Hi everyone,

House Andrews are on holiday this week and what most of us wished for them has come true: they have entered vacation mode!

Which I wish for all of us this weekend.

Oh to be a baby duck falling asleep in a sunray! No worries, no troubles, just quack-quack.

They’ve shared with me that they have had a very productive week creative-wise, and made progress on several projects. Apparently, allowing overworked brains a bit of rest and some sun works wonders on creativity, who could have guessed that? ::silly face:: I kid because I love.

No Innkeeper instalment this week, but I will be in the comments if you have any questions about Sweep of the Heart or anything else you want to know once House Andrews are back.

    • Iā€™m currently watching my elderly, disabled cat blissfully sleeping in the sunshine. Therapeutic for both of us in different ways. Iā€™ve also enjoyed some fresh air and winter sunshine in my part of Australia this morning so definitely understand the benefits of sunshine and less stress. I hope HA continue to enjoy their holiday.

  6. Can we get a yarn/crafting update? As I get into knitting myself, I appreciate seeing her projects and hearing her thoughts as someone with much more skill.

    • I enjoy those too very much. Having a creative time does not only have to mean plans for books, can be knitting as well! Though… Gordon knitting?

        Kdrama suggestions:
        Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (aka Goblin) – This is a good example of a fantasy storyline x comedy x relationships (but not a sexy romance you’d get in the Western world) and some beautiful Korean style visuals. Those who were blown away by the (newer to them) cinematography of Parasite would have expected certain styles if they watched a lot of KDramas. There’s also plenty of product placement/in-episode ads sponsorships which Kdrama watchers also learn to expect. Can be viewed on viki.com from the US
        I enjoyed Vincenzo on Netflix last year. Runs more towards the absurd without turning too campy. Bit of a heist x corruption x action/drama/comedy. I’ve almost convinced my partner to watch this just based on a former mob boss being saved by pigeons.
        Hotel Del Luna is a fantasy ghost story with amazing costumes and a very strong woman. Like Goblin, it spans multiple periods. This time the woman is the powerful older but young appearing one while the male lead is the younger human.
        Crash Landing On You was very popular with the 30+ age group. Has the romance angle, a real life couple (now married) as the leads, and North vs South Korea storyline with good comedic timing to lighten the heaviness.
        King The Eternal Monarch with Korean mega star Lee Min Ho was also rather popular internationally.
        Most of these are on Netflix. Viki and Kocowa in the US have a good selection of Asian dramas.

        Korean Drama, Chinese Drama, and Japanese Drama each have their own different “flavors” and while you can have similar tropes (or even the same actual show done in different languages), the characters will be interpreted differently. It can be easier to describe their current popular tropes and my current annoyances with them.

        If you enjoy “Candy” romance where an innocent and spunky woman who is all that is positive, but poor, redeem an a-hole tycoon or school prince, try more recent Chinese dramas or Korean ones about 5-7 years ago.
        Harem or reverse harem style romance was also popular between the two on about the same timelines.

        A portion of Kdrama trends have moved on to stronger women, some obvious and some not as aggressive but strong in their own way, though there’s still a good bit of being saved by the male hero. Still, some of them save themselves which is a nice change. I think this trend may swing back a bit in a year or two, especially with dramas meant for an older audience, as the recent president belongs to a conservative party and soft power can influence a lot.

        Japanese Drama romances and comedies – actors tend to have certain overacting styles. I think this might be expected by domestic audience? I find there are more zany plots and the cold shoulder older male romantic turning point is some type of head pat, back hug, or “where’d that come from” kiss to show returned affections.

        Most Asian dramas are not Western sexy.

      • I’ve had to interact with rude sale associates today. I don’t remember life being so difficult and people seeming so very angry and unhappy. I’d love to see the inn eat a few people and I can’t wait for the sea serpent eat a few angry trees people.

    • There has been no talk of abandoning the Iron Covenant series, so yes, there will be future books šŸ™‚

      However, House Andrews have decided they will not be announcing projects and deadlines until they have the book/project finished, as per https://ilona-andrews.com/2022/on-being-difficult/ , so I do not have any exact information for you:

      In the past, we always shared with you what we were working on. Thatā€™s not working so well anymore, because no matter what we choose to work on, someone is always unhappy that we are not working on the thing they like the most. From now on, we will be like Beyonce dropping her surprise album. We will quietly work and then go, ā€œHere it is, all done!ā€

      We both want to work at our own pace and take our time. We donā€™t want the stress of not meeting a deadline. If we donā€™t meet one, nobody has to know. When things are ready to be published, they will be up on the Release Schedule. We will announce them on the blog and in the newsletter. The retailers will also notify you of availability. We got this.

      • This brings to mind when I worked for a computer company. The salespeople weā€™re sternly warned, ā€œDO NOT SELL FUTURES!ā€ This makes sense because the getting new technology to market always takes longer than one wants and is not as fast, big, great as one predicts.

      • On a lot of their teas, they have a ā€œsampleā€ option. That way you can try, but not jump in the ā€˜deep end of the poolā€™, though the pool would be ok lately. ????

      • I love the Herbal Hot Cinnamon Spice from H&S, can’t speak to the regular one as I only drink herbal tea. Other teas I let steep for at least 6 minutes, but with this one I only do 5 as it’s too strong if I leave it in longer. It’s delicious and full bodied (if that makes sense). If you decide to take the plunge, maybe only steep it for 3 – 4 minutes & see how you like it. You can always put the bag back in. I love cinnamon in general so YMMV.

        Thanks for all your awesome work! I love your posts & enjoy how you interact with the fandom. I’m sure it’s a relief for HA to know you’re taking care of the blog while they’re away. Glad their getting some R&R and recharging their creative batteries! šŸ™‚

      • Their cinnamon tea is really delicious. I use a vanilla syrup to sweeten it and then drink it hot or cold. Just wish they had a better selection of decaf teas.

    I had asked this in another blog post and now cannot see how to find if anyone answered so am asking again now and will keep this up to see if it is answered…

    Where is the back story located about how Sweep folks met folks from the Edge? I know there is a blurb giving backstory in the Sweep serial about some of what has been happening since then but how did I miss them MEETING in the first place? And how the universes overlap/travel between etc. I appreciate any insight and sorry if its a dumb question!

    • Hey Lara,

      Not a dumb question at all- what you want is the Sweep in Peace Prologue, which will explain the link. (Klaus DeMille is Dina and Maud’s brother.)

      George and Jack also make a cameo in Clean Sweep, but not much is explained there šŸ™‚

      I’m on hand to explain further if you have any questions about what you read, just comment under any post, I’ll see it šŸ™‚

      • It is Sweep In Peace that connects the dots bewteen the DeMilles and George, and all the other connections …

        PS – glad that they are featuring Gaston in this book (Sweep of the Heart). He is such a fun character, and I had a great-uncle Gaston from Louisianna … I like to imagine that he was a swash-buckling rogue like our Gaston.

    • There are a couple initial meetings.

      Dina sees George and Jack in Baha Char (sorry if my spelling is off – Iā€™m on my phone.). I think thatā€™s in the first or second innkeeper book.

      There is also a snippet, not in the books, where Claus (Dinaā€™s brother) recruits George to be an arbitrator.

      The two worlds (Dinaā€™s earth and Georgeā€™s earth) are VERY similar, and can not be traveled between easily. Dina explains this in Sweep in Peace. They have to go thru Baha Char (or other) – direct, non-stop, travel doesnā€™t seem possible.

      • The bit where Klaus recruits George is in the books šŸ™‚ , it’s the prologue to Sweep in Peace!

    Question/clarification for you on the Elara stuff you mentioned in the previous blog post:

    I get the Teddy Joe reference. I (think ) I know the scene youā€™re talking about, no problem there.

    But are you *also* saying we should be able to figure out the chicken thing? Bc I always thought we did NOT have that info anywhere. I thought maybe, in a future book, weā€™d find out. But are you saying the explanation is there now? In what has already been published?

    • What I said was that all 3 mysteries, including the chicken joke, “can be figured out from the books and free fiction made available so far”. I stand by it šŸ˜›

      I never said it was easy, though. Google is very much your friend šŸ˜€

  24. The spoiler post got me wondering again (maybe more a question for Ilona): What was the story of the originally planned Julie trilogy? After finishing Magic Triumphs in 2018 House Amdrews had planned to continue with Julie but due to a lot of fans hating her (so sad and am really sorry that happened back then!), it was put on hold. Was any of its intended content connected to the King of Fire and what happened with Moloch? Or about the 4 years before that when she and Erra first went to LA and then continued on? Ilona had said that Yu Fong had been planned to appear and I would really love to know how this tied into the backstory we got in Blood Heir.

      I *can* tell you that House Andrews have stated before that it was never going to be about Julie and Erra’s adventures together, it would have no romantic arc and it’s just not something they were interested in or planned for.

  25. I hope the vacation is awesome! I think it’d be fun to have a poll for the BDH on what pest/ natural disaster/ etc is a deal breaker when choosing where to live! Based off of conversations regarding scorpions, ‘palmetto bugs’, snowstorms. Etc.

Iā€™m nearly at the end and so far Iā€™ve discovered 8 new authors, bought umpteen new books (so awesome when you discover a new series and can slurp down the entire thing in one go) and Iā€™ve happily passed on those recommendations elsewhere to people who I think would like them. Very happy.

  29. Iā€™m a big fan of doing not your normal. Itā€™s important. Taking collage classes? Take one that has nothing to do with your major atleast once a year. Sit in front of a computer for work? Go to a park. Write books? Go to an amusement park. The hard part is not feeling guilty about it. Itā€™s okay not to do your normal. Itā€™s healthy. Itā€™s helps your normal. If Gordon and Ilona decided to take a ā€œdonā€™t do shitā€ day once a week Iā€™d be first in line to give them a hug, pack them a lunch and swat their hands away from the computers/pens and pencils.

    • Brain breaks are necessary for mental health and I hope they are having fun and not frying too badly. I always took one fun course per quarter in college for just that purpose. I was an Animal Science/pre Vet major and I had classes in Country Dance, Folk Dance, Archeology, Astronomy, Bird watching, and Bowling. (I never got to go on the condor counts though). I did just finish the reread of Fated Blades. I do enjoy that universe as well. It could be full of endless possibilities for short stories too.

  37. Hi what is the explanation for. Distribution of mass?
    For exampleif a human turns into a bat, they must be one very large bat or many many bats ,because ā€¦distribution of mass.
    So how does Arabella become a huge Monster of Cologne?

    • The distribution of mass stuff assumes the same law applies in the HL universe as they do in, say, Discworld. However we haven’t seen Great A’Tuin show up in the HL ‘verse, so perhaps we can call the inconsistencies even.

    Sorry Mod R (and those BDH in England) that you are facing the hot weather there. Fans, air conditioning (if you have it), lots of ice, drink water with electrolytes in them, and anything else to keep you cool. Wash cloths with cold water on them will also help on the face and the back of the neck. If you are near the sea, that might help too. šŸ™‚

  44. Dina has always made a point of having every guest confront a picture of missing parents. Given the new hallway, did she do this for these latest guests? On one hand I know finding her parents signal the end of the series, but on the other, Dina needs a hug from her Mum and Dad!

    I meanā€¦ in the precious book there was this *huuuge* cliffhanger with the tag on the cat (I forgot the name *sorry*)ā€¦ And now the cat doesnā€™t even seem to live in the inn anymore?

    I mean, I love the storyline, but I thought that she finally got a lead, but there is no mentioning at all about that – or did I miss something?

      First thing first, Olasard still lives and thrives at the inn ( he’s mentioned in several chapters of Sweep of the Heart, like Chapter 15 https://ilona-andrews.com/2022/chapter-15/ for example)

      Secondly, this clue everyone remembers with the cat’s tag…it was just Dina’s off-handed guess! The name Sebastien North in NOT on the tag, only the initials S.N.- which could correlate with the hint the Archivarius gave, or could be about so many other things. It’s not that much of a clue šŸ˜€ !

  56. I have a random question that Iā€™ve been wondering about ever since I reread Fated Blades recently: why is Kinsmen a proper noun but seco is not? I love how much thought House Andrews puts into world building, and Iā€™m sure this was intentional. However I just love hearing about their reasoning.

    • So “kinsmen” isn’t capitalised in Fated Blades (or any other of the books in the series), so I’m not sure what you’re referring to regarding it being a proper noun…It is the generic descriptor for the collective of people whose enhancements were biological and now get genetically transmitted from one generation to the next. “Seco” is also a common noun, it denotes a type of weaponised force field.

      There is only 1 instance out of 42 mentions of the word in which “kinsman” is used as a form of address, for a specific person, functioning as an honorific “As you said, Kinsman Baena, we are temporary allies”. This is a clue for the extremely formal tone of the context (aka: Ramona is not having it).

      Hope I understood the question correctly šŸ™‚

  60. I have always been curious about this; can Rogan and Nevada speak telepathically? I mean he can pick up her thoughts and project to her. So could Nevada concentrate on a question and then Rogan could project a chalkboard in her mind with the answer written on it?

    • I will add it to the House Andrews question list!

      From the text clues, we can see that he is a weak telepath (he needs the whammy of an Aucubens Examplar amplification circle and weeks of prep), as his telepathic gift is a side effect of his tactile talent (he can make one feel touched).

      “This particular circle took two weeks of work. Iā€™d prepared it for a previous problem I had to deal with, but it resolved itself, so I planned to use it for Adam Pierce. Since Adam wasnā€™t around, his groupie was the next best thing.” from Rogan’s POV of Burn for Me, Part 2 https://ilona-andrews.com/2017/rogan-burn-for-me-pov-part-2/

      and

      “Iā€™m a weak telepath. My telepathy is the by-product of my being a tactile, and besides, Acubens Exemplar took weeks to set up. It was left over from another venture I was involved in. Using it completely drained me.” from Chapter 14 of Burn for Me.

      Compare that to his usual power demonstrations: this requires so much more effort from him for such little payback!

      He mostly projects/picks up things from her in an uncontrolled way, when he’s stressed:

      ā€œI project when Iā€™m under stress. The moment I pass out, my mind will react and try to purge all this shit from my head so I can rest. Iā€™ll project while unconscious and youā€™re exhausted. You have no defenses. If youā€™re still here, you wonā€™t be yourself. Youā€™ll be me. You wonā€™t know where you are or what youā€™re doing. I need you to go now, Nevada.ā€ in Chapter 13 of White Hot.

      We see this when he shares his nightmares with Nevada (the first time he exhaustedly fell asleep in the Baylors’ kitchen and the second time when he’s unconscious in the cistern after he battles Howling- both in White Hot).

      I have to say these don’t *sound* particularly fun, but it is a special relationship between them. He also picks up random mental feedback from her, like seeing dragons when she’s around because that’s Neva’s image of him in her mind.

      So it would be interesting to know if that’s something they can work on and advance or if the parameters so far are the limitations šŸ™‚

  61. So happy House Andrews is getting a good break that gives them space to be creative. I did a reread of Sweep of the Heart and was reflecting on how good their writing is. The plots! The character development! The humor! The intrigue! I can only imagine how much energy and commitment this takes. Hope they really sink into vacation mode.

    • Maybe medical healing is not an expressed magic type? Rogan’s medical staff — Dr. Arras, etc, — are all non-mages. So if the multi-billionaire, control-freak Rogan doesn’t have a med-mage on staff, then I’m guessing they don’t exist.

  73. I’m having a great day today! I moved the first of May and I finally found my silverware this morning! So happy, no more trying to cook with plastic utensils then washing them up by hand. I was still enroute with the cats when the truck got unloaded. I’m celebrating this weekend by rereading all the chapters and possibly actually remembering the story line.
    Happy vacation to the Andrews family may they rest and do exactly what they want for the rest of their time off and return refreshed.
    Mod R the “shipping” post made me laugh which was greatly appreciated at this point. I usually giggle my way through those posts.     In my world, my 79 senile demented mother fell in my sisters shower Monday. Not her remodeled just for her shower with all the handicapped rails etc. sigh so itā€™s been a week of comfort reading of The Edge series for me while medical people argue with insurance people about short term stay in a skilled caregiver facility.

The new audio version ends with Sean leaving, and when I went back to check my Clean Sweep copy, it ended there too – am I crazy, or has something changed?

  82. Caldenia and Kosandion belong to an extended family that has been selecting the genes of their children for what sounds like a very long time. In Earth years, what is their expected life span? I would think longevity is one of the first things such a family would select for.

  84. I am a long time fan, starting with Magic Bitā€™s when first published. I bought it at a Barnes & Noble on a whim as it was categorized as science fiction and I almost never read sci-fi. I have bought every book published in all series. I like the stories, but itā€™s the romance that fuels my devotion. Weā€™re in Chapter 17 and I have to ask where is the romance? This feels like Dina and Sean in middle age. The story is good, but I miss the moments that smolder.

  86. If the Inn can create a kitchen, pantry, bedrooms, auditoriums, dining halls, stadiums, and various other magic, why can it not create a medbay and kit?

    • For the same reason why weapons, and precise gastronomical utensils (like Orro’s coagulator) have to be brought in. There is a difference between synthesising walls and furniture and creating high technology.

      The Inn also needs the materials it uses for the regular rooms too, although it can synthesise those in a pinch:

      “Garbage in, garbage out. The inn occasionally requires raw materials like wood, for example, or fabrics. Usually this happens when the innkeeper wants to conserve the innā€™s resources or during the times when time is of the essence. Itā€™s faster to feed a load of marble to the inn then for the inn to synthesize it out of something else. The items that an inn could find at a landfill are likely to be tainted by chemicals. The wood would rot quickly. ā€œCleaningā€ and absorbing the core materials from a landfill would take a lot of energy and defeat the purpose of trying to save resources in the first place.       The Innkeepers are pack rats. Because of the Inns’ opening to the Universe, they have had access to technology for a long time. A lot of the things we see in the series aren’t made by Gertrude Hunt on the spot, but things Dina had squirreled away šŸ™‚

  87. Just finished a reread of Maudā€™s book and it reminded me of a question. Otubar is Arlandā€™s step-father correct? What happened to his father? Do we know? Or is Otubar his father and they only refer to him as consort and Ileminaā€™s husband in deference to her position?
