I Will Explain Everything

Blog, Innkeeper Chronicles, Snippet POST A COMMENT January 17, 2024 by Moderator R

Hi everyone, Mod R here.

I have a Klaus snippet for you today, the long-awaited reveal of what he needed to tell Maud when he came to her at end of Sweep of the Blade.

It’s also an incentive for us. Remember that bit about the Barsas in Sweep of the Heart?

“The Barsas stopped in front of us. Their leader, an old white-haired male, stepped forward and raised his arms.
Here we go.
“Barsa! Barsa, barsa, barsa. Barsa.” Each word was accompanied by arm-waving and finger-pointing.
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Sean said. “Is that all they say?” “Yep. Hush, I’m trying to concentrate.”
“Barsa. Barsa, barsa.”
The leader nodded sagely.”

Andrews, Ilona. Sweep of the Heart, The Innkeeper Chronicles 5. NYLA 2022. Kindle edition, page 401

There’s a certain Barsa-esque (Barsumial?) tendency sometimes with the Book Devouring Horde, where we can get a bit fixated on “when’s the next book, next book, next book, next book”. Klaus is here to placate us away from that, as only an Arbitrator can.

Let’s be fluffy, not Barsumials!

We’ve had an Innkeeper book just a year ago. The next one is not yet on the schedule, so there are no official dates or updates, but there will be a continuation to the series, we will find out what happened to their parents, see Helen, witness Ripper Cushions—the whole Orro banquet.

House Andrews are hard at work on projects; we’re currently getting Roman chapters every Friday; the Sweep of the Heart release from Graphic Audio is coming to us this week and I’ll have an exclusive sample just for the Horde tomorrow. We are beloved. We just have to be a bit p*tient and chill our bosoms.

“I will explain everything,” Klaus said.  “But right now we have more pressing matters to discuss.”

Oh no, you don’t. “What could be more pressing than you becoming an Arbitrator?” Maud crossed her arms on her chest. “Have you told Dina? She thinks you might be dead.”

“I have perfectly valid reasons for how I’ve handled things.”

“Valid?”

Arland gently touched her shoulder. “Perhaps we can hear the reason behind this unexpected visit?”

Argh. She waved her hand. “Go ahead.”

Klaus leaned against the table, half-perching on it. The memory punched Maud, knocking her mentally off balance. He used to sit just like this, when they were both teenagers, in their parents’ inn. It was at once nostalgic because here he was, alive and well; sad because Mom and dad were still missing; and infuriating because right now, on Earth, Dina was worried sick about him.

“Thank you,” Arland said.

“Have you set a date?”

“Three months from now,” she told him. “It will be a small, family affair.”

“I suggest you postpone it,” Klaus said.

“Why?  For how long?” she asked.

“A few years?” Klaus said. “A decade would be best.”

“And why would we do that?”

“You’ve made enemies,” he said.

“Be more specific,” she snapped.

“Do you remember a monster, a long time ago, at the inn? He chased you when you were a toddler?”

“Mukama.” Arland bared his fangs.

“You told him? Good. This will make things simpler. I can’t explain the details right now, but things are connected. You, Dina, the corrupted ad-hal, and the mukama. All of it is part of one complicated whole. Should you have your wedding now, it will be invaded. There are forces out there that wish to prevent your union. The safest, most prudent thing, is to wait until all of the preparations are complete. If you give me a decade…”

“Let me understand this,” Arland said, his face dark. “You are saying that if we were to have our wedding, the remnants of the mukama may invade the planet to stop it?”

“In essence, yes,” Klaus said.

A predatory light sparked in Arland’s eyes.

“Are you thinking what I’m thinking?” she asked.

Arland nodded. “We do have to postpone.”

“I’m glad you see the wisdom—” Klaus started.

“We need to go bigger,” she said.

“Oh yes.” Arland grinned, displaying his fangs. “Much bigger. We’ll need to invite everyone. We should be ready in 10 months or so.”

Klaus stared at them.

“We should tell your mother about the invasion,” Maud said. “Lady Ilemina would love this.”

“Oh, she will be overjoyed.” Arland clapped his massive hand on Klaus’ shoulder. “Thank you for this delightful news, my future in-law. You bring the best tidings. We shall have the grandest wedding in Krahr’s history. We will invite everyone.”

Maud grinned and swiped a quick kiss on Arland’s lips. “I can’t wait.”

Hehe, Arland has come a long way from “When I get married, I fully intend to pass all preparations on to someone else.“ I think we just discovered how to get vampire men interested in wedding preparations: promise them a monster invasion!

Love this snippet! I was hoping we’d get another Maud book soon, so this hit the spot.

        and…”several releases”…care to expound on that? 😂

We the Book Devouring Horde are greedy. I mean at the top of my “Don’t Care How, I Want It Now” list is Tower Tuesdays, are you holding onto any of those snippets, dear Mod R?

Same for me to be honest, and it’s the morning here so not really tired.

It’s a thing, a whole true thing… in my head at least. IA gave us an inch and I took a whole serial. 😂😂

            First lines of Purpose:
“It was Tuesday. Tuesdays were tower days.”

            I need answers –
What else is in the towers?
Did the next Fae expert arrive, were they run off?
Did they figure out what the Hrrrt is for?
            How is Narra?

            😂🤣😂

So, Tower Tuesdays, will we revisit?

I don’t think so. From the lack of communication from Klaus, I’m guessing he wants to do everything himself.

This has to be reverse psychology, right? Klaus isn’t that dense? He had to know this would be the Vampire reaction; go big, and the bad guys go home in an urn.

        • Jessica says

          January 21, 2024 at 11:29 am

And there’s about to be a Gertrude Hunt connection to House Krahr’s planet too hehehehe. Poor Klaus has zero idea what’s about to hit the fan. This was so much fun! Many many thanks! It did a great job of breaking up the wait for Friday!

School has been closed due to inclement weather for a few days in the past couple of weeks and I watch my grandbaby while my kid is a work, putting grandchild on school bus in the afternoon. Full days of grandbaby are both entertaining and exhausting. But there is only 1 grandbaby. I remember the days of 2 toddlers, decades ago.

But still, this is a great snippet and I love it! How to get the menfolk involved in wedding planning… offer an invasion. Awesome! And Dina can see Klaus at the wedding because thanks to George she knows Arbiters are forbidden to return to their home planet for a long time.

And while many Arbiters are likely sneaky… I don’t think most of them approach the sneaky plotting of George.

You definitely D. Not. Want. to wait on snow shoveling. You shovel as often as you can, because the longer you wait, the heavier it gets. Waiting to do it all at once is how people get injured and/or have heart attacks. Although if it snows enough, injuries and/or heart attacks can happen anytime.

          • Darlene says

            January 17, 2024 at 12:50 pm

My apologies Jewelwing, I was commenting in jest, not suggesting to not shovel to induce life threatening situations.

Here in central IL we only currently have maybe an inch or two of snow – in the grass/driveways.

Again, my apologies for any interpretation of someone not taking care and following best practices.

I grew up here in the 70’s & 80’s and fully aware of health hazards of winter.

Thank-You jewelwing and Darlene for your concern! I only shoveled the light powdery snow on my deck. I am leaving the rest for next Tuesday when WMBD said it will rain and be 40 degrees. We got 3.5 inches last week and my family worked on clearing what we had to together. I’m hoping for the light fluffy stuff and not the wet heavy snow we had last week. Again, thanks for caring!

    • Wendy says

      January 17, 2024 at 11:06 am

another person commented the same thing. y’all are probably right. he keeps close tabs on it all, including the Mukama who are enemies of his family, as well as the Vampires, since Maud is with him. he sent George to Kahari. probably also sent George to Dina in the 2nd book. and would guess that he had George debrief him on Arland and Sean, as they both had interests in Dina, as well as their families, Wilmos, oh and probably has been tracking Sebastian North, as he attacked his family and killed his best friend. I wonder if Klaus sent the Hiro George’s way, so his family would get the answer they were seeking about their parents. he plays the long game, as we can see above and because he’s an arbitrator. I could see him manipulating George to help find his parents and protect his sisters and their families. I hope the final battle with Sebastian North involves him. also, if they invite everyone, I wonder if they will invite the Horde. so many possibilities

Could Klaus be a bigger chessboard player than George? Would be amazing to see.

Maud and Dina with their significant others have now:

          1. Brokered peace on Nexus
          2. Stopped an inner house War for House Krahr
          3. Ended Piracy in those 2 houses’ system
          4. Stopped a religous War on the Hiro and defeated the Draziri
          5. Killed corrupted Ad-hals
          6. Successfully hosted a Drifen and massacred the support troops of her enemy
          7. Got the help of the First Scholar to defeat a young Sphinx
          8. Hosted the Engagement Ceremony of the Century for one of the biggest empires in the Galaxy with minimum loss
          9. Have made allies out of many powerful groups – the Merchants, The Tahari, Vampires, Horde, Arbitrators, Werewolves, The Seers, The Hiro, the Space chickens, The Seven Star Dominion, and so on
          10. Defeated the predecessor to the Mukama and stopped a Mukama at an inn getting them banned from Earth
          11. Got the Vampires agreeing to cooperation with Aliens.

I could see why they would be considered dangerous at this point. Excited for what comes next. Though i can’t wait for Maggie (hope the publising for that book doesn’t take too long but with proper marketing lead times and paper publishing i am sure it will take longer than anticipated).

      • Kris says

        January 17, 2024 at 12:01 pm

I agree, Klaus can’t reach out to Dina so using George as his intermediary makes sense, I suspected that he’s had a hand in most of this since we saw Klaus recruiting him in the second book. My first thought once Klaus gave his name in that interaction was he’s recruiting George specifically to to surreptitiously communicate with Dina without breaking the rules. Nothing in any of these books suggest that the Innkeepers Assembly have much to do with the Office of Arbitration, so Klaus is the only connecting factor.

    • Sjik says

      January 17, 2024 at 1:02 pm

I don’t know, a lot of comments here suggest the long con manipulation of George and now Arland & Maud. But I feel there is something to be said about it not being that conniving an instance – with siblings you kind of forget to be manipulative in the heat of the situation and just try to boss them around as though they’re still 5 and you’re the older more responsible one? I feel like that’s what Klaus did when he found out about the marriage – rush to tell Maud she’s being an idiot forgetting all his Arbitration training and then being hit with the “let’s make it bigger” hear attack. It’s just, as an older sibling myself, I can see me doing that.

        Yes!! Exactly my take!
I think that George is the greatest manipulator but he’s always been like this.

Klaus is a Arbitrator, and the son of Innkeepers, he HAS to have known what a vampire Marshall’s reaction would be. He jolly well ought to have known what his sister’s reaction would be too. I think he is setting up a solution.

Yes, Lady Ilemina will have lot of candid video clips of viscious fight scenes to use for future announcements about Maud and Arland, maybe ones she can add to the future theoritical baby shower. Since she used clips from the fight on the battle station to put into the wedding invitation/announcement. This will be perfect.

I have to wonder if Klaude knew this might happen and was hoping for this result or has been so far removed from Vampire mindset that it did not occur to him that they would enjoy the possibility of fighting their old enemy for one last final battle, and have a wedding where there will hopefully not be any blood on the cake.

I’ve never been disappointed when I’ve read a new release (or reread them dozens of times later) by House Andrews. Delighted, surprised, and then (im)patiently w**ting for follow on releases are my usual response, as they expand my knowledge of their creations. Even when it’s not the release I thought I wanted, it’s far too wonderful for a negative reaction. So maybe it’s not Schrödinger’s kitties after all?

Mod R I am a little confused on the time line. I will reread and it might solve it or at least that is an excuse to reread the entire series….again. So this scene takes place right after the fight at battle station when Maude and Arland are in med ward recovering and Lady Ilemina throws out that parting comment about Klaus during X month. How long is this taking place before Dina finds out from George accidently that Klaus is arbitrar? I feel like there is a difference time wise that the two stories are not happening simultaneously but I could be wrong. I think Maude’s story starts sometime around the same time that Dina is about to have Treaty Day since she remarks about how she misses them and alludes to Maude and Helen leaving not that long ago.
In the whole scheme of things does not matter but I was trying to line things up chronologically and was curious. So excited and appreciative of the snippet

    • Moderator R says

      January 17, 2024 at 10:43 am

You pretty much have it all straight 🙂 . Yes, Maud’s story in Sweep of the Blade happens around the same time as Treaty Stay in Sweep with Me. It’s January on Earth.
Klaus comes to visit as Maud is in the hospital, after they’ve just agreed to have a small wedding in a couple of months.

Then Sweep of the Heart picks up in summer- it’s been about half a year since Treaty Stay, Maud’s story and encounter with Klaus. Based on what we knew from Sweep of the Blade, the wedding should have happened already- yet Dina still refers to Maud and Arland as engaged and doesn’t mention it. And today we found out what delayed that 😀

      • Wendy says

        January 17, 2024 at 10:52 am

if they’re planning a full invasion of Mukama, I could see why Maud didn’t tell Dina and Sean. her and Klaus would want to protect Dina from that truth, since casualties would be high. Dina is going to be mad at both her overprotective older siblings

    Silly Klaus.

This also means that Maud and Arland will probably have at least one child together, just to wave a red flag at the reasonably conquerable evil forces of the universe with their awesomeness.

Orro and the wedding feast! He’d slay a dragon just for interfering with his plans and serve it up on a platter for just desserts.

Dina and Sean will want to be in on the fun as well. Maybe there will be more shipping? A return of the Space Chickens?

Finally, enquiring minds want to know … will the vala trees still be in bloom?

    • Wendy says

if they invite everyone, they can invite Maud’s old house, the Merchants, the Tahari, the Werewolves, some of the other Innkeepers, including the Rodriguez family . plus possibly diplomats from people like the Horde. Wonderful, wonderful surprise snippet! Thank-You so much! I suspect Klaus may not have been prepared for the reaction he got. He may have been so wrapped up in his own strategy and enthusiastic planning that he couldn’t see that anyone else would see it differently. He would not have been immersed in Vampire culture and may not have been aware of the effect mentioning a Mukama invasion would have!

I know that we the Author Overlords have so far put out the Innkeeper books as serials, but given how complicated the tying up of allllll the Loose Ends is going to have to be, I am fine with the last book being worked on and presented as fait accompli rather than serial. I’m just glad that HA has the mojo back to think about the book, even if other projects are ahead of it.

There will not be formal introductions at the wedding — it would distract from the principals — but I really hope that at some pre-wedding event, Helen is formally introduced, with her kill count.

*drops head in barsa shame* I feel SEEN.

I shall endeavor toward fluffiness! All the fluffiness! Totally fluffy chill here.

This is the BEST SNIPPET EVER. Of course Arland sees this as a gift — oh, look! we get an invasion for our wedding. Vampire Party Favors!

Looking forward to the audio snippet tomorrow, too. I went from “eh” about the Graphic Audio to wanting to grab people on the street and compel them to listen. (Don’t worry — I get that different modalities work for different folks. But that squeeing you hear in the corner is me.)

It’s kinda fun being in the anticipation stage for the next Innkeeper — especially now with the visual of Maud & Arland planning an invasion wedding with Klaus going “wait, no! wait!” (George, when he hears about this, will gently shake his head. Gaston will try to book passage and want to be part of the wedding party. I believe Ilona mentioned they — George & Co. — might not be in the next book, but I’m having fun imagining Gaston trying to get to the wedding.) I am also looking forward to the Ripper Cushions for Maud’s ex-House. Ohhhh, the deliciousness of just desserts.

    • Wendy says

      January 17, 2024 at 12:03 pm

Maud doesn’t know Gaston, but Arland does….hmmm … he is kind of a family friend. I wouldn’t expect George, Sophie, or Jack, but Gaston could rep that crew and the arbitrators

      • Tempest says

        January 17, 2024 at 12:53 pm

I assume — as a Gentleman of Adventure — that Gaston would be chomping at the bit to be involved. It’s the Wedding of the Century! With Fighting! Romance AND adventure. It’s Gaston catnip.

I can see him sliding in as a representative of the arbitrators or part of Dina’s party.

House Andrews may not even include Gaston. (He may be off being a Gentleman of Adventure elsewhere.) However, I’m having fun imagining it.

    January 17, 2024 at 11:40 am

    Thank you!

Well how is that for a boomerang effect between Arland, Maude, and Klause? Get the entire House Krahr involved! Have the whole thing filmed! They would have a lifetime’s worth of “don’t mess with House Krahr. If you do, this will happen” out takes. 😁

Doing deep breathing to calm the excitement. I have to get back to work.

    • Sjik says

      January 17, 2024 at 12:56 pm

The MEMEs! Just imagine the number of memes that can be made from that one look from Arland “Don’t mess with House Krahr” or the manic smiling “We’re being invaded!” to the Arland & Maud convo going “We have to make it bigger”. Honest to God Innkeeper NEEDS to be made into a tv series. It is begging to be. Also, now we know why the parents’ Magnolia Inn via the help of Gertrude Hunt opened onto Krahr home planet – instant access for invasion repulsion! Oh my god I’m dying of excitement at this. I am so LOVING the wait for the next Innkeeper, imagining things is going to be so fun. Loving the WAIT I tell you.
