Book Depository
We have some bad news. Book Depository is going out of business.
According to the Guardian and Book Riot, this closure is likely a part of Amazon’s current cutbacks. Amazon, which bought Book Depository in 2011, is seeking to eliminate 18,000 jobs over all, some of them in the Devices and Books section.
Book Depository was a favorite source of print books for many readers located outside of US. They came on the scene the same year our first book came out, and this is a really sad turn of events. The store will be sorely missed.
We are looking at alternative retailers. All of the Book Depository links on the site will have to be replaced, and we will let you know as soon as we figure out which store we will put in that space.
Website
Moving on, thanks to the might of the BDH, we’re in real danger of outgrowing Flywheel, which is the current home of our website. We get all the traffic, which is a wonderful problem to have, and our big spikes in release months are straining Flywheel resources.
We will most likely be moving to WP Engine for our hosting. This is an involved process, and there will be a lot going on behind the scenes, hopefully none of it visible. We will be making sure that free fiction section is a bit easier to find and will be streamlining some design elements during this time.
State of Magic Claims
To the utter shock of no one at all, Magic Claims is a bit longer than planned. We are at 50K right now and we still have a bit to go. Magic Tides was 43K, and it was twice as long as a typical novella. There is no way to call Magic Claims a novella. It’s a short novel, and we all will just have to live with that.
Because it is a little longer and we are a little tired, there have been less posts on the blog. We are trying hard to deliver a good finale. We will do our best to make it worth the wait.
Mod R has read the draft up to the final battle point and reports that it is not terrible. (I might have understated Mod R’s response a bit for the sake of maintaining my humble author image.)
Thank you for your support and patience!

A short novel rather than a novella? Oh well, I guess we will just have to settle in and read it. (!!yay!!)
Ariel says
I would happily wait with radio silence from you for months if I had hope of a beast of a novel to read for Magic Claims. I forced myself to slow down reading the last saga so I didn’t completely abandon my husband and children to fend for themselves and blast through every yummy chapter. My only criticism of any of your books is that they’re over too fast!
Love and respect to you and the “army of awesome” who work so hard to bring us hours of delight.
Leigh-Ayn says
Hi all.
I am sad about book depository as it was a great place to get paperbacks and not pay ridiculous amounts in shipping to get it to Australia!
I’ve been told Blackwells in the UK also offers free shipping so will be having a look at them!
xx

With the exception of Book Depository, this post made my day! All the comments have been hysterical!
Maia says
esperaré impacientemente, pero tomense el tiempo que necesiten por que hasta ahora nunca me decepcioné con nada que House Andrews escribió.
Gracias por su hermoso esfuerzo!

On Reddit on EU boards discussing this I have seen this list of alternative sites. Nor sure if any of these could work for you, but I figured it wouldn’t hurt:
Blackwells, Kennys, Wordery, http://used.addall.com, & http://vialibri.net
Excited about all the extra words!

Thanks for the suggestions! ????
jewelwing says
So we will have to power through a short novel, rather than a novella? Oh, the hardship! I’m steeling myself already.
Condolences to those who are losing the Book Depository. Losing any bookstore is hard.
I hope the transition to the new website goes as smoothly as possible.
Claudia says
Thank you for giving us good news after delivering the bad 🙂
Kate Thompson says
We all love your work so we will patiently wait for a great final product! Be kind to yourselves when things are chaotic.
Ariel says
I’ve heard that Blackwell’s is an alternative retailer!

“To the utter shock of no one at all, Magic Claims is a bit longer than planned.” Gordon and Jeanine must be both be ROFL! ????
Take all the time you need and don’t worry about not posting – Mod R takes very good care of the BDH! ????
Kate Thompson says
Having now imagined the magic clams, I’m seeing a blind sentient version as competitors in innkeepers’ hosting of a future spousal selection…sort of a Botticelli Venus rising — only since they are blind, imagine the possibilities… I should delete this but what the heck
Lesley says
We of the BDH greatly appreciate as many words as you care to share with us. The more the merrier as far as we are concerned. If it takes a little bit longer than originally planned, we will wait, impatient, yes – but wait we gladly will.
Wes d says
We love everything you write. We are patiently waiting but if you need us to beat anyone up for you we will do this also. Just saying. Happy Easter ????

Sad to hear about Book Depository. Its never a good thing to lose a source of print books. Especially used ones. We need sources of out of print and just reasonably priced books. Shipping & exchange rates have become ridiculous. I have used many re-sellers from the US Amazon Marketplace and appreciated each one. I treasure all the bookmarks, hand written thank you notes and original sales slips , black & white photo (!) and whatnot I’ve found in the used books purchased.
Can’t get that experience at a big box store. Kudos to all booksellers 🙂
John says
Book Depository joins Bookpages (who remembers them?) on the list of UK sites merged and dissolved by Amazon.
MildBill says
Wow, “not terrible”… with a recommendation like that, how can it miss? I’m sure any author, even a humble one, would be thrilled to get such a recommendation. ;P
Moderator R says
It’s a lot better than “not terrible”, Ilona is just being humble ????
Jean says
Yay for longer book!! ????????????
Yay for blog posts whenever they are posted!! ????????
Sad to hear of a book source being closed. There was a great independent book store in the downtown of the town where I grew up. Long gone with the rest of the stores, most of them local businesses run by multiple generations of the same family. The “malling” of America…. sigh.
Pam says
I am sorry to hear that Book Depository is closing. Naturally, I’m thrilled to hear that you are writing a longer book, but I hope you guys also get enough rest.
ZC says
You make the book being longer sound like a bad thing, when it’s really like being told you’re getting 4 christmas presents and then finding a hidden fifth under the tree.
MJ Jones says
A longer book is always worth the wait! Your loyal BDH appreciates you!
Maria OToole says
“A bit” longer than planned…I doubt most of us in the BDH will mind.
Variel says
Magic Clams “It’s not terrible.” You guys kill me.

Magic Claims!!!!!!! All Love and Support!!!! Singing loud in my Heart!!!
lia says
hehehe yay!!! more words!!!
in other news, I was going on a 15+ hr flight this past weekend and was super excited to binge the Graphic Audio version of Kate…and then realized it’s not out til next week ???? can’t wait! love that HA is doing their books in so many different mediums.
Lesley says
I am so upset about Book Depository. I used to love watching their interactive book buying map.
Maria says
Yeah, so unhappy about Book Depository… it was great to get history books from all over, or American Cook Books!….. even if I hated the fact that any time you bought from them recently, Amazon were getting a cut… such a pity for all the people attached to the job losses.
But so looking forward to Magic Claims ! I won’t mind how long it will be ! 🙂
Bill G says
The closure of a book store/source is always bad news. Pfui on Amazon. And ‘Magic Claims’ is to be a short novel? Gee, how terrible!
Debra K Hoffmaster says
Not terrible huh? Mod R you are the master of understatement! I can’t wait
Tina Henry says
Short, medium or long, any of your work is read and treasured. When a new book is released, however long it is, I will buy it. When it is a shorter work, I really REALLY try not to read it so fast because I just don’t want it to be finished and then have to wait for the next book. It does not work so I am left with waiting. Alas, there is no cure for Book junkies.
Sharon says
YAY! An actual book!
Thank you!
I can’t wait!
ChrisV says
Comments can be just as much fun as books or blogs. We could all be in 7th grade and ask if ModR was doing cartwheels on the beach what color would her underwear be? Yuk Yuk
And I remember FrInnKeeper being mentioned as a distantly scheduled sometime something, so my Friday diligence will be rewarded someday somewhere, so there are more. Yay!
Relin says
Your work is always worth the wait! And I hadn’t realized BDH had gotten to the point of stressing the web architecture. O.o
And I’m sad to hear the fate of Book Depository. It’s so frustrating when companies like Amazon destroy others doing good work.
Cally says
The volume of shellfish related foolishness going on in this comment section is an absolute delight. You all are hilarious.

“To the utter shock of no one at all…”
Must be the day, but this made me laugh and laugh and laugh – intentioned or not, thank you!
Sjik says
Yay! Please work as happily as you can to deliver to us our Magic Clams 😛
Lenore Villa says
Thank you!
We cherish every moment you can spare to keep us informed.
Will miss Book Depository when it’s gone. My conduit to a more varied supply of books I want my niece and nephews in France and Switzerland to read.
Sorry for the rest of the world who won’t have such future access to titles and authors as we take for granted here in the USA.
Mickie T says
I took a look at Blackwell’s site, since someone in the comments at Smart Bitches mentioned that their international shipping is free. And while you don’t get a separate shipping charge from them, what they say is “Delivery cost included within the price of the book.” That’s not exactly the same as free shipping.
ReadKnitSnark says
Yeah, but that’s the same thing BookDepo did (and still does, for a while yet). The point is that the price of the book is the price of the book; containing shipping, VAT, and whatnot. I appreciate knowing the price I’m considering is the final price. It’s a very civilized way to buy things.
Contrast that to a purchase I just made from Amazon.com. (And believe me, I looked everywhere else online first—locally in-country, the Nordic countries, the EU, anywhere…zip, zilch, nada. So I had to buy from Amazon because I was buying a case for an older—by a few generations—used phone. (Because I’d just smashed the screen on my previous phone…hence, the protective case.)) My choices were two: boring and ugly-to-me. Price was shown to me as I considered my options with a +shipping pretty prominently featured. But when I made my choice, not only was I charged item price and shipping, but they slapped VAT on the combination of that price…which felt like an insult. Uncivilized.
RIP BookDepo—you brought me much joy through the mail. :´(

So happy that Magic Claims is gonna be a “short novel”. I’m excited and I reckon many fans are. Sorry though that there’s pressure and stress involved. Stay strong! I’m glad you both have each other. I think that’s your superpower.
Margaret K says
This site and all of HA’s book are a source of ever-giving joy in my life. I can hardly remember a post of a book that didn’t have me smiling or laughing. This was no exception. Thanks HA and Mod R for some early afternoon giggles on my lunch break.

“To the utter shock of no one at all, Magic Claims is a bit longer than planned.” You left out “but also to the absolute glee of BDH” ????
kommiesmom says
Yay!
More words! Thank you!
No problem if the price has to go up. I will happily pay the going rate for the longer publication.
So sorry about Book Depository. It not something I knew much about, but it seems like it was a good idea. Any bookstore going under is a shame.
Heather says
O no! More words to read…how ever will we cope?? Yay! Thanks so much 🙂
Maura says
Sad news about Book Depository, though honestly a bit surprised it took Amazon so long to do it.
Really looking forward to Magic Claims, novella, short novel, or king size, will be waiting patiently!
Michele G says
“To the utter shock of no one at all” .Yeah more Kate, more Curran, more shifters, more mayhem!
Take your time, we will wait. If not always patiently, it will be eagerly.

I can imagine Mod R’s uncensored response. Not terrible would definitely not cover it lolz

Just glad you’re all chugging along. Was worried when I didn’t see any blog posts lately! ❤️
I wanted to drop in a comment about graphic audio since I just listened to my first one. I got Sweep of the Blade which is my favorite Innkeeper and was totally blown away by the production quality! What a fun way to reexperience the story!
I immediately preordered Magic Bites and I’m so excited for its release! Highly recommend!
Deborah says
You are always worth the wait!
Rebecca says
A LONGER book, we don’t want that— said no member of the BDH ever. 🙂
Make it as long and you care to make it, no worries here!
