Happy Book Birthday to A Curse of Beasts and Magic

Blog, Friends, News, Writing 64 Comments | POST A COMMENT May 26, 2026 by Ilona

By now everyone probably knows that Jeaniene Frost is my BFF, so I am very biased, but I loved this book.

A CURSE OF BEASTS AND MAGIC

Jeaniene Frost returns with a brand-new series! It’s Beauty and the Beast meets The Witcher, except Beauty IS the Beast, and he’s the Warden keeping mythical beings in check in our world and beyond.

Raine Stone is living a nightmare. Ever since she survived the attack that killed her family, she’s been hiding a terrible secret–and a Beast inside her.

It feeds on violence and chaos, but she restrains its urges by playing vigilante on the city streets. Until one night, Raine uses the Beast’s energy to heal an elderly gentleman from a seemingly random attack and discovers a new world of danger—literally.

Remington “Remy” Byrne knows the wall between a realm of deadly mythic creatures and our own world is very fragile. After all, he’s the Warden who guards the gateways between them. Raine’s Beast contains power that could tip the scales in a sinister plot against Remy’s rule—if she allies with him.

Will they be friends or foes…or will their dangerous attraction turn into something else? And can our world be saved by their explosive alliance?

At the Publisher’s request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

“Jeaniene Frost is Romantasy royalty!” J. R. Ward, #1 NY Times bestselling author

“A thrilling, sexy world.” Geneva Lee, NY Times bestselling author

“Unputdownable…A truly spectacular read!” Laura Thalassa, USA Today Bestselling author

This book is a modern fairytale.

The setting is lush and filled with magics, both large and small, from something like a model of a city where rivers flow upward to seeing that city in real life.

The hero is mysterious and inscrutable and is very clearly morally grey, although I’m not sure morally grey standard would even apply. Remington exists on the crossroads of magical realms. His interactions with regular people are limited. His primary concern is keeping everybody else from killing each other. Somewhere between the dragons and the fae, he forgot how to human a little bit.

But what I really liked the best is Raine. All of us harbor a part of ourselves that we don’t particularly like. Occasionally it rears us and jams a random thought into you head that makes you pause and think, “This was mean and petty. This is not me.” No matter how hard we work on it, we can never get rid of it. We can only suppress it.

Raine carries literal monster inside of herself and so much of her has been devoted to containing it. This is a woman who turned her body into a prison and thought for years that this is a burden she had to shoulder alone. Then along comes Remington and opens the world of possibilities she couldn’t have even imagined. She is so out of her depth, but she is a survivor, and she’s learning to swim in those dangerous magic currents. I have a feeling (more than a feeling, as I have read the second one) that Raine will soon come into her own.

So, pick it up for the scorching romance and magic realms, and stay for a woman who will not be anyone’s pushover.

As with all Jeaniene Frost’s books, romance is strong with this one. The spice is there and it is open door. She is also going on tour. If you are so inclined, you can see us together in Columbus this summer.

I love the concept of this book but I am not so interested in the spice. Suppose it is just as good for a reader who skips the naked times? Lol

Just finished the book. There were only two spicy times and would be easy to skip without losing anything in the story. All of the pull and relationship happens outside of those two times. Much less spicy than her Hunter books.

The book was great, btw. Except for that cliff we ended on. ; )

Are cliffs the new thing? This Kingdom (which I’m rereading for the fifth time) also ends in a cliffhanger…

I also like to skip the spicy scenes, but some books are now so heavy on the romance, that there nearly isn’t a plot to read…

I can’t speak about this book, but from her previous ones, I think you’d be ok. They are full of characters and plot and I think you’d still enjoy it, even if you skipped some pages.

My grandma told me that on some books she skipped a page and some most of a chapter (she didn’t like smut), but she could still enjoy the books. Jeaniene’s books (at least to me, the ones that I’ve read), are more than just the bedroom scenes. It’s not like you read them solely for smut, if that makes sense. 🤷‍♀️

I read a lot of books with smut that are still good books. I skip a good bit not because it is smut but it is very repetitive smut. They are kind of been there done that already

Does anyone have any recommendation about what is a good entry point forJeaniene Frost? She seems really funny when she’s featured on the blog so I’d like to try reading her but she has a lot of books! Would fans recommend this for a first one or try something else first? I favour humour over angst if that helps.

Hi Morag, I started with Halfway to the Grave. That’s the beginning of the main series and from what I can tell her other books (other than A Curse of Beasts and Magic) are spin offs of this series. I haven’t read everything by Jeanine Frost yet including her newest book which I now have on hold on Overdrive.

Thanks to Mod R for providing the Reading List link, but A CURSE OF BEASTS AND MAGIC is a good starting point because it’s a brand-new world and the first in a new series, so you have nothing to catch up on. It’s also in Kindle Unlimited if you have that, so you can try it for free. I’m biased, but I think all my books have more humor than angst, although the humor might skew a little dark. I have a bit of a twisted sense of humor myself :).

It sounds interesting, you sold it to me!

However, when I googled it and went to a german store, the ebook costs 20 €, which is about 22,40 $. That’s too much for me. I might still get to read it at some point, or just go for the paperback, which for some reason is cheaper (18 €).

I’m not really complaining, and I know its not a book of HA, but I really wonder what happened here?

The ebook is only 15 $ on Amazon.com, more than 5 $ less than on german Amazon (still the english version). I also don’t understand why the ebook would be more expensive than the paperback. Would be interesting who’s chosen the prices here and what the reasoning for that was.

Retailer in general and Amazon in particular set their own prices 🙂

Just a reminder that the ebook is available on Kindle Unlimited.

It is worth checking as well that you are not looking at a private seller entry, those are usually very hiked – the book is around £16/17 for me in the UK, which would be closer to 18 Euros.

As far as I know, publisher/authors can set the price for ebooks.

Sadly it is not on Kindle Unlimited in Germany.

It is the first English edition book I have seen, where it is priced significant higher. 12,87€ -> 19,30€

Ilona Andrews and many other books are always fairly priced, oftentimes better because of favorable exchange rates, even with VAT included.

I also wondered what happened and wrote Jeaniene Frost. But I think an answer will take some time, because of the ongoing release.
