Welcome to the Breach Wars!

The Inheritance actually slipped into Amazon circulation late last night, so we had to scramble a little bit to match it on our store. I have a few store queries to take care of and I will jump on it right after this post.

Obligatory cover and synopsis.

We are at war. The interdimensional invasion brought us unimaginable suffering, but it also awoke talents slumbering deep within us, a means to repel and destroy our enemy. Every day new gates open, leading to breaches filled with monsters and valuable resources. If you are a Talent, your country needs you. The world needs you. Be the hero you were born to be.

Adaline is a Talent. Ten years ago, she had a happy marriage and a job she loved. The invasion shattered both. Now she works for the government, searching the breaches for magic metals and medicine to help Earth repel an interdimensional enemy. A quick note regarding EU access to the store. The company that onboarded our EU tax compliance assumed that all books are tax free in US, which caused an issue when I tested the store and it dramatically failed to collect Texas tax. We had to temporarily remove EU access, but they assure us that everything is fixed. Once I get through the customer issues, I will try reopening and we will see if it works.

  2. It was a great read! I was able to get mine at 9:33 pm PT! I tried to read chapter 1, but I could not contain my pa*tience and had to read the end first so I could savor all the goodness. Thanks for a great story!

    • I got mine this morning, and started to read at the beginning but almost immediately jumped to the end. So satisfying!!! I knew there would be more added into the rest of the story, but I just had to see the reunion with London (Pow! Bam! Crash! heehee) and with Ada’s children. Now to go back to the beginning and savor the details.

      • Right here with you. I will not lie. I may have frozen time to reread that reunion in the way Ada could not. Having Elias and Jackson comment on it later was just the cherry on top. Delicious.

        Can not wait for part 2, whenever it comes.

    I hope that you take the day to bask in the feeling of success and satisfaction of another job well done. The two of you are amazing authors, it is no wonder that you usually can’t keep to a shorter story, you put so much into the world and character development and into having the story be correct within that framework. It all shows in your final published work, and it is why I am so spoiled now that reading other authors is more taxing than it used to be. I compare their story to the smoothness of one of yours, and it doesn’t match up.

  14. Couldn’t sleep last night. Just ´happened’ to check Amazon – because you never know – and quietly screamed waking husband and dog. Neither will forgive me. 😏 The beautiful cover! I grabbed it and thought I’d just glance at it. Two hours later, my husband suggested I go to sleep so he and the doggie could sleep. Apparently I was giggling and gasping. 😉 What a ride!   16. I did not read the ending, I am p*tiently rereading. There are definitely some adds, I can’t remember if Elias greeting the kids and telling them about their mom was part of the serial but that was such a great scene. I’m 75% though, Ada is heading into the trap and I have work meetings for the next few hours. ..tragic

        the kids being prepared was heartbreaking, IA really know how to pull the heartstrings!

        I was able to squeak in the ending between meetings. holy that ending!!

    • I did the full reread. Of course I did the full reread every single time a new episode came out, so perhaps that’s not surprising. Savor the flavor.

    I had zero problems buying from your store or downloading it. And sending it to my kindle app is easier than to my nook app, so that’s where it now resides. Sorry for the snafus you’ve encountered, but happy book bday despite!!

    And I absolutely love it!! Ada was amazing at the end and so was Elias. I was going to expound on that, but no spoilers today! Sigh, it was really really satisfying.

  27. I read the notes at the beginning, which I loved, and then went straight to the back like so many others here. Loved it, the meeting seemed perfect and about how I expected. But now Cold Chaos knows just so much, that I can’t wait for the sequel, and it will probably be years. We literally just got this one, why is it so hard to wait?

  28. Having trouble finding it at Barnes and Noble? I first searched for “Inheritance” Nope, nothing there. Looked under Ilona Andrews, nope nothing there. So I went to Amazon, found it as “The Inheritance (Breach Wars Book 1). Went back to b & n tried “The Inheritance” nope, still not there. Tried “The Inheritance the Breach Wars” Unusually for a specific search query it wasn’t the first hit but was finally there about 4 rows down. Personally I prefer my nook over the Kindle. It was my first e reader and has the largest e library. My Kindle only has books that nook doesn’t offer. (very few, but there are some) So, be of good cheer fellow nook owners, the new book IS there, hope this will help you.

  29. It took about thirty seconds to place order and receive book in Book Funnel this morning. Unfortunately I have to visit a client and won’t get to read it until noon. Damn work and I am self employed. Can’t cheat today. The anticipation is killing me.

  30. Quick question- When I downloaded one of the free books from the site as a test case it was delivered without a cover. Can anyone who has downloaded this directly from the IA site tell me if we get the cover on our Kindle for the Inheritance? Or a way to make sure we get a cover for it?

      Once you open the book in the Kindle Library, it will pop up,

      • I have it on my kindle right now, with cover 🙂 Open the book through the Kindle Library screen and it will appear.

        • Do you have a fire or a paperwhite? I’ve opened them several times on my paperwhite and the cover still isn’t showing. According to BookFunnel, “Amazon will not display a thumbnail book cover in the library view unless the book was purchased in the Kindle store. This change began in 2021 and nearly every Kindle ereader received this update.” Amazon’s way of encouraging us to buy books through them, I guess.

          • After I open the book downloaded to my device and read it, I go back in the Kindle library and it shows up 🙂

            I have many books through Netgalley with covers, as well as direct purchases that I transferred to my Kindle Paperwhite that display the cover without Amazon being involved. Maybe you have a setting that prevents it? 🙂

            • It’s possible – in that old commercial I would have said I’m a Mac 😅. It’s embarrassing how much trouble I have doing admin tasks on my kids’ fires. Or it could be that my kindle is 13 years old and not updating completely. When I saw that information on bookfunnel’s website, I assumed it applied to everyone – I’m glad that is not the case!

              • My cover did show up after opening as instructed and I have a Kindle Paper white. I hope you get it figured out so you can get the pretty covers too! If not, there are always good black Friday sales for new kindles…..

              • So, thatdoes happen. My old Kindle (2012) just stopped being able to even contact the Amazon website about 2 years ago and it was too outdated to update so I had to buy a new one. One day a message showed up on the screen when I tried to browse the store saying the operating system was too old to be able to link to Amazon. Can still read whats already there but thats it. That was a traumatizing day.

    I’ll take my time savoring the reread tonight with a cup of hot tea and chocolate chip cookies and find all the other wonderful tidbits.

  37. I started reading from the beginning, got through what London and Melissa did, and couldn’t wait any longer to see what Ada did to them, so I jumped to the end. Now I’m rereading from the beginning. Looking forward to the extra scenes.

  38. I was wondering where the serial stopped and the new stuff began, but I’ll read from the first page on so I’m not confused. I am kinda old, and as much as I hate monopolies myself, I bought it on Kindle because I know how to work that. I love the store, and look forward to buying books there in the future.

  41. This may be asking a lot, but aside from the ending, is there a cheat sheet for what is OG to the serial and what’s new material for The Inheritance? I’ve been keeping up with the blog (thank you!) and so I’m not ready for a full re-read, but if there are nuggets that have been inserted, I’d love to go back and read those parts to make sure I’m all up to date. Thank you!

    • No, there have been explanations, tweaks, smoothings, scenes inserted all throughout. It’s about 20% more content along with content modifications 🙂

I have purchased the ebook, and will pick up the audio when my Audible credit drops. (Yes, I like them that much! Ada and Bear — best team ever!)   48. Love love love the new scene (in Chapter 6) when Elias and Leo go to Ada’s house to pick up the kids. Hints of what would make Ada and Elias a good couple. And more importantly, a super intriguing reveal of Tia’s Talent.

  49. Bought through Amazon UK and read while I nursed a chest infection (best distraction ever). Already reviewed (review in the queue) but why are there no reviews up yet? Surely someone out there has already reviewed it – anynow, mines out there waiting to go up – 5 stars natch!

  50. Question for anyone else that has lived in or is local to the Chicago area: do you care that it’s called Elmwood and not Elmwood Park? What do/did you call it when you lived there? It’s been years but I feel like we always said the full name. Am I alone? Is the transitory nature of my time there showing? Am I being picky and should just get over myself and enjoy the story?

    • The Inheritance is a work of fiction 🙂 , not an Ordnance Survey map or a piece of technical writing.

      In a dimension where gates open and let monsters through, place names will sometimes be shortened, altered, or called different things by different characters. It’s not our world, but it is how real people speak.

      If you lived in “Elmwood Park,” you might say the full name; someone else might just refer to it as “Elmwood”, as a shortening of “The Elmwood Park gate”. In a world full of interdimensional breaches, I suspect locals would be even quicker to shorten words to get to the important part, such as “Run!” 😀

      So I’d say: try to roll with it, let the characters speak as the authors guide them to, and most importantly yes, do try to enjoy the story! 🙂

  51. Here is what I did. I bought the book. Immediately scrolled down to the end. Read the new parts that were not posted in the blog. Deeply enjoyed a certain punch in the face. Then scrolled back to the beginning and started my reread.

  55. Had to work today so through an awesome show of my strength of will (I know every cardcarrying member of the BDH will understand the superhuman effort) I waited till 17h French time to buy it. I’m happy to say that the direct buy worked well, though I cannot vouch that I paid the taxes.

  56. Thought I’d check late last night and, YES, it was available! I forced myself to wait until this morning to read it but had to read the end first. Couldn’t help myself. Her daughter has skills too!? Was that a teaser for the sequel? Imagine London will be coming back in the next book as a bigger baddie. Also imagining, wishing, Ada and Bear, and maybe Elias, fight in the Innkeeper big battle to come. IA, I absolutely love your books!!! Im going to be Chalant waiting for the sequels plus Maggie’s book.

    • I think London is completely defeated. I doubt he will want to challenge Ada, after she survived a week alone in that breach. The breach where London was so scared that he committed murder instead of waiting 10 seconds for 5 more people to escape. After Ada’s punch, all his careful lies have fallen apart. His only hope at revenge would be political or petty, and I think London’s “risk averse” nature and pattern of moving on after a disaster will win out over a very risky attempt at revenge.

      • He’s definitely a coward; however, he’s scummy enough to want some kind of revenge. We shall see…. House Andrews never fails to surprise.

    Was debating whether to indulge and skip to the end or read again from the beginning. Chose the latter, and I am happy about that because I got to savor the reworks and added bits before the denouement dessert! Happy to report the punch is every bit as satisfying as it should have been. Hee-hee!

    Looking forward to exploring how Elias and Ada (and Tia???) can help each other repel the invasion in the sequel, and hopefully we can see a little bit into how a non-Merchant lees clan works. And visit Baha-char from a new perspective. Wheeeee!

    (I am chalant, I am chalant, I am chalant. I will NOT bug HA for word on possible sequel timing. Nope. Not gonna do it.)

I was almost done with another book, so I finished it first – I did get three chapters into The Inheritance before I couldn’t hold my eyes open any longer. Well worth it.

  76. is there a way to ask libraries to purchase ebook/libby copies? I know libraries see our “notify me” tags, but I can’t even find this book on Libby so there’s no way to tag it.

    • Libby’s “Notify Me” is the only way at my library – one of the biggest library systems in the country – to suggest ebooks for purchase: the main library web site has a page for suggesting purchases but if you select ebook as the format it tells yo to use Libby. You’ll need to be patient I think, it can take some time before self-published books show up in Libby.

  78. The Inheritance was on my Kobo at 1:49am when I randomly woke up (thank you menopause).

    I then fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous is never get involved in a land war in Asia, but only slightly less well known is this; never start reading an Ilona Andrews book at 2am if you have to function later that day! Ilona Andrews books are un-put-downable!

    But really, who needs sleep on a book birthday?

  98. Very satisfying ending. I have great faith in the Authors, but there are so many issues left unresolved, I don’t see how one sequel could provide closure. So many books that I eagerly await: Kate Daniels Wilmington years, Hugh, Julie, Innkeeper, and Arabella. The cross over in the Inn Keeper world is delicious. The Maggie story is not coming out for months-sigh. Ilona Andrews are the only one click authors left in my life. So many book series that started off great have dissolved into mediocracy, but the author lords ‘ books just keep getting better.

    I found The Inheritance on Barnes and Noble in the audio book section online. I typed in “Ilona Andrews” in Books. Then I went on the hunt. For some strange reason, Barnes and Noble buried the ebook within the audio books.

    My advice for all the Barnes and Noble BDH readers is to use the link at the top for ease of getting the book. Unless you want to hunt for it the other way. 😂🤪😉

  114. I have now devoured the newest offering and am both delighted! It was so good! And devastated! I must now chalantly W@!T, that most awful of four letter words, for the now much desired sequel! Woe! I’m unconvinced on only a sequel though. The Inheritance feels sneaky and like it really wants to stuff more story under the hood. I mean, can ONE more novel really capture all of a whole hinted arc? And what about Leo!? And Jackson!? They feel suspiciously storyful.
    BUT! I make no demands, we need nice rested author lords to produce the precious. I merely sit, occasionally with soulful eyes not unlike Bear eyeing a much wanted but denied stalker steak, waiting for the next awesome book. Of any variety. They’re all good. 🙂

    I checked and discovered The Inheritance on Kobo last night before I went to bed. After immediately purchasing it, I decided I wanted the whole experience, so I, through an extreme act of willpower, did not skip to the end, but started over from the beginning. I made it to chapter 3 before the words started blurring and my eyes wouldn’t stay open anymore.

    I read the rest of the book after work today, and I was not disappointed. Getting the whole of the story as one, finding the new nuggets of content along way, was delightful! I especially like how several edits addressed questions and comments that were raised while the serial was being weekly published. We the horde helped, at least a little, in our feedback, to improve the story. That is really cool.

    A lot of comments above mentioned “the punch”. The punch was epic! But here’s why: Ada punched through London’s shield, and broke it. While London and Elias’s skill level differs, we know that Elias’s shield would break a pure black adamant sword, which is probably magical because it glows purple. That adamant sword didn’t even cause the Blade Warden’s shield to waiver. If Blade Warden’s shields can stand up to pure adamant, but not to Ada, what does this mean?

    Ada’s fists are more powerful than adamant!

    Thank you, Ilona and Gordon, for publishing this amazing story during a dark time. As you intended, I was able to look forward to each new installment, and it was a bright spot every week. Even if an extra week went by between installments, knowing there was more to come was a true element of hope for me.

    Regarding the ending, I suspect Elias is going to discover for himself the answers to two big philosophical questions:

    1. Where does the 600 lbs kitty cat sleep? and
    2. When does the 600 lb kitty cat get fed, petted, brushed and given treats?

    The answers, of course, are: “wherever she wants” and “whenever she wants”.

    What I am really wondering though is what happens when Samantha decides to give the “nice kitty” some catnip?

    • All the original illustrations commissioned for the Inheritance have been included, with at least 3 that weren’t posted in the online serial 🙂

      The other pictures used for serial chapters on the blog are stock images, and the licence purchased to use them does not extend to publishing in a book.

I was almost at the end when Ada was coming out and Cold Chaos was going in when I had to get off the plane. 😂 I had to wait until I got through the airport and onto the light rail before I could finish. Aggravating, but worth it!

    3. I had a good laugh at Ada’s ex being named Roger Moore. 🕵️‍♂️

    4. London and Melissa and the second assault team know the truth—that Ada walked out of the breach on her own. Can’t imagine London and Melissa keeping that a secret, especially if London wants to create trouble for Cold Chaos . . . ? 👿

    5. Did I understand correctly that the large cat that kept scavengers away from the assault team’s remains was the same skelzhar in the anchor chamber? 🐆

    6. Wonder what other recordings have been stored in the sphere that Elias and team found in the second, younger, skelzhar. Could Ada’s entire journey in the breach have been documented? 🎥

  175. Finished it! I know I am late, but unreasonably extensive work demands kept me from finishing yesterday.

    WOW! So good! Loved the chapter with the kids meeting Elias; I did not realize this was missing in the serial until I read it now. Also, I might have skimmed a bit on the known chapters, but I believe you toned down the whole „Malcolm is dead“ thing.

    London (barely) survived; he may be back to haunt Ada when he realizes that she came back changed. No doubt he will try to monetize this information now that he is jobless.

    Elias leveled up at the end AND got a kitty! This has so much potential for future interactions… I was aware during the serial that there was one alien kitty unaccounted for, but I did not expect that outcome.

    Ada managed to keep her cover for now, but this cannot work for long. She cannot go back into the breach as a DeBrA, especially with another guild;,her cover will be blown at the first monster attack.

    So, the fleet is off to a slow start, but I have no doubt it will stay true to the charted course! Maybe Tia will be the ships‘ navigator…

    So many exciting hooks and loose ends to explore in the new series…

  185. Well, Ada’s list of allies is short if it follows logic. Cold Chaos with Elias in charge it is – for now at least. Possible it can expand to other guilds, Elias seems to be a treasure trove of contacts.
    If it’s inadvisable to meet directly they can exchange messages in breaches via the escort teams.

    Can Ada maybe switch to damage dealing? Her speed and weapon of choice screams pulse carver, maybe interceptor.
    Will Bear be her companion in breaches forthwith? She should be able to swing it – like I’ll be more comfortable with my own GSD to warn me and keep the monsters at bay till the escort deals with them. Totally nothing to do with the food bill for my totally normal GSD, who is just a liiittle big. Like feeding the family dog raw meat is just gross you know. And no way does this sweet lovable family dog hunt monsters, no sir! Those big teeth? Look! She is smiling.
