The Horde Has Spoken

Blog, Writing 201 Comments | POST A COMMENT October 26, 2026 by Ilona

::Looking over massive amount of BDH suggestions and questions::

Mod R helpfully summarized some of them for us.

Roughly 1 in every 3 comments and most of the people who sent emails made the request for more fiction over any other topic. New serial, snippets, bonus scenes, alternate character POVs, deleted scenes, short stories. They explicitly miss having a new installment to anticipate every week, or even every month.

We are going to try to reinstate the Fiction Serial.

For the new members of the Horde, we will be posting a rough draft of a story. It will be posted once a week (sometimes twice, but usually once.) It will contain grammatical errors and other issues that occur in the rough draft.

Once finished, the posts will stay up for a couple of weeks to let everyone catch up and then will be archived. The story will be then edited and published. The final may vary significantly from what you read on the blog. We try to keep the plot and the main scenes the same, but the final book might have more scenes and edited dialogue, etc.

The fun of the serials is that people get something to look forward to, they can freely discuss it in the comments, and the likes and dislikes of the readers influence the flow. If BDH loves a particular character, they will get more page time. For example, in The Inheritance, Elias evolved into a full fledged character because BDH went, “Ooooo!”

The downside of the serials is that it is the first draft. A lot of times you will be reading something that was written that morning.

First drafts are kind of fragile and easily murdered by harsh feedback. That means that we ask you to not be overly critical in the comments. You can’t create and edit at the same time. Comments like, “This is a waste of time. I don’t know why anyone would like this. I hate it” will be removed. It’s counterproductive to making words go.

Also, we have a lot of irons in the fire. There will be times when we have to skip a week, so we want to be clear that everyone goes into this with the understanding that there can’t be a meltdown if the post doesn’t appear on schedule.

We are not yet sure which serial will be happening. We are going to try and sketch a few ideas in the next couple of weeks and see which one goes. The serial has to be fun and easy to write because it is a bonus project. As cheesy as it sounds, we need to be inspired.

Contractual work is not always inspired. Sometimes it’s written because it needs to be written. I know for a fact that the readers can’t tell when something is very difficult to write and when something just fell out of you, but the serial cannot feel like slogging through mud for us. It must come from a place of fun and be low pressure, or we will quit writing it.

We are going to try to begin the serial sometime in November. We need to write ahead enough to make sure the concept makes sense and leave ourselves some breathing room.

Gordon is strongly in favor of a sequel to Inheritance. My fear is that it will grow. If you are new to our blog, the veteran Horde members will explain it in the comments. When I say something is a short story, people start hysterically laughing. We don’t really have room in our schedule for something that is too long. So please understand that the serial may go on for months and may not have a firm publication date.

So I am off to try to write some opening chapters with Gordon.

Writing Together

On that note, we have gotten the perennial question of how do we write together. We sit at the same desk like so:

I dictate, Gordon types. He often alters what I dictate as it goes onto the page because sometimes I dictate nonsense. If you like writing fiction, try dictating a scene. It feels very different from writing it, and it’s kind of hard to do. It’s a whole different skillset.

Funny story: one time we were at a convention – I want to say NY Comicon, for some reason – and we were on a panel with several SF and Fantasy writers. They asked us to do a story, where everyone add a little bit as it goes. So people start.

“He took his sword.”

“He went outside.”

And it comes to me and I’m like, “The sunset bled crimson on the mountain, the glowing orbs of the twin suns shining like raw wounds in the fabric of the heavens…”

The looks I got, hehehe. It wasn’t because I was that high speed; it’s just because I’ve trained myself to dictate. It requires an adjustment.

We don’t write scenes separately. Everything that goes into our books is the result of a compromise and a joint effort.

Each of us has separate strengths. I’m better with description. Gordon is better with natural dialogue. The mannerisms and romantic lines from the male POV are almost always coming from Gordon. So when Everard says something like “Use me. Let me be your shield,” or Erodel puts on his glove before the fight, that is Gordon in action. I tend to do the majority of female character lines.

We do fight scenes together. It is a very slow process with much reenacting and video watching. It usually takes all day for a two page fight scene.

We also have assistants.

As you can see, Tubby’s level of the Bulldog Sadness is epic. Tuna is doing his trademark, ‘You have worked enough” move.

The other two, Nykie and Batty, are asleep, so I didn’t take pics.

This year took three elderly pets away from us. It’s been a little difficult. We are down to two dogs and two cats. And that is all I will say about that.

So back to the subject, we write side by side, but we edit separately. Each of us takes an editorial pass, because editing by committee is impossible.

We are boring. We rarely have dramatic fights about writing, although we do occasionally throw fits, when things aren’t going well and neither one of us is sure what the problem is. Usually one of us declares that they are just done for the day and we quit and do something else while the story sorts itself out in the background.

So that’s that. We will have more fun stuff for you this week as Halloween draws near.

Thank you for this insight! I learned something new today about the process (yay). I’ve always been advised to read writing out loud, but never thought of dictating it to myself in rounds 1-3 (I do not have a battle buddy, as my darling fur child cannot and would not type even if she had thumbs).

Hi Gorden, Ilona and ModR (salutations are alphabetical, not in order of importance)

I did not comment on the suggestions blog, as I try to be a polite and p*tient member of the BDH, and I was considering suggesting a beach holiday with photos of feet in sand and colourful drinks shared, but I value my life and also my own ability to w*it.

But, and take this in the line of suggestions that I hope this will spark something interesting for you, since you mentioned the word **serial**, I can imagine Arabella’s story being presented in the form of a series of novellas, rather than a full-fledged trilogy, and those being serialised as time and other commitments allow. This would allow you to start anywhere after Beast Business that you feel like picking up her story. Augustine and Diana novellas, or Bern and Runa or any of the other HL characters would also be loved and devoured. Similarly, I can imagine that we would all give body parts for an Inheritance serial.

Personally, I am a major fan of Maud, Arland and Helen, and perhaps a serial of their own wedding shenanigans might tickle your fancy. I cannot imagine that Kate and Curran are really serial material, but if that gentle doubt sparks your need to prove me wrong, I would not be at all sad.

With the BDH here to provide you free and eager inspiration, I feel certain that you are overcome with inspiration 😂 But you would certainly have to sacrifice all sleep to keep up with the level of demand.

Maud’s wedding should be an easy short serial, right? Some ripper cushions and a little invasion by a mysterious dragon species. Not much to it.

Willing to negotiate about more Elias and Ada as well! Or Augustine and Diana!

When I lost both my grandpa and two cats within a year, I went slightly to pieces. Lasted two weeks, got a 16w old kitten from a farm and sat there on the couch. The kitten was hiding below the couch and crying for mummy for the first day and I couldn’t take it at all. So glad he was really big enough to to set out on his own and not miss mum for long – he stopped crying at all after the second day and was snuggling up to me by the end of the first day – don’t know how people can take home 10-12w old kittens! But yeah, losing pets can be so hard. Still, zero regrets, cats for life 😀

    If you still count votes:
Inheritance… as it has finally a mature female able fighter who does NOT swoon (one of the reasons I am not that much of a fan of the Hidden Legacy books, Catalina’s books the least of them)

I hope for more of her in action, but also interaction with her kids. And the dog…. It feels like RL reactions, descriptions in a way (if there would be a situation like that), way more mature, natural, way less over the top ❤️-reactions like so (too) often in other books.

It’s actual my number 1 book (of authors still alive, not comparable to me with author’s of the e.g. 19” century, as the styles are not comparable in general), followed by the Kate Daniels series / world. Then a few other authors, then back to IA:

As I see the overlap to Innkeeper and there is still so much to find there (parents, the bad behind al that, invasion, wedding, hints on why Dina’s Lees might be the enemies of Ada’s Lees), I actually see that too as something to be exited about, but prefer early Maud over early Dina slightly.

Not meant as a ‘demand’, just to give a little insight into one reader, if at all interested into such things.

I am excited for more serial, and promise that I will be patient and enjoy as it comes, because I understand what words like “bonus” and “other things come first” mean.

My first hope is always for more Arabella POV, but Inheritance is awesome, and an Innkeeper interlude would be awesome, and … well, there’s probably not much that wouldn’t be awesome. See also first paragraph.

Such a treat you offer to give us something fun to experience in a serial format. Winter is long here in Indiana. Thank you for your engagement with us readers so kind and thoughtful! Someone said they second Gordon’s vote… that made me ponder… what if you did a short story from Elias’ POV, as you did a bit in the book?

Not concurrent with the Inheritance but in a bit between it and the sequel (or in line with the sequel)? Maybe as he’s trying to figure out what’s going on with Ada and Bear… she’s assigned to his team for a breach and he re-arranges it so HE is on the team and they fight together…. just a suggestion trying to fan those creative flames… You probably already have something roughed out and are laughing while rubbing your hands together in maniacal glee.

This is a great idea, but hard to put into a RPGLit type of genre, I suspect. I was one of the Horde going “oooo” over Elias, so any continuation of that obvious, eventual ship (Elias/Ada) would be appropriately devoured. I mean, after all, they have similar “pets” providing no end of hilarity.

Was Gordon afraid that the serial would grow into a full-fledged novel or that his preference would grow? I would love both.

A weekly serial would be awesome.

“Life right now™ ” has been stressful lately.

I would LOVE The Inheritance 2.

But if you don’t feel like it, then maybe Wilmington Years 3?

The new YA secret story (the one with the girl and the magic dog the evil step mom killed) feels more like a full-length-book type story (like Maggie) . It doesn’t feel like a weekly serial kind of story.

But like my mom always says to me:
    “Don’t overthink it.”

We are the BDH and whatever you give us we will inhale it in a second and demand the next part immediately.

I would hope for it to be fun and inventive for you rather than an obligation. Yes we’re the Book Devouring Horde, but we also strive to be like the polite dragon you describe Rogan as. =) I usually achieve chalant, but once in a while… well, Mod R could tell you I failed in that while waiting for Beast Business’ audio version. Loved this explanation of how you team up to write side by side! I was so curious and puzzled how that was possible. During my career as an archeologist, I, and sometimes another colleague or two, would write technical reports and they would be peer reviewed. I had no idea how a team could write together and do it so cohesively on the same paragraph/chapter/book. A technical report is easy to assign sections to, a novel and the descriptive creativity, subject expertise on hundreds of topics, and dialogue would have stumped me and a teammate trying to write it at the same time and in the same physical space.

Thanks tremendously for bringing us another amazing serial to follow. Can’t wait to enjoy it, and I greatly appreciate your gift to us. Take care of yourselves and don’t overdo. We are often demanding and inpatient, but we care about you two. Sorry for the losses of your beloved pets— may their memories bring you comfort and warmth.

I’m so sorry for the loss of your pets. I know how hard it is.

My heart horse, Divinity died last Dec. My room in this house was designed to look out onto her paddock. We’ve lived here for 27 years, Vin was 7 when we moved here, much of the farm was built around her. For 26 years, the first thing I did when I opened my eyes in the morning was look at Vin. There is a maple that starts to turn red this time of year in her paddock. So often, the first sight of my morning was her grazing by that tree. Yesterday was my birthday, first thing in the morning I woke up and looked out into Divinity’s paddock, instead of Vin, the lambs were grazing by her tree, it just starting to change color. It hit me like a ton of bricks.

I’m so excited for more Inheritance. I actually just listened to it yesterday as my comfort listen on a hard day.

Thank you for your suggestions 🙂 . At the moment, although they have considered it, House Andrews are not comfortable with a Patreon project model, due mainly to reader accessibility and feeling that pressure of delivering, instead of the pleasure they talk about in the post. The Book Devouring Horde is international, and what might feel like a modest contribution of “a few dollars” to some is a princely sum to others.

I love it! I did not ask for this, as I was afraid of overworking you, but I’m glad for it all the same. Just like Omelyana, we BDH live for the crumbs of your writing.

Oh my wow! I don’t even read the serials and I’m excited 😊 A new series means a new book and I just love seeing the chapters go by despite my willful ignoring of them.

I have been a Horde member for a looooong time and I don’t know that I’ve ever known about your actual writing technique. That’s so cool! I knew that you wrote everything together, but not how. In the words
    of the almighty Spock- fascinating.
Follow-up question-does the process change for Curran/Rogan’s/whoever’s POV?

The Curran and Rogan POVs were written by Gordon, with Ilona editing 🙂

Also, every time I reread Ruby Fire, I remember what an awful time you had writing it. Still one of my favorites. Catalina and Alessandro are right up there w Sean and Dina for Couples I’d Want to Hang With vs. Couples I Love to Read about from Afar

A new serial! *rubs hands in glee*

Would greatly appreciate a sequel to inheritance since I am now a protagonist in her 40’s but I love all your stories.

    I have a question.

    (Spoiler Warning)
I was just rereading TKWNKM, I’m at the part where Everard is flying back to Selva and I was curious if he took any soap with him? Did Maggie offer him some? Did he yoink one, or is he using gorefish blubber soap?

Much gratitude over any piece of fiction you freely give us 🙂

I like Gordon’s idea! It could be short. Or a novella. *rubs hands together enthusiastically* Not that I’ve been waiting for the next Inheritance or anything. Pining away, maybe…

Love your stories. Keep telling them, please!

I had been hoping to mention this and this seems the perfect thread! I just finished listening to GA Sweep with Me and I really wanted to hear the story of the driefen lord’s ascension, complete with the saving the little creature by beating the teethy one with a stick.

I am so incredibly excited about a new serial! I loved inheritance and the galactic bachelor! Maggie is probably off the table… but inheritance 2 would be awesome! or even some crossover with George and Ada interacting… that would be sweet! or some more Derrick and Julie? Anything you can give is really, anything at all. even new stuff. we love it all!

Squeee! I am so excited! I love the serials and if it’s an inheritance sequel and goes on forever with no end or pub date in sight, I’ll be in bliss. If it’s short (ha!) I’m ok with that too. I’ll just reread it more. thanks very much from the bottom of my horde heart!

That is so nice of you guys! I admit it has been hard to go so long without Maggie snippets and fun side paragraphs (I know Tor doesn’t give you guys much leeway on that), so this is a dream come true. Whatever you guys choose to move forward with will be awesome, I can’t wait!

My sympathies for the loss of your pets. I am so sorry.

The Horde is here for whatever you write! But I will put in a pitch for Inheritance or Innkeeper.

I love sharing those stories with my younger cousins and feel safe doing so as they’re what I would consider “PG-13.” HL and KD world is too R-rated for the younger fam.

Love your process! I’ve wondered for a while how you do it because I’ve heard of different methods people write together/co-write.
The serial sounds like it’ll be fun! I love how people laugh when you say you’ll do a short story. 🙂
