It was brought to our attention that Comey is testifying, and, for the love of all that’s holy, a snippet is needed. It is here for you, when you are ready for a real life break.
“I agree,” Bern said. “We’re not doing that.”
“We can fight,” I said. “Victoria has more money, more troops, and more of everything.”
“But Rogan would help us, right?” Arabella asked.
I struggled with the right words. “Yes. But we can’t always count on Rogan.” Strictly speaking, that was a lie. Rogan would do anything and everything to help me.
“We shouldn’t always count on Rogan,” Mom said.
Everyone looked at her.
“This isn’t his problem,” she said. “It’s our problem.”
“If we let Rogan save us, we’ll be tying ourselves to him,” I said. “We’d be viewed as his vassals. We’d have his protection, but we would inherit his enemies, and he has some powerful ones.”
“And if your relationship with Rogan sours, things will get complicated,” Bern said.
“Yes.”
“So we don’t want to give up and we can’t fight the Evil Grandma. Is there a third option?” Arabella asked.
“Yes. We can become a House.”
My sisters and cousins stared at me. I’d brought up this possibility once before, but we were kind of busy at the time trying to solve a murder and accomplishing other important things like not getting killed.
“Whoa.” Leon blinked.
“No,” Mom said. “There has to be another way.”
I leaned back. “Becoming a House would grant us provisional immunity from any attacks by other Houses for three years. That’s long enough for us to establish a power base.”
“Would Victoria follow that rule?” Catalina asked.
“Rogan says she will. It’s in everyone’s best interest to protect emerging Houses, because otherwise inbreeding would become a real danger. Apparently, this is one of those rules Primes won’t break under any circumstances. It would buy us time to build up our power base and make alliances and do all the things Houses do.”
“You can’t be serious,” Mom said.
“I am.”
“She isn’t going to obey any rules. That woman is a monster. You can’t be that naive, Nevada.” I met my mother’s gaze. “Yes, she may still attack us. But she will have to do it in a way that can’t lead back to her. Becoming a House would make it much harder for her to hit us.”
And once we became a House, we could make alliances as equals.
“You’re filling their heads with visions of being a House. Why don’t you tell them what it’s really like? Tell them about Baranovsky.”
“Mom is right,” I said. “Houses are vicious. You remember that charity gala I went to in the black dress? It was very exclusive. The man who hosted it, Gabriel Baranovsky, was drinking champagne at the top of the stairs in the ballroom. David Howling froze the wine in Gabriel’s throat. He turned it into a blade that sliced Gabriel’s neck from inside out.”
“Badass,” Leon offered.
We all looked at him.
“It’s elegant,” he said. “The ice melts, and there is no evidence. There are no prints, no murder weapon, there is nothing.”
I had to tell him about his magic. There just wasn’t any escaping it. That’s the way his mind worked and there was no way to rewire him. Maybe I could just get it over with now.
My mother cleared her throat and hit me with a warning stare. It’s like she was telepathic or something.
tai says
How about option four…marry Rogan! :p
Amber says
I want more than 3 books that might wrap the series too quickly unless it’s like the Edge Series and we see everyone’s story later?
Bin says
Would marrying rogan just protect her though and not her sisters and family …. cause they arent technically her dependants … therefore that would leave them vunerable and Nevada would never do that
sarafina says
Rogan would not leave anyone Nevada cared about vulnerable. AND they’d get Rogan’s enemies also!!
Jeanette Krebs says
Marrying Rogan won’t stop her evil grandmother. Go read the explanation/q and a thingy the Authorlords put up the other day. ?
Sam says
Where is that?
Mike says
Excellent can’t wait for the whole thing!! You guys are the best!
Mike says
Does it get explained in Wildfire why Nevada, Catalina and Arabellas magics all seem different as I would have thought they would have similar ones?
Ilona says
Yes.
gastongirl says
oooOOOOOOooooo!..
Amanda says
I’m betting on Evil Grandma messing with arcane entities…
Patience says
Oh I never thought of that. Good point.
Liz says
My guess is it tracks back to evil Grandma’s experiments on dad/to have children.
Laurence says
Yeap, same theory… which would explain Arabella. And actually maybe also Catalina who has angelic powers ?
Rena says
I can see a scene where the mage from the other side summons another huge monster like the giant maggot from the arcane realm and Arabella shifts into her form to battle it.
Nevada would go nuts trying to stop the cops from shooting at Arabella during and after the fight.
Majka says
Maybe it has to do with the way their Dad was made up. Something summoning-like…
Erin says
Ahhh, relief!
Sleepy says
Thank you for the snippet!!!
If i may ask… What exactly is Leon’s gift? I read White Hot but I didnt 100% get it 😛
Mary Beth says
I think Leon sees death, like a valkyrie. Just a guess though.
Tink says
I’m thinking of it like threat assessment. He can see all the potential threats, so offensively he can figure out how to exploit a potential risk, and defensively he can figure out how to protect against a potential risk. He would be a HUGE asset in any military operation.
Elise Logan says
100% agree with Tink on this – it seems specific to physical harm. The way it was described in the fire fight, he could tell who was going to go down next in the firefight – almost like precognition, but in a very specific venue. The way it was explained, instead of precognition, it’s an ability to read the potential threats, angles, and possible outcomes in a split second in a way that looks like precognition because it happens so fast.
Pat Sciarini says
Isn’t that similar to what Rogan’s father was trying to do when he married Rogan’s mother? Threat prediction?
Patience says
How about a military strategist?
Jenny Green says
Assassin? Able to assess best way to kill someone
kelticat says
Makes you wonder what his bio-mom does for a living, especially if she has sniper magic.
Tink says
That brings up a point? Has it ever been mentioned if Bern’s and Leon’s mom has magic? Her sister and both parents did. If so, I wonder what kind?
sarafina says
Yes, she’s Grandma Frida’s daughter. It’s in the FAQ or somewhere on the HL page.
Tink says
I know who she is. I meant, has it ever been mentioned if she has magic?
Julia says
I agree. I think Nevada thinks his magic will lead him to be an assassin. That’s why she doesn’t want to tell him. I am hoping that there may be more nuances to his magic that we haven’t seen yet that may take him down another path.
Julie says
Professional billiard player. Or professional golfer. 😉
ara says
I dunno. Just because you can predict where a projectile is going doesn’t mean you can aim and make it go that way.
Drew says
Oh, thank you God and the Authorlords. I needed this.
SoCoMom says
I will Amen and second that. Thank you!!!
Judy says
Amen,,,
It was an awful day,,, now I’m much better
Violet says
Thank You
Val says
Thank you Ilona & Andrew. Much appreciated. Looking forward to hearing the rest of the story from Renee Raudman. Unless of course there are more snippets between now and July 25th. Yes, please.
Pallavi says
Lordy, but your books are fun… ???
Teresa Hughes says
Thank you, thank you. I am becoming more impatient for Wildfire’s release. I hope it is a bigger hit than White Hot and Burn for Me combined.
Robin C says
Oh yes, Leon’s brain is…interesting. And worrying too. *sets and waits for book day like cat in front of a mouse hole*
Tink says
I thought the cat analogy was in regards to how Leon’s mind works, especially the worrying part. Then I realized you were describing yourself.
Elizabeth says
Describes me perfectly ?
KathyInAiken says
Can I come over and cook lovely meals and cookies for you? Just let me read everything that you write each day. Of course, I live a few hundred mupiles away so I need room and board also.
Ilona says
Okay. 🙂
Beesocks says
I can microwave things and open cans, and I’m local 😛
Tink says
Wait, that’s an option?!? I have a brother who lives in San Antonio, so I could make the 90+ minute commute every day.
Of course, I’m not much of a cook and I hate to clean, so I could, you know, stare at you all day. How does that sound?
Patience says
Count me in!
Ange in Oz says
I read your comment just then and almost spat out my mouthful of tea. While at my hairdresser. Your comment was gold! ???
Ange in Oz says
Tink’s comment about staring, not Patience’s reply!
Tink says
Just picture me and the cats sitting in a row, all staring at Ilona as she types.
Patricia Schlorke says
That would freak Ilona out or make her laugh so hard she wouldn’t be able to write. Good idea or not? Let the BDH decide.
Kim R. says
I love this family and I can’t wait to read this book!
Tim Muszalski says
Need more snippets cliffhangers are killing me I must know the end
Kathryn the almost Great says
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Yes, I needed this today.
I wonder if “whatever” Evil Grandmother did to create her son is the reason behind his three daughters have vastly different magic. Will we ever learn what she did to have a son?
I know, the answer is Wildfire. I don’t suppose you have a time machine around here somewhere? So we can jump to July 25th already?
Tink says
Sadly, changing the date on your PC doesn’t work. I tried. ::sigh::
Patricia Schlorke says
Can’t shake my Nook to get the date to change fast enough either. 🙁
Kathryn the almost Great says
I know, Tink. I tried that too. :sigh:
Korinne says
Thank you Authorlords! You are kind and generous <3
wont says
Once again, happiness or pain….let’s see, which is it? IDK. But the snippets are so luscious, I guess I will risk being a bit more crazy for this book!
Thank you for taking pity on us. Of course anytime you feel like more is warranted, we all would be grateful.
Ruby says
Book 2 is #6/11 on the NYT bestseller list. That says to me that, while urban fantasy sales overall may be declining, YOUR urban fantasy sales are not. So I’m pushing for books 4-6.
Char says
Thank you both and I to am lobbying for books 4 to 6! Happy Snippet!
Omar Mtz says
This is becoming an addiction, but I can’t wait for the book to come out next month!!!! T.T
Christine says
Snippets just keep getting better and better ?
I have a question about Caesar, in WH it says it is someone unexpected, is Caesar a woman? A name popped into my head when I read that part of the book…but I might be totally wrong!?! ?
Amelie says
Love the snippet! Also love how we readers claimed the “Comey tesfying” loophole to get you to post this haha.
Eva R says
Is this the last snippet in chapter 2? If not, about how many snippets will there be?
I love the books in general, and am obsessed with the snippets in particular. Thank you so much!
sarafina says
I’m hoping for a final piece on Friday.
Nifty says
How about…ten lines a day every day until release day. That would translate to about ten pages of the book between now and then. ?
Leigh Rathbone says
Just what I need on election day. Thank you. Leon is a sweet little brother character that you just want to protect.
cmc says
You guys are amazing. Thank you for these snippets, they’re a breath of fresh air
Rebecca says
Thank you!
MONICA b says
I love the way Leon’s mind works. I’m on the morbid side and I totally get him. Leon has my vote for his own book when he’s older.
Helen Wawrejko says
I really like this world you both have made. Also Innkeeper, and Kate, and magic, and, and…wow I guess I like it all. Keep on, keeping on, my favorite authors. Tell Gordon I really like it when he channels Curan.
Vibha says
Hallelujah! Thank you for that bit of awesomeness to end the week!?
Donna Taylor Zink says
Loving this series! Please think about continuing it even if Avon bows out of future books. Self-published books are a beautiful thing!
Nina says
Thank you so much!!
Nineran says
Oooh, Leon’s only viable job is as an assassin? No wonder they want him to figure out where his lines are before he actually figures out what his magic is!!
And I do hope Nevada makes an alliance as an equal with Rogan 🙂
ALSO thank you! I needed this today!
Demi says
It is so easy to fall into this story and RL is quietly slipping away.
You are good for my soul dear authorlords . Thank you!
gingko-girl says
My brain was hurting from listening to hearing — this helped so much.
Not sure which has me more excited, first grand baby or Wildfire release!
Baby will be here first for sure so I can enjoy both to the fullest!
Thanks for snippety goodness.
Gail says
Thank you for any and all snippets. Love how Leon thinks, it’s elegant , logical and somewhat creepy at the same time. He seems to be a old soul who has been through many battles and has seen too much.
Love the whole family and can’t wait for the evil grandmother and all the Baylor ladies to meet .Maybe for tea and crumpets!!!
Charis N. says
Thank for this shot of light on a dreary dark day.
Maritza says
I’ve reread/ relistened to the story too many times to count. Super excited about the next episode. I hope it’s not only a 3 bk series
Wendy Saf says
You know, you could release a snippet a day every day until Wildfire comes out and we would still buy the book. And the audiobook. In case you had any doubts . . .
Also, thanks for this snippet. It rocked!
Frances says
Yes I agree 100% with Wendy. Even if we had 2-3 snippets per week we would still buy the book and the audiobook.
Tink says
Pretty much my experience with the Innkeeper series, although it was paperback and ebook instead of the audiobook.
HM says
I doubt that Avon would allow this though…
barbie doll says
I am very interested in the way that Nevada’s Mom is acting and reacting. She must realize that they cannot hide anymore. Makes me wonder what else the Mom and Dad did to stay hidden and what will come back to haunt them. I also don’t think that EG will follow any rules. When you think you are God why should you follow rules for lesser people. Very interesting.
Pat says
Yes she does realize they can’t hide anymore but becoming a house does two things:
1 It shields them from EG for THREE years.
2 It puts a bulls eye on them from every other house out there trying to make a name for themselves It becomes even more dangerous to try and live normally from simple eating out eg. Rogan mom’s cousin,
sarafina says
It shields them from “every other house” for three years. And they don’t seem to eat out that much, remember Nevada picking up sushi?
Natasha Johnson says
Did Nevada talk with Curran about how to manipulate them to doing what she wants ??!! Thank y’all so much for the snippet!
Kathryn the almost Great says
OMG! I didn’t catch that the first time I read this. But you’re correct, Natasha, Nevada is talking a page from Curran by giving them the worst options first, and following them with what she wants.
Ara says
aww, you guys are awesome <3 Thanks, heaps 😀
Oona says
Leon = a Prime Assassin trained to work for House Baylor? I mean, what he does is more than simply sharpshooting… some sort of wonderful whatthefuckery! to quote Bug. And the way he thinks? Strategic, threat assessment, info based and yes, able to recognize patterns at super high speeds – just *not quite* the way Bernard does… Heh. Who’d a thunk it?
Henry King says
A male Meli. Remember her from Silent Blade?
Tink says
A male Sophie, but with a bullet instead of a blade.
Natasha Johnson says
That’s a scary thought!! Haha
Pat Sciarini says
Thank you! So much than Comey! And, any excuse for a snippet works for me!
Judy says
Thank you,,,,
joan says
Ahhh. So it’s going to be Léon: The Professional. 🙂
Tink says
Good movie, as I recall.
joan says
Yep. very good. Great debut for Natalie Portman, and we’re probably dating ourselves. 🙂 Makes me wonder if Leon’s name is an Easter egg or something.
SusKie says
Gahh.. after reading this. I cannot sleep. Is it July yet? O_o”
Sara T says
I was not expecting this! What a fabulous Thursday surprise!!
Loved it. Can’t wait for Wildfire 🙂
kelticat says
And now for something lighthearted. During Innkeeper some of us were coming up with theme songs for the characters. They can fit personality, powers, or both. Here’s my take for some of the characters of HL.
Nevada – True Colors by Cyndi Lauper
Catalina- Thunderstruck by ACDC
Aribella – It’s my Life by Bon Jovi
Penelope- Sorrow is a Woman by Def Leppard
Frida- Overdrive by Steam Powered Giraffe
Victoria – Bad Reputation by Joan Jett
Conner- When the Walls Come Tumbling Down by Def Leppard
Cornelius – Bounce by Bon Jovi
Matilda- I Got the Girl by Bon Jovi
Nari – Mysterious Ways by U2
Bug- Malfunction by Steam Powered Giraffe
Dr. Arias- Bloody Sunday by U2
Some are based on name of the songs, others are based on lyrics, but these are songs that fit the character for me. Everyone is welcome to come up with their own interpretations or songs for the characters that I didn’t list.
Jenette says
What about Def Leppard’s “Bad Actress” for Harper?
Tink says
You missed Leon. How about “Bad to the Bone”? It’s not what he is (yet) but what he really wants to be.
Patricia Schlorke says
How about “I Won’t Back Down” by Tom Petty? That fits Leon fairly well as your suggestion, Tink.
Patricia Schlorke says
How about Evil Woman by ELO for Victoria Tremaine?
Patricia Schlorke says
It could also be for Kelley, Rogan’s cousin.
Tink says
I just heard the song Bad Reputation this morning on the drive into work. I was thinking that would work for Rogan, too.
Lynne says
All mothers are telepathic, aren’t they? 😉
Ami says
Thank you most gracious AuthorLords for the snippet. And omg the places you choose to stop will be the death of me. In your defense I’m not sure there’s such a thing as a “good” stopping point in my world. Lol
Rene says
This was so Great! Thank you!
charisN says
What happened to Lina? I hope she shows up in Wildfire. she worked as hard on her appearance as Augustine does on his. She was Edgery (?)
Carolina says
Oh man. I love it! Thank you!
So annoyed that they don’t want to tell Leon.
Rachel says
Hmmm.. that last part makes me think Penelope a dual with 2 magics..
Tina Black says
She’s a mother. Telepathy comes on as the placenta comes out.
Patricia Schlorke says
Mothers also get eyes in the back of their heads.
Samantha says
Lol
Nifty says
LOL
Rhonda says
Exactly.
Alice says
Exactly :)))
Karen the Griffmom says
Yuppers.
Carol says
LOL Tina!
Lisa L says
I think you mentioned that Catalina and Arabella were fashioned after your own daughters. If that’s so, did they have some input into the characters, like their types of magic?
Beverly says
Would love to see/know what type of animal Arabella becomes. ??? A Dragon. LOL… or the mythical creature. .. my imagination is running with this one.
Carol says
I’m very curious to see that too! It sounds like an actual transformation due to all the threats of cages.
Oona says
Balrog?? Lol ?
Skylar says
Great question!
Mel says
I needed this, thank you!
Tina Black says
I gotta say, the thought of Rogan tossing the vehicle they arrive in and thus turning them to hamburger is very attractive. What do you mean I sound like Leon?
Patricia Schlorke says
Thank you for the surprise snippet. Yippee!
Shauna says
I’m sorry. I kinda sorta understand Leon’s magic, but…… yeah I need a little more help. Anyone?
Ilona says
Think about being able to throw a ball exactly the right way. Like you had the ball in your hand and you could picture how you wanted it to fly and then threw it in the exact same way. So if you wanted it to bounce off the side of the house, hit a car, then bounce from the pavement, and land by a specific tree, you could do it all in a fraction of a second. That’s what he does, except for him it’s about shooting people.
Jenette says
So, if it’s automatic for him, does that mean this aspect of his talent falls into the passive field, like Nevada’s ability to detect lies? I wonder what the “active” aspect of his abilities looks like. 0_0 No wonder Nevada is worried about telling him. The could have a William on their hands!
Lynn-Marie says
A William?
Jenette says
William Wolf, from the Edge series. His book was “Bayou Moon”, but he has appearances throughout the series.
Pika says
Omg O_O He’s basically one hell of a badass and genius assassin if he wants to be one O_O
Could the “picturing doing things” be the passive field and “doing those things and succeed” the active field ?
Tink says
So instead of “nothing but net” it’s “nothing but brains”? 😛
Mac says
William Tell reference?
Jenette says
William Wolf from the Edge series
Teresa die hard fan says
Bayou Moon was a favourite. Remember Lark.
Tink says
No. Michael Jordan vs Larry Bird for the McDonald’s food reference. “Off the billboard, across the highway, over the building, in the window, off the floor, nothing but net.” Or something like that.
Jenette says
ROFL. It’s so gruesome. It shouldn’t be funny, but it is!
Maria says
His ability reminds of the Scyfy TV series Alphas where a character had “the superhuman ability of “hyperkinesis”, which allows his brain to process movement at a much faster rate than others. This gives him amazing athletic feats of timing, superhuman reflexes and perfect accuracy with firearms or thrown objects and also allows him, for example, to predict trajectory by eyesight” per wikipedia
Teresa die hard fan says
I wonder if this is the reason he isn’t allowed a gun?
strangejoyce says
Like BBC Sherlock..”a highly functioning sociopath”? Or perhaps a fear of him becoming a psychopath? Especially if the military grabs him.
Emma L says
As I understand it, he just hasn’t been allowed a gun so far because of his age, and trying to protect his childhood or some such. That seems to have been a longstanding thing, but they only found out about his magic recently.
Of course, it probably explains why he _wants_ the gun – it’s the passive magic at work, like the example in the book of searching for water in the desert. He is always “seeing” the shots, and wants to try them out.
sarafina says
When they were trying to get Cornelius to move in with Nevada, she said (besides Penelope’s and Frida’s qualifications) that the 4 teenagers knew how to use guns.
Beesocks says
It made me think of Vash the Stampede, from Trigun
Rasmusb says
Like RDJ’s Sherlock movie predicting the fight sequence but with bullet trajectories?
Very cool. But considering how killing doesn’t sit well with Nevada, I can understand why she’s leery about telling him that it’s his special gift.
ALSO THANKS FOR THE SNIPPET!
Booklover says
I think it’s about being able to do everything you want to do and not being forced to do something because of your magic. Not being limited by your magic and discover what you actually like to do. Like Nevada and her magic.
Her parents wanted to protect her from the fate of an interrogator. She wants to protect him from becoming an assassin extraordinair.
Joan says
Like in the movie Wanted (Jolie, McAvoy), when they were bending/curving the trajectory of bullets.
wiedzma_florentyna says
I do understand that it would make him great potential assasin.
What I don’t understand is why everybody seems to think its an only career path abailable with this kind of magic?
Layla says
It’s like playing pool, but with bullets. It’s all angles and bounce, speed, velocity…
Have you watched Suicide Squad? Leon is Deadshot.
Liz V says
I was thinking the same thing. Why couldn’t he go into security strategy, to help people prevent assassinations type deal?
Katherine says
Does Leon’s power only manifest around guns? Does this mean he got his power from Grandpa Leon and not Grandma Frida?
Looks like Nevada’s going to keep mum about Leon’s power. On one hand, she ought to remember that keeping secrets from Baylors only results in hurt feelings once the secret comes out. On the other hand, Penelope is Leon’s legal mother (since the Authorlords have said Nevada’s parents legally adopted Bern and Leon), so Penelope’s decision should trump Nevada’s when it comes to Leon.
sarafina says
So could this work in reverse, and make Leon the absolutely best protection guy on the planet? Or does it only work in combat?
And Penelope may be making a mistake here with Leon, like her leaving Nevada ignorant of Nevada’s magic too long. Rogan told Nevada she was a Prime, not her mom.
Sally says
Um a question re Leon’s power, your explanation focused on shooting but in the snippet he analyses the advantages of assassination by ice, does that mean he can calculate the best way to kill someone by any means?
Thank you for the snippet as you mentioned it was much needed, though its not testimony against Trump, but a hung election dominating the news in the UK.
Nean says
If i’m understanding correctly Leon’s power isn’t just about being able to predict angles. He was watching a full team of agents reacting to the attackers and was able to accurately predict who was going to get hit next. He isn’t just tracking what his moves could be, he is estimating how others are reacting and simultaneously tracking it all. I’m waiting to see how this comes out. I understand the hesitation as Leon is so hyped up about battle and wanting to have a skill that his family worries he would embrace this without thinking it through and end up trapped. But it seems it would be better to have those discussions with him before he discovers it on his own and makes uninformed decisions. Or before some nefarious person notices and snatches him up unprepared.
SJ says
Why would it just be bullets? Couldn’t it apply to pool or car accidents or anything with vectors?
Oona says
Battle mage?? Uber general material?? prime assassin??
AngelMercury says
Ahhh~~ so quickly I was finished reading it. Not telling Leon is going to bite them in the butt for sure now. So frustrating.
Candice says
I was trying not to read this but my morning routine was interupted by Kid 1 missing his bus and Kid 2 realising she wasn’t done with a project due today. Drove Kid 1 to school while he fed kid 3 breakfast in the backseat as kid 2 finished her project with google’s help on my phone. And traffic is hell.
This snippet and a cup of tea was much needed to reset and relax me. Thank you so much!
Mary D says
Thank you! It was a wonderful momentary distraction!
Pika says
Thanks for this part ! (*try not to look at the countdown timer*
Tricia P says
Thanks so much for this snippet! It is greatly appreciated! I definitely needed a real life break, been dealing with family drama the last couple days (my mother could probably give Roland AND Evil Grandmother a run for their money)!! Can’t wait for this book!! ?
Rachel says
We’ve the election here in the UK and I fear its not going to end well or with much change for the better given the vicious smear campaign peddled by the mainstream right wing media. So thanks for a much needed boost of joy- yay snippet time!
Catlover says
oh yes we love election happiness. It is my opinion all candidates should be limited to a one sheet newspaper ad listing what they voted for, their policy stand, their qualifications, and a rebuttal ad. That’s it! No multimillion campaign funds.
Sharon says
According to SCOTUS, money does not influence elections (see People’s United).
Aydee says
I seriously wish we could have a Nevada in real life so that he/she/they can hit a buzzer at political/presidential debates! BUA HAHAHAHA!
Jenette says
Oh, could you imagine? They might be the shortest elections ever, with no one being able to speak more than a word before getting buzzed!
Ericka says
I keep advocating for shock collars that debates but they won’t let me. *pouts*
Patience says
That would be perfect.
Helen Holck says
Brilliant. That sounds wonderful. No need for election fiance reform.
Anne Schult says
I agreed
Layla says
We have that already. People are starting to fact check real time the President.
It’s useless if half your voting populace believes facts are a subjective liberal conspiracy, like ours does.
Patience says
I second that!
Zarmina says
Thanks for the reprieve from real life ,can’t wait for it to be published
Zas says
Thank you for the chapter!! In reading this it makes me think that this chapter isn’t quite done yet…
Lynnmerick says
Ah man, I really want Leno to know about his powers…and I really want to read this book. How about a contest for all readers born on December 28th? ?
Korinne says
We’re birthday buddies! *virtual high five*
MaryH says
Thank you!!!
Simone says
I had thought that Nevada would tell the family that in addition to not seeing them until Evil Grandma dies in 10 or 20 years (assuming EG gets her hands on them) that she and Catalina would be expected to get married and start producing at least 2 but not more than 3 Prime Babies. I would think that would convince the family to start their own House 🙂
Thanks for the snippet. My appetite for the book is fully whetted. I will be ravenous for it when it comes out 🙂
Teresa die hard fan says
I hope Nevada and Rogan get married and have 5 or 6 kids. Rogan gets to be stay at home dad. Hehehe
Laurie says
I bet their kids will have wacky cool magic. I think all those arraigned DNA marriages are selling them short.
Booklover says
Did you post that on Herald?
Tink says
Can you imagine the poor boys who want to date Rogan’s daughters? O_O
Julia says
Part of me is also wondering about the offers they’ll get after/if they form their own House. Nevada’s powers are pretty desirable, so I have a feeling she’s goig to have to beat off marriage proposals constantly just to keep Rogan from loosing it. If people get the deets on Catalina’s magic, Houses will be trying to arrange marriages with her left and right. I mean, since we’ve seen Conner’s parents arrange a marriage for their three year old child–and Catalina is 17(right?)– People are going to be rushing to arrange a marriage with her. The nature of her powers makes it so much more complicated tho! I could see a House trying to manipulate her into a marriage contract and Catalina straight out telling them that if they force her into a loveless marriage she’ll use every iota of her powers to fill that marriage with love, thereby turning their son into her unconditionally devote slave. All those House Primes would run for the hills! I could also imagine Catalina finding someone who isn’t affected by her powers at all–just like her family isn’t–and knowing that she found her Love.
Katherine says
That would still apply if they establish their own House, wouldn’t it? That’s why Rogan doesn’t think their relationship will have a future if House Baylor becomes reality, right?
Fan in California says
Bless you for bring so considerate . . . and making me laugh out loud with your opening comment!! You are a god send. Thanks!!!!
Darlene Brown says
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Rohaise says
What a nice surprise. Yes, we probably do need a break from reality today. Thank you!
Karen says
I missed the chapter 1 post. Can someone link it please?
sarafina says
It’s in the back of the paperback White Hot, I don’t know if people can link from Kindle, if it is in the Kindle version.
Karen says
Arg! I just bought the audible.
Karen says
Just read chapter 1!!!! Thanks for the heads up.
Charis N. says
It’s in the Kindle.
Ericka says
It’s in white hot, at the back.
Karen says
Thanks ladies!
sarafina says
If possible, go to a Barnes and Noble and read the end of the book while standing in the aisle.
Alice says
Me too 🙁
Avril says
Thank you. It was wonderful as always.

Awesome snippet!
I was thinking about buying the paperback of Burn for Me to loan to a friend. (I have the Kindle version and the Audible version but these are hard to lend out. I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE?) Burn for Me is sold out on Amazon until June 15!
And….as I was looking back at the preview of White Hot at the end of Burn for Me, I realized that it is a different scene than the beginning of White Hot! The excerpt shows Lina and Augustine helping Nevada into her Lady in Green costume… Very cool.
Teresa die hard fan says
You are right and I did not notice.
Tink says
I noticed it, but I thought that had been a snippet provided on the blog. I didn’t remember it being at the end of the first book.
Olga says
love it!
Kelly Jacobs says
Have you seen this?
Alpha Showdown 2017 Round 13:
Mad Rogan vs. Kate Daniels
https://shar.es/1ROIYj
I voted for Kate!
Rhonda says
Me too, but I had to think about it.
Korinne says
ooooo, that’s so hard! I can’t decide! I want to say Kate because she’s been trained since childhood and she just plain doesn’t die no matter what she’s up against. But if Rogan saw her coming, he could just pull her sword right out of her hands and impale her with it. Hm….
Sarah says
She can use a power word on him and I dont think he can take her sword away from her bc its coated in her magic and, if i remember correctly, he cant use his telekinesis on things that are coated in other peoples magic so Kate would win
Korinne says
Good points!
Tink says
Ok, Kate beating Curran has got to be worth a Twitter fight between them. It’s been awhile since we’ve seen one of their Twitter discussions. How about it, Ilona?
Helen Holck says
Thanks for thinking of us. Any break from the surreal ‘reality’ show our world had become is a blessing
sarafina says
THIS IS FABULOUS!!!!! And maybe Leon gets told tomorrow?
Life is good.
Susan says
For the love of all that’s holy – Thank You!
Ms. Kim says
Leon, Leon, Leon.
Teresa die hard fan says
I love Leon and I thank Ilona and Gordon for lovely snippets.
Jennifer says
Thank you! That was fun. What is Arabella ‘s gift?
Amanda Young says
I need to do a re-read for sure because I can’t find a discussion on the family and the kids’ magic abilities on the internet and it is still somewhat vague and it seems like there are abilities they may have that are only hinted at as of yet…
Amanda Young says
Oh sorry – I misspoke. Ilona explains Leon’s more above and Arabella changes into some kind of very large “monstrous” being, as yet not disclosed 🙂
Angel says
Checking your website several times a day reminds me of when you were writing Innkeeper!
The excitement, the satisfaction and the pain…
Speaking of, my little sister just has her tonsils out and spent the day reading One Fell Sweep. She is so in love with both Sean and Arland. She said that she wishes men like that really exist, then sighed. ? She’s my baby sister and 14, she’s not supposed to sigh over men yet!! ?? I know, I know, but shes growing up so fast!
reethu says
Awesome…
I want to leon to hear about his magic from nevada only
Booklover says
Maybe Bug told him already or Rogan.
Gunn Marit says
Dear Ilona, thank you for the snippet! But how big a bribe do I need to send to get the complete book like right now instead of waiting until the release? It’s pure torture!
And you once wrote that you would not send out to many books a year so people would not get tired of you. Really, I could easily buy 4 a month! 4 a year is not much!
Really LOVE your books! Greetings from Norway.
Marija says
Thank you!
Samantha says
Love, hugs, and rum for all! The snippet is lovely thank you. The comments…muahahaha thank you horde.
Oona says
Leon, leon leon + Ferrets… I want to see that Mission Impossible, ROFL. I am not sure if Leon is going to defect to Rogan or sign up with the Ceasar… but he is waaay vulnerable to manipulation. I wouldn’t want to be in House Baylor’s shoes if someone put the whammy on him and set him on his family…. 🙁
So is he considered a Prime at his talent? That would make 4 Primes in Baylor. And if we know Bernard is a Prime (we don’t) then that would make it … 5 Primes. Full House!
7 weeks and counting…
Amanda Young says
“It’s like she was telepathic or something.” hahahahahahahahaha I can’t wait to see you guys tonight and I can’t wait for this book. Thank you 🙂
Claudia says
All Hail the AUTHORLORDS!!!
Question: What happened to Augustine’s Admin?
Alinia says
I suspect Lina just got sent on vacation so she wasn’t vulnerable to questions. EG would immediately see that this new admin is *new* and wouldn’t pursue an interrogation, same as the hex “shell” being camouflage. The shell saved Augustine, but any good truthseeker would have multiple avenues of pursuit and EG found her grandchildren anyway.
Nanik says
Thank you! I know it ends well, but until PI can read it all I’m a bit worried…
Kay says
What about Bern & Leon’s mother…..would she sell the family down the river and who was the guy with the red beard?
