While House Andrews is away (hopefully somewhere gorgeous, where the only monsters are overloaded breakfast waffles), you’re left with me. Mwahahaha.

As always, the result is chaos! Fluffy, nerdy, deeply chalant chaos. Some of you are still trying to marry London though sheer force of headcanon – because would a guy with such good jawline really be capable of betrayal? And who among us hasn’t at one time suggested impromptu post-mortem thumb fingerprint extraction surgery in a toxic monster-infested cave trap? Long live Team Facts Be Damned, you’ve taught me all I know!

The comments have also been busy trying to figure out which Talent would serve us best beyond the gate.

I see you. I hear you. I have made you a thing: The Inheritance Talent Sorting Quiz.

Tried to write it as a ‘choose your own adventure’ story. That’s technically the tank-repairing grandma of LitRPG, so it should work. There are 6 possible results: assessor, tank, blade warden, scout, healer and mining foreman. Sorry chat, you can’t aim for the InBearitance. If we can’t all be Bear, no one can be Bear. It’s only fair.

Gentle note:

This is just for fun. Every Talent plays a vital part in helping humanity survive. If you think getting a particular result might ruin your afternoon, it’s perfectly fine to skip the quiz. Bear still loves you.

Mostly because Mr.Mechcat is learning to play it on the piano so I hear parts of it every day. Usually more than once. Although he tends to stop in the middle and restart, frequently. Da-dun da-dun da-dun-da-dun-da-dun da-dun-da-duuuunnn-da-da-da-dun. But it IS good sneaking music…)

        Oh, and tell Steve that we know he just wrote those words on himself w a sharpie, and no we don’t need him to dance wearing only the tutu so we can see them. For any value of ‘them’…

    • 😀 Look, *something* happened, and the character of this aggrieved, Eastern European pragmatic miner just came out of me as I was writing the answers. He thinks everyone else has the survival instinct of a biscuit, and the higher-ups will come and harangue him for ore no matter what he goes through, so he might as well make buck. Basically Makarov the murena shock-installer from Burn for Me, but give him a pick axe.

      I tried to control him, because none of that appears in the story, but he still shines through. And he is apparently your inner voice as well 😀 (jk, results don’t mean anything. THEY DON’T! FUN! It’s ALL silly!)

      • Great backstory! Now I have to go back and look again (I know I was tempted by at least one of those answers).

        Now we know for a fact, if we had somehow missed it before, that you’re a fiction writer. They have characters in their heads.

    That was fun but oddly true, not physically but I know Im the emotional and mental loadstone of my family… I love Bears words :

    • It’s a myth that sailors love the sea and miners love the dark cavern. They hate and fear it, and that’s why they’re careful.

      The only exception are dwarves, who famously don’t love gold. They just say that to get it into bed. (Happy belated Terry Pratchett day!)

      • This reminds me a a passage in a non HA novel. The character states that vegetarian persons should join him in eating beef. If not for his reasons ( he hates cows having grown up ranching) then because the cows are in competition for the vegetarian’s preferred foods!

    • My ex was good looking, smart, socially adept, and almost universally considered a good guy. That smooth surface prevented most of the world, including me, from recognizing the full depth of his sleaze for decades. He was addicted to getting away with a$$holery undetected, and was extraordinarily successful at it *because of* his smooth surface and his intelligence.

      London might not have decades of a$$holery behind him, but he has at least one significant episode of it now. And before that, he was behaving in a way that potentially jeopardized Ada’s job, which she could ill afford to lose. So there’s that.

  36. I got Healer, which comes as a surprise to… well, no one who knows me even slightly, lol. I’m the perpetual Healer and Support in any RPG game I play, and that’s just the way I like it.

      I was in a game a while back where you randomly rolled up your character, and I ended up being a damage dealer – and it felt weird AF 😂

    However, Ada should find a rope because a standard cave system is rarely over the same level. There are vertical chimney, crevices. The poor Bear would have difficulties climbing that. Water erosion obeys gravity and rock solubility.

  107. Heads up, Mod! This nifty little thing landed in my email as 3000 lines of HTML code. It wasn’t even clear where the link was. I blindly hit a picture and it took me here. (Part of the problem is I’m 64 and reading anything on my phone is a challenge, so people with better vision probably were fine.)

    Of course, I’m not sure how you could avoid that problem — maybe just link to the quiz? I dunno. But I also want to say you do a terrific job herding the BDH, which is like herding carnivores gray aliens…

    I’m completely unsurprised to find after 27 years of military service I sort as a Blade Warden.

    It is also part of my Job doing maps of the Environment (soil, water, plants).

    Just this morning, I was thinking about how Assesors got screwed in this world. They are ‘so valuable’ they can only work for the government; but as government workers they don’t get a share of the bonuses from the profit off the stuff that _they_ find. And to add insult to injury, they are apparently not paid very well if they can’t afford a house and decent schooling for their kids.

    So when the quiz popped up I thought ‘…..well, I know I don’t want to be an assesor’

    Of course, I’m an assesor! Can’t say Im too surprised though!

  129. I got scout! Which makes total sense since I… stay home almost all the time and am super slow and deliberate when engaging in physical activity… pretty risk averse, if I’m honest… But deep inside, I must be intrepid!

    • Either that or else, being slow and deliberate and risk averse, you maintain good awareness of your surroundings at all times. Probably an excellent quality for a Scout.
