Don’t forget we will be there at Spicewood Branch of Austin Library tonight at 7:00 pm.

@ilona_andrews if Americans get a snippet for #ComeyTestimony, shouldn’t us Brits get one for #May being elected PM? This is stressful!
This snippet wasn’t supposed to be posted until next week, but the UK peeps are upset that May was elected as PM.
###
“When Baranovsky choked on his own blood and collapsed, nobody helped him,” I said. “Nobody screamed. Hundreds of Primes turned and calmly started walking toward the exit, because the mansion would be locked down and they didn’t want to be inconvenienced.”
I waited a moment to let it sink in.
“Primes won’t care that you are young. They won’t be kind. They will try to use us, manipulate us, or destroy us. You could be standing in the middle of the Assembly, and if a Prime summoned a pack of wild wolves to rip you to pieces, I’m not sure anyone would help. This would be our life.”
Their faces were grim. I was losing them. I expected that Mom wouldn’t be on my side, but I had to at least convince my sisters.
“But if we do this, we can build up our strength for three years,” I said. “Victoria is coming for us now. Right now. She’s in town. The only reason she isn’t attacking us is because Rogan’s people are fortified around us. She’d have to go through them, and she doesn’t want to start a fight with House Rogan unless she has to.”
“Pack your bags,” Mom said. “The five of you are leaving.”
“Mom?” Arabella stared at her. “We can’t leave.”
“Out of the question.” I knew she would react like this.
“I’m not quitting college,” Bern said.
“We aren’t leaving you!” Catalina’s voice spiked. “We are not abandoning you and Grandma!”
My mother put steel into her voice. “You heard me.”
“Where?” Grandma Frida asked, her voice so high, it sounded broken.
Mom turned to her.
“Where can you send them so that bitch doesn’t find them, Penelope? She knows what they look like. She knows their names. She knows their social security numbers. She can pull the truth out of anyone she meets. Where on the planet can you find a place where her money and power won’t reach?”
“Mom,” my mother said quietly, looking stunned.
“I told you twenty- six years ago that if you married him, you would pay the price. I told you to let him go. You didn’t listen. You raised them to fight. They’re not going to cut and run now.”
“They will do what I say,” Mom ground out. “I’m their mother.”
Grandma Frida squinted at her. “Aha. And how did that work out for me?”
Mom opened her mouth and clicked it shut.
“What’s involved in becoming a House?” Catalina asked.
“At least two of us will have to undergo the trials and register as Primes,” I said. “Most likely it will be you and me.”
My sister frowned. “What if I don’t qualify?”
“I’ll do it!” Arabella announced.
“No,” everyone said at the same time.
“Why not?”
“You know why not,” my mother said. “Don’t make me pull that documentary out again.”
My sister took a deep breath. Uh- oh.
“I’m not going to spend my life hiding. Nobody will ever see what I can do!” She pounded her small fist on the table. “I’m going to qualify.”
My mother’s face told me that I had to fix this fast or she would snap and try to send everyone into exile again.
“You can control your magic,” I said.
“Yes!” Arabella said.
“We know this but nobody else does. People are afraid, because the last person with your magic went crazy. The only way they’ll accept you is if all of us demonstrate that you have complete control over yourself, and we, as a family, have complete control of you. This takes time. If you give us these three years, by the end of it we’ll be established as a House. And then, at eighteen, you can qualify.”
“Nevada!” Mom snarled.
“But this also means that for the next three years all of us will be in the limelight,” I continued. “And you have to stop acting like an impulsive brat.”
“Yes,” Catalina piled on. “No more angry outbursts, no more screaming, no more punching people, or starting stupid shit on Twitter.”
Arabella crossed her arms on her chest. “Fine. But you promise me! You promise me right now that if I behave, I’ll qualify in three years.”
“I promise.”
My mother punched the table.
“So that’s where she gets it from,” Bern observed.
“What’s the alternative?” Grandma Frida asked Mom.
“Not getting locked away for life, where they would keep her constantly sedated,” Mom growled.
“There are some other formalities,” I said. “Everyone who is qualifying will have to give a DNA sample, so they can make sure we are all related. We’ll have to submit some paperwork, they will set the date for the trials, then we are tested, and if we qualify, we become a House.”
“That’s it?” Leon asked. “Yes.”
I put my hand on the stack of paperwork. “If we decide to do this, that’s it. There is no backing out.”
“What if we don’t qualify?” Catalina asked. “We’ll look like idiots who wanted to be Primes and fell short. Nobody would do business with us again.”
“We’ll qualify. I’m a Prime and so are you.”
“They might not even know what my magic is,” she insisted. “What if I permanently affect people? What if— ”
“Oh shut up,” Arabella told her. “You made an army of hired killers sit on the floor and listen to your story like they were in kindergarten. And they’re all fine now.”
“I want to register as well,” Bern said. “Maybe not as a Prime, but the last time they tested me, I was ten. I’m stronger now.”
Leon dramatically collapsed on the back of his chair. “Rub it in, all of you. You and your magic. I’ll just sit here with my dud self.”
I opened my mouth and shut it. Now wasn’t the time to spring it on him.
“Nevada, there has to be another way,” Mom said.
“I don’t know what that is,” I told her. “And neither does Rogan. If I knew of another way, I would take it, Mom. I promise you, I would. This is the only way we can keep all of us safe.”
“If we do this, we’ll never be safe,” Mom said.
“Things will never be the same if we do this.” That wasn’t exactly a response to what she said, but I had to keep going. “Which is why we have to vote as a family. We all share responsibility for this decision. Once we make it, nobody complains and everyone has to work together. Does anyone want to add anything?”
Silence.
“Everyone for becoming a House, raise your hands.” I held my hand up. Bern, Arabella, Leon, and Grandma.
“Everyone for running away and hiding?” Mom raised her hand. I looked at Catalina.
“I’m abstaining,” she said.
“You don’t get to abstain,” Arabella said. “For once in your life, make a decision!”
Catalina took a deep breath. “I vote for the House.”
“Fools,” my mother said. “I’ve raised a pack of idiots.”
“But we’re your idiots, Aunt Penelope,” Leon said.
I picked up the paperwork bristling with colored flags indicating signature lines. “I need all of you to sign.”
“Wait!” Grandma Frida grabbed her phone. “We must take a picture for posterity.”
They crowded into the shot around me. Grandma Frida set the phone on a delay and it snapped an image of all of them around me, the paperwork in front of me, a pen in my hand. Cold froze my stomach. I loved them so much. I just hoped I made the right call.
Robin C says
Ooooh. So Arabella isn’t a complete unknown. Yay! And also, oh geez! Poor Leon, somehow I get the feeling he’s going to twig to his magic somehow before Nevada tells him and the fallout will be EPIC.
Nifty says
I’m listening to White Hot again from the beginning and heard something that seemed prescient:
Nevada says: “This job would affect the entire family. They had the right to know the risk. Besides, experience proved that keeping secrets when you were a Baylor didn’t work. Sooner or later all your hidden schemes exploded into the light, and then there was hell to pay and hurt feelings.”
The first couple times I read/heard this, I didn’t think much of it, but it seems particularly ominous in light of the secret Penelope and Nevada are keeping about Leon’s magic. As you say, the fallout , when he discovers it, could be EPIC.
SJ says
Yep. I scared about what is being set up with Leon too.
Nanik says
Me too..
Jenette says
Indeed. And it will be compounded by the fact that that he’s a fifteen-year-old boy who’s still trying to “find” himself. Here’s hoping it turns out better for him than it did for Gavin Waller. Maybe this is Rogan’s chance to step in and help, like he couldn’t do for Gavin?
Aidan says
I like this theory!
Laurence says
Me too!
Dawn says
They keep saying only one job for people like him and they are so against it. Assasin? Is that the kind of job he would excel at with that magic? At first I thought military but the fam is so against it and they are a military family…just speculating until July 25…
Amy says
Yea, that’s how I feel. His job is seeing the potential target for killing. They’re already in the military so I don’t get it. And on top of that, his self-esteem has to be plummeting because he’s a “dud.” JUST TELL HIM!
Tina Black says
So this talent is Angel of Death?
Ellie101 says
Eek! I’m so excited for Wildfire! Thanks so much for the lovely snippets!
Kaylenn/Kayeri says
Wow, how long til the rest? Seven weeks or so, right? I’ll make it somehow! =)
Pamg says
Yeah.
That count down clock is pure evil!
sjk says
Omg I just finished part 3. Squee!!!
Tiff says
Distraction is greatly appreciated.
Patience says
Oh. My. God. I really hate to say it, and please don’t kill me for saying so,but I love this Legacy series more than Kate and Curran.
Dawn says
I thought I felt that way too, but think when I started KD, the world building and story was so original, I was giddy. I still love KD, but it’s been around for a while now, so it’s worn off. The giddiness I felt then is what I feel for this series now. That excitement of a new original series that is excellent, and you know there’s more to come.
Kristi says
Me too.
Katherine says
I’m with you. Curran had to grow on me; I couldn’t stand him in the first book. Rogan, on the other hand, I liked from the get go.
nickole195 says
I love this series more than KD too, which is amazing and lovely as well. Something endearing bout Nevada and Rogan.
sarafina says
I’m shallow, and I own it. Whatever is in my hands right now is my favorite.
trailing wife says
You have a gift for happiness, not a shallow thing at all. 🙂 And I quite agree.
sarafina says
Thx!!
Mousewynne says
Whee! That’s going to be an epic ride! Thank you for the snippets.
Chris says
oh the knot in my stomach. Love the picture touch, Grandma Frieda has always been my favorite.
Jenny G says
Thank you UK for the stress relief
Love the snippets
I am such a snippet whore!
tiger says
I prefer to think of myself as a snippet junkie (lurking in the web and twitching).
Tink says
There’s got to be another country that’s in need of stress relief due to elections or public scandals. You guys in Australia do something to be newsworthy so you can plead for a snippet!
LCG says
Technically, May isn’t even PM unless she can form a government. If she does (given the likely supporting party), we’ll need more snippets to bring us out of a deep slough of despond!
Pat Crouch says
Yay!!
sarafina says
That seems like an excellent plan to get the entire book by snippets before July 25.
Charis N. says
Nah, just come wallow in the slough with U.S.
Marjorie Teoh says
Thank you so much, Authorlords! And UK readers for getting us this bonus. Oh, and not to be greedy or anything but will we still get another snippet next week, please? Totally ok if not but just checking 🙂
SoCoMom says
I am loving this — your writing is a lifeline and light in a craazy a** week. Thank you!
Monika says
“starting stupid shit on twitter” ROFL! (is that a dig?)
gingko-girl says
Snicker. I thought the same thing. Isn’t that presidential behavior now?
jewelwing says
😀 That one caught my eye too. “Do you have more impulse control than a tenth grader?”
lynn says
I thought about President Trump when I read that too. I am glad to have gotten to read snippet now instead of in August. Of course by then, I may be doing more than ROFLOL.
Joan says
Oh Grandma Frida ?. I have a relative just like you. Huge thanks to our generous Author Lords for all the snippets.
wont says
Thank you so much Ilona! And you too Mahmud! What an excellent reason! Let’s see, what else is happening? hmmm…I had new dishwasher installed yesterday. No more hand washing dishes. Surely that calls for a celebration. I’m certainly happy about it. Does that qualify for another snippet? **squints**
Tasha A says
Yes!! Wont got a new dishwasher! We totally need another snippet to celebrate!! ?
Robin says
And I’m losing my dishwasher! Surely that deserves a snippet 🙂
Kathryn the almost Great says
Yes!! I agree. Plus, our guinea pig needs her nails trimmed. Do you know how stressful this is???
I definitely need a snippet to help with that. ::wink::
Tasha A says
Ooohhh even better reason!! ?
Ange in Oz says
Our cat needs to go to the vet to have his teeth cleaned. That will involve much pitiful wailing in the car, stressed looks and shedding fur at the vet, and much sadness and perhaps even… the back view.. on his return. How about that too?
Naomi J says
My husband is deployed, I got pregnant on his R&R, I homeschool 5, that’s right 5 boys, and my husband just got orders to Texas so I have to pack up the house, get it ready to rent and drive more than 1/2 way across the country 6 months pregnant alone with 5 boys. (No I don’t know what baby #6 is yet, but I’m pretty sure it’s going to be another boy) I would like another snippet or better yet and ARC
Shannon from Texas says
Oh my gracious goodness. I can’t give you a snippet, but will you take a virtual hug?
Thank you, from my heart, for your service and sacrifice. ((()))
Rena says
You win.
Korinne says
Wow, girl! And moving to Texas in the summer, too. You’ll get it done somehow. Seriously, good luck and God bless.
Ilona says
Next week. 🙂
anainasia says
yehe 🙂
Judy says
Thank you,,, 🙂
Simone says
You’re so good to us 🙂
lilumaria says
No wait! I’m Italian and here the politics are a mess. The actual government is the fourth government not elected by us, the people and today instead of to ask for a new election , they tried to change the electoral law but it didn’t go well. So for that and for the italian people I ask for another snippet! 😉
trailing wife says
At least you have a government — just think if you were Belgium. 🙁
BooksDarling says
I just spent two hours and forty minutes in HOUSTON traffic commuting home. I earned a treat for not ramming anything on the way home. ?
Rene says
Love this!!! OH I love this series!
Geetha says
That was fantastic! As thanks, here’s a comic from The Pigeon Gazette.
https://m.tapas.io/episode/162893
jewelwing says
LOL!
EarlineM says
*ROFL*
Andrea Smith says
Lol! I feel like this each year?
Ange in Oz says
I actually snorted!
LisaS says
LOL!
MaryH says
Amazing!!! 🙂
Susan says
Please PLEASE extend the series. Seven books, that sound about right?
Katherine says
Only seven? That still sounds too short. 😉
Patience says
Yep I agree.
PaulaL says
But it’s best to leave readers not feeling that a series went on -too- long. (There are some series which I’ve stopped reading, and pretend that they ended before the book(s) which disappointed me, e.g. the Mordred book which follows the Merlin trilogy by Mary Stewart)
Right now I’m among those who are waiting impatiently for Wildfire and looking forward to the next snippet, and to find out what happens with Arabella, Catalina, Bern, Leon, and wondering about Bern and Leon’s mother, and….
sarafina says
The Mordred book was a surprise, but I don’t think IA will disappoint. As you listed, plenty of raw material to work with.
Amy says
I love these snippets so much, but they come with a downside. The downside being that I inevitably end up reading them at work, silently fan girling out and making my coworkers concerned about my sanity.
Aleja says
Thank god I have an office where no one can see me being silly! Because yes – work reading…bad for efficiency but oooohhh so wonderful snippets 😉
CAROLINA says
Oh my God, yes! I freak out at work all the time. My coworkers already think I’m crazy
jewelwing says
Thank God I read this at home where no one could hear me guffaw (except the dog).
Korinne says
Thank you!!!!! Now that this chapter feels complete, I’m going to do my best to not read any more snippets until WF; I want the rest of it to be fresh and new! Now we’ll see how strong my will is… Rogan POV is still fair game though! There are so many scenes I’d love his perspective on. I love him, and I love Nevada, and I love YOU, Authorlords! <3
And I should mention that I love Grandma Frida because seriously, she's awesome.
Tina Black says
Ohhhh, I agree with you but the temptation of a snippet always gets me. I don’t want one that will be a spoiler. Going from the beginning seems to work for me, and be safe enough.
Korinne says
Yeah… It’s been a few days now and I’m already wondering if I’ll be able to hold out when the new snippet appears next week…. Oh the temptation!
lee says
Thank you Mahmud for making a very good point about equality of need for stress relief, and thank you Incredible Authorlords for this additional snippet! Wheeeeeeeee ~ each snippet makes the time go a little faster until we can get our grubby little hands on Wildfire!
cocoakitten says
In Arabella’s word.. YUSSSSSS for snippet 😀 The world may no longer make sense to me, but at least I have my consoling snippets 😉
Diane L says
Wonderful! Thanks for the early snippet. Very pleased White Hot is such a hit . . . hopefully that means more books in this series. 😀
Drew says
Ooohhhhh, thanks. Can’t wait for the whole book.
Shani says
More, more, I NEED more, please… pretty please? O.K, I will wait like a good girl. Thanks for the snippets and for being awesome writers and generally awesome
CAROLINA says
THIS HAS MADE ME SO HAPPY! YAY!
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
Paktra says
Gosh, all of their books are AMAZING. I’ve read some of their shorter stories, and they’re just as well-written as the Kate Daniels, Edge, and Hidden Legacy series. I feel like whenever I read one of their books again it gets even better than before. Please keep writing stories, because I don’t think I could live without reading books written the way you guys write them!
TheReluctantOtter says
Thank you! I viewed yesterday’s snippet as saving Thursday but this bonus one has certainly helped ease the horror of Friday.
Vinity says
Thank you so much! It really helps on these wild days.
Char says
Great snipit! Made me cry at work! Thank You.
Eli says
I am hoping there will be a 3 book series for each of the siblings. Bern or Catalina would probably be next, but a romance for Grandma Frida would be AWESOME!
And, yeah, it seems like Leon is being set up for some Emo anti-hero stuff. I really hope Nevada tells him.
Helenmary Cody says
“Aha. And how did that work out for me?”
Pure gold! 🙂
Tink says
Probably not the latest lingo, but I think it fits…
SNAP!
gingko-girl says
I just want to say, I LOVE Grandma Frida. Her quirkiness so reminds me of my own Grandmother.
cmc says
Thank you for this!!
Aidan says
I am getting unconfortable about Nevada (and Penelope maybe) withholding information about Leon’s power. I know he is annoying in his teenager way but I have the feeling he has a lot of stress and insecurity about not having magic and he must feel miserable. Worse, the more they wait to tell him, the more betrayed he will feel.
I know Nevada didn’t have the time to tell him but with the snippet, it seems longer and I am starting to feel sorry for Leon.
Thank you for spoiling is with the awesome snippets, Authorlords!
sarafina says
I agree, Nevada should just stop, send everyone else out of the room and tell Leon. Inform the rest of the family later. After all, Leon may be Prime or near-Prime now. And she KNOWS disasters happen.
I don’t understand why Penelope is being such an obstructionist. (except is makes an interesting plot point)
Aidan says
Penelope is probably such a obstructionist because she is a mother who is afraid for her children. Without a house, everyone will try to use them. With a house, they will be in danger forever. If EG manages to reach them, they will go though hell. She is in a impossible situation and she doesn’t see any way to protect the ones she loves.
And for Leon, since the authorlords keep adding pressure on him, I think they are preparing a spectacular bloody mess.
Patience says
You know I just had a thought (Hey stop laughing!), when the Baylor family goes through the House registration, testing and notification process, that’s gonna be published all over. I wonder if additional “family” members are going to pop out of the woodwork, perhaps from maternal grandpa or another cousin Bern and Leo know nothing about. Or maybe GFH tried again after Nevada’s father left and there are aunts and uncles about that Grandma Freida and Penelope don’t want to talk about.
Come on July 25th!
sarafina says
Gisela may pop up again. In fact that sounds very likely. Maybe Bern and Leon have a half-sister!!
Frances says
Maybe Penelope’s sister Gisele will come back and demonstrate she has some family loyalty and maternal protective instincts and help out.
Elle says
Or she may pop back in after taking $$$ to sell the family out – loyalty does not appear to be her thing.
sarafina says
Both Nevada and Rogan will keep that from happening. Nevada knows the deal with the boys, and Rogan won’t cut her any slack.
Margaret says
Thank you so much. Need more! Didn’t even get to watch Comey. Today took a three hour trip to pick up two repaired sewing machines, and this afternoon, three cats are going to the vet for various heath problems. Also, sob, my washer and dryer are not working.
Mahmud El Shafey - Yes, that one : ) says
Great snippet! After devouring White Hot, can’t wait for Wildfire! Leon, Catalina and Arabella are too funny!
Tasha A says
Thanks for the suggestion!
Angel says
So amazing, thank you.
I have to say that I love the family dynamics. It’s so lifelike! Your teenagers are moody, self absorbed, sweet, funny, loveable and bounce between adult and childlike so quickly. It’s like watching any one of my teenage siblings ?
Mike says
Thank you who knew our crappy uk politics would get us a treat! No comments on it though as don’t want to ruin the snippet!! Yay!
Roll on Wildfire release! ?
sakinah says
WHO tested Bern when he was 10, and why was he allowed to be tested if they were all trying to hide? Hmm, maybe this was before he was adopted by Penelope and he was still with his mom? If he was tested, does that mean he is registered somewhere though?
Omg, I am so intrigued by all their powers, and everything that will unfold in this book!
kelticat says
I was thinking that a teacher could have insisted that he be tested when he did something that outstripped the skill-set that a 10 year old should have. Schools could have a power testing department along with a school psychologist.
Anne Schultz says
Perhaps they were tested when the Baylors took permanent custody, but I agree that a school worker could trigger testing especially since his talent would show at school.
Diane says
Loving these snippets!!! Keep them coming even if they wreck havoc with my mind.
I had seen so many snippets for ‘White Hot’ that when I went to order the book at first I thought I must have already read it. The snippet on the website felt so well-known and part of me. I had to keep looking through my bookshelves and order history on Amazon and The Book Depository just to make sure I didn’t already have it or hadn’t pre-ordered it.
I am very much looking forward to the book coming out. I hope it sells well enough for a continuation of the series.
Patricia Schlorke says
Thank you to the book devouring horde in the UK for convincing the Authorlords to give all of us another snippet.
I love Grandma Frida! She basically said “I told you so” to Penelope. Also, Penelope running away? This is the same woman who had Rogan in her sights and threatened to shoot him as well as Augustine, and she wants to run away?! Hmm………makes me wonder what Nevada’s dad told her about his mom.
sarafina says
James was apparently treated horribly. However, Nevada and the girls are not infants or young children. And I imagine just sniper-shooting someone is not that hard – EG has her retinue to protect her.
Kristina says
Thank you! Having these chapter rolled out like this has made the waiting for July so much easier!
fairyfreak says
So, what did Bern register as when he was 10? *Curious*
Thank you so much for the snippets!!
Gail G says
Heart stopped! You write characters with such strength, family foibles and all. Magic everywhere.
karen h says
Thank you, thank you, for these snippets!!
Amanda says
I’m not in the UK, but I really needed this so thank you!
Also, has anyone else taken off July 25th so they can read Wildfire without interruptions? I did that for White Hot. Best idea ever.
Patricia Schlorke says
I would love too, but since I’m taking an entire week off at the beginning of July, I better not otherwise my boss will wonder. 🙁
Rena says
I put in for a personal day, but my boss hasn’t told me yes or no yet.
Pat says
Thank you so much. July 25 can’t come fast enough. Where is the chapter 2 part 1 snippet.
Pika says
I love Grandma and her pictures *-*
Kris says
I finished White Hot and then continued to these delicious snippets… love you, Authorlords, and thank you for relief from stressful politics.
So looking forward to Wildfire!
Teresa die hard fan says
Does it seem like Penelope knows an awful lot about primes and power. Has she been holding out on us?
Ms. Kim says
What an interesting idea. I’d like to know more about that.
Oshi says
She would be familiar with it from what her late husband has told her.
Beverly says
I wonder if she can be a prime also…she was in hiding for her family.?????
wont says
I think both Penelope and Grandma may be holding out. They did a pretty good job of keeping Nevada’s status secret. With the vicious history of Nevada’s dad, I can understand Penelope’s feelings toward Primes. But, it just seems too much to think that Nevada, Catalina, probably Arabella all being Primes, and maybe Leon, and not have Primes previously in the family. Just one would be a big deal, but three? Possibly four? There has to be some magical lineage information we are missing.
Carol says
I agree with that. I also think that there is a lot missing about Nevada’s father. I wouldn’t be surprised about anything unfolding from him.
Joan says
Bern + Leon are from Nevada’s mom’s side of the family (her sister’s children) and they are both Primes or at least Significants.
So it looks like Nevada and her 2 sisters get their power from their dad + Victoria’s side of the family AND from their mom + grandma’s.
sarafina says
We know nothing about the cousins’ fathers.
kelticat says
I issued a theory a few days ago about Prime families that may have decided not to join *high* society and thus were under the radar and throwing the tests to be certified lower. If Grandpa Leon was a member of a House, he could have been a prime. And fathered either primes or significants.
anainasia says
i been thinking that too – that maybe some of these powers don’t come all down from scary evil grandma – but from Penelope’s side and powers – there was something in these snippets – where I was – hmm “as if she had telepathy” or something like that – maybe the shooting is her minor skill?
Anne Schultz says
I think that some magical skills would be easier to conceal. The mental talents maybe easier. For example, the first time that Nevada remembers detecting a lie. Is when receiving a shot in a doctor’s office and grandmother telling her it wouldn’t hurt.
If a toddler piped up and said. ” It does to hurt, why did you lie?” I wouldn’t think lie detector— I’d think kids say the darnedest things.
We know that that they went to extreme levels with at least Neveda and Arabella by showing them movies about what would be their fate at an early age.
BryMarie92 says
I like this theory! Its logical so that Victoria and Dad are not super magically potent for producing primes.
Violet says
Oh wow! Thank You
Judy says
I live in Canada, alas life is mostly stress-free, so no blackmail items for snippets. lol
sarafina says
Speaking for myself, anyway, please enjoy our discomfort. Schaudenfreude, anyone?
Charis N. says
And you have THE JUSTIN it’s not fair – we have the orange one and Canada has the smart cute one.
Sean says
Did you see his date with Obama? Ahh I miss when the biggest issue was that our president wore a tan suit or only had one tux.
Gracie O'Neil says
I’m in New Zealand. Same. But thank you, Ilona and Gordon, for the snippets. I love, love love this series. (I love all your series but this one is extra special somehow. ❤️?❤️?❤️?)
Ange in Oz says
I’m from Australia. We (well, his own political party) got rid of our last idiot Prime Minister through established democratic processes. Any other Commonwealth country want their Prime Minister to make a “captain’s call” (???!!!) and bring back imperial honours (???!!!) and knight Prince Phillip for services (???!!!) to their country?
Whilst I’m not a fan of our current government, given the state of politics in a fair chunk rest of the world I’m not going to complain.
But thank you to the Authorlords for another snippet. You rock.
Rachel says
oh my that snippet helped with the UK election fall out- we now have the DUP and May… the next few months will be interesting…….[sobs]
Love, love, love to the Authorlords- we who are about to die (politically anyway and probably culturally too) salute you xx
Lisa says
At least you are not stuck with “The Donald Duck”
??
Donna says
Hey! That’s a bit offensive Lisa 🙁 What has poor Donald Duck ever done to be treated thus?
As for the manchild who is currently in the presidential office, USA voted for him… the media helped him with all the coverage they gave him and the republican party wanted to win. They need to experience the fallout to learn not to place someone who has no background in politics or a clue as to what it entails to lead a country in that position.
Thank you Autherlords for the snippet 😀
Patience says
Ah absolutely. I wonder if Anyone (on both sides of the aisle) is going to learn their lesson, or will they be arrogant/stupid enough to repeat it?
sarafina says
A valid question, Patience. I also think voting equipment needs to be standardized in this country, with a separate method of verification, whether paper ballots or some other method. No more using machines known to be hackable (Diebolt).
cheryl z says
This is getting too political for me, I need another snipet please.
kelticat says
Try calling him Donald Duck-lips. That way we won’t confuse him with a lovable cartoon character.
Teri says
Thank you soooo much. What a treat!
My imagination is racing.
Celeste says
Ohboy!Ohboy!Ohboy!Ohboy!
sarafina says
I did think it was strange Leon called Penelope aunt instead of Mom since she adopted him, but maybe Gisela hung around a lot when he was young.
Patience says
Good point.
Anne Schultz says
I wonder if Gisela will make appearance in Wildfire? Meeting her may give a solid clue re: the parentage of both boys and they might not have the same father.
MerryB says
Doesn’t BFM give the impression that the two boys do have different fathers?
sarafina says
Yes, and gave the impression they were losers, too. Maybe the dads’ magic skipped a generation and bloomed in their sons.
Leslie says
Thank you!! I love it
Lisa says
Oh my! Most definitely what I’ve been waiting for! I only wished Rogan was in the scene! ( as I do with every scene in these books ?❤️)
Lisa
Beverly says
I see Rogan marrying Nevada. .. not just fot the House thing. But for The Love of her and her family. …
Carol says
That would be great!!!!!!
Zirraella says
Oooh, you are so good to us <3
Angela says
Yes!
PyeCat says
How spoiled we’ve become: 3 new books in one year? 2 released within weeks of each other? Frequent snippets?
Authorlords, you’re good to us and we appreciate it. 🙂 Really looking forward to “Wildfire”.
Joan says
Bern + Leon are from Nevada’s mom’s side of the family (her sister’s children) and they are both Primes or at least Significants.
So it looks like Nevada and her 2 sisters get their power from their dad + Victoria’s side of the family AND from their mom + grandma’s.
Joan says
Sorry, thetc above comment was supposed to go after a different post but my Internet is acting up.
PyeCat I agree totally with you ?
John says
Thank you for this! I appreciate it a lot. But if you keep releasing snippets if something weird happens politically then trump will have the whole book out before it’s published haha
Patience says
Ha,ha…
Tina Black says
We will still buy it!
sarafina says
FYI Ilona only:
If there are audible books only people at the Library tonite I will be happy to let them read Wildfire Chapter 1 in my copy of White Hot. (While I stand no more than 6 feet from them.)
Peter says
When Bern was 10, what level did he test as?
Great books!
Beverly says
Good Question. ..????
kelticat says
I’m wondering how old Bern was when Penelope lost her license. Because if it was around the time that he tested, that gives a potentially icky scenario.
sarafina says
How so?
kelticat says
According to the FAQ’s Penelope lost her license after her sister showed up with a boyfriend and demanded that Penelope turn over the two boys. Penelope said no, boyfriend attacked her, she had a Rogan reaction and ended up arrested for attempted murder.
If the time line for this occurred after Bern tested, what was so special about Bern and Leon that a woman who’s described as nonmaternal wanted the children bad enough to attack her own sister?
Anne Schultz says
Where did you get this info? I don’t remember it as a part of story line.??????
kelticat says
Go to the series page and scroll down to the FAQ section. Apparently enough people asked why Penelope lost her license that the authorlords have a permanent answer to it.
Eliza says
No, I’m pretty sure Bern’s abilities and hacking skills have nothing to do with Penelope losing her PI License.
In the scene where Dr Arias is trying to warn Nevada off from going to Rogan, Nevada mentions/thinks about how a judge took away Penelope’s license on the grounds of PTSD, although in Nevada’s/Dr Arias view it was less that the veterans reacted because of PTSD, and more that they reacted (overreacted I guess compared to a normal persons response) as they did because of how they were trained to automatically react in certain situations, and after a period of time that becomes an in-built response.
Michelle says
I think the point is what level of power could he have had that might have precipited the confrontation. The question is whether it would be the equivalent of learning your kid is heir to a huge fortune and deciding you wanted custody so you could get your hands on the money.
I wonder is Gisela decided that her kid was going to be her meal ticket and when Penelope found out she flipped her grid.
sarafina says
That sounds possible, Michelle.
Rohaise says
Thank you for the snippet. Is it July 25th yet?
Elle says
The 25th is my birthday and I’m MORE excited about the book release.
Sorah says
Why don’t they just join House Tremiane with the condition that Nevada take over? Wouldn’t EG be so happy her House isnt dying that she’d let?
Also she hasnt mentioned to her family that Rogan might call the relationship off if she does this… I feel like that might come back to bite her!
Thanks! Love this series!
wiedzma_florentyna says
I don’t think either is realistic.
If EG is as much of a bitch as everybody claim her to be then the hell would freeze before she would submit to not being in total control.
And I don’t think Rogan is that selfless or/and stupid.
Also sight of her with another man would probably make his blood boil, so it wouldn’t last very long even if he tried.
(Sorry for any spelling mistakes)
Ange in Oz says
Remember the snippet with Grandma Frida’s knitting being saved from the blowtorch, and Rogan being put to good use scrapping frames because he wasnt coping watching Nevada on a “date”?
Dawn says
I wonder if for the public eye they have to pretend to separate, but are still together privately?
PaulaL says
White Hot has a widow discussing how his marriage was a marriage on convenience, and how both he and his wife had arrangements for having sex partners outside their marriage.
Sean says
Which Rogan has already said would be impossible for them.
Jess says
Plus it was mentioned in a previous snippet that if Nevada’s family did join the Tremaine House, Nevada believes that Victoria would make them do terrible things as the head of the House.
“She can do things with Catalina’s talent.” Unspeakable, ugly things. Things that would make my thoughtful, kind sister hate herself. “And if Arabella’s magic is discovered . . .”
Katrina says
Such pleasurable torment.
Susan says
In case no one else has said it already, we need the countdown thingy either on the main page or the top of the blog page! 🙂
Ms. Kim says
I second that suggestion.
BryMarie92 says
Third!
Trish Henry says
Wowzers! Stomach punch! Can hardly wait!!
Charis N. says
Is there a chance that their DNA is screwy? EG may have really mixed things up. hee hee
Naomi J says
They would at least all be related through their mother and aunt. So everyone in the house right now is related to grandma. And since Penolpe has adopted the boys and they are all Baylors I don’t think that’s going to be a problem.
Sean says
Until Leon is outed as the bastard son of a billionaire prime. That is going to make the DNA test a little awkward… theory only but Romance novels are not known for being subtle and Baranovsky keeps being brought up.
Carol says
Oh My Gosh! Wouldn’t that be something!
lynn says
Well, I will not be surprised if Leon turns out to be a Prime’s bastard son. Bernard either as apparently their mother was a bit of a free spirit. But I think Baranovsky had a child with Elena de Trevino. The youngest child who is now being raised by the money hungry Mr de Trevino who might have significant magic.
Joan says
Ooohhhh the plot thickens – DNA !!
We know Bernard + Leon’s mom but never any mention of their father(s) …
sarafina says
Oh WOW!!!! That’s right, if Baranovsky’s DNA is on record, and it probably is, FIREWORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nanik says
Thank you for this wonderful excerpt !!!
Carol says
Thank you for the wonderful snippets!
Kamrin says
OMG I can’t wait!!!!!! I absolutely love this series ❤
Stacy says
Thank you author lords, for another series that has me begging for more. I can’t pick a favorite among any of your series, they all are special in their worlds. Take that back, Hidden Legacy is winning at the moment, mainly due to the fact White Hot just came out and very close is Wildfire release. So thank you.
Kendran says
We are House Baylor, and we can do MANY things
Snakatac says
Spoiler alert
Is there any practical reason they couldn’t just join House Rogan? If joining Auggie’s House was an option, why not ask to join her Snoogy Woogums’ house!
Evil ?
Nifty says
Being House Rogan wouldn’t protect them. The whole thing about forming a new House is that they are protected for 3 years. That’s kind of “the rule.” Penelope doubts that that would stop Evil Grandma, but at least if they do become a house and EG violates the 3-year safety clause, that might stir up sentiment against her, and other Houses might be more willing to assist House Baylor…or at least NOT assist House Tremaine. And if EG does back off for the 3 years, then it gives the kids a chance to grow up. Catalina is already on the cusp of 18, but Arabella and Leon have 3 more years. So I could see how Nevada would go the House Baylor route to secure the 3-year safety clause and give her sister and cousin a chance to grow up without facing a daily barrage of threats.
Plus, I can see Nevada joining Rogan’s House through marriage or something like that, but I don’t see her joining his House just for protection. She’s too independent for that. AND she already knows she has his protection. As she said, he would do anything and everything for her. But she doesn’t want to be someone’s vassal.
Patience says
Just because GFH can’t attack House Baylor for 3 years doesn’t mean she can’t manipulate House Baylor in other ways. Primes are sneaky like that. I think Leon would be susceptible to being persuaded to the Dark Side. Nevada can’t put a hex on everybody.
sarafina says
They would not have join Augustine’s house, they would have been employed by the House, not MII. A higher-paid servant is still a servant. Nevada cherishes her independence, and the firm her dad built.
Ange in Oz says
Already explained by the Authorlorda that it would make them vassals to House Rogan and it would mean they would also inherit Rogan’s enemies, powerful enemies.
J says
The 2d or 3d part of the Chapter addressed this.
House Rogan has powerful enemies. Nevada doesn’t think they should trade Victoria for Rogan’s enemies, and joining Rogan won’t necessarily protect them from her better than this alternative.
BryMarie92 says
Also think of the unsaid reasons for becoming a House. They’re the same for Nevada building up the agency. A legacy for her family to inherit/keep. After House Baylor is firmed if Nevada marries Rogan, every member of her house will still have prestige and options. This way they aren’t reliant upon Rogan, although he’ll probably still offer/force his services to them.
BryMarie92 says
*formed.
They are great in their own rights/magic/abilities (which is forever) and not just based off of a marriage (which is severable).
wiedzma_florentyna says
Thank You !
And thank You too misterious blackmailing people from England.
I’m Polish there is planty to be upset about with this constant shitstorm in our politics…
Oh I know! We were fucked over in both Word Wars.
Does it mean I can qualify for a snippet too?
Ms. Kim says
Don’t forget to throw in Napolean eviserating your country.
Patience says
Absolutely, join the party! We, however, try to keep our words polite.
DianainCa says
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! You made my Friday!
Liss says
I am still sad that they let Leon believe he is a dud with no magic. It’s really mean. I just know it will backfire and I just feel awful about it.
As always beautiful writing, it has really made my day. Thankyou!
As for politics, I live in Australia. Even if a Prime Minister is elected, there is no guarantee that they will retain their position for the length of the term.
Sean says
Well in real time it has been less than a week since they found out, plus they don’t really know what he is. So it isn’t like they are holding out on him. I think the DNA test is going to be a big reveal for Leon and that is going to out his ability.
kelticat says
I have a feeling that Penelope knows exactly what Leon is, since I suspect that her talent works in a similar fashion.
Tania says
Me too! i am very worried about Leon. I hope it doesn’t go too pear shaped and EG or any of the other Houses get their claws into him.. and i hope he gets his HEA. Please let him be ok! Suffering here…:)
Flybynite says
Fair is fair, snippet wise. And here, we all win!
Teresa die hard fan says
I have been at the library since 3:00. I can hardly wait so the snippet really helped me today. Are you here yet? Thank you
Sarah says
I’m not miffed by any politics, but it has been a long, emotional, frustrating (albeit rewarding) two weeks. And I have a large move with a small person ahead of me for the summer, no job to look forward to, and uncertain waters ahead. So, these snippets have certainly brightened my day!
Patience says
Good luck. Moves are difficult. Keep in touch.
DawnK says
I absolutely refuse to wish the summer away just so I can read this book. But oh my Lord it’s hard not to want these two months to fly by.
sarafina says
Living in Texas, I would gladly wish the summer away if I could, even if Wildfire wasn’t the golden prize.
Ms. Kim says
All hail the Authorlords!
Omar Mtz says
In three years with all that magic, they would become one of the most powerful and dangerous houses in Huston.
catlover. says
can we blame all this political stupidity around the world on chemical trails, global warming, or a universal lobotomy requirement to be an elected official? Nice to know it’s not just us.
Patricia Schlorke says
Did Victoria Tremaine do a lobotomy on the current US president? I wonder somtimes.
AngelMercury says
Ah Yay! Here I thought pt3 might be the last we get for a while. Looking forward to this book so much.
Bunso says
what about the Philippines? we have Duterte 🙁
sarafina says
Agreed. You need your own snippet.
Avril says
Thank you. You made my day a little brighter.
James says
Thank you for the snippet. It absolutely made me smile which I needed
Reethu says
Thank you for the snippet
Is there any chance for international tour for the authorlords???
Allan says
I wonder if Leon will be the third prime. This will be so delicious.
Tania says
That would be fantastic! i just hope he doesn’t become a dark horse…Augustine’s words about dark horses keep rolling through my head…
Allan says
Well he isn’t an intentional dark horse
Tina Black says
A dark horse seems to be a talent who does not fit into the House specialty. So far, House Baylor shows no signs of having a specialty with many primes having the same talents.
Anne Schultz says
It is unacknowledged prime talent usually not inline with houses’ usual expertise.
Kathy says
After they form House Baylor, I’d like Nevada to form an alliance with a House Rogan by marrying Rogan and Catalina to marry Cornelius (alliance House Harrison) and maybe Arabella with Augustine’s brother (alliance House Montgomery) because she wanted to copy Augustine’s illusion so they all must have related magic. What do you think?
Tania says
I was also thinking what a powerhouse would a Baylor – Rogan – Montgomery – Harrison alliance would be…And Latimer, if and when we know what magic their house has. Wow!
sarafina says
What if the parties involved didn’t care for the idea? That would be no better than EG’s presumed plotting.
Allan says
Actually it would make more sense for Cornelius to marry Arabella. Cornelius could bond with her, thus showing if needed they could control Arabella.
Tina Black says
Nooo! Arabella is enchanted by the pretty Montgomery, and there seems to be some connection from Catalina to Cornelius, besides Matilda.
Anne Schultz says
Arabella is fifteen. Augustine is mostly likely twice her age at least because he is two years over Conner Rogon’s age.
Laurence says
Exactly!
Kerry says
OMG. Wow! Love you guys. Sincerely and truly. No one writes the way you do. Thanks for the extra snippet!
Kick says
Teenage boy with that kind boy of secret coupled with desire to be cool? Seems exceedingly wise to keep the secret although I’m sure said secret wont last more than half a book.
Jess says
This is completely random, but Arabella’s line to Catalina — “For once in your life, make a decision!” — reminded me so much of Hamilton’s line to Burr regarding the U.S. Constitution: “For once in your life, take a stand with pride; I don’t understand how you stand to the side!” Authorlords, have you heard of/seen the musical Hamilton?
Jade says
Oh thank you, being in the UK this whole election thing is just painful and frustrating. Especially now that May is forming coalition with a anti gay, anti abortion party…..unbelievable.
Arlia says
I think Ceasar is Rynda. I mean, even Rogan wouldn’t suspect her and yet she’s an empath, so she would’ve known that Nevada wasn’t affected by her mom’s magic during the fundraiser, but she kept up the ruse.
And now I bet she’s trying to separate Rogan and Nevada from each other. Easier to take down separately. ?
anainasia says
i was thinking that today too – after reading the amazon blurb on Wildfire – about the poor emotional wife routine becoming old or something like that. But she really doesn’t know where her husband is, unless she send him away not knowing, so she could pass Nevada’s tests. hmmm – more room for speculations on that one.
Crystal says
Thank you for the snippet!
Does anyone else think the DNA testing will be an issue? I wonder if Catalina and Arabella are adopted. There is a bit of an age difference between them and Nevada, they don’t look like each other or her, and they have all have such different magic skills.
sarafina says
I think Nevada’s birth may have been a surprise, and her parents were careful about contraception after that. Also, Penelope was in the Army and may not have been physically present. With the lack of knowledge about James’ paternity, who knows what is in the mix? And Nevada would have noticed if the girls arrived with out a pregnant Penelope.
Caroline says
Thank you. Things in the U.K. have been….well…. not great, so it was lovely for you to think of the UK branch of the book-devouring horde. Only real plus from the election result, from my perspective, is that maybe, just maybe, it might lead to a rethink on hard BREXIT. No BREXIT would be my wish, but….
Marilyn says
Thank you thank you I always buy your books and reread at will they never fail
Penelope27 says
So could Caesar have magic like Catalina’s? And what does the Baylor family tree look like with all these different abilities? Curiouser and curiouser. I think a House is a political title that puts them above laws that plebs have to live by, they are mainly considering this for the 3 year rule. They are already a powerful family with powerful allies. I think Nevada will remember who stood by them prior to becoming a House. These are great stories, however you have this one end, thank you for writing them.
Penelope27 says
Oh, and by powerful, I don’t mean their magic, that is their strength, not their power, at least how I read it….
Tink says
I just reread White Hot and had the same thought when Nevada said Howling and Olivia were so devoted to Caesar. We don’t know anything about Nevada’s paternal grandfather, only that EG did some unsavory things to get pregnant. What if Caesar is their grandfather, and Catalina inherited his magic? He’s had more practice, so he could be good enough to make people love him without attacking him, and have that love stick with them so they continue to do what he wants when they’re no longer in his presence.
Jolie vines says
Ooh I like it. That compulsion and dogged devotion fits the two examples perfectly.
Sorah says
But arabella had to rescue Lina after 30 mins… Wouldnt Ceasar have the same issue if he had her powers?
Anne Schultz says
With experience, comes control. The difference between when Nevada use her magic on Rogan in BFM or when she used it on Augustine in WH. In BFM she used it like a sledgehammer and got her answers, but left Rogan with no doubt of what she had done, but with Augustine she trickled it out and he wasn’t even aware of what she was doing or the info he gave her. She had to show him a video.
Samantha says
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You all you lovely frustrated Brits. Snippets always put the icing on my day, I hope it does the same for you.

Poor Leon. I want to shake Navada so she’ll tell him. Arabella is pure badass and I love that. I love this whole series. Thank you, Authorlords, for being awesome!

Tamara says
I. Can. Hardly. Wait. Ah! I have the day off and everything.
Anne Schultz says
44 days and counting…..
Now back to solving the mystery of who is Cesear?
-he definitely has some degree of charisma talent, whether it magically enhanced or not, because he brings together diverse individuals to the same goal.
– he holds a position that allows him a variety of people types from a prime to excised individuals.
-he is held in high esteem and able to convince others that his goal is worth sacrifices or acceptable losses.
– he has something in common with of all of them, I think he played by the rules but was dissed by society.
– I think he might have closer relationship with Kelly Waller and Oliva Charles. Oliva because she has a hex on her and Kelly because she seems to carry orders to others and keeps them in line.
Cheryl Kruger says
I think he is the old Mage who used to be the Head of the Assembly and who hugged Cornelius in the beginning of White Hot when Nevada visited the Assembly De was very captivating in the short amount of time he was featured!
Anne Schultz says
Linus Duncan is my front runner too, but it takes some real gall to comfort the grieving husband when you caused his wife’s death.
anainasia says
how about the guy who thought Nevada – was a victim of domestic abuse, everyone was surprised he was there at the party?
Madita says
I don’t actually think he has magic enhanced charisma. There is a lot of motivation in being put aside by society, a lot of anger. And in simply wanting more power, just for personal gain. I don’t think it would need anybody forcing, coercing or convincing all these people with magic. Also, there would be no impact on the House structure in their society, if people only acted because of one magic talent.
Anne Schultz says
Not enough info to judge, but the jury still out.
….but his actions do not make think that acceptable losses would be a part of his vocabulary.
Giota says
Caesar is LENORA!! how about that??!! She is beyond reproach and Nevadas hero so…… who better to disappoint her right???
Christine says
Many thanks for the new snippet ?
I live in the U.K. And had hoped to keep politics out of the blog, I’m not particularly keen on politics – but I always vote – I have to say not everyone here is sorry that Teresa May is still in charge, I am one of them.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion and their vote, but this is a place to enjoy everything team Ilona Andrews gives each and everyone of us please let’s keep it that way ?
sarafina says
And not everyone in the U.S. is sorry Trump is president, although I am. You felt you needed to get your political point across, and you did.
Frances says
Well expressed Christine. I believe the only person who should express political opinions on this blog is Ilona since it is her blog. Of course if Ilona does invite us to comment on politics that would be different. I hope she doesn’t because I really enjoy the book recommendations, writing skill discussion, snippets and commentary. It is like an oasis of sense in an increasingly crazy world. There are plenty of political commentary blogs for those who want to express political opinion.

OT- Kate is in the semi-finals over at Vampire Diaries, and will face the winner of the Mercy Thompson v. Vlad bracket. I think Kate could take Mercy, and we know she kills vamps all the time.
wilma says
Actually sarafina it is not Vampire Diaries, it is Vampire Book Club, Alpha Showdown.
http://vampirebookclub.net/alpha-showdown-2017/
Mercy Thompson (Patricia Briggs) vs Kate Daniels by our authorlords.
sarafina says
Thank you for the correction, yes, I messed up.
JCim says
She has to tell Leon. That is a disaster waiting to happen.
Oona says
Yep. And I would LOVE it if Rogan was the one who pulls Leon out of danger this 1 increasing his devotion and 2 annoying the heck out of Nevada
sarafina says
Maybe Bug could contribute, Rogan has a lot in his hands.
Mandikins says
Or, Leon could discover his crazy talent through playing pool! He could mop up! Just because Nevada and Penelope fear Leon’s only option for his powers are combat related, that doesn’t make it absolutely true.
*He could create ‘kinectic parkour’ and be a YouTube sensation bouncing over and around obstacles as they are hurtling at different velocities/trajectories.
*Pool!
*He could coach basketball, or NASCAR…
* Best Sports Announcer EVAR!
Arcanist Lupus says
The more I think of it, the less likely it seems that Nevada’s dad ever really escaped. EG is capable of pulling information from people without then even knowing it, and has the full resources of her house behind her. Tracking him would be trivial. It seems far more likely that she’s kept tabs on them the entire time, but was content to leave them be as long as none showed Prime talent. Nevada shows off her power, and suddenly EG is paying attention. She still doesn’t know if Nevada is a Prime or just a Significant, though. So she sets a trap. Her meeting with Augustus was never about learning Nevada’s identity – her goal was to learn how powerful she was. She walks in, sees a geas that only a Prime could make, and walks out having gotten what she wanted.
Anne Schultz says
I agree completely. She would only be interested in the girls and Nevada had been registered as a dud. Even if the family knew different.
Alinia says
Good point!!!
Michelle says
That is very, very interesting!
lynn says
Yes I agree. I had this thought too that Evil Grandmother wanted to know what Nevada was capable of magically doing. EG did not have to give Augustine forewarning that she was coming but she did so she could see results ie either he would be dead when she arrived or shielded by a Prime. Either way EG got the information she wanted.
Also look at how long it took Bug to figure out who was behind bank buyout attempt. I am sure Bug thought it was House Montgomery too but he did the hard work and discovered otherwise.
I think the mercenary attack was “Caesar’s people” not EG but they could have told her about what happened to the last standing mercenary to bring her into the fold on their side. I am sure Bug and Bern’s attack on mercenary database was completely undetected and through.
Mandikins says
I also wonder about her dad’s conception… it is a given that DNA was used from the Tremaine bitch and another suitable donor, right?
And Penelope said she couldn’t carry a baby, and did ‘things’.
What if Nevada’s dad was ‘incubated’ in a uterus-sized pocket of the arcane realm? Maybe the wild and unpredictable magic of the arcane pocket brought him to term!
This would explain:
* Penelope’s revulsion of ‘she did things’
* The spike in Related but Dissimilar Prime talents in his offspring. Maybe his magic infused DNA gave his kiddos a ‘boost’.
CA says
thanks thanks thanks
Madita says
Can Germany get one as well? Just because we love you here and love is important ☺️

Sales are better because you sunk your claws in with Book One. And the story always gets stronger, the people more complex….you 2 are just that good.
Psychic insight,,,,,,,, This series is gold. If you have ever written a rival to Kate, this is it. Not as dark or gritty, but as emotionally deep and complex. You rock at the layering!
This snippet made me tear up! (could be hormones……)
Bat says
ACK, come on July 25 (although under the books section it has an Aug release date)
MaryK says
Gah! They should all join House Rogan then the wicked witch wouldn’t have a chance. Besides, Nevada will never convince Rogan to marry her once they’re a separate House.
Dan Wylie-Sears says
Of course she’ll convince him to marry her despite the existence of House Baylor. It just means there’s a story where she overcomes the obstacle and does it the hard way.
Tina Black says
He said he doesn’t care about who’s first as long as he’s the last. And he gives her the “all in or all out” choice, and she jumps him. She is not going to let go, and neither is he.
Dan Wylie-Sears says
I don’t get what the problem is with Leon knowing his talent. So his apparent best career path is to be a commander in either Rogan’s private army or some branch of the US military. So what? He doesn’t have to take that path: just as Nevada can either scoop helpless people’s brains out with her magic ladle or hex people to protect them from other people’s mind-magic, likewise Leon can either be a battlefield commander or use his magic to design secure facilities. Or anything else that involves grasping similar patterns.
Oshi says
It’s hard for her family to say Leon going into the military is a bad idea. They have a long history of service and even Rogan his idol served. Sometimes the lure of doing what you’re meant to do at the best possible level is to hard to stop. Although if they do become a house perhaps Leon will have an easier time of it.
Patience says
Forgive me if this has already been discussed. Doesn’t seem to you that there is a significant Mexico connection in White hot; i.e., Mad Rogan, the Scourge of Mexico, The relatively recent war with Mexico/allies, The Sixteen, the mercenaries rerouted from a mission in Montemorelos, and last, but not least, Caesar, not like a Roman cesar, but a Latin sayZar.
Just a thought…
sarafina says
I think it would be a lot weirder if there was a ‘significant’ Nigerian or Mongolian or Albanian connection. They are in Texas; the other country is just across the river.
Ilona says
Patience, here are Houston’s demographics: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Houston.
Patience says
Thx, I’m aware of demos, lived in Ft.Worth for 18 years, (Baylor grad). I was just commenting on a theme, no offense intended. Thought maybe Ceasar was someone from the war.
sarafina says
We’ll find out next month.
lynn says
Thank you Ilona Andrews for the snippets.
I am in USA. My 90 year old great uncle had a stroke Thursday june 8 and was and still is in ICU. So I have been on the road out of state. The family had quite a chuckle with my assorted adventures getting there. mapquest did not lie but the stated 3 hours and 45 minutes (all interstate) was actually 5 hours and 15 minutes due to the freaking orange barrels and work zones. The posted work zone speed was 60 mph but we never went that as we were all stopped or inching along at speeds under first gear. I ROFLOL-ed when I realized that every time there was a posted sign that said new pattern we stopped.
I never saw any law enforcement until I was almost hit by a free flying bumper from somewhere as there were no vehicles in front of me going up incline so I immediately tucked right back into the truck convoy I was traveling with and free flying bumper hit the law enforcement car behind me. [first truck of convoy was a fully loaded enclosed moving transport as was second truck so they would really slow down going upgrade so I would move into left lane so truck behind me would be able to run up on truck in front of me and then fall back. going down incline and straight I would tuck back in as fourth in convoy because they ran speed limit. I could not pass the convoy without speeding and I kept having morons with texas and ohio license plates running up behind me and flashing lights that they wanted to pass when I was in left lane.] When I looked back in rear view mirror law enforcement was safely stopped in wide grass median to left and outside of vehicle looking at the bumper sprawled across his hood. Hopefully his dash cam was always on because that will be hard to explain to mechanic because he did not have his blue lights on prior to getting hit.
Coming home I took alternate route and first ha ha moment was when we stopped for gas in Augusta and I had to call my sister’s passenger’s cell that her dress was hanging out of bottom of pickup’s drivers door because I knew my sister would not pick up cell call when driving.
So this morning after I picked up my boarding ‘starving’ dog –I had told vet tech she would not eat while boarding when I dropped her off as she normally does not eat at home when I am gone and she did not–but she polished her dry food bowl while I booted computer up and read this snippet.
Thank you for this snippet.
I also read what you said about book sales and I did understand what you were saying. There are some authors that I only read on nc digital library since it is 30 minutes drive minimum to my nearest public library. But I do not buy these authors books because I do not read and re-read their books like I do yours and a few other authors. However, because I do think that you write well I do recommend that digital library and ‘local’ library purchase your books (electronic for digital library and paperback for ‘local’ library) and they do because I recommend rarely.

Ok. So I had a bizarre thought. Evil Grandma (commonly known as EG) tried to pull the whole Virgin Mary with a being from the astral plane (a minor god). But the gifts skipped a generation. Nevada got the truth of god (probably used to pass judgement). Catalina got the ability to create worshipers (originally meant to fuel the other abilities). And, Arabella got the divine aspect (creature form). Of course I came up with because I have been doing a full re-read of the Kate Daniels series whilst I await Wildfire. Now that I have written it out, it just doesn’t seem to fit in this world.

Interesting!!!

That is a scary cool thought!
My idea was that she used a suitable sperm donor and rather than use a surrogate, she had a uterus sized pocket in the arcane realm created to bring him to term.

I have Trudeau as my Prime. Does that qualify me for another snippet?? Pretty pretty please with chocolate coated cherry filled dumplings on top of triple chocolate fudge French silk pie cake? (Think there’s enough chocolate in my offering for a successful summoning of another snippet?) Lol

Nice try.

It’s hot here for NYC (94F yesterday) and our air conditioning is broken. Does that qualify for a snippet? 😉
sarafina says
Since you have THE JUSTIN you owe US another snippet!!!!!
Patience says
Re-read White Hot yesterday (3rd time) for content as opposed to plot. I dreamt of dragons and Arabella’s possibilities last night. Hmmmm…
Donna says
I did the same! And I may have to reread it again before Wildfire.

I can’t wait!? I’m late to the Ilona Andrews fan base. I learned of them by Jeaniene Frost . Which I just finished all her books. I guess I’d been lost all these years. I started with the Hidden Legacy series… Which book should I have started with? I’d love to start from the beginning. Can’t wait to meet all 3 authors on 07/27 in Orlando for the book signing ?
Patience says
Burn For Me is first book.
BlondieB (Kathy from Aus) says
Start with kate daniels series so cool lol
Monina Cabanada says
🙂 I would recommend that you get all the books in The Edge series (4 books).
lynn says
Well, Jennifer, what I know of Jeanine Frost is that she writes about vampires. I do not read vampire stories but I have a sib that does who has read Ms. Frost’s works. So, I suggest as BlondieB does to start with Kate Daniels series. Kate is a strong heroine and the stories are progressive not episodic. I personally found Curran POVs hilarious and greatly additive to the individual books. The NC digital library has the complete KD series now. Your local library might have the complete series in paperback or might not. If not then they can get via Inter Library Loan. I would advise you to read the KD series from book 1. Hugh’s book which is due out sometime and has been a serial on Ilona Andrews blog would not be a good place to start.
The Hidden Legacy series starts with Burn for Me which was first published in 2014. White Hot is book 2 and Wildfire is book 3 which is due out this end of July. No vampires but a well written progressive story.
The Edge series are episodic and stand alone. The Innkeeper series are a progressive storyline but can be a little hard to follow at times.
Whichever you chose I think you will find the stories are well crafted / written. For Curran and Rogan (male heroes similar to Bones in Frost’s Cat and Bones series or Dark’s Christian Poe in Crossbreed series [whom my sib tells me is most similar to Bones]) POVs you will need to look on Ilona Andrews website. Good reading.

Thank you, thank you! This is a grim week for me,politics aside. WHile I was out, I had a heart attack, 6x cardiac bypass, then 2 strokes. I am now back at work part time. My job is literally killing me, and it is not the work it’s the sh*t that comes from working with people all high on their own power.
THia was a lovely laugh out loud break!
sarafina says
Hope you get better, and things improve at your job.
lynn says
Yes I know what you mean about working with power mad/ hungry/ tripping people. I was very fortunate that I got fired before I had a heart attack or a nervous breakdown after working 14 years for the same company– the last 4 were pressure cooker/ stress city. Then I got good competent counseling for all the anger and other negative emotions I had suppressed. I also handed off parental eldercare to sibling after 10 years as counselor said I needed a long vacation for me, myself and I. She also said I needed to relearn to give myself and my health priority not everyone else. My only firing regret (beyond in past 3 years since I was fired I have been replaced 7 times and I was in last position for 4 years) was the loss of nearly 400 sick hours. I got paid for the accumulated vacation time but I had been saving sick time for years because I was rarely sick and I could use 40 hours of sick time for elder hospitalization rather than vacation time.
I went back to school and retooled while living on money from selling all the company stock I had accumulated thru 14 years. I had enjoyed what I did my last 4 years at that company but my boss and other bosses made things extremely stressing and dealing with public was frustrating because my hands were tied by company policy and boss. I have a very different standard of living now but my blood pressure medicine has been halved twice and I have lost weight and kept it off. I am still pre diabetic but my blood work looks so much better that my doctor no longer says I am a heart attack waiting to happen. I get a thrill out of doing temp work as I go in do job and I come home. no work politics. no sudden unexplained unanticipated overtime.
So step back and look at your job. look at your life– professionally and personally. Preform the needed legwork to make the changes you need to make to live healthy and enjoy your one life. Do not forget to savor life’s pleasures such as being able to read Ilona Andrews.

<3 this one is going to be way bigger than the previous two!
anainasia says
so on my 3rd read of white hot – and also read burn for me again this week – got to the big fancy party last night.
some observations:
1. it was Rynda who started the whole distraction not her mum!
2. the guy who approaches here about the domestic abuse – sorry I am horrible with names, we get introduced to his whole family – so he will play a role I think – on which team – well will find out I guess.
3. many people think the guy in the elevator is the evil one, I guess he could be truly (tested by Nevada) sad about Cornelius’s loss and still be the evil guy – but somehow it doesn’t ring for me. might be wrong.
Teresa says
Rynda? I didn’t even consider her. Oh, truly sneaky and very interesting.
lynn says
1. I agree with 1 as nothing ever really said about Rynda’s father just her mother Olivia. I actually thought about how controlling Olivia was and her anger with Rogan for not following HER plans to marry HER daughter. Rynda is empath and TK like Rogan not a manipulator like Olivia. I think she knows Rogan does not love her but he was her intended per her mother for many, many years. I wonder if Brian Sherwood is a dark horse like David Howling was or if he is dead now that Olivia is dead.
2. Micheal Latimer. I would like to see Rogan’s assessment of him. We know Augustine thought he had a motive other than domestic violence victim rescue and he did not feel threatened by Rogan.
3. Linus Duncan. I have a feeling that Howling and Charles’s Caesar may not be aware of being their Caesar. I have dealt with a number of political groups enough to understand that what the left hand is doing the right can be totally unaware of and if the right hand was aware they would find action repugnant.

Love, love love everything Ilona Andrews and have read every snippet, special and novel I could find!? But I am not a keen re-reader… Someone please remind me: what is Arabella’s magic again? It has been a while in between the first two Hidden Legacy books for me… I know Catalina creates worshippers (who can turn into stalkers or worse) but for the life of me, I can’t remember what the third sister does…? maybe I have to re-read “Burn for Me” after all… which when I really think about it, is a win/win situation after all… but please feel free to fill me in anyways! ???
Dinah Yonas says
*except for “Alphas: Origins”, t h a t I’ve re-read several times, hoping and praying and longing for a sequel… ? I know, I know… it’s not in the cards… yet…
sarafina says
Apparently Arabella transforms into something very large and monstrous.
DavidWD says
We think she has another form (transforms into a demon or a dragon or somthing). The form required an exit larger than 20 feet and could carry her sister while sprinting a good distance. It is never demonstrated and only hinted at twice in Wildfire.
anainasia says
you mean hinted at in white hot – and then in the wildfire snippets above we find out that there is been someone like her before – but he went crazy or something. because he couldn’t control it..
Dinah Yonas says
Aha… thanks DavidWD! ??
A-Wall says
I love this series, you are one of the few authors I follow and buy every book to reread a thousand times! I cannot wait for the new book in July! It will be a belated birthday present!
Henry King says
I’m going over the left field wall to the left of the foul line for this. Matilda recognizes Empaths and does wonders with Bunny. I think she will make a strong connection with Rynda and bring her dad and Rynda together. Yes, I am assuming Rynda’s husband is dead.
She may have started the diversion at the party, but it was instigated by her mother.
lynn says
The party diversion was instigated by Olivia and I agree that Rynda was her bait for Rogan. Rynda cares too much for Rogan and social acceptance to have instigated the diversion.
yes I think Brian Sherwood is dead too. whether at Olivia’s instigation or not I do not know.
I will have to think about Matilda and Rynda and Cornelius romance. Good thought. We do know that Nari Harrison was an unregistered empath. The question become how much has Olivia shaped/ manipulated Rynda?
well, just a little over a month left before we find out.
FCina says
I think it will take a full book devoted to Cornelius and Rynda to bring about successful courtship since he killed her mother with extreme prejudice. Logically, I am onboard, but the emotional toll throughout will be very high.
Oona says
Bit of a question with Arabella… the clue was that only one other person had done this form, and they went “insane”… first thing that pops into my head is… Christopher from KD and his Avatar. I mean… it kind of fits, I think? Of course, could be a dragon, or T. Rex Sue LOL….
Patience says
If Rynda/her mom committed the diversion, they would have had to have known that Rogan, et. al., were coming and that the collector guy (sorry, can’t think of his name right now) was a loose end they needed to clean up. I wonder how they knew? Did I miss something?
Giota says
spoiler maybe?!!
Ok so….I think Caesar is Lenora!!!!! Crazy right??
Mandikins says
Any thoughts on where Augustine’s perfectionist secretary went? Last we saw her, she was helping Nevada put on the Highwayman costume for her interrogation. Then Nevada notices a new male assistant on her recent visit to the shark fin.
Could she have been a plant for either the Ceasar Coalition or Grandma Bitch?
Anainasia says
I think Augustine gave her a break so evil grandma could not get into her head.
Simone says
They replaced her with another person at her desk who had never met or heard of Nevada before. That way when Evil Grandma showed up she could not get anything out of them.
