy. She kept complaining about sore ribs and the doctor kept telling her it was part being pregnant. A year later she had a chest x-ray for a different matter and the tech told her that her rib had healed nicely. What??!! Turns out she had been coughing so hard she had cracked a rib! It wasn’t caught because she was just an inexperienced woman in her first pregnancy complaining about about nothing. We are all still furious with her then doctor as you can infer.
jewelwing says
I knew someone that happened to. Not the pregnancy part though.
Robin Moore says
I loath the paroxysmal coughing where it hurts and feels like you are doing your very best to turn inside out. i am trying to avoid things like the bus now and having to grab on where a million other riders already have. I want to avoid sharing whatever they have.
I am on the 3rd day after doing some very heavy gardening and figuring out just how sore I made myself. OW, epsom salts and hot bath here I come. I stuffed my tablet in a ziplock to read in the bath. I may not come out till spring. Its chilly today.
Dreamboat Annie says
This is great Ilona. Instead of remedies now you get stories of The Sickness Wars.
I also once had pneumonia … *grin*
Teresa says
So funny. I laughed out loud.

Hope you and Gordon feel better soon. It super blows to be so sick.

I love that you take the time to update us. ? these posts are progressing in an interesting manner. Have you ever watched one of those movies where the come into a ship or a station that is deserted and read the logs? 1st everything is cheery and chatty… then it gets darker…then the posts become sporadic and less chatty. Then you read things like… Andrew is now sick.
Margaret R says
I would totally read that….
VeronicaK says
I would also totally read that.

Hope you both feel better soon! I’m from England. It is very cold and the beaches are pebble, so your feet are numb before you hit the freezing water and your heart stops from the temps. This is one of the reasons I live in California! Loved the commentary. No advice or remedies (except hot black tea which is good for everything)
Kath says
We actually had a heatwave this year and there was talk about a draught! We have beautiful rolling hills and green valleys but you need to search them out – The Dales, The Wolds, The Moors, even in Winter, they have a stark but stunning scenery. Come and see. Hope you both feel better soon ?

Beware of angering the gods, sarafina. I remember being really sick exactly twice in my life before I was 25. It’s not hard to stay healthy when you’re young and have only yourself to take care of. The warranty runs out at forty; sooner if you have kids. You might not start learning about compensatory injuries and functional use until your fifth decade. From someone who has never been sedentary or overweight in their life: Aging happens to everyone, if they’re lucky. Counting your blessings is good; being cocky about them, not so much.

Lol! Just got over a bout that sounds a lot like what you were describing. My kitties kept me in bed and snuggled next to me while I went through copious amounts of tissues, cough drops, amoxycilin and acetamenophin (sp? for both) based medicines. Oh, and OJ & Diet Coke with tons of ice. Try drinking ice-cold (so cold your teeth nearly hurt) liquids. Helps freeze open your bronchial tubes (learnt from a childhood with a seriously asthmatic brother who helped split my mom’s attention when he called saying he’d done an ER run over an asthma attack… got some peace for a couple hours as she pestered him for updates).
Tiffany Crystal says
I have yearly bouts with bronchitis, so I’ll be keeping that cold liquid suggestion in mind!

Sorry to hear about Gordon. Thanks for letting us know how your doing ( or not).
And may I say, You poor child! That’s all you have to watch! That’s pitiful! No Sci-fi !!! No Action….. No Adventure! And it’s Halloween too! Even the Charlie Brown Pumpkin movie/show would be more entertaining!

Sorry about your sickness in your family. No remedies, just going to say stick to murder mysteries. Comedies suck when you’re sick. Laughing hurts the ribs already sore from coughing.
Debi Murray says
I am sorry to hear that you are still sick. I am even sorrier that Gordon is now sick, too. Now who is gonna make the soup? Much healing mojo sent to you both.
KC says
There’s nothing worse than being miserably sick and unable to sleep. [In my case, Its usually cause I have to make the choice: do I want to sleep but not take anything for the drainage, or do I want to breathe and therefore wont be able to sleep because the meds that help me with being able to breathe gave the sude effect of keeping me awake.]
My advice is turn off the victim network (oh sorry Lifetime).
If you feel up to following plot, you might enjoy the newly released supernatural series, the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

Really sorry to read that you are felling so bad and that now poor Gordon has followed suit. All my best get well wishes to all of you who are sick in that home. Funny how these “old illnesses” like pneumonia, TB, whooping cough (which I cought last year despite being vaccinated) and so many others are making a “comeback”. Quite scary actually. I hope we are not going towards a Stephen Kings’ “The Stand” kind of situation….
Jo says
We have recently been vaccinated again for whooping cough. The immunity reduces over time for both full infection and vaccination. Now recommending 5 yrly for health care workers and 10 yearly for everyone else to ensure protection. My SIL just had a baby and no one could cuddle him in 1st 8 wks until his vaccines had kicked in unless they had been vaccinated in last 5 years. Her GP and obstetrician gave same advice. My 9 year old decided to wait to hold him. She didn’t want to bring her 11yr booster forward.

Oh ‘The Stand’, good movie!

*wince* Called it. Kinda. Hopefully, it’s NOT pneumonia. Bacterial Sinusitis likes to be rude like that, but ugh. (I couldn’t give any advice, even if I wanted to. Besides, “DON’T CATCH IT!” of course, which, I’m pretty sure counts as closing the barn door after the horses already took off for a wild night on the town. Just sayin’.)
Hope you feel better soon. And aww! How kind of Gordon to get sick, too! Misery does love company, after all…*runs away*

As a soundtrack to your blue-grey filter view of Britain, I can recommend Thunder and Consolation by New Model Army. ‘Green and Grey’ isn’t all about the hills and valleys, but they are there. Even mentions the sea in passing (although not our violent ones!). And even the band name references a time (if not detective) of little humour.
It’s really not horrible here though! Come for some rest when you are better. Maybe not for a few months though!
Aleea Brewer says
Well, no remedies here. Hope you and Gordon get well soon. Maybe consider moving one of you to hotel so you can break the sick cycle. Don’t want to pass it back and forth all winter. (That isn’t a remedy now, that is just prior planning).

OK. FunUK watch is Escape to the Country. People go looking for country homes after living in the City all their lives. The settings are usually in wonderful country places and the houses are weirdly quirky most of the time. The strange part is that at the end, the people usually don’t even buy the houses. (Also, they all want chickens and room for “holiday lets” with big gardens. Obviously, these people have never taken care of farm animals nor cut grass or had to put up with “guests”!)
Also, please, please, please check out the new Dr. Who. I LOOOOVVVEE her!! She is just a great doctor.

Sorry to hear you are feeling under the weather – giving a shout out to Acorn TV and Britbox! No one does police procedures like the Brits! Except maybe sometimes the Aussies…Classics still good today “prime suspect” for one Dame Helen Mirren….if you are looking for something smart and fun and not cold -dreary, rainy hills where people die in droves try “Scomparasa – Tangled Lives” Italian mystery based near the beach, Mystery Road Aussie mystery with Judy Davis and Aaron Pederson, The Good Karma Hospital (see what I did there – India) Newton’s Law (Aussie Law – I want her car!!) so many others I could recommend but trying to stay away from cold and British. (All mentioned found on Acorn). And if you have Netflix – Wanted Aussie 2 Season Marathon must of two very different ladies that are caught up in witnessing a murder and are forced on the run to survive. Some great Korean and Chinese dramas based on popular Mangas and Animes….enjoy

Here again is another reason I love the BDH!
I’m reading the comments and find a TV series ( Wanted) that sounds interesting and is
1Available on Netflix,
2.Stars Rebecca Gibney ( who I’ve loved ever since she was in The Flying Doctors ) and
3. I haven’t seen even though
I’m Australian and it’s an Australian TV series that has already screened on free to air .
I enjoy all the suggestions of authors, films and TV shows people share along the lines of “ If you like Poirot and Marple , you might enjoy Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries” etc
Sometimes I discover a great new (to me) author/ TV show and sometimes I find it’s not my cup of tea but I appreciate the suggestions are given in good faith with the caveat YMMV.
CallMeKarma says
Love Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries. You will enjoy Wanted…
Catlover says
I binged Mystery Road and ended up enjoying it. I wasn’t too sure until after the second one. I’ve been thinking about Brit Box for my tv on the main floor. I have Acorn upstairs so haven’t watched it for ages. My dining room has been my painting space all summer. Just six cabinet doors to finish priming, painting and reinstalling Sewing projects coming up next so I’ll be upstairs again until January. The To Do List is shrinking 🙂
Hope you are all on the mend, nobody left to get sick now. Just one tip to everyone – dip your toothbrush in mouthwash to stop reinfecting yourself. My son taught me that, I used to get a tooth infection every few months and that stopped it.

If the murder mystery theme begins to pall, you could try Sharpe’s Rifles and the rest of the Sharpe’s series; Napoleonic war set in sunny Spain with Sean Bean as rifleman Richard Sharpe, with action, romance, humor and lots of great British actors. It’s a bit older, the first episode aired in 1993, so I don’t know if it ever gets shown anymore. Did I mention Sean Bean? LOVED watching him in those tight military trousers …. yummm … oh, sorry, I fuzzed out for a moment there 😉

Morris*Lewis*Endeavor – they always jump to the wrong conclusions and pretty serious
Grantchester- the main character is so full of angst about a girl and his position as pastor
Foyle’s War – Amazing but still pretty serious since its set in WWII
Broadchurch – Season 1 is trying to figure out who in the town murdered a little boy, Season 2 who murdered 2 girls and the trial of season 1 murder
Happy Valley – do not let the name fool you there is nothing happy about this show
Death in Paradise – actually has quite a bit of humor, much less dark than other series
Doctor Blake Mysteries – couldn’t even make it pass the first episode
Brokenwood (NZ) – cannot express how much I love this one. As a bonus love the soundtrack
Agatha Raisin – comedic and light hearted, for a murder mystery
Vera – just not that good in comparison to other i have watched
Scott & Bailey – less mystery more police procedural plus the drama that comes from sleeping with inappropriate people
Shetland – the tiny island aspect is interesting otherwise people die and it is always gray
Hamish McBeth – not every episode involves a murder or a serious crime so less murder mystery more humorous police procedural
Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries – 1920’s Australia, pretty humorous so I recommend if you are looking for something more light hearted
DCI Banks – so weird didn’t even make it past the first episode
Wallander
Hinterland – you just described this in you blog post, although to be fair it is Wales not England
Father Brown Mysteries – another light hearted option that I highly recommend
Poirot * (Miss) Marple – does it get any better than Agatha Christie

This is a great list, I’ve seen quite a few but some are still waiting for me to get to them.

Check a climate map and you’ll probably find much of western Europe and much of the Pacific Northwest are the same color. I remember that from when I was in school.
Ruth Ray says
Sorry but I grew up in Seattle area and lived for awhile in North Yorkshire. Seattle is grayer because the Cascade mountains stop the clouds. Great Britain mountains would be considered decent hills in the PNW. Also Great Britain is at a higher latitude so daylight season differences are greater. I found it even milder than Seattle.

I love those lists above! I have noticed that gray cast over some of those shows – it’s why the British crave sunlight and outdoors. My Mother is British and she was forever suggesting to someone “Why don’t you go sit in the Garden’ You just have to watch the American vs. the British Antiques Roadshow to notice the difference. On every British AR show they are in some Large House’s Garden – even if it means holding umbrellas over the paintings. “Well it’s just sprinkling a bit!”. I’ve never seen the American Version set up outside – they might take a field trip to look at something of interest, but by god they better have a roof!
I vote for Top of the Lake, a New Zealand mini series – OM! I knew Elizabeth Moss could act, but wow!
My new favorite, Ozark, love Jason Bateman and Laura Linney, sudden violence and I’m not a fan of violence, this show will take your breath away. So many of the characters are so strange, you start contemplating that perhaps there are some supernatural pockets in those hills!
Passive Entertainment as long as you have to hibernate, do have some distractions 🙂 !

That kind of thing can be worth saving. I have been researching non narcotic herbs that relieve pain lately. Anything but weed. I can’t stand the smell. Our neighbors used truly nasty skunkweed. Even with windows shut, it got in our apartment. I was so glad when the cops raided them and the awful stench was no more. So passionflower, corydalis etc. I’ve been digging out what alkaloids and chemicals are in them to check for interactions with my meds. I still have the most complete of my herbals. When I weeded the library and donated books, the beginner herbals went to the teaching wiccans I know. So I am wading through things. I have oxycodone I would rather not use. It comes down to what type of pain and what causes it. Anti inflammatory herbs vs analgesic vs counter irritants like liniments. Corydalis and Passionflower seem to work the best so far. I am taking notes. It all depends on why I am OW. Overdoing heavy gardening was my latest stoke of anti-genius. I am paying for it. Any ideas would be welcome.

Epsom salt in a hot bath is excellent for overworked muscles – also back pain.
Robin Moore says
I have a ten lb bag of Epsom Salts and Magnesium oil to rub on sore muscles, that’s Dead Sea Salts. . I was so stiff it made me a fall hazard. The Epsom Salts in a bath helped a lot. I heard that soap on the water can negate some of the Eposm Salts benefits. Not sure that is right, still looking. I am a human prune after repeat marinations in the tub. We were prying a large blueberry out of a whiskey barrel to divide it and re pot. It was root bound.
Jennifer says
How did you get the blasted thing to grow? Mine last a season and then don’t come back.?
You might try reiki or it’s cousins for the pain.
Robin Moore says
Well I use blueberry fertilizer, keep the soil acid, and when trying to divide it I used transplant shock solution soaks before painting with rooting hormone. Then plant and pray. I have had pretty good luck with rooting lavender and rosemary cuttings. I just cut at a nexus on the stem with more growth in different directions. Then stick them in damp earth and keep them damp. Not the recommended method, all kinds of special stuff are supposedly required. I stuck them in the pot and they grew.
Robin Moore says
i will check into reiki. I think one of my friends practices reiki. A lot of it is surgical adhesions. Getting those buggers stretched out is a constant work in progress. Use it or lose it. I belly dance for core exercise. I always keep a handhold near because my balance stinks. I probably look ridiculous, but I am fighting to regain what I could do before surgery. I have an alarm I set to remind me when I have sat too long. Every half hour get up and walk, put music on and read on my tablet while I march in place or whatever, just moving for a few minutes. I have a tablet holder that lets me get it at a comfy spot whether standing , sitting or laying down. I just started Sinner by Shayne Silver.

Not an immediate relief but a preventive: Yoga both strengthens muscles, including the core that supports your back, and makes you kinesthetically aware so you work with correct body mechanics. The breathing does help with pain too though. Those who haven’t tried it think it’s all about stretching, but that’s only one out of eight aspects of yoga. Strength and balance are equally as important. And saying you can’t do yoga because you’re not flexible enough is like saying you can’t lift weights because you’re not strong enough. Yoga is how you get better at it, and it’s all about listening to your body. It has saved me from falls and injury many times now.

I do Yoga. After surgeries I am fighting adhesions for a lot of it. I can still touch toes, but things like the child pose defeat me because one knee no longer bends as of last year. First storm and had my first arthritis flare. I work around it. I finally managed to adjust my sacral spine and the SI joint last night. I took muscle relaxers and propped pillows to take tension off and finally got things to move. Cow FAced Pose will take a while. I keep tipping over which is funny. Its more like the dying cow pose. I am tempted give a dying MOOOO every time.
Robin Moore says
I found that a really cushy yoga mat helps a lot. I found a 1″ thick memory foam one on Amazon. I use it for PT and yoga.
I set goals for a walk every day. Staying in the house was becoming a vice. I live next to Evergreen Washelli Cemetery. Its like a semi private park with dog walkers and beautiful landscaping. I wish there was a way to restore a lot of the historical tombstones. So much local history is there.
Lynn T. says
Ah, Robin. I know what you mean. What works for one person’s pain does not necessarily work for another person. You are smart to record what works for you and what does not.
Epsom salts bath does help me alot when I have physically overdone it. As does arculitherapy [ear lobe acupuncture]. But I have a sibling that arculitherapy does nothing for but regular acupuncture works. I do not have patience for acupuncture.
I agree with doing yoga. Just do what you can each day. It does not matter what all you do but that you do.
Robin Moore says
I go to sleep when getting acupuncture. Not so sure about its results so far. It is relaxing
I just finished doing floor exercises. stretches of various sorts, arches and listening to the muscles about how far to stretch and getting out of the stretches slowly. Then I climbed the furniture to stand up again. I worked on half lotus, arching, working with breath. Leg lifts for abs. Eventually this should fix things. PT is my new religion.
Mousewynne says
I hope you have a speedy recovery and a slow convalescence. Try to take your time getting back to work.
Robin Moore says
About laryngitis, when I was a kid and totally lost my voice. I was at home alone and bored. I discovered that I can do a perfect donkey bray when I have laryngitis and at no other time. Clench the throat and inhale while engaging the vocal chords, mouth open. Then do the same thing exhaling. I did that for hours for weirdness sake. I am easily amused I guess. The dog got the funniest look on his face when I did that. Maybe I was high on cough syrup. It gave me giggle fits.

I hope these pages provide distraction. Best wishes for your recovery ☆

Death in Paradise! People are murdered in droves but it’s almost always sunny. Plus it’s got humor. And it’s on Netflix.
njb says
+1 Enjoyed that one myself. Loved the characters and of course the background since it was filmed on the islands of Guadaloupe. But I lost interest when they killed off the first hapless Inspector. He was half the humor.
Petra says
get well soon and I can also recommend Death in Paradiese and Midsomer Murders as entertainment
Martina D. says
+1 for Midsummer Murders
I recommend Miss Fisher’s murders mysteries too

Get well soon, at least you showed your love by sharing!

It’s not a filter! Get Well Soon Lovelies.

Hope you heal up quickly. When I am sick I watch serial killer documentaries on Netflix mostly for ideas on how to get away with offing my hubby who is cheerful and loud. Don’t be cheerful and loud around sick people… it’s a thing. Amy I right?!
Zumbabear says
LOL @ Rowan. Yes You Are! LOL. Get Well soon, ALs
Robin Moore says
Oh God yes. I hate hearing people noisily rattling bags and packaging that dont just get what they needed. They eat out of the package and keep on rattling and making noise. It is times like this that I want an elephant gun.
Nayra says
Skoré uzdravenie (Slovak) or get well soon 🙂

Except I can do without the character of Rose.
Although I adore Rankle.
And is that one charaxter meant to be Norman Bates?
Regina says
I’m continually suprised by how many of my friends have been treated for respiratory ailments (Pnumonia. Bronchitis. Etc) and have been sent home with antibiotics, steroids, etc while still in mild to severe respiratory distress. Because most of them didn’t realize that it was an option at the time of their appointments, my friends have called the doctor’s office back and requested a nebulizer & solution or inhalers. The doctors have called them in to the pharmacy
-without exception.
Most people (and some doctors) don’t take shortness of breath seriously enough. It isn’t always respiratory failure that kills in a breathing emergency, it can be cardiac arrest resulting from the long term oxygen deprivation to the heart.
?If you can’t finish a sentence without
taking another breath, if you are gasping, or having multiple extended coughing jags with little reprieve
(productive cough or not), you are likely experiencing breathing distress and could benefit from medical/medication intervention.
*I’m sharing this because I lost a friend to Pnumonia. She was young, otherwise healthy, and pregnant. She died at home in the night propped up on the sofa. Her young husband found them in the morning. He buried her with their second (unborn) child in her arms. It was very sad.
AL’s & BDH please take good care of yourselves.
Breath is life.
Hugs, Regina
Cynthia says
Where do you and your friends live Regina. We dispense inhalers home with our respiratory patients.
Robin Moore says
I mentioned I had been short of breath and am now getting a sleep study. i don’t want one. I was SOB when I was awake, not sleeping. I had one before and I was fine. I am not looking forward to the electrodes being sort of braided into my hair. O well, I am going to wear an Eyore T shirt if I can find one in time that is suitably depressed.
Cynthia says
Sorry to hear that Robin, but you’ll do fine.
Belinda says
DON’T DIE!
:p
You have a hardier disposition than I, if you can stand to lie in bed and watch Lifetime. Personally, I go for the History channel……like five or six hours of “Ancient Aliens” . LOL
Cynthia says
Belinda, that’s my kind of entertainment.
Ceridwen says
No filters, it really is that blue/wet/misty when it is not sunny and bright or snowing, usually on the same day, there’s a reason the British are obsessed with the weather
Shona says
Lol. I was just about to say the same thing! No filters, the light is actually more grey/blue. Especially in winter. Not to say that there aren’t lovely days, they’re just… greyer.
Ruby says
Every year, I used to get a cold, which would quickly progress to sinusitis, then bronchitis, then near pneumonia at least once a year. Because of that, my doc recommended that I receive the pneumonia vaccine (Pneumovax or PPSV23) even though I didn’t quite meet the criteria for getting it prior to age 65 (http://www.immunize.org/catg.d/p2015.pdf). Since that time, I have had colds, but they none have progressed to chest infections. Miracle. Also, the flu is going around early this year, so get your flu shot when you’re better (if this isn’t the flu). You may cut me now.
Margaret R says
This will make you laugh. One angry kitty.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4T2Rt2kwHM
Lynn T. says
Yes, Margaret R. That was one pissed off cat. My 85 pound pup ran and hid. Actually in my personal opinion not funny as cat was protecting its domain. I had a Siamese that did that to apartment maintenance guys except he bit whatever he could lure into reach because he had been declawed as a young kitten before he was rescued and I ended up with him. The old no good deed goes unpunished saying.
That said I did feel sorry for the real estate lady showing house. Hopefully she was current for vaccines as was cat.
Robin Moore says
Our german shepherd was pestering my aunts cat. Then I heard him howling and yelping continuously. Then he bolted around the corner before I could go check. The siamese kitten was handing onto his heck with claws and its teeth were buried in his throat. He never bothered cats again. We couldnt catch him. The cat got bored after about 20 min and dropped off. dog went to hide under the bed.
Katherine says
Check out Murdoch on Acorn. It is a detective series set Toronto at the turn of the 20th century.
Margaret R says
I’m from Toronto and my husband and I love Murdoch, we play a “pretend” drinking game in which we pretend to down a shot every time they refer to a Toronto/Ontario landmark. “There’s been a disturbance on Spadina sir!” Drink!

Congratulations on Iron and Magic being Nominated in Best Fantasy 2018 in Good Read Choice!

My cat has laryngitis, I’ve told him he’s in good company. However he doesn’t seem have a respiratory illness, just no meow. I didn’t know cats could get laryngitis.

Hi Ilona
Sorry you are so sick.
If you want to watch a fun movie to help you recover I recommend a Russian movie (if you haven’t seen it) On Drakon (I am Dragon). It is a lovely movie, a romance but also a film about what it means to be human (with dragons in it!). You can find it on You Tube. Get well soon!

I feel I should defend my country but as I sit here in London with my thick jumper on and the radiator on full while looking out my front room window at the grey sky and the wind whipped trees….it’s difficult.
Ali Longacre says
Maybe you should switch to watching Anime.
Commsguy says
Well life in your house sounds just craptastic, I went through the pneumonia thrill ride and then the Senior Medaid recommended I get Pneumovax. It only protects from bacterial pneumonia but that’s half the battle, the only side effects that I had were soreness at the injection site but, as always, read the side effects disclaimers.
Since I have offered more unsolicited advice I am donning my Kevlar UnderArmor as I don’t want to get cut, its bad enough when I injure myself working on my daughters house!
Robin Moore says
The more you react to a vaccination, the better protected you will be. What you are feeling is the immune system cranking up and making antibodies etc..Yes, it sometimes feels like the flu. It passes and it is definitely better than catching the real thing.
Anna Stanford says
So sorry you are sick! Writing can wait, focus on getting well. I hope you feel better soon!
virginia says
England has very varied light, Yorkshire is bleak with big skies and London is often grey but Cotswolds is not. Crime series really worth watching is Lewis. Set in Oxford which is close to the Cotswolds, scenic. Also Inspector Montelbano set in Sicily has plenty of murders with subtitles.
Get well soon, embrace the illness and wallow a bit! (Servants help here)
Marianne says
Already voted for IRON and MAGIC as best book of the year for the Fantasy category on GoodReads. It is sure to win!! Hope you are able to sleep better, and that all of you feel better and are better soon! Being sick absolutely STINKS!!

Have you tried Agatha Raisin on Acorn? People are still dying in England left and right but in a more colorful and quirky way
Nadira says
Hope you both get better soon!
I do have to agree with the whole thing about the UK being filmed in blue grey filter, rugged hills, stormy seas and detective inspectors who take themselves too seriously but Broadchurch was fantastic and so is The Fall.
Vicki says
Been miserable for last week with head/chest cold sitting in chair to sleep. Do not really want cut but doterra peppermint headsets. Super duper burst of peppermint when bitten. Won’t cure but makes breathable so can sleep in chair better than nothing.
Claudia says
Get well soon!
Ruby says
So you’re now onto Broadchurch then…
