Is the new thing a holiday serial?
Yes.
How long?
Not very long. Probably short story range.
Every Friday?
Every Friday.
Can we get it in audio/when will it be published/why is it not Innkeeper…
Here is tea and cookies. Please have some. I can’t have cookies because I have to watch my blood sugar so you can have mine.
But!
It has been a packed year for us on the professional front. We wrote many things. Some of them familiar, like Wilmington adventures. Some of them odd and off-brand, like Maggie. Dear BDH, we couldn’t have done it without your support. Your enthusiasm, your comments, and your humanity allowed us the luxury to work at our own pace on the projects of our choosing without the oversight of a publisher or fear that we won’t succeed.
Thank you so much for making our year wonderful. You are the best!
Sarah T. says
Have a Merry Holiday and Happy New Year, HA! Thank you for continuing to share your gift with us.

Thank you for stories! I can’t give you actual cookies, but here’s my favorite cupcake recipe.
Chocolate Keto Cupcakes
2.5 cups (300g) blanched superfine almond flour
7 tbsp (52g) cocoa powder
2 tsp baking powder
90g butter or Miyoko’s buttery spread (softened)
2/3 cup xylitol (140g)
4 large Eggs
1/2+ cup unsweetened almond milk
2 tsp vanilla extract
Mini or regular keto chocolate chips–Lilly’s is a great brand. Follow your heart for amounts. Technically optional.
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (176 degrees C). Line 16 cups in a muffin tin with paper liners. Beat butter and sweetener together until fluffy. Mix dry ingredients and then beat into butter mixture. Beat in eggs, almond milk, and vanilla extract. Add chocolate chips if you’re not a monster. Bake for 20-25 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center of a cupcake comes out clean. Allow muffins to cool completely, then frost with keto frosting.

Thank you for all of your gifts and writing! Your work is important, and we really appreciate it.
I was dealing with bereavement these past couple weeks, and there were times I took refuge in your writing. For comfort. For a respite.
Just to settle myself, before diving back into the fray.
I had a longer note to send, but I did not want to post in public, and was note sure where to email.
Key point: Thank you for all you do. Your work is meaningful. It is art, and it is comfort. We cherish it.
Beth says
Xylitol isn’t safe for dogs! Erythritol is fine though. Yes, I know chocolate is bad for them as well but xylitol is much worse. Besides dogs can be tricky, so best not to have it around.

Merriest of Christmas greeting to you and your family, from over the Pond in the UK. Devoted reader of everything.
Diagnosed with type 2 diabetes last year. Found this a useful sugar substitute for cooking and baking- looks like sugar:
NKD Living Stevia & Erythritol (1:1) it has no calories. Im not linked to the company in any way. Made a lovely steamed sponge with blueberries using it.
Found various supplements that helped control/lower the sugar, and blood pressure, so for a while went back to being pre-diabetic. Did research via AI asking for ones where there were research papers or trials looking at results, and which wouldnt clash with prescribed medication from my GP.
Slipped back, because a) I LOVE rice (Caribbean background)
b) cant get it together to exercise regularly!

Thank you for the tip! 🙂

That’s the plan. Instead of the golden carrot that we strive to in the future, I will be working to reach the golden cookie. 🙂 Actually, cookies are not my favorite, believe it or not. But I do love watching movies with popcorn, so that will be my snack when I get to the right numbers.

Thank you both for your wonderful books! I am so glad I somehow stumbled onto the Innkeeper serial of Clean Sweep which led me to all the rest of your work. Thank you, House Andrews, for making the world a better place.
I have some chronic health issues that I am dealing with, and I’m supposed to keep my feet elevated as much as I can. I have spend thousands of hours (quite literally) with your books playing in audio format as I do other things (work, craft, drive, build in Sims 3) and they keep me company when I am taking some feet-up time. I’m doing a complete Kate reread as we speak and I love those books at least as much now as when I first read them.
God bless and here’s hoping you and yours have a very Merry Christmas!
DameB says
Roman, Innkeeper, Maggie… even nothing at all. I will gladly accept whatever publish and but I’d rather you keep yourself safe and happy and healthy than have more books. Wishing you light in the dark, warmth in the cold, and love throughout the year.

Nickole195 says
thank you for this lovely gift.
as some ppl have already mentioned – to help my blood sugars I use monkfruit sugar (there is no after taste experienced with stevia – my opinion). very dangerous for pets is the only word of warning…be cautious of food dropped. am in love w anything from G Hughes – sugar free bbq sauces and dips – again monk sugar be careful with the fur babies. when baking it is one for one.
happy holidays to you and yours and to all the BDH. be safe and enjoy the time with family and found family.

I completely feel you – I just got diagnosed with diabetes (recently turned 47), too. I have had a rampant love affair with sugar my entire life. This diagnosis was very depressing news. Sticking my finger multiple times a day (especially when the initial poke doesn’t provide enough blood! Tip – the sides of your fingers bleed more/better. Who’d have thunk that??) is dreadful, I swear I have PTSD and have to force myself not to flinch and be a big girl to use the Fingertip Torture Devise. 😛
I tried both Truvia and Monks Fruit. My personal preference is Monks Fruit (MF, bwahahaha) – it doesn’t have any odd aftertaste.
I’ve substituted MF for sugar with varying success in some of my favorite recipes. Example – used it in a cranberry sauce for Thanksgiving. It was initially fine but after storing it in the fridge, it turned crystalline/crunchy. Odd, but still tasted good (sweeeet!).
I’m on metformin and losartan, too.
I use a smart scale that has bluetooth so I can reliably track my weight/other stats. The nice thing about the app that goes with it is that it has a food tracker, amongst other features. So I am able to see what is causing the spikes in my sugar.
I also do my very best to walk first thing in the morning for at least a half hour, if not longer. I have a desk job, so walking, even at a moderate pace, is really important to me/my health.
The good news is that I’ve lost 13 pounds in 3 months from cutting my sugar intake and calorie counting.
The better news is that while I have to really watch how much I eat, I can still have sugar – everything in moderation, right?
The best news is that due to all of these changes, I only have to use the Finger Torture Device once in the morning – my doc told me that the fasting blood sugar level was the most important one.
I am looking forward to getting my blood work done at the end of this month and seeing my AC1 go down drastically. It was almost 10 back in September. Yikes! My doc is completely ok with lessening the amount of medicine I’m on, until I can hopefully get my AC1 under control and am no longer diabetic.
I wish you the best of luck in getting your blood sugar under control and hope that knowing others are in the same situation helps you a bit.
Thank you for all the posts you all make on the Blog – it adds so much joy to so many!
Wishing you and yours (and all the rest of the BDH!) a warm and joyful holiday season! 🙂
Lee says
Talk to your doctor about a continuous glucose monitor such as Dexcom or Free Style Libre. No finger sticks. You will have better blood sugar info throughout the day allowing you to really get a grasp on how you are doing and what affects it. The devices will track your sugar levels over time and you can relate the average to your A1c. As the average goes down so does the A1c.
Best of luck and stay positive. I know it is hard.
Diane says
Was just going to suggest this. It has helped my daughter tremendously.
GreedyGuts says
Just a discovery I made after a year of finger stabbing:
The #1 setting (shallowest) actually produces more blood, more reliably, for me than the #3 setting the medical instructors started me on. Also, was far less painful.
Perhaps try it?
Saved me immeasurable amounts of pain and hassle. Now been stabbing @ the #1 setting for years.

Thank You!!!

Thank you for all, your books are my first choice for a comforting and de-stress reading.
Courage with the diet, it’s worth it, because a day without hypoglycemia is a well-feeling, energy full day.
I’m now addicted to 98% chocolate – and making my own whole wheat bread.
Happy Christmas and good holidays.
Chris Wren says
Here is a recipe that I use to get some sweetness but have plenty of protein to offset the carbs…it’s called Breadless French Toast.
Three eggs
1/2 cup milk
1 tablespoon flour
1 tablespoon sugar
Small non-stick skillet with a lid
Oil or butter
Beat the eggs and flour together. Add everything else and combine. Oil the skillet including the sides, pour in the mixture, cook covered on medium heat for 10 minutes. You should be able to invert it onto a plate with no problem.
Sharon says
A very Merry Christmas to the author lords of House Andrews. Thank you for the WORDS so many WORDS and I don’t have enough words of my own to convey how blessed I have felt by your amazing talent. Merry Christmas to my fellow Book Devouring Horde – thank you for the hysterical and uplifting comments throughout the year!! Hope everyone has a Happy and Peace Filled New Year.
Erika says
LOVE YOU TOO!
On a less happy note, I’ve seen lots of comments about managing diabetes and I just want to say to everybody that its really hard but keep going because the consequences are catastrophic! I am a hospital based physical therapist specializing in geriatrics and diabetes affects every body system. Once damage is done it can be irreversible and cumulative so keep exercising at least a little, eating healthy, please take your meds as prescribed and keep up with doctor visits! I won’t go into details about what can happen because lovely holiday season but it’s really bad, one of the worst diseases out there but really subtle in the beginning so many people don’t take it seriously.
I’m so happy you are being proactive Ilona (and BDH) because I want you to stay happy and healthy for a long time. And, thank you for sharing your story because maybe someone else can be saved in the future. Sorry for getting on my soapbox, I couldn’t help myself because preachy healthcare professional here but Love you all.

Love your worlds so much!
Your writing has kept me company thru so many situations where I needed just a bit of humor or light or to vicariously cause serious damage to someone/thing….
Very proud to fly my BDH flag – while drinking black coffee from my 20 oz “Here kitty” mug. There might be a cookie involved, too.
Good luck with the blood sugar thing. It can be a tricksy thing and I wish you the best and a normal A1C.
Lee says
Savory snack: take a firmly packed teaspoon of Parmesan cheese. Place it on a paper plate or parchment. Repeat until the plate is full. Microwave the cheese dots for a few seconds. Store in an air tight container. Salty, flavorable and NO carbs. The cheese can be used as is or flavored with your favorite spice (cayenne, curry, chili, etc.)
Thank you for the Roman story. What a wonderful Christmas gift. May your holiday season be all you could wish.
Jazzlet says
And you can do the same with other hard, low water content cheeses too for even more variety!

Norbert says
Merry Christmas to House Andrews and many thanks for your stories!
They are something to look forward to in a dark and depressing world.
Di says
Thank you for the delightful story!
Being diabetic does not mean NO sugar, it means moderation in all things. You just have to pick what you want in moderate quantities, and sweets only occasionally in small quantities. So holiday dinners I only have small servings (or none at all) of carbs ie stuffing or potatoes. I usually skip the pie, I would rather have the yummy turkey with cranberry relish.
I hate artificial sweeteners, they have an aftertaste I can’t stand. But recently a friend turned me on to Monk fruit sweetener. No aftertaste. VERY expensive but I found it on Amazon for $8.99/1 lb. Now I sweeten my tea with no guilt!
So, welcome to our flock with diabetes. It’s a lifestyle change, but it’s doable!
Laura Martinez says
Have a Merry Holiday and thank you for everything!
Gaëlle from France says
I am sorry to bother you, but I have been away from the blog recently due to having two jobs. It is finally the holidays and I am trying to catch up. I cannot find the release date of Maggie. Is there a date, or is it still in progress ? I do not remember the title.

😉 you are the best and we love you. I’ve been allergic to cane sugar for years. Might I recommend monkfruit as a substitute in your cookies 🥳. I love agave & maple syrup as well, but those don’t help with blood sugar levels. Stevia has a solid place, but with its slight (or some friends would claim major!) aftertaste, it can sometimes get old. I’m thrilled for you that (as far as you’ve shared on the blog) you don’t have to avoid gluten, so the texture of said cookies can still be pretty normal 😉 alas, I go get my crumbly cookies ready!
Diane says
Thank you! Such a fun story-can’t wait to see where it goes!Merry Christmas!🎄🍷

See now I’ve just finished sweep of the heart..I’ve made it through the entire catalog of house andrews since Dec1…Roman serial tomorrow can not come soon enough!!! Lol but I hope everyone had a good holiday week I’ve been on geriatric puppy watch again dreading the words to say “it’s time” and take my furbaby for his last ride to the vet his sister went in Oct and he went downhill from then so he’s been my bed bound and book reading snuggle buddy for past few weeks. It’s not fair they don’t get to live as long as us. Kids are devastated so am I it’s been a gloomy week here for sure. Plus newish kitten is lethargic as of yesterday too so praying it was stress from Xmas guests only… hope new year brings light and joy to all of us. Xoxo BDH MOD R and HA.

Thank you for a new serial. Great start to what I am sure will be a fun story. I am a type 1 diabetic who uses both a Dexcom g6 and an Omnipod 5. The g6 really helped with my sugar control because it helps track your body’s reaction to various foods. With this information, you identify foods you need to limit or avoid all together. If your insurance wont pay for the g6, check out a company called Levels. Both my husband and my daughter use the g6 as they are pre-diabetic. Good luck!

Thank you for the treats! So happy that feeding the BDH is working out so well on all fronts, especially creatively, that you even have the time and energy to share Roman’s tale with us 🤗

Merry Christmas, Thank you for the story! Sympathize with losing weight, my hubby and I are both trying to lose too, trying Weight Watchers, works pretty good, slow but steady. We really ate too much of the wrong foods 🙂

I’m a new follower. Just yesterday I wrote a suggestion that I wanted a happy ending with a mate for Roman. Just read the story about Roman and the Christmas tree that his “pets?” are creating for him. Excellent. Do I understand that the next portion of the story will be next Friday?
What is BDH? Hope I got those initials right?
Ilona says
Welcome to the Horde. BDH stands for Book Devouring Horde, which is what our readers choose to call themselves. HA stands for House Andrews, which a nickname for Gordon and I because it’s shorter to type.
Robert says
Yes the story continues next Friday.
Isha says
I deeply appreciate your work and I am ever so grateful for this gift.
All the best Ilona and Gordon🥂

This past year has been a lot. One family wedding not invited to, then a cousin invited us to a “long and unique ceremony” in vampire font and the flower is dripping blood and it starts off with: “T’il Dearh…” all in all it’s been my own 3 weddings and a funeral … getting to bed to settle in with your books and the blog has been a saving Grace in so many ways! Thank you 😊 enjoy a restful and happy in between time…

Thank you for the wonderful entertainment you’ve provided me this past year, and many years before that. You’re that rare author, the one who can write their grocery list and make it compelling and readable. I seriously like every single thing you’ve written. So, thank you. Happy holidays.

Looking forward to hearing more about Roman’s adventures.
Having purchased all the graphic audios to date made me need to continue on and I just finished rereading – so Roman’s tidbit is especially timely.
Speaking of which, as a Julie/Derek fan, their adventure in getting the anchor was pretty much was only 2 paragraphs in Magic Triumphs.
Not to be ungrateful (as happy for any stories at all) but – since it’s my birthday… it can’t hurt to make a wish, right? – was there ever (or could there be at some point in the future…) a little extract about their adventure in securing the anchor from Neig’s realm, even potentially as a throwback in the new series? Just throwing it out there into the universe. Nothing ventured, nothing gained as they say! 😬
Adrianne Middleton says
Thank you for all the wonderful stories that you’ve written! I would like to offer some encouragement on the blood sugar front. I found a doc about 25 years ago who told me that diabetes was reversible. I cut all the simple carbs out of my diet, including grains. And it took years, but it worked. My blood sugar is stable now, and my A1C is normal. I hope you also find such healing.
Kerry says
Happy Holidays and thank you so much for the early Christmas present!!! I absolutely love this and can’t wait for more!!
I have a friend very interested but they haven’t read anything post magic Triumphs. I’m not sure where in the KD timeline this sits. Do you know if there will eventually be spoilers to events from Magic Tides, Claims, or Blood Heir? Thank you again so much for all you do!!!

Season’s Greetings and I can’t believe it’s Christmas Eve! Thank you so much for a bit of your excellent writing to look forward to every Friday. The thing about reducing sweets is that your taste buds quickly adjust, it’s getting your brain to agree that’s difficult!

I love the complaint that you spoke about in the intro sentence “Why is it not Innkeeper?” And if it was Innkeeper then there would be a whole different set of questions and complaints. Have a fantastic holiday season, the BDH appreciates that you are stretching your creativity in a new direction. Hope you feel better in the new year and your next set of test results are less concerning.

Merry Christmas to House Andrews from the Shenandoah Valley! We have our 18 month old grandson visiting and he thoughtfully brought his parents. We’re all in bed and it’s only 9:30. That’s not how Christmas used to work when his Daddy and uncle were little boys!

I dropped sugar and high carb foods about 3 years ago (A1c 6.5 to 4.9) mostly by keeping anything I can’t eat out of the house and cutting my holiday baking to nothing (cue complaints from the spouse). Holidays are the hardest, finding something I can eat more than a single bite of at a holiday buffet can be tough. “Moderation” does not work for me. At all.
Minna says
Thank you.
Your worlds are sooo interesting and give my weird “let’s not ever stop” brain a respite. So – thanks for keep on keeping doing this.
Happy Holidays!

Happy, happy!
I don’t wish to saddle anyone with my holiday observations, so… just be happy!
I bought my husband a birthday t-shirt in January of 2021.
It reads:
:: I’ve decided I’m not old. I’m 21, plus shipping and handling ::
Well, I gotta tell ya… the shipping and handling is hell on a body.
A few years ago, he survived multiple cancer treatments and has a new, 7-year-old immune system, and, so far, is cancer-free.
I didn’t write this for sympathy. I wrote this because the man I love and admire greatly has survived yet another holiday season with me, his contradictory spouse of over 30 years.
I, however, am falling apart.
Instead of berating me about my weight, cholesterol, blood pressure and such, he turned to me just yesterday and asked, “Are you happy?”
I said, “With you, I’m always happy.”
“Then, that is enough. We’ll figure it out.” He gave me a kiss and went to work.
His point was and always has been, “Be happy.” No matter what is happening, no matter your health or situation, do your best to be a tiny bit happy.
So, I am… I am happy. Because I choose to be happy.
I’m happy with all the small things and the big things; and books, music and movies; and snowflakes and silver fir trees covered in decorations; and the unpredictable wildlife and annoying ground squirrels; and dogs and cats; and people who love me.
We’re not rich, or beautiful, or healthy… he doesn’t make me happy, other than he is happy with me.
We’re alive. Okay, barely alive.
We’ve had our good and bad years, months, days, hours… and he stuck with me. I stuck with him when he was at his worst. We strove to find the tiny bit of happy even in the worst.
So, my best holiday wish for you, ALL of YOU, is to be happy. Even for a tiny moment. A breath. A smile on a child’s face. A taste of food. A drink of water. A warm, sincere, heartfelt gift of good will.
Don’t give in to the worst. Please, find the happy and save all those happy moments in your mind, or a scrapbook, or a photo album, and remember them all the time.
Because your life doesn’t last forever.
Thank you.
Be happy.

Damn! No cookies? Mine would be wine! Sugar is very important to watch. Selfishly, all your readers want you and all your family to stay healthy. Seriously, if you never publish anything else, we would want all of you to be healthy. You have given all of us so much over the years,we can not thank you enough. Christmas can be very stressful, personally, I have been going non stop for about two weeks. What an absolute joy, and surprise when I opened an e mail and found Roman waiting for me. Thank you, thank you so much. You and your husband gave me such a beautiful gift! Gods bless, and Happy New Year! All my love Jean

I’m a bit late to this news due to life. 🙂 I’m so glad to hear that the BDH is providing more than crazy demands, nuts running every direction, and occasional opportunities for Gordon to say “Don’t make me come over there…” Thanks for all you do and all you share with us. It’s a warm, safe, happy place to hang out even if sometimes we’re a bit kooky.

For someone that is exhausted, that is some fine writing. Thank you! I hope you have a Happy New Year, and wish you all the peace, health and prosperity. All of it! 🙂 Cheers from Calgary where we are enjoying an unseasonably warm Christmas
